More than 150 volunteers from the YVR community scoured the airport’s runways, taxiways and aprons last month last month as part of Vancouver Airport Authority’s 19th annual FOD Walk. The annual walk, which begins before sunrise at approximately 4:30am, is designed to increase awareness of the hazards of FOD—an aviation acronym that stands for Foreign Object Debris—and remove it from the airfield. FOD is a substance, debris or article that has the potential to cause damage to an aircraft. Examples include aircraft parts, rocks, broken pavement, zippers, luggage tags and screws. FOD costs the international aviation industry billions of dollars in direct and indirect costs and poses safety risks to aircraft due to the potential for damage, should a piece of debris get sucked into an engine or otherwise damage an aircraft. YVR has an ongoing program

targeting FOD. In addition to regular visual inspections, YVR utilizes a high-tech radar system to help detect and pinpoint objects on its runways, taxiways and aprons—day or night. Sponsors of the 2011 FOD walk were

Vancouver Airport Authority is the presenting sponsor of the Museum of Vancouver’s (MOV) new exhibition, Bhangra.me: Vancouver’s Bhangra Story. This unique exhibition, produced in partnership with the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC), started on May 5 and will run until October 23, 2011. Bhangra is a form of South Asian song and dance that tells a cultural story. Bhangra played a large role in creating an identity and community for Punjabi immigrants in Vancouver during the 1960s and 1970s, when men and women gathered in basements and community centres to perform, build friendships and nurture their

identity in Vancouver. The exhibit is interactive and chronicles Bhangra music, dance and politics in Vancouver. MOV has collected oral histories, artifacts, costumes, movies and images to create a colourful, cultural experience. Visitors can play instruments, learn about Bhangra’s connection to social issues, listen to local DJ-curated playlists and dance in the Performance Lounge. The Museum of Vancouver is located at 1100 Chestnut Street in the heart of Kitsilano. Tickets and more information is available at museumofvancouver.ca.

YVR and the 400-plus businesses that operate at the airport generate thousands of jobs, millions of dollars in taxes and billions of dollars in wages and gross domestic product (GDP) through day-to-day operations and construction projects. That’s according to a new Economic Impact Assessment Report, released last month at Vancouver Airport Authority’s Annual Public Meeting, which highlights how operations at YVR financially benefit the local, provincial and national economy. In 2010, YVR provided more than 23,600 direct jobs—or $1-billion in wages—for a direct impact of $1.9-billion to the national economy in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). Indirectly, YVR generates $5.3-billion in total GDP and $11.7-billion annually in total economic output to the Canadian economy. Also highlighted in the report

is the significance of new flights and routes—such as the recently announced China Southern Airlines service to Guangdong. A daily international flight creates about 186-person years of direct employment, while an all-cargo flight creates about 73 person-years of direct employment. For every direct job at YVR, there are 2.5 more indirect and induced jobs. The report underscores the importance of Vancouver Airport Authority’s aggressive plan to grow international traffic with the AsiaPacific Gateway strategy, which includes a goal to double international air service in the next five years; build connectivity by reducing connection times for passengers travelling through YVR en route to other destinations; and work with various levels of government and business partners to encourage traffic growth. The 2010 Economic Impact Report is available online at yvr.ca.

YVR set to celebrate 80 great years Your Airport & Sea Island Community Newspaper JUNE 2011 Vol. 18 | No. 6 Website: www.skytalkonline.com SkyTalk is owned and published monthly by Westco Marketing Ltd., for the travelling public and the more than 26,000 people who make up the airport community at Vancouver International Airport. July 22, 2011 marks Vancouver International Airport’s 80th anniversary, and plans are underway to mark this auspicious milestone. From its designation as a Class-A airport in the 1950s, to the jet-era in the 1960s, the first 747 run in the 1970s, Expo preparations in the 1980s, mass expansion of the 1990s and the Olympic Games in 2010, YVR has met demand and overcome unprecedented challenges to earn its reputation as world-class airport and key economic driver. In 1931, a single runway and small, wood-frame administration building served 1,072 passengers. Today, YVR welcomes almost 17-million passengers annually and serves 120 international destinations.

One constant, however, is the airport’s commitment to connecting B.C. to the world—a commitment that’s only made possible by the involvement of the 23,000plus employees who work at YVR. To celebrate its shared history, Vancouver Airport Authority is collecting memorable photos of YVR’s storied past for a photo gallery. Members of the airport community are invited to submit their favourite YVR photographic memory to promotions@yvr.ca. Please submit a digital photo, along with a brief caption (60 words or less) and your name. If your photo is an original print, please scan it to the highest resolution possible.

New faces of First Nations art earn YVR Art Foundation scholarships Five emerging First Nations artists were honoured by the YVR Art Foundation at a special ceremony at YVR on May 27, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship to develop their talents. Awarded annually, these scholarships ensure youth with artistic potential receive training and development in the fundamental skills of Northwest Coast art. The recipients will use the funds to develop their art through workshops, education programs and mentorship, ultimately creating works that are suitable for public display. This year’s winners and their planned projects are: • Cherish Alexander, Tsimshian; elaborate portrait mask with labret and shell inlay • James Harry, Squamish; steel water jet cut sculpture • Bryan Joe, Salish; traditional woven bark garment • Cody Lecoy, Penticton / Esquimalt; painting for display at YVR • J. Hjalmer Wenstob, Tla-o-qui-aht; totem featuring a kingfisher, his family crest The YVR Art Foundation was founded in 1994 by the Airport Authority to help foster the development of First Nations art in British Columbia.

