ACE Aviation Invests In Fifth Largest U.S. Airline CE Aviation Holdings Inc., the parent holding company of Air Canada, has completed its planned $87-million investment in the recently merged US Airways-America West entity in conjunction with US Airways’ successful exit from U.S. bankruptcy proceedings. Robert Milton, ACE chairman, president and CEO, will serve as a director on the Board of US Airways Group Inc., solidifying a planned partnership with the merged entity. The ACE investment represents approximately seven per cent of the new US Airways’ equity. “This is an important transaction with great strategic significance for ACE and we look forward to working with Doug Parker’s [US Airways chairman, president and CEO] management team going forward,” said Milton. “The new US Airways is now the fifth largest carrier in the U.S. and its extended network further strengthens Star Alliance’s position as the world’s leading airline alliance.” Significant progress has been

A

ancouver International Airport Authority has launched common-use self-service (CUSS) check-in kiosks at Delta Vancouver Airport in Richmond and Delta Vancouver Suites in downtown Vancouver. The kiosks allow hotel guests at both locations to check in for flights departing from YVR before leaving their hotel. CUSS kiosks, pioneered by the Airport Authority and launched at YVR in 2002, allow passengers to access multiple airlines from one machine, check in faster and avoid line-ups. The kiosks are free, easy to use and can be used by all guests. Self-service check-in kiosks also provide a cost-effective solution for airlines and airports. It takes approximately 60 seconds to check in at a kiosk, making them a quick and convenient alternative to traditional check-in processes. “The Airport Authority has been

Discussions are also continuing relating to ACTS performing an extensive range of aircraft maintenance and overhaul work on the new US Airways’ combined fleet of 361 aircraft, which includes Boeing 737, 757 and 767 aircraft as well as Airbus A319, A320 and A321 models.

“As US Airways moves forward post emergence, we expect to see an acceleration of, and increasing growth in, the work that ACTS does for the new carrier,” said William Zoeller, president and CEO of ACTS. “At this stage final contracts have not been completed, but ACTS expects the commercial relationship to be a significant and profitable segment of its business going forward.” In addition to the opportunities for MRO work for ACTS, the attractiveness of the investment for ACE has been bolstered by ground-handling, codeshare and facility agreements.

Kiosks,

Currently, guests at Delta Vancouver Airport and Delta Vancouver Suites can access WestJet flights through the CUSS kiosks, with more airlines slated to join the program later in the year. Once check-in is complete, hotel guests receive a boarding pass to take with them, along with any baggage, to YVR, where they can proceed to the gate, either directly or after dropping off their baggage with the airline.

YVR Golf For Kids: Bidding For Charity VR’s 14th Annual Golf for Kids, the Vancouver airport and Richmond community premier charity fundraiser, teed off on August 25 at The Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club, smashing another fundraising record and netting $365,000 for Lower Mainland children’s charities. Following the golf tournament, 500 guests packed the Best Western Richmond Hotel and Convention Centre to enjoy a gala dinner and bid on the $300,000 worth of donated prizes. John Shorthouse, better known as the Voice of the Canucks, emceed the evening’s events with the help of Brad Scott from Maynard’s Auctioneers, who ensured the 333 items, ranging from flights and hotel stays to restaurant vouchers and sporting gear, fetched top dollar. All of the items presented for auction were generously donated by sponsoring companies throughout the local communities. “The Airport Authority is a community-based organization, and as such, strives to champion local initiatives that benefit our area,” said Larry Berg, president and CEO,

Y

Vancouver International Airport Authority. “Although we operate globally, we know that our neighbouring communities are at the heart of our success. YVR Golf for Kids gives individuals and organizations at the airport an opportunity to make a difference.” In the mid-1980s, members of various law enforcement agencies working at YVR, including the RCMP, U.S. Immigration, Canada Customs, and U.S. Customs, began a friendly golf tournament. In 1991, after Brian and Audrey Flagel of Canada Customs lost their daughter Elise to cancer, the tournament was reinvented as YVR Golf for Kids, with proceeds donated in Elise’s memory. Since then, $1.65-million has been raised for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and other local children’s charities, including Girl Guides of Canada, Make A Wish Foundation, the RMCP’s D.A.R.E. program, and numerous other local charities. sengers and airlines,” said Kevin Molloy, vice president, Simplified Passenger Travel and chief information officer, Vancouver International Airport Authority. “As airlines and airports around the world continue to adopt this system, YVR is once again leading the way in streamlined passenger processing by working with partners like Delta Hotels to bring self-service check-in to a variety of convenient off-airport locations.”

