At Vancouver Airport Authority’s recent Annual Public Meeting, held on May 9, chair of the Board Mary Jordan recognized Larry Berg for his achievements as president and CEO over the last 15 years. As a lasting tribute to Berg’s work to help develop YVR into an award-winning international gateway, Flight Path Park will be enhanced and renamed Larry Berg Park: A Celebration of Flight. Flight Path Park is located along Russ Baker Way at the end of YVR’s South Runway. The park’s new features will include a central plaza, enhanced pathways and an elevated platform for plane-spotting enthusiasts (see a schematic drawing on Page 3). An important community gathering place, the park will also celebrate YVR’s role in connecting people from all over the world with a central globe feature. Upgrades will begin early this summer, with a grand opening slated for Fall 2013.

Vancouver Airport Authority recently announced the winners of its 8th Annual YVR Fly Quiet Awards. The YVR Fly Quiet Awards are presented annually to airlines operating at YVR that have demonstrated the lowest levels of noise within the community during the year. “The YVR Fly Quiet Awards are a testament to the dedication of the airlines in understanding
the importance of and the need to reduce their noise footprint within our community,” said Anne Murray, vice president, community and environmental affairs at Vancouver Airport Authority. “The Airport Authority continues to work with its industry partners and the City of Richmond to ensure that it is the best neighbour possible.”

Lufthansa begins non-stop Munich to Vancouver route Vancouver Airport Authority recently reached another milestone in its longstanding relationship with Lufthansa, as the airline’s inaugural flight from Munich recently touched down at YVR amidst great fanfare. This new non-stop flight arrives and departs daily using an Airbus A330-300 and lets travellers fly nonstop to the historic and picturesque German city. A primary hub connecting more than 285 destinations, Munich is one of Vancouver’s top 10 European markets for passengers departing and arriving from YVR. It is estimated that the VancouverMunich route will create 131 new jobs and will contribute $8.7-million
dollars to B.C.’s GDP during its initial six-month daily service, while also bringing nearly 15,000 visitors to B.C. The new service will also provide opportunities for local businesses and organizations to directly reach customers, suppliers and investors in Europe. The new Vancouver-Munich route marks Lufthansa’s 30 years of service to YVR and bolsters YVR’s transAtlantic offerings for travellers and businesses. During the summer peak period, YVR’s current European services operate at more than 90 per cent passenger capacity. For more information, visit lufthansa.com.

Using the Airport Authority’s noise monitoring and flight tracking system, the winners are selected based on the airline with the lowest annual noise level. Winners of the 8th Annual YVR Fly Quiet Awards are: • Japan Airlines - Wide Body Jet • WestJet Airlines - Narrow Body Jet • Jazz Airlines - Propeller
Aircraft “The City of Richmond would like to congratulate all the airlines that were selected as winners of the 8th Annual YVR Fly Quiet Awards,” said City of Richmond Mayor, Malcolm Brodie. “Vancouver Airport Authority and the aircraft operators’ commitment to noise management are not only important for neighbouring residents, but also an investment in the future of our Richmond community.” Vancouver Airport Authority’s comprehensive aeronautical noise manage-
ment program ensures a balance between safe and convenient 24-hour air travel with enjoyable urban living. The Airport Authority works closely with the members of the YVR Aeronautical Noise Management Committee and values additional input from local residents. Think spring cleaning your closet is tough? Then imagine how much work goes into maintenance, upgrades and cleaning of YVR runways and taxiways to ensure the safety and security of the airport. Maintenance work performed on a regular basis is a part of YVR’s comprehensive multiyear program that ensures the airfield and its systems meets strict standards. Each summer, the 24-hour south runway is closed at night in order to perform the necessary repairs and upgrades that cannot be done during the day, due to the high level of aircraft activity. This year, the south runway will be closed nightly between
9pm and 7am from July 7 to August 30 to allow work crews to complete many updates, including rubber removal, pavement line marking, stormwater drainage system improvements, lighting maintenance and taxiway shoulder construction. During this time, the north runway, which is normally closed between the hours of 10pm and 7am, will be used for departures and arrivals. Once work has been completed, normal operations resume. Because the summer is one of the busiest times for passenger travel at YVR, on June 1 the Airport Authority began using the north runway for limited take-
offs during the day to reduce delays. These take-offs may occur anytime between 7am and 7pm, but will primarily occur between 7am – 9am and 11am – 1pm. Limited use of the north runway for take-offs will help reduce delays and congestion, which will also decrease unnecessary air emissions and fuel burn that happens when aircraft idle in queues waiting to take-off. More information about the summer runway maintenance program and north runway takeoffs for delay reduction can be found at yvr.ca, along with the five-year schedule of planned runway maintenance.

