PRESIDENT’S CORNER By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer
Keeping Cool When Summer Puts The Heat On chool is out, travel season is in full swing and here at YVR things are bustling. In fact, it’s shaping up as our busiest summer ever. In addition to the usual seasonal increase, which peaks in late August with about 900 take-offs and landings a day, we have the added summer traffic of cruise ship passengers. The cruise ship season started in May and this year we expect more than 580,000 cruise ship passengers will pass through YVR as they make their way to the Port of Vancouver and up the coast to Alaska and back. Ensuring visitors have a smooth journey through YVR requires a coordinated effort during summer months, when the sheer volume of passengers, especially during peak periods, pushes the limits of our available facilities and resources. We’re in the middle of the airport’s largest expansion to date, but in the meantime, how do we process more passengers efficiently? The answer is to do it smarter. To help ease congestion in the terminals, and provide cruise passengers with high levels of customer service, we’ve introduced a number of innovative programs to provide alternatives to traditional check-in and arrival processes. About 100,000 cruise ship passengers will go through the U.S. Direct program on both arriving and departing flights from YVR. The U.S. Direct program allows passengers to be transferred directly from their ship to their gate “in-transit,” making for a quick and easy journey.

YVR Lands No. 1 Spot With Travel Agents or the second year in a row, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has been selected as Canada’s top airport in the Agents’ Choice Readership Survey, an annual poll of Canadian travel agents. The survey, now in its seventh year, provides the largest sampling of travel agents’ opinions in Canada. YVR was recognized for its style and West Coast art that pays tribute to the province’s First Nations heritage. According to Canadian Travel
F
Press, “no other airport in Canada gives arriving passengers a grander greeting.” The waterfall located in the Customs and Immigration Hall was listed as a standout feature. For flights to and from Asia, YVR was listed as the preferred departure and entry point, with recognition for quick baggage delivery and a wellorganized airport. YVR scored 3,864 points, ahead of the number 2 spot held by Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, at 2,922 points.
Visitor Rebate Program Changes he Visitor Rebate Program is changing which is good news for travellers. As of July 1, travellers who have purchased individual items of less than $250 CAD (before taxes), no longer need to visit a R e b a t e Office. Only visitors who have purchased an item with an individual price of $250 CAD or more (before taxes) will be required to attend a Vi s i t o r R e b a t e to Office have their receipt validated. The visitor must present the receipt and the purchased item to the Visitor Rebate Office for a mandatory inspection. This is a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) requirement. Prior to July 1, visitors were required to report to a Visitor Rebate
T
Office to have their receipts validated and goods inspected in order to claim their rebate. To be eligible for the Visitor Rebate Program, receipts must have a value of $50.00 CAD each or more and the total pre-tax value of all receipts combined must be at least $200 CAD. Hotel receipts do not require validation. T h e Visitor Rebate Office’s operating hours are also changing. Beginning July 1, the office will be open from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. A popular rebate option is the instant cash GST rebate at the Global Refund kiosk adjacent to the Visitor Rebate Office. There is also an Instant Tax Refund on Level 3, U.S. Departures (Post-security).
Our expedited check-in processes are not limited to cruise ship passengers. Travellers in the terminals and parking lots can use one of our many self-service check-in kiosks, which allow passengers to access multiple airlines from one machine. Offsite customers can access kiosks at a growing list of Vancouver and Richmond locations—including hotels, the Tourism Vancouver Touristinfo Centre and Waterfront Station—and arrive at the airport with their boarding pass in hand. Once at YVR, passengers will have extra assistance from a ramped-up customer service team. Dressed in distinctive red vests, customer service representatives and summer students are easy to identify and are available to answer questions. Our Green Coat volunteers are also quick to offer a smile or a helping hand. So while the summer travel peak puts the heat on YVR, plans are in place to handle the influx and ensure our passengers enjoy the great services and facilities for which we’ve become known, including four new international gates and more check-in and baggage capacity by next summer. With no slow-down in passenger travel expected, our plans for the future are also on track. The $1-billion construction program now underway ensures we’ll be ready with new terminal facilities, gate capacity, shops and services, and the latest airport technology when passenger traffic increases to around 20million by 2010.