Sustainability at forefront this month From sustainable transportation such as cycling to overall environmental awareness, YVR went even greener earlier month with Bike to Work Week (May 30 to June 5), followed by Environment Week (June 5 to 11). During Bike to Work Week, sponsored by the Airport Authority, employees were encouraged to commute to work via bicycle to burn calories instead of gas and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Cycling Survey Vancouver Airport Authority is conducting an online survey until June 30 that is designed to garner the feedback of cyclists to ensure that future infrastructure and route improvements best reflect the needs of users. The online survey is accessible at surveymonkey.com/yvrbike and is geared to cyclists who commute through/to, or visit, Sea Island, but also those interested in doing so in the future. Questions focus on route, parking and infrastructure improvements. For more information, email environment@yvr.ca.

YVR itself is home to one of the largest collections of Northwest Coast First Nations art in the world, including many pieces from previous scholarship winners. Update on YVR’s Observation Area

Community Corner

How observant are you? Summer runway

repairs to begin July 3 Just like your home, YVR’s runway system requires ongoing maintenance to keep it in top working condition. This is done throughout the year as a matter of course. However, for major projects, the south runway is temporarily closed at night during the summer months each year for the necessary repairs and upgrades that cannot be performed during regular daily maintenance. This year, the south runway will be closed nightly between 9pm and 7am from July 3 to August 27 to allow work crews to complete the three-year lighting upgrade project. In addition, runway signage upgrades will be carried out at this time.

While the south runway is closed, the north runway will be used for all take-offs and landings during these hours. Once work is completed, normal operations will resume. Although summer is the busiest time of the year for passenger traffic at YVR, it is also the best time of year for these upgrade projects. These projects require the coordinated effort of hundreds of Airport Authority employees and contractors within a short and intensive night-time period. A five-year summer runway repairs schedule is posted at yvr.ca, along with more information about this and other construction projects at YVR.

YVR Mounties named Police Team of the Year Did you know that YVR’s Public Observation Area turns two years old next month? This popular community space for viewing airfield activity at YVR—used every day by employees, passengers, aviation enthusiasts and community groups— needs an update and Vancouver Airport Authority wants your help for ideas.

Frequent visitors to the Observation Area may have noticed that the BC Explorer, a virtual fly-through of British Columbia, has been removed. It was on loan from the Provincial Government and has been returned. This leaves a small open space for something new. In addition, the touch-screen kiosk infor-

mation needs a refresh. Vancouver Airport Authority is asking for your input on what to put in this area that will engage and educate the community about life at YVR. Visit YVR’s blog at YVRConnections.com for some initial ideas, and please provide your input by Monday, June 20, 2011.

Richmond RCMP Mounties, Sgt. Dennis Wilson and Const. Vanessa Christopherson received their awards at the 9th annual 911 Awards held in Richmond on April 27. Two RCMP officers well known at YVR for keeping the airport and its Sea Island home safe for employees, passengers and visitors were recently awarded Police Team of the Year as part of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce 911 Awards. Richmond RCMP Sgt. Dennis Wilson and Const. Vanessa Christopherson were recognized for their strong communication skills and decisiveness related to an incident last July involving a distressed man who threatened to jump off the Arthur Laing Bridge. Upon receiving reports of the man on the bridge, Const. Christopherson was the first to arrive to the scene, followed shortly thereafter by Sgt. Wilson. When the man saw the RCMP officers, however, he quickly moved out of reach, thereby forcing the officers to communicate with him from approximately 4.5 metres away. Through calm and measured conversation, Sgt. Wilson was able to develop a trust with the man, while Const. Christopherson spoke via cell phone with a negotiator who was approximately 30 minutes away. With an extreme risk of the man jumping off the bridge, both officers worked diligently to prevent him from taking any sudden and

lethal action. The opportunity to save the man came when Sgt. Wilson offered him a cigarette; as the man crouched to shield himself from the wind to light it, Sgt. Wilson was able to take the troubled man into custody. “It’s not every day you save a man’s life,” said Staff Sgt. Murray MacAulay, who nominated the pair for the Police Team of the Year award. “The team’s action not only impacted the individual in need, but also his family… This is indicative of the kind of work that these officers do every day—they go the extra mile with a thought for the big picture.” More Accolades Two YVR customer-service employees were also recognized for their dedication and commitment recently as part of the Tourism Richmond Service Awards, designed to single out individuals and businesses that go above and beyond the call of duty. Lorne Stewart, a Vancouver Airport Authority employee who works in terminal operations, and Roshan Singh, who works for Vancouver Skycap, which provides porter service at YVR, were both recognized as nominees. Singh won in the Annual Extra Mile Award category.

