In 2012, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) continued to expand its routes and services, connecting B.C. residents to the rest of the world.

In June, YVR became the first North American airport to offer a direct flight to China’s interior with the arrival of Sichuan Airlines and its Vancouver to Chengdu route.

The most spirited airline arrival in 2012 was most certainly Virgin Atlantic’s first flight to Canada in more than a decade. The Airport Authority welcomed CEO Sir Richard Branson—and his truly unique brand of British humor—to kick off the inaugural Virgin Atlantic seasonal service from YVR to London.

For more than 20 years, the Airport Authority has worked hard to provide travellers of all abilities a positive experience while travelling through YVR. All airport facilities have been designed to be barrier-free, including universal check-in counters, accessible washrooms and directional signage.

In keeping with this commitment, the Airport Authority recently partnered with Spinal Cord Injury BC (SCI BC) to facilitate a series of video travel tutorials

designed to help travellers with spinal cord injury or mobility impairment get the most out of their travel experiences.

Available on YouTube, each of the nine, minute-long videos focuses on a different aspect of the curb-to-cabin airport experience. From arrival and checkin to security screening and the logistics of transferring, with or without assistance, to an aircraft aisle chair, every step of the airport experience is covered.

Vancouver Airport Authority has installed two new interactive exhibits in YVR’s Public Observation Area, located on Level 4 of the Domestic Terminal, above the Food Court.

On your next visit to the Observation Area, look for a new touch-screen kiosk that allows visitors to explore all of YVR’s non-stop destinations. An interactive map highlights each of the airport’s 100-plus destinations, noting each location’s distance in kilometres from YVR and average flight time, airspeed and elevation. The map can be sorted by air carrier or region, and allows browsers to pinch and zoom in on their location of choice. Beautiful photographs of YVR’s destinations rounds out the experience and is a great way to learn more about YVR’s connections from B.C. to the world.

are lined with information panels, or reader rails. These rails provide snapshots of the airport’s history on Sea Island, the various types of aircraft that fly to and from YVR, and the role YVR plays in the provincial economy.

Visitors whose language of choice is not English can now use their mobile devices to scan new QR codes on the panels, which link to this content in French and Simplified Chinese.

During YVR’s current winter peak period, Air Canada and Air New Zealand have increased frequencies to Australia and New Zealand to help make these southern sun destinations more accessible.

A significant part of YVR’s 10-year gateway strategy is to expand its services to AsiaPacific and be the gateway of choice to connect to Asia-Pacific.

YVR has added two Chinese carriers in the past two years (China Southern and Sichuan Airlines), making it home to more Chinese carriers than any other airport in North America.

In the past 10 years, YVR has more than doubled its offering of departing flights to China during the peak summer season, during which 40 departing flights are scheduled each week.

Online booking, shuttle service and lowest prices at jetSet parking Travellers looking for the best on-airport parking rates and service should keep an eye out for striking bright orange signs this month, as jetSet parking launches at YVR on January 15.

The newest concept in airport parking, jetSet offers the lowest-priced self-parking and best value of all on-airport parking options at YVR. Come early February, an online booking system will offer customers the chance to reserve a spot in the lot as easily as reserving a seat on a plane, and earn an immediate discount on the cost of parking.

YVR’s former long-term

parking lot will be home to jetSet’s operations, with free, 24-hour shuttle service connecting travellers from the secure parking lot to the terminal and back.

Customers waiting for the next shuttle in the weatherproofed bus shelter can check in right at the lot using one of a number of self-serve checkin kiosks.

Vanderlande Industries will also introduce a new baggagesorting technology, which will integrate seamlessly with the Airport Authority’s systems and easily accommodate future passenger growth. This phased project will break ground this month and is slated for completion by early 2016.

tem upgrade is one of several key projects designed to keep YVR competitive and the gateway of choice for airlines and travellers—particularly for the fastgrowing Asian market.

