YVR Named Best Airport In North America E
very year, Skytrax, a United Kingdom-based consultancy, conducts research for commercial airlines. It carries out international traveller surveys to find the best cabin staff, airport, airline, airline lounge, in-flight entertainment, on board catering and several other elements of air travel. The organization is best known for their annual World Airport Awards and World Airline Awards. This year’s survey of airports was based on more than 7.8-million detailed passenger surveys, covering more than 170 airports, and conducted over an 11-month period throughout the world. Vancouver was named Best Airport North America, in 8th place worldwide, and was the only North American airport to feature in the top-10 world airport rankings. “We congratulate the award-winning airports, whose standards of customer service have received a very clear vote of passenger confidence and satisfaction,” said Edward Plaisted, Skytrax CEO. Top of passenger priorities in this survey were general ease of airport
usage and waiting times. “Travellers expect security processing to incur some delays, but are disappointed— often annoyed—if the security facilities are inadequate,” said Plaisted. “Waiting in line for 30 minutes to find only half the available security scanners open was a frequently stated complaint.” Final passenger judging covered more than 40 categories of product and service quality—items such as terminal cleanliness, staff efficiency and courtesy, terminal signage and walking distances, as well as features like shopping, dining options, internet services. Canada Reaches CATSA To Travellers: Blue Sky Agreement Leave Liquids, Gels And With New Zealand Aerosols Behind
T
he Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is renewing an appeal to air travellers one year after Canada adopted restrictions on liquids, gels and aerosols. According to CATSA officials, in spite of the year-old regulations, numerous air travellers continue to arrive at the pre-board screening checkpoint with over-sized quantities of bottled water, perfume, shampoo, hair gel and other toiletries. “It takes just a minute quantity of liquid explosives to destroy an aircraft and disrupt the aviation system,” said Jacques Duchesneau, CATSA president and chief executive officer. “We urge travellers to be vigilant and make a conscious effort to ensure that threats are kept off passenger planes.” Across the country, screening officers intercept more than 850,000 liquids, gels and aerosols every week. The staggering amount translates into delays at the security-screening checkpoint, as passengers have to unpack and dispose of the items. Regulations For carry-on items, liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 millitres. These containers must be placed in a clear, re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of no more than one litre. One bag per passenger is permitted. For more information about the regulations and other packing tips, please visit www.catsa.gc.ca or call CATSA at 1-888-294-2202.

waiting times were also a constituent factor of the survey. “While business travellers’ look for speed and maximum time utilization in the airport, it is leisure passengers that tend to make more use of, and enjoy an airport’s facilities,” said Plaisted. “These are the people who notice how clean the washrooms are, how much seating is available, what prices are charged at food and beverage outlets, and how helpful the airport staff are.” Airline Survey “The 2006/7 World Airline Survey was our longest running and largest passenger survey ever,” said Plaisted. “We received more than 14-million eligible nominations around the world dur-
ing the 11-month survey, further underlining the project’s title of being the World’s Largest Passenger Survey.” For the second time in the history of the World Airline Awards, Singapore Airlines emerged as overall winner. In addition to the overall title, the airline also was named Best Business Class. In the survey’s regional results, Air Canada was named Best Airline North America. “As with the majority of the survey studies we conduct, the World Airline Survey is primarily focused on the quality attributes that different airlines offer—be it in the airport or the onboard environment,” said Plaisted. “Of course, in making a nomination for a Best Airline based on the standards of product and service, the survey participants will pay due regard to the value-for-money equation, but we do not set out to evaluate which airlines might have the largest network or most frequent schedules. It is all about quality, and how the customer rates one airline against another.”