By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer

Innovation Fuels The Future Of Passenger Processing ’ve talked in the past about how we continually look for new ways to streamline passenger processing at YVR. We’ve developed a number of leading edge programs and innovative solutions to reduce the amount of time our passengers spend waiting in line at the airport. Many of these programs have been a tremendous success. In past years, we have experienced some congestion in our U.S. check-in area, particularly on days when cruise ship passengers were passing through YVR. To address this, we worked closely with government agencies and business partners to develop on-board cruise ship check-in, and a satellite facility for faster processing through Customs. The U.S. Direct program allows passengers to be transferred directly from their ship to their gate “in-transit,” making for a quick and easy journey. The 2005 cruise ship season saw an astounding 140,000 passengers use these programs. That means 140,000 fewer people in the main terminal, making for less congestion and faster processing for all our passengers. Our common-use self-service kiosks have also been a remarkable success. These kiosks allow passengers to access multiple airlines from one machine, check in faster and avoid line-ups; a typical check-in at a kiosk takes approximately 60 seconds, making them a quick and convenient alternative to traditional checkin processes. Last month we officially launched the off-airport common-use self-service kiosk program, introducing kiosks at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel in

I

Richmond, Delta Vancouver Suites Hotel in downtown Vancouver, and at the Vancouver Tourist Info Centre. Travellers can now check in for their flights before leaving for the airport. Once check-in is complete, passengers will receive a boarding pass to take with them to YVR, along with any baggage, where they will proceed to the gate directly if they have carry-on luggage or after dropping off their baggage with the airline. In the not-too-distant future, we expect to see kiosks at numerous other downtown hotels, the Convention Centre and at a variety of convenient locations around the Lower Mainland. Looking farther out, passengers will be able to check their baggage offsite and have it meet them at the airport, or use their cell phone or PDA to check in for flights. By 2010, self-service kiosks will be a common sight, not only in Lower Mainland hotels, but also in places like Whistler and the athletes’ village, as well as future RAV Line stations. Utilizing technology like off-airport check-in brings a new level of convenience to our customers. It also helps us to effectively manage events that could result in large influxes of passengers at specific times, such as the Olympics, and other sporting and special events. We have become the industry leader in commonuse and kiosk technology because we do everything with an eye to the future. How our passengers travel today is not necessarily the way they’ll travel tomorrow. At YVR, we’re constantly looking ahead to ensure we’re finding solutions today to anticipate our customers’ needs tomorrow.

YVR Puts Green Vehicles To The Test ry before you buy” has been the mantra of the Airport Authority when it comes to hybrid and electric vehicles, and try they have. Several Airport Authority departments, including Wildlife, Operations, Maintenance and Environment, have been test driving a variety of the environmentally friendly vehicles to determine whether or not the vehicles would fit their needs. The efforts are in support of the Airport Authority’s commitment to environmental excellence. Already a leader in the business community for their environmentally friendly business practices, the Airport Authority

The week-long test drives saw the vehicles being used for the mundane—driving around Sea Island—to the adventurous—off-roading airside. Drivers were asked to keep in mind the quality of the drive as well as the vehicles’ applicability to various tasks. Although the overall response to the vehicles was good, many drivers noted that the vehicles lacked versatility and were limited to only a few

applications at YVR. Nevertheless, they were excited about trying the new technologies. The Airport Authority will continue to test hybrid and electric vehicles as the results from the resident hybrid have been encouraging. The Prius, purchased in 2001, has already prevented more than three tonnes of vehicle exhaust from being released into the air. The Airport Authority will also be testing other alternative fuel technologies, including biodiesel, natural gas and hydrogen gas next year.

CanJet: Canada’s Newest Coast-To-Coast Low-Fare Airline By Gordon Belgrave

the 15 markets in Canada and the United States to which CanJet flies. CanJet has made an excellent start in its coast-to-coast network service, with courteous and friendly flight attendants who really do believe in customer service, plenty of cabin

legroom and convenient airport gate access to connecting flights. CanJet appears to be doing things right. For more information, visit www.canjet.com, or call the airline’s Reservations Sales Centre at 1-800809-777.