Also underway are upgrades to the original portions of the 1968 Domestic Terminal and runway safety enhancements.

Travel tips were collected from a panel of expert travellers with physical disabilities, who have collectively explored more than 80 countries spanning every continent.

As a proud sponsor of Spinal Cord Injury BC, the Airport Authority provided logistical support and some video resources for the day-long shoot, including coordination with partners WestJet and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

Support for the video project is one part of the Airport Authority’s ongoing commitment to SCI BC’s peer program; experiential tours for new wheelchair travellers will also be offered at YVR throughout the year, with the next tour scheduled for mid-January.

Preparing for snow begins in summer Although most Metro Vancouver residents spend the majority of their year preparing for and managing lashings of rain, YVR spends a significant amount of time preparing for the possibility of snow.

Beginning each summer, Airport Authority staff begins preparations for the winter season by reviewing and revising plans, preparing specialized equipment, ordering supplies and briefing staff and contractors in order to ensure YVR is ready for any inclement weather.

On December 19, a nearrecord one-day snowfall occurred at YVR which tasked

staff and partners with enacting the snow-preparedness plan.

During a large snowfall like the one experienced on December 19, YVR uses up to 80 pieces of snow-removal equipment to keep runways, taxiways and aprons safe for aircraft and passengers. Many different pieces of equipment are involved in this process.

Five snow blowers are used to blow snow off the runways and taxiways, blowing a combined 25,000 tons of snow each hour. Four “all-in-one” trucks help sweep and plough the airport’s runways and taxiways.

airport’s taxiways clear of snow with 6.7-metre-wide high-speed brooms. Two other trucks are equipped with 7.9-metre highspeed snow plows. Finally, three trucks are equipped to spread environmentally friendly solid and liquid pavement de-icing solutions to ensure that YVR’s

runways and taxiways don’t freeze over.

While the operations team and partners worked to ensure the safety and security for aircraft and passengers on the airfield, staff, partners and Green Coat Volunteers worked to minimize the disruptions

and promote a festive atmosphere in the terminal. Some travellers experienced delays on December 19 due to the unexpected magnitude of the snowfall. The patience of these passengers was appreciated by Airport Authority staff and partners who worked diligently to

help get them to their destinations in time for the holidays.

In 2013, YVR will continue to revise its snow preparedness plans in anticipation of the next snowfall. But more importantly, YVR is also considering removing Let it Snow from its holiday in-terminal music selection!

YVR for Kids contributes to Skate with Santa event

Cheryl Hendrickson, chair of YVR for Kids; and Wayne Duzita, chair Richmond Christmas Fund, tried their skills on the ice at last month’s Minoru Arena Skate for Santa event.

December is a busy time for Santa—in fact, the busiest. But in the midst of preparing for his annual gift-giving trip around the globe, Santa found time to deliver presents on December 16 to more than 150 children from families at Minoru Arena’s Skate with Santa event in Richmond.

The Skate with Santa event was made possible by a generous donation from YVR for Kids. The attendees were families who are registered with the Richmond Christmas Fund, a program that provides assistance to low-income residents during the holiday season.

The Skate with Santa event,

which is held each year, affords children 12 and under the opportunity to strap on a pair of skates—some for the first time— and take to the ice with Jolly Old Saint Nick. The Minoru Arena is turned into a winter wonderland with decorations, holiday lights and falling snow.

A $5,000 contribution from

YVR for Kids helped pay for ice time, skates, a grocery voucher and special treats such as hot chocolate, cookies and a surprise gift bag for each family member to take home.

Never camera shy, Santa welcomed photos, allowing the children to leave with yet another souvenir from the event.

B.C. Government announces provincial aviation strategy Opening and expanding international markets for British Columbia’s goods and services is one of the pillars of the BC Jobs Plan and as such, the government of B.C. has launched a Connecting with the World Aviation Strategy designed to help grow the B.C. economy, create jobs and increase investment in the province.

