EVA Air Expands Vancouver-Taipei Service

aiwanese-based EVA Air is expanding its service from Vancouver to Taipei and adding two extra flights from June 23 to August 27, 2007. The additional flights will be operated on Sunday and Tuesday, using 777-300ER aircraft. Currently EVA Air operates three flights per week from Vancouver arriving in Taipei at 5:10 a.m. local time with good

connections to all south East Asia destinations. An affiliate of shipping conglomerate Evergreen Group, EVAAir is the largest privately owned Taiwanese airline. Established in 1989, EVA Air became the launch customer for the Boeing 777-200LR in 2000. At the same time, the airline ordered four Boeing 777-300ERs, the first of which entered service as EVAAir’s new flagship aircraft in July 2005.

B.C.’s Airport Ready For Takeoff n May 8, Vancouver Airport Authority opened Gate C38, YVR’s new $17-million regional commuter facility serving 30-plus destinations throughout B.C. With room to accommodate up to eight aircraft at once, plus 2,000 square metres of comfortable waiting areas for passengers, Gate C-38 will help YVR remain a regional as well as international gateway. This project is also an important component of the $1.4-billion construction program currently underway at YVR. Passengers travelling to one of 33 BC destinations served by YVR will find that C-38 offers: • Comfortable seating for 400 • Multiple TV viewing areas • Children’s play area • Internet kiosks and full wireless capability throughout • Floor-to-ceiling glass windows in the seating area offering a great, ground-level perspective of the airfield • Close proximity to other gates for connecting passengers • 115 square metres of future retail, food and beverage space • Barrier-free access for passengers with disabilities.

With YVR’s domestic traffic expected to surpass the 8.7-million passenger mark this year, the opening of C-38 couldn’t come at a better time. While some regional flights will continue to use existing gates in the B Pier and the South Terminal, the new wing will be used primarily by Air Canada Jazz, which operates approximately 55 per cent of all regional flights out of YVR. For a complete list of destinations served by YVR, visit the flight information section at www.yvr.ca.

Premium Pay-Per-Use Lounge Opens In Domestic Terminal omestic passengers travelling out of YVR can now enjoy a first-class lounge experience at YVR’s new Plaza Premium Lounge, located post-security at the junction between A and B piers in the Domestic Terminal. Open to all domestic passengers, regardless of airline, travel class or membership programs, the Plaza Premium Lounge offers spectacular runway views, comfortable seating, refreshments and business services for a $25 entrance fee. Owned and operated by Plaza Premium Lounge Management Limited, the concept comes to YVR from Asia, where it is popular with business travellers and vacationers alike at airports in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. YVR was a natural fit for the pay-per-use lounge model, given the airport’s position as the premier North American gateway to Asia. “For several years, our international travellers have been enjoying the existing Plaza Premium Lounge in the International Terminal, and we’re pleased to now extend this premium lounge experience to our domestic trav-

Since its founding, EVA Air has expanded to include air cargo, airline catering, ground handling, aviation engineering and tour package services. Earlier this month, EVA Air completed its first B747-400 freighter conversion—the first of a series of B747-400s to be converted over the next two years.

supports the organization’s education and outreach efforts. “Many of Delta’s customers and employees worldwide are passionate about and committed to social responsibility with environmental stewardship as an important area where they can make a difference,” said Jim Whitehurst, Delta’s chief operating officer. “In support of that, we are pleased to become the first and only U.S. carrier to offer a program that allows customers to help promote positive global environmental change through carbon offsets.” The newly planted forests will help to absorb carbon dioxide, filter water, restore wildlife habitat and enhance public recreation areas. As the program grows, Delta will invite its employees and customers to participate in ceremonial tree plantings in select cities worldwide. “We applaud Delta’s leadership for its commitment to help offset the carbon footprint of its travellers on Earth Day, said Conservation Fund president Larry Selzer. “Climate

