Vino Volo opened its first Canadian locations at YVR in November 2012. In the United States, Vino Volo is known for its fine wine line-up and tapasstyle plates. In Vancouver, a touch of Canadiana has been added to Vino Volo’s offerings to entice customers—including three types of beer. General manager Susan Magen previously worked at Vino Volo in the SeattleTacoma International Airport.

Magen and her team quickly found that the first Canadian location required some unique customizations. Each Vino Volo location offers four core flights: World Value Reds, California Kings, Shades of White and Sommelier Series. However, the wines that appear in the flights are all sourced locally and changed seasonally, so that means a strong selection of B.C. wines. See VINO VOLO page 3

Last month, the Airport Authority began a shared photo gallery of images collected from across Canada taken in-flight. These images can be viewed on the temporary walls of the Domestic Terminal’s A and B Piers, which are currently undergoing renovation, as well as live online at yvr.ca/ YVRCANADA. The image collection continues to grow, now featuring more than 100 inflight images taken by travellers high

In 2008, the Vancouver Airport Authority adopted an integrated policy for safety, security and environment.

Vancouver Airport Authority’s environmental department is looking for public feedback as it updates two of its key plans this year. Both the Environmental Management Plan and the Noise Management Plan help guide the Airport Authority’s main objective to build, operate and maintain a safe, secure and environmentally sustainable airport for employees and customers alike. In the coming weeks, the public is invited to provide feedback on sustainability at YVR via a survey available at yvr.ca. Results gathered from surveys will help shape the new five-year Environmental and Noise Management plans. In April 2013, the environment department will present its findings to the two multistakeholder committees that help oversee and review the Airport Authority’s environ-

mental performance. The Environmental Advisory Committee represents diverse interests including community and environmental groups, industry, government and the Musqueam Indian Band and will provide feedback on the Environmental Management Plan. The Aeronautical Noise Management Committee, comprised of citizen representatives, municipal government, the Musqueam Indian Band, airlines, NAV CANADA and Transport Canada will oversee development of the Noise Management Plan. During the late spring and summer 2013, the Airport Authority will incorporate feedback into draft reports. Final plans will outline the Airport Authority’s direction for environmental and noise management initiatives between 2014 and 2018. More information on these

plans and the Airport Authority’s approach to sustainability can be found in the Community & Environment section of the airport’s website, yvr.ca.

Vino Volo Even some of the food offerings at the YVR locations are local; for example, guests can enjoy cured meats from Cioffi’s, a Commercial Drive institution. And Vino Volo’s latest addition may be the most Canadian twist yet. “We know that Canadians love their beer,” said Magen. “So we’re proud to pour three excellent craft beers.” While wine is still its staple beverage, the addition of beer has enticed employees, skiers waiting for the coach to Whistler, meeters-and-greeters and travellers to sip one of Canada’s favourite beverages.” Magen and her team are also

The Canadian Blood Services Bloodmobile collects up to 8,000 donations every year.

You can help save a life later this month at YVR when the airport welcomes a very special guest in the form of the Bloodmobile from Canadian Blood Services. The Bloodmobile will be parked just outside of International Arrivals on Tuesday, March 19, from 8:30am to 2:45pm, collecting donations on behalf of Canadian Blood Services. The blood donation process takes about one hour. Participants can register with a piece of identification, have their blood tested for iron levels using a fingertip sample and then answer a series of questions to determine eligibility before donating. After the donation has been collected, participants relax with a snack in the mobile clinic’s

refreshment area. Drop-in appointments are limited, so if you want to donate make sure you register beforehand, either online at blood. ca, on the phone by calling 1-888-2-DONATE (366283). Canadian Blood Services Bloodmobile travels around the Metro Vancouver area and collects up to 8,000 donations every year. The Bloodmobile is a selfcontained donor clinic on wheels that has four collection stations where you can donate blood in a relaxed environment. It can take many donations to save one life. Canadian Blood Services estimates that almost every minute of every day there is someone in Canada who needs blood, so register now and join others at the Bloodmobile on March 19, where you can save lives by giving blood.

Continued from page 1 experts at pairing food offerings with beverages. She suggests these favourite pairings: “The Salmon Rolls are one of Vino Volo’s most popular food choices in all locations, and Vancouver is no exception. Because the salmon has such a strong flavour, I like pairing it with a Pinot Noir or Syrah to bring out the smokiness. Most people choose a white with fish, so a red pairing is unexpected. “The Mac and Cheese is exceptional comfort food. Because it’s finished with decadent truffle oil, I recommend an Italian red to complement the flavours. “The Phillips Hop Circle

IPA is hop, hop, hop, hoppy. Expect it to be bitter. It’s an ideal pairing with our charcuterie plate because the hoppiness of the IPA cuts through the richness of the meats.” Vino Volo recently made some changes to its wine flights and will continue to do so through the summer. Look for a flight of Rosé in late spring, and perhaps a Serious Syrahs flight in late summer. Don’t miss a sip or snack at one of Vino Volo’s two YVR locations: before security on International Arrivals (Level 2), and after security in the U.S. Departures area.

