On June 18, 2013, Vancouver Airport Authority Board of Directors chair Mary Jordan announced the appointment of Craig Richmond to the role of president & CEO Vancouver Airport Authority. Richmond is Vancouver Airport Authority’s third president & CEO since
management of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) transferred from the federal government to a local, community-based authority in 1992. On July 1, Richmond assumed responsibility from Larry Berg. During Berg’s 15-year tenure as leader of the Airport Authority, YVR
earned its international reputation for airport excellence. As a community-based organization, the Airport Authority consulted extensively with local stakeholders to build a vision for its next leader. A dedicated team of Airport Authority directors undertook a global recruitment effort to find
the ideal candidate to fill the role. Amongst the most important requirements was an extensive aviation industry expertise, a working understanding of the business of airports and a strategic vision for writing the next chapter of YVR’s story. “Like YVR itself, our new president & CEO is a
home-grown success story,” said Jordan. “A unique mix of work experience, skills, education and values amassed over a lifetime in aviation— including a decade’s worth of experience as a Canadian military fighter pilot—make Craig a great fit for a great job.” See Craig Richmond page 3

WestJet recently launched its regional service to smaller communities in Western Canada with the WestJet Encore brand. Arriving at YVR and departing daily from Fort St. John and Victoria, the Encore flights will use a Bombardier Q400 aircraft. The flight codes will still use the WS prefix and will operate exclusively out of the gates in the Domestic Terminal. In true WestJet fashion, a celebratory launch event took place for the first arriving flight on June 24, 2013, complete with prizes and cake for all the passengers in the area.
The WestJet team gathers around the cake and celebrates the arrival of the very first Encore aircraft to YVR.

Richmond will oversee the effective operation and strategic vision for the future of YVR, Canada’s second-busiest airport and a key global gateway on North America’s west coast. He will be responsible for leading an approach designed to keep this award-winning international airport competitive, a community contributor and key economic generator for British Columbia. Born in Vancouver and raised in Kamloops, B.C., Richmond’s early introduction to aviation came when, at 13, he took his first job as a gas jockey for propeller aircraft at Kamloops Airport. Soon after, he earned his pilot’s license, taking to the skies before learning to drive a car. Between 1980 and 1990, Richmond piloted multi-crew aircraft as a Canadian Armed Forces Military pilot. Educated at the University of Manitoba, Richmond holds both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Masters in Business Administration. In 1995, Richmond joined Vancouver Airport Authority and spent more than 11 years in various operational roles including manager, airside operations and vice president, operations. During his tenure as VP, Richmond oversaw the safe and efficient movement of millions of passengers, including those diverted to YVR in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Richmond championed airfield safety, including the introduction of the first radar debris detection system to a commercial airport, led strategic planning and community consultation for major changes to runway operations and spearheaded improvements to YVR’s world-renowned customer service. He also served as the organization’s lead spokesperson during crisis and
issues response. In 2006, Richmond joined Vantage Airport Group taking his management excellence and operational expertise to airports around the world. Formerly Vancouver Airport Services (YVRAS), Vantage Airport Group was created by Vancouver Airport Authority to export YVR’s management excellence and operational expertise to airports around the world. Vantage Airport Group is a for-profit Canadian company that manages 11 airports on three continents. Vancouver Airport Authority remains a 50 per cent shareholder in the enterprise. A four-year term as president & CEO of Nassau Airport Development Company yielded international experience for Richmond, who oversaw planning and delivery of a $409-million terminal redevelopment project. As CEO of three airports in Northern England— Liverpool John Lennon, Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield and Durham Tees Valley Airport— Richmond applied his expertise to operations in transition. In a double-dip recession, Richmond cut operational costs, bolstered non-aeronautical revenue and implemented leading e-commerce, customer service and social media strategies to improve airport experience. Prior to accepting the position with Vancouver Airport Authority, which he calls a “dream come true,” Richmond most recently served as CEO of Larnaka International and Pafos International airports in Cyprus. “Not many people can say that the job they wished for as a child is the job they will actually one day have as an adult,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “To be back in Vancouver at what I believe is the best airport in the world is a dream come true. I look for-
ward to working with the exceptional team of Airport Authority employees. Together with the 23,000 people who work at the airport, we will continue to create an airport that shows our pride in B.C. that British Columbians can be proud of and that every passenger can enjoy.” With a focus on innovation, sustainability and teamwork toward developing YVR’s potential as a key global gateway, Richmond’s mandate will be to continue to shape and enhance YVR’s reputation as North America’s top airport. Vancouver Airport Authority is a community-based, not-forprofit organization that manages YVR. Canada’s second busiest airport, YVR served 17.6-million passengers in 2012, facilitated 261,000 takeoffs and landings and handled 227,000 tonnes of cargo. Sixty-eight airlines serve YVR, connecting people and businesses to more than 120 destinations worldwide. Vancouver Airport Authority is a dedicated community partner and in 2012 donated more than $650,000 to community organizations.

