Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner Surpasses 500 Customer Orders
ir Canada and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) have announced the appointment of Air Canada as the Official Airline of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The six-year partnership includes sponsorship rights and transportation for the Canadian Olympic teams participating at the Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games. “All of us at Air Canada are honoured to support the Olympic and Paralympic spirit,” said Montie Brewer, president and chief executive officer. “Our sponsorship also underlines Air Canada’s continuing support of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic

oeing has received its 500th customer order for its 787 Dreamliner with a follow-on-order from Japan Airlines (JAL). This increases JAL’s 787 order to 35 airplanes from their previous one of 30 in December 2004. “The 787 will be a key airplane on a variety of international and domestic routes,” said Kunio Shimizu, JAL’s vice president of engineering and quality assurance department for the Americas. “We are expecting the benefits of the 787 to provide efficiency and flexibility in our route planning, and are also looking forward to the wonderful flying experience the 787 will provide to our customers.” The JAL order for five 787-8 airplanes, in addition to several orders from unidentified customers, brings the 787’s order total to 514 airplanes from 43 customers since its launch on April 26, 2004, making it the fastestselling commercial airplane in history. “Surpassing the 500-order mark this early in the program, more than a year before the first airplane is delivered, shows that Boeing made the right choice in our point-to-point business strategy, and that the 787 team made the right choices in designing the airplane,” said Mike Bair, 787 vice president and general manager. The 787 will provide operators with a more efficient commercial jetliner. Using 20 per cent less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes, it is designed to produce lower emissions and quieter takeoffs and landings. Inside the airplane, passengers will find bigger windows, more stowage space and improved lighting.

Air Canada has developed its Vancouver hub to offer Canadians access to the world and international visitors easy access to Canada’s Olympic Games host city for 2010. “With Air Canada onboard, together we will stage Canada’s Games in 2010,” said John Furlong, VANOC chief executive

Through this exciting partnership, they will connect Canadians and the world to the Games and carry the Vancouver 2010 message broadly around the globe. As Canada’s airline, it is only fitting that Air Canada will carry our Canadian teams—and their dreams for podium success—to the next three Games in 2008, 2010 and 2012.” Air Canada’s Olympic commitment will include support to Canadian Paralympic athletes through an annual on-line fundraising initiative at aircanada.com. recognize the tremendous work and professionalism of our staff in helping provide a first rate product that thousands of travellers enjoyed over the past four years. I’m very proud of all our people. “I also want to thank Kirk Henderson, our interim president, for stepping into a challenging situation a few months ago and working with our employees, our customers and suppliers.” Over the past four years, Harmony’s destinations have included Honolulu, Maui, Las Vegas, New York, Palm Springs, San Francisco and Toronto. Harmony Airways passengers will find flight and ticket information at www.harmonyairways.com, or by calling the airline’s call centre at 1-866-8686789. Harmony Vacations customers will find information at www.harmonyvacations.com, or by contacting Harmony’s call centre. This is not a creditor protection arrangement and this is not company dissolution. “Our last scheduled flights to and from Toronto will be on March 30, and scheduled service to all other destinations will end April 9. We wanted to give our passengers as much advance notice as possible, and minimize the impact on their spring break and Easter travel plans.” Ho said increasing operating costs, overcapacity in the market and aggressive price competition from larger carriers prompted Harmony to end its scheduled service and look at other possible business models. Meanwhile, the airline, which began flying in November 2002, is giving lay-off notices to most of its 350 staff. “Harmony, as a company, will continue as we look at new opportunities and business models,” said Ho. “For more than four years, our entire team has worked hard to deliver a memorable travel experience from a locally owned and operated airline. PRESIDENT’S CORNER By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer
New Facilities For Our Regional Commuters ate C-38, the $17-million upgrade to our C-Pier regional commuter facilities, goes into full operation later this month. With more than 8.7-million domestic passengers in 2006, including approximately 40,000 regional commuter aircraft arrivals and departures, YVR’s C-Pier facilities are themselves a major airport. Gate C-38 is used primarily for commuter aircraft serving destinations within B.C., keeping the people and businesses of our province connected. C-38’s location also provides convenient transfers for passengers making domestic flight connections, and creates shorter walking distances for U.S. and other international connections. The waiting areas at the new gate offer a customer experience that goes beyond conventional facilities for passengers flying on short-haul regional flights. The 2,000-square-metre area has seating for 400 passengers and 115 square metres of future retail space. It will feature a play area with a television showcasing children’s programming, multiple additional television viewing areas, an Internet kiosk and wireless capability. Eight separate check-in positions will provide improved efficiency for commuter operations. The new gate is also unique in that its seating area is at apron level with floor-to-ceiling glass, offering passengers an excellent view of the airfield, including aircraft sightseeing from a ground-level perspective. As with all of YVR’s passenger facilities, the area provides barrier-free access for people with disabilities.
G
C-38 is only one of YVR’s numerous expansion projects—the new International Terminal wing, Link Building and Canada Line projects have been more visible to passengers throughout their construction— that will provide increased convenience and efficiency for travellers and our airline partners. Numerous baggage system enhancements were started in 2006 to provide more efficient passenger processing and improved customer service: the International Terminal’s baggage capacity will be increased by 50 per cent; new baggage carousels will be added in the international arrivals area; work began on a system that will allow international baggage to be transferred directly to the Domestic Terminal; new, more convenient drop points for baggage arriving on domestic flights will be added to allow airlines to deliver baggage to passengers faster; and development of a permanent high-speed hold-baggage screening system in the Domestic Terminal was launched and is slated for completion by December 2008. As well, a number of taxiway enhancements were completed in 2006, increasing taxiway efficiency and designed to handle new, larger aircraft. Our airport is in a constant state of evolution, keeping pace with industry change and growth and ensuring B.C.’s international gateway remains a world-class facility with the latest infrastructure, technology and passenger amenities. It’s the new face of YVR and we’re proud to show it to the world.