CanJet 737-500 flight 198 to Toronto gets ready for departure from YVR. hen CanJet touched down at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on June 27, it became the newest low-fare carrier providing coast-to-coast Canadian airline service. A division of Halifax-based I.M.P. Group Limited, Tourist News Magazine has already named CanJet “Canada’s Best Value Airline.” Though a low-fare carrier, the airline prides itself on its reasonable prices and superior customer service. On a recent trip from Vancouver to Toronto, I found this to be true. My ticket cost $495, not including taxes and fees. CanJet’s versatile and easyto-use online booking service allowed me to generate an E-ticket and preselect an up-front seat using their Sm@rt Web Check-In. CanJet’s advanced on-line reservation system permits customers to take advantage of special on-line booking options such as wheelchair requirements and pet bookings. Flights may also be booked through a travel agent, who will provide a booking confirmation number for the flight. This, along with photo ID, is all that is presented at the airport counter. I arrived early at YVR for a noon boarding, dropped my bags at checkin and headed for a quick lunch at Milestone’s restaurant, just a few steps from security on B concourse of the Domestic Terminal Building. I opted to leave the in-flight sandwich meal for the return, early morning Toronto departure flight. CanJet serves a $5 sandwich lunch on most non-stop flights of more than twoand-a-half hours. Wine and beer are available for $5, with snacks and beverages costing $1 to $2, and coffee and tea served free of charge.

DigEplayer, the world’s first portable video-on-demand system, makes for great personal in-flight entertainment on CanJet’s long-haul flights. CanJet’s departure gate at YVR is conveniently located near the screening point, so it’s only a short walk from the restaurant and I’m ready for boarding. It’s a similar situation on the return trip from Toronto, with a Tim Hortons right in the departure lounge. On board the Boeing 737-500 aircraft—CanJet utilizes a fleet of nine—the cabin is impressive, with all-leather seats and courteous, professional flight attendants providing seat directions and assisting with luggage. Canjet is currently upgrading the seat pitch on its aircraft by an average of two inches to provide increased passenger comfort. The reconfiguration of the seating from 120 to 118 is scheduled for completion at the end of this month. The flight from Vancouver left on time and throughout the journey our friendly captain announced the route

details, including points of interest for those in the window seats. In-flight entertainment comes in the form of a digEplayer, which CanJet claims is the world’s first portable video-ondemand system. The laptop-sized player comes loaded with a choice of movies, television shows, children’s programming, music videos and games, the use of which was demonstrated to me by the 12-year-old sitting in the next seat. He was happy to pay the $10 rental fee. The system is a good one as users can control what they want to see and it is non-intrusive for those who are otherwise occupied. On arrival at Pearson International Airport four hours and seven minutes later, the flight crew announced the gate numbers for connecting passengers to St John’s, Halifax, and Moncton, New Brunswick, three of

Richmond Man Wins Dodge Viper Lease D aimlerChrysler Canada has made the dream of one local man come true with the awarding of a twoyear, payment-free lease of a 2005 Dodge Viper SRT. Earlier this year, more than 16,000 people across Canada who purchased a Maintenance Service Package from Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge dealership service bays earned the opportunity to enter a random draw in DaimlerChrysler Canada’s “Win A Dream Car Lease” promotion. The lucky winner was Richmond resident Nial Pye, who took possession of the $128,000 vehicle at a keypassing ceremony held last month at the Columbia Dodge dealership on Minoru Boulevard. Pye, who is married with three young children, plans to use the 10cylinder, 500-horsepower Viper for getaway breaks from the family’s ’97 Dodge Caravan daily driver.

eeping the terminals sparkling clean with thousands of people rushing through each day is no easy task. Since April, Rosalinda Quiroz has been tackling this challenge, channelling her seemingly endless energy and enthusiasm into the job. Rosalinda ensures that YVR’s bathrooms, food courts and common areas are immaculate, and says she “feels bored when [she’s] not moving.” As a member of the Marquise Facilities Corporation housekeeping team, Rosalinda plays a vital role in creating a positive customer service experience for passengers. Last year, the Airport Authority and Marquise were named co-winners of the B.C. Shopping Centre Association’s Cleanliness/Housekeeping award, reflecting a shared commitment to customer service excellence. Not surprising, considering YVR has also been rated one of the world’s top 10 airports for customer service. Staff members who share Rosalinda’s commitment to customer service make such accomplishments possible. When asked what she likes best about working at YVR, Rosalinda answers that working at the airport makes her proud.