Q&A with para-alpine skier Braydon Luscombe Braydon Luscombe is a member of the Canadian ParaAlpine Skiing Team who has been sponsored by Vancouver Airport Authority since 2009. We like to periodically check in on Braydon, a voracious competitor, bright spirit and future representative of Team Canada at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Tell us a bit about your sport and why you love it. I love the sport of Para Alpine skiing simply for the competition aspect. I have always been a competitive person. I like to be a part of the growing sport and para-alpine skiing is a sport that isn’t too well-known yet. In the years since the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics, para-alpine skiing has grown a lot and is starting to be recognized more. How is your season going? This is my first season in full gear with the World Cup team. It has been a big difference and I have to make some changes to adjust to the different level of competition. It has been a great journey so far and I am loving it. Completing in World Championships and consistently placing in the top 10 or just above has given me good confidence

Community then drive past Lake Geneva and into the mountains to get to Saas Fee. Are you looking forward to Sochi? What are your goals while you’re there? I’m looking forward to both the World Cup Finals and the Paralympic Games in Sochi a lot. I had a few solid finishes at World Championships in La Molina, Spain, and I’m hoping to carry that over into World Cup Finals in Sochi.

Braydon Luscombe finished in the top 10 three times in his first para-alpine skiing World Cup season (2012). He had his leg amputated after contracting necrotizing fasciitis (flesh-eating disease) as a child and competes in the standing category.

you have a favourite place to visit? Travelling is one of the best parts of being on the team. Visiting so many different neat places, experiencing all the dif-

ferent cultures. The airports are quite an experience. You definitely learn to use your resources when you don’t speak the language and you need to find the information desk or find your

lost luggage. It’s one of the most difficult parts of travelling but one that you learn the most from. Definitely my favourite place to visit so far has been Saas Fee in Switzerland. We fly into Zurich

After all that globetrotting, it must be nice to come home [Duncan, B.C.]. What is the best part about arriving back in Canada? Two things: Being with family and friends again after being away for roughly a month at a time and all the while struggling with internet connections. And of course your own bed. It’s the best feeling after being in hotel rooms for such long periods of time and the single, hard mattress beds. The best sleeps of my life are the first and second nights at home after a long trip. To learn about Braydon Luscombe and the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team, visit alpinecanada.org.

BCAC launches 75th anniversary activities February 23 marked national aviation day and, for a province whose recent history has been significantly shaped by air service, British Columbia had much to celebrate. The British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) marked the day by launching its 75th anniversary photo contest to collect a visual history of the industry throughout the province. “From the pioneers of bush flying who opened up the vast resources of the north to the country’s leading aerospace training facility at BCIT, the prosperity of this province owes a great deal to aviation,” said Mark Duncan, chair of the BCAC. “Helicopters have opened up timber stands and built our power grids, medevac services get people to critical hospital care, floatplanes fly mail and food into remote communities and the country’s largest air freight fleet operates out of Kelowna. This is a truly multifaceted industry with lots of stories to tell.” Back in 1938, aviation was a new idea with plenty of potential, particularly in a province dominated by mountainous terrain and seemingly inaccessible resources. Trans Canada Airlines had just begun service the year before with its inaugural flight from Vancouver to Seattle, and passenger jets were still the stuff of science fiction. To build on the momentum of the fledgling industry, 39 civic leaders formed the BC Aviation Council, the first of its kind in Canada. Its inaugural AGM was attended

by Canada’s first Minister of Transport, C.D. Howe, in the city of Nelson. It is not just the highly visible airline, airport, firefighting and floatplane operations that have contributed to the province’s growth. High-tech industries that support aviation and aerospace have also found a home in B.C. and employ thousands of people across the province. These include companies that build aircraft and aircraft parts, and provide maintenance, overhaul and specialized services. “The province as we know it today wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of aviation and aerospace,” said Duncan. “To celebrate BCAC’s 75th anniversary and the importance of our industry, we’re call-

ing on the public to break open the shoe boxes and dust off old albums. We need your help to collect aviation photos taken anytime over the last 75 years from all corners of the province. They will play a feature role in the BCAC’s anniversary celebrations this year.” Photographs and accompanying stories can be uploaded to the BCAC photo contest Facebook page. Details can be found via Twitter @bcac1938 or on the BCAC website at bcaviationcouncil.org. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite photo, which will determine the winners, who will receive tickets to the Silver Wings Awards gala in October 2013 as well as other aviation-related prizes.

