The 16th World Route Development Forum, or World Routes, has come and gone from Vancouver, but several significant announcements will ensure its lasting legacy. For YVR, two key developments—the announcement by B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell that he will introduce legislation to eliminate the aviation fuel tax for international commercial flights operating out of B.C.’s airports, and the Airport Authority’s own introduction of a five-year incentive program to help increase routes and capacity at YVR—are expected to produce significant results. “It is expected that the resulting capacity increase will add the equivalent of eight to ten new international daily flights, or approximately 1.1-million additional airline seats over the next five years,” said Larry Berg, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. Not only do new air services and increased frequencies offer more options for travellers,

expanded air service from YVR contributes substantially to British Columbia’s economy. Every new daily international long-haul flight into YVR generates between $5-million and $8-million in wages and contributes between $8-million and $15-million to B.C.’s gross domestic product annually. “I applaud Premier Campbell’s decision to introduce legislation that would eliminate the aviation fuel tax in British Columbia for international commercial flights,” said Mary Jordan, chair, Board of Directors, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This exciting announcement surely marks a new stage of growth for our industry, particularly when coupled with the ongoing efforts of the Airport Authority’s leadership team to strengthen YVR’s position and develop Vancouver International Airport as a premier global gateway.” Domestic carriers Air Canada and WestJet applauded both the fuel tax relief plan and the Airport

Celebrating the grand opening: Renee Tedesco, vice president, HMSHost Business Development; Sam Ho, treasurer of the Board, Quest Food Exchange; James Kennedy (chef); Tony Gugliotta, senior VP marketing & commercial development, Vancouver Airport Authority; Warren Erhart, president of White Spot Limited; and Joe Lutz, senior vice president, HMSHost West Region Operations.

For many visitors, a trip to B.C. is not complete without a taste of a Triple O burger from White Spot, and now YVR passengers have one more “spot” to pick one up on the fly. On October 1, White Spot opened its doors in YVR’s Domestic Terminal, bringing its fresh and distinctive flavours to airport passengers. Serving all the familiar favourites including Spot Classics like burgers with Triple O sauce and dill pickles, White Spot also offers fresh salads, pastas, rice bowls, stir-frys and entrées from the grill. And for the kids, nothing can beat a White Spot Pirate Pak complete with ice-cream and a chocolate coin. For more than 80 years, White Spot has been a legend here in B.C. While restaurants can now be found everywhere from Hope to Hong Kong, for a long-time White Spot

restaurants were only in B.C. On more than one occasion, passengers and flight-crews at YVR were seen taking Triple O burgers with them for friends and family who were craving a taste of B.C. “White Spot is a tried and true West Coast favourite and we are thrilled that travellers, YVR employees and local residents will be able to experience our new restaurant,” said Warren Erhart, president of White Spot Limited. “Whether the dining occasion is for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a drink and appetizer, guests will enjoy great tasting food and best in class service.” White Spot at YVR is located before security on the Departures Level of the Domestic Terminal and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, from 6am to 11pm daily. Stop in next time you’re at the airport and get your last taste of B.C. on the fly.

WestJet expands international service with Cathay code-share agreement

WestJet and Cathay Pacific have launched a code-share agreement, which allows passengers travelling between Hong Kong and Canada to connect directly to WestJet flights once landing in Vancouver or Toronto under one ticket. The Canadian Transportation Agency has given its approval to the code-share deal, clearing Cathay Pacific planes to fly to Canada and connect passengers to routes on WestJet’s network as of October 20. Under the new arrangement, Cathay Pacific’s CX code will be placed on WestJet flights between Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa and Winnipeg and the Hong Kong carrier’s two Canadian gateways, Vancouver and Toronto. “We are very pleased to announce this new code-share arrangement with WestJet,” said Tony Tyler, Cathay’s chief executive. “This latest partnership will further expand our network and give passengers seamless connections on a quality carrier to six more cities in Canada—a country that’s popular both as a leisure and business destination for travellers from Hong Kong and Mainland China.” The new code share with Cathay is the first such arrangement for WestJet, which signed an interline pact with Cathay earlier this year allowing the two airlines to work together on baggage handling and other tasks. “Our first code-share is yet another significant milestone in the history of Canada’s favourite airline,” said Gregg

Saretsky, WestJet’s president and CEO. “We are very excited to partner with Cathay Pacific, one of the world’s most prestigious and successful airlines, to offer our unique guest experience to a whole new group of guests. As we continue to achieve our strategic goals, today’s announcement is the first in a series of planned codeshare agreements that help to solidify our vision to become one of the five most successful international airlines in the world.” WestJet has also entered into a baggage agreement with Dragon Air, a regional Cathay Pacific subsidiary. All reservations for interline bookings will be handled by Cathay Pacific. North America has long been one of Cathay Pacific’s key markets. In addition to expanding its worldwide network through the launch of new routes, the airline has also been working closely with many partners on code-share flights to offer passengers increased connectivity. WestJet has made securing code-sharing agreements a key component of its growth strategy, since its own fleet does not have enough range for transoceanic flights. WestJet already has a deal with Air France and KLM to bring European traffic into its network. A code-share arrangement with Dallasbased Southwest Airlines that was first reached in 2008 fell through earlier this year, when the two airlines disagreed on changes WestJet wanted to the agreement.

