AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME….. Recently, I was enjoying a conversation with someone from a church where I was once the pastor. The person spoke of the number of people who were no longer present in the church, because of death, moving from the community, or going to another church. Those still present were a fraction of those who had been there when I was there. Many of the person‘s personal friends, inside and outside the church, have died; and the community itself has gone through significant changes, as have most of the communities in which we live. Near the end of our conversation the person said, “All my institutions are dying.” I have reflected, a little, on the person‘s words. It is part of great pain and anguish many of us, our nation, and our world are going through in these times. It often feels like the institutions which were so foundational to our communities and lives are being greatly diminished or decimated. What we once knew is no longer. The churches, communities and institutions which were handed down to us from previous generations are going through the throes of radically forced change, from forces within and outside those institutions. It is a new world in so many ways. I have appreciated Tom Brokaw‘s defining the generation that lead us through the Great Depression, World War II, and the scientific, technological and expanded Civil Rights of the past century as ―The Greatest Generation.‖ In our context, they probably were. But, each generation must rise to the challenges and opportunities of its time, such as the generation who first dared to travel to these shores 400 years ago, or who dared to declare and fight for our nation‘s independence, or who survived the struggles of our Civil War and gradually restored unity to this nation. In regards to our church, I am mindful of those who dared to dream the vision of purchasing four acres of property on the west 3

edge of Freeport in 1957. (Please check out my sermon, “”Rivers in the Desert,” in print – get a copy from the office, or on our website, www.stjohnuccfreeport.org). Some of our current members were young adults (early 30‘s), youth, or children at the time; but the predominant leaders were our parents, grandparents or great-grandparents of the church. It is our generation‘s turn to dare to be open to the opportunities and possibilities of the future, to lead the way into the future, to leave a positive legacy for the generations to come, ―to make rivers in the desert.‖ .. It‘s our generation‘s turn!

HOMERUN DERBY CHALLENGE JULY 31st Little Cubs Field Here is how it works: We are given one hour to hit homeruns at Little Cubs Field. St. John will have several predetermined hitters participating. You, as a friend or member of St. John, will have the opportunity to pledge an amount per homerun. (ie. I pledge ten cents per homerun and our hitters hit 200 homers in the hour, I give $20 to the church) If we have 100 people give this same pledge the church makes $2,000! (Last year First Free Methodist hit 800 in an hour! The Growth Committee will be deciding at their July meeting what this pledged money will go toward. Please sign up in the Narthex to pledge our hitters or call the office and let us know of your pledge. This should be a really fun fundraiser don‘t forget to come out to the field and cheer on our hitters! The time is yet to be determined but it will be in the afternoon. 4

Kevin’s Korner… Walking the Talk Have you ever told your friends what they need to do to succeed but continue to fail at following your own advice. It‘s not easy to succeed with weight loss. Even when we know how to do it. Emotions and bad old habits get in our way. The last few months have been quite the challenge for me. I have no excuses for my lack of focus. I need to work past the emotions I‘m struggling with and I need to find that accountability I once had. My last two blog entries really speak to me but that fire inside to make changes seems to burn out by dinner time. I need your prayers. Please pray that I find the focus I once had for being healthy. Please pray that I stop allowing my physical limitations to dictate my weight loss success. This back injury is just another obstacle in my way. God will give me the strength to over come this obstacle. Pray that I continue to ―expect a miracle‖. My mind has been under attack by my old dark habits and I‘m giving in. That scares me more than I can say in words. I‘m physically weak and my spirit is broken. Some of you have noticed that I‘m not the man I was a few months back. I‘ve started to get back into my shell of shame and guilt. I‘m not going to hide these feelings I‘m struggling with because that‘s what fat Kevin (455lbs) did. I‘m not willing to put myself or my family back in that dark place. So I must be focused on walking my talk of fitness and health. I ―teach‖ classes each week and as of late Kirsten has honestly picked up my slack. I feel like a hypocrite. Pray that I find a renewed sense of urgency. I used to push myself , I want to push myself again. Not so much physically , but mentally. I need to be in this. Most days I‘d rather satiate with food. I suppose I‘ve struggle with balance my entire life. Either I do something to the extreme or not at all. In weight loss extreme is important, especially when you weigh 455lbs and you need to become healthy. It is a time game. You need to become healthy while your willing or your mind will get cloudy and you will lose focus. 6