Opera fans are in for a treat this month when Vancouver Opera (VO) remounts its spectacular production of The Magic Flute. Sponsored by Vancouver Airport Authority, this original performance reinterprets Mozart’s fantastic narrative with the spirit of the First Peoples of British Columbia. Set on the rocky shores and in the ancient rainforests of the Pacific Coast, the opera artfully blends Mozart’s beguiling music with indigenous mythology and visually stunning design. VO originally conceived of this production in 2004, with the close guidance of First People’s Cultural Council and an advisory group of First Nations artists.

The remounted production runs March 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 17. 2013. The Airport Authority has long been a proud supporter of First Nations culture through its community investment program— YVR’s spectacular in-terminal collection of Northwest Coast First Nations artwork and the work of The YVR Art Foundation—to foster the development of emerging First Nations artists. Sir Richard Branson signs on to Buffet’s Giving Pledge

Chinese New Year in Vancouver

Sir Richard Branson (centre) was welcomed by Larry Berg, Vancouver Airport president and CEO and B.C. premier Christy Clark in May 2012 as Virgin began direct Vancouver-London summer seasonal service, which returns to YVR for the 2013 summer season.

Sir Richard Branson, who founded his company in 1971 with a record store in London, has transformed these humble beginnings into the Virgin Group, a multinational corporation with interests in air travel, media and space tourism. However, Sir Richard’s latest

initiative has nothing to do with acquiring businesses but instead giving half of his estimated $4-billion dollar fortune away. Sir Richard has joined the Giving Pledge initiative founded by Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates in 2010 to convince the world’s richest people

to donate at least half of their wealth to charity. “‘Stuff’ really is not what brings happiness. Family, friends, good health and the satisfaction that comes from making a positive difference are what really matters,” said Sir Richard and his wife Joan in a letter.

The biggest holiday of the year for the Chinese community arrived on February 10, 2013, when the Year of the Snake was ushered in with festivities at YVR and throughout B.C. Festivities in the terminal included a traditional lion dance in which performers, dressed in oversized costumes and accompanied by drums, mimicked the movements of this revered animal as they plucked heads of lettuce and red envelopes from YVR storefronts. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck

and fortune for the business, and the performers are rewarded with the red envelope and its contents. According to Chinese

zodiac theory, the snake symbol is highly associated with intelligence, charm, balance, and elegance.

IATA reports 2012 best in history of aviation safety The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported that the 2012 global accident rate for Western-built jets was the lowest in aviation history. The jet accident rate (measured in hull losses per million flights of Western-built jets) was 0.20, the equivalent of one accident every five-million flights.

“Each day approximately 100,000 flights arrive safely at their destination,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, manufacturers and safety regulators work together to ensure every flight is as safe as possible. Their dedication and cooperation has made air travel remarkably safe.

“The first commercial airline flight took place on 1 January 1914. Since then, the airline industry has made continuous improvement in safety its top priority,” said Tyler. This monthly Health & Wellness column features medical, dental and health information from a variety of trained professionals. Send us a question that you would like answered on any of these areas of health and wellness.

Travel Immunization: Know before you go When considering a vacation abroad, flight itineraries, hotel accommodations and places to see and visit usually top the planning list. However, maintaining health and ensuring one’s safety should never take a backseat in the trip planning process. Before departure, you should learn about the health risks in the country or countries you plan to visit, your own risk of disease and the steps you can take to prevent illness and injury. It’s always wise to invest in protecting your health before venturing abroad. If you feel ill, delay your departure in order to avoid travelling on planes and ships. The most common illness to strike Canadian tourists in developing countries is traveller’s diarrhea (TD), an acute diarrheal illness that usually lasts two or three days. It can be caused by any of a number of bacteria, which are usually different from home-based varieties and therefore pose a temporary challenge to the immune system. TD can often be prevented or self-treated with medications. Check with your health care professional or travel clinic to obtain advice and medication for self-treatment. Immunizations are among the most important and effective ways to prevent certain travelrelated infections. Canadians should have already been vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b, pertussis, and polio as part of their routine immunizations schedule. A booster shot may be required for some of these, especially the diphtheria-tetanus (DT) shot, since it provides protection for 10 years—one DT shot covers both diseases. Talk to your doctor or travel clinic to see if you need a booster shot.