School’s Out, Travel’s In YVR Prepares For Busiest Summer Ever s the mercury begins to climb, so does traffic at YVR. Summer is the busiest time of year with up to 60,000 passengers travelling through the terminals on peak days. With a record 16.9-million passengers forecast for the year, this summer promises to be the busiest YVR has seen. “Passengers travelling through YVR this summer will notice construction work in the terminal and on the airfield as we undertake our largest construction program ever,” said Paul Levy, Airport Authority vice president of operations. “When completed, the addition of international gates and new check-in areas will allow us to serve more passengers and continue our standing as one of the world’s leading airports. We are working with our business partners to minimize any inconvenience, but passengers should be prepared for an increasing amount of activity in the terminal.” August is the busiest month at YVR with close to 900 take-offs and landings expected each day. Typically, passenger traffic reaches a high in the third week of August from an increase in charter aircraft, student traffic
A
and cruise ship passengers. This season, YVR expects more than 580,000 cruise ship passengers from 28 cruise ships travelling through YVR until October. An estimated 100,000 passengers will go through the US Direct program on both arriving and departing flights from YVR. To help ease congestion in the terminals, and provide cruise ship passengers with high levels of customer service, Vancouver International Airport Authority has introduced a number of innovative programs to provide alternatives to traditional check-in and arrival programs. “YVR’s FasTrack programs, such as our highly successful onboard cruise ship check-in, help us process passengers quickly,” said Levy. “By taking advantage of technology, we are able to get passengers to their gates faster, accommodate increasing demand and ultimately offer better customer service.” Expedited check-in processes aren’t only for cruise ship passengers. The Airport Authority has introduced a number of alternatives to minimize hassle for customers in the terminals. From Common Use Self-
Service (CUSS) Kiosks, which allow passengers to access multiple airlines from one machine, to a growing list of kiosks at downtown and Richmond locations, passengers are discovering an increasing number of alternatives to traditional check-in. Several airlines are now also offering website check-in, which allows passengers to check-in from the comfort of their home and then head straight to the baggage drop at the terminal. To help passengers keep their cool throughout the summer season, the Airport Authority is ramping up its customer service team. Dressed in distinctive red vests, customer service representatives and summer students are easy to identify and are available to answer questions, while YVR’s Green Coat volunteers are quick to offer a smile or helping hand. Speaking a combined 26 languages, up to 85 customer service staff will be on-hand every day to provide assistance where needed. For additional travel tips, including the latest information on security and baggage restrictions, real-time flight information and links to airline websites visit the YVR website at www.yvr.ca.

British Airways Introduces New Baggage Policies
British Airways Boeing 757-200.
ritish Airways has announced changes to its baggage allowance, to be phased in over a four-month period.
B
Starting this month, all British Airways’ passengers will be allowed to carry one standard-sized bag (56 centimetres x 45 centimetres x 25
centimetres) and one briefcase, laptop computer bag or equivalent on all flights; briefcases, laptop computer bags, or equivalent must fit under the
seat in front of the passenger. Hand baggage weight restrictions will also be removed, but passengers must be able to lift their bag unaided into the aircraft’s overhead lockers. British Airways will have gauges available at airports for travellers to measure their hand baggage before proceeding to airport security checks. “Making the airport experience simpler and speedier for our customers is one of our key corporate objectives,” said Robin Hayes, British Airways’ executive vice president, The Americas. “We have created new policies that are easier to understand and will reduce queuing time at airports.” Further changes will occur from October 11, 2006, when British Airways will introduce a singleallowance system based on the number of bags that can be checked in. First, Club World, Club Europe and World Traveller Plus passengers will be able to check two bags free of charge. World Traveller passengers travelling to or from Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with local
government regulations, while Euro Traveller and U.K. Domestic passengers will be able to check one bag. Baggage exceeding the free checked-baggage allowances will be charged a fixed fee depending on trip length. Infants will be allowed one checked bag, plus a collapsible baby buggy, free of charge, in all classes and on all routes. In addition to the checked-in baggage allowance, customers will be able to carry one piece of sporting equipment, such as golf clubs and skis, free of charge. A maximum weight of 23 kilograms will apply to all bags. An industry leader, British Airways is offering its customers the opportunity to pre-pay for their excess baggage on-line before arriving at the departure airport. Those taking advantage of the new scheme will benefit from a 20 per cent discount from the airline’s website. Also effective October 11, 2006, all pets on British Airways’ flights will be carried as cargo only. For details of these new policies and up-to-date baggage allowances, visit www.ba.com/baggagepolicy.