Infused with the excitement of global air travel and a decidedly international flavour, the Routes 2010 forum brought to Vancouver thousands of airline, airport and tourism decision-makers to shape the future of air service. Much of the strategic route development business took place during hundreds of one-on-one sessions in the airline meeting halls located at either end of the conference floor, but most of the networking happened in the more than 50 informative and entertaining exhibits. Here, airports and tourism authorities used everything from magical floating business men (Gatwick Airport), magicians (Prague Airport) and Las Vegas showgirls (Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority) to Wii demonstrations (Warsaw’s Chopin Airport), Norwegian chocolate (Oslo Airport) and whisky tastings (Scotland Tourism) to entice airlines to consider air service to their airports and destinations.

Announcements

Over the course of the three-day event, BC Premier Gordon Campbell announced that he would introduce legislation to axe jet fuel tax in a bid to encourage air service development to the province. Larry Berg, CEO of host Vancouver Airport Authority said eliminating the tax of two cents per litre for international flights, along with a freeze on all international airline charges at 2010 levels for the next five years, would cement Vancouver’s position as an Asia-focused gateway. “This is an example of government and the private sector working together to encourage the development of new aviation services and increase traffic while at the same time encourage economic development across the country,” said Berg. Air Canada announced that it will offer daily non-stop flights to: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda (beginning January 29,

This year’s event saw a surge in airline attendance, with some 450 delegates representing more than 250 airlines—an increase of approximately 30 per cent from last year. “We are very pleased with the outcome of the event,” said Nigel Mayes, managing director of Routes. “As well as those we heard at the forum itself, we

expect numerous new route announcements to be made over the coming months

as a direct result of meetings that took place at World Routes.”

By the month of October, the first day of school can seem like a distant memory, but for the 90 kids who were a part of the first day of YVR’s school tour program last month, it was back to school excitement all over again. On September 28, Vancouver Airport Authority kicked-off its Future Lands Here school tour program for local grade five students and hosted the first three classes. The program is designed to give children an opportunity to learn about travel and aviation at YVR using practical, informative and interactive activities. Each tour starts at the Canada Line Templeton Station and after a short ride on the train, the students are given a terminal walkthrough to learn about what they might experi-

ence if they’re travelling with their family. Other topics in the tour include YVR’s geography and natural surroundings, its connections to First Nations culture and history and some of the sustainable initiatives at the airport. One of the highlights is a visit to the Public Observation Area, where the kids could take-in views of the airfield and try out the telescopes, kiosks and interactive maps. The Future Lands Here tour program was first launched in 2009 with nearly 3,000 students participating. The 2010 program runs until November 25 and while it is already fully booked, you can get more information about YVR’s School Program or be added to the waitlist by contacting School_Program@yvr.ca.

Study shows enhanced aviation policy would benefit Canadian economy Canada’s four largest airlines generate as much as $50-billion a year in direct and indirect benefits for the Canadian economy, but they could contribute significantly more if the federal government modified its aviation policies, according to a new study. The study, commissioned by the National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC), a trade association founded by Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz, WestJet and Air Transat, examines the impact of the NACC’s members on the Canadian economy, the cost of government policy to airlines and their customers and policy options to enhance the industry’s competitiveness. The study concludes that eliminating certain taxes and other charges specific to the industry alone could result in an additional economic output of between $869-million and $3.3-billion from NACC members. “The air transport industry, led by the members of the NACC, is a key sector in spurring productivity growth,” wrote the study’s author, Fred Lazar of the Schulich School of Business at Ontario’s York University. “Consequently, there are sound economic and policy reasons for ensuring that the air transport industry thrives in Canada and that Canadian carriers succeed in the North American and international markets. Changing the policy course from the current one where the air transport industry is viewed strictly from a fiscal position, to one where it is recognized as a key contributor to productivity growth

requires cutting the costs faced by this industry.” The study recommends the federal government eliminate ground rents for Canadian airports, the Air Transport Security Charge and the federal excise tax on jet fuel—measures that alone could increase traffic by more than two-million passengers annually. The report, called The Economic Impacts of the Member Carriers of the National Airlines Council of Canada, also found: • NACC members carried more than

