The introduction of the new logo also coincided with additional development projects in and around the airport, including the construction of the YVR portion of the Canada Line and the Link Building, a central passenger hub that will connect the International and Domestic terminals, slated for completion by summer 2007. With a growing number of passengers and changes within the airline industry, YVR continues to expand and adapt to meet the needs of the industry and its customers. The building, which opened as scheduled on March 1 for airline maintenance, testing and familiarization, features 400 metres of moving walkways to facilitate passenger movement through the terminal; 27 plasma signs that switch between multiple languages to help international passengers navigate the airport; and a first for YVR—checkin kiosks located at each of the new gates, to help passengers rebook flights quickly in the event of a cancellation. Come June 2007, the unique design features of the central pavilion area will be finished, including a large aquarium displaying indigenous marine life, a 113,000-litre seawater tank housing 100 moon jellyfish, and a stream running through the centre of the building. Ray Zibrik, president of YVR Project Management, the subsidiary company responsible for overseeing the project, recognized the completion of the building was made possible by the dedication of hundreds of people. “I would like to thank all of the skillful and dedicated workers, engineers and designers, who have given more than 900,000 hours of hard work since the project’s inception in 2005, for completing the expansion on time and on budget.” The project was funded through a combination of airport revenue sources, including retail sales, airplane landing fees and the Airport Improvement Fee. The $1-billion construction program is expected to generate 5,200 person-years of employment and $525-million in direct GDP.

Specifically, YVR’s exemplary customer service; its creation of a sense of place for visitors; innovation in passenger services; and its role as an international gateway were identified as areas of strength. Key elements of the new logo include a West Coast colour palette reflecting the land, sea and sky themes of the airport’s modern facilities and architectural design, an arc element that references flight, and a simple new tagline— “Beyond, Every Day”—to describe YVR’s approach to its business. Designed by Hangar 18 Creative Group, the new logo will be reflected in everything from airport signage and uniforms, to vehicles and

PRESIDENT’S CORNER By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer
Celebrating The Changing Face Of YVR he face of YVR has changed dramatically in the 15 years since the airport was transferred to the Airport Authority. This month we celebrated our evolution with the introduction of a new look, reflecting how far we’ve come and where we’re going. On this occasion, I wanted to take a look back at all that has happened in the last decade and a half. In 1992, Vancouver International Airport was one of the first four airports in Canada transferred from the Federal Government to local community-based, not-for-profit organizations. At that time we had less than 10-million passengers per year, and we embarked on an ambitious program to develop the airport. Shell Aerocentre opened at YVR in 1993. A year later, the northeast finger of the Domestic Terminal was demolished to make way for the construction of a new $250-million, 16-gate International Terminal, which was completed in 1996. That same year, operations began on the 3,030metre-long north parallel runway, which had Canada’s first Category III instrument landing system. 1997 saw the completion of the east apron expansion and the de-icing lagoon, while 1999 brought the eastward expansion of the International Terminal’s transborder check-in area and the four-diamond, 400-room Fairmont Vancouver Airport. Also in 1999, the South Terminal—the original terminal built in the 1930s—underwent a $3.5million expansion, and Helijet opened its hangar/terminal on the south side. Development continued in 2000, when the new $114million east wing of the International Terminal opened, adding seven gates to the transborder facility. A year later, phase one of the $53-million upgrade of the Domestic Terminal was completed, transforming the north half of the building with an open floor plan, natural lighting from floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights, a state-of-the-art baggage system, new flight information displays and selfservice check-in kiosks. The $40-million airport connector project was completed in 2001, greatly improving traffic flow between the airport and Highway 99. The work included a new three-lane
T
bridge. Later that year, a $39-million combined aircraft deicing, staging and servicing facility was opened as an expansion to the west apron. A decade after the Airport Authority began operating YVR, work was completed on the $53-million upgrade of the Domestic Terminal, and UPS finalized its lease with the Airport Authority to develop a regional air hub on the northlands (between the north runway and Sea Island Conservation Area), making UPS the anchor tenant for new development of the northlands. Which brings us to our most recent construction program, the largest to date. In 2005, we began work on construction projects that will total $1-billion by 2010. Now, three years later, on our 15-year anniversary, we’re unveiling the cornerstone of YVR’s construction program—the new International Terminal wing. Set to open fully in summer 2007, the expansion will add more than 36,000 square metres of floor space, including four new gates, two of which will accommodate the new Airbus A380, and an unprecedented array of shops, services and amenities. A large aquarium showcasing B.C.’s indigenous sea life will serve as its centrepiece. 2007 will also see the opening of the new Link Building, joining the International and Domestic terminals and providing increased international check-in capacity, passenger screening, additional baggage systems and office space. The five-storey structure’s curved glass facade will present a new face for passengers arriving at the airport. It is fitting that the Link Building will also serve as the point of entry for the Canada Line, the rapid transit project connecting Richmond, downtown Vancouver and the airport that has already changed the face of YVR. In addition to the major construction projects, other improvements and additions are underway. As with the past 15 years, YVR will continue to evolve. We’re pleased to go forward with a new, modern logo, reflecting our modern facilities and unique West Coast style. Welcome to the new face of YVR.