PRESIDENT’S CORNER By LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer
New BCIT Campus Spreads Its Wings At YVR
F
all has arrived and that means back-to-school time. This fall has a special significance for YVR because it will see the opening of British Columbia Institute of Technology’s (BCIT) new Aerospace Technology Campus on Sea Island. The new, 28,300-squaremetre, $70-million facility is Western Canada’s premier aerospace centre. It features a 3,700-square-metre, glass Honeywell Aerospace Education Hangar that can accommodate up to 20 training aircraft, including a new Boeing 737. The Airport Authority knows that education is an important investment in the future and we have supported the construction of the new campus through participation on its Aerospace and Technology Campus Cabinet, donations, and agreements on lands and leases. BCIT has long been a partner to aviation in B.C., providing support to the aerospace industry in resolving problems and developing new technologies. Employers throughout Western Canada rely on BCIT for skilled graduates, and the school has earned a reputation as Canada’s premier polytechnic. In 1977, BCIT established its first campus at YVR. Like YVR, the school has demonstrated its commitment to remaining on the leading edge. The new campus will build on this reputation; it features new technologies and simulators, and will provide global access for collaboration with industry partners, such as YVR, in the development of applied research. The building features unique architecture with a series of distinctive, interconnected geometric forms
that create a natural flow of students and faculty through the many classrooms, workshops, common areas and the impressive new hangar. The massive doors of the hangar are designed such that they can be manually opened and closed by a single person. Preparations for the building’s opening began in July, when the Airport Authority worked with BCIT to coordinate the relocation of 12 aircraft from the school’s existing Aerospace Technology Campus on the south side of YVR. The aircraft were towed through parts of the South Terminal, across Russ Baker Way and into the Honeywell Aerospace Education Hangar. We’re pleased to support BCIT’s new Sea Island home because we recognize the school’s important role in providing advanced skills training in the areas of aircraft maintenance engineering, and airport and flight operations. Already the largest aerospace training school in Canada, the new facility increases BCIT’s capacity to 1,000 students from 320 at the previous campus. The expanded BCIT facilities reflect the increasing demand for air travel and our industry’s growth, which relies on the skilled employees who provide the technical and operational expertise that makes YVR’s some 750 daily take-offs and landings possible. In addition to celebrating the opening of the new campus, BCIT is marking 50 years of aerospace training, having furnished the industry with more than 5,000 job-ready graduates over the decades. Congratulations, BCIT, from all of your friends at YVR.

British Airways Offers Business Class Guarantee B
ritish Airways is so confident that its Club World experience will exceed expectations of any business class to London that it’s making an offer that it believes few travellers will refuse: guarantee the best business class experience. Starting this month, and running through December 31, 2007, the airline is offering passengers who register in advance a guarantee on its business class service. If British Airways does not exceed customers’ business class expectations in Club World on the airline’s flights to London, they will receive a free one-way upgrade to First class (where available) on a future flight to London the next time they fly in business class from Canada or the U.S., or 25,000 miles awarded to their Executive Club account. To qualify for this offer, registered

Alaska Airlines Boeing MD-80.
W
hen Captain George “Skip” Ziegler hung up his wings and retired from Alaska Airlines last month, he had accumulated more than 18,000 hours of flight time in the MD-80. No pilot in the world is believed to have more. The Boeing Co. recognized that fact when it presented Ziegler with a personalized MD-80 data plate as a token of “appreciation for your unparalleled dedication to the MD-80 Whisper Jet.” The unique retirement gift is similar to an automobile license plate. Bolted to the airframe, the data plate displays the aircraft’s make, model, serial number and manufacture date. Ziegler’s plate features his name as the make and birthday as the manufacture date. “Your personalized airplane data plate is a legal document and closely controlled by Boeing and the FAA,” said Dennis O’Donoghue, vice president of flight operations, test and validation for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “To our knowledge, you are the highest-time MD-80 pilot in the world.” With major airlines, including Alaska, retiring their MD-80 fleets, “it’s a record that is likely never to be broken,” said Kevin Finan, executive vice president of special projects and interim vice president of flight
operations. “Skip is the ‘Iron Man’ of the MD-80.” Overall, Ziegler accumulated an astonishing 23,000 to 24,000 hours of civilian and military flight time during his 38-year career. During all these years of flying, “You brought all home safely and weathered the all-too-often assortment of flight, ground and training checks flawlessly—a truly remarkable achievement,” said O’Donoghue. Inspired by an uncle who was a radio operator on a B-17 bomber during World War II, Ziegler began his aviation career flying C-141 cargo jets in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Air Force Reserves in 1990 with the rank of major. Along with Finan, Ziegler was a member of the first class of pilots hired by Jet America when it was founded in 1981. He has been flying the MD-80 ever since (and joined Alaska Airlines when the carrier acquired Jet America in 1986). “I’m the MD-80’s No. 1 fan,” Ziegler said. “It was love at first sight. I like the way it looks, the way it flies and how quiet it is. It’s just a terrific aircraft.” Ziegler is also a fan of classic automobiles. He owns more than 70, including 25 1932 Fords. Like the MD-80, when Ziegler finds something he likes, he sticks with it.