Russ Baker Way Repaving Project Starting mid-July 2013, Vancouver Airport Authority will begin repaving Russ Baker Way, between Miller Road and the North end of the No. 2 Road Bridge in Richmond. Expected to take between 10 and 12 weeks to complete, this project will require both daytime and nighttime north- and southbound lane closures and reduced vehicle speed limits, which will impact traffic and cause some delays. During the repaving, Russ Baker Way’s north- and southbound cycling lanes will not be available, and cyclists are encouraged to find alternate routes.
Wherever possible, work will be performed at night for reduced impact to traffic. To ensure the project is completed as safely and quickly as possible, lanes will remain open at all times, as follows: • A minimum of two lanes will operate in each direction during the day (between 6am and 8pm) • A minimum of one lane will operate in each direction at night (between 8pm and 6am) Russ Baker Way is a major artery for motor vehicle traffic and cyclists. Once complete in early fall 2013, the repaved road will offer safer and more reli-
able access to and from YVR, Richmond
and
Vancouver
for neighbouring residents,
local businesses, travellers and commuters.
Cyclists will also enjoy a
new bike lane connecting Russ
Baker Way to the community of Burkeville.

The Spirit of Leadership: A High Tea Adventure The Aviation Leadership Foundation, in partnership with the Women in Aviation Sea to Sky Chapter, is hosting “The Spirit of Leadership – A High Tea adventure” on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the historic Georgia Hotel. This event will be the perfect afternoon escape for all people who love adventure, high tea, aviation, leadership and/or history. With a focus on adventure, guests will have the opportunity to connect with other professionals who share a passion for leadership. The tea features speakers, including Jeff Glickman, a forensic imaging specialist who has provided digital imaging services for The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR). His assignment: to search for clues that might help explain the mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart, whose airplane was lost over the South Pacific approximately 60 years ago. Amelia Earhart endures in our consciousness as one of the world’s most celebrated aviators. She remains a symbol of the leadership, power, and the perseverance of women as well as the courage and adventurous spirit so essential to our own successes. After reconstructing and examining a 58-year-old film of Earhart’s plane, the team discovered proof that supported TIGHAR’s theory: Earhart lost her receiving antenna on take-

