As Vancouver gets set to host the event, now just four years away, preparations have kicked into high gear. As the Gateway to the Games, YVR will play a critical role in bringing the world to British Columbia. processing and convenience. The Airport Authority’s $1.0-billion capital program is also on track, with the Canada Line expected to be completed by late 2009, providing passengers with an economical and convenient method of travelling between downtown Vancouver, Richmond City Centre, and Vancouver International Airport. The first phase of the nine-gate expansion to the International Terminal is also underway. When the project is completed in 2009, YVR will be able to accommodate the newer, larger planes of the future, and the 21 million passengers expected by 2010.

By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer From Torino To YVR:

Managing Peaks of Olympic Proportions he Torino Olympics have come and gone, and what spectacular Games they were, with Canada’s athletes winning more medals in more events than ever before. Behind the celebration of athleticism was a team of organizers working tirelessly to make the splendour look effortless. One of the Torino 2006 Olympic Organizing Committee’s tasks was planning for athletes’ and spectators’ smooth passage through the airport. A key member of YVR’s management team was in Turin to learn from the Italians’ experience with passenger facilitation, and bring the learnings home to B.C., not only for 2010, but also for all major events that might cause an influx of passengers at YVR. Typically, airports are not well equipped to handle unusually large swells of passengers over a short period of time. All airports experience busy times when more passengers than usual will need to use the terminals—in the industry we call these “peaks”—and airport operators strive to manage peaks by reducing them wherever possible. The peak at the end of the Olympic Games is unavoidable, as athletes and spectators who arrived at different times for different events tend to depart in a condensed period of time following the closing ceremonies. Here at YVR we deal with large peaks, the most significant of which occurs from approximately 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. This peak is driven by flight banks at major Asian and European mega-hubs, and by the key windows of time for passengers in Eastern North America to depart to or get home from YVR before or after flying across the Pacific via the Vancouver gateway. Vancouver is a beautiful city with a strong tourism industry, and we are a popular port of call

T

for Alaska cruises. This also contributes to our peaks, which naturally go up during cruise season and the summer months. During peak periods, YVR generally operates at capacity. The advantage of dealing with such peaks is that we’ve long recognized the need to have processes and systems in place to deal with large influxes of passengers, and we’ve worked hard to prepare our airport to handle them smoothly. One of the ways we’ve managed peaks is through innovations in airport technology and processes to simplify the passenger experience, including our use of self-service check-in kiosks both at the airport and off site, cruise ship on-board check-in, and border programs like CANPASS Air and NEXUS Air. We call this series of programs designed to get passengers quickly and efficiently through the airport YVR FasTrack, and we’re always working to expand our initiatives. The future of simplified passenger travel is off-airport passenger and baggage check-in, and it’s a technology we’re already testing. Following the conclusion of the World Junior Hockey Tournament in Vancouver in January, 140 players from the Russian, Finnish, Swiss and Norwegian teams were checked in along with their baggage at three separate hotels. Baggage tags and boarding passes were distributed in advance, meaning the players didn’t have to haul their bulky hockey bags through the airport. With our experience and innovation in simplifying passenger travel, and the invaluable insight we’ll gain from Torino, we’re well on our way to a smooth journey in 2010, when YVR will represent both a starting place and a homecoming for many an Olympic dream.

New Report Indicates Aerospace Market Entering A Period Of Permanent Change A fter five challenging years, many industry analysts believe that the civil aerospace business is finally returning to normal. However, a new report from international accounting and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP indicates that shifts in the market’s traditional structure demonstrate it is not just returning to normal but in fact undergoing fundamental and lasting change. “Civil Aerospace in the 21st Century: Business as Usual…or a Fresh Start?” is the second in a series of aerospace papers published by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The report reviews the factors shaping today’s civil aircraft industry, identifies those that will affect its future and details five critical issues for contractors. “The growth of the Asia-Pacific market, the rise of the low-cost carrier and the development of the regional jet all promise major changes in how the civil aerospace market will operate in the future,” said Gregg Agens, U.S. Aerospace and Defense leader, PricewaterhouseCoopers. “Together with the prospect of more stringent environmental regulation, it means we are not, in fact, returning to ‘business as usual.’ It looks like a fresh start, and for an industry that still has to prove it can create value over the long term, this is a turning point.”

