New Wing Takes Shape Y VR recently celebrated an important milestone with the completion of the structural steel framework for the International Terminal expansion—quite a feat when you consider 3,750 metric tones of steel were erected. To commemorate the occasion, Bob Cowan, senior vice president, Engineering, hosted a ceremony recognizing the outstanding efforts involved in meeting this challenge. Through the teamwork of several different groups, YVR was able to meet its goal. The team included: Empire Iron Works, PCL, the general contractor, Stantec, the lead architec-

tural firm, structural engineers Bush Bohlman and the YVR Project Management team headed by Ray Zibrik. The largest project of the Airport Authority’s $1.0-billion capital program, the $420-million, nine-gate expansion is progressing on time and on budget. By spring 2007, phase one of the International Terminal expansion will be completed, adding four

gates, two of which will be able to accommodate the new Airbus A380. For further information on the Airport Authority’s construction projects, visit www.yvr.ca and click on Construction.

YVR Soars As An Economic Engine For B.C. new economic impact study confirms that Vancouver International Airport (YVR) continues to be an integral part of British Columbia’s thriving economy, accounting for some 26,700 direct jobs and $6.8-billion in total economic output. The results were released earlier this month by Vancouver International Airport Authority president and CEO Larry Berg in a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade. Since the last study in 2000, YVR has

maintained its employment base, despite the aviation industry’s downturn following 9/11, SARS and record high fuel prices. The numbers of jobs, economic output and GDP have all grown over the past five years, even though the number of employers has dropped to 360 from 400 in that same period. “Our industry has gone through a number of changes and faced some significant challenges,” said Berg. “The airport business community has demonstrated an ability to

adapt and even grow during some tough times, solidifying YVR’s role as an economic generator in its own right, and a facilitator of provincial job creation.” The continued growth of the airport’s employment and economic impact between 2000 and 2005 is due to several factors including: • A 15 per cent growth in the number of SEE ECONOMIC ENGINE, CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Air Canada Accelerates Wide-Body Fleet Modernization Program ir Canada has signed a 10-year lease for one new Boeing 777-300ER from International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), accelerating its wide-body fleet renewal and modernization program. The airline will take delivery of the leased aircraft in May 2007, bringing the total number of Boeing 777s in its fleet to eight. Delivery of the leased aircraft will allow Air Canada to accelerate the return of an Airbus A340-300, originally scheduled to be returned to ILFC in mid-2009. The transaction is part of an ongoing renewal program to give Air Canada one of the most modern aircraft fleets in the world and provide savings on fuel, expanded range capabilities and other efficiencies.

A The Boeing 777-300ER (Extended Range) is powered by the General Electric GE 90115BL2 engine, the world’s largest and most powerful commercial jet engine.

In November 2005, Air Canada concluded agreements with Boeing for the acquisition of up to 36 Boeing 777s and up to 60 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The agreements include firm orders for 18 Boeing 777s, plus purchase rights for 18 more, in a yet-to-be determined mix of the 777 family’s newest models: the 777-300ER, the 777-200LR Worldliner and the 777 freighter. Delivery of the 777 aircraft is scheduled to commence in March 2007. The agreements also include firm orders for 14 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, plus options and purchase rights for an additional 46 aircraft. Air Canada’s first 787 is scheduled for delivery in 2010.