Travel vaccines to consider Flu vaccine. Airplanes are extremely infectious places for respiratory diseases, because the same air is continually recirculated. The flu vaccine should be administered annually in the fall to receive full protection. Influenza is transmitted during the cold seasons in both the northern and southern hemispheres and year-round at the equator. Typhoid vaccine. Travellers to any country with under-developed water treatment systems and sanitation should get this vaccine, particularly when travel is off tourist routes or involves budget accommodations. Typhoid vaccine lasts about seven years. Yellow fever vaccine. This is recommended when travelling to large areas of Africa and South America. In addition, the World Health Organization says it is one of the only vaccines required by health officials to cross international borders of certain countries. Many coun-

Q: Since I don’t know too much about “ tinnitus” (ringing in the ear), I would like to know if there is any treatment for it and how exactly is it formed. My boyfriend has tinnitus (it is because he has Bell’s Palsy and it could also be because he produces music and is constantly exposed to loud music). I would like to find out more about this correlation and how it works. A: Tinnitus, (a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear) is a common

tries in Central Africa and South America require yellow fever vaccination certificates for any entry, while others demand them from people who have been in yellow fever zones. Yellow fever has a high mortality rate among those who acquire the infection. Yellow fever vaccine lasts about 10 years. Meningococcal (bacterial) meningitis vaccine. This very dangerous, contagious disease is passed by coughing or sneezing. Those going to Mecca in Saudi Arabia require the vaccine for entry. Travellers should talk with a travel health professional to determine their individual risk. Japanese encephalitis vaccine. Like malaria and yellow fever, this is transmitted by a mosquito bite, in this case, it’s an evening-biting mosquito found only rural areas of South and Southeast Asia. This virus causes symptoms similar to meningitis and is sometimes fatal or leaves victims with severe neurological effects. It is widespread in East Asia, especially around late

problem and can be quite annoying. Tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying condition and, in most cases, is not usually due to anything serious. It is important, however, to find out what is the underlying cause, since it could be a result of age-related hearing loss, ear damage, blood vessel disorders, or medication(s), among other causes. Management of tinnitus depends on the underlying cause. It is important to consult your doctor and have an ear exam, hearing tests, and to determine if you need to be

summer, and vaccination is recommended for anyone planning to spend more than a month in affected areas. The vaccine is protective for about three years. European tick-borne encephalitis. This is caused by a virus carried by ticks and has symptoms that are similar to the Japanese version, but often more severe. Russia and the rest of the former Soviet Union is the homeland of this disease, but it can be found in other parts of Europe in the summer months. One should be vaccinated if planning a long stay during summer months. Measures to prevent tick bites—using repellents that contain 20 per cent or more DEET on exposed skin—will also help to reduce the risk of this serious viral disease. Rabies vaccine. There is a safe and very effective vaccine that can be used to prevent rabies. Unfortunately, rabies immune globulin is often not available in the developing world, putting the exposed person at serious risk. The vaccine is recommended for

referred to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist. long-stay travellers, especially children who often relate to small animals. E. coli vaccine. This is an oral immunization that is also effective against cholera. It provides protection for three months against the ETEC strain of E. coli, the most frequent cause of TD. However, since E. coli is responsible for less than half of the cases of TD, carrying an antibiotic regimen for self-treatment of TD and observing preventative measures against TD is still important. Malaria protection. Unfortunately, a malaria vaccine does not yet exist, but there are several antimalarial medications recommended for the prevention of the disease. Depending on the medication, malaria prophylactic medications should be taken for several weeks or even the day before exposure, during the travel period, and for one to four weeks after returning home. Since no antimalarial pill is 100 per cent effective, measures must be taken to prevent infection from

the night-biting mosquito that transmits malaria. Using DEETcontaining insect repellents, permethrin-impregnated bed nets, and air-conditioned or screened accommodation, and wearing trousers and long-sleeved shirts after dark will reduce the risk of this potentially fatal infection. Before you go Travellers should visit their doctor or a travel clinic at least two months before departure. This will give time for the vaccines to take effect. Make sure to tell your health care professional about any pre-existing medical conditions or the possibility of pregnancy at the time of the visit or during travel. After you return If you fall ill in the year after returning home from travels, particularly within the first two months, it is important that you tell your doctor that you have been abroad. If you have been in very underdeveloped areas for a long time, you should also consider getting screened for tuberculosis even if you have no symptoms. If this disease is caught early during the latent phase, treatment is likely to be easier. This Russian Ilyushin IL-76TD freighter aircraft was spotted at YVR by Emmanuel Lorenzo on February 27, 2013. The aircraft was parked near the Air Canada hangar, which gave Lorenzo, an employee of Pacific Avionics at Airport South, the opportunity to take the photos. The Ilyushin IL-76 is a multi-purpose fourengined airlifter that has seen extensive service as a commercial freighter for ramp-delivered

cargo, especially oversized or heavy items unable to be carried by other aircraft. Intended as a replacement for the Russian Antonov-12, the IL-76 was designed for delivering heavy machinery to remote, poorly serviced areas of the Soviet Union. The aircraft shown here is owned by the Volga-Dnepr Group, a world leader in the unique, oversize and heavy cargo transport market.

