Architecture never happens in an isolated environment. It context, culture, and environment are all settings which

influence the design of place. The agrarian structure is authentic – it is part of the land, in harmony with environment, and is a derivative of the culture of the place. The objective of the project was to create a new swine facility and education facility on the NC State veterinary college campus. The main concerns for the project are bio-security of the animals, student education, and the day-to-day activities of the swine care-takers. For the safety of the animals, the program is separated in to four elements: gestation, farrowing, finishing, and the classroom space. The buildings are 45’ apart so that airborne diseases do not transfer between them.

This particular structure is responding to the program of the addition.
The program requires a dynamic space for new
fitness activities. The design gives exactly that.
Veterinary College As the visitors move through the space, they recognize the activities and dynamism embellished in the architecture. Every architectural move is given cause to an event that occurs in the structure. The rowing pool, the rock wall, the arbor. Every space gives cause to the shape of the massing. Each event generates the structure of the building.

of our choosing. We chose the corner of W. Davie Street and
NC
McDowell Street because of the challenges it proposed. The site has a 15’ grade change from one side to the other. We tackled this project first by addressing the complicated program. Much of the spaces in a broadcasting station have specific technical requirements and must be addressed as a priority.
Our assessment essentially divided the building
into two elements: the office spaces and the studio spaces. The studio spaces require very controlled lighting and sound proofing as well as height requirements. We determined the most important realty on the site is at the street corner, where we put the main entry to the building. We elevated the corner lobby to contrast the slope of the site and define it as entry to our building.

broadcasting redesign After the final critique, I felt that our project deserved another scheme. The discoveries made during the initial project served as guides for the redesign. The studio spaces are much more prominent than initially thought. Instead of hiding the studio spaces behind the office, like in the first scheme, I embraced their unique character and placed it on the street corner. The sense of entrance comes from the carved opening underneath.

passive heating and cooling. The program for the facility requires 100 private bicycle parking spaces and 25 rental spaces with a bicycle kiosk. Also, a bike repair and information shop and some general seating. The site has a grade change of 10 feet from the bus station and the courtyard to the north. I separated the commuter bicycles to the recessed space, more hidden from passersby which allows the rental bikes to be advertised closer to the bus station. Perhaps the pedestrians waiting for their bus may consider a different method of transportation. An aluminum and fabric canopy covers the two areas. The canopy swoops down to the appropriate height to cover the commuter bikes to the north.

The Design Development and construction process each took approximately five weeks, with some overlap in the middle. The Construction Document set was submitted to the NC State Construction office in June. Construction was complete by July 31, the day of the final review for the studio.

To understand how to work with topography, we were asked to translate a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional form. The topography was then used at the landform for our design project. The landform has compositional qualities that were studied: figure/ground, organization of elements, geometry, etc. The compositional qualities of the landform were used as a framework to decide on the design strategies for our design. To transform the paintings into a landform, we used a series of methods to identify and create depth. We used a gray scale finder to identify different values and assign an elevation to each. We then carved blue foam block to conform to the topography suggested. Textures were interpreted as areas of vegetation. We sliced the model every 1 to create a series of section cutes which were traced and transferred into an intersecting grid to eventually create a topographic map of the painting.

The purpose of this project was to create a space for one specific activity. I chose to create the space around the act of meditation. For many religions, the act of spiritual contemplation involves many rituals. It seems fitting to create an environment specifically for these rituals. As is much religious architecture, the space is geometrically driven. The elements of the space are mainly symmetrical and easily understood. The program is divided into several different sequences: The first area is the bath for cleansing; next the shrine to pay respects to their deity; finally the terminus is the meditation space, which overlooks the serene forest.

Blockfest is an annual competition paid for by several masonry companies in Raleigh, NC. We had several weeks to design an 8’ by 8’ seating area using only 4 kinds of masonry bricks. We then had two hours to complete the project, including tamping the earth to make it stable. Our team of four were able to win the competition for our design as well as our construction. We won $250. The design is simply an elbow to an extension of masonry benches. We designed the seating according the most optimal ergonomic proportions.