Community YVR receives Tourism Partner of the Year Award from Tourism Richmond The theme for the 5th Annual Tourism Richmond Service Awards, held on May 15 at the River Rock Casino Resort, was Up-Up and Away - Taking Service to New Heights, so it was perhaps fitting that Vancouver Airport Authority came away with Tourism Partner of the Year at the annual gala to recognize great service in the industry. Thematic coincidences aside, the award recognizes the importance of a strong relationship between Vancouver Airport Authority, the Richmond, B.C. community and Tourism Richmond. The awards also honoured a number of individuals from the airport community that displayed amazing service over the past

year in their respective fields. Madelyn Turqueza from Marquise Facilities at YVR was awarded the Travel and Transport Award for her quick-thinking in returning a wallet to a passenger. The wallet had somehow made
its way in to the garbage and Turqueza acted swiftly and without hesitation to get the precious personal item back in the hands of the owner, who was thrilled to have it back. “It’s my favourite story because of the honesty and the diligence of finding the wallet,” said Ed Gavsie, director of visitor and partner services at Tourism Richmond. Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel employee Mandy Biasutti took home the Extra Mile Award for helping some cruise passengers through a difficult time when they arrived at the hotel. The winners were chosen by a panel of four judges, none of whom were from organizations that had nominees.

As a result, many of these children go blind even though they suffer from treatable or preventable conditions. The Orbis medical team provides hands-on training to local eye
care professionals and conveys the latest medical knowledge to treat patients and restore sight. Since 1982, Orbis has treated and transformed the lives of more than 15-million people in 89 countries. More than 600 people attended the Pull for Sight event at YVR, which raised approximately $25,000 for those boarding the Flying Eye Hospital for treatment.
Richmond-based Helijet, North America’s largest scheduled helicopter service, has secured arrangements with existing long term clients to provide turbojet air service from YVR to and from Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. Physiotherapy for Gardeners Gardening is an activity that can produce muscle strain to the lower back, shoulders and knees. It is very important that one maintains proper positioning, uses their hips and knees rather than back to avoid any injuries. Always use tools that can help make the job easier! Physiotherapists have extensive knowledge and experience and can design a safe and effective program to keep gardeners pain and injury free and moving for life. Here is the recommended Physio-4 for gardening: 1. Begin with a warm up. Start with light tasks such as easy raking or a walk to warm up your muscles. Follow this by stretching your back, legs, neck, hands and fingers to
help prevent strain or injury. Your physiotherapist will prescribe the best stretches for gardening specific needs. 2. Be aware of your posture and body mechanics. When sweeping or raking, move your feet instead of twisting your trunk or over-reaching with your arms. When lifting heavy bags or pots, use your legs, keep your back straight, and hold objects close to your body to prevent unnecessary strain on your back. 3. Be ergonomically correct. Stay close to the ground to trowel, plant and weed. Wear kneepads to avoid putting too much pressure on your knees. Ensure your tools are sharp when pruning or sawing to
minimize your workload and select tools with long handles to avoid reaching. 4. Pace yourself. Take breaks and do some gentle stretching to keep limber. Try switching up tasks to use different muscles and avoid overworking one group of muscles. Repetitive actions that use a specific muscle or muscle group can cause pain or injury. Be very careful when you lift. If the object is heavy, get help! Remember: If you like to garden but want to avoid common gardening injuries and sore muscles, it’s best to start and finish your day in the garden with a gentle warm up and some stretching.
The most popular piece of exercise equipment The treadmill is a piece of equipment for walking or running while staying in the same place. They have been around for a long time, since 1875 to be exact. Surprisingly, they were not built for humans, initially. They were built for animals to harness their power to use for butter churns, spinning wheels or water pumps. There were even large treadmills run by horses for farming equipment. It was not until the 1960s that humans began using treadmills as exercise machines. The first consumer treadmill for home use was developed by William Staub, a mechanical engineer who noted that individuals who ran for eight minutes four-to-five times a week would be in better physical condition. He developed a treadmill for his own use, which he called the PaceMaster 600, and soon after began producing the first home treadmills. The benefits of using a treadmill are immense. They are a great aid in losing weight, increasing lung capacity, combating depression and, of course, improving heart health. Treadmills can be used in any season and the latest models have softer decks and additional fea-
One of the best features of a treadmill is that it rarely breaks down, so users are never deprived of an exercise workout. Treadmills are the most popular piece of cardiovascular