According to the report, over the last 30 years, a steady three per cent annual increase in world economic output has brought a range of measures by governments to liberalize and deregulate the airline industry. From an initial exclusive focus on safety and service, the rules now increasingly address efficiency and value. Supported by a manufacturing industry supplying new aircraft, new equipment and new supporting services, these factors have driven an 800 per cent increase in air travel since the 1970s. After five years of trauma—from SARS and international terrorism to soaring oil prices and conflict in the Middle East—aircraft order books now stand at record levels. Suppliers around the world are looking at ways to increase output, share prices are up and investors regard the sector as booming. While many expect a smooth return to a complete recovery in the civil aerospace market, the report identifies four factors that suggest that the future is going to be different. Asia-Pacific will overtake the U.S. and Europe as the major growth market for air travel over the next 20 years. Consequently, by 2023 the region will account for nearly onethird of worldwide passenger traffic—more than North America and only just behind Europe.

Low-cost carriers and aircraft leasing companies are here to stay as major buyers of new aircraft. While these carriers may provide 30 per cent of the global fleet by 2015, leasing companies have already increased their share of the fleet to 30 per cent as of the end of 2005. The regional jet has finally come of age. By 2015, regional carriers could be providing 50 per cent of global seat capacity. As the air transport industry

shrugs off the effects of recession, policy makers are being forced to turn their attention to the environment. Aviation is not yet seen as a model citizen. In September 2005, the European Commission announced its intention to include aviation in its Emissions Trading Scheme. Foundation, YVR, HSBC, Highbury Foundation and London Air Services. Located at the gateway to Vancouver International Airport (YVR), the new 27,000-square-metre ATC will expand training and skills development for its graduates, address lengthy enrolment waitinglist demands and the growing need for skilled graduates now in demand by B.C.’s aerospace industry. It will provide global access for collaboration with industry partners in the development of applied research and specific “type-certified” training requirements. At the new campus, BCIT, already the largest aerospace training school in Canada, will offer a full range of certificate, diploma and degree programs in aircraft maintenance engi-

neering, airport management, and flight operations. Scheduled to open in 2007, key features of the new facility will include: • more than 40 classrooms and “smart” labs with the latest training computers, equipment and wireless technology; • a lecture theatre with global teleconferencing capabilities; • an integrated research and resource library; • laboratories and classrooms that will support new programs in the fields of air traffic management, ambient intelligence and homeland security; and, • a dramatic 3,700-square-metre hangar for the BCIT fleet of 20 helicopters and aircraft, at the centre of

some operators would, some not. “An industry that has been a driving force in globalization is now, itself, on the brink of becoming global,” said Richard Hooke, Global Aerospace and Defense leader, PricewaterhouseCoopers. “So, while manufacturers are now leaner, more resilient and more efficient, fresh challenges clearly lie ahead.” The entire report can be downloaded at www.pwc.com/aerospaceanddefence/civilpaper.

the new campus. Through the support of industry and the Government of Canada, BCIT will enjoy the distinction of being the first post-secondary institution in Canada to have tower simulation technology, joining a handful of schools in North America that offer this technology; the University of North Dakota, Embry-Riddle and Dade College School of Aviation in Miami. The new ATC will include a virtual control tower with 3D “out-of-thewindow” displays as well as virtual radar simulation that represent enroute and terminal air-traffic control environments. This technology will offer BCIT students a significant advantage in the aerospace field, and demonstrate why the school continues to be a leader in aerospace training. “We have been inspired by the support we have received from the aerospace industry both here in Canada and abroad, which has resulted in several millions of dollars in contributions,” said Dr. Tony Knowles, president of BCIT. “This support will provide our students and industry partners with easier access to some of the most sophisticated equipment available today. This project is about innovation; it is about achieving new standards of excellence; and, above all, it is about an investment in the people in our community.” Throughout its history, BCIT has worked closely with industry leaders, exchanging new ideas and meeting the challenges faced by industry and for more than 40 years, BCIT has furnished the aerospace industry with more than 5,000 aviation graduates. With some 2,900 skilled aerospace workers expected to be hired in B.C. over the next five years, the new ATC positions BCIT to meet anticipated growth in demand for skills upgrading and training.