Behind the Scenes: A Look Into YVR’s De-Icing Operations Jason McArthur
s any local resident has observed, Greater Vancouver experienced an unusually snowy winter season. At YVR, snow and ice accumulation can mean disruptions to the nearly 700 daily flights and thousands of passengers travelling through the airport each day. YVR’s focus during inclement weather is to ensure that aircraft are able to take-off and land safely and with minimal delays. For safety purposes, aircraft must be de-iced during freezing conditions to remove all snow and ice from the wings, engine inlets and fuselage. This ensures a smooth flow of air over the surface of the wings, which provides lift during take-off. De-icing operations involve a coordinated effort between several entities. The Airport Authority clears runways and aprons and is responsible for constructing de-icing stations, including the new one that opened in 2006. It also monitors the environmental impact of de-icing chemicals on storm water runoff. De-icing of aircraft is performed by four air carriers and ground-handling agents. Additionally, Inland Technologies collects and recycles the de-icing runoff. Two types of de-icing agents are used at YVR and both are similar to automotive antifreeze. One type is a heated spray melts and removes ice and the other type prevents ice from reforming. On average, 20 to 40 litres of fluid are applied to ice-covered wings, and it takes about 25 minutes and three de-icing platform vehicles to de-ice a wide-body aircraft that is
A
completely covered in snow. The main ingredients in de-icing fluid are glycol and water, as well as a small amount of other chemicals to help prevent corrosion. “While there is a low amount of toxicity, the real concern is that glycol
consumes oxygen from water slowing down the freezing process,” said Simon Robinson of the Airport Authority’s Environment Department. “If the chemical were to be released into the regular drainage system, fish and aquatic life could be
harmed by lower oxygen levels in the water supply.” The Canadian Environment Protection Act’s Glycol guidelines require glycol levels in storm water to not exceed 100 milligrams per litre. To meet this environmental standard, the Airport Authority has invested in de-icing pads and catchment lagoons for de-icing fluid runoff. When the pads are activated, drainage ditches contain gates that redirect runoff into designated lagoons where the effluent is retrieved by Inland Technologies. Inland also operates a fleet of specialized vacuum glycolrecovery vehicles that collect any spilled fluid from the tarmac during spraying. The vehicles are used mostly when aircraft are permitted to deice at airport gates, which usually occurs during light frost. Site manager Randy Strohan over-
sees Inland’s YVR operation. By current projections, it will take about eight months to process the 8.7-million litres of glycol runoff and storm water collected this year alone. “This year we will be processing quite a large volume of de-icing runoff, it should keep us quite busy well into the summer,” said Strohan. During the process, water is separated and returned to the water supply while the glycol is restored to its concentrated form. The recycled product is then transported to Alberta, where it is used in the mining industry. Storm water test results for the 2006-2007 winter season have been promising. “We have measured only two occurrences this season where glycol concentration levels exceeded 100 milligrams per litre, matching the previous 2005/06 season’s results,” said Robinson.