With her friendly and outgoing nature, she enjoys meeting people from around the world and having the opportunity to improve her English. What is perhaps most striking about Rosalinda is her desire to help people. On the day we met, she was mailing a letter that a passenger forgot to post. Just last month, the Airport Authority received a letter from a man who had been so touched with the kindness Rosalinda had shown his visually impaired wife that he wanted her efforts acknowledged. Rosalinda’s recent decision to join Marquise is the latest in a series of career turns. A legal secretary by training, Rosalinda worked under President Marcos as a senior stenographer for six years in her native Philippines, before leaving to become a nanny in Hong Kong. Nine years ago, when the family she worked for decided to move to Canada, she came, too. While working in Hong Kong, Rosalind learned to speak Cantonese, which she is able to use daily in the International Terminal. Outside of work, Rosalinda is passionate about her family, her home,

and cooking. Her daily routine includes waking each morning, often as early as five, to begin cooking before coming to the airport. Her specialties include classic Filipino recipes such as Lumpia, or spring rolls, and Pancit, or fried noodles. The dishes have won rave reviews with the Marquise staff and Rosalinda has even catered some of their staff functions. Next time you’re travelling internationally, stop by and say hello to Rosalinda, a hardworking Marquise employee and proud YVR ambassador.

Naramata Bench – The Heart of B.C.’s Wine Country

TRAVEL TALK

By Chelsea Bowles he month of October is not too late to visit what is quickly becoming one of Canada’s premier wine regions, British Columbia’s Naramata Bench. Founded in 1907 by orchard promoter John Moore Robinson, Naramata, located just 15 minutes from the lakeside resort town of Penticton, has a population of approximately 2,500. This area continues to gain international attention through its production of a variety of awardwinning wines. Sixteen wineries are nestled on either side of the winding road that leads from Penticton to Naramata. On the drive from downtown Penticton to Naramata, you’ll pass Mistral Estate Winery, Township 7, Benchland Vineyards, Spiller Estates, La Frenz Winery, Red Rooster Winery, D’Angelo Estate Winery, Poplar Grove, Hillside Estate Winery, Laughing Stock, Lang Vineyards, Lake Breeze Vineyards, Elephant Island Orchard Wines, Joie, Kettle Valley Winery, Therapy Vineyards

T

and finally, Nichol Vineyard. If you don’t have a map, signs will guide you along “winery row.” While summer is the busiest time for Okanagan wineries, many remain open during October. Most tastings are available for a nominal fee (reimbursable upon purchase), while others are free. Sommeliers introduce each wine and give brief explanations about the grapes used, the aging process and the flavours to be experienced. Usually, anywhere from four to eight wines are available for tasting—white to red—with the coveted dessert wines as the grand finish. Spittoon buckets are available and bread or crackers are available to fortify you between sips. Elephant Island Orchard Wines stands out among the traditional wineries, offering flavourful wines made not from grapes, but from local apricots, apples, cherries, and pears. If reds are your favourite, head to Poplar Grove, where they specialize

in three types of barrel-fermented versions, along with three types of artisan-style cheeses. Hillside, Red Rooster, and Lake Breeze all have bistros where you can enjoy a gourmet meal with a perfectly paired glass of wine and an outstanding view. The 12-room Naramata Heritage Inn & Spa, originally built in 1908, has undergone an extensive threeyear restoration and offers culinary dishes from their Rock Oven Dining Room and local wines at their Cobblestone Wine Bar. In between the winery tours, there is the natural lure of flora and fauna. Sagebrush, colourful flowers, fruitburdened trees, and grape-laden vines are perfect subjects for the amateur or professional photographer. Another lush sight is the purple field of lavender at Claybank Farm Lavender. You can buy several types of lavender to grow at home, or indulge in handcrafted beauty products. A morning bike ride or walk along

Though located in the heart of B.C. wine country, Claybank Farm Lavender has chosen to grow fields of fragrant lavender as a natural complement to the Naramata Bench agritourism.

part of the historic Kettle Valley Railway, now a trail, is worth the exercise. Granite caves and fantastic views of Okanagan Lake make it a memorable experience. Whether you go for a day trip or stay for a leisurely weekend, Naramata Bench offers a variety of

sights and tastes to discover at our own northern Napa Valley. You never know, you could find your next favorite B.C. wine at one of the small vineyards that are gaining international attention and winning prestigious awards at the annual Okanagan Wine Festival.