48-million passengers and directly employed almost 40,000 people in 2009. Total revenues of the four airlines exceeded $14-billion, with expenditures of just under $11-billion. Their estimated total economic output impact was $19.6-billion, and the total number of jobs created by the NACC members was at least 84,800. • Taking into account important secondary impacts, the potential tourism-induced effects of the NACC members might have contributed an

Warehouse for Lease 24,500 Square feet

additional total economic output of $29-billion in 2009. • The air transport sector plays an important role in facilitating trade, a key driver of the Canadian economy. In 2009, the total value of exports and imports shipped by air between Canada and the rest of the world was $94-billion. • During the past 10 years, the federal government has collected directly and indirectly almost $6.9-billion from the air transport industry in Canada. “At a time when the government is

looking to stimulate the economy, create jobs and spur growth, boosting the aviation sector is a way to achieve all three while also making it easier for Canadians to travel,” said George Petsikas, NACC president. “Airlines and airports in Canada must be treated by government policy as strategic partners in our country’s long term economic development and global competitiveness.” It is estimated that NACC members might experience an increase of 2.1-million to 2.7-million passengers each year if ground rents, the Air Travellers’ Security Charge (ATSC) and the excise tax on jet fuel are eliminated, and NAV Canada, the corporation that owns and operates Canada’s civil air navigation service, is reimbursed for its annual costs for servicing the $1.5-billion debt it took on when it was privatized in 1996. The NACC estimates that eliminating these taxes might lead to an additional economic output generated by its members of between $869-million and $3.3-billion. At last month’s World Route Development Forum in Vancouver, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell announced that he will introduce legislation to eliminate jet-fuel tax on international commercial flights in a bid to encourage air service development to British Columbia and provide substantial savings to airlines, which currently pay about $17-million annually in aviation-fuel tax.

Did You Know? In 1931, the first terminal building at Airport South was a two-storey wood-frame structure with a control tower on the roof. It housed the airport administration, customs, waiting room and a restaurant. Included in the $300,000 price tag was a seaplane harbour, two concrete aircraft hangars, two runways, roads, parking area and municipal services that included an all-important drainage system.

Did you know that the way you dress can impact your experience at the preboard security screening checkpoint? If you have not been randomly selected for secondary screening but set off the walk-through metal detector, you will require further screening that may include hand-wanding and/or a physical search. The following suggestions may speed up the screening process and decrease the likelihood of setting off the alarm: • Be ready to remove coats, jackets and blazers and place them in the bins provided; • Dress comfortably with easy-to-remove outerwear, jackets and belts; • Limit jewellery to small earrings, watches, wedding bands/engagement rings, eyeglasses; • Wear clothing without snaps, metal

buttons or studs; • Avoid wearing shoes with metal arches, buckles, steel-toes or shanks; • Avoid wearing belts with metal buckles; • Remove hidden body piercings before you fly; • Store all GPS equipment, iPods, PDA’s, mobile phones, and smartphones (i.e. BlackBerry, iPhone) in carry-on baggage; • Be ready to empty contents of your shirt and pant pockets and place these items in the bins before passing through the walk-through metal detector. Gap Adventures offers cool trips for cold weather-loving travellers When some travellers weigh vacation options, their thoughts drift to beaches, fast-paced cities and luxurious resorts. Adventure travellers, on the other hand, tend to think outside the traditional travel box. For them, a winter trek across snow-covered tundra is just as appealing as time lazing on a sun-drenched beach. To satisfy their cold-weather wishes, Gap Adventures teamed with outdoor apparel maker Canada Goose last year to develop a full line of intriguing itineraries. Canada Goose Adventures take travellers to a wide range of destinations across Canada, Finland, Sweden and Argentina. Treks include embarking on reindeer safaris, staying in igloos and ice hotels and encountering the unique cultures of the Far North and South. And to ensure those passionate polar trekkers look stylish as they sled, snowshoe and snowmobile their way across the icy terrain, the itineraries include a Canada Goose Adventurer jacket for each traveller. This year, the tour operator is adding new options to its chilly trip line-up including an Arctic Wildlife Adventure (starting at CDN$7,709 per adult). During this eight-day journey, local Inuit guides escort travellers to Nunavut’s floe-edge—where land meets water in a place that truly feels like the edge of the Earth—and provides the opportunity to glimpse the polar bears,