You know what I‘m talking about. In a way weight loss can become just as addictive as eating the food. When your losing and the weight is dropping off its motivation to push yourself. Especially those of us who are extreme individuals. I had taken the physical fitness to the extreme and I relied on it to maintain my weight loss. Once that was taken away due to my back injury I started gaining weight again. I need to find balance and just pursue health as best I can. I may not be able to drop weight as I once did but perhaps God‘s letting me learn how to live in a life less extreme. Walking the Talk: Today I will begin posting my weight ,daily, on the right side of my Consumed by the Call Blog page. I‗m seeking some accountability here. I need it. Please take a look once and awhile and let me know that you‘re watching me and my progress. I‘m also going to start sending my journals to my group leader Diane. She hasn‘t seen a journal from me in some time (over a year). I‘m not making any promises other than, I haven‘t given up. People ask me all the time how I‘m doing with my weight loss. If I was being totally forthright I would have told them ―not good, I‘m gaining weight‖ but I‘ve had the same response for the last 3 plus years. I say and will continue to say, ―I‘m working on it‖. UPDATE: (from Kirsten) Kevin has been doing very well. Right after he wrote this blog entry he buckled down and lost 8+ pounds the next week and a few more the week after that and is still going. Accountability is important in all our lives. It keeps us coming back to the ―path‖ every time we stray. Find a friend, a mentor, a loved one that you can be accountable to, and then work on whatever is keeping your spiritual journey from progressing. Whatever that might be ...health, money, relationships, time management, etc. we all have things we need to work on in this life so that we can be the person God wants us to be. Consumed by the Call, Kevin Eckert (and Kirsten too) Director of Children & Youth Ministries Director of Technology 7

L AYC ARE M INISTRY “Well done, my good and faithful servant” Luke 19:17 1997 was when the Laycare Ministry was developed here at St. John. The course was led by Don Swanson at FHN Memorial Hospital. We were each assigned a member or two, of our church, to call on and see that their needs were met. As coordinator, I have been concerned that, sometimes, we aren‘t doing enough. Oh, we‘ve come a long way from when we started in 1997. We are doing hospital calls, home communions, home visits, sending cards, transporting people to appointments, taking in meals and just ―listening‖. I still wonder if there is more we could be doing. When our days are over, is God going to say ―Well done‖ to all of us on this ministry? This year, we decided it would be good to make a garden. A garden to offer fresh vegetables to our members. I think the idea came from Kevin when he asked that people bring fresh fruit to coffee hour as well as cookies. We want to be a healing church with healthy members, so why not fresh produce right in our own back yard! I think, for those on this ministry, and others too, we feel an ache when someone is suffering, lonely, facing surgery, or facing the death of a loved one. I think God puts that ache in us. I think it is one of the finest gifts God offers us. That‘s where our dedication and commitment come to us as laycare givers. I think I can speak for all those on this ministry when I say that we find deep happiness in what we do. So even when we feel we haven‘t done enough, we will keep working to try to do our best in the eyes of God. We work to hear ―well done‖. Peace and Love, Marilyn Ruthe, Coordinator of Laycare Ministry 8

S TEWARDSHIP M INISTRY Applying Bible Principles Here‘s a little true or false test. Be forewarned that the question is somewhat tricky. True or false: A Christian can expect to have all of his or her needs supplied by God. On the surface, that would seem to be true. After all, Philippians 4:19 says, ―And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.‖ But what many people fail to realize is that this promise is a conditional promise. The reason God will supply all of our needs is based on Philippians 4:18 where the Apostle Paul describes how his needs were met by the Christians at Philippi through the sacrificial offering which they had sent to him. In other words, although those first-century Christians gave to Paul with the desire of assisting him in his ministry to the early church, because of their giving, they earned the ―right‖ to expect that God would fully meet all of their needs. Because of their willingness to share their resources with Paul, as he indicated in Philippians 4:17, fruit would abound to their account. They could then look to God to supply all of their needs. Although they did not ―give to get,‖ they would ―get‖ because they gave. That same principle holds true today. As one person expressed it so well, ―We do not give to get, but when we give, we get.‖ That‘s what the Lord Jesus said in Luke 6:38. He indicated that by whatever measure we give, we will in turn receive. Jack Hartman, a Christian businessman, said it this way: ― . . . the more we give to God, the more this opens the channel for Him to see that we receive abundantly in return. If we withhold our giving, we are actually withholding the blessing that God wants to give us.‖ Someone described non-essentials in life as ― . . . playing Scrabble on the Hindenburg or rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.‖ Maybe that‘s a picture of how you view giving — as a 9

non-essential, something not very important in the totality of life. Could it be that is why your needs are not being met in full? Think about this: What would happen if you began to place a rightful priority on your giving, even to the point of giving sacrificially? You see, you would then have the ―right‖ to claim Philippians 4:19 with the expectation that in response to your giving, God would meet all of your needs. Your obedience to God‘s direction in your life to give would then result in having Him meet your needs, even with the same ―measure‖ that you give to Him.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL August 10th Wednesday, 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. $3.50 for piece of pie or cake, & ice cream (Beverage included) BBQ, Hot dogs, chips, and pasta salad available at an extra cost. Tickets are available in the church office, on Sunday mornings, or at the door. Watch the bulletin board to sign up to help in some way. If every able-bodied member participates by doing a little something, we won't have to call you! This is a good opportunity to get the whole church and community together for an evening of food and fellowship. Call Kim Evans 815-2755639 for more information. This is a very successful event each year thanks to all of you who help make it so.