Steveston welcomes Ships to Shore 2011 More than 37,000 people stepped back in time earlier this month to be a part of the Ships to Shore Steveston 2011 festival at Garry Point Park in Steveston. With hot and sunny weather, the weekend kicked off Friday evening with the arrival of the tall ships and the outdoor movie Peter Pan. From the YVR Community Stage, Mayor Malcolm Brodie officially welcomed the community to the event and walked the plank for a ribbon-cutting to open the new pier at Garry Point where the ships were docked. A mock gun battle between the brig Lady Washington and the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain wowed the crowds as smoke burst from the gun ports while these magnificent ships fired cannons and battled the tidal flow of the Fraser River. Both vessels were proudly flying Vancouver Canucks flags to the delight of all hockey fans looking on. Many took advantage of the opportunity to dress up as pirates (adults and children alike) and to board the ships for a tour, while others enjoyed the live music and dance performances on the YVR Community Stage. Amongst the crowds, the occasional (scripted) sword battle broke out between scallywags and gentlemen o’ fortune with photo opportunities at every turn. The Lady Washington was a clear favorite with the kids, recognized from her acting role in the film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

In its ongoing efforts to encourage air carriers to clarify their contractual commitments to passengers, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has created a Sample Tariff document to help air carriers provide the clearest possible language in their tariffs. A tariff is the contract of carriage between an air carrier and its passengers. The CTA’s Sample Tariff contains simplified language and an orderly structure covering provisions before, during and after travel. The sample provisions cover carriage on domestic and international scheduled passenger flights and cover 28 topics, ranging from fares and fees to flight delays, carriage of children, baggage handling, and service for persons with disabilities. By law, all air carriers are required to have tariffs and make them available to the public. The Agency enforces the application of tariffs and may hear complaints from passengers that a tariff provision is not being applied or is unreasonable or unjust. CTA staff developed the Sample Tariff in consultation with industry stakeholders to assist carriers in meeting their obligations and in a way that will assist Canadian and international air travellers understand their rights as passengers. “We applaud the Agency for this practical initiative,” said John McKenna, president and CEO of ATAC, the Air Transport Association of Canada. “The Sample Tariff will be a valuable resource for both new and existing air carriers. Professional basketball player Breanne Watson is just one of the many experienced leaders who provide training at Oval summer sport camps. Summer is just around the corner and there will be a number of summer sport camps offered at the Richmond Olympic Oval for young sport enthusiasts to develop their athletic skills, achieve excellence in their chosen sport and have fun in the process. Last year, more than 700 youth participated in sport programs at this world-class facility that provides a unique opportunity for success and inspiration. This summer, 49 camps will be offered for children and youth aged from six to sixteen, with a choice of sport camps ranging from hockey, basketball and soccer to biking, rowing and volleyball, to name only a few. “I’ve been a camp sports leader for the past three summers and have thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the Oval,” said Breanne Watson. “From the people I work with to the different fields at play, this complex offers the community value you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. If I didn’t work here, I’d be training here!” As with all the camp leaders, Watson comes with impressive credentials. She is a professional basketball player who has played on teams in Europe for the past five years. She is also a former member of the

Canadian National basketball team and was a leading forward for the University of Washington Basketball team from 2003 to 2007. Other camp leaders are multisport athletes who have played at the national and regional level in their field, so young people who want to try a new sport or are considering a competitive career in their chosen sport are provided with the best possible experience and foundation from experienced leaders. Katarina Tolentino, one of the aspiring young athletes who attended an Oval sport camp for volleyball, understands that dedication to the sport and having a world-class facility to train in are all part of the recipe for success. “I love training at the Oval,” said Tolentino. “It has now become part of my daily routine.” Leaders at Oval sport camps are committed to creating an environment that encourages youth to thrive, learn and develop sport skills while making friends and, most importantly, have fun. Jazz receives first of 15 Q400 NextGen aircraft Last month, Jazz took delivery of the first of 15 Canadian-made Bombardier Q400 NextGen aircraft. These new aircraft will be added to Jazz’s fleet over the coming months—with the final airplane arriving in July 2012—and will replace 15 50-seat regional jets. Jazz’s Q400 NextGen aircraft accommodates 74 passengers in a single cabin configuration that features all-leather seating. Jazz also has options for an additional 15 aircraft. Based on the list price for the Q400 NextGen aircraft, the order for the first 15 aircraft is valued at approximately $454-million US and could increase to $937-million US should all 15 options be converted to firm orders. A turboprop airliner, the Q400 NextGen is the most recent development in the evolution of the original Q400 aircraft. The aircraft features an enhanced cabin environment with the introduction of LED lighting, new ceiling panels, dished window sidewalls and larger overhead luggage bins. These features are combined with an Active Noise and Vibration Suppression (ANVS) system to provide a superior cabin experience. “The arrival of the new Bombardier Q400 NextGen aircraft to our fleet will strengthen our competitive position,” said Joseph Randell, president and chief executive officer, Jazz. “We continuously strive to improve our economics to provide better value to our stakeholders. Alaska Airlines ranks highest in carrier satisfaction study