With an updated look and new plush seating, travellers can relax with a cool beverage or a cup of java. “I think travellers would be hard pressed to be bored in the terminal this summer,” said Gilliland. “Our shops and services are consistently rated among the best in the world and we are constantly trying to raise the bar.”

Zooming Non-Stop To Belfast Map of the Northern Ireland Causeway Coast and Glens of Antrim.
Servisair handles check-in and ground handling at both Belfast International Airport and YVR.
Wall murals remind visitors of a very different Belfast, when sectarian violence was an everyday occurrence. Today, visitors can take tours of the key areas made famous during ‘the troubles.’
ast month, Zoom Airlines new Vancouver-Belfast-Cardiff service departed from Vancouver. The Ottawa-based airline is the only Canadian air carrier that provides non-stop service from Vancouver to Belfast and the only carrier servicing the Vancouver-Cardiff route. The new service, which will run up to October 30, 2006, departs from YVR every Monday at 8 p.m. Return flights from Belfast and Cardiff depart weekly on Saturdays, arriving in Vancouver at 1:55 p.m. Zoom prides itself on its reasonable prices and superior customer service, which in Economy includes meals, drinks and in-flight entertainment. The airline also offers a Premium Economy service that includes extra legroom, 30 kilograms of free, checked baggage (as opposed to 20 kilograms in Economy), complimentary headsets and alcoholic beverages and pre-assigned seating. On the inaugural flight, which departed from YVR on June 12, the cabin crew was friendly and efficient, providing seat directions and assisting with on-board baggage. In Premium Economy, the food was good and there were four recent film releases to pass the time. Zoom has been providing transatlantic service since 2002, and has added the Northern Ireland destination of Belfast because of the increasing number of Canadians who visit

The packed inaugural flight attested to the interest in this new service. “We are pleased to add Belfast and Cardiff to the list of now six gateways we offer from Vancouver to Europe,” said Kristopher Dolinki, CEO, Zoom Airlines. “We are extremely excited to offer more choice and flexibility to transatlantic travel and we endeavour to continue to offer the lowest scheduled airfares across the Atlantic.” On landing at Belfast International Airport, deplaning passengers were greeted with a warm welcome by airport staff, as well as Irish music and a sampling of the country’s famous soda bread.
According to Uel Hoey, business development director at Belfast International Airport, the airport is anticipating that the combination of two-way leisure and “friends and relatives” traffic from Vancouver to Belfast will make the new Zoom service a real success. Booming Belfast Once in Belfast, it’s easy to see why Zoom has chosen it as a destination. There are lots of exciting things to do and intriguing places to explore in this vibrant European city. Formerly notorious for its turbulent political climate, Belfast is now a progressive city, with a booming economy, myriad cafés and an increase in

Catch The Spirit Of B.C.’s Rare North Coast

ooking to escape the grind of the city? Head for the wilderness. Just a 90-minute flight from YVR lies spectacular nature, boundless recreational opportunities and the Spirit Bear. This summer discover Princess Royal Island in the Great Bear Rainforest region, the largest remaining temperate coastal rainforest in the world and the playground of B.C.’s rare white Kermode, or Spirit Bear, now the province’s official mammal. Found only in B.C’s north coast rainforests, the Kermode bear is actually an unusual form of the black
L
bear. Its distinctive white colouring is the result of a double recessive gene inherited from both parents. On Princess Royal Island, the bear population has been isolated for so long that this recessive gene appears in about 10 per cent of the black bear population. With no more than a few hundred Kermode bears existing, the Government of B.C. recently designated more than 200,000 hectares of the Spirit Bear’s habitat, including the more than 103,000-hectare Kitasoo Spirit Bear Conservancy on Princess Royal Island, protected areas. One of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world, the area contains more than 15-million acres yet has only 25,000 inhabitants. Spirit Bear motorboat tours are held during the fall salmon-spawning season from mid-August to early October, when chances for sighting the mythical bear are high. The largest island on B.C.’s central coast, Princess Royal Island is home to spectacular wildlife. In addition to the Kermode bear, animal enthusiasts can spot black bears, grizzly bears, deer, wolves and foxes. Or grab your binoculars and watch golden eagles, bald eagles and the marbled murrelet take flight. Looking for some exercise? Paddle a kayak out past sandy beaches, granite cliffs and mountain peaks
and view the region’s marine life, including elephant seals, orcas and porpoises. Staying on dry land more your style? Then wade in and try your luck at catch-and-release fly-casting. The area’s rivers and streams are rich with salmon, halibut, rockfish, lingcod and yellow eye. If you’re lucky, you may even glimpse one of the area’s 14metre humpback whales. And when you’re tired, head to the luxurious King Pacific Lodge in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. A floating oasis, the building offers the perfect spot to unwind with a massage, or retire with a drink while gazing out over Barnard Harbour. Each fall, the 17-room, 1,860-square-metre structure is hauled 145 kilometres back to Prince Rupert from its mooring off Princess Royal Island to keep development off the island. For more information on the Spirit Bear and the Great Bear Rainforest visit the Government of B.C.’s website at www.bcspiritbear.ca. Princess Royal Island is 520 kilometres north of Vancouver and 200 kilometres south of Prince Rupert, accessible only by boat or air. Air Canada offers two daily flights to Prince Rupert, and Hawkair flies the route daily from YVR. For further information, visit www.yvr.ca and click on Flight Information.