narwhals and beluga whales that converge in the area. New for 2011, three Europe-based Canada Goose tours—Finland Winter Activity Week and Igloo Village, Finland Winter Activity Week and Reindeer Safari and Sweden and the Ice Hotel—have been designated as independent trips to maximize the number of available departure dates, while still maintaining their unique activities and appeal. These solo journeys offer travellers greater freedom and flexibility to discover the full natural appeal of these spectacular destinations. Other popular Canada Goose trips include an 11-day Patagonia Winter Activity Week (starting at CDN$3,569 per person)—a stunning trek through the mountainous and glacier-pocked regions of southern Argentina, as well as the exciting Quebec Activity Week and Winter Carnival (starting at CDN$3,209). The eight-day tour, which now includes a snowshoeing excursion in the Charlevoix region, departs from Quebec City and features ample opportunity for dog-sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and stays in secluded log cabins along the north bank of the St. Lawrence River. Melancholy name for a joyous festival A holiday called “Day of the Dead” might evoke an image of a gruesome and scary time, but in Mexico it is in fact a cheerful celebration and a favourite time of the year for Mexican children. Homes get decorated, candles are lit and delicious treats are prepared. Festivities, which take place October 30-November 2, focus on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed. In Playa del Carmen, the main beach

town in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, streets come alive with music, dancing and are filled with the aroma of tasty treats. Nearby Xcaret, an eco-cultural family park just six kilometres south of Playa del Carmen, organizes a colourful Life and Death festival every year, with traditional food, art, music, contests and shows. The Riviera Maya is a stretch of white sand beaches and turquoise Caribbean Sea, located south of Cancun. The region offers various adventurous activities for endless family fun, such as zip-lining in the jungle, ATV rides, tours through underground rivers, swimming in cenotes (limestone

sinkholes), and visits to Mayan villages. In celebration of the Day of the Dead festival, Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen is offering 40 per cent off regular rates, and 50 per cent off any seven-night reservation for a condo booked from October 20-November 25, 2010. Regular rates start at US$145 per night per one bedroom studio. Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen, consisting of five luxury condo hotels located next to each other, offers condo apartment accommodations complete with kitchen and living room, outdoor pools, rooftop Jacuzzis, ocean views, and lush tropical foliage, as well as baby sitter and maid services. All five sister properties share amenities, including a beach club, two finedining restaurants, gym and spa. For more information, visit www.condohotelsplayadelcarmen.com. Fun event raises funds for CH.I.L.D.

Scott Harrold, general manager Landmark Aviation and Nancy Funnelle, customer service manager supervise the many door prizes awarded at the event. Last month, Landmark Aviation hosted a BBQ to raise funds for the Children with Intestinal and Liver Disorders (CH.I.L.D) Foundation, which funds medical research into Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, and liver disorders in children with a goal to find a cure for these disorders. The foundation was co-founded in 1995 by former B.C. politician Grace McCarthy and J. Lindsay Gordon, president of the HSBC Bank Canada at the Vancouver head office. The event drew attendees from all facets of aviation at YVR including Vancouver Airport Authority employees, airlines, fire,

RCMP, cargo, Canada Customs, and the entire Landmark aviation team. Landmark Aviation general manager Scott Harrold, a director of the CH.I.L.D. Foundation, helped barbecue the more than 300 hotdogs and hamburgers that were served to approximately 180 attendees. The fun event raised $450 for the foundation through donations deposited in a voluntary donation box. Since its inception 15 years ago, CH.I.L.D. has raised $15-million for research, built a research lab, the first of its kind in B.C. and established two Endowed Chairs for Research at U.B.C. and Children’s Hospital.

Last month, a new five-star resort opened on Sea Island. Luxury suites include sheepskin covers, plasma TV, catered meals and spa services. But this is a five-star resort with a difference—its special guests check in on four legs rather than two. Jet Pet Resort on Miller Road is a full service canine and feline resort conveniently located near YVR, which offers short- and long-term stays and 24-hour drop off and pickup for guests. The brainchild of owner Camila Dahl, a former pharmacy technician and lifelong animal lover, the concept for the facility was years in the planning, with just a location near the Vancouver airport needed to bring the plan to fruition. The building chosen to house Jet Pet Resort is a converted 1,400-square-metre warehouse leased from IAT Management on Miller Road. According to Wayne Duzita, vice president leasing IAT Management, the new facility is a perfect business fit as IAT currently has a tenant that transports pets by air. “Kennels are generally not in a convenient location to airport, and travellers may not have the time to take their pet to a kennel the night before and pick it up the day after they return from a business trip,” said Duzita.

