Construction Projects require night-time use of North Runway his summer, the Airport Authority is undertaking a number of major projects on the south airfield, including an overlay and extension of the south runway, an upgrade of the lighting system, and the construction of a dedicated engine run-up pad. The majority of the work will occur between June 11 and September 3. Because the work will require night-time closures of the south runway, the north runway will be used during this 12-week period for all arrivals and departures after 7:30 p.m. until normal operations resume by 7:00 a.m.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer

Smooth Sailing For Passengers This Summer ith the busy summer travel season upon us, YVR is taking the wraps off a number of initiatives to improve passenger flow and enhance customer service. One of the first things that regular travellers through YVR are noticing is the absence of Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) kiosks. On June 1, the AIF was added to airline tickets, which is how it is collected at most airports. Including it on the ticket is something our customers have been asking us to do for years, and we are happy to finally oblige. Not only is it more convenient for people, it also means no more stopping at a kiosk or AIF collection booth and that should help relieve some of the congestion near the passenger screening checkpoints that we’ve experienced at peak travel times in the past. In partnership with the airlines, we are continuing to add common-use, self-service check-in kiosks in the terminals and other external airport locations, including our parking lots. We’re also working towards adding these kiosks in downtown hotels. By using common-use kiosks, passengers can check-in with a number of airlines at any kiosk, making the process faster and more convenient. I am proud to say that YVR was the first airport in North America to introduce these common-use kiosks, and we continue to lead the industry in expanding their usage. In this part of the world, summer also means Vancouver-Alaska cruise ship season and the majority of passengers who will take a cruise this year will travel through YVR. This season, we’ve expanded our innovative on-board check-in program to include more cruise lines and airlines. On selected cruise ships, passengers can check-in at their convenience on board their ship, and receive boarding passes and baggage tags. Once they get to YVR, they are taken to a dedicated check-in facility for cruise passengers located directly below the departure gates. Baggage is also collected on board ship and loaded directly onto air-

craft at YVR, meaning passengers don’t have to worry about baggage until they arrive at their home airport. Last year, we were the first airport in North America to offer this program, and the participating cruise lines like it so much, they want to apply it at other ports. U.S.-bound passengers will notice some other changes this year. To alleviate some of the congestion we experienced in our U.S. check-in area last summer, we’re adding more check-in counters and self-service kiosks. We have also set aside the eastern part of the terminal for cruise passengers, who will be bused to our dedicated cruise facility directly from there. This will reduce the number of people checking in at the airline counters and proceeding through passenger screening in the main terminal. Another recent service enhancement for our U.S.bound customers is the addition of new retail outlets in the post-security departures area of YVR. Customers frequently complained about the limited retail at the gates, but because of government policy our retail outlets could only sell items with a value of less than CDN$25. Thanks to a successful campaign we led to change the policy, goods with a value of up to $135 can now be sold, giving our customers more options while they await their flight. For our domestic passengers, this month marks the re-opening of our A-Pier. WestJet is moving its operations to this pier, which has been completely renovated and expanded to provide additional gate capacity. Three of the five gates are equipped with double-headed bridges, which will allow passengers to board and disembark aircraft more quickly. These are just some of the measures we are taking to provide our passengers with a satisfying and enjoyable experience at YVR. We’re excited about the summer travel season and ready to welcome passengers to one of the world’s top 10 airports.