WestJet Announces Preferred Airline Partnership With Wal-Mart
estJet is now the preferred, Canadian airline for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer. The relationship with WalMart allows the airline to provide transportation and group services to all of the retailer’s business travellers. It also allows WestJet to secure additional revenue by being their preferred supplier and increasing market share within Wal-Mart’s domestic and transborder business. “As a low-cost carrier, WestJet offers outstanding value as it relates to price, customer service, schedule frequency and responding to our corporate requirements which, when grouped together, makes them a valuable business partner and logical choice for our company,” said Duane Futch, director, Global Travel Services for Wal-Mart. WestJet will leverage the relationship with Wal-Mart to appeal to a broad range of corporate business travellers— from local to international organizations that require a low-cost flight. “Over the past 11 years, our organization has grown into a leading, national airline carrier,” said Duncan
W
Bureau, WestJet’s vice-president of sales. “As we continue to expand our service reach, we become an attractive option for many national and multinational corporations. Wal-Mart is one
of the most highly regarded organizations of our time. We look forward to working with such an iconic institution and providing them with our exceptional guest experience and our own
WestJet welcome when they board.” WestJet offers scheduled service throughout its 35-city North American and Caribbean network.
Air Canada To Provide New Summer Service To California ir Canada is expanding its U.S. transborder network with the introduction of non-stop services from Vancouver to Sacramento, California on June 15. Flights will be operated using Air Canada Jazz 50seat, made-in-Canada Bombardier CRJ aircraft. “Air Canada is strategically expanding its transborder and domestic services, offering customers more destinations, more flights, more choice and more convenience when flying,” said Daniel Shurz, vice president, network planning. “ We expect these new services to be popular with both business and leisure travellers.” Air Canada is also increasing flights this summer on existing Vancouver routes to Los Angeles, San
A
Francisco, and Seattle. The airline will also increase service during the summer from Vancouver to Beijing, offering twice daily, non-stop flights starting July 1. The new Vancouver to Sacramento flights will depart Vancouver at 1:55 p.m. and 7:50 p.m., arriving in Sacramento at 3:52 p.m. and 9:47 p.m., respectively. Flights will depart Sacramento at 7:40 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., arriving in Vancouver at 9:40 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively. Flights have been timed to offer convenient connections in Vancouver to and from Air Canada’s extensive flights to Asia and destinations across Canada.
WestJet Launches ‘Cares for Kids’ Community Program
estJet has launched its first strategic program, WestJet Cares for Kids, to provide support for children’s health through community investment. Through the program, WestJet will give 1,800 flights to their Care for Kids partners this year. “We support kids and kids’ health through the gift of flight,” says Sean Durfy, president of WestJet. “WestJet’s culture is built on caring.
W
WestJet Cares for Kids is bigger than a corporate dedication to community investment; it’s about empowering WestJetters and making a difference in our communities.” WestJet Cares for Kids charities of choice are Hope Air, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, The Missing Children Society of Canada, CNIB, children’s hospitals and pediatric
wards across the country, and their newest community investment partner, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada. WestJet launched the program at their Calgary hangar last month, during which WestJetters and Make-AWish families wrote their wishes on paper planes and flew them simultaneously over an enlarged map of Canada to symbolize the new partnership.