Alaska Airlines ranked highest in airline customer satisfaction among traditional network carriers for the fourth consecutive year by J.D. Power and Associates in its 2011 North America Airline Satisfaction Study. The airline also topped J.D. Power and Associates’ annual segment rankings in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Alaska Airlines ranked highest in four of the study’s seven measures, including flight crew, boarding/deplaning/baggage, check-in and reservation. Alaska is the only U.S. carrier to offer a Baggage Service Guarantee, after implementing baggage service fees in 2009. The Alaska Baggage Service Guarantee states that if a passenger’s baggage is not at baggage claim within 20 minutes of the flight parking at the gate, the passenger is entitled to a $20 Discount Code for use on a future Alaska Airlines flight or 2,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan bonus miles. J.D. Power and Associates’ 2011 North America Airline Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 13,500 passengers who flew on a major North America carrier between July 2010 and April 2011. Aviation Industry News Despite turbulence, aerospace manufacturing industry poised for liftoff Canada adjusting to global The Canadian aerospace industry is poised for a recovery in production and revenues over the next two years, thanks to increased business and consumer spending on air travel. But the strong Canadian dollar will limit industry profitability, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Canadian Industrial Outlook: Canada’s Aerospace Product Manufacturing Industry – Spring 2011. “Air passenger and freight traffic have surpassed pre-recession levels in both domestic and international markets,” said Michael Burt, Conference Board of Canada associate director, industrial economic trends. “Demand for commercial and private jets should follow suit. New orders are coming in, which will translate into higher production and revenues.” This year, both production and rev-

enues will begin to recover following two years of sizeable declines. Production shrank by nine per cent in 2010 and is expected to pick up in the second half of this year, leading to a five per cent increase in 2012. Revenues will increase by 1.1 per cent in 2011, after falling by 26 per cent in the last two years. Pre-tax profits are expected to climb 27 per cent in 2011 to $385-million, thanks largely to cost savings from outsourcing and increased use of imported components. Profits will continue to grow as market conditions improve, but the strong Canadian dollar will keep margins thin. Because aircraft are priced in U.S. dollars, the strength of the loonie effectively reduces the sales price and related revenue in Canadian dollars for Canadian manufacturers. Thus, the profit margin will be at 2.7 per cent this year.

economic transformation

While Canada’s economy remains relatively well positioned, it is being buffeted by a significant transformation of the global economy, which is driven by a combination of secular trends and cyclical forces, according to Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney. “It is a time of great opportunity for Canada, but navigating the cross-currents in the global economy will require boldness and skill,” the Governor said in a speech last month to the Canadian Club of Ottawa. Robust growth in emerging market economies is the result of a combination of spectacular secular trends and powerful cyclical forces, the Governor said. Trends include the urbanization of emerging Asia and the accompanying formation of a massive new middle class. Cyclical forces, such as accommodative monetary policies, capital inflows and credit booms, are also contributing to strong domestic demand. In contrast, economic growth in advanced economies is listless and will be weighed down in coming years by the legacy of the financial crisis. The balance between these forces has changed and may change again. “Last fall, the consensus was that a faltering recovery in advanced economies was a greater risk than overheating in emerging

markets,” Governor Carney said. “Today, it is the opposite. Such reversals can be expected to continue.” The Governor identified three consequences for Canada, and discussed their implications: • Rapidly evolving global patterns of trade will require sustained efforts by Canadians to develop trade, technical and academic partnerships to improve market share in emerging markets. In tandem, Canadian business needs to improve its competitiveness, source new suppliers, and prepare to manage in a more volatile environment. • Dramatic changes in the scale, composition and direction of capital flows will have important implications for returns for Canadian investors, the cost of capital for our businesses, and the risks to our economy. • Sustained fiscal adjustment is required in most advanced economies. While Canada entered the crisis with a strong fiscal position, it is not fully insulated from the negative spillovers from other countries. The Governor said Canada’s economic flexibility, sound macroeconomic policy and commitment to openness will help address the current global challenges and opportunities.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has expanded its partnership with China Eastern Airlines to increase the number of eligible flights under the airlines’ Mileage Partnership Agreement and make it easier for customers to earn and redeem mileage. JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) members can now earn mileage on all flights operated by China Eastern on its domestic routes, including non-codeshare flights that were not applicable for mileage accumulation before, as well as on Japan-China routes. Consequently, JMB members can now accrue mileage on an additional 28 routes with 154 China Eastern-operated flights a week.

JAL and China Eastern first entered into a mileage agreement in February 2008 and have also been codeshare partners since 2002. Currently, JAL codeshares on China Eastern-operated flights plying 18 routes between China and Japan and on five Chinese domestic routes. Together with the comprehensive network of its partner airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair—fellow members in the airline alliance oneworld—the expanded partnership with China Eastern allows JAL to offer its customers travelling between Japan and China greater convenience and benefits.