More Than 380 Patents Filed For Airbus A380 D
uring the A380 development phase, Airbus filed more than 380 patent applications for technologies developed for the all new double-decker. Since the A380 program was launched in December 2000, these new technologies have been put through rigorous testing. Significant breakthrough innovations have been achieved in aerodynamics, cabin design, engine integration, flight controls, aircraft systems, manufacturing techniques and the extensive use of advanced lightweight composite materials, making the A380 the world’s most advanced and efficient airliner. Among the innovations for which Airbus has filed patent applications is the Zero Splice inlet that is integrated into the A380 engines’ nacelles. This invention, which consists of a single 360-degree composite piece, instead of several separate panels spliced together, contributes significantly to the A380’s very low noise emissions. Another Airbus industry first is the extensive use of advanced lightweight materials, such as Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), for the large primary structures of the A380. Airbus has patented a new joining process for producing the world’s first ever carbon-fibre composite centre wing-box for a commercial aircraft. Some 25 per cent of the A380 structure is made of composites, generating a total weight
saving of 15 tonnes, which contributes to its low fuel consumption and low noise emissions. Airbus has also filed patents for the many innovative systems developed for the A380. These include its avionics data communication network (ADCN), which supports the increasing intersystem communication needs with the benefit of further improving data integrity and transmission speed. Another significant breakthrough in aircraft systems is the Brake-toVacate function that optimizes the amount of energy used for braking and reduces runway occupancy time, while also ensuring a high level of passenger comfort during landing. Patent applications also cover the Electrical Back-up Hydraulic Actuator (EBHA) which is part of the A380’s new two energy, fourchannel flight controls architecture. Conventional flight controls architecture on commercial aircraft has three hydraulic channels. The A380 architecture increases the performance and reliability of the flight controls system due to its dual energy source (electrical and hydraulic) and reduces weight by suppressing one hydraulic circuit. Airbus patented technologies will continue to be further improved during the service life of the A380 and a number of these have already been adopted for the A350 XWB.

Round-The-World Flyer Visits His Father In Vancouver
German small airplane on a world trip lands in Canada
P
ilot Uwe Thomas Carstensen (60) and his co-pilot Hans Christian Albertsen (59) are currently flying around the world in a singlemotor airplane. They have already had many experiences on their stops to date, but the stopover in Vancouver on August 29 was a particular event for the pilot: Carstensen met up with his 88-year-old father, who emigrated to Canada in 1953. Whilst planning the world trip, which began in mid-March, it was obvious to Carstensen from the start that his route would have to go via Vancouver so he could see his father. Carsten Hans Carstensen visits his family in Germany every two or three years—so father and son had not seen each other for some years. The duo’s Cessna T260H landed at the Vancouver International Airport, and the round-the-world flyers took four days off for the reunion at Logan Lake, B.C. After the Canadian reunion, the two pilots had several long-haul flights straight across Canada ahead of them. Earlier this month, they flew from Vancouver to Fort McMurray; followed by a landing in Churchill, Manitoba. The trip continues this month, via Hudson Bay and further on to Iqaluit, before Carstensen and Albertsen leave Canada for Greenland. The round-the-world flyers’ Cessna T260H is also known as the rose-painted plane. It is decorated with pictures of red roses and inscribed with the name “Marie”—a declaration of love from the pilot to