“This on-airport site caters to the needs of customers at airports. We see this as another opportunity to market Vancouver International Airport and YVR airlines, and this is another feature to make travel a complete and care free adventure.” Jet Pet Resort offers four levels of suites and dog room rates including the Classic at $49 per night, Executive Suites at $59, Grand Suites at $69 and Luxury at $129. The latter come with private plasma TV, private lounge area with window seat, luxury bath, 30 minutes of private services—belly rubs and hugs—and an in-room web cam to connect owners to their pet from anywhere in the world. The full Rock Star Package, starting at $1,000 per night, includes private limo pickup and drop-off for Fido, luxury suite with 24-hour care, dog park

adventures, spa treatments, massage, catered meals and private walks. To prevent altercations between dogs and cats, the latter are housing in a separate wing. The litter box area is completely separate from the sleeping and playing space, and to prevent the spread of odours and contaminates, a high-tech air exchange system continuously circulate the air, kills bacteria with UV light treatment and eliminates odours with a carbon-plated infiltration system. A full team of pet care professionals staff Jet Pet Resort as Dahl, who is certified at pet first-aid, wants the best conditions and service for her pet guests. Older pets and those recovering from surgery or injuries are provided with therapeutic infrared beds to promote healing and quality of rest. While transportation accounts for the majority of animal activity at airport, companies offering pet boarding services have mushroomed in recent years. Ten U.S. and three Asian airports currently provide pet hotel boarding service, with Jet Pet hotel at YVR being the first of its kind at an airport in Canada. Located at 100-5980 Miller Road, Jet Pet Resort is open 24 hours day. Visit www.jetpetresort. com, or call (604) 238-7387.

Federal government expands internship program for newcomers Canada’s Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister, Jason Kenney, has announced a new program to help newcomers gain valuable Canadian work experience, a significant hurdle for many immigrants. This program offers newcomers the opportunity to acquire temporary Canadian work experience in fields relevant to their skills and experience. Newcomers can benefit from work placements within the federal government, which facilitates a smoother integration into the Canadian labour market for program participants. Over the past two years, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) piloted two similar internship initiatives. This year, in addition to HRSDC and CIC, several other federal departments and agencies are taking part in the expanded initiative, including: Health Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Atlantic Canada

Opportunities Agency, Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, Natural Resources Canada, and the Canada Border Services Agency. Over the past year, CIC and HRSDC were able to extend opportunities to 29 interns. This year, the number has more than doubled, with more than 60 interns participating in the fall intake. In addition to the policy, program and administrative positions offered last year, new internship positions have been added in fields such as finance, translation, communication and science. The expansion of this program follows up on a recommendation by the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. In addition to the departments and agencies that are ready to hire interns this fall, many others have expressed interest in a future intake. As the new program gains popularity, it is expected that the numbers will only increase as more federal organizations join the program.

The aircraft is used to conduct maritime surveillance, pollution and ice patrols as part of Transport Canada’s National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP). During the summer months, this aircraft conducts patrols throughout the Canadian Arctic, Alaska and Greenland. During the fall and winter months it is used to conduct patrols of the Great Lakes and east or west coasts of Canada as needed. In 2009, the aircraft was modernized and equipped on a 10-month period with a Maritime Surveillance System over a 10-month period. This marine pollution aerial surveillance equipment has greatly increased the detection capabilities of the aircraft. Submit your photos to jstewart@westerndriver.com. Newcomers Network Airport Services celebrates 18 years of service

CANN program officers assist a newly arrived Somalian family through the landing process at YVR. This month, the Community Airport Newcomers Network (CANN) at YVR celebrates 18 years of providing reception and orientation services to immigrants. CANN welcomes new Canadians, provides them with information on settlement, and assistance with the landing process. Since the program’s inception in 1992, more than 800,000 newcomers have been welcomed. “It is a privilege to be part of the Canadian Government’s vision and initiative, which allowed us to establish this innovative program almost two decades ago,” said Parampal Sharma, program manager CANN. “Being one of the first programs of its kind, it remains an exemplary model in the continuum of settlement service to immigrants.”

Sara Hellsten, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) district director at YVR acknowledged that the services provided to new immigrants by CANN are an important resource. “Many new immigrants travel considerable distances to start their new lives in an often unfamiliar territory,” said Hellsten. “Arriving in a new country can be a daunting experience for new immigrants, not only because they must deal with various border clearance formalities, but also know what to do after they leave the airport. As such, the Community Airport Newcomers Network helps immigrants by providing practical information to get them started on their new journey.” There are numerous success stories about the differences that CANN has made

in the lives of newcomers. Karima Laadouli, a CANN program officer, once helped a newcomer from Somali whose daughter had been killed just days before she came to Canada. The woman was distraught on arrival, and filled with doubt about her decision to pursue a life in Canada without her daughter. Laadouli provided empathy and support, helping her through the pre-settlement process. “Our organization plays a significant role in meeting the needs of landed immigrants and refugees at the airport,” said Sharma. “The program services we offer provide support at the crucial first step in settlement and integration in a new country, and our welcome provides an important first impression of Canada.”