COPA’s free flights for kids launch aviation careers Last month, the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) hosted its COPA For Kids flight event at Delta Heritage Airpark, located just east of the Boundary Bay Airport. The COPA For Kids Aviation Program provides a motivational aviation experience that includes a free in-flight demonstration by pilots to any youth aged seven to seventeen who wish to participate. More than 100 hundreds children registered for the event, many of whom were from inner city schools and would not otherwise have had the opportunity to be initiated into the magical world of flight. COPA pilots have flown more than 1,000 kids in the last 10 years and many of these young people who have had their first introduction to flying at the event have

gone on to get their pilot licences and are now flying others. Alex Doughty is one such COPA pilot. Doughty received a free flight several years ago with pilot, Gary Peare. Doughty subsequently completed high school graduation, obtained pilot and instructor ratings on land and sea planes and is now teaching others to fly. Other participating kids have gone on to obtain positions in other areas of the aviation industry, and the rest have had the enjoyment of an exhilarating experience of flight they will never forget. For more information, call (604) 3065245. To register a son or daughter for a free flight, visit copa5.wordpress.com and click on the COPA For Kids link.

Pulling together to save sight The sight of aircraft being pulled by tugs is a familiar one at YVR, but last month instead of being pulled by tugs an aircraft was pulled by close to 600 people, who pulled for a good cause. The national ORBIS Pull for Sight tour to help give visually impaired children in the developing world the opportunity to receive much needed eye care was kicked off at YVR. As the first stop on the tour, YVR hosted corporate teams in a competition to pull a 60-tonne Boeing 757 FedEx cargo plane 3.6 metres along the runway apron. A total of 20 teams competed, with Alex Huynh’s team claiming the title for the fastest pull and Fairchild Radio team named the most enthusiastic. ORBIS Canada will visit Vancouver again in July, this time with its DC-10 Eye Flying Hospital. The public is invited to come and tour the flying hospital, which will be located at Landmark Aviation, 4360 Agar Drive, Sea Island, on July 14 and 15, and learn more about how ORBIS prevents blindness and transforms lives. To reserve your spot, email daniella. binachi@orbis.org. To find out more about ORBIS and learn how you can get involved, visit orbiscanada.ca.

New adrenaline-pumping attraction at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park One of Vancouver’s top visitor locations, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, has unveiled its latest heart-stopping attraction. Located 91 metres above the Capilano River in North Vancouver, CLIFFWALK is an adrenaline-pumping series of narrow 50-centimetre wide walkways, split into ascending and descending staircases, bridges and viewing platforms. A signature u-shaped bridge cantilevered over the river canyon and glass-bottomed decks highlight the 213-metre journey and allow visitors to the attraction to feel as if they are walking on air while offering spectacular river, canyon and rainforest views. Each section of CLIFFWALK has been custom crafted and no two sections are alike. Educational signage with ecological information from the David Suzuki Foundation, referencing the interaction between water, granite, salmon, flora and

fauna, provides visitors with background on the previously unexplored environment. Fixed handrails are supported by steel beams cantilevered from 16 anchor points in the granite rock face of the canyon. The $4.5-million design and construction of CLIFFWALK emphasized minimizing the attraction’s ecological footprint and limiting overall environmental impact on the site. To protect the delicate natural environment, a dedicated team of builders handcrafted the bridge and walkway sections offsite, assembling them onsite with minimally invasive construction equipment. The majority of the attraction is constructed from steel, which is North America’s top recycled material. In addition, three other major material groups were used in the construction of CLIFFWALK: concrete and glass, which are recyclable materials, and timber, a renewable resource.

Due to its one-of-a-kind design and site constraints, each piece of CLIFFWALK has been custom built in an intricate stepby-step process of surveying, engineering and fabricating. Rock bolts were drilled into the cliff face to reinforce the rock and to secure CLIFFWALK to the 160-million year old granite that forms the canyon walls. More than 40 tons of steel was constructed using a first-of-its-kind technique totally relying upon 3D digital information to establish the geometry for each piece of CLIFFWALK. The walkways are held together by 1,825 bolts and the hand railings are made of 365 linear metres of stainless steel. CLIFFWALK can safely support a combined mass of more than 45,359 kilograms when operating at peak operational capacity. For more information, visit capbridge. com.

Mexico deemed a bastion of sustainable tourism

The ruins at Tulum, the only city the Mayan civilization ever built on the coast, are just one of the many spectacular sites to be found in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The coastal paradise, Huatulco in southern Mexico, is the first destination in the Americas to receive EarthCheck’s Gold certification. The EarthCheck Program was developed by the Australian government-funded Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre, and is the largest environmental management system in use by the travel and tourism industry for the benchmarking and certification of their operational practices. Huatulco received the certification for meeting the rigorous sustainable tourism requirements of EarthCheck across a range of aspects such as environmental legislation, energy usage, water conservation, wastewater management, biodiversity, and waste reduction. Huatulco has gained EarthCheck certification for the previous five consecutive years. As a result of the certification, Huatulco will be one of 13 global destinations featured on a new program on the Discovery Channel in 2012. The documentary will be broadcast to more than