Horizon Air Pilot Glides Smoothly From Ice To Air
In the days leading up to last year’s game, Sharples was reminded of how entwined his hockey and flying lives have become. “I was flying for Horizon on the day before the game, doing a couple Seattle-Victoria turns, and a couple of guys who were playing in the game were on my flights,” said Sharples. “We joked about the full door-to-door service.”
By Mike Rose
eff Sharples has spent his life skating between two avocations, one on the ice and the other in the air. He played hockey from 1983 to 2000—including three seasons in the National Hockey League—and now serves as a Q200 first officer for Horizon Air. In British Columbia, where Sharples grew up, hockey served as a rite of passage. “For every kid in Canada, hockey is what you grow up playing,” said Sharples. “Hockey was my first love.” But flying wasn’t far behind. Sharples’ father was a pilot who worked in the logging industry, flying into and out of logging camps and to remote villages. In addition, Sharples’ hometown, Terrace, B.C., was so far removed from the larger cities down south that any such outings were taken in his father’s aircraft. “Back then, it took forever to drive anywhere, so I spent a lot of time in the air with my dad,” said Sharples. “I learned to really love flying, and I wanted to be a pilot. But hockey came first.” While playing for the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winter Hawks in the mid-1980s, Sharples earned his pilot’s license. It was around that time that he first learned of Horizon, when he was travelling to Portland, Oregon one Christmas. “At the time, I thought maybe I would enjoy flying for a living once I finished playing [hockey], but I never thought I actually would do it. A lot of guys who play hockey don’t really think about their life after hockey until they’re actually there.” Sharples made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings—one of the league’s most storied franchises— during the 1987 season. In his 105game NHL career, the defenseman recorded 14 goals and 35 assists. “I felt so privileged to be a part of the Red Wings organization during those seasons and during my time in the minors,” said Sharples. “They’re
J
considered the class of the NHL for the way they treat their players, and they definitely live up to that reputation.” Sharples’ final season in Detroit was 1989, but he played another 11 seasons in a handful of minor leagues around the country before retiring in 2000, after a season with the Utah Grizzlies of the International Hockey League. “A buddy that I had played hockey with was flying turboprops for a tour company at the Grand Canyon, and he offered me a job,” said Sharples. “I figured it was as good a time as any to get a career as a pilot going and fulfill another dream. I was lucky enough to only need to complete a few more ratings before I could start.” After several years at that job, Sharples began to look to the Northwest, since much of his family lives in Kelowna and Vancouver. Sharples joined Horizon in 2004 as a Seattle-based first officer, which is not to say that hockey is out of the picture. “There are a lot of people at Horizon with hockey backgrounds, so we seem to always have something to talk about.” And when he’s not flying, Sharples serves as a coach for the Las Vegas Wranglers of the East Coast Hockey League. To accomplish this, he lives in Las Vegas and commutes from there for his Horizon job. Sharples also periodically plays in NHL alumni games, such as the annual Red Wings alumni game held in Las Vegas.