Airbus Delivery Delay Causes Top Executives To Resign irbus SAS president and chief executive officer Gustav Humbert has resigned, following the A380s production and delivery delay. He has also resigned from Airbus’ parent, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company’s (EADS) executive committee. Co-chief executive of EADS, Noel Forgeard, has also resigned. To maintain a Franco-German balance between its two biggest shareholders, France’s Lagardere SCA and Germany’s DaimlerChrysler, EADS had two CEOs. Since June 2005, Humbert served as president and CEO and from July 2000 was a member of Airbus’s executive committee. From July 2000 to June 2005, Humbert was the company’s chief operating officer and was the executive vice president of programmes between March 2004 and June 2005. “The recently announced delay on the A380 production and delivery programme has been a major disappointment for our customers, our shareholders and our employees,” said Humbert. “As president and CEO of Airbus, I must take responsibility for this setback and feel the right course of action is to offer my resignation to our shareholders.” On June 13, Airbus announced that

a review of the A380 programme determined that delivery would be delayed by six to seven months due to production ramp-up issues. As a result, Airbus concluded that 2007 deliveries would be limited to nine, and that a shortfall of five to nine aircraft deliveries in 2008 and approximately five air-
craft in 2009 could be expected. Humbert said that the A380 programme’s current delay was a temporary industrial issue and would have no effect on the performance and market recognition of the aircraft. However, he felt a new management team should
lead Airbus into the future. “A new leadership can only be formed with a new chairman and a new president and CEO. The new management must then be empowered to drive forward those issues which we have started to address over the last 12 months.”
Emirates, the A380’s biggest customer, and Singapore Airlines, its first buyer, are seeking compensation from Airbus for late delivery. Qantas Airways Ltd., Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd, with six on order, have also said they’ll seek penalties.
Greener Technology Rides Into YVR aking a taxi from YVR? There’s a good chance you’ll be in a “green” vehicle. The Vancouver Airport Authority is working towards reducing vehicle emissions as part of its commitment to sustainability. With thousands of passengers travelling from YVR each day, taxis have a major environmental impact. Though any company may drop off passengers at YVR, only taxi companies that have qualified for a license
T
with the Airport Authority may pick up outbound passengers. As an incentive, the Airport Authority provides a $500 annual discount on the licensing fee to hybrid taxis or alternative-fuel vehicles with proven emission reductions. To date, 12 different taxi companies, representing 75 per cent of the outbound taxi companies, have joined the program. Taxis leaving YVR must be seven model years or younger, and replace-
ment vehicles must be five model years or younger. Vehicles participating in the “green” vehicle program are typically much younger. The taxi program targets a specific transportation sector and acts as a leader in encouraging local businesses to reduce emissions. Plans include the creation of a Sea Island fuel station offering clean or alternative-fuel options such as biodiesel. A hydrogen shuttle bus is also under consideration.