off which had been there only moments before. This revelation helped explain why Earhart lost radio contact with the Itasca, a Coast Guard cutter assigned to help her navigate the endless waters of the South Pacific. Today, Glickman is helping TIGHAR determine where Earhart’s plane went down. Other speakers will engage the audience in their own stories of courage, adventure, and leadership, culminating with Tea Talks, inspired by the phenomenal success of TED Talks; Ideas Worth Spreading. The Aviation Leadership Foundation will feature several short talks in this
same spirit. With a vintage aviation theme and all the makings of a proper English afternoon tea, the event will tantalize the taste buds with the stories and spirit of leadership. Tickets may be purchased through the Foundation’s web site at aviationleadership.com. This monthly Health & Wellness column features medical, dental and health information from a variety of trained professionals. Send us a question that you would like answered on any of these areas of health and wellness.
Tips for safe travel and touring during the summer One of the best parts of summer is having the time to do some of the things you really enjoy. This can mean long bike rides, playing football, golfing, camping, hiking and all kinds of fun activities. Whichever ones you and your family are involved in, you’ll have more fun and be safer if you prepare ahead of time and try not to overdo it. To stay healthy, it’s important to take precautions. Some examples are: While walking and taking in the sights, be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you start to feel thirsty—the need for water starts before you’re aware of it. On average, try to drink a cup of water about 15 minutes before starting out, and then, depending on how hot it is and how fast you’re walking, drink one-half to one cup of every 15 to 20 minutes. Consider keeping a sports drink handy to help replenish lost electrolytes from excess sweating. Stay out of the sun during the hottest times—usually between 11am and 4pm—and cover up when in the sun. If cycling, wear a proper bicycle helmet. Stretch before and after physical activities to avoid muscle cramps and soreness. If you’re driving places, be sure your children are buckled up in an approved car seat or booster seat. Don’t forget to buckle up yourself. If you take prescription medications, be sure to have enough on hand when you travel, plus a bit extra in case of delays. If you’re travelling by air, don’t pack your medications in your check-in luggage—luggage may get delayed or lost. Many people recommend not packing them in luggage at all, no matter how you travel, in case your bags get lost or stolen. Be sure to keep the medications in their original containers, especially if you’re crossing borders. Not only is this safest thing to do to avoid medication mix-ups, it also shows border inspectors what medications
you’re carrying in case you’re questioned about them. For some families, travelling and touring means camping and hiking. Enjoying the outdoors can have a few risks, however; take some simple precautions so you won’t have to cut your vacation short. Bug bites: Mosquito bites, although not serious for most people, can be uncomfortable. Prevent bites by using insect repellent or oil of lemon eucalyptus on your skin, placing citronella candles around you, and covering as much skin as possible. Avoid being outside at sundown, when mosquitoes are at their worst, and stay away from areas of stagnant water – breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If you do get bitten, antihistamine pills or lotions can help with the itch, as can applying a cool compress to the swollen area. Stinging insects are a common outdoor problem both at home and away, and unfortunately, they aren’t deterred by insect repellents. Wasps love sweet food, so keep foods and drinks covered while outside and don’t wear sweet-smelling perfumes or hairsprays. Bees travel in a straight line back and forth from their hives; avoid getting in their line of flight. Don’t allow children to disturb nests or hives—many children have been stung after throwing rocks at nests. If you do get stung, check to see if the stinger is still in the skin (bees sting only once, leaving their stingers), but don’t pull it out because this allows more venom to escape. Gently scrape it off with a flat object like the dull edge of a knife or the edge of a credit card. For pain and swelling, try applying a paste of baking soda and water. For itching and swelling, use an antihistamine cream. If the bitten area swells, turns red and antihistamines don’t help, consider seeking medical attention. Deer ticks are a major concern in some parts of North America because they can be Lyme disease carriers.
Found most commonly in the American Northeast, Midwest, and West, these ticks hide mostly in shady, tall grass, although they can be found in shrubs, lawns, and gardens as well. To avoid being bitten by a tick, wear long pants tucked into socks or boots to keep ticks off your legs. Wear closed-toe shoes—no sandals. After a hike, check your body for ticks, especially the insides of knees and elbows and the neck just below the hairline. If you find a tick, don’t panic. Don’t grab at it or squeeze it off. Instead, using small tweezers, grab the tick by the head and pull it out, then kill it by placing it in alcohol. Don’t cover it with anything or try to kill it while it’s on the skin, as this could release more toxin. Once the tick is removed, watch the site for a rash—it can begin up to one month following the bite. If you’re concerned, call your doctor. Earlier this month, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced the successful conclusion of an expanded air transport agreement with China. The amendments to the agreement will give airlines the flexibility to offer more travel options and help Canadian airports attract new flight links, which will help to create economic opportunities in Canada and China. “Our government is focused on jobs, growth and concrete ways to increase trade and tour-
ism,” said Baird. “This agreement is good news for travellers, shippers and Canada’s aviation industry as a whole.” Bilateral trade with China reached record levels in 2012, and China is now Canada’s second-largest export destination after the United States. “Increasing ties with the AsiaPacific region is absolutely vital to Canada’s future prosperity,” said Baird. “Our government gets that in a way no previous government has. This [agreement] is just the latest example of that.”
Baird made the announcement while on his eighth visit to China, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announces Canada’s new 10-year ePassport.
Canada’s new and more secure 10-year ePassport is now available to Canadians. ePassports are the international norm in travel documents and contain technologically advanced features, including an embedded electronic chip, to prevent fraud. The chip stores the same personal information as that which is recorded on the second page of the passport— except for the signature—as
well as a photo and a digital security feature that proves that the passport was issued by the Government of Canada. To combat fraud, once the personal information is stored on the chip, it cannot be modified without invalidating the passport. “The new, 10-year ePassport provides more convenience for Canadians, and facilitates safe, secure travel which, in turn, helps create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for Canadians,” said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. “The Canadian passport is not only a privilege of citizenship, but a reflection of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.” The new ePassport features iconic images that celebrate Canada’s history and culture, such as: Robert Harris’s painting of the Fathers of Confederation; a depiction of the last spike completing the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885; and a picture of Pier 21 in Halifax—one of the most significant ports of entry for newly-arrived immigrants between 1928 and 1971 and now a National Historic Site. At $160, a 10-year pass-
port provides better value for money as it costs less per year than the previous cost of a fiveyear passport. It also means that Canadians will not have to renew their passports as frequently. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) now bears primary responsibility for Passport Canada, which had previously been part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. This responsibility is in line with the duties CIC already performs, such as admitting permanents residents, promoting the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and determining Canadian citizenship. Canadians continue to access passport services through all of the same service locations currently available in Canada through the existing network of 144 Service Canada Centres, 56 Canada Post intake locations and 34 passport offices across the country. Service Canada will assume responsibility for passport operations and, over time, services will expand to more Service Canada Centres. Ultimately, Canadians will be able to apply for a passport online.