Among the users of treadmills today are medical facilities (hospitals, rehabilitation centers, medical and physiotherapy clinics, institutes of higher education), sports clubs, Biomechanics Institute, orthopaedic shoe shops, running shops, Olympic training centers, universities, fire-training centers, NASA, test facilities and training rooms of police and army, gyms as well as home users. The treadmill is the one piece of fitness equipment that has survived all fitness fads. Malaysian pilot youngest to fly around the world
Captain James Tan, 21, the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world in a single-engine aircraft.
Malaysia’s latest tourism attraction may not be its sandy white beaches or lush jungles, but a young Malaysian who has broken several records for being the youngest pilot to travel solo around the world in a tiny, singleengine Cessna 210 Silver Eagle aircraft. Captain James Anthony Tan, 21, is the first—and youngest—Malaysian to travel more than 38,000 kilometres across 20 countries within a 50-day period. He succeeded in completing his expedition, dubbed 1Malaysia Round the World (1MRTW)
in 48 days, starting on March 26, 2013 and arriving back in Malaysia on May 14, 2013. Captain Tan’s historic flight broke two world records: the World Guinness Book of Records; and the World Aviation Academy record for being the youngest pilot to fly more than 25,000 kilometres solo around the world. Tourism Malaysia supported Captain Tan and provided a warm welcome at major stops on his journey, namely in Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, the United States, the United
Kingdom, France, Italy and Jordan. Captain Tan’s stops in North America in April included Anchorage, Juneau, Vancouver, Denver, Indianapolis, Teterboro, and St. Johns. Last year, Malaysia received 25-million tourists and it is believed that Captain Tan’s expedition will help create an awareness of Malaysia and its many tourist attractions and will contribute significantly towards the country’s goal of achieving 36-million tourist arrivals by 2020.

Fitting legacy for the airmen and community that served the west coast in WWII On July 6, 2013 a monument, cenotaph, warrior’s pole, 36.5-metre by 6-metre mural together with seven plaques will be unveiled at the site of a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Flying Boat Station at Bella Bella, B.C. The centerpiece of the commemorative site will be a 1/5scale replica of Supermarine Stranraer RCAF #949, the first of many flying boats sent to the station to give protection and surveillance to the west coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Built by members of Langley’s Canadian Museum of Flight, the Stranraer replica has a wingspan of five metres. The spectacular wall mural was painted over the period of one month by internationally renowned artist Paul Ygartua. It depicts the history of Bella Bella as represented by the area’s key historical figures, from 1894 to modern day. The mural acknowledges the relationship of the native community within the area and the First Nations’ Veterans who served Canada in its time of need. The newest member of the 787 family began taking shape on schedule May 30, 2013 in Everett, Wash., when Boeing started joining large sections of the super-efficient jet. “From the start, the entire 787-9 team has focused relentlessly on execution so that we fulfill the commitments to our customers+es, the 787-9 will carry 40 more passengers an additional 555 kilometres while using 20 per cent less fuel than similarly sized airplanes.
The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering the features passengers prefer such as large, dimmable windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride. The vertical stabilizer on this 787-9 reflects the new Boeing Commercial Airplanes livery, a refreshed look for the Boeing family of airplanes that started with the 747-8 and evolved with the 737 MAX. Many features of
the livery on the original 787 are reflected in the new design. The prominent number designator on the tail helps distinguish various models within the same product family. First flight of the 787-9 is scheduled for the second half of 2013, with first delivery to launch customer Air New Zealand set for early 2014. Twenty customers around the world have ordered 355 787-9s, accounting for 40 per cent of all 787 orders.