Air Canada expands Lowest Price Guarantee

Air Canada is expanding its Lowest Price Guarantee to give its customers added assurance they are getting the lowest price available online within a 24-hour period when they book flights on Air Canada. The guarantee applies to any destination Air Canada serves for tickets bought in Canada on Air Canada’s website. Here is how it works: It is available to all consumers and travel agencies purchasing tickets in Canada for Canadian

originating flights on Air Canada, Air Canada rouge or Air Canada Express flights operated by Sky Regional or Jazz Aviation LP through aircanada.com If, within 24 hours of purchase, the customer finds a cheaper price for the same flight, itinerary and fare brand on another Canadian online travel retailer, Air Canada will provide a travel credit for $50 plus the price difference, which can be applied toward future travel. Air Canada’s policy of allowing

customers to cancel any flight and receive a full refund within 24 hours of booking remains in effect. Customers and travel agencies who find a lower price can easily notify Air Canada on-line and are not required to buy the lower fare. Air Canada frequent flyers take off with Altitude Air Canada’s re-branded top tier frequent flyer recognition program, “Altitude”, is now in effect. Specifically designed to recognize and reward Air Canada’s most frequent flyers, Altitude offers members a wide range of travel privileges, rewards and additional status levels. Members reach Air Canada Altitude status based on the number of Altitude Qualifying Miles or Altitude Qualifying Segments earned on eligible flights operated by Air Canada and its Star Alliance partners. Improved benefits include enhanced priority travel services

such as a complimentary checked baggage allowance, higher upgrade priority for higher status members, exclusive partner offers and new incentives such as tier status gifts, as well as the creation of a new dedicated website altitude.aircanada.com. Air Canada Altitude members remain Aeroplan members identified by their Aeroplan Number. They also benefit from Air Canada’s partnership with Aeroplan, Canada’s premier coalition loyalty program offering a wide range of ways to earn and redeem Aeroplan Miles with more than 150 partners.

Previously referred to as Status Miles, Altitude Qualifying Miles are earned and redeemed on eligible Air Canada and Star Alliance member airlines flights and are used for tracking towards a higher Altitude status. Altitude Qualifying Miles earned on eligible flights are also redeemable Aeroplan Miles, which can be used for Flight Rewards to more than 1,000 destinations worldwide. For more details, visit altitude.aircanada.com. Members will continue to book flights at aircanada.com and can use their Aeroplan Miles to book flight rewards at aeroplan.com.

Located at the crossroads of Hollybridge Way and the future River Road extension, River Park Place, at

the entrance to the Oval Village shopping district, represents the standard of what can only be described as The New Luxury. Phase 1 Tower will be 15 storeys tall and will offer sophisticated, efficient homes in a spectacular setting. Naturally, features in these homes can only be described as upscale—exactly what you’d expect from developer Intracorp and its long-standing involvement in Metro Vancouver’s residential development community. Ownership at River Park Place promises all the comforts of a complete subur-

ban home in a fresh urban context with amenities to match—a tai chi pavilion, lush gardens, music rooms, basketball court, a private family banquet room for larger gatherings and much more, all at the heart of an inspiring new riverfront neighbourhood. Combined with the City of Richmond’s commitment to building a vibrant urban hub filled with new restaurants, shops and boutiques, River Park Place is designed in response to the needs of savvy homebuyers who are looking for excellent value and a vibrant lifestyle.

Additionally, commuting will consist of a short five-minute jaunt for those employed on Sea Island and at the Vancouver International Airport. public. Also, if you register online before April 6, 2013, you will automatically be entered into The New Luxury Contest for a chance to win a brand new 2013 Range Rover Evoque! Visit www.RiverParkPlaceLiving.ca today or speak with one of their sales representative for more information about this exciting new residential community by calling 604-282-7838. WestJet and Air France expand codeshare agreement WestJet and Air France have expanded their code-share agreement, allowing Air France to offer its customers 10 additional Canadian destinations operated by WestJet. Starting on March 12, 2013, travellers will be able to use Air France’s website, call centre or a travel agency to book flights that will include some travel onboard WestJet aircraft. This is the ninth code-share agreement for WestJet which also has 21 interline relationships with other international airlines. The Air France flight code is now

on select WestJet flights connecting from Toronto to Vancouver and will be used on several other destinations across Canada. “With this enhanced partnership we are delighted to offer at the same time a larger choice of Canadian destinations to our customers flying from Europe, Asia and AfricaMiddle East to Canada and excellent connections to Air France global network to Canadian customers,” said Dominique Patry, WestJet vice-president, international affairs and alliances.