Israel, the Dead Sea is a site of immeasurable cultural and religious significance, having hosted historic figures such as King David, Herod the Great and Jesus Christ in its therapeutic waters. Now a major tourist attraction, the saltiest body of water on the planet welcomes millions of tourists every year who come to float in its unusually buoyant waters. Whether it’s a balneotherapy session, which uses the black mineral mud of the sea, or the reduced ultraviolet rays at the lowest dry point on earth, the
is estimated that one-half of the wall has completed disappeared, with a large percentage of the remaining wall rapidly deteriorating. Glacier National Park The retreating glaciers of the last ice age carved this ancient ecosystem, which is dominated by cragged mountain ranges that reach into the North American sky. The offspring, remnants of these Earth-shaping ice giants, have remained the centrepiece of Montana’s national treasure for 15,000 years. Dead Sea area has become a major centre for health research and treatment. Unfortunately, due to irrigation and human intervention, the Dead Sea is shrinking at an unprecedented rate and, according to experts, will completely evaporate in approximately 50 years. Great Barrier Reef Sometimes referred to as the tropical rain forest of the sea, the largest organic collective in the world resides along 2,575 kilometres of coastline off of Queensland, Australia. In addition to having the distinction of being one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is home to one of the most diverse collections of wildlife on the planet, many of which are endangered. Leatherback sea turtles share this ocean playground with humpback whales, clownfish and thousands of other distinct and beautiful sea creatures. This essential component of the Earth’s ecosystem is in danger of ending its 500,000-year existence. Reef scientists agree that global warming, which results in coral bleaching, is the greatest threat to the reef, predicting that a three-degree rise in the global temperature would result in the total destruction of the 300,000square-kilometre refuge of biodiversity. Great Wall of China China’s most famous landmark, and generally considered the longest man-made structure on Earth, spans all varieties of the Chinese landscape, twisting through the stark Gobi desert and rugged mountain ranges to the fertile grasslands and high plateaus. Construction began more than 200 years before the birth of Christ and was completed in the 17th century. It
dating back to the mid-19th century provides evidence that the 150 glaciers scattered throughout the park have rapidly retreated, and in 2005 only 27 of the original glaciers remained. If global warming continues at the current rate, scientists agree that by 2030 there will be no glaciers left in Glacier National Park. Not a welcome prognosis for the many plant and animal species that depend on the seasonal melting of glacier ice for survival, or for the millions who make the trek each year to experience a world frozen in time. Venice Nicknamed the “Queen of the Adriatic,” the city of Venice is rich in both history and culture. Its famous canals and celebrated glassblowers attract more than seven million people each year to view this window into the past. However, Venice is sinking. Between its dissolving foundation and the rising sea level, the Italian government faces a daunting challenge in the coming century to keep one of the most romantic and beloved cities in Europe from becoming an underwater attraction. Amazon Rain Forest The ‘lungs’ of our planet pump approximately 20 per cent of the world’s oxygen into the atmosphere. Covering more than half of Brazil, the Amazon represents half of the remaining rainforest in the world, and is home to the most diverse and abundant collection of plant and animal life on the planet. At the current rate of deforestation, in 20 years the Amazon will be reduced by 40 per cent and, according to some experts, global warming could lead to the complete annihilation of the Amazon rainforest by 2100.

Protecting Your Assets From Fraud And Theft
ver the years, many scams have evolved to rob individuals of both money and property. With the growing use of online shopping and banking, it has become increasingly popular for hackers and other computer-savvy crooks to find ways to gain access an individual’s financial information and perpetrate scams that are even more sophisticated. Following are some of the more common schemes. Fraud Against Seniors Elderly people have long been the targets of con artists because they often live alone and/or on a fixed income. One popular scam involves a phone call announcing a lottery win. The catch: you must pay an “administration” fee to collect the winnings. Before hanging up, ask them to send the cheque first. Promissory Notes These are often sold by independent insurance agents and are debt instruments that promise super-high returns, as much as 15 per cent per month. A debt instrument is essentially a loan made by an investor to a company in return for interest and principal repayment at a future date. However, investors in these debt instruments may never get their principal returned since the borrower may never be able to repay these highinterest loans.
O
Affinity Fraud Scam artists who target church members or individuals who belong to an ethnic organization. Even if you know someone well and trust them, you should still perform due diligence, or research, before investing in any moneymaking ventures that they recommend. Viatical Settlements A viatical arrangement occurs when a person who is dying sells their life insurance policy to an investor. The sick person gets to have part of their insurance up front while they are still living and the investor cashes in the policy when the insured dies. However, the arrangement is fraudulent when the dying patient named on the policy either doesn’t exist or isn’t terminally ill.
Prime Bank Schemes In this scheme, con artists convince their victims to invest money in an offshore bank. The problem is the bank usually doesn’t exist and the money is never seen again.
Internet Fraud Never give your banking or credit card information out in reply to an email even if it appears to have come from your bank. Why would they need your credit card number, bank

