AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME….. In the past half-century, or so, our understanding of caring for a person’s health and well-being has moved far beyond the ―take two aspirin and call me in the morning‖ prescription. Now, hospitals and medical institutions have departments dedicated to a person’s nutritional, physical, psychological, social, spiritual well-being, and more. They care for the whole person. The needs are the same in the church, though many people, often, don’t think of the church in this way. Oh, we know that we have different ministries in our church, from Christian Education to Church Growth and Membership to Missions to Property Management to Stewardship to Worship, and more. But, sometimes, we fail to reflect on how necessary it is to have this breadth of ministries, if we’re going to be healthy spiritual people and a healthy church. As the medical community has come to realize in its context, so we need to minister to and give expression to the whole of ourselves as spiritual beings. We are complex spiritual beings who require more participation and involvement than just worshiping God, if we’re going to be healthy spiritual people. Oh, it is vitally important, and, generally, has a great impact on our emotional and physical health to regularly worship God; but it is not the only aspect of being spiritual people that is important. There is also the need for enjoyment, inspiration and community, even having fun together. There is the need for extending our compassion and love in help for others. There is the need for our personal growth and healing, within ourselves and with others. There is the need to remember and honor the significant and meaningful friendships and relationships of our lives and church community. There is also the need for celebrating the love that binds us one to another, in marriage or other ways. It is when we recognize, give voice to, and honor our diverse spiritual needs that we are healthier spiritual beings and healthier 3
in our faith. Yet, often, people nourish and attend to only one or two of these spiritual needs, as many aren’t even aware that these other needs are actually spiritual needs. The result is a faith that becomes separated from the fullness and wholeness of what could be, and a faith that becomes weaker rather than stronger; or, a faith that is called upon only in crisis, rather than being a faith that fulfills the whole of life or the whole person. In the coming six weeks there will be 4 significant events at the church that will minister to the broader, varied needs of your spiritual being: Rally Day, the Stephenson County Crop Walk, an event on ―Broken Families: Finding Peace or Making Peace,‖ and Totenfest Sunday. By participating in these varied events - from the Laura and Rick Hall Concert (sharing enjoyment, fun, fellowship & inspiration) to Rally Day and Sunday School (beginning anew, again, and educating ourselves in the matters of faith and life) to the Crop Walk (extending our compassion and love in help others) to the ―Broken Families‖ event (bringing personal grow and healing to others, ourselves and our relationships) to Totenfest (remembering and honoring the significant and meaningful friendships and relationships of our lives and church) - you will be able to tend to many of your varied spiritual needs. I also have the opportunity to share in the celebration of love through a wedding in which I will be coofficiating in an ecumenical relationship – another spiritual need of ours. I hope you will tend to your broader spiritual needs by participating in these events, so you become a little more healthy and whole in your spirituality, self and faith.

Kevin’s Korner….. Our new school year is just beginning and I have to admit, I’ve really missed seeing all the children & youth of St. John on a regular basis. I’m looking forward to creating some new ministries for the Middle school aged youth. As I write this article, I must admit that we are scheduled to have a big parent planning meeting for our ministries August 29th. As you read this that meeting will have already taken place and I’ll be busy planning new ministry programming based on their input. I’m excited to hear what parents would like St. John UCC to offer for their children & youth. I would also love to share with you that this year our Kairos Sunday School program has a few more opportunities for servants (that would be you) to teach. I’m thrilled to share with you that most of these teaching spots are already filled. There have been several years where I was not sure who was teaching from week to week. I had to hunt down a teacher or fill the spot myself. This year we have so many willing teachers for our eager students and that makes me very happy. I know our kids will thoroughly enjoy spending time with each of our servant teachers. If you would like to be a helper for one of our amazing servant teachers please add your name next to theirs on the teacher sign-up sheet in the Sunday School Hallway next to our church Library. This year we are looking forward to seeing many new faces in our children & youth ministries. We would love to get to know you and your children, grandchildren, and extended families. If your interested in talking about our children & youth ministries, I’d love to tell you about them. Stop me in the hallway Sunday after worship, drop me an E-mail: Skorkeper@gmail.com Friend me on Facebook. 6
Or Call me @ 815-218-0286 (cell) or 815-235-2824 (Office). I’d love to see how we can add you, your talents and your children to our ministries. Consumed by the call, Kevin T. Eckert Director of Children & Youth/Director of Technologies