200-million people over the next two years. “In Mexico alone, EarthCheck member organizations have saved a combined total of 26,349,880 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions since data started being collected in 2003,” said EarthCheck Ambassador, Gustavo Ramos Fumagalli. “They have also reduced water consumption, dramatically reducing pressure on natural resources in a country that is familiar with the unforgiving effects of drought.” To meet Earth Check’s strict requirements, Huatulco constructed new water management infrastructure including: • 17 kilometres of storm protection channels; • 23 re-lift stations for sewage treatment and management; and • Harvesting structures which collect storm water runoff. Last month, Mexico was also recognized by the Rainforest Alliance in New York for the forestry practices of the Mexican government and the achievements in sustainable tourism in the Mayakoba region of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Would early aviators have enjoyed Aviation History the snacks and in-flight entertainment? By Jack Schofield

in wireless technology that allowed the cabin attendant to swipe my credit card to pay for a packet of chips without interference to the aircraft’s navigational systems. Despite the impressive technology, an examination of the packet of chips revealed an expiry date that was two years past due. Thankfully, my digestive tract, having suffered worse time warps than prehistoric chips, couldn’t tell the difference between 2008 and 2011. The aircraft landed safely at YVR and I never did receive answers to the nagging questions I mentally presented to those early aviators. While I had just experienced the thrill of modern, manned flight, the airline informed me that, unfortunately, my baggage had not.

Douglas Corrigan (1907–1995) was an American aviator nicknamed “Wrong Way” in 1938 after a navigational compass error caused him to fly from New York to Ireland instead of his filed flight plan of New York to Long Beach, California. Photo: 2002 National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution. I had read everything in the seat pocket and was getting bored with the flight. I cast my eyes around for something to do and spotted the T-shirt on the lady across the aisle—a T-shirt with a slogan printed across the front. The topography on the shirt’s terrain made reading difficult, but I persevered, “I am still missing my ex-husband, but my aim is getting better,” it read. We were flying in an Air Canada 721 now on long final for YVR. The T-shirt lady feigned sleep, while other sleepless passengers, including me, relieved their fatigue from the long flight—originating from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport—by constantly fidgeting. As I gazed around the cabin of this beautifully furnished aircraft; the individual TV sets in each passenger’s seat-back; the marvel of a moving map display allowing each of the 200 passengers to know the aircraft’s exact position and ETA; disturbing questions started to nag. The nagging increased as I gazed up the aisle to the bullet-proof door protecting the pilots on the flight deck, and the recollection of the recent security procedures involving either a full body grope or a revealing electronic body scan. The other pertinent realization was that the contrail from an aircraft at 34,000 is now deemed to be responsible for much of the world’s global warming. My nagging thoughts took on the image of a Frenchman all dressed up like a barn swallow early one morning in the 1800s, when, with feathered arms outstretched, he threw himself off a cliff to prove that man could fly. Had he known it would all come to a moving map display at each seat and global warming, would he have shed his feathered experiment in favour of a few more puffs on his Gauloise and a glass of red at a sidewalk cafe in the Latin Quarter? We can surmise that some of the early pioneers of flight held their breath on more than one occasion as they charted aviation achievements. Aviators such as Frenchman Louis Blériot as he crossed the English Channel, completing the first flight in a heavier-than-air craft across a large body of water; Charles Lindbergh on his solo trip across the Atlantic peering through a periscope in lieu of a windshield; and undoubtedly British aviators Alcock and Brown were more than fidgety on their early flight from Newfoundland into an Irish peat bog. Nagging questions continued to consume my thoughts. Would American transcontinental aviator Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan have chosen the right way had he, along with those other early aviators, known the masses would inherit the miracle of flight and become bored with the experience? Would those pioneers have wanted a selection of six in-flight movies or would five have been enough? I marvelled at the most recent advances

Jack Schofield has written several books on coastal aviation and has adapted his first two books to a screenplay for TV.

Louis Blériot (July 1, 1872 –August 2, 1936) was a French inventor, engineer and aviator. In 1909, he completed the first flight across a large body of water in a heavier-than-air craft, when he crossed the English Channel. He also is credited as the first person to make a working monoplane.

British aviators Alcock and Brown made the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919, flying a modified WWI Vickers Vimy bomber from St. John’s Newfoundland to County Galway, Ireland. A statue of Alcock and Brown can be seen at London’s Heathrow Airport.

IATA reveals Checkpoint of the Future The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unveiled the first mock-up of the Checkpoint of the Future, which is designed to improve the passengers’ airport experience. “We spend $7.4-billion a year to keep aviation secure,” said Giovanni Bisignani,

IATA’s director general and CEO. “But our passengers only see hassle. Passengers should be able to get from curb to boarding gate with dignity. That means without stopping, stripping or unpacking, and certainly not groping. That is the mission for the Checkpoint of the Future. We must

make coordinated investments for civilized flying.” At the heart of the Checkpoint of the Future concept are three points: • Strengthened security by focusing resources where risk is greatest; • Supporting this risk-based approach by integrating passenger information into the checkpoint process; and • Maximizing throughput for the vast majority of travellers who are deemed to be low risk with no compromise on security levels. “Today’s checkpoint was designed four decades ago to stop hijackers carrying metal weapons,” said Bisignani. “Since then, we have grafted on more complex procedures to meet emerging threats. We are more secure, but it is time to rethink everything. We need a process that responds to today’s threat. It must amalgamate intelligence based on passenger information and new technology. That means moving from a system that looks for bad objects, to one that can find bad people.” The Checkpoint of the Future is aimed at ending the one-size-fits-all approach to airport security. Instead, based on a biometric identifier in the passport or other travel document, passengers will be directed to one of three lanes: Known Traveller, Normal or Enhanced Security. Known Travellers (trusted travellers) will have expedited access. Normal screening will be applied to the majority of trav-