WestJet to reduce carry-on baggage allowance

Effective April 4, 2013, WestJet is updating the number of carry-on pieces guests are permitted to bring on board from two to one, plus one personal item. The carry-on item (for example, a suitcase, backpack or bag) must be no larger than 21 inches by 9 inches by 15 inches, and it must fit in the WestJet sizing devices located in airports across the airline’s network. If the item does not fit, it must be checked at the boarding gate and picked up upon arrival at the baggage carousel. Personal items include small purses, laptop bags or mobility or child restraint devices. For parents travelling with infants, a diaper bag is permit-

ted over and above the carry-on allowance. “Updating our baggage allowance has many benefits,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet executive vice-president, sales, marketing and guest experience. “Fewer carry-on items will mean more room for everyone’s baggage, and faster and more efficient boarding. This, in turn, helps us stay on time. It will also create a more consistent experience for guests travelling between WestJet and WestJet Encore beginning later this spring, as well as for guests connecting to and from flights offered by our codeshare and interline partners, most of whom have already adopted this standard.”

WestJet has introduced three new fare bundles—Econo, Flex, and Plus—which provides travellers with variations in seat spacing, ticket flexibility and costs and offers a range to suit all budgets. The Econo package will be aimed at the price-sensitive traveller and there will be additional fees to change or cancel a flight. The Flex package will offer more flexibility, such as access to emergency rows and advanced boarding but there will also be charges for itinerary changes or cancellations. Aimed at the business traveller, Plus will allow free change of flights, refund tick-

ets to original form of payment, include on-board snacks, meals and alcoholic drinks and, for the first time, Plus passengers will be allowed to board first. WestJet has begun reconfiguring its Boeing 737 aircraft to offer a 91-centimetre spacing on 24 seats at the front of the aircraft for Plus package passengers. WestJet’s executive vice president and chief financial officer Vito Culmone said he expects the bundles to add a “very, very significant” $50-million to $80-million annual contribution to the company’s earnings. planned for the program called “Optimal Flight” that will continue through 2013. Each flight is being powered in part by sustainable aviation biofuel sourced from used cooking oil. “The art of the possible comes to life with Optimal Flight,” said Mike Caflisch, director of airspace programs for Boeing’s digital aviation customer solutions. “It combines all of Boeing’s current flight efficiency projects in a single program to demonstrate the

Hydrogen-powered spy plane completes second flight

The Boeing Phantom Eye is a high altitude, long endurance unmanned hydrogen-powered spy plane.

Boeing’s liquid hydrogenpowered Phantom Eye unmanned airborne system completed its second flight in February 2013, demonstrating capabilities that will allow it to perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions for up to four days without refuelling. Boeing is self-funding development of the environmentally

responsible Phantom Eye, which generates only water as a by-product of its propulsion system. Following the first flight in 2012, Boeing upgraded the aircraft’s software and hardware, including the landing gear. Phantom Eye climbed above an altitude of 2,438 metres and remained aloft for 66 minutes at a cruising speed of 62 knots

before executing a picture-perfect landing. The aircraft exceeded what it achieved during its first flight when it flew at an altitude of 1,243 feet and remained aloft for 28 minutes. The Phantom Eye demonstrator is capable of carrying a 204-kilogram payload while operating for up to four days at altitudes of close to 20,000 metres.

The passing of a cultural aviation legacy

Aviation History

By Jack Schofield T. TOMMY 1933 - 2013

Passed into history today in New York, of natural causes. Wearing helmet and goggles as he did in life, and with his few remaining friends at bedside.