Profits in Canada’s Air Transportation Industry To Recover Lost Ground This Year L ower fuel prices will allow profits in Canada’s air transportation industry to regain lost ground in 2007, according to the Conference Board’s Canadian Industrial Outlook: Canada’s Air Transportation IndustryWinter 2007. “Rising demand among domestic travellers will generate healthy revenue growth for the industry, but lower fuel prices and smaller increases in labour costs are the key
factors driving the improvement in profits,” said Michael Burt, senior economist with the Conference Board. Canada’s air transportation industry profits dropped more than 30 per cent last year, from $537-million in 2005, to $372-million in 2006. Despite strong sales and price growth in 2006, fuel and labour costs grew even faster. Profits are expected to reach
$482-million in 2007 and steadily increase over the next four years. Very strong growth in domestic demand has been a key support for the industry over the past two years. This growth is expected to moderate in 2007, but will remain strong— more than five per cent per year over the next five years. Travel demand from nonCanadians has been much weaker in recent years. Confusion over the
implementation date of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and a strong Canadian dollar contributed to a decline in the number of Americans visiting Canada in 2006. With the implementation of the new passport rules for air travellers in January, expected to further reduce the number of visitors from the United States, growth from foreign travellers will remain weak in 2007.

irbus forecasts that the Chinese Mainland will need more than 3,000 passenger aircraft and freighters from 2006 to 2025, including some 2,050 single aisle aircraft, nearly 600 small twin-aisle aircraft, more than 200 intermediate twin-aisle aircraft and 180 very large aircraft. Freighter traffic in China is expected to grow six-fold and will need close to 400 freighter aircraft
A
over the next 20 years. China’s freighter traffic demand will remain at a high level, with an average annual domestic market growth rate of 10.9 per cent and an international market growth rate of 8.9 per cent. “In terms of in-service aircraft, Airbus’ market share on the Chinese Mainland has already increased from seven per cent in 1995 to the current 35 per cent,” said John Leahy, Airbus chief operating officer customers.” Our aim is to reach 50 per cent in 2011. In next 20 years, the greatest demand for passenger aircraft will
come from the Chinese Mainland just after the United States.” The drivers of China’s dynamic air transport growth include: • Strong economic growth (eight per cent for the next 10 years) • Progressive market liberalization in China • Fast growth in household spending on transport • Addressable market for air traffic to reach 650 million consumers by 2015 • Large Chinese outbound tourism wave coming • China becoming a major tourism/business destination • More export of high value manufacturing goods and emergence of a domestic express market. The concentration of the population, the very dynamic and large Chinese cities, combined with the vast potential outbound tourism will translate in a substantial requirement for large aircraft in the next decade. The delivery of Airbus aircraft to the Chinese Mainland has enjoyed a sustained growth. In 2005, 56 new Airbus aircraft were delivered to airlines on the Chinese Mainland, accounting for 15 per cent of Airbus deliveries worldwide. In 2006, Airbus achieved further growth with a total delivery of 76 new aircraft, accounting for 18 per cent of Airbus deliveries worldwide.
New Non-Stop Service Between Vancouver And Auckland eginning in November, Air New Zealand will launch thrice-weekly non-stop flights between Vancouver and Auckland, New Zealand. The new service will initially operate between November 2, 2007 and March 28, 2008 to coincide with the peak travel season between the two destinations. “We are committed to creating at least one new long-haul international destination each year and Vancouver proved an ideal strategic fit, due in part to Canada’s thriving economy,” said Roger Poulton, Air New Zealand vice president – the Americas. “At any one time, we have more than 20 routes under consideration as part of our longterm strategy to grow the airline.” Air New Zealand’s direct service reduces travel time to a little over 14 hours, whereas previous itineraries from Vancouver to New Zealand totalled an average of around 20 hours. Star Alliance partner Air Canada will also be code sharing on this service. “In 2006, Canadians set a new record with 46,000 travellers visiting New Zealand, which marks an increase of more than 10,000 visitors in just a little more than five years,” said Bruce Lahood, Tourism New
B
Zealand vice president for North America. “But even more importantly, according to a survey of Canadian travellers in January of 2006, 99 per cent returned home satisfied with their vacation to New Zealand and more than 95 per cent would recommend the destination to their friends, family and colleagues.” The new service will also provide a convenient one-stop route for Canadians travelling to many Australian destinations and will minimize the requirement of transiting through the United States. Flight schedules from Vancouver will leave on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and are designed to meet the needs of both business and leisure passengers with an early evening departure time. Air New Zealand will use its fleet of Boeing 777-200ERs, which feature lie-flat beds, vast entertainment options and award-winning food and wine. Alaska Airlines’ Boeing 737-800 “Starliner 75” aircraft.