change has emerged as one of the dominant environmental issues of our time, and Delta’s industry-leading efforts to address this challenge, and its invitation to its customers to join in this initiative, serve as a model for corporate environmental stewardship in the 21st century.” Delta’s new program is just one of the airline’s efforts to affect positive environmental change. Some of the airline’s ongoing programs include: • Fuel conservation/recycling initiatives, such as weight reduction efforts, engine washes and refurbishment, the institution of continuous descent approaches and single engine taxis, which saved more than 94-million litres of fuel in 2006; • A system to reduce water consumption by 50 per cent at the airline’s Technical Operations Centre; • The incorporation of more than 600 electric vehicles and other types of electric ground support equipment into the airline’s fleet; and, • Promoting a next generation Air Traffic Control system that affords more direct aircraft routing and reduces carbon emissions associated with air travel. Delta’s partnership with The Conservation Fund is the latest addition to Delta’s Force for Global Good—a program that unites Delta employees and customers in support of philanthropic and socially responsible efforts throughout the world. The program leverages Delta’s global network of employees who volunteer, as well as assets of Delta’s charitable foundation, The Delta Foundation, to support the communities where Delta customers and employees live and work worldwide. The Conservation Fund is Delta’s Force for Global Good’s newest partner. Delta launched the campaign last December in partnership with Habitat for Humanity International with the airline’s first international build in the township of Katlehong in Johannesburg, South Africa. Last month, Delta employees took part in a two-day build in Brooklyn, New York. Delta’s Force for Global Good is planning additional builds in Ghana and India later this year.

Airport Employees Join Annual FOD Walk

arlier this month, airport employees joined the annual airport FOD walk, which helps to keep the airport’s runway and taxiway system in tip-top shape. FOD stands for Foreign Object Debris, and participants walk the runways, taxiways and aprons in search of it. FOD includes any loose objects or debris, such as a plastic bag or suitcase wheel, which if undetected, could be ingested into an aircraft engine and cause serious damage. FOD costs the global aviation industry $4-billion in damage each year. The annual FOD Walk is just one part of the Airport Authority’s comprehensive program to increase awareness among its employees about the importance of keeping YVR FOD-free.

TRAVEL TALK

Norwegian Sun, one of many cruise ships sailing to Alaska from Vancouver. ancouver is home to the world’s third most popular cruise vacation. Between May and September, the world’s leading cruise ship operators sail from Vancouver through B.C.’s breathtaking Inside Passage to experience the spectacular glaciers and colourful history of Alaska. Through a number of innovative programs and great customer service, YVR strives to encourage cruise ship passengers to sail out of Vancouver’s port. Here are some fast facts about YVR’s role in Vancouver’s cruise ship industry: • This year, Vancouver will welcome 33 ships and 273 calls at the Port of Vancouver’s two terminals. • Vancouver expects to see 930,000 cruise revenue passengers this year, up 11 per cent over last year’s count of approximately 838,000. • London-based travel publisher Berlitz has recognized Vancouver as the most passenger-friendly cruise port in North America. • More than 70 per cent of Alaska cruise ship passengers are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. • Eighty per cent of total cruisers will arrive and depart through YVR en route to their cruises. Of that percentage, 92 per cent fly to and from the U.S. • According to a 2006 Vancouver Cruise Passenger Study, passengers rated their Vancouver cruise experience 4.5 out of 5.0, citing security processing and customs procedures as a key part of the experience.

V

• Vancouver International Airport’s U.S. Direct program enables pre-clearance of cruisers by expediting them through the airport’s cruise arrivals transfer facility directly to the port where they go through customs and security. • Departing passengers can also take advantage of the Onboard Check-in program, in which eligible passengers check in on the ship and their luggage is transferred directly to the aircraft so they don’t have to handle it until their final destination. • 25-plus summer students and extra customer service representatives have joined the team this summer to field questions, offer directions and help cruisers and other passengers navigate the terminal facilities. Sporting cheerful red vests, they are easily spotted in and amongst the summer crowds. • In 2007, Fridays and Saturdays are expected to be the busiest days at YVR for cruise passengers. • The restrictions on taking liquids and gels through security remain in effect and do apply to cruise passengers using the US Direct program and on-board check-in. • Cruise ship information counters, foreign exchange and banking services, a tourism InfoCentre and ground transportation services are all available to passengers in the International Terminal lobby. For more detailed arrivals and departures information, please visit the Getting Around section on the YVR website at www.yvr.ca.