Using new technologies will also allow passengers to pass through security without having to remove clothes or unpack belongings. Currently, 19 governments are working to define standards for a Checkpoint of the Future. The Checkpoint of the Future and the use of biometrics in security and passenger processing will be key points of discus-

sion at Future Travel Experience 2011, hosted by YVR at The Westin Bayshore, September 7-9, 2011.

Canadians urged to carry proof of medical insurance for European travel Canadians travelling to Europe this summer are urged to carry proof of supplemental health insurance as various governments now require visitors to have adequate medical coverage while in their respective countries. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), Canadian insurance is almost certainly not valid outside Canada, so it is essential that travellers obtain supplementary travel insurance—health, life, disability, driving, vehicle and trip cancellation before leaving Canada. According to David Hartman, president of the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada (THIA), in addition to Cuba, which last year announced it would require visitors to show proof of medical insurance when entering the country, more nations in Europe are also requiring such proof. DFAIT website lists Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine as specifically requiring Canadians citizens to be prepared—in some cases required—to show proof of medical coverage while visiting those countries. In Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Estonia, the minimum medical coverage required is 30,000 euros (approximately $42,500 Canadian), while Lithuania stipulates that health insurance is mandatory for all non-European Union citizens and visitors unable to demonstrate sufficient proof of medical coverage must purchase short term insurance at the border. Similarly, the government of the Ukraine requires all visitors to obtain mandatory health insurance from a state-supported company at their point of entry. According to Hartman, small amounts provinces pay for out-of-country health services would not meet those coverage requirements, although supplemental, private travel insurance plans available in Canada cover, at minimum, $1-million of medical emergency and repatriation expenses. Because of changing border requirements and controls, Canadians travelling abroad should check the DFAIT website at voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/menu-eng.asp and click on the countries are planning to visit to determine their medical insurance requirements, if any.

Excellent Wines

Richmond’s largest selection of Artisan Beers

is a dark-skinned grape grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce powerful red wines..

I

t is called Syrah in its country of origin, France, as well as in the rest of Europe, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Uruguay and most of the U.S.

The name Shiraz became popular for this grape variety in Australia, where it has long been established as the most grown dark-skinned variety. In Australia it was also commonly called Hermitage up to the late 1980s, but since, like Champagne, that name is also a French protected designation of origin, this naming practice caused a problem in some export markets and was dropped. The name Shiraz for this grape variety is also commonly used in Canada and South Africa. Whether sold as Syrah or Shiraz, these wines enjoy great popularity. Syrah is the primary (sometimes sole) grape variety used to make the famous Rhône wines of Côte Rotie and Hermitage and in fact also forms the backbone structure of most Rhône blends, including Chateauneuf du Pape.

Syrah forms intense wines, with deep violet, nearly black color, chewy texture and richness, and often alcoholic strength, with aromas that tend to be more spicy than fruity. The Jackson-Triggs winery in the B.C. Okanagan produced the award-winning 2004 Proprietors Grand Reserve Shiraz, which won the Rosemount Estate Trophy for the world’s best Syrah. Shiraz wines are characterized by firm tannins, a medium to full body, and the rich round flavours of black cherry, blackberry, plum, bell pepper, black pepper, clove, licorice, dark chocolate and smoked meat. Shiraz will pair well with grilled meats or veggies, wild game, richly flavoured red meats, beef stew and meat lover’s pizza.

2011 Honda CR-Z Hybrid Sports Coupe By Tony Whitney

CarTalk CarTalk

Some vehicles, often for inexplicable reasons, become what are described by enthusiasts as “cult cars.” It may be the fact that they never had any serious market rivals; were endowed with ground-breaking technology or perhaps that they simply clicked with a fickle public and became fashionable must-haves, despite boasting no standout qualities. The Honda CR-X, which was sold in North America from 1987 until 1991, was (and still is) justifiably a cult car and thousands of examples around the continent are still lovingly preserved and restored, often by owners who were still using training wheels when the original car hit the streets. After its sad demise, the car was replaced by the Del Sol, which never came close to winning the kind of affection enthusiasts had for the CR-X. As the years went by, rumours persisted of a new CR-X, but Honda never responded, other than by showing the occasional concept car at auto shows around the world. But, for 2011, the beloved CR-X has at last got itself a replacement in the form of the all-new CR-Z—a sportster that cleverly captures the spirit of the old model yet packs in all kinds of state-of-the-art technology. It’s very much a car for the times we live in. Nobody could doubt where the inspiration came from for the Honda CR-Z. I would guess that the stylists worked at their computers and clay models with an old CR-X sitting close by on the studio floor—a practice that’s endured for years in vehicle design operations the world over. The car has the same stubby look, makes no pretence about being anything but a two-seater sports car and even has the big hatchback with divided glass panels. There are many benefits that go along with opting for a two-seater design for a car like this. The doors are very wide, making it easy to get in and out of. The interior has scads of stowage space, including deep recesses behind the two seats and ahead of the actual cargo area. A cover flips down over these bins when needed (they’re deep enough to hold small cameras and even compact laptops), and there’s also a retracting cargo cover for the load floor. Try and squeeze in a couple of rear seats (and it’s been attempted with cars like this) and you lose all that cargo space. For two people on a fairly long trip, there’s more than enough room in this sports car—even for quite large hard cases. This practicality comes in one of the most attractively-styled packages to appear in some time. The CR-Z looks great from every angle and really turns heads on the street. It looks fast, elegant and purposeful

