Addition Of JAL To Oneworld Alliance Linked To ‘Visit Japan’ Campaign

he oneworld airline alliance will launch a series of major initiatives to promote tourism and business travel to Japan to mark the forthcoming addition of Japan Airlines (JAL) to the alliance’s membership. JAL will join oneworld on April 1, with five of its associated airlines as affiliates—JALways, Japan Asia Airways, JAL Express, J-AIR and Japan Transocean Air. The drive to encourage more international visitors to fly to Japan was unveiled at a ceremony to welcome JAL to oneworld, held in Tokyo

recently, and attended by the chief executives of all the alliance’s existing airlines and new joiners. The advertising and promotion initiatives come under the umbrella of a new one-year exclusive partnership between oneworld and the Visit Japan Campaign, led by Japan’s Ministry for Land, Infrastructure and Transportation. Through the use of this campaign, the Japanese Government aims to double the number of foreign tourists holidaying in the country—from around five million in 2003 to 10 million a year by 2010. “This expansion is the cornerstone of the Airport Authority’s $1-billion capital construction program, and essential to accommodating our growth as we prepare to serve a record 17.5-million passengers in 2007,” said Larry Berg, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “With these new facilities, YVR is poised to become the premier North American gateway to Asia.”

This commitment to growing Asia-Pacific traffic was illustrated at the event with the arrival of the first aircraft to use the new terminal facilities, Air Canada AC8, which arrived at Gate 65 on its regular route from Hong Kong. Building upon YVR’s distinctive design tradition, the $200million, 36,000-square-metre SEE EXPANSION,

to boost travel both to and from Japan. “On behalf of oneworld, we are delighted to be able to support the Visit Japan Campaign through these initiatives,” said JAL group chief executive Haruka Nishimatsu. “We hope that the alliance’s efforts will increase awareness and interest in Japan worldwide.” JAL also has unveiled a special oneworld livery that will be painted on two of its Boeing 777s to mark its accession to the alliance. One will fly on domestic routes and the other internationally.

arlier this month, Vancouver Airport Authority unveiled the new face of YVR, an updated visual identity reflecting Vancouver International Airport’s new facilities, unique West Coast style and growing reputation as a global gateway. “YVR has undergone a dramatic evolution in the past 15 years, developing into one of the world’s leading airports, and earning a reputation for exemplary customer service,” said Larry Berg, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority, who unveiled the new look at a community event. “As we prepare to expand our International Terminal and welcome more passengers, this new look reflects what makes our airport unique and how we are represented to the world, in 2007 and beyond.” The launch of YVR’s new visual identity was in preparation for the opening of the first phase of a $420million expansion to the International Terminal this month. Like the new terminal wing, which will feature four new gates and an aquarium showcasing indigenous marine life of the Pacific West Coast, the new logo provides an exciting, modern face for B.C.’s pre-

The introduction of the new logo also coincided with additional development projects in and around the airport, including the construction of the YVR portion of the Canada Line and the Link Building, a central passenger hub that will connect the International and Domestic terminals, slated for completion by summer 2007. With a growing number of passengers and changes within the airline industry, YVR continues to expand and adapt to meet the needs of the industry and its customers. To prepare for this update to its visual identity, the Airport Authority undertook a comprehensive review of YVR’s existing brand.