So popular was this deceased aviator’s nickname—Tailspin Tommy—the New York coroner was unable to determine his real family name. During the golden age of flight, the career of this one-time great ‘aviation pioneer’ was followed assiduously by millions of young would-be pilots and his adventures were chronicled in Big Little Books—small, compact books designed with a captioned illustration opposite each page of text. Predeceased by everyone who knew his last name and, sadly, by his girlfriend, who was simply known as Betty, Tailspin Tommy was laid to rest by his aging author Hal Forrest and an unnamed representative of the Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin—a company itself laid to rest by the advent of digital publishing. Another elderly man who was observed smiling through the funeral ceremony was thought to be Zack Mosley, creator of Tommy Tailspin’s principal competitor, the handsome Smilin’ Jack, who was in company with his long-time friend, Downwind. The absence of Tailspin Tommy’s sidekick, Skeeter, remained a mystery until the funeral party arrived at Forest Hills cemetery where he was found supervising the grave site. “He would want it this way,” said Skeeter, whose presence in the rear cockpit of Tommy’s biplane saved many a day for the fearless duo during their 1930s airborne adventures.

Following the ashes-to-ashes ceremony at graveside, Skeeter held the mourners in awe as he recounted many of the fabled adventures he had experienced with the deceased, all of which had been published in hardcover books measuring 3-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches and about 1-1/2 inches thick—Tommy didn’t know metric. These Big Little Books were highly sought after by children in grades three to six and were often the subject of elaborate trading procedures—two Smilin’ Jack books were required to gain a trade for one Tailspin Tommy. “The trick was not to bore our young readers with too many words, so we would have one page of text and then a page drawing to illustrate the event,” said the representative from Whitmore Publishing. “Our format was copied by hundreds of publishing companies,” explained the teary-eyed editor, who was said to emanate a distinct scent of printer’s ink. Some hitherto unknown secrets of Tailspin Tommy’s flying career were revealed by Skeeter. “The truth is Tailspin couldn’t keep the ball in the cockpit. When autopilots were introduced he rejoiced, but it was short-lived because radio range confused him. He got the dotdash mixed up with the dash-dot, and when those VHF orienting receivers (VOR) came along, his Jeppesen Approach Plates kept blowing out of the cockpit. “Tommy was much happier with a machine gun mounted in the rear cockpit shooting at bank robbers than learning the workings of the inertial navigation system (INS) and, ultimately, the black box that was installed and which could land the aircraft

(Left) The 1933 cover of one of the hundreds of Big Little Books from the 1930s with text and drawings for Tailspin Tommy. (Right) Tailspin’s handsome competitor for young readers was Smilin’ Jack with his friend, Downwind, and a little Mexican kid whose shirt buttons kept popping off for reasons never disclosed.

without his input. “In a word,” said the ageing rear cockpit sidekick, “Tailspin was a victim of advancing technology and his personal Mean Aerodynamic Chord [MAC] had created an aft load. Tailspin, was an appropriate title for the man,” concluded Skeeter. The departing mourners shuffled, wheel-chaired or walkered their way into the sunset, heading, we think, to the tradition of hoisting one at Dinty Moore’s Bar and Grill with other Big Little Book friends like Jiggs and Maggie, Dick Tracy, Mickey Mouse, Kayo and Moon Mullins, Chester Gump, Buck Rogers, Apple Mary, Terry and the Pirates, Tarzan and the only Canadian Big Little Boo character, King, who was of course of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force. Little Orphan Annie was too young to be admitted to the bar, but her dog, Sandy, was let in and

Big Little Book publishers would print one page of text followed by a full-page drawing to keep its readers from getting bored with too many big words—significantly, this author uses the same technique in his present-day books, which are written for pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers.

he was quoted in a little bubble over his head as saying what he always said to Daddy Warbucks when that Wall Street magnate claimed innocence of insider trading—“Arf –Arf.” So how can such a rare phenomenon as Big Little Books, which produced the first and lon-

gest lasting aviation-based comic strip and which occupies an important spot in aviation history ever be duplicated (or replicated) in eBooks, iBooks, Yahoo, Print on Demand or eWhatchimacallit? Along with Big Little Books, another loss was the occasional inclusion in a favourite Tailspin

Tommy edition, or in four-inch slabs of chewing gum, those now valuable hockey cards featuring the likes of Toe Blake or ‘Big Bomber’ Charlie Connacher of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Alas, books are going to hell in a hand basket and taking Double Bubble with them.