Princess Cruises Island Princess is a 1,970-passenger vessel with 90 per cent ocean-view staterooms and more than 700 balconies. With the close of the 2010 cruise season, Port Metro Vancouver celebrates key cruise industry achievements in sustainability and looks toward renewed growth in 2011. Next year, the Disney Wonder vessel will home port in Vancouver for its inaugural Alaska season along with Oceania Cruises Regatta, and Crystal Cruises, which is set to pay nine port calls in Vancouver on its voyages to Alaska. The cruise industry has faced increased challenges in 2010, on the heels of the global economic downturn. However, sev-

eral cruise lines have seized an opportunity this year to advance eco-friendly initiatives like shore power—providing a power source from land to power vessels when in harbour. The Island Princess is one of four Princess ships, in addition to two Holland America ships, that connected to the new shore power facilities at Canada Place this season. Vancouver is the first port in Canada to offer shore power facilities. “Long-term sustainability is a top priority for Port Metro Vancouver,” said Robin Silvester, president and CEO of Port Metro

Queen Elizabeth II to name new Cunard vessel

This month, Queen Elizabeth II will preside over the naming ceremony of the new Cunard vessel that bears her name. The Queen named Cunard’s original QE2 in 1967, and was at Southampton in 2004 to name the Queen Mary 2. She was also present in 1938 when her mother, then Queen Elizabeth, launched the first Queen Elizabeth liner. The QE2 ended its life as an ocean

liner in 2008 and was sold to Dubaibased property developers. The new ship means Cunard’s fleet will again boast three Queens, along with the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. There will be a Cunard Line’s historic Royal Rendezvous January 13, 2011, when all three Queens—Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and the newly launched Queen Elizabeth—will sail into New York harbour on the same day.

Vancouver. “We are pleased to bring new and innovative sustainability programs to our port, and to work with industry leaders to reduce their carbon footprint here in Vancouver. This shore power initiative alone has reduced almost 3,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2010.” Port Metro Vancouver, the Government of Canada, the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and BC Hydro joined together to invest $9-million in providing shore power at Canada Place. Another important sustainable port initiative is the revitalized EcoAction for Shipping Program and the Blue Circle Awards. The program represents Port Metro Vancouver’s user-friendly financial incentive for vessels to reduce air emissions. During the 2010 cruise season, Port Metro Vancouver welcomed 177 calls, including 44 shore power connections, and more than 570,000 passengers. The cruise industry plays an important role in Metro Vancouver, stimulating more than $2-million in economic activity for every cruise ship call in Vancouver.

Extra distance required behind 787 and 747-8

Cathay expands its long-haul fleet

Air Traffic

The 747-8, which celebrated its maiden flight on February 8, 2010, is the fourth-generation Boeing 747. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which regulates and oversees all aspects of civil aviation in the U.S., has issued an interim requirement that planes landing after either of Boeing’s two new aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8 jumbo jet, stay at least 16 kilometres behind. Currently, large aircraft require just six kilometres of separation from other larger aircraft and up to nine kilometres from light aircraft. Separation standards are meant to keep aircraft from encountering the wake, or turbulence, from bigger planes flying ahead. This turbulence is a severely disruptive air flow that is generated at the wingtips of big airplanes and swirls backward in a spiralling vortex.

According to the FAA, studies indicate that wake vortices generated by the B747-8 and possibly by the B787 may be more substantial than those of aircraft in the ‘heavy’ wake turbulence category. If the ruling becomes permanent, the lengthy separation from other planes could cause potential problems for airlines operating the new Boeing jets, since it would reduce the number of these aircraft that could fly into a heavy-traffic airport. The FAA said final guidance on the issue will be announced after 787 and 747-8 flight tests are completed and evaluated. The carbon-composite 787 wide-body is almost three years behind schedule. It first flew in February and there are six aircraft in flight tests.

Air Canada boosts international flights from Vancouver Beginning this coming winter season, Air Canada is increasing international flights from Vancouver, its second largest Canadian hub. The airline will offer daily non-stop flights to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda (beginning January 29, 2011), Seoul, Sydney Australia, London Heathrow, and Mexico City (weekend service begins November 1, with

daily flights effective December 1, 2010). Daily non-stop flights to Frankfurt and three times weekly non-stop flights to Auckland are offered on a codeshare basis with Star Alliance partners Lufthansa and Air New Zealand, respectively. Total international capacity increase from Vancouver is 15 per cent this coming winter from a year ago.