and despite its basic stubbiness it seems surprisingly sleek from a side view. Rear vision isn’t the car’s strong point, but the door mirrors are a decent size and once the driver gets to rely on them, rather than with glances over the shoulder, all is well. Most interesting of all, Honda decided to make the CR-Z the world’s first sports hybrid and squeeze a gasoline/electric drivetrain into this little car. This was a bold move, because Honda could all too easily have fitted the car with one of its excellent Civic Si powerplants and still come up with a very worthwhile product. Instead, Honda is counting on the fact that there are lots of buyers out there, especially younger ones, who’d like a sports car, but wish to make some kind of contribution to a greener world. This vehicle gives them the chance to “put their money where their mouth is.” Power comes from a 1.5-litre VTEC four-cylinder engine working in unison with Honda’s much-praised lightweight Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) 10-kilowatt

system to endow the CR-Z with both power and fuel efficiency. Horsepower is given as 122, which seems fine for a small, lightweight, automobile. There are three drive modes—sport, normal and economy—and they function exactly as promised. Using economy mode only, I drove a CR-Z for a week on short trips around the Lower Mainland and it cost just $18 to top it up when it had to go back to Honda’s Richmond regional office. The instrument panel is a highly modernistic piece of styling with flashy blue 3-D lighting, but everything’s in the right place and owner familiarity would take care of any ergonomic aspects that don’t become familiar on a brief test. Driving the CR-Z is great fun and the car has enough pep for quite exciting bursts of speed when needed. It also cruises with impressive refinement and provides handling is very good. Best of all, Honda has rather miraculously kept the basic price way down to $23,490 with a manual transmission, so

just about anyone with a job can get behind the wheel of one of these, which hasn’t always been the case in the hybrid market. The Honda CR-Z with CVT transmission can return a skimpy 5.3-litres/100 km combined rating—one of the lowest in the industry. This is a very inexpensive car to operate by any standards. It was a gutsy move by Honda to replace the iconic CR-X with a hybrid, but replace it they did and the result is a car with charm, performance, looks and a very modest environmental footprint. Not much more can be asked of a new model as

the second decade of the 21st century gets underway. Tony Whitney has been a journalist and broadcaster for three decades, specializing in automobiles and the auto industry. CarTalk Ford to triple production capacity of electrified vehicles

Ford C-MAX Hybrid. Ford Motor Company is tripling production capacity of its electrified vehicle lineup through 2013, further boosting volumes of its all-new C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, which begin production next year. Ford is electrifying platforms—versus a single vehicle—to offer customers the most choice. Five electrified vehicles are planned for North America by 2012, including the Transit Connect Electric, on sale now, and Focus Electric this year in the U.S and 2012 in Canada. The C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and C-MAX Hybrid will be followed by another next-generation hybrid in 2012. Today, Ford sells approximately 35,000 electrified vehicles a year, led by the Fusion Hybrid midsize sedan and Escape Hybrid SUV. Ford will grow its electrified vehicle production capacity to more than 100,000 annually by 2013, thanks to growing consumer appetites for green vehicles. The new Ford C-MAX five-passenger vehicle, which is the base for the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, is leaving European dealer lots at twice the rate of last year’s model. More than 100,000 of these new vehicles have been sold in Europe since its launch in late 2010, and Ford is already finding new ways to produce more European C-MAX models than originally expected at its Valencia, Spain plant. Ford’s plan to invest in even more capacity for its five-passenger C-MAX electrified models for North America replaces an earlier plan of introducing the gasoline-engine-powered seven-passenger C-MAX multi-activity vehicle. This also marks the first time North American customers will have the choice of a dedicated body style for a range of Ford electrified vehicles. The new Ford C-MAX Hybrid is targeted to deliver better kilometers per litre than Fusion Hybrid and is the first of two new Ford Hybrids to use lithium ion battery technology. Lithium-ion batteries are up to 50 per cent lighter and 25 per cent smaller than current nickel-metal-hydride batteries and increase the amount of energy available to extend the vehicle’s driving distance and boost fuel economy. This all-new hybrid also will travel at a higher all-electric speed than Fusion Hybrid’s 75 kilometres per hour. The C-MAX Energi, featuring a 240volt charging system is being engineered to deliver more overall driving range than any other plug-in or extended range electric vehicle. It is also targeted to achieve AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) status.