account number, password, or pin number? If you bank online, check your bank and credit card accounts regularly to ensure all the transactions originated with you. Use a password with symbols and digits and change it regularly.
Private Investment Funds It really is best to stay “mainstream” by dealing with well-known investment companies. When investing in a fund always make the cheque payable to the fund company and not to an individual. This will prevent your money being stolen by a “rogue” advisor. individual’s name, there has been a huge growth in the area of identity theft. To minimize risk in this regard, adopt some of the following safeguards: • Shred all papers that have your name, address, banking, or credit information. • Never give out information over the phone unless you initiated the call. • Never give out passwords or pin numbers. Banks and credit card companies do not need to know them. • Call any company that stops sending you regular statements. • Don’t give out credit card information over the phone to telephone solicitors or charities. Ask them to send the paperwork so you can mail them a cheque.

Federal Government Funds New Airport Safety Projects
irports across Canada will receive close to $33-million for 28 new projects to enhance their safety. The funding, announced by Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, will take place under the Government of Canada’s 2007-08 Airports Capital Assistance Program. “The safety and security of the travelling public is a top priority for Canada’s New Government,” said Minister Cannon. “These projects will improve airport safety and protect Canadians. They will also boost the economic potential of the airports and surrounding communities.” The Airports Capital Assistance Program finances capital projects related to safety, asset protection and

operating cost reduction. Eligible airports must have year-round, regularly scheduled passenger service, they must meet Transport Canada airport certification requirements and they cannot be owned or operated by the Government of Canada. Since its creation, the program has distributed more than $400-million for 509 projects at 159 airports. Most of these were airside safety-related projects such as the rehabilitation of runways, taxiways, visual aids and heavy airside mobile equipment. For 2007-2008, B.C. airports that will receive allocations from the Capital Assistance Program for projects are Abbotsford, Fort St. John, Nanaimo, Prince Rupert, Smithers and Williams Lake.

WestJet Caps Record First Quarter With Highest March Load Factor
estJet has reported a March load factor of 85.2 per cent—a record high for the month. Results for March include an 18 per cent increase in available seat miles over March 2006, demonstrating the airline’s continued ability to add capacity and stimulate demand. The airline’s year-to-date load factor of 81.1 per cent marks a record first quarter, a significant achievement in a quarter where capacity increased 19% per cent. “These results clearly establish WestJet as a national airline of choice,” said WestJet’s president, Sean Durfy. “The past three months of record load factor indicate guests are choosing WestJet and that we are well positioned to successfully continue adding aircraft to our fleet. We have an additional five deliveries for new 737s confirmed before year-end, bringing our 2007 total to seven new aircraft.” With the announcement by

ir Canada has introduced a new generation of aircraft into its fleet with the arrival of its first Boeing 777 in Montréal earlier this month. Accompanied by Air Canada’s 70year-old Lockheed L-10A heritage aircraft, the highly efficient, customer-friendly 777 aircraft touched down at Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport, following a five-hour maiden flight from its Seattle manufacturer. The aircraft is the first of eight wide-bodied 777 aircraft being delivered to Air Canada in 2007. Air Canada’s fleet of 777 aircraft will operate on key long-haul routes to Europe, Asia and the South Pacific. Service from Vancouver on the new aircraft will begin in July on a Vancouver-Tokyo route, and on a Vancouver-Sydney route launching in December. “With the arrival of the Boeing

and privacy of first class lie-flat beds, at a business class price. The introduction of 777 service raises the bar in comfort and convenience in air travel, while leveraging Air Canada’s extensive international and North America route networks via our Toronto and Vancouver hubs.”