Alaska Airlines Introduces ‘Starliner 75’ Aircraft To Celebrate 75th Anniversary laska Airlines has introduced “Starliner 75,” a new 737-800 featuring a 1940s paint scheme, to celebrate the airline’s 75th anniversary. The aircraft was unveiled at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport before making its inaugural flight to Anchorage, Alaska, where the airline was founded in 1932. Alaska’s “Starliner” livery was introduced in 1945 after the airline changed its name from Alaska Star Airlines to Alaska Airlines. It first appeared on Douglas DC-3s and was featured on Curtiss C-46s and Douglas DC-4s through the 1950s. Painted to simulate polished aluminum, Starliner 75 features a blue star on the nose, the original Alaska Airlines logo with an Alaska map and the North Star, and a 75th-anniversary logo on the tail. A 1940s Boeing logo also appears near the nose. “This aircraft is a testament to our extraordinary employees, whose ‘Alaska Spirit’ has allowed the airline to reach its 75th year in a challenging industry, and to dream about the next 75 years,” said Bill Ayer, Alaska Airlines’ chairman and CEO.
A
“Starliner 75 also honours the state of Alaska and Boeing, both exceptional partners in Alaska Airlines’ past and its future.” Mark Jenkins, vice president and general manager of The Boeing Company’s 737 program, hailed the airline for reaching the milestone. “On behalf of the Boeing men and women who design, build and support the 737, we congratulate Alaska Airlines on its 75th year in business,” said Jenkins. “We’re proud to be Alaska’s hometown partner and we thank the airline for choosing to fly Boeing airplanes.” Boeing’s Paint Hangar Four Team in Seattle painted Starliner 75 in four days using 416 litres of paint. Alaska Airlines employees selected the design from four historic liveries that also included the airline’s 1950s “Blue Thunderbird,” early-1960s “Red Thunderbird” and late-1960s “Golden Nugget” designs. After arriving in Anchorage as Flight 1, the aircraft will continue service to Fairbanks, Alaska. Starliner 75 is the 18th 737-800 to join Alaska Airlines’ fleet. By the end
of 2008, the airline will complete its transition to an all-Boeing 737 fleet by retiring its remaining MD-80s and speeding the acquisition of nextgeneration, fuel-efficient 737-800s. Once completed, the transition is expected to save more than $115-million annually in operating expenses, primarily by lowering costs for fuel, maintenance, training and crew scheduling. 1945 Starliner.

Famous Keukenhof Gardens Come Into Bloom Again olland’s world-famous spring gardens, the Keukenhof, will be in full bloom again when it opens its gates officially on March 21, the first day of spring. The park will be open from March 22 to May 20, 2007. Theme Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the eldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, will open the 58th edition of the international Keukenhof flower exhibi-
H
tion. The presence of the princess will lend extra distinction to the Keukenhof theme for 2007: “Linnaeus: King of Flowers Turns 300.” This year marks the third centenary of the birth of the Swedish physician and botanist Carolus Linnaeus. Keukenhof chose this theme to accentuate the vital role that Linnaeus played in the world of bulb cultivation. To this day, tulips are
named according to a classification system developed by Linnaeus in the eighteenth century. The theme will be repeated through many different shapes and forms throughout the park. Blue and yellow will be the predominant tones of the plant arrangements. An inspirational garden based on Sweden’s national colours and exhibitions of Swedish art will be on display. The theme was launched a few months ago when a group of children planted bulbs for the mosaic of Pippi Longstocking, the heroine from the children’s books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The huge portrait of Pippi (approximtely 15 x 11 metres) will blossom in spring of 2007. Royal Hats The Keukenhof Gardens, with more than seven million bulbs, also features a number of special events, with as highlight, now in its fourth year, a special exhibit on the use of flowers in hat making. The exhibit will also feature hats as part of an international hat-making competition named, “Royal Hats.” Top hat designers and artists from all over the world have been invited to let their imaginations soar. Visitors can also feast their eyes on a selection of real royal hats, which have been specially loaned to the Keukenhof for the exhibition. History Keukenhof was originally the herb

In 1840, the horticultural architects Zocher, a father and son, designed the park that forms the basis of the current Keukenhof. They also designed the noted Vondelpark in Amsterdam. Opening Details Each year, thousands of visitors from all over the world come to marvel at the 32-hectare park’s sea of colours. Located one hour from Amsterdam and renowned for the millions of tulips, narcissi, hyacinths and other bulb flow-
ers, the park will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Entrance fee is 13 Euros (approximately $20) for adults and six Euros (approximately $9) for children. Keukenhof can be reached by train and bus, or by car. The famous annual flower parade from Noordwijk to Haarlem, the largest in Holland, will take place on Saturday, April 21. Air Transat, KLM and Martinair offer flights to Amsterdam from YVR. For more information on the Keukenhof Gardens, visit www.keukenhof.com.
Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Introduces One-Way Travel Awards he Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan has introduced one-way mileage awards for travel anywhere Alaska Airlines and sister carrier Horizon Air fly. The awards are the first of their kind offered by a major U.S. airline. The new awards allow customers to book one-way travel for half the mileage of round-trip awards. For example, one-way coach travel within Canada and the United States is available for 10,000 miles for Saver Awards and 20,000 miles for Peak Awards. When travelling round trip, customers also can combine different types of one-way tickets, including Saver and Peak Awards, coach- and first-class awards and purchased tickets.

“We are pleased to break new ground by offering our customers one-way awards,” said Rick Rasmussen, Alaska Airlines’ director of customer loyalty. “These new awards support our vision to make travel easier and to offer our customers more choices when using their miles.” Members of the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan can earn and redeem mileage on more than a dozen airlines, including more major U.S. airlines than any other frequent-flyer program. The program also offers opportunities to earn miles through an extensive network of partners, including Alaska Airlines credit and debit cards, mileage plan shopping, mileage plan dining, Safeway, and
more than 30 hotel and car-rental partners worldwide. The Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan is consistently honoured at the Freddie Awards, among the most prestigious consumer-generated awards in the travel industry. The program has been selected “Program of the Year” for three of the past four years and, in 2006, received the “Best Elite Level Program” and “Best Member Communications” awards. Alaska Airlines and its sister carrier, Horizon Air, together serve 89 cities through an expansive network throughout Alaska, the Lower 48, Canada and Mexico. The new one-way awards are available at alaskaair.com or by calling (800) ALASKAAIR
New Aviation Initiative At 2007 Goodwood Revival he nostalgic appeal of the world’s most authentic historic motor race meeting, the Goodwood Revival in England, is set to reach new heights for 2007 with an additional aeronautical attraction that recalls the style and excitement of flying as it used to be. For the 2007 Goodwood Revival, the ‘Freddie March Spirit of Aviation’ will be the first of an annual ‘concours d’elegance’ for historic aircraft, built up to 1966. Since the Earl of March reintroduced motor racing at the celebrated Goodwood Motor Circuit in 1998, aircraft have formed a key part of the Goodwood Revival activities. At the 2006 event, for example, no less than eight Supermarine Spitfires took to the air over Goodwood; the most seen in West Sussex skies since World War II. The origins of the Goodwood Motor Circuit are based around the perimeter road of former RAF Westhampnett, a key Battle of Britain airfield and the location of Sir

Douglas Bader’s final sortie. Freddie March, the present Earl of March’s grandfather, was a keen aviation engineer, as well as an accomplished racing driver and vehicle coachwork designer. The aim of the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation is to bring together some of the world’s finest, most elegant, original and rarely-seen airplanes from the evocative pioneering days of aviation, to create an added spectacle at the Revival that all racegoers will be able to get up close to and enjoy. Goodwood will pull together an expert panel of aviation historians and enthusiasts to hand pick around 30 important aircraft from around the world, with the ultimate winner gaining the ‘Freddie March Spirit of Aviation’ trophy at the prize-giving ceremony on September 2nd. To be eligible for this award, every airplane must be airworthy, and the expert judging panel will consider each air-
