01 FORT FISHER Selected Works

Can a historic fort you can barely see have a strong presence in your mind?

PROGRAM: ........................Visitor Center ACADEMIC: ....................................NCSU DATE: ...................................................2018 LOCATION: ......................Fort Fisher, NC

Paul Rudolph states that the environment of the building, its relationship to context, and the site should determine its architectural form. A truly successful building must be related to its neighbors. Most importantly, it must define and render eloquent its role in the whole scheme. The site proposed aims to define Fort Fisher and render eloquent the story that it has to tell.

SITE ANALYSIS The site derives it’s location from several contextual elements associated with Fort Fisher’s historic site. First, the historic WWII runway forms an axis across Fort Fisher, which should be taken into consideration. Placing the proposed site at the end of the runway makes it, and the historic Fort which it cuts through, comprehensible to the visitor. Second, the proposed site is currently underutilized. It is essentially an open field with no connection to it’s historical context. Third, it’s proximity to the natural beauty of the maritime forest should have a connection with the Visitor Center.

7

2012 - 2018

The site is situated just North of Fort Fisher. Being in close proximity to the Fort, as well as a popular vacation spot for beach-goers the new Fort Fisher Visitor Center will be an important cultural resource. The site is unique, in that it is dynamic and constantly changing. As Paul Rudolph describes in his Six Points of architectural form, the building should respond to the site and environment. The Building should reflect the unique site conditions that have created and destroyed the historic Fort.

PROGRAM Fort Fisher is a place of great natural beauty, and the footprint of the building should be minimized, as to avoid spoiling its fragile ecosystem. The program should set to air the understanding of the historical role of Fort Fisher. Classrooms, exhibitions, and research libraries, and a special observatory aim to foster this understanding. A modest staff of archaeologists also inhabit the space, and they should be integrated into the building scheme. The archeology lab can also act as another learning tool for students and visitors to understand the historical role of Fort Fisher.

How can a library provide the most optimal daylight

PROGRAM: ..................................Library ACADEMIC: ....................................NCSU DATE: ...................................................2017 LOCATION: ...........................Raleigh,

NC

15

2012 - 2018

This Raleigh Central Library aims to symbolize an open and inviting public space for study and reading. It also aims to provide a well-lit reading experience. The main goal of the facade is to harmoniously provide sufficient ambient lighting to enable the building to serve as a place for study and reading. Light control was a large concern for the library, as reading is its primary function, and the largest facade opens south. To solve the issue of diffusing the direct sunlight, the project propose to shelter the facade with a translucent ‘veil’. The veil consists of an undulating translucent glass facade which wraps around the south, east, and west facades of the building, providing an optimal amount of daylight while avoiding direct sunlight on readers.

MATERIALITY

2012 - 2018

The minimalist form of the building stands as a lightbox that captures and filters sunlight throughout the building. The etched tempered glass glows when it is illuminated by sunlight from the exterior during the day and glows at nighttime from the interior. A virtue that etched glass has over plastic alternatives is its long lifespan as well as its ‘gravitas’. Its virtue is also its vulnerability as glass weighs much more than its plastic counterparts. Additional supports are required for a glass facade as compared to a translucent polycarbonate material. Another vulnerability of glass is that it can break and glass shards and drop onto people below.

Early Iteration Section Model The glazing system is comprised of folded glass panels. They are supported by vertical mullions, which are fixed to horizontal supports and struts which are then attached to the main structural hollow steel column. Given that annealed glass has a low-characteristic strength and is susceptible to rupture provoked by thermal shock under differential solar loads, tempered glass was the safest choice. Because the folds in the form of the glazing are generally sharp, and the faces of the glazing are generally flat, cold-bent tempered glass will fit between the vertical mullions. The curvature of the panels is gradual enough that there would not be excessive stress generated between the panels and they would stay in place. The glass panels would be cut into custom trapezoidal shapes and fit in between the mullions. The mullions and supports are a high-strength stainless steel grid, that supports the glazing panels.

How can a swine farm teach a future generation of veterinarians?

PROGRAM: .......Industrial / Educational ACADEMIC: ....................................NCSU DATE: ...................................................2016 LOCATION: ......NCSU Veterinary College

Architecture never happens in an isolated environment. It is always responding to a series of existing conditions. The context, culture, and environment are all settings which influence the design of place. Vernacular architecture is authentic – it is part of the land, in harmony with environment, and is a derivative of the culture of the place.

Site Plan

PROGRAM The objective of the project was to create a new swine facility and education facility on the NC State veterinary college campus. The main concerns for the project are bio-security of the animals, student education, and the day-to-day activities of the swine care-takers.

2012 - 2018

For the safety of the animals, the program is separated in to four elements: gestation, farrowing, finishing, and the classroom space. The buildings are 45’ apart so that airborne diseases do not transfer between them.

Does beauty and spirit have a role, as well as functionality in agrarian architecture?

PROGRAM: ....................Animal Husbandry ACADEMIC: .................NCSU Design/ Build DATE: .......................................................2015 LOCATION: ..........NCSU Veterinary College

31

2012 - 2018

As part of the ten-week summer 2015 Design/ Build Studio, architecture and landscape students worked as a team to design and then build a wild animal husbandry facility for the Zoological Teaching animal unit at the college of Veterinary Medicine. With limited time and budget, the students worked tirelessly to design and build The Design Development and construction process each took approximately five weeks, with some overlap in the middle. The Construction Document set was submitted to the NC State Construction office in June. Construction was complete by July 31, the day of the final review for the studio.

Can a state-of-the-art science building fit into the heart of a historic campus?

PROGRAM: .............Kineseology Department PROFESSIONAL: ......................Ballinger AE DATE: ................................................2016-2017 LOCATION: ................University of Michigan

While working at Baillinger AE in Philadelphia, I was part of a 5 person team tasked to renovate the 102-year-old E.H. Kraus Building, located in the Northwest corner of The Diag. The $120 million dollar project called for a deep renovation of the existing 183,000-square-foot building, plus an addition 61,000-square-foot infill addition within the interior courtyard. My primary responsibilities included working corroboratively on the drawing sets through the schematic and design documentation phases of the project. 2012 - 2018