ver felt lucky enough to buy a lotto ticket at YVR? Chances are Nassir Karmali sold it to you. For the past decade, Nassir has been manning the lottery kiosk on Level 3 of the Domestic Terminal. As proprietor of the kiosk, and one of only two lottery retailers in the terminal, Nassir’s chief responsibility is to sell, sell, sell, and to date he’s been very successful. Each year, Nassir sells dreams in the form of 6/49, Scratch n’ Win, Super 7 and Keno tickets. In addition, Nassir also manages three part-time employees. Despite his location next to the Customer Information Counter, Nassir receives plenty of questions from travellers— providing interaction he enjoys. One of his favourite aspects of working at YVR is the chance to meet new people and learn about different cultures. A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nassir has developed some impressive linguistic skills. In addition to English, Nassir speaks French, Swahili, Hindi, Gujarati (from the state of Gujarat in western India), Koli, Kachi (a language of Pakistan), Lingala (spoken throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo), along with some Italian, Croatian and Spanish. As a lottery retailer, Nassir has witnessed several superstitious customs. The most bizarre? “I once had a customer ask that I kiss their lottery ticket for good luck,” recalled Nassir. He has also noticed that some customers will only purchase tickets dur-
ing certain hours of the day or continue to play the same numbers day in and day out. One customer even asked that Nassir not to wish him good luck, something he routinely does with his customers. But while superstitions are undoubtedly interesting to observe, Nassir said the real challenge comes from “selling a ticket to a non-believer.” Nassir said that the amount people spend on their lottery purchase is directly correlated to the size of the jackpot, and that people generally buy tickets when they feel lucky. People from all walks of life take their chances with the lotto, and many are secretive about the numbers they choose. During his time at YVR, Nassir has also become the confidant of several airport employees, listening to their stories and their dreams. Wondering if Nassir has ever sold a big winner? The answer to the mil-
lion-dollar question is yes. The biggest prize from a ticket bought at his kiosk was $6-million. Interestingly, Nassir has found it’s usually not the big winners who share the wealth, but the winners of smaller prizes, typically in the thousand-dollar range. Some winners have shared a portion of their winnings, while others come bearing gifts such as spirits. Some of the challenges Nassir faces are dealing with upset or exhausted travellers. “Sometimes travel makes people stress-out and I will try and help them in any way I can,” said Nassir. “If I can make their day easier, I will.” Nassir’s kiosk is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. At the end of the day, Nassir enjoys reading, gardening and trying his luck at the 6/49.

Project Runway n June 9, planes weren’t the only things going down runways at YVR. Airport employees took to the fashion runway to unveil their recycled haute couture creations. The fashion show was in celebration of Environment Week, held June 4-10, with contestants using recycled materials, such as newspapers, plastics and metal, to make their costumes. Contestants were judged on originality and innovation, creative use of media, quality of construction, accessories and, of course, catwalk strut. In addition to a $300 first prize, contestants vied for lunch at the Fairmont Hotel, a round of golf at the University Golf Club and other prizes. In addition to the Fashion Show, Airport Authority employees took

Court Rules To Delay Decision On Hawkair’s Restructuring
ast month, a BC Supreme Court ruling awarded Hawkair eight months to improve its financial stability. On June 8, Justice Grant Burnyeat ruled to delay voting on Hawkair’s proposed creditor payment plan until the first quarter of 2007. “The better we do between now and the first quarter of 2007, the more we can potentially offer our creditors,” said Tom Beshr, Hawkair’s general manager. “The Judge clearly let us know that he is there to make sure Hawkair gets the chance it deserves and that any one creditor is not going to be able to jeopardize this [creditor payment plan].” The airline filed for creditor protection last October as a result of higher fuel prices, insurance costs and stiff industry competition, causing the airline to miss aircraft lease payments. Since then, Hawkair has focused
L
on restructuring its business model and reorganizing its finances. In celebration of the ruling, Hawkair hosted a wine-and-cheese reception on June 20 at YVR’s South Terminal. The event provided airline officials with the opportunity to thank its customers and employees. “We have shown steady improvement in all areas of our business, thanks to our dedicated Hawkair staff at YVR, those throughout the Hawkair organization and our very supportive clients and customers,” said Beshr. Hawkair operates a fleet of 37-seat DeHavilland Dash 8 aircraft, which provide daily service between Prince Rupert, Terrace-Kitimat, Dawson Creek, Fort St John and Vancouver’s South Terminal.