On average, more than 70,000 people from across Richmond, Metro Vancouver and the Pacific
Northwest visit the Steveston community for the July 1st festivities, which include a parade, the famous Steveston Salmon Festival and family entertainment throughout the day. Representing YVR in the parade were staff, family and friends, volunteer Green Coats, Airside Emergency Services members and airport vehicles, which provided the public with an opportunity to see Red 2, one of the airport’s unique airfield fire-fighting emergency trucks up close. Red 2 was a massive hit with the crowds, using its fire suppression to blast some mist on over-heated parade patrons.

At present, 19 Star Alliance member airlines operate more than 4,000 daily flights to, from and within the region, serving 280 airports in 44 countries. In addition to bringing Kaohsiung in Taiwan and Surabaya in Indonesia as unique airports to the network, EVA Air expands the Star Alliance presence on the important cross-strait market, which has grown from an annual passenger volume of just over three million in 2009 to around nine million in 2012. EVA Air now offers through check-in to the final destination

Passengers benefit as they do not need to collect their boarding passes for connecting flights at the transfer airports and, where permitted by local customs regulations, baggage will also be sent through to the final destinations. Members in EVA Air Infinity MileageLands Frequent Flyer Programme (FFP) will now be able to collect and redeem miles on all Star Alliance member airlines. FFP members from all other Star Alliance member airlines can also now make use of these when travelling on EVA Air. EVA Air also boosts the
attractiveness of the network’s most popular fare product, the Star Alliance Round the World Fare (RTW). Available in First, Business and Economy Class, this fare allows customers to travel around the globe making use of the 28-member airline network. Customers can now make use of all EVA Air flights when booking an RTW fare, either through the Book & Fly online booking tool, via an airline or through a travel agency. Close to 180,000 visitors to the show were treated to daily flight demonstrations of the Russian Sukhoi Su 35, the Yak 130 military training aircraft and the Sukhoi Super Jet 100seat commercial airliner. Established in 1909, Paris Air Show is held every odd year at Le Bourget Airport in north Paris and is considered one of the highest-ranked air shows in the world.
For the first time the Sukhoi SU-35 flew outside Russia.
Eight nations have ordered 174 Airbus A400Ms. Airbus Military is expected to deliver the first aircraft in the second quarter of 2013.

Sound bites from Canadian aviation history By Jack Schofield
WARNING: Some language used in this article has been recorded from the floor of the House of Commons, Ottawa and will be found offensive to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. In 1911, when French aviator Louis Blériot flew his monoplane across the channel from France to England, he did so without a passport. Good Lord! voiced the leaders of the world, brandishing their rubber stamps, something will have to be done about this! And in 1912, they convened a meeting in Geneva, which would become the first meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). They didn’t call it by that name at the time, but that august body would soon become known by those now familiar initials. Canadian politicians were not eager to attend that first meeting because railways, not aeroplanes, were on their minds. The-then PM, Sir Robert Borden, reluctantly sent a delegate to Geneva, who came home with quite a bit of Swiss cheese, along with the news that some crazies in Europe believed the airplane would be the next means of general transport and wanted an international body to be established to set the rules of the game. One of the