Announced last month, the B.C. government’s aviation strategy is considered critical to making the province more competitive in the global aviation market and attracting a growing share of Asia Pacific passenger and cargo business.

There are 38 certified airports in B.C. serving the passenger and cargo transportation needs of the province.

In total, more than 300 airports, heliports and water aerodromes, together with airlines, aerospace companies and their supporting industries, make up B.C.’s aviation sector. The sector promotes local economies by increasing access to remote job sites for B.C. workers and supporting access to local tourist destinations. It also plays a key role in every region of the province by supporting emergency services, such as medevac

and firefighting.

Every community in B.C. is expected to benefit from new job opportunities in the aviation sector, expanded air services and increased access to international markets. This would increase B.C.’s competitiveness in the international marketplace and open up new markets, which will bring more business into the province and affect every sector of the economy, including tourism, oil, natural gas, mining and international education, to name a few.

Earlier this year, the B.C. government eliminated the jet fuel tax for international flights, providing greater financial certainty for airlines, allowing them to invest in expansion and saving thousands of dollars per day on long-haul flights. This change increases B.C.’s competitiveness and brings the province in line with the neighbouring jurisdictions of Alberta, Washington and California, which do not have a comparable fuel tax.

One of the major employers at Langley Regional Airport, where the new aviation strategy was announced, is Vector Aerospace, which employs more than 100 employees who provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services for helicopters. Vector

has announced plans to expand its facilities and add another 80 jobs to its workforce as a result of the announcement.

The B.C. government has invested $65.5-million to improve 36 airports throughout the province in the past decade,

Those travelling by bike to or from YVR will find marked cycling lanes adjacent to traffic lanes on YVR’s major roadways, as well as off-cycling routes connecting major thoroughfares on Sea Island.

Public bike racks can be found on Arrivals Level 2, close to the International Terminal, at both the Templeton and Sea Island Canada Line stations, and at the South Terminal Building.

And because bikes are allowed on Canada Line, cyclists can easily head to YVR for a day of exploration.

One of the best year-round cycling trips on Sea Island is the route along Ferguson Road to Iona Beach Regional Park. The park features a four-kilometre jetty ideal for cycling, along with sandy beaches and marshy trails that are home to thousands of migratory birds.

YVR’s reputation as a transportation hub is expanding to include bicycles, with the recent announcement of the Airport Authority’s win as one of the region’s most bikefriendly businesses.

Awarded annually by HUB, Metro Vancouver’s largest cycling coalition, the awards celebrate businesses that encourage employees and customers to cycle, by providing commuting facilities, incentives and education programs.

The Airport Authority earned Runner Up status in the Most Bike Friendly Workplace category, with BC Hydro garnering top honours.

Other 2012 award winners included ING DIRECT and Harbour Centre Building Ltd. in the Most Bike Friendly Building category.

HUB recognized the Airport Authority’s promotion of yearround cycling transportation, citing its Green Commuter and Wellness incentive programs,

Quitting smoking is a common New Year’s resolution and while it is not easy, it is the single best thing you can do to improve your health and quality of life.

Don’t be discouraged if you have tried once and failed, a person who tries to quit several times is more likely to stop smoking for the long term than someone who has only tried once to quit. The more times you try, the more likely you are to succeed.

Benefits of quitting Your body starts repairing itself as soon as your last cigarette is stubbed out.

Within just 20 minutes, your blood pressure and heart rate decrease to normal levels. Within

a few hours, your risk of having a stroke drops significantly, by about 40 per cent. Within eight hours, the levels of carbon monoxide in your body decrease, while levels of oxygen increase to normal. After one day, your risk of a heart attack decreases.

Other benefits of quitting smoking include being able to taste and smell food better, having better breath, having younger-looking skin and not smelling smoke on your clothes and in your home.

Strategies for quitting There are many ways to quit smoking—from the “cold turkey” method to a system where you gradually taper off smoking.