Passengers Rate YVR among World’s Top 10 Airports or the sixth consecutive year, passengers have rated YVR one of the world’s top 10 airports in the International Air Transport Association’s annual Global Airport Monitor survey. YVR was rated the No. 3 airport in North America for overall passenger satisfaction and No. 10 in the world. It was also rated No. 3 overall in its world size category – five to 15 million passengers. The survey reflects customer satisfaction levels across a wide range of

service attributes, with results derived from 50,000 interviews at participating airports. Dubai was rated No. 1 in the world, Minneapolis was No. 1 in North America and Cape Town was No. 1 in the 5 to 15 million passengers category. YVR’s third-place ranking among North American airports, a drop from the No. 1 rating in the previous survey, reflects increased competition among airports worldwide, and highlights the importance of remaining one step ahead in customer service

innovation, said Susan Stiene, the Airport Authority’s director, service quality and retail development. “We use passenger feedback from this survey and our own surveys to help us identify areas for improvement and new ways to add value for our customers,” she said. “Our goal is to be the best airport in the world.” Earlier this year, the Airport Authority introduced a number of new service enhancements aimed at improving passenger processing, such as adding the AIF to airline tickets, expanding the on-board check-in program for cruise ship passengers, and installing additional self-service check-in kiosks. In February, the Airport Authority also unveiled a 10-year, $1.4-billion capital program to ensure YVR will remain a low-cost, high-service airport with world-class facilities designed to accommodate the 23 million passengers expected by 2013.

Major Projects, South Runway Overlay and Electrical Upgrade The 3,335-metre-long south runway (08R-26L) is the primary departure runway at YVR, and is used 24 hours a day. It was originally constructed in 1952, and the last complete pavement overlay was in 1985. This summer’s work will include milling out the top layer of asphalt and replacing it with a new layer that will be almost 200 millimetres thick. The amount of asphalt required to overlay YVR’s south runway is enough to pave Granville and Oak streets, plus the Arthur Laing Bridge. The upgrade to the runway’s electrical system will include the installation of state-of-the-art approach lighting, as well as new runway airfield lighting systems. Nearly 1,000 new or replacement inset lights will be added to the south runway system, and more than 650 kilometres of electrical cable will be installed during the project. South Runway Extension The western edge of the south runway is being extended by 150 metres on existing airport lands. When completed, the runway will be 3,485 metres long. The longer runway will accommodate existing larger, longhaul aircraft and future generation aircraft, as well as enhanced safety through increased take-off and stopping distance. The runway extension will also allow YVR to strengthen its position as a premier global gateway. Although YVR has a geographic advantage as the closest major West

Coast airport to Asia-Pacific, its competitor airports — Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle — all have longer runways. Engine Run-up Pad The engine run-up pad – for the stationary running of engines at power, anywhere from idle to full throttle, as part of engine maintenance — is being built on the western edge of Sea Island. The need for a specially designed area for engine run-ups was identified by the community-based Aeronautical Noise Management Committee, and the construction of a dedicated engine run-up pad is an integral component of the Airport Authority’s Noise Management Plan. This pad will reduce the noise impact of engine run-ups on people living near YVR, and provide a more isolated area to perform the tests. Why do the Work in the Summer? Although summer is YVR’s busiest time for travellers, it is also during these months that the weather is best suited for paving and electrical projects. The construction schedules allow work to be completed during off-peak hours, between 7:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. with minimal impact to airport operations. As with similar projects in the past at YVR, such as the Taxiway Lima Overlay Project in 1999, the work is done over short, intensive periods to reduce the impact to flight schedules and noise on the neighbouring communities.

BCIT Annual Open House arlier this month, BCIT Aerospace hosted an annual Open House, which was attended by approximately 2,000 people. There were many displays set up throughout the hangar, including hands-on demonstrations encouraging public participation. A recently donated WestJet 737 was open for view, including its cockpit and cargo holds. A flight simulator, set up in a Robinson R22 helicopter, allowed for a realistic experience operating the aircraft. The periodic arrival of the YVR Emergency Response Services Vehicles (fire trucks) throughout the day was a hit with kids and parents alike.