Wildlife Management Team Keeps 24-Hour Safe Watch at YVR

t YVR, safety is a top priority. One of the challenges faced is protecting aircraft during take-offs and landings from birds in flight. To ensure safe airport operations, YVR operates one of the best wildlife management programs in the world. Managing wildlife at YVR is especially important because of the airport’s location along a major Pacific Flyway, through which millions of birds migrate each year. YVR is situ-

A

ated near prime waterfowl habitats on the sturgeon banks foreshore. With a large, mixed bird population close by, the potential for strikes is heightened if birds are not managed effectively. In very rare circumstances, strikes can cause millions of dollars in damage to aircraft or worse. To ensure YVR’s airspace remains safe at all times, a minimum of two wildlife officers patrol the airport’s 1,300-hectare grounds 24-hours a day,

365 days a year. Their work includes managing habitats, monitoring bird and wildlife species, and moving birds away from airport grounds using harassment techniques such as pyrotechnics, sirens, lights, propane cannons, and YVR’s specially trained Border Collies, Chaser and Traveller. Habitat management and harassment techniques are the primary tools, but when a wildlife officer perceives a safety risk—to an approaching aircraft, for instance—killing will be used as a last resort. Habitat management includes modifying airport property to reduce its attractiveness to wildlife species. The airport’s wildlife officers and operations and maintenance teams manage grass, weeds and other vegetation; water drainage; nesting and perching spots; garbage accumulation; and building design. ness aviation, air ambulance and charter airline based in Ontario. Skyservice will provide fully licensed and experienced medical personnel with adult, paediatric and critical care experience. “Helijet’s strong presence in Western Canada and high operating standards will be a tremendous asset as we apply an already established East Coast business model into this new market,” said Sam Cimone, Skyservice’s director of air ambulance services. Helijet will provide all air operations for the air ambulance, including aircrew and maintenance personnel on demand 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new Learjet air ambulance will be the carrier’s sixth medically equipped aircraft. It will be used to operate dedicated air medical flights across Western Canada and abroad from Helijet’s base at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Earlier this year, Helijet was awarded a three year air medical contract from the BC Ambulance Service and is currently providing air ambulance services across British Columbia with an existing Learjet 31A. “We’re pleased with this business relationship as it’s another rewarding step for Helijet’s growing air medical operations,” said Danny Sitnam, CEO Helijet. “Partnering with Skyservice is going to strengthen our infrastructure and provide even better air medical service for our clients.”

Delta Airlines YVR’s North Runway Keeps Emerges From People and Planes Moving Chapter 11 Bankruptcy M

ast month, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York issued a ruling confirming Delta’s Plan of Reorganization, clearing the way for the airline’s emergence from Chapter 11. The reorganization plan became effective on April 30, after closing conditions were met and the company’s US$2.5-billion in exit financing closed. “This is an exciting day for everyone at Delta,” said Gerald Grinstein, Delta’s chief executive officer. “Achieving a turnaround of this magnitude in little more than 19 months would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Delta people worldwide, and the leadership, the vision and the flawless execution

of our plan by our outstanding management team led by Ed Bastian and Jim Whitehurst. We are also grateful to all the other people who have helped make this possible for Delta, including the unwavering support of our customers and the communities we serve.” Earlier in the month, Delta creditors overwhelmingly supported the reorganization plan. “Delta is now poised to enter the next chapter of our history as a strong airline ready to compete in an everchanging industry,” said Grinstein. While under bankruptcy protection, Delta underwent a major facelift with other changes on the way for the No. 3 carrier in the U.S. According to the airline’s bankruptcy lawyer, Marshall Huebner, the airline has set aside US$10-million for a rebranding effort. Delta offers flights to 456 worldwide destinations in 100 countries. Customers can check in for flights, print boarding passes and check flight status at delta.com.