Each person is unique and different strategies work for different people. However, researchers know that the most effective quitting strategies are ones that address both the physical and psychological aspects of nicotine dependence. Therefore, using strategies to help with the physical dependence (smoking-cessation medications) as well as the psychological dependence (support groups or counselling) will improve your chances of quitting for the long term.

Smoking-cessation medications In Canada, three types of medications are widely available and proven to help stop smoking. These include nicotine replacement (patch, gum, inhaler, or lozenge), bupropion and varenicline. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about which medications may be appropriate for you. These medications are usually only needed for about three months.

Support groups and counselling Group programs usually involve meeting small groups of people who are all trying to quit smoking. Check that it is offered or distributed by a credible organization such as a national or provincial voluntary health agency, public health department, community health centre, hospital or licensed health care provider.

Individual counselling programs can range from brief advice and counselling offered by a health care professional to intensive individual counselling available through specialty clinics for smoking cessation.

Tips for quitting Develop an action plan.

Make a list of the important benefits of quitting. List the situations in which you smoke and the reasons you smoke. List fun

and healthy activities to replace smoking and be ready to use these when you feel the urge to smoke.

Avoid smoking triggers. If you associate coffee with smoking, try drinking tea or water, instead. If you usually smoke at parties, find other ways to socialize until you feel confident about facing these situations.

Don’t carry matches, a lighter or cigarettes.

Each day, delay lighting your first cigarette by one hour. After the first cigarette, when you have your next craving, delay for another 15 minutes or half an hour. By delaying, you take control.

Conference Board report concludes profit growth grounded in Canada’s aerospace industry

George Casey, president and CEO of Vantage Airport Group, has announced a change in leadership at the company that operates Cyprus’s two largest airports, Pafos and Larnaka International Airports.

Alfred van der Meer will step down as CEO of Hermes Airports Limited at the end of February 2013 and the position will be taken up by Craig Richmond, currently CEO of Vantage Airports U.K., which owns Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

A slowdown in new orders in early 2012 and the ongoing global economic uncertainty pushed profit levels down in Canada’s aerospace product manufacturing industry in 2012 and will do so again in 2013, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Aerospace Product Industry: Industrial Outlook Autumn 2012.

The aerospace outlook mirrors global economic trends, forecasting modest growth this year and next, followed by progressive improvement in the later years of the five-year forecast.

Aerospace industry profits have been on a turbulent ride since the 2008-09 recession.

After reaching a recent high of $710-million in 2010, profits fell in 2011 and are projected to show a dip again for 2012 and 2013.

At the end of next year, profits are expected to be slightly more than $500-million—a decline of 30 per cent since 2010.

All-inclusive airfare advertising laws now in effect The federal government has mandated all-inclusive airfare advertising under amendments to the Air Transportation Regulations.

The new rules require air service advertisers to display the total price a consumer must pay in order to fly, including all taxes, fees and charges.

The amendments apply to the price of air services advertised in any media to the public, for travel within or originating in Canada.

“We are protecting Canadian air travellers by helping them see clearly and up front the full cost of air tickets, so they can make informed travel choices,” said Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “In addition to benefitting consumers by ensuring transparent advertising,

these regulations will promote fair competition between all advertisers.”

The Canadian Transportation Agency will work with air price advertisers and provide direction to ensure early compliance with the regulations and overall success in the implementation of the new regulations.

The agency promises to use a proactive educational approach to ensure that air price advertisers are aware of their responsibility to comply as early as possible with the regulations and reach out to associations representing the air travel industry, as well as provincial government organizations dealing with travel agencies.

“The Harper government takes consumer protection very seriously,” said Lebel. “Offenders can be fined up to $25,000.”

Last month, Air Canada unveiled its new leisure airline, Air Canada rouge.

The unveiling marked a milestone in the transformation of Canada’s flag carrier to compete in the growing leisure travel sector.

Air Canada rouge will begin service in July 2013 and introduce new routes to Venice, Italy and Edinburgh, Scotland not currently operated by Air Canada.

