Air North Announces New Schedule

YVR Launches ‘Food on the Fly’

ir North, Yukon’s airline, has begun a new schedule, which includes increased frequency to Vancouver (six flights per week) and an earlier departure from Whitehorse for better onward connections.

The new schedule started on May 15, departing from Whitehorse at 8:15 a.m., every day (except Saturday), arriving at 10:30 a.m. in Vancouver. A return flight departs Vancouver at 11:30 a.m. everyday (except Saturday), arriving at 1:45 p.m. in Whitehorse.

Air North operates a Calgary/Edmonton service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, departing Whitehorse at 2:45 p.m., arriving in Calgary at 6:15 p.m., and in Edmonton at 7:45 p.m. The northbound flight will depart Calgary at 7:00 p.m. and depart Edmonton at 8:30 p.m., arriving in Whitehorse at 10:30 p.m.

he Merchants at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are increasing meal options for travellers with the introduction of a new program called ‘Food on the Fly’, which enables passengers to bring specially packaged meals purchased from a wide variety of YVR food and beverage outlets onboard their flights.

The new program provides passengers travelling on airlines that offer limited or no in-flight food service a choice of quick, freshly prepared meals from over 20 YVR

According to Debra Ryan, director of marketing, Air North, this new schedule is in response to demand from Yukoners for increased service to Vancouver, providing Yukoners with more opportunities to use the airline’s service when travelling to or beyond any of the north’s gateway cities. It also will provide visitors with more opportunities to fly with the Yukon’s airline when visiting the Yukon.

Simple Process CCRA and CIC will invite approved applicants to the enrollment centre, which is conveniently located on the International Departures level at the Vancouver International Airport. At the enrollment centre, CCRA will take a photograph of the person’s eye and iris. Everyone’s iris is like a fingerprint that is unique to each individual. CCRA’s iris-scan technology processes and encodes the iris pattern into a biometric record, that it then stores and uses for comparison any time a live iris is presented. The technology uses ordinary cameras and lights, and is safe to use.

This biometric data allows preapproved travellers to clear Customs and Immigration by simply looking into an iris-recognition kiosk that proves their identity. They can then enter Canada without further interaction with customs, unless officers randomly select them for inspection. Prescreened, frequent travellers are identified quickly, allowing enforcement activities to be targeted on high-risk and unknown travellers.

“I am confident that CANPASSAir will not only improve client service but also will enhance border security,” said Paula Bennett, immigration director at YVR. She encour-

ages airline staff and other airport workers who travel frequently, to enroll and take advantage of this streamlined approach to Primary Inspection. “Let our officers focus their attention on the passengers whom we know the least about,” continues Ms. Bennett.

Brian Flagel, customs director at the airport is pleased that the CCRA and CIC are world leaders in the use of this technology. “The iris recognition biometric technology is innovative, safe, and is considered the most accurate and fastest in the world,” said Flagel. “In just five seconds, the iris image is captured with a camera without bright lights or lasers. This biotechnology is just one more way that the federal government is finding innovative ways to keep Canada safe,” he added.

Larry Berg Wins Transportation Award arry Berg, the Airport Authority’s president and CEO, has been honoured with a National Transportation Week Award of Achievement for his contributions to the transportation industry in Canada.

In announcing the award, the NTW said Berg has “ensured that Vancouver International Airport and the Airport Authority continue the standard of excellence in the areas of safety and security, customer service and environmental matters. His leadership has ensured that YVR has attained the ranking as one of the top 10 airports in the world.”

Berg is a member of the Boards of Directors for the Airport Authority and its subsidiary, YVR Airport Services. He is also chair of the Canadian Airports Council, president of Airports Council International–Pacific, a director of Airports Council International, and past chair of the Greater Vancouver Gateway Council.

National Transportation Week was created to develop a greater public awareness of the role played by all modes of transportation (air, rail, road, water and pipelines) in the economic and social development of Canada. It also pays tribute to the one million people who work to keep Canada moving, and encourages the transportation industry to strive for even greater efficiency and a better utilization of resources, with a particular emphasis on safety, energy conservation and the environment.

During National Transportation Week, held each year during the first week of June, a select number of industry representatives receive special recognition of their outstanding contributions. These prestigious awards are recognized by the federal Minister of Transport and are presented at a national ceremony.

Health Canada Lifts SARS Travel Advisory for Singapore eath Canada has removed Singapore from the organization’s stringent SARS Travel Advisory list, revoking the prior recommendation against travel to Singapore.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) have worked exhaustively during the past several months to establish Singapore as a “safe harbour” amidst the SARS crisis, resulting in world recognition of Singapore’s leadership role in SARS prevention and control.

On May 13, Health Canada removed Singapore from the roster of countries to which the organization advises against travel, due to continued concern about the transmission of the SARS agent in nonhospital and community settings in

these locales. This follows on the heels of myriad World Health Organization (WHO) commendations, including commentary by Dr. Davi, WHO executive director of communicable disease programs, describing Singapore’s actions to contain the SAS outbreak as “exemplary.” In addition, David Heymann, WHO chief of communicable diseases, recently was quoted: “Singapore has ‘peaked’ and the

worst is over.” As reported in Singapore’s Straits Times on April 24, “WHO sees Singapore’s ‘actions as a very important demonstration of what can be done and what should be done.”’