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield’s historic five-month mission Last month, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) Astronaut Chris Hadfield landed safely on the plains of Kazakhstan aboard a Russian Soyuz Capsule after completion of a five-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), which began on December 19, 2012. Hadfield and the Station crew conducted more than 130 science experiments, establishing a record for science conducted on the Station. In March 2013, Hadfield achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first Canadian to command the Station. Hadfield captured the world’s attention, sharing his space mission
through countless tweets, videos and exchanges with school groups. His engaging videos, showing daily life and work aboard the Station, and his photographs of planet Earth reminded the world that space exploration is not only about looking beyond but also about learning about our planet. While on the Station, Hadfield also performed Canadian experiments that will help to provide better understanding of life on Earth, such as the human cardiovascular system and radiation, and technologies for medical testing in remote locations. Highlights from Hadfield’s mission include: • Engaging students across the
country every week, through video connections and amateur radio contacts, reinforcing the importance of a sound education and disciplined work • Announcing the winners of the Canadian Space Agency high school science contest. His spellbinding demonstration of the winning experiment on surface tension, has been viewed by millions • Singing, with close to a million people across Canada and around the world, mostly students, for Music Monday • Launching an interactive learning website on space with the National Film Board
• Unveiling Canada’s new $5 bank note, which features Canadian robotics • Speaking with remarkable Canadians like His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper and actor William Shatner • Reaching 885,000 followers on Twitter and producing more than 88 videos that have been viewed close to 23-million times • Conducting more than 130 science experiments • Taking part in the catch and berth of SpaceX’s Dragon capsule using Canadarm2.

Countdown begins for A350 XWB maiden flight
Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engines have run for the first time on the first Airbus 350 XWB (known as MSN1) following the start-up of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), as part of the preparations for the aircraft’s maiden flight. The A350 XWB is an allnew mid-size long range product line comprising three versions and seating between 270 and 350 passengers in typical three-class layouts. When in service, the new family will bring a step change in efficiency compared with existing aircraft in this size category, using 25 per cent less fuel and providing an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions. When the first A350 XWB makes its maiden flight, which
is expected this month, an international crew of six will be on board, comprising two flight test pilots, one test flight engineer and three flight test engineers. The first take-off will mark the beginning of more than nine months of testing, in which pilots put the aircraft through increasingly complex manoeuvers to ensure its airworthiness and safety. The first plane will not carry passengers and will be filled with computers and equipment to record performance data. Scheduled for entry-into-service in second half of 2014, the A350 XWB has already won 616 firm orders from 34 customers worldwide.

Airport Chaplaincy celebrates its 30th anniversary By Glen Dierker United Airlines flights. Her name is Ming Lee, she’s female, she’s 5’ 2” and she’s Asian!’ “Maybe that was just the chuckle I needed in the midst of all that happened that day. I took down the lady’s name and number on a piece of scrap paper, stuck it in my pocket, and said a quick prayer. I headed off to the US Departures area, which was a massive sea of humanity. As I struggled through the lines, I kept saying a litany of prayers, ‘Ming Lee, Ming Lee, O where could you be, Ming Lee?’ “The very first person I spoke to was a petite lady sitting in a fetal position under a bank of public telephones. She looked lost and confused and on the verge of panic. For some reason, our eyes met and out of the blue I asked, Ming Lee? Her eyes immediately brightened and she exclaimed, “You found me!” I told her daughter wanted her to phone at which point she pulled out a fist full of call cards and exclaimed ‘No Work, No Work’. In among the calling cards I spotted my business card. Someone must have given it to her the day before. Pointing at the card; I said ‘That’s me.’ She said ‘Oh! That’s you!’ “I took her hand, still reeling from the shock of finding her so quickly and led her to the United Airlines counter to inform the agent that I had found her within a couple of minutes of leaving him. ‘How did you do that, Padre?’ ‘Connections, my son, connections,’ I answered. I booked her on the first flight available and placed her with a family who spoke her language.” As Daggett finishes this story and wipes a tear from his eye, he states boldly, “Now you tell me God was not working there!” While the chapel receives some funding through the management of a local thrift store, the majority of revenue comes from private donations. “Raising funds for our work is sometimes a struggle, but God is good and has provided for our ministry at the airport,” said Daggett. Daggett has informed the chapel Board of his plans to retire in the near future and a search has been launched for his replacement. While he is saddened by the thought of leaving the cha-