Cathay Pacific Airways has ordered six additional Boeing 777-300ERs (extended range) for use in its long-haul fleet. The six new airplanes, with an estimated value of US$1.6-billion at Boeing list prices, will increase Cathay Pacific’s 777-300ER future fleet from 30 to 36. Cathay Pacific, one of the world’s largest operators of the popular jetliner, also operates 12 Boeing 777300s and five 777-200s. Cathay Pacific first announced its selection of the 777-300ER in 2005. This announcement is Cathay Pacific’s fourth increase in its acquisition plans for the long-range jetliner. “We are very pleased to confirm this purchase of six more Boeing 777-300ERs – a superb aircraft that already has significantly enhanced our operations

on key long-haul routes,” said Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Tony Tyler. “We have been very impressed by the operating economics of these aircraft, while their high efficiency has resulted in a reduced environmental impact. As we continue to enhance our fleet, the 777300ER will play a crucial role in our operations in the years to come.” The Boeing 777 is a twin-engine, long-haul airplane. Boeing incorporated several performance enhancements for the 777-300ER, extending its range and payload capabilities. Engine efficiency improvements and design changes that reduce drag and airplane weight have contributed to the aircraft’s increased capability. Sixty-one customers around the world have ordered more than 1,100 777s.

All black for Air New Zealand’s new A320

Last month, Air New Zealand revealed a fierce all-black livery design for the first aircraft in its new domestic jet fleet. The new livery is in recognition of the airline’s long time support of rugby, the nation’s favourite game, and the country’s famous team, the All Blacks. “In celebration of Air New Zealand’s long running support of rugby in New Zealand, our first new A320 will arrive in January sporting a sleek black livery complete with silver fern motif and Koru on its tail,” said Rob Fyfe.

The koru is used in a stylized form as the logo of Air New Zealand and is an iconic symbol of New Zealand’s flora. The first aircraft in the airline’s new domestic fleet of A320 aircraft will be the only one in the fleet featuring the new all black livery. The new domestic fleet of A320 aircraft, combined with Air New Zealand’s new long-haul fleet of Boeing 777-300 aircraft, which begin arriving from the end of this year, will ensure the airline continues to have one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the world.

You just know it’s a Mustang Introduced on April 17, 1964, and demonstrated in dealers’ showrooms across Canada in 1965, the Mustang was Ford’s most successful launch since the Model A. The instant bond created with buyers was understandable—the car simply had character. Forty-five years later, North America’s favourite muscle car still exhibits that character. New exterior design, new interior trim and technologies, plus increased V8 horsepower and that unmistakable Mustang exhaust note do justice to its longevity. “The best Mustangs have always been the ones that connect young North Americans with the spirit of the times,-and the 2010 does exactly that,” said J Mays, Ford’s vice-president of design. The 2010 Mustang combines modern technology with Mustang heritage in both design and engineering. In the movie Bullitt, legendary actor Steve McQueen drove a Dark Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT that gained cult status among Mustang enthusiasts, thanks to a seven-minute scene that car buffs believe defined the modern movie car chase. “All of the Bullitt elements are the base foundation of the GT,” said Paul Randle, Mustang chief engineer. To that base foundation, engine and

chassis improvements have been made and racing experience technology added. “We adjusted springs, stabilizer bars and shocks to better balance the ride, steering and handling for all models, which results in a more engaging driving experience,” said vehicle engineering manager Tom Barnes. “The 2010 Mustangs feel more controlled for steering and handling, yet retain a good ride balance.” The 2010 Mustang 4.6- litre V8 power plant benefits from innovations from the Bullitt model with increased capacity to 315 horsepower. “It runs on regular gasoline, but if you put in premium it has adaptive calibration that will give you even better mid-range torque” said Barnes. The interior is well planned and the finish is impressive, with seats and arm rests using softer materials and quality stitching. The chromed-ringed gauges, aluminun-finished instrument panels and console fit the heritage mould. Drivers also can customize their ambient and instrument lighting through a special colour system, which features 125 colour options including pink fluorescent. It’s no small feat to design, engineer and build a modern classic that retains its character. Good job, Ford.