The Carstensen and Albertsen duo is the 139th crew since 1924 to fly around the globe in a singlemotor plane. So far, they have landed in South-East Europe, the Middle East, Pakistan, India, South-East Asia, Australia, Indonesia Malaysia, Cambodia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Russia and Alaska. The route back will take them via Greenland, Iceland and Great Britain to Germany, where the journey will end later this month in Hanover. Helijet Receives Contract Extension For Ambulance Service H
elijet has been awarded a twoyear extension to its existing British Columbia Air Ambulance helicopter contract. The contract has an estimated value of $10-million. Although the final terms of the extension will be negotiated in the coming months, the contract extension means Helijet will continue to operate two dedicated air medical helicopters for the Province of British Columbia into September 2010. Both helicopters will continue to be based at Helijet’s hangar at Vancouver International Airport’s South Terminal and will be used primarily for critical-care patient
transfers between communities and greater Vancouver critical-care centres. The helicopters and their crew will be on call 24/7 year-round. “We’re proud to work with the BC Air Ambulance Service and help deliver critical health care service to people in every corner of the province,” said Danny Sitnam, Helijet’s president and CEO. “The
patients we transfer every day are some of the most vulnerable passengers in B.C. That’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.” Every year, Helijet air ambulance pilots and BC Ambulance Service paramedics provide air medical transfers and critical care for approximately 600 adult and infant patients on Vancouver Island and in Southwestern B.C.
Airports Across Canada Adopt WestJet’s Electronic Boarding Pass Airline is first in North America to launch paperless service
L
ast month, WestJet began accepting electronic boarding passes at all 26 Canadian airports at which the airline operates. WestJet is the first airline in North America to use this paperless format to check in and board guests. Using the innovative system, travellers may proceed through security and board their WestJet flight using an electronic boarding pass displayed on their personal mobile device. “We are thrilled that all 26 of WestJet’s Canadian airports have accepted the electronic boarding pass,” said Dale Tinevez, vice-president of airports for WestJet. “Thanks to the cooperation of these airports
we are able to continue to build our exceptional guest experience across the country through this new and environmentally friendly service. Our team has worked diligently to bring this innovation to our guests.” During the WestJet Web check-in process, travellers will now be presented boarding pass options. They can choose to print their boarding pass immediately or at the airport, or select the electronic boarding pass option and have an e-mail sent to their mobile device. They will then show the boarding pass displayed on their mobile device to proceed through security and to board their flight.

life-size replicas set in a recreation of a lush cretaceous riverbed environment—how Alberta looked 70 million years ago: humid, rich with swamps, ponds and marshes. The Cretaceous Garden exhibit houses the largest living collection of prehistoric plants in Canada. The museum is located six kilometres northwest of the town of Drumheller in southern Alberta’s Canadian Badlands—where some of the world’s most significant dinosaur finds have been made. How It All Began In 1884, the museum’s namesake, geologist Joseph Tyrrell, accidentally discovered the skull of Canada’s first meat-eating dinosaur in the rocks exposed in the badlands. The largest predator of its time, it later became known as Albertosaurus sarcophagus, “the flesh-eating lizard of Alberta.” And the rest, as they say, is history. Home to some 125,000 fossil specimens, one of the most popular and impressive exhibits is the gigantic Dinosaur Hall with nearly 40 mounted dinosaur skeletons. Tyrannosaurus rex— “king of the lizard tyrants”— dominates the display, inspiring awe in children and adults alike. New Exhibits Having recently completed a period of renewal, the museum now boasts 1,950 square metres of new exhibits. With three new permanent galleries and one travelling exhibit, visitors can travel back 70 million
years to the Cretaceous Period, come face to face with Alberta’s newest dinosaur, walk among the province’s most ferocious carnivores, and learn what cold really meant. Be sure to visit the Nexen Science Hall, where interactive stations help prepare you for your journey through
the museum. You’ll find many hands-on exhibits, computer simulations, and multimedia exhibits, such as the Burgess Shale diorama. Now a mountain ridge 2,300 metres above sea level, the Burgess Shale was once the underwater home of more than 140 species that lived together 545-490 million years ago. In the walk-through exhibit, you can enter their strange world and see 46 of the creatures recreated to 12 times their actual size. The museum offers many programs for families, including day trips and overnight camps for children. Join a guided hike to a nearby excavation site or into the coulees and canyons of the badlands. The Royal Tyrrell Museum celebrates the spectacular history and diversity of life on earth. It is Canada’s only institution devoted entirely to palaeontology and is internationally recognized for its innovative research, extraordinary collections and dynamic galleries. Visit The Canadian Badlands There is much to see and do with dinosaurs in the Canadian Badlands. When planning a trip to the Royal

Tyrrell Museum, include a trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers bus tours and guided interpretive hikes through badlands, bone fields and fossil beds. The museum operates a field station at the park, where palaeontologists continue the work of unearthing plant and animal fossils from these ancient beds. Plan to spend some time to take in the Hoodos, which take millions of years to form and stand five to seven metres tall. Each hoodoo is a sandstone pillar resting on a thick base of shale that is capped by a large stone. Hoodoos are very fragile and can erode completely if their capstone is dislodged (in other words, no climbing allowed). Another must-see is the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic site, one of the most complete coal mining museums in Canada. Tours and educational programs make a visit to this historical attraction fun and fascinating. The Royal Tyrrell Museum’s hours of operation are Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m.