The new chaplain will have a new set of challenges but will work from a solid foundation that has been laid by the current
group of volunteers. “I plan on volunteering in my retirement,” said Daggett. “I think I might just trade in this blue blazer and tie for a green vest and become a Green Coat.” It is safe to say that the airport community is pleased that Daggett plans on “staying on.” Please visit the chapel on

care and concern for all those with whom they come in contact. One such volunteer is the son of a Vietnamese refugee whose parents were once sponsored by Daggett’s former church. Daggett explains his day as being non-typical, waking each morning and looking forward to meeting the “airport family.” One-third of his time is spent on his walk-about (or, as he quips, his “talk-about”). Over the years, Daggett has seen a change in attitude at the airport. “People recognize who I am now. There’s nothing better that getting a high-five from the cart collectors as they drive by or having folks in need seek out or be referred to the chapel by airport staff.” Chaplain Daggett also conducts fear-of-flying programs for individuals who feel some trepidation about getting on an aircraft. Thanks to the support of airlines and agents alike, he has assisted in alleviating many tense flyers of their anxieties. Some of Daggett’s favourite chapel stories include those of refugees who have experienced the goodness of those involved with the chapel. He tells the story of a Muslim refugee who required a ride to a hearing downtown. After spending some time with the chapel volunteers the refugee asked the chaplain why he looked after people he did not know. Chaplain Daggett replied that he had always lived by the golden rule that he was taught as a boy—to do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. The refugee replied, “I have been taught that you are my enemy, but I can tell that you are a friend.” Another episode that stands out was the September 11, 2001 episode of Ming Lee. “In the midst of all the chaos and confusion of the day after 9-11, I received a call from a lady in Detroit. ‘You’ve got to find my mother. She’s had brain surgery, speaks very little English and will be lost and confused.’ How she got my number is still a mystery. I asked her to describe her mother and I offered to page her. ‘No it won’t help to page her because she would not understand what to do. She was diverted to Vancouver on one of the
It is said that blessings, both obvious and not-so-obvious, come our way every day. Among the latter are things that we might not need or see everyday yet, instinctively, we know they are there for us in time of need. In a modern airport facility such as YVR, which greets some 17-million passengers annually and has 24,000 employees who call it their workplace, there is a sanctuary from all this activity situated on the Arrivals Level of the International Terminal Building. This sanctuary, known as the chapel, will have two reasons to celebrate this month. Firstly, it will celebrate its 30th anniversary of serving the guests and staff of YVR. Secondly, its chaplain, Layne Daggett, will celebrate 20 years serving as airport chaplain. When the chaplaincy opened its doors in 1983, a small group of six people participated in the official handing over of the keys to the chaplain. At that time, many other observers expected the facility to stay open only for a few weeks. Today, the chapel has 10,000 personal contacts with individuals annually. It has not only survived but thrived with the help of the 40-plus volunteers who greet visitors to the chapel day-afterday between 8am and 8pm. The chapel stays open for prayers 24 hours a day and its chaplains are on call 24/7. Their services include everything from greeting travellers to doing everything possible to address concerns, worries, and spiritual needs. During its 30 years of existence, the chapel has provided assistance to more than 3,500 refugee claimants with emergency situations, assisting them with placement in homes, churches and community agencies. Daggett was one of 10 individuals across Canada to be presented with the Citation of Citizenship award by the Government of Canada for helping new immigrants adjust to life in Canada. Along with Daggett and his volunteer staff, the chaplaincy also has five associate chaplains from several faith groups. The volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds but have one common thread—a genuine