ore and more people are travelling by air each year—in fact, YVR is expecting a record 17.5million passengers in 2007. Increased passenger traffic, especially during the busy May-through-October period, means more aircraft are using the airport’s runway system during peak daytime hours. To ease congestion and reduce delays, YVR’s north runway is used for take-offs during these peak travel periods. And with passenger traffic on the rise, the Airport Authority expects to use the north runway more than in previous years to keep people and planes moving. Some of YVR’s neighbours may

notice a change in operations with departures off the north runway. With this redistribution of operations, some people may notice more noise, while others may notice less. The Airport Authority works closely with its neighbours and business partners to monitor and assess the use of the north runway throughout the busy travel period. Quick Facts: • The north runway is closed nightly, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.— except in the event of emergency or maintenance. • While the runway is used primarily for arrivals, it is authorized for use for departures as

needed to reduce delays. • The north runway is 3,030 metres long and 60 metres wide. • Planning for the north runway began as early as 1946. It has been used for take-offs during busy peak periods since 2001. • The Airport Authority has a comprehensive noise management program that strives to balance the community’s desire for safe, convenient, 24-hour air travel with enjoyable urban living. For more information, please visit North Runway Departures in the Latest Information section on the airport’s website home page at www.yvr.ca.

Flyglobespan Arrives In Canada Flyglobespan 767, heading out from Glasgow International Airport, Scotland. arlier this month, Vancouver and Calgary airports saw the arrival of the first flyglobespan flights into Western Canada.

Flyglobespan has become one of the largest low-fare airlines in the U.K. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland flyglobespan was named Airline of

Oasis Hong Kong Airlines Announces New Vancouver-Hong Kong Service arlier this month, Oasis Hong Kong Airlines announced the launch of a Vancouver-Hong Kong route, starting June 28, 2007. Established in February 2005, Oasis Hong Kong Airlines is a lowcost carrier based in Hong Kong. A Pastor, Rev. Raymond C. Lee and his wife, Priscilla, founded the airline. The airline’s chief executive, Steve Miller, was founder and first chief executive of another Hong Kong-based airline, Dragonair. “The demand for air travel between Hong Kong and Canada is extraordinarily strong, especially from Vancouver,” said Rev. Dr. Raymond C. Lee, chairman, Oasis. “Many people who cannot afford to

E

travel on non-stop services fly between these two great cities on carriers that have stopovers en route.” Celebrating the launch, Oasis gave away 1,000 one-way economy class trips to Hong Kong over a twoday period. The airline is also offering a “Buy One Get One Free” promotion for business class passengers who travel between June 28 and October 27, 2007. Prices for the “Buy One Get One Free” promotion start at $3,798 round trip. The additional free ticket offered in this promotion may be used by the purchaser at a later date, or transferred to a person of their choice. This promotional

offer expires on May 31, 2007. Oasis’ regular low fares in economyOasis start at $299 and in businessOasis at $1,399, one way. “We are very excited to bring affordable fares, non-stop flights and all the service levels you’d expect from a top Asian carrier to the people of Vancouver,” said Priscilla Lee, executive director, Oasis. “People can now travel to Hong Kong more frequently, with their families or even realise their dreams and visit Asia’s most exciting city for the first time.” Customers can book on the Oasis website (www.oasishongkong.com), through their travel agent, or by calling toll-free at 1-888-983-0808.

Europe, North America, The Caribbean and Africa. Flyglobespan has announced an extensive flight schedule from Vancouver and Calgary to England and Scotland for Summer 2007. Beginning immediately, flyglobespan will be flying to three destinations in the United Kingdom: London Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. Sandy Moreland, flyglobespan’s regional manager based in Vancouver, highlighted the benefits of flying into Britain’s regional airports, as opposed to London Heathrow. “It is the trend in Europe to use regional airports,” said Moreland. “It helps keep costs down and it’s quick and easy for travellers to arrive closer to their actual destination. This builds on flyglobespan’s successful strategy in Europe of utilizing smaller, less expensive, but highly accessible regional airports.” Flyglobespan was established in November 2002 as an offshoot of the Globespan Group. Operations started in April 2003 using two Boeing 737-300 aircraft on services from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports to five destina-

