Professional and Services category. YVRAS was honoured for exporting its airport management expertise to an international network of airports and received top marks for its growth in foreign markets as well as its outstanding professional services. From attracting new airlines to increasing airport retail opportunities, YVRAS implements best practices from YVR in each of its 18 airports on three continents, including Kamloops, Fort St. John and Cranbook airports here in B.C., airports in Hamilton, Ontario and Moncton, New Brunswick, as well as airports in Chile, Jamaica, the Turks and Caicos islands, Cyprus and the Dominican Republic. Airports in the YVRAS’ network have been honoured with various recognitions over the years. For example, Forbes Magazine rated the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Chile the seventh best airport in the world; the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Canada won first place for best corporate branding campaign at the Airports Council International – North America Conference and Exhibition in 2004.

fees charged to airlines operating international passenger and cargo flights into YVR, making our airport’s international landing fees the lowest of all major Canadian airports. In March, we introduced the new face of YVR, represented by our new logo and the opening of the first phase of the new International Terminal wing, our largest expansion in more than 10 years. The expansion, which opened fully in June, added more than 36,000 square metres of terminal space and

A number of new baggage systems will be placed into full operation in 2008, including new Domestic Terminal inbound carousels, advanced screening equipment and transfer lines between the International and Domestic terminals to provide seamless luggage transfers for passengers connecting at YVR. All of these enhancements will increase baggage processing efficiency, which means getting your luggage from one place to another will be faster and easier. The expansion of C-Pier will begin in 2008. This area of the

• United Beverages Group, the third-largest spirits company in the world, owns Kingfisher Airlines. • Kingfisher is India’s largest domestic airline, connecting 69 cities and offering more than 570 flights daily with a fleet of 78 aircraft. • The airline has ordered several Airbus A340-500s, which would be ideal for non-stop operations between Vancouver and Delhi. • Kingfisher is one of only six airlines in the world to have a five-star rating from Skytrax, which represents the quality rating of standards applied across an airline’s product and service standards, along with Asiana Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways.

The coming year will see many more projects reach completion. Perhaps one of the most important projects of 2008 is the redesign of the passenger service/public greeting area in the International Terminal. It will provide a fullservice international reception lounge with a customer office providing 24/7 support for international arriving passengers and those meeting them. The X-35 was an experimental aircraft by Lockheed Martin for the Joint Strike Fighter Program. It was declared the winner over the Boeing X-32 and went on to enter production in the early 21st century as the F-35 Lightning II. Elements of the F-35 design were pioneered by the F-22 Raptor. Lockheed had a teaming relationship with the Yakovlev Design Bureau on their bid for the Joint Advanced Strike Technology competition. This has fueled speculation that the overall design of the F-35 was heavily influenced by the Yak-141, however, the two aircraft are very different.

effective December 1, 2007. In his new role, Hill will lead and oversee all facets of fixed wing jet and helicopter air service operating standards and commercial development, with the support of a highly qualified management team. Hill has maintained a senior position with Helijet for 18 years and has managed commercial, financial and technical operations while overseeing the primary development of Helijet’s scheduled helicopter air services. Hill’s extensive background in aviation leads back to overseeing financial reporting and route planning at CP Air, then at Canadian Airlines, where he was instrumental in integrating Canadian’s regional network with the mainline parent carrier. “Rick’s industry experience gives Helijet a tremendous advantage over other carriers,” said Sitnam. “Rick’s new role will channel his expertise for integrating operational and commercial standards within Helijet. That means keeping our high standard of safety; all the while further improving our already high level of customer service for our travelling clients.” Helijet International Inc. is a Canadian-owned company and is North America’s largest scheduled helicopter service, as well as a significant provider to British Columbia’s air medical services. Helijet is celebrating its 21st anniversary and has received numerous awards for outstanding customer service and safety standards.

New service lets international passengers tell greeters they’ve arrived

I

f you’ve ever been at YVR waiting for a family member or friend arriving on an international flight, you know

there can sometimes be a significant delay between the time their flight arrives and the time they enter the public greeting area. This is because passengers arriving on international flights must travel from the gate to the Customs Hall, complete border processes and collect their luggage before they get to you. Last December YVR introduced a new service to allow arriving passengers to post their name on a screen in the public greeting area to let their party know they’ve arrived. This new YVR Greeter Information Board is the first of its kind in Canada. Greeter Information Board in International Arrivals Public Greeting Area: New service allows passengers in the Customs Hall to visit a Customer Information Counter and ask to have their name displayed on the Greeter Information Board in the public greeting area to let their party know they have arrived.

How does it work? Once passengers clear the primary inspection line—the row of booths at the entrance to the Customs Hall where Customs Officers check your passport—and enter the Customs Hall, they can go to the 24-hour

Greeter Information from page 7 have trouble finding the Information Counter. Another way you can prepare yourself if you’re meeting an international passenger is to make sure you have their flight number and check the status of their flight before you leave for the airport. You can do this by clicking on “Arrivals” on the homepage of the YVR website—www.yvr.ca—or by phoning the airline. Have a plan for getting in touch if things don’t go as planned, and be aware that border processes for new immigrants, students and workers to Canada generally take more time. Processes may also take longer during busy periods. If you have questions or concerns while waiting for your passenger, talk to one of our Customer Care Representatives at the 24-hour BC Visitor Centre, located in the International Arrivals public greeting area.