Singapore was the first country to implement thermal screening at airports and immigration checkpoints, and applying formal home quarantine procedures for suspected SARS cases.

World’s Airline Association Declares SARS Impact Worse Than 9/11 S ARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has caused more damage to the global airline industry than the September 11 attacks and the war in Iraq combined, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the world’s airline association.

“This is a crisis of major proportions,” Thomas Andrew Drysdale,

regional director for IATA, told a meeting of Asian airport managers in the Philippines last month. The world’s airlines have lost more than $10 billion this year, he said.

Drysdale told reporters that the combined effects of the September 11 terror attacks, the war in Iraq and the foot-and-mouth disease in Britain did not cause as much damage to the

industry as SARS. “At no time in the history of aviation have we ever seen declines of the magnitude that we are now seeing in the Asian region as a result of SARS,” he said. “Virtually every airline in the world is affected.”

Drysdale warned of even bigger losses over the next few months if no measures are taken to contain the spread of SARS, which has killed more than 580 people and infected some 7,600, most of them in Asia.

Representatives from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations were joined by airport officials from China, Japan and South Korea at the two-day meeting, which centred on discussions on how to standardize anti-SARS measures at Asia’s airports in a bid to restored air travellers’ confidence and prevent the virus from spreading.

The Vancouver Canucks Support YVR Golf for Kids From Brian Burke: The Vancouver Canucks are proud to be supporters of the annual YVR Golf for Kids golf tournament and evening gala event. TransLink Makes Major Land Purchase in Vancouver Investment Guarantees Options for Future Transit System Needs ransLink has agreed to purchase 17.3 acres of the former site of the Eburne sawmill at West 75th Avenue and Hudson Street in Vancouver, near the north end of the Arthur Laing Bridge. TransLink is purchasing this industrial-use land from North Fraser Terminals Inc. Staff is seeking Board approval to investigate the possible relocation of the Oakridge Transit Centre operation to the Eburne site in south Vancouver.

With Board approval, staff would investigate this option in conjunction with preliminary design work already in progress to reconstruct the Oakridge Transit Centre on 41st Avenue. Staff would then provide the Board with a recommendation for funding to replace the existing Oakridge Transit Centre either on the

existing site or on the newly acquired Eburne site.

“It is extremely difficult to obtain a large site like this within Vancouver city limits so we are taking advantage of the opportunity,” explains TransLink chair Doug McCallum.

“We predict a need for the space to accommodate future transit operation needs, possibly including a new transit facility to replace the one currently at Oakridge,” McCallum said.

review of the past year at YVR and the many challenges facing the airport and the aviation industry were among the topics covered during the Airport Authority’s annual public meeting last month.

As a community-based organization, the Airport Authority invites the public to the meeting at YVR each year to hear presentations outlining results from the previous year and plans for the future. The meetings also include a question and answer period. It is just one of the many ways the Airport Authority is accountable to the communities it serves.

In his opening remarks to the meeting, Graham Clarke, chair of the Airport Authority’s Board of Directors, noted the tough times the aviation industry is experiencing, adding, however, that as a result of a revised 2003 business plan, “we’re in a position to weather the storm without sacrificing our commitment to customer service and our mission to serve this community.”

In his presentation, Larry Berg, president and CEO, said, “We have to remain financially viable in the bad times, while ensuring that the airport continues to be in a position to contribute to British Columbia’s economic development in the long term. This means we may reduce short-term spending while continuing to fund

programs that have a long-term impact.”

He said that as BC’s airport, the Airport Authority will continue advocating initiatives that bring economic benefits to the region, such as the proposed rapid transit line linking Richmond, the airport and Vancouver.

The Airport Authority has committed $300 million to build the airport portion of the project should it proceed.

“It would not serve this community to forego planning for the future because a series of unfortunate events have set the industry back today,” Berg said.

Last year was the Airport Authority’s 10th anniversary, and part of Berg’s presentation focused on airport development over the past decade. More than $900 million has been spent on a number of capital projects and upgrades, among them the north runway, International Terminal Building, Airport Connector, renovated Domestic Terminal, the four-level parkade, baggage systems and information technology. And all of this was achieved with out government funding or subsidies. He also noted that over the past decade, more than $800 million has been spent on operations and $536 million has been paid to the federal government in rent.

“This airport’s most important

function is to be a connector,” he concluded. “YVR connects people and goods to destinations beyond British Columbia. In its role as a connector, it generates development for and in the community. The Airport Authority will continue to work with the airport community and with all British Columbians. With your support, we will continue to deliver the services BC needs to stay connected.”

Other members of the Airport Authority’s executive team also made presentations, including Tony Gugliotta, senior vice president, finance and chief financial officer, who discussed the 2002 financial statements; Craig Richmond, vice president, operations, who gave an update on passenger statistics, and safety and security initiatives; Bob Cowan, senior vice president, engineering, who reviewed capital projects at YVR; and Anne Murray, vice president, community and environmental affairs, who reported on some of the Airport Authority’s environmental and community initiatives.
