PERSONAL WORK

The Thorn Crown Chapel places as its centerpiece the natural world around it. Using visual representation I wanted to create a new lens through which to view this majestic structure.

10-13: ................ Compositional Studies A select few of my 3D sketches and matte paintings.

14-19: ......................... Highlands Bridge A series inspired by a solar panel array designed to convey mankind’s hopeful yet dichotomous relationship with nature.

Richard Schmid once said that “painters don’t see more information than other people do; they actually see less”. Simplification is always what I aim for in an image. The reason we simplify is to allow the mood to come through an image. The mood is where art lives.

Good shapes = good images. All of us fight a natural tendency to overcomplicate things. We are taught at an early age that things start off simple, then gradually get more and more complicated. The heart of my motivation for making art is a longing to regain a sense of childlike wonder.

In architecture school I was always more fascinated with the potential imagery I could create than with the designs themselves. My work has always been made with a photographer’s eye. The ability to capture beauty takes a lifetime to cultivate and I’m in it for the long haul.

ACADEMIC WORK

14-17: ....... Fort Fisher Visitor Center Fort Fisher Visitor Center aims to define historical land on the Carolina coast and render eloquent the story it has to tell.

18-19: .......... Raleigh Central Library The main goal of RCL is to harmoniously provide ambient lighting, enabling the building to serve as a place for study and reading.

20-21: ................ Animal Architecture

2012 - 2020

Vernacular architecture is authentic – it is part of the land, a derivative of the culture of the place; this animal husbandry shed embraces that premise and uses moveable elements to marry form and function.

As an architect, renderings aren’t just made for marketing. They are tools for design. They inform decisions throughout every step of the design process. I’ve selected a handful of images and videos made for design meetings with coworkers and clients. They are primarily made with real-time rendering software and are often viewed in virtual reality. I’m endlessly searching for new and innovative ways to design and communicate visually. 2012 - 2020 29

Hi, I’m Skylar. Selected Works

I’m a Canadian-American architectural designer currently working in Durham, NC USA. I have 3 years of experience as an architect and a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree from North Carolina State University. My present role is Project Manager for Duda | Paine’s upcoming book, for which I am managing the creation of over 80 renderings. My current quarantine hobbies are cycling and watercolor painting. I love being in nature and feel a deep need to capture it’s beauty. skylartkitchen@gmail.com +1 919.744.0664