major propositions was that each country should establish a civil aviation department and remove aviation from the control of the military. Canada promptly filed the accord into a bottom drawer and assigned all matters aviation to the military—the Department of National Defense (DND)—and promptly returned to laying railway tracks. Twenty-three years later (1930), Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced to his caucus that at one of his regular séances, he had been informed by the spirit of his deceased mother that a United States airline company was planning to establish a domestic air service in Canada. This prompted a mad scramble to find the bottom drawer holding the 1912 accord file, and King immediately put out an allpoints bulletin to find somebody who could establish policy for

civil aviation in Canada. ‘Get an American,’ said Prime Minister King. ‘Americans know what they are doing.’ A backbencher suggested they appoint James Richardson who had already created an airline in Canada—Canadian Airways. Richardson had amalgamated several small airlines across the country and had the makings of a comprehensive domestic air service. ‘Who’s he? asked King. A stocks and bonds salesman? Get a Yank!’ C.D. Howe, who had been born in the U.S.A., was suggested ‘C.D. who?’ asked King. ‘C.D. Howe,’ said the caucus. And thus was born the Minister of Everything, who created Trans Canada Airlines (TCA) by an Act of Parliament— one that did not allow any competition with the new public airline. CD Howe had all the

mail contracts held by James Richardson’s Canadian Airways cancelled and given to TCA, and hired all of Richardson’s, suddenly unemployed, pilots and engineers. Howe even purchased some of Richardson’s airplanes, a move that was deemed politically clever and expedient. Canada then issued its first book of air regulations, which essentially established that pilots should ‘hang a right’ if they encountered another aircraft coming from the opposite direction. Two of its 12 pages were devoted to definitions, such as the use of the word “aerodyne,” which seems to have slipped from general usage and no longer appears in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. During World War II that book of air regulations was withdrawn until 1945, when it was republished still bearing the title Air Regulations 1938, and “aerodyne” flew once again.
Liberal Prime Minister Mackenzie King was in power so long that it seems he made all of the mistakes, but in 1957 along came John Diefenbaker, a Conservative, who would top them all. Here are some sound bites from those years. PM John Diefenbaker to Transport Minister George Hees: ‘Do you think they can impeach me for doing this? It was only an airplane. You say, impeachment only happens in the USA, Canadians don’t care, and impeachment always has to do with sexual misconduct—that’s good to hear, I haven’t been misconducting for years. ‘Bloody Avro Arrow! Maybe they will forget the 23,000 people I put on EI, and the bankruptcies and the brain drain to the U.S. Maybe someday they will forget the Arrow and name a grain elevator after me, or perhaps a ship—an ice breaker would be nice.’ Note from a 2008 press clipping: Conservative PM, Steven Harper, names new icebreaker, the John Diefenbaker. Nothing of great significance happened after Diefenbaker scrapped the Arrow until Pierre Elliot Trudeau came along, adding the following sound bites to Canadian aviation history. 1968 PM Pierre Trudeau

Aviation History to ministers of transport Paul Hellyer, James Richardson, Don Jamieson, Jean Marchand—take your pick: ‘You want to what? What’s an AIM? An Aviation Information Manual to replace that old Air Regulations book—won’t that take years to create? ‘You say, it is something for pilots to read while flying, now that airplanes fly themselves, and you will make it so it fits into those square suitcases they carry, the ones with stickers all over them? Well, go ahead. It will keep you busy until retirement. ‘By the way, here’s a list of my best friends—they are all lawyers. Tell them, so sorry but they will have to go back chasing ambulances—they are all fired from the Canadian Transport Commission (CTC). We are deregulating aviation in Canada. ‘And, another thing, change that TCA name to Air Canada and it is no longer the Ministry of Transport—let’s go with TC instead—it washes in Quebec— and by the way, pick me a rose on your way out. I want to do a pirouette with it in my teeth.’ Jack Schofield has written several books on British Columbia coastal aviation and has adapted his first two books to a TV screenplay.