Innovative travel products Today’s travellers need it all: the convenience and comfort of home mixed with the practicality of today’s tight carry-on and luggage restrictions. Here are five fun, practical and downright cool items that will make any road warrior’s next trip a success.
A bulging George Costanza wallet is definitely a no-no. But the newly released HuMn2 wallets and the carbon fiber HuMn Mini solve that problem in an instant. The HuMn 2 wallet is a sleek, minimalist wallet that can be configured in one, two or three powder-coated aluminum plates with a shock strap. The aluminum plates protect you from electronic theft by shielding credit cards from EMI and RFID skimming. The wallet comes in a variety of colours allowing complete customization. And despite being small and streamlined, the wallet can accommodate almost all world notes. The new carbon fiber mini offers all the features of the HuMn2, but in an even
smaller package. $75; humnwallet.com. The Pocket Monkey is the most innovative utility tool to hit the market since the Swiss army knife. Weighing only 28 grams, and TSA-compliant, it fits easily into a credit card slot in a wallet, purse or pocket. This durable and versatile 12-in-1 tool is constructed of hardened stainless steel and serves a variety of everyday and specialty functions—perfect for impromptu projects anywhere they may arise. $14; zootilitytools.com. The Ninja Standing Desk is the first portable sit and stand
desk. Weighing in at just less than 2.5 kilograms, it can be stored away in a bag the size of a laptop. This makes it perfect for travelling. All you need is a door, wall or cubicle to hang it on. If you get tired of standing, then simply add the third shelf and sit down as you work. Each shelf holds up to 13 kilograms. It’s sturdy enough for everyday use. $159-$219; ninjastandingdesk. com.

The JT Smart comes with dual SIM card functionality, so travellers can use a home SIM card and an international SIM card to ensure that they get the lowest available roaming and data rates and never miss a call when travelling abroad. The phone includes an activity monitor, so the user knows exactly how much data is being used on the move. The JT Smart Android phone is sold “unlocked,” meaning it’s not tied to a specific service provider, so you can use it at home or abroad. The JT Smart is bundled with the award-winning Passport International SIM card (including $10 credit) for just $149.99 at

Vancouver and Toronto neck-and-neck in attracting international tourists Panorama of Vancouver.
Toronto is expected to be slightly ahead of Vancouver for fourth place among overnight international travellers in North America, but tourists are expected to spend $2.3-billion (35 per cent more) in Vancouver than in Toronto in 2013, according to MasterCard’s Global Destination Cities Index, an analysis of international travel and visitor spending in 132 major cities. “This suggests that Vancouver has done a better job creating the activities, the arts, culture, entertainment and historic sites that visitors will pay to experi-
ence,” said Dr. Yuwa HedrickWong, the economist who serves as Global Economic Advisor to MasterCard. “That’s important because those visitor dollars create a lot of jobs, economic activity and social benefits.” Three Canadian cities ranked within the top 10 destination cities for international travellers in North America, with Toronto in fourth place, Vancouver in fifth and Montreal in ninth place. “When cities attract more visitors that creates a need to upgrade infrastructure and improve the cityscape and the

overall urban environment,” said Dr. Hedrick-Wong. “The Index indicates a strong connection between a city’s investment in infrastructure and amenities and its tourist draw.” In the international rankings, Bangkok beat London as this year’s premier destination for international travellers. No Canadian city ranked among the top 20 destinations. This is the first time an Asian city ranked first since the Index was launched in 2010. London is now followed by Paris, Singapore, New York, Istanbul, and Dubai. Paris remains third, but has shown a decline in the estimated number of international visitor arrivals. Istanbul and Dubai show the strongest growth (along with Bangkok) in increasing their arrival numbers by 9.5 per cent and 10.9 per cent. respectively. Vancouver is expected to trail only New York and Los Angeles among North America cities in the amount overnight visitors spend. Visitors are estimated to spend $6.5-billion in Vancouver in 2013 compared to only $4.2-billion in Toronto, even though both cities will attract
3.4-million overnight visitors a year. On a global scale, among the top 132 cities covered in the MasterCard Index, Vancouver just edged into the top 20 of expected international visitor spending at number 17. New
York still leads all, followed by London, Paris, Bangkok and Singapore rounding out the top five. The MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities ranks cities in terms of the number of total international visitor arrivals
and the cross-border spending by these same visitors in the destination cities. The Index provides visitor and passenger growth forecasts for 2013. Neither the Index nor the accompanying reports are based on MasterCard volumes or transactional data.

