How can parametric design respond in a novel way to the specific characteristics of concrete to produce form?
DATE: ...................................................2018 LOCATION: ............................Raleigh, NC
Digital - Material Translations is a seminar which combines architectural material research with advanced digital design software. Our goal was to examine a specified material (concrete), and use parametric-based software to produce and represent form.
3
2012 - 2018
After extensive research of material characteristics and methods of fabrication, our group of 5 designed a bus shelter through the methods of parametric design, which allows for multiple iterations to be quickly produced. 3D-printed models of the iterations are then made to decide a final form. Once finalized, formwork made from fabric is generated from computer simulations and concrete is poured. Full-scale mock-ups were produced of important connections in the bus shelter.

Roof Structure & Load Nodes: Load nodes placed where you want columns to connect to roof. Roof form generated from node placement. Roof size adjustable with scale factor slider.
Support Nodes: Place whereever you want the structure to touch the ground.
Void Area: Area where grasshopper won’t generate polysurface. Useful for creating a bench/seating surface between columns.

Skylar Kitchen Creates polysurface between load and support nodes inside defined area and excludes void area.
Simulates stretched fabric from generated form. Different variables control fabric qualities, i.e. stiffness.

MIGRATION AND POLITICS THE SHIFTING DYNAMICS OF THE TRIANGLE’S POLITICAL BATTLEGROUND In these series of maps, I am aiming to uncover if migration affects the political make-up of Wake County. If so, in what ways does migration affect politics, is there anything we can learn from the past, and what can learn infer about the future? Wake County leads the state in net migration. In 2016, migration accounted for about 68% of population growth in Wake County. On average, Wake Skylar Kitchen
County gains an average of 47 new residents each day due to net migration. How does this rapid influx of people change the make-up of Wake County? The maps begin to with a plotting of migrant voters which gives an overall understanding of the magnitude of migrants in Raleigh, and who they vote for. The next map overlays migration density in Raleigh with voting trends. One can see a correlation between increased migration and increased democratic votes. This is contrasted in the next map with how migrants vote specifically versus the overall population. The last map observes how the population of the triangle is projected to shift in the future. 8

DIY CARTOGRAPHY How can synthesizing data reveal a hidden story? Selected Works

2012 - 2018
DIY Cartography is a graduate-level seminar on critical mapping and urban development. From the syllabus: The seminar uses techniques of mapping-analyzing and making meaning of raw data as a comparative analytic toll and as a way to uncover hidden meanings between data and reality. The maps analyze, synthesize and visualize Raleigh’s history, engage in field research as comparative analysis, and investigate and reflect on the effect of the mapping process on how data is understood. Through intense observation with census data, the physical environment and the official and unofficial archival history of Raleigh, we engaged in a rich and triangulated approach to historical and social research.

SHIFTING POPULATION IN NORTH CAROLINA THE FUTURE HUE OF A DEEP PURPLE STATE The percentage of North Carolina’s population born outside of the state continues to rise rapidly. Currently, 49% of the state’s adult population is born outside of North Carolina. Of the state’s 100 counties, 18 of them have non-native populations greater than 50%. Meanwhile, 23 counties have a non-native population of less than 25%.What we see in the state is that suburban areas are experiencing surges in population growth while rural areas are stagnating.
Skylar Kitchen
Who is migrating to the suburbs surrounding the state’s large metropolitan areas have a significant effect on the future of politics in North Carolina. North Carolina is a deeply purple state. Voters are currently almost evenly split between Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliateds. The social and political divide between the states urban and rural areas has created schisms in it’s politics. H.B. 2 can be seen as a manifestation of the existential struggle between the white-collar finance and technology workers migrating to the state and the rural communities. The series of charts show populations of migrants who are moving to North Carolina. The chart describe which state these people are coming from, and what the political leanings are of those states. From the charts, we can take away that there are more people who lean democratic then republican who are moving to North Carolina. Another interesting thing to note is the large amount of the population who are unaffiliated with either party.

NORTH CAROLINA LEGISLATION A DIGNITY OF COMMON MAN To get a sense of the experience how our state government has influenced Raleigh’s urban fabric, I visited the NC Legislative building and documented the spatial and phenomenological experience of the site. The master plan of the site is pedestrian friendly and rather rigid. There pedestrian axis from the State Capital Building heading North to the Archdale Building two blocks North. The NC Legislative building lies in the center of this axis, dividing it in half. The North half is a large field, nestled between two tall government buildings. The Southern pathway lies between the NC Museum of History and the NC Museum of Natural Science. This side had a much larger gathering of pedestrians.
a combination of modern and minimalist. The design is a change of pace from Stone’s earlier works, which were a direct representation of the international style. The patterned ornamentation, low profile, and wide sweeping roofs are all characteristically inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a direct offshoot from Stone’s previous design, they new US Embassy in New Delhi. Frank Lloyd Wright was quoted as saying the US Embassy in New Delhi was the “only embassy that does credit to the United States”.