2014 Subaru Outback: Ruggedly versatile Subaru’s 2014 Outback is available in five trim levels— 2.5i Convenience, Touring and Limited Packages as well as a 3.6R model available with or without the Limited Package. The Outback 2.5i Convenience is also available with a PZEV option, while the Outback 2.5i and 3.6R with Limited Package features an optional EyeSight driver assistance system. The entry 2.5i Convenience model features a long roster of standard features, among them power-adjustable, foldable, heated body-colour door mirrors, fully automatic headlights, a 10-way power driver’s seat with heated front seats, voice-activated Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and streaming audio, a USB charging port, steering wheel cruise control and audio switches, a 60/40-split flat-folding rear seat, and an electronic parking brake with Hill Holder system. The electronic Hill Holder system holds the vehicle in place until the driver applies the throttle to pull away from an inclined stop. Outback models with the Touring Package add additional amenities such as a power tilting and sliding glass sunroof, windshield wiper de-icer, leatherwrapped steering wheel, dual-
zone automatic climate control, a 6-speaker system and a cargo tray. Additionally, Outback 3.6R models also include a power tilting and sliding glass sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 6-speaker system and dual-zone automatic climate control. Both Outback 2.5i and 3.6R models with the Limited Package additionally come equipped with leather upholstery, an autodimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a touchscreen GPS navigation system with seveninch LCD display, voice-activated controls and navigation, XM Satellite Radio (subscription required), rear-vision camera, an SD card slot for convenient navigation map updates, harman/ kardon speakers and amplifier, and a four-way power front passenger seat. Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle Technology PZEV is a designation awarded to vehicles that meet strict emissions standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Subaru PZEV vehicles in Canada comply with the CARB Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle tailpipe standard (SULEV) and virtually eliminate fuel-system evaporative emissions. Compared to an average new vehicle, Subaru PZEV vehicles have significantly
cleaner exhaust emissions. In certain cases, vehicles meeting PZEV emission standards are even cleaner than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. Independent Suspension for Flatter Cornering All Subaru models feature a strut-type front suspension with a wide track and long wheel travel. The double-wishbone rear suspension, also on all models, handles rough roads and sharp corners with both poise and precision—ensuring maximum tire contact, minimum vibration and significantly improved ride quality. Vehicle Dynamics Control Standard on every Subaru, the Vehicle Dynamics Control system monitors and analyzes if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course via an array of smart sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel adjust automatically to assist in keeping the vehicle on course. A Vehicle Dynamics Control ‘off’ switch is useful for driving out of slushy roads, deep snow or very loose gravel. The ‘off’ position deactivates the system’s torque-reduction control, while the ABS and traction control remain active.

Safety technology The extensive roster of dynamic safety technology in the 2014 Outback includes standard four-wheel disc brakes with Subaru’s four-wheel, fourchannel, four-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) electronic stability system, as well as symmetrical full-time AllWheel Drive and Brake Assist. In emergency braking, drivers usually apply less pedal force than needed even if they react quickly. Brake Assist detects how quickly the driver has pressed the pedal, and if pedal velocity exceeds a certain level, Brake Assist immediately applies system hydraulic pressure up to the ABS limit to help increase brak-
ing effectiveness. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) is also standard. The EBD system automatically adjusts front/rear brake proportioning based on vehicle load and is more effective than conventional brake proportioning valves. In all Subaru models, the foundation for occupant protection is the advanced ring-shaped reinforcement frame unibody structure with a front-end configuration that disperses collision energy in three directions. This design forms a series of rings around the passenger compartment, providing protection in a variety of collision types. Hightension steel side-impact door beams and impact-absorbing