E Air cargo traffic has also rebounded nicely, up 10.3% versus the same quarter in 2003. This has been mostly due to the courier and all-cargo carriers (integrators) which are up 29.2%. However, the other carriers are also up 4.3%. An improving economy and a recovering hi-tech sector appear to be contributing factors. Cargo – 1st Quarter 2004 vs 2003

Travel Tips to Ensure Smooth Sailing Through Airport Security n an era of heightened security awareness, it is more important than ever to be a savvy and prepared traveller who can efficiently navigate airport security checkpoints – and get on with your trip. In this spirit of travel preparedness, Travelers Advantage® has developed a travellers’ checklist – 10 convenient tips to help you move smoothly through airport security. “We’re trying to help people ease their way through airport security by helping them understand what they can do to speed the process,” said Travelers Advantage vice president Julia Ryan. “Airport security personnel pull people aside for further screening on a random basis,” she added. “If this happens to you, don’t panic or become upset; taking you aside is just a sign that the system of random detailed screening is working. We’re all aiming for the same goal of keeping air travel safe.” The 10 Travelers Advantage tips for smooth sailing through airport security are: 1. Pack your laptop so you can easily remove it and send it through the Xray machine in its own plastic tray. Don’t forget to label your laptop computer. These are one of the most frequently forgotten items at screening

I

checkpoints. 2. Store all undeveloped film and cameras containing film in your carry-on baggage. Ask for a hand inspection if you want to ensure that your film is not damaged by the X-ray machine. 3. Avoid over-packing to prevent personal articles from spilling out of your bag if it is opened for inspection. Think carefully about the personal items you place in your carry-on baggage as screeners may have to examine its contents. Consider stowing personal belongings in clear plastic bags to reduce the chance that a screener will have to handle them. 4. If you are bringing a gift to friends or relatives, wrap it after you arrive at your destination. Otherwise, you might have to unwrap it to get through security — even if it is in checked luggage. 5. Don’t bring or pack prohibited items such as pocket knives, scissors or other sharp objects. 6. Avoid carrying bottles of liquid through the screening checkpoint. Plan to purchase any food items you may wish to carry onboard the aircraft after you have completed the screening process.

7. As you head toward the security area, take a deep breath and remain calm. Check and be sure you have your boarding pass and a governmentissued photo identification card ready for security personnel. Take your time unpacking and repacking your belongings — too many people rush through this process only to find they have left their laptop, keys, or wallet behind. 8. Place metal items in your carry-on bag. This includes, loose change, keys, watches, mobile phones, pagers, and personal data assistants (PDAs). 9. Take off your coat (outer coat and sports coat) as you approach the security screening area — you will need to place them in a plastic tray for safe passage through the X-ray equipment. Suit jackets and blazers do not have to be removed, unless requested by the screener. 10. Be prepared to remove your shoes; you’d be surprised how many shoes contain small pieces of metal. If you wear a belt with a large metal buckle, suspenders with metal clasps, or metal jewelry be aware that they could trigger the alarm and prompt a check by hand.

Vancouver Canucks Support Annual YVR Golf for Kids t started as a friendly golf challenge in the 1980s and from there, YVR Golf for Kids has grown to become a premier charity fundraiser in the region. In 1991, two members of Canada Customs, Brian and Audrey Flagel lost their daughter to cancer. In response, the airport community rallied together and changed the law enforcement tournament into a golf challenge and auction, with the proceeds to a charity in the memory of Elise Flagel. The charity of choice became Canuck Place — A Hospice for Children. Since 1991, the event has raised more than $1 million for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and other

children’s charities. Last year alone, $146,500 was donated to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. In addition to supporting the work of the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, YVR Golf for Kids is dedicated to helping a variety of children’s’ charities such as schools, girl guides and foundations throughout the Lower Mainland. The Vancouver Canucks and its former general manager, Brian Burke, have been supporters of the annual YVR Golf for Kids golf tournament and the evening gala dinner and auction. “I attend numerous golf tournaments and events in support of charities across the Lower Mainland, and YVR Golf for Kids is second to none,” said Burke. “The golf prizes are outstanding and the evening gala, with silent and live auctions, offers a terrific dinner and terrific travel and lifestyle prizes.” Driven by the support of donors, volunteers and event participants, the continued support of YVR Golf for