The 3,000 airplanes built and delivered from the Boeing Everett, Washington factory, include 747, 767 and 777 models. The Everett site is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The airplane is joining the Korean Air fleet of 123 airplanes, which includes 13 777-200ERs, four 777300s, 24 747-400s and 21 747-400 Freighters. Korean Air plans to use the new 777 for long-haul business routes to the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. Korean Air also has 35 additional airplanes on order from the Everett programs including 777-300ERs, 777 Freighters, 747-8 Freighters and 787 Dreamliners. In addition, the airline has four 737s on order from the Boeing factory in Renton, Washington. Over the years, the 3,000 widebody airplanes assembled at the Everett site have established a strong track record. Combined, the 747, 767 and 777 have completed more than 34.5million flights through June 2007. They have logged approximately 148-million flight hours or nearly 17,000 years of flight time. The airplanes have flown approximately 131-billion kilometres, which is the
equivalent of flying around the world 3.3-million times. “We can all take great pride in the achievements these airplanes have made and continue to make,” said Ross R. Bogue, vice president and general manager, 747/767/777 programs and Everett site. “The Boeing 747, 767 and 777 are amazing airplanes with an unparalleled record of reliability, which is illustrated by the number of Boeing widebody airplanes in service today.” Currently, more than 80 per cent of the airplanes built at the Everett site-

Cathay’s Dragonair To Join Oneworld
D
ragonair – named “Best Airline - China” for the sixth year running in the latest international Skytrax passenger survey—will join the oneworld global airline alliance on November 1, 2007. Hong Kong-based Dragonair serves more destinations in Mainland China—19 in total—than any other airline not based there, with some 400 flights a week. Twelve of these destinations will be new to the oneworld network – Chongqing, Changsha, Chengdu, Fuzhou, Haikou, Kunming, Guilin, Ningbo, Nanjing, Shenyang, Sanya and Wuhan. With the addition of Dragonair, oneworld will serve 22 destinations in Mainland China. Elsewhere, Dragonair will add Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Phuket (Thailand) to the oneworld alliance
map. By adding Phnom Penh, oneworld will connect with one new country—Cambodia. Dragonair was elected on board oneworld late last year, following its integration with alliance founder member Cathay Pacific Airways in September 2006. While it is now part of the Cathay Pacific group, Dragonair has retained its own brand and identity, market positioning and separate “KA” flight code. It will be the 11th carrier to board oneworld this year, in the alliance’s biggest expansion program since its launch. Japan Airlines and five of its affiliates, Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines all joined on April 1, along with affiliates LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador. As an affiliate member of oneworld, Dragonair will offer the alliance’s full range of services and ben-

Boeing Airplane-Monitoring System Adds Six Airlines
S
ix airlines adopted Boeing’s inflight airplane-monitoring system in the first half of the year, bringing to 15 the number of airlines and freight carriers to sign for the program. Airplane Health Management (AHM) now provides real-time monitoring and decision support for 42 per cent of the world’s 777s and 28 percent of its 747-400s. Japan Airlines and Singapore Airlines were the first to adopt the innovative condition-monitoring package when it was introduced in late 2005. This year, Air Austral, Austrian Airlines, Emirates, TNT Airways and Virgin Atlantic have signed for AHM. One of the six new customers is unidentified. In addition to the program’s first two customers, carriers who signed to use Airplane Health Management prior to 2007 include: Air France, Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific Airways, Egyptair and Thai Airways. “This customer list speaks to the value that Airplane Health Management offers carriers,” said Dan da Silva, vice president of sales and marketing for Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. “With this tool, airlines can address problems proactively and begin working on issues before an airplane lands and arrives at the gate. That kind of lead time can help an airline turn what might have
been a costly, disruptive delay into routine maintenance.” AHM supports long-term fleetreliability programs by helping airlines identify and respond to faults proactively. The system provides fleet-wide information aggregated from other operators, which can be used to determine, for example, the effectiveness of particular maintenance actions in fixing problems. The goal is to help airlines operate at the highest levels of reliability and efficiency. AHM is a key element in Boeing’s efforts to help airlines gather and use precise, practical and timely information through the use of multiple digital solutions. The e-Enabled products, which include Maintenance Performance Toolbox and the Class 3 Electronic Flight Bag, are designed to integrate seamlessly with each other to offer an effective, flexible response to airlines’ maintenance needs. In recent months, a number of airlines have adopted multiple Boeing e-Enabled products. Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, Air New Zealand, Air France, UPS and Thai Airways all have adopted multiple Boeing digital solutions.