foam materials enhance sideimpact safety performance. Standard passive safety technology includes the Subaru advanced frontal air bag system (SRS), driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact air bags, and standard side curtain air bags. A rollover sensor can deploy the side curtain air bags if it detects a potential vehicle rollover. Whiplash-reducing front seats help reduce potential whiplash injury in a rear collision, while a collapsible brake pedal and impact-absorbing driver’s footrest help reduce lower leg injury in a frontal collision. maintenance was a Nissan Pathfinder with a noisy timing chain. Timing chains normally last a very long time, but this one was cut down in its prime—only 90,000 kilometres—by a lack of oil changes. Upon removing the access holes to the cam gears, it became immediately evident why this chain had failed at such a young age. Inside the cover there was a thick layer of baked on sludge, which usually occurs because of infrequent oil changes. a thorough cleaning process performed to remove the sludge. To be safe, a double oil change was done after the repairs to ensure that any loose particles of sludge were removed. After these repairs were completed, the engine sound was back to normal, though it is difficult to say whether any other components will fail early due to the previous neglect this engine suffered. Bottom line Oil should be regularly changed as it will save car own-
ers a lot of money in the long run. On another note, the Pathfinder had been purchased as a used vehicle, so the new owner was footing the bill for the previous owner’s neglect. This illustrates the importance of shopping wisely for a used car. Have a mechanic inspect it and be sure to obtain the owner’s maintenance records. If the maintenance records are unavailable or clearly show neglect then you would be wise to find a better vehicle.

for nearly a third of the company’s annual global sales. Previous generations were acclaimed in markets around the world for their emotive design, responsive and dynamic handling, environmental performance, safety, technology and excellent craftsmanship. The first generation Mazda (2003-09) changed market assumptions that the compact car segment consisted of only low-cost, throw-away vehicles. With its unexpected design, performance and quality the Mazda3 became a sports compact leader, with more than two-million units sold. The second generation (2010-13) further enhanced the Mazda3’s sporty driving essence, as well as improved its fuel economy consumption with the introduction of Skyactiv Technology. Also not taking a backseat was safety, in which the secondgeneration Mazda3 received the highest five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme and was named a Top Safety Pick by the U.S.’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The newest third-generation model, which will be on sale in the fall 2013, will be introduced with a choice of two gasoline engines: the Skyactiv-G 2-litre and Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre. New features An all-new human-machine interface system also will make its debut. This in-car infotainment system is meant to broaden the scope of the driving experience and was designed with ease of use and safety as top priorities, as well as ensuring the driver’s focus remains on the job at hand: driving. The 2014 Mazda3 also introduces several all-new safety systems under the umbrella known as i-Activsense. These technologies use sensing devices such as milliwave radars and cameras to support the driver in recognizing hazards, reducing the possibility of collisions and minimizing damage should accidents occur. While these systems will not eliminate accidents, the intent is to minimize them and reduce the severity of a crash. New safety technologies for the Mazda3 include a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS).

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will soon have the best view of Canada—from the air! The Airport Authority is creating a shared photo gallery of images collected from across Canada taken in-flight—an interesting way to dress up its facilities and tell the visual story
of our expansive and incredible country from high above. These images will live on the temporary walls of the Domestic Terminal’s A and B Piers, currently undergoing renovation to add gates, expand seating areas and improve passenger amenities. This ever-changing gallery
will also live online at yvr.ca/ YVRCanada. Participating in the Canada from the Air photo gallery is easy. Next time you are travelling to or from a Canadian destination
via YVR, snap an in-flight photo. Then share it via Twitter or email so it can be posted online and shared on the Domestic Terminal’s live gallery walls.

More shopping options for U.S. travellers Travellers headed to the U.S. from YVR are now able to purchase goods of up to $200 in the airport’s after-security area before their flight, thanks to a new agreement between Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). The new agreement increases the maximum value of each individual retail item sold in the airport’s U.S. postsecurity departures area from $100 to $200. By the end of 2013, the purchase limit per item will reach $400, making it possible for retailers to stock higher-value merchandise,

More than 10 years in the making, the Airport Authority championed the purchase
increase, working closely with USCBP and retail operators. “We are always working to match our retail and service options to our customers’ needs,” said Susan Stiene, director of commercial services for the Airport Authority. “We are proud of our partnership with USCBP and our business partners to develop this program and believe passengers will truly benefit from it.” After successful implementation at YVR, this new agreement will roll out in other Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance.

Last month’s winner: Stuart McDonald, Richmond Answer:
Sukhoi Su-35
The Sukhoi Su-35 is actually two heavily-upgraded derivatives of the Su-27 Flanker. Both are single-seat, twin-engine supermaneuverable multirole fighters, designed by Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi. The first Su-35 prototype, converted from a Su-27, made its maiden flight in June 1988. The latest version of Russia’s Sukhoi-35 fighter jet wowed crowds with gravity-defying demonstrations at this year’s Paris Air Show, held June 17-23, as the aircraft made its first appearance outside Russia.