The subcompact Fiesta outguns competitors Nissan Versa, Toyota’s Yaris and Corolla, and Honda Fit in performance, handling and comfort, but does not match the Fit in carrying capacity. For those who care about the bells and whistles, available features include Sync voice-activated control for cell phones and MP3 player, sunroof, keyless push button start, leather upholstery and heated front seats. A host of dealer accessories are also available. Ford says Fiesta is the next milestone under the ONE Ford plan to design and develop vehicles that meet the differing needs, wants and expectations of customers around the world. Up front, Fiesta sports the global Ford face, with Blue Oval badge centred on the grille over the signature inverted trapezoid lower grille opening. These subtle cues encourage familiarity across the Ford portfolio, providing aesthetic linkage between the new Taurus, midsize Fusion and the Fiesta. Ford expects the Fiesta to continue the sales momentum in Canada that it has achieved in Europe and Asia. More than 500,000 models for this front-wheel drive subcompact have been sold since it was launched last autumn.

2011 Euro plan Ford Fiesta finds favour with Canadians For years, Canadians have asked Ford: “Why can’t we buy European specification models here?” Ford’s answer is: “Yes, you now can!” Of course, Ford has sold Euro specification cars in North America in the past, but they were altered to suit North American tastes, with softer suspension, bigger engines and body style changes and lots of plastic on the inside. This formula has not been followed for the introduction of the European Ford Fiesta this year. Already sold worldwide, the North American Fiesta is built in Mexico on the same platform as the Mazda2 and sold in Canada in two different model trims—four-door sedan and a five–door hatch. Power comes from a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder 120-horsepower Duratec engine, mated to a five-speed manual transmission, or six-speed speed, dualclutch automatic transmission. This setup, together with twin independent variable valve camshafts, helps to delivery 6.8L/100 km city and 4.9L/100km hwy fuel economy. The Duratec engine’s efficiency is also improved by a 32-bit micro processor control module that makes adjustments to fuel, air, spark and gas.

Richmond’s residential benchmark Real Estate price overtakes Greater Vancouver Area Since April 2010, real estate prices have edged down slightly, with the number of property sales and property listings declining in the Greater Vancouver Area (GVA) market place. Housing prices have decreased 2.8-per cent compared to the alltime high reached in April, when the residential benchmark price was $593,419. In August the benchmark price decreased to $576,597. The benchmark price is an arithmetic estimated sale price of a typical property within each market. It represents all residential properties, i.e., detached, attached and apartments throughout the GVA. Richmond has performed particularly well compared to Greater Vancouver. The benchmark price for a detached property in Greater Vancouver in August 2010 was $795,076, an 8.5-per cent increase compared to August 2009.

The benchmark price for a detached property in Richmond in August 2010 was $900,046, a 20.7-per cent increase compared to August 2009. This was the largest percentage price increase in all of the GVA. The benchmark price for an attached property in Greater Vancouver was $489,511 in August 2010, a 6.6-per cent increase compared to August 2009. The benchmark price for an attached

property in Richmond was $511,077 in August 2010, a 10.3-per cent increase compared to August 2009. Canada remains an attractive destination for foreign buyers, a fact that continues to affect activity in the GVA. This is also applies to the Richmond marketplace, where moderate demand, low interest rates and a healthy but slowly declining supply of properties in the market-place are conditions that favour local, national and international buyers. With the GVA constantly ranked as one of the best cities and areas in the world to live, the long-term investment in real estate continues to appear very favourable. For real estate questions or enquiries, contact the Re/Max Westcoast TEAM DASH Richmond office at (604) 760-8609 or (604) 809-9626.

History and origin of Canadian Thanksgiving In Canada, Thanksgiving is our annual holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Various First Nations in Canada observed long-standing traditions celebrating the harvest and giving thanks for a successful bounty of crops long before the arrival of Europeans. The European history of Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to an English explorer, Martin Frobisher, who had been trying to find a northern passage to the Orient. He did not succeed but did establish a settlement in Northern America. In 1578, he held a formal ceremony, in what is now called Newfoundland, to give thanks for surviving the long journey. This is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving. Other settlers arrived and continued these ceremonies. Frobisher was later knighted and had an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean named after him—Frobisher Bay.

Thank you Airport Employees for all your Business! Your Kia Richmond Team

At the entire of the American Revolution in 1781, Americans who remained loyal to England moved to Canada where they brought the customs and practices of the American Thanksgiving to Canada. There are many similarities between the two Thanksgivings, such as the cornucopia and pumpkin pie. The first Thanksgiving Day after Canadian Confederation in 1867 was observed as a civic holiday on April 5, 1872, to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) from a serious illness. Eventually in 1879, Parliament declared November 6 a day of Thanksgiving and a national holiday. Over the years, many dates were used for Thanksgiving, the most popular was the third Monday in October. After World War I, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving were celebrated on the Monday of the week in which November 11th occurred. Ten years later, in 1931, the two days became separate holidays and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day. Finally, on January 31, 1957, Parliament proclaimed:winery “A day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed...to be observed on the second Monday in October.”