Additionally, existing Air Canada flights operated in cooperation with Air Canada Vacations to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica

and Costa Rica will be operated

Flights to all destinations will be served in the carrier’s inaugural 2013 summer schedule, which will depart from Air Canada’s main hub at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, offering customers seamless connections with Air Canada, Air Canada Express and its Star Alliance partner flights.

This has not been an easy decision for the organizing committee to make, but as the event date drew closer it became obvious that turnout would not allow the symposium to be financially

Coastal flying boats and B.C.’s Ocean Falls mill

In a previous issue of SkyTalk, I recounted the history associated with one of the four paintings displayed on the mezzanine at YVR’s Airport South.

Here is another history associated with one of those paintings, which includes some of B.C.’s industrial history and the vital part played in that saga by Vancouver Airport and the coastal airlines operating from there.

The painting at Airport South depicts a Mallard flying boat in West Coast Air livery landing at an unnamed destination to pick up passengers bound for Vancouver. The artist did not have personal experience with the various destinations of the Mallard during its 26 years of service on the coast, but his imagination created what coastal pilots will find reminiscent of the Cousins Inlet approach into one of the prime destinations in its day—Ocean Falls.

Here a concrete slipway and ramp with a terminal building was built to handle this amphibious craft on its regular daily stop.

Interestingly, when I was researching information to write the Pacific Coastal Airlines, Daryl Smith story, published under the title Journey Log, I discovered that Smith had helped build the concrete slipway and ramp at Ocean Falls, operating a bulldozer during onsite construction.

The pulp mill and community of Ocean Falls was a vital stop for those flying boats from 1946 to 1970—before this coastal community descended from what had been the largest pulp mill in the province, with a community of 3,500 residents, to what is now a near-ghost town.

The Ocean Falls town site was first envisioned in 1903, when it was determined that a large block of hydro-electric power could be generated from the waters tumbling into the inlet from the 213-metre elevation of Link Lake above the proposed

pulp mill site.

By 1912, the pulp mill was in production and the town site boasted 250 inhabitants.

Transportation was provided by steamship service from Vancouver, which became a tedious experience for most of the workmen and their families, and a painfully slow means of transport for the mill operators.

When airplanes started to arrive, the owners of the pulp mill company Pacific Mills, along with many of its employees and residents of Ocean Falls, helped to finance a little airline of their own called Pioneer Airways. This airline was run by a quite famous, local pilot named Bill McCluskey.

At the time, the Hoffars Company was building a nice little, five-place Boeing-designed flying boat called the C204— Thunderbird—in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour.

Pioneer Airways ordered two of these pusher configuration aircraft and the little upstart airline was launched.

The history of this airline is a story unto itself, but for the purposes of this account it can be said that the Ocean Falls community became enthusiastic backers of coastal aviation, and the mill owners of the day were great contributors to the growth of B.C.’s flying industry.

By 1945, B.C. airlines initiated the use of the Mallard flying boats and developed scheduled service from Prince Rupert to Vancouver.

the 1958 centennial year.

Grumman flying boats were passed on to Pacific Western Airlines, then to West Coast Air Services and then to AirBC in its history of linking the coastal

communities of this province and though these fine aircraft are no longer in service in B.C., thanks to a pulp mill, this aircraft type played an important role in coastal aviation history.

Users can also control the camera remotely using a smartphone app.

Nature as Antidote With urbanization rising steadily—today more than half the world’s population lives in cities, compared to less than 40 per cent in 1990—more people will retreat to nature to escape the pressures, noise, pollution, traffic and other stressors of the city.

We’ll also see this urge manifest in other ways, from an embrace of natural, organic elements in décor to ever more nature-themed entertainment programming.

Political Vacations Affluent travellers are seek-

ing new kinds of status trips, as embodied by Political Tours of the U.K., which offers clients “current affairs at first hand.” This includes a tour of Northern Ireland led by BBC correspondents and trips to hot spots including Georgia, North Korea, Bosnia, Kosovo and Ethiopia, many curated by political experts with insights into the region.