Aerospace Museum Lobbies To Keep Historic Airliner In Canada

1954 Lockheed L-1049G SuperConstellation. he Toronto Aerospace Museum at Downsview Park, Ontario, is campaigning to prevent the export of the last postwar, TransAtlantic, piston-engine airliner remaining in Canada. The fourengine 1954 Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation airliner is CFTGE, the fifth of 14 “Super Connies” purchased by TransCanada Air Lines (TCA) to expand passenger service in the 1950s and

early 1960s. (TCA was renamed Air Canada in 1965.) The aircraft is representative of the era when air travel replaced ocean liners as the primary means of travelling between Canada and Europe, and airports replaced harbours as the principal international gateway to Canada for business and immigrants. “Air Canada’s Super Constellation airliners were an important part of the story of Canada’s development as a

nation,” said Paul Cabot, curator of the Toronto Aerospace Museum. “We’re adding our voice to the many Canadian airline retirees and aviation heritage groups opposed to plans to export this historically significant aircraft to the United States of America.” TCA’s Super Connies were once the largest and most recognizable airliner in Canada. With its triple tail, porpoise-shaped fuselage and elliptical wing, the Constellation was widely considered the ‘queen of the skies’ in the 1950s. Most of the piston engine airliners of the postwar era quickly disappeared when the jet age began. “This aircraft has spent its entire 52-year life in Canada,” said Cabot. “It provided employment for thousands of Canadians in the 1950s and 1960s, and tens of thousands of immigrants flew to Canada on its wings. It’s an icon of air travel.” The Super Connie could fly more than 63 passengers 8,000 kilometres without a refuelling stop. They cut the flying time between Vancouver

and Toronto by several hours, and they inaugurated TCA’s first non-stop trans-Atlantic passenger flights. The fate of the Super Constellation is now being considered by Heritage Canada’s Moveable Cultural Properties Program, which is designed to prevent historically significant artefacts from leaving Canada. Several years ago, Canada’s aviation museums, under the umbrella of the Canadian Aeronautical Preservation Association (CAPA), a national body, successfully lobbied Ottawa to extend to historic aircraft the same protection given to other culturally

significant artefacts such as paintings and military medals. These steps were taken to ensure future generations of Canadians would have an opportunity to see important aircraft reflective of Canada’s rich aviation history. The museum is prepared to provide Super Constellation CF-TGE a home where it would become the centrepiece of a future exhibit on Canadian airline history. Members of the public can register their support to keep this Super Constellation in Canada at www.canadiansuperconnie.org.

YVR Meet Edward Li: The Host With The Most he thought of serving more than 16-million people per year would no doubt be exhausting to some, but HMSHost retail general manager Edward Li finds it invigorating. As general manager of numerous retail outlets at YVR, Edward’s focus is on providing excellent customer service and satisfying customers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Edward believes having consistently high customer service standards is paramount to business success and works to ensure that each HMSHost retail associate pursues ongoing development and training. His job also entails developing and executing operating targets and coordinating stock between the warehouse and stores to ensure customers have access to the latest products. Some of the retail brands under Edward’s careful watch include: British Columbia and Beyond, Gifts of the Raven, Daily News and perennial favourite Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

T

Edward says that beyond working with great people in a great environment, he and his team are driven to provide customer service excellence by the heartfelt letters of thanks from travellers. He says it is not uncommon for travellers to call or send a note thanking staff members for their help or commending HMSHost on the unparalleled level of service. A long-time resident of the Vancouver area, Edward has only

11

PEOPLE

been on the job for seven months but has spent more than 25 years in the retail industry. He says his love of YVR and the opportunity to work with such a diverse crowd were some of the reasons he came to the airport. With a career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Edward knows a thing or two about retail and plans to use this knowledge to keep HMSHost’s group of stores on the cutting edge of products and services.

Cathay Pacific Receives ATW’s Airline Of The Year Award Chen also dedicated the award to the people of Hong Kong. “As the home carrier of Hong Kong, we owe much to their [the people of Hong Kong’s] enterprising spirit, vitality, talent and determination, which has always been part of our corporate culture—striving always to do better,” said Chen. Chen acknowledged that receipt of the award was made even more special because Cathay Pacific is cele-

brating its 60th anniversary this year. “For an airline to win this award it should have provided exemplary service to the public while compiling a model safety record,” said J.A. Donoghue, ATW’s editorial director. “It should also have been innovative in developing new markets and services, been a leader in applying new technology to the airline industry, and consistently been profitable.”