Honda brand leads 2013 safety ratings The new 2013 Honda Civic Sedan, Canada’s best selling passenger car for 15 consecutive years, has received the highest possible overall safety ratings from both the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2013 Civic Sedan recently received the top FiveStar Overall Vehicle Score in NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), and the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, inclu ding a top score in the new small overlap frontal collision test. Honda leads all automakers with every one of its tested model year 2013 vehicles earning a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. The 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe are the first and only small cars to earn the highest safety rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS,
and the NCAP Five-Star Overall Vehicle Score for the Civic Sedan. The 2013 Accord also earned these high safety ratings in the midsize segment. “Car buyers cannot find a small car in Canada with higher overall safety ratings than the 2013 Honda Civic,” said Dave Gardner, vice president of sales and marketing at Honda Canada. “Safety ratings leadership across product lines is a fundamental part of not only our strategic business plan, but also our philosophy as a company.” The Civic Sedan, significantly reengineered for 2013, is equipped with Honda’s next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which plays a critical role in making Civic the first small car to earn a Top Safety Pick+ crash safety rating and the first to earn the highest rating in the IIHS’ new small overlap frontal crash test (sometimes called a ‘narrow

In a world where most car manufacturers tout minimal maintenance, Subaru has published a 500,000 kilometre maintenance schedule. What’s so great about that? It addresses what needs to be done to keep your car operating reliably for a long time. It also represents the forward thinking of a company that builds cars to last a long time. Will many Subaru owners keep their cars for that long? Highly unlikely, but those who follow this maintenance schedule will undoubtedly have very reliable cars for the duration of
their ownership. When and if they do sell their cars, they are more likely to get top dollar for the vehicle because it will be in good condition. Here are some of the recommendations for a car’s maintenance schedule: • 6,000 kilometer oil change interval • Brake fluid flushes • Transmission flushes • Regular comprehensive inspections There are several excellent recommendations that are unseen on any other maintenance schedule but are a valuable part of a
good maintenance program: • Fuel injection cleaning • Throttle plate cleaning • Mass Air flow sensor cleaning. Your car is an expensive purchase and keeping it running properly saves a lot of money in the long run. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will soon have the best view of Canada—from the air! The Airport Authority is creating a shared photo gallery of images collected from across Canada taken in-flight—an interesting way to dress up its facilities and tell the visual story
of our expansive and incredible country from high above. These images will live on the temporary walls of the Domestic Terminal’s A and B Piers, currently undergoing renovation to add gates, expand seating areas and improve passenger amenities. This ever-changing gallery
will also live online at yvr.ca/ YVRCanada. Participating in the Canada from the Air photo gallery is easy. Next time you are travelling to or from a Canadian destination
via YVR, snap an in-flight photo. Then share it via Twitter or email so it can be posted online and shared on the Domestic Terminal’s live gallery walls.

More shopping options for U.S. travellers Travellers headed to the U.S. from YVR are now able to purchase goods of up to $200 in the airport’s after-security area before their flight, thanks to a new agreement between Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). The new agreement increases the maximum value of each individual retail item sold in the airport’s U.S. postsecurity departures area from $100 to $200. By the end of 2013, the purchase limit per item will reach $400, making it possible for retailers to stock higher-value merchandise,

More than 10 years in the making, the Airport Authority championed the purchase
increase, working closely with USCBP and retail operators. “We are always working to match our retail and service options to our customers’ needs,” said Susan Stiene, director of commercial services for the Airport Authority. “We are proud of our partnership with USCBP and our business partners to develop this program and believe passengers will truly benefit from it.” After successful implementation at YVR, this new agreement will roll out in other Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance.