River Cruising River cruising is slated to make a splash in the travel industry. In 2012, for instance, British cruise brands Voyages of Discovery and Hebridean Island Cruises both introduced river cruises. Other companies are adding river cruise itineraries worldwide, as well as new ships.

Set Jetting New Zealand has seen a 50 per cent spike in tourist visits since The Lord of the Rings debuted in 2001; now The Hobbit is expected to bring even more travellers to the Pacific nation.

Long popular among film fanatics, “set jetting” will become popular, especially as more sites start to tout their Hollywood connections. As part of the promotion for 50 years of James Bond films, the stars made appearances at set locations around the U.K. in 2012. In 2013, Life of Pi (filmed in India) and The Lone Ranger (the American West) are expected to help draw visitors to filming locales.

Shopping Hotels In Middle Eastern countries including the UAE, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain, megamalls with hotels in them are fueling a tourism recovery, after the Arab Spring of 2011 took a toll. A Sheraton will open in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates in 2013, and the upcoming Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi will house seven hotels.

Virgin Atlantic reveals short-haul U.K. domestic program Last month, Virgin Atlantic outlined plans to launch a domestic flying program within the United Kingdom, starting this spring.

The airline will be adding 24 domestic flights a day to its existing long-haul network. The investment in short-haul routes will cre-

ate more than 150 new jobs.

operations on flights to and from Scotland; from April 2013, the airline will operate six round-trip flights a day between Heathrow and Edinburgh, and three daily round-trip flights between Heathrow and Aberdeen.

The airline will also use three of its existing Heathrow slots to complement the new Scottish routes, with three daily roundtrip services between Heathrow and Manchester from March 31, 2013.

The schedule of new flights is timed to maximize connections for passengers travelling onwards from London across Virgin Atlantic’s global network.

The timings will also give the most attractive offering to passengers travelling direct between London and the U.K. regions, with flights spread at key points throughout the day (including morning arrivals into Heathrow to give business travellers a full day in the capital, and an early morning departure from London to Edinburgh for business visits to the Scottish capital).

The new chapter in Virgin Atlantic’s history will see the airline increase capacity on the routes previously operated by bmi, flying almost one-million passengers per year domestically on four Airbus 320 aircraft.

The airline will provide a bespoke Virgin Atlantic product and service on all of its short-haul flights and has signed a letter of intent with Aer Lingus as a wet lease partner to supply the crew and Airbus narrow-body aircraft required, which will be fully Virgin branded.

American Samoa. American Samoa is a longer trek than Hawaii, but the distance rewards the visitor with some of the most stunning, untouched beauty of the Pacific and a national park that even the most ardent park system fans won’t have checked off their list yet. Flights run from Honolulu to Pago Pago on lovely Tutuila, with waterfalls, fishing villages and spectacular beaches nearby. While there, take a quick flight on Inter Island Air to nearby Ofu in the Manu’a Islands, with shining, palm-fringed white sand flanked by shark-tooth– shaped mountains. This may be U.S. territory, but it’s some of the purest Polynesia you’ll find anywhere.

Eastern Sierra, California.

Just beyond Yosemite lies the secret California dream. The Eastern Sierra is the overlooked flank of the Sierra Nevada range, with other-worldly natural attractions and surprises, and far fewer visitors. Just follow the scenic US Route 395 as it connects wonders like the Travertine hot spring in Bridgeport, the Gold Rush ghost town of Bodie, Mono Lake’s bizarre calcified tufa towers, or the surreal Devils Postpile National Monument’s curtain of basalt columns made from rivers of molten lava.

Northern Maine, ME. Maine isn’t only lobster rolls, lighthouses and rocky shoreline.

The woodsy interior, on the top half of the Maine “thumb” reaching north to the Canada border, makes for a wilderness adventure with moose, white-water rafting, and epic hiking.