L AYCAR E M I NIST RY The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,. goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Galatians 5:22-23 Oh My Goodness! How many times in a day do these words come to mind for us. Who do you love? What gives you joy? What gives you peace? Do we remind ourselves to be patient? Be ye kind, one to another. Goodness - do an unexpected good deed for someone each day. Be gentle to everyone - especially children and our elders. When you feel you are losing control - take a deep breath and slowly let it out. OOOH! That’s better! I’m getting a real kick out of watching the children on Sunday mornings as they go up for the Children’s Message. Oh, how I love the ones who respond and want to take part. Some have so much to say and you just know they understand what the message is all about. They show love and joy. You know that they must have these big conversations at home with their families. Their thoughts are open and honest and that alone should put a smile on our faces. We have had our share of funerals in our church family. There is where acts of kindness, goodness and gentleness shows up. Most people have lost a loved one and the grief is , some days, unbearable. Our simple acts of kindness, goodness and understanding is the lesson Jesus has taught us all. We don’t always have the right words to console a friend, but just being there is often all that matters. Self-Control - Webster’s Dictionary says it is restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires. Emotions is the one I have a problem with. You see, my tears come easy. I always feel better after a good cry, but I get a little angry with myself over the things that brings me to tears. Pastor’s sermon, a few weeks ago, spoke to us about being strong willed. Oh, was 9
that one for me! Being strong willed is a problem for me. That’s when I shed the tears - I know I can do it, but why doesn’t this work! I remember my Mom telling me ―Marilyn, that just won’t work.‖ Now, you see, I have to prove to her that I can make it work. I do have to admit that as I have done some aging, I finally realize that I can’t make everything work the way I envision it. Self-Control doesn’t have to be a negative thing. No, I don’t think I am stubborn, just determined - and - I pray a lot more, now that I have done some aging. Let’s all continue practicing the fruits of the spirit…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Peace and Love, Marilyn Ruthe, Coordinator- Laycare Ministry

S T EWARDSHIP M I NIST RY Applying Bible Principles How rich are you? Most of us would respond to that question with a recitation of our material possessions. We would list bank accounts and their contents, stocks, bonds, houses, vehicles, and other socalled assets as tangible evidence of our wealth. But is that how rich we are? Not really. Adrian Rogers said this, "If you want to know how rich you are, add up everything you have that money can't buy and what you've sent on to heaven. That's how rich you really are." There are two ways to send money on to heaven, or as the Bible phrases it, to "lay up treasures in heaven." One is to give to the work of the Lord. As we do that, particularly through giving our tithes and offerings here at St. John United Church of Christ, we make deposits in what one writer described as the "Bank of Heaven." Another way to accomplish that goal is to give to meet the needs of other people. That's the admonition provided by the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 when he instructed Timothy, "As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God. . . .They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share." Compared to many people in the world, all of us ‚ to one degree or another ‚ have been richly blessed by God. That's why we need to apply Paul's counsel to our lives. As we follow his instruction, giving in the name of the Lord Jesus to meet the needs of others, we "lay up treasures" for the coming age. One of the primary reasons God provides material blessings to us His children is that we might through those material provisions minister in His name to other people. According to Matthew 25:40, when we do that, even to what Jesus described as the "least" of His brethren, it is as though we have done it unto Him. 11
As one writer expressed it so well, "Investing in the lives of others and growing in our relationship with God are spiritual treasures. They are not subject to destruction or thievery. They are fully protected. Their value never diminishes." Or as an anonymous poet wrote, "Shall the great Judge say, when my task is through, that my soul had gathered some riches, too? Or shall at the last it be mine to find that all I had worked for was left behind?" As you consider your true wealth and what really counts for eternity, think about this: How much better to be a poor person who is spiritually rich than a rich person who is spiritually poor. How rich are you?

The focus of this event will be understanding emotional cut-off, or emotional separation, in relationships. What is it? What are its consequences? How do we see and change our part in it? How might we dwell more on God and less on people? Bob Williamson, the presenter, is a member of the faculty of the Center for Family Consultation (CFC), a Chicago-area group who’s purpose is contributing to the learning, teaching, and research of the natural systems theory of the family. Bob was associate director of the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center (LMPC) from 1992 until 2007, and continues to serve LMPC.