RED CAN SUNDAY Please bring your donations of can goods, cereal, pasta, food items as well as the much needed personal items to church each month. We will also be receiving monetary donations on July 3rd for the FACC emergency fund. $417.80 was collected in June.

UNDERGARMENT DRIVE There is a great need for new underwear for underprivileged families in our community. We want to reach out to these families and let them know that St. John UCC cares for them and their children. We will be sponsoring an undergarment drive that will run during the month of July. We will be working with Amity, whom will distribute the items on a need basis. Let‘s help the children start school with new underwear this year. You can bring your packages of children‘s underwear, sizes 2 Toddler through size 16 to church and place them in the laundry baskets in the narthex. Thank you for helping the children in our community.

THE GARDEN We have a need for stakes that our pole beans can climb on. If anyone has stakes or poles or cages that we can use, please bring them over to church and put them out along the fence in the garden. We do appreciate your help and as the growing season continues, please feel free to pull a few weeds, too...Thank you..

TOUR OF LIGHT Again we would love to thank you for your willingness to help to ensure the success of the Children of Uganda Tour of Light 2012. We appreciate your patience in many time changes with the tour. Due to local music festivals and overall scheduling issues we had to delay our arrival to Freeport. The children will be arriving on Wednesday the 15th of February 2012. They will be performing at approximately 7:30 pm that evening, with the location of the performance venue, to be announced. On the 16th the children will have a free day, at YMCA pool and gym as well as other activities. (Hopefully building a small snowman, as they have never seen snow!!) There will be a potluck dinner at St. John's Church at 6:00pm that evening. They will pack the next morning and be dropped off at St. John's at 8:00am the 17th when they will leave for San Francisco. Sincerely, Martha & Perry Cowan

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS DEADLINE END OF JULY St. John UCC has money available for college scholarships through the Kampmeier Endowment Fund, memorials and gifts designated for college scholarships. Persons who are active members, as defined by the church constitution, are invited to apply for an award. While we cannot specify the exact amount of the awards until all applications are received, applicants should anticipate some assistance with books and supplies, rather than a substantial grant. Persons wishing to apply should pick up an application in the church office. Once completed, they should be returned to the church office in an envelope marked ―College Scholarship‖. You will also need to submit an acceptance letter or fall schedule from your school, plus a written paragraph or two, stating your intended course of study and what your career plans are once you have graduated from college. 12

Meeting called to order at 6:30 pm. Members present: President Perry Cowan, Bill Condie, Lisa Ebbers, Deb Hartman, Joyce Robinson, Marilyn Ruthe, Pastor Donnley, ex-officio. Opening Prayer: Pastor Donnley Minutes: Approved via email. Current Treasurer‘s Report: Pastor Donnley clarified some items in the report. He also made a list of

memorials by categories to make it clearer which are ―expendable‖ The memorials used to fund the audio/visual purchase for the Chapel Hearth room were approved by the families. Motion to approve report by Bill, 2nd by Marilyn. Motion carried. Update from Endowment Board: All Endowment funds have been transferred to Union Savings Bank (Freeport) and are now in 3 separate funds: Janshen Fund, Scholarship Fund and Endowment Fund giving some flexibility of choice to contributions made into Endowment.

Chapel Hearth: To date, $12,570 has been donated by the congregation in response to the letter regarding the need for AC and renovation. Bill made a motion to request $4,000 from Endowment Fund toward the expenses of this project; Building Fund to furnish balance and any further donations received over the total expense will be given back to the Building Fund. Lisa 2nd. Discussion and motion carried. Joyce reported on the progress of the committee planning redecoration and renovation of the Chapel Hearth Room. Joyce and Judy Garkey have met twice and are making selections for 19

recommendation of furniture, paint, pictures, etc and will be finalizing paint selections soon. The committee will present their recommendations at the July 11 Council meeting. The congregational meeting could then be scheduled for August 7 where they will present their ideas and get feedback as the cost will exceed $5,000. Council meets again on August 8. Considerations for the Future: Given the recent changes in the laws in Illinois regarding civil union, the possibility arises that Pastor Donnley could be approached to perform ceremonies at St. John. The United Church of Christ‘s position is that each church chooses what is faithful and right regardless of what another congregation may decide. The same premarital preparation would apply for these couples as is now required by Pastor Donnley. The future search process (several years in the future) was also discussed regarding decisions that will need to be made when evaluating candidates for the pastoral position. 2012 Budget Process: Timeline: June 7-13 Office notifies all ministries that their 2012 budget proposals are due to the Stewardship Ministry by August 1st Aug. 1 - Ministries present initial 2012 budgets to Stewardship Ministry Sept. 1 - Stewardship Ministry presents initial budget draft to Council Sept. 12 - Council refers budget back to Stewardship with any proposed revisions Sept. 13 - Stewardship receives budget for further review Oct. 3 - Stewardship presents revised budget to Council 20