On April 20, 2013, the doors of nearly 50 museums and art venues will stay open all night and hold more than 200 special events as part of Düsseldorf’s 13th annual Night of the Museums. The event is a major draw for art lovers and night revellers alike, who stay up all night for art instead of bars and clubs. On that night, many of the art venues do indeed feel like clubs—spaces filled to capacity, thousands more trying to get in, DJs spinning music—and the event keeps growing year after year. More than 24,000 visited in 2012, one thousand more than the year before, and the numbers are expected to climb yet again.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney, Australia

While bridges are highly practical in purpose, they also add to the beauty of a city or countryside and indeed some become a city or country’s most famous landmark. Following are some bridges from around the world that are a collective testament to the passion for design and artistry that links cultures and generations. Tower Bridge, London, UK - It was built in 1894, all Victorian Gothic with Cornish granite and Portland stone, close to the Tower of London from which it gets its name. Standing 42 metres above the legendary River Thames, its walkways are vantage points for many iconic London landmarks. Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California - No list of bridges is complete without this orange-vermillion wonder that spans the strait linking San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. It has stood above the Golden Gate, often shrouded in fog, for 75 years. At 1,280.2 metres long, the Golden Gate Bridge was, for almost 30 years, the longest span in the world. In a city of amazing attractions,

this bridge continues to be atop most visitors’ lists of landmarks to visit. Visitors can walk or bike across it. Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney, Australia - The iconic bridge is the largest steel-arch bridge in the world. It’s not the longest, that honour belongs to the New River Gorge in West Virginia, USA, but it’s one of the most recognizable symbols of Australia. It’s 1,149 metres long (3,770 feet) and its arch span is 503 metres (1,650 feet). The top of the arch is 134 metres above the sea and the clearance for shipping under the deck is a spacious 49 metres. Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glenfinnan, Scotland - Fans of the Harry Potter films will rec-

ognize this as the railway viaduct that the Hogwarts Express chugs across. Built by Sir Robert McAlpine at the end of the 19th century, the viaduct is composed of 21 arches, each spanning 15 metres and has a maximum height of 30 metres that offers sumptuous views down to Loch Shiel below. The railway viaduct is on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Lochaber in the Highlands and a round trip, between mid-May and the end of October costs approximately $50. Do you have a favourite bridge that has not been included here? Send us your pick(s) along with a photo and if published, you could win a Park’N Fly parking pass for use on your next trip to YVR.

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik

New look and crossed flags logo for all-new C7 Corvette Stingray

Car Talk

Expensive clutch repair now commonplace advantage is that it wears out and requires replacement along with the clutch. Expect a large bill, if your

dual mass flywheel clutch needs

to be replaced. In addition to the normally priced clutch, the new flywheel typically costs from $500 to more than $1,000. New Dual mass flywheel—the springs and hardware in the centre are part of the dual mass system.

Once upon a time clutch replacement was fairly inexpensive. But this is no longer the case, thanks in part to two factors: the advent of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive; and the change to dual mass flywheel clutch systems. For much of the automobile’s history rear-wheel drive was common. This made clutch replacement quite easy: remove the driveshaft, shift lever, clutch linkage; pull out the transmission, and there was the clutch. On many cars and trucks the whole procedure could be done within three hours.

There is good news, how-

ever, because there is, in many cases, an alternative to buying an expensive dual mass flywheel—a

replacement clutch kit. Inside the

kit is a conventional clutch with a new solid metal flywheel.

How well do they work? In

all the replacements that we’ve done they work perfectly: you’ll never miss the dual mass setup.

As you can see, adding a dual

mass flywheel clutch to an all-

wheel drive vehicle can result in an expensive clutch replacement. So be prepared and use your

clutch gently because now, more

than even, you’ll want it to last a long time.

In addition to the new look of Chevrolet’s seventh-generation 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray; the model also sports a new Crossed Flags logo. The Crossed Flags logo has been a hallmark of the Corvette since its 1953 introduction, when it debuted as a concept car at the GM Motorama in New York City. That car originally featured an emblem with a checkered flag crossed with an American flag. Because use of the American flag was prohibited as part of a commercial property, the logo was changed to the fleur-de-lis/bowtie design when the Corvette went into production in June 1953. The 2014 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque. It is also the most capable standard model ever, able to accelerate from 0-60 in less than four seconds and is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Chevrolet Corvette. The all-new Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray shares only two parts with its pre-

These days most cars are

front-wheel drive and this adds to the complexity of removing

the transmission to access the

clutch. In addition, there are now

many all-wheel drive vehicles that require removing additional

driveshafts and perhaps even the transfer case. Clutch jobs now

require five- to nine-plus hours

labour. The other expense in modern clutch replacement is the advent of the dual mass flywheel. Once found only on diesel light trucks and exotic imports, have become commonplace in many vehicles. So just what is this system and why the expense? Unlike ordinary flywheels, which are essentially a large precision-machined heavy steel disc that last through many clutch replacements, the dual mass flywheel is two flywheels put together with dampening springs in between. Dual mass flywheels provide the advantages of minimizing engine vibrations, easier shifts, smoother clutch engagement, and overall smoothness in the vehicle. The dual mass’ dis-