tions in Spain, France and Italy. By March 2005, the airline had grown to offer 15 destinations across Europe, using a fleet of nine aircraft, of which three were bought new, and had tripled its passenger numbers to 1.5 million annually. “Flyglobespan may be new to Canada, but we’re well-known in the U.K. and Europe,” said Moreland. “We fly to more than 20 European destinations and have now added new destinations in the U.S. and South Africa. Once Canadians arrive in the U.K., they have the potential to explore not just the U.K., but also to make use of our European network. In fact, London Stansted is the home of the $10 ticket to Europe.” Vancouver and Calgary will be served by wide-bodied Boeing 767s providing for generous seat pitch, up to three classes of service and preselection of in-flight meals from a range of online menus. Combine all this with its low-cost – from $99 one way, plus taxes, is the currently advertised lead price—and flyglobespan clearly believe that they have a winning formula for Canada.

Air Canada Increases Order For Wide-Body Aircraft

Air Canada received its first Boeing 777 on March 30, 2007. ir Canada has exercised options and purchase rights for 23 Boeing 787 aircraft, bringing its total firm orders for the aircraft to 37 from the 14 originally announced, with deliveries starting in 2010. Air Canada thus becomes the largest North American customer for the Dreamliner, the world’s most advanced aircraft.

A

“As we take delivery of new, fuel efficient aircraft, we are removing older aircraft from the fleet to create one of the youngest, most efficient, customer-friendly fleets in the world,” said Montie Brewer, president and chief executive officer. “The Boeing 787 aircraft features better operational performance in terms of speed and flight range, providing us

with the ability to serve new markets that could not be previously served in an efficient manner. With new Boeing and Embraer aircraft entering the fleet, we will continue with our overall strategy of matching capacity with demand, which has produced more than three consecutive years of record breaking load factors.” The revised agreement includes

Federal Government Urges Permanent Residents To Renew Vital Travel Document n July 2007, five-year Canadian permanent resident (PR) cards will begin expiring. The cards are a vital document for Canadian permanent residents who travel internationally because they are necessary to re-enter Canada. The Federal Government is advising Canadian permanent residents to check the expiry date on their card if they plan to travel outside Canada after July 1, and to apply for a new card before it is too late. Citizenship and Immigration Canada is launching a comprehensive web, media and poster campaign to remind Canadian permanent residents that they must have a valid PR card to return to the country if travelling internationally. “We want to help Canadian permanent residents who are planning to travel outside the country,” said Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. “That’s why we are taking the initiative through this campaign to help inform Canadian permanent residents of the need to renew their cards before travelling outside Canada.” The PR card confirms the holder’s permanent resident status in Canada. Permanent residents who travel outside Canada must show the card before boarding commercial transportation (plane, train, boat or bus) when returning to Canada. Without a valid PR card, permanent residents will not be allowed to board, and will need to make alternative travel arrangements at their own expense and inconvenience. Permanent residents who have obtained Canadian citizenship no longer need a PR card. “We’re encouraging people to plan ahead,” said Minister Finley. “Permanent residents should check

I

the expiry date on their cards and apply for a new one well before they travel.” The PR card was introduced on June 28, 2002, for new immigrants to Canada with the implementation of the Immigration and Refugee

Protection Act. The cards are valid for a five-year period. In exceptional circumstances, some cards expire after one year. Permanent residents can obtain a new card by completing an application kit available online at

options for 23 Boeing 787 aircraft for a total of up to 60 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. At the same time, Air Canada has reduced its original Boeing 777 order by two aircraft, which were due to be delivered in 2009. The carrier is scheduled to take delivery of 16 Boeing 777s, in addition to one leased from International Lease Finance

Corporation, by the end of 2008. Air Canada’s major fleet renewal program will see the carrier’s existing Airbus A340 and A330 and Boeing 767-300 and 767-200 aircraft replaced by modern, fuel efficient and more customer-friendly aircraft. The revised order will allow Air Canada to replace substantially all of the carrier’s B767 leased aircraft when the aircrafts operating leases expire. The carrier estimates fuel usage and maintenance costs for a Boeing 787 aircraft to be approximately 30 per cent less than that of a Boeing 767-300.