Vancouver “The popularity Canucks of this event continues to grow as evidenced by the fact that both the golf tournament and dinner gala are all but sold out. Those who would like to participate can mark their calendars early for next year, and there is still plenty of opportunity to become involved as a corporate or private sponsor, either through sponsorship at the golf or dinner events, or by prize donation,” said Ray Segat, co-chair of YVR Golf for Kids. New Zen-inspired Arrivals Lounge at YVR ancouver International Airport (YVR) has introduced a new payper-use lounge facility called the Plaza Premium Arrivals Lounge, which is available to all passengers — regardless of airline or class of travel — arriving on U.S. and international flights after they have cleared Canada Customs. Open to passengers June 1, 2004, the 2,575-square-foot (236.5-squaremetre), Zen-inspired lounge is located on Level 2 of the International Terminal Building and provides access to a wide range of personal and business services and facilities for passengers either on lengthy layovers or arriving on long-haul flights from locations such as Singapore (18.5 hours), Sydney (18 hours) and London (9 hours) whose hotel rooms may not yet be ready. “The introduction of this lounge is part of our ongoing efforts to provide our passengers with the very best in an airport experience,” said Christopher Gilliland, manager retail sales and service at YVR. “We’re thrilled to offer this quiet oasis full of amenities to help passengers complete some work, get refreshed, relax and unwind.” Plaza Premium Lounge, which is run by Plaza Business Centre Management Ltd., an experienced lounge operator that manages deluxe lounge facilities in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Sydney airports, offers shower facilities, private resting suites, a pressing service for flight wrinkled clothes, a self service bar and self service buffet counter, television and movie area, library, email and Internet access, and a full service business centre including secretarial services, high-speed photocopying,

I am confident that the Plaza Premium Lounge further

enhances the good image of the airport.” The Zen-design concept of the lounge’s interior – clean, sophisticated and tranquil – is complemented by First Nations art consistent with the interior design of YVR’s main terminal buildings. Space and soft, indirect lighting is used to create a sense of calm and simplicity to soothe the mind and body and alleviate weariness and stress after a long flight. “Design-wise, our goal ultimately

is to create a strong gesture of hospitality to visitors from around the world and to provide an immediate impression of our province’s heritage and culture,” said Gilliland. Cost to use the arrivals lounge facilities for five hours is $25 for adults and $15 for children age six to

Pitt Meadows Airport Opens New Terminal

Penske Truck Rental Expands Operation enske Truck Rental has opened its first consumer rental location in Richmond as part of its plan to break into the demanding Canadian consumer truck-rental market. The Richmond location will complement the company’s Annacis Island hub, Burnaby head office and Abbotsford locations. The Penske name is a leader in the U.S. market for consumer truck rentals, but is better known in the Canadian market for its commercial and fleet truck business. Kelly Ashley, who has been appointed the first branch manager in (right) Kelly Ashley, manager Penske Richmond, and colleague Adan Sprauer, announce the launch of “Rental Express,” a one-minute consumer truck rental program.

the region. The new terminal was constructed from five former portable school structures and features a restaurant, airport offices, commercial space, and passenger facilities. Three large flagpoles at the entrance were donated by the Vancouver International Airport Authority, represented at the ceremony by Craig Richmond, vice president airport operations.

Canada with consumer truck rental responsibilities, has already announced a new Penske service. “We plan on bringing a whole new level of service to the industry and are pleased to launch our newest product — Rental Express — the quickest rental in the business,” said Ashley. “Fast service is guaranteed with this one-minute rental program.” Ashley, along with his colleague, Adan Sprauer, plans on working hard to earn business from the airport community. With the newest fleet in the industry, a broad range of vehicles, competitive rates and the Penske name, Ashley is hoping that the new Richmond operation will set the pace for future branches.
