Icelandair will take off from Vancouver to more than 20 destinations in Europe starting May 13, 2014 and continue through October 12, 2014, with service twice weekly.

The YVR Retail Service Excellence Program is designed to encourage exceptional customer service and to recognize and reward those employees who truly deliver.

The 2013 second quarter results are in and have surpassed those of the first quarter, with seven YVR employees receiving a perfect score on their mystery shop surveys, compared with three in the first quarter.

Special recognition was also awarded to ICE Currency Exchange employee Reysan Reyes, who was nominated by a colleague for providing above and beyond customer service.

More than 100 golfers teed off on August 22, 2013 at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club for the YVR for Kids annual golf tournament.

The festivities continued late into the evening at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport for the annual YVR for Kids gala dinner and auction.

Proudly sponsored by YVR, this annual golf tournament, gala dinner and auction brings together the greater airport community to raise funds for local children’s charities.

Over the past two decades, this event has raised more

than $3.2-million for children’s charities in the Lower Mainland.

The 2013 event raised more than $250,000 and highlights included a golf tournament at the beautifully maintained Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond, live entertainment throughout the evening, highly sought after auction items and the appearance of honourary patron, B.C.-born Pamela Anderson, former Baywatch TV star (pictured below with YVR President and CEO Craig Richmond).

The Icelandair schedule for 2014 is the largest in the company‘s history and will increase by 18 per cent from 2013 with new gateways, new destinations and added frequency from several cities in North America and Europe.

Additionally, three Boeing 757 aircraft will be added, enlarging Icelandair’s fleet from 18 to 21 aircraft.

The 2013 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup event at Iona Beach is one of 20 shoreline cleanups being held across Canada to commemorate the program’s 20th anniversary.

From cigarette butts to sixpack holders, a startling amount of harmful litter washes up on British Columbia’s shores every year. As the Provincial Sponsor of the 20th Annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, Vancouver Airport Authority is doing its part to protect and clean up the waterways that surround Sea Island.

The kick-off event for the Lower Mainland is on Saturday, September 21 at 10am at Iona Beach Regional Park, on the north side of Sea Island.

Come out and join other volunteers to collect as much waste and litter as possible over a two-hour period. Volunteers will enjoy music, snacks and prizes awarded for the most obscure litter item, the heaviest bag of litter and other interesting discoveries.

Take Canada Line to Templeton Station, where shuttle buses will provide transportation to and from Iona Beach.

Part of Sea Island’s diverse and environmentally sensitive ecosystem, Iona Beach marks the spot where the Fraser River reaches the Strait of Georgia.

Migratory birds use the area as a feeding and stopover point along the Pacific Flyway, while the Strait is home to a unique, year-round population of approximately 85 killer whales (Orca) known as the Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW)—both important reasons to support the shoreline cleanup close to home.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup event runs September 21 – 29. This cleanup will be one of 20 specially designated public shoreline cleanups held across the country to commemorate the program’s 20th anniversary.

Vancouver Airport Authority

is also challenging other B.C. airports to participate in local cleanups.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, presented by Loblaw Companies Limited, is one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada. A conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Shoreline Cleanup aims to promote understanding of shoreline litter issues by engaging Canadians to rehabilitate shoreline areas through cleanups.

During its 20-year history, more than 500,000 volunteers have cleaned roughly 21,775 kilometres worth of shorelines— the equivalent length of crossing Canada three times end-to-end between Vancouver, B.C. to St. John’s, NL and collected approximately 1.2-million kilograms of shoreline litter—the approximate weight of 259 school buses.

Superintendent Johal has worked for CBSA for 10 years and has spent his entire career at YVR. “The truth of the matter is that working for CBSA is actually fun I’m one of those people who walk into work every day and say ‘I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do this!’ Being posted at the airport means I get

to meet people from all over the world and I’m able to make decisions that impact people’s lives.

Every day on the job presents new challenges and there is a lot of satisfaction knowing that the work I do serves the greater good.”

Superintendent Orie has worked for CBSA for 12 years, all of them spent at YVR. “No two days are ever the same. On

any given day, we are intercepting narcotics, child pornography, effecting arrest warrants or preventing criminals from entering Canada. Later that same day, we could be recovering a kidnapped child, providing first aid to someone in distress, facilitating the reunion of families or welcoming a future Canadian to their adopted country for the first time.”

Superintendent Johal: The training that I have received helped, but I am thankful to the other officers. When you are in an emergency situation your body starts pumping adrenaline and I can sincerely say that you start forgetting things. We worked as a team and talked the situation through as we went through all the steps, applying CPR and using the defibrillator machine.

Superintendent Orie: CBSA officers deal with challenging and dynamic situations repeatedly in the course of a shift. I was very proud of everyone involved.

They did exactly what was needed when it needed to be done.

Nearly three years ago, when my son was two, he stopped breathing early one morning as the result of an extreme febrile seizure. I had never heard of febrile seizures before nor was I able to recognize one. I gave my son CPR and he began breathing again. He spent a week in hospital and is now the picture of health. I remember how grateful I was at the time for the on-thejob first aid training that I had received.

••• Officer Lee has worked for CBSA for four-and-a-half years, stationed at YVR. Officer Lee enjoys the “opportunity to make a difference by ensuring national security protocols are met and conducted in a professional manner.”

Officer Mota has worked with CBSA for the past six years (all of which have been at YVR).

“The one thing I enjoy most in my line of work is talking to

I administered a shock. The officers then resumed CPR as the individual still did not appear to be breathing.

Officer Mota: Superintendent Johal then placed a face mask over the man’s face and administered one large breath. I saw the man’s diaphragm fill and I continued to administer more chest compressions Superintendent Orie: After one of the chest compressions, the man finally gasped deeply and began breathing on his own.

He was still not alert, but he was breathing on his own again.

Officer Mota: I had my hand in his and asked him to squeeze my hand if he could hear me, but he didn’t squeeze. I thought he might be brain dead, that maybe we were too late. I kept asking if he could hear me. I had a flashlight and shone it into his eyes. The AED then asked for everyone to stand back. I thought it was going to give him another shock, which I was afraid of since he was breathing and had a pulse. After the AED detected a heartbeat, we placed him back into recovery position.

Superintendent Orie: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived shortly thereafter and took over. Before they transported him to hospital, he was alert and responding to questions. When we heard his voice for the first time, we were definitely relieved.

Superintendent Johal: After this experience, I can say for certain that the eyes are a window for the soul. I literally saw the life leave his body and return when he started breathing again.

Officer Mota: The gentleman is currently recovering in VGH. I have called to give our best wishes for his speedy recovery.

Officer Lee: Our agency’s training helped prepare us for emergencies such as this. We were trained to remain calm and collected, assess the situation and act promptly and appropriately according to the situation.

The training we received gave us the skills to interpret and make the best decision for the person in need of assistance.

On July 30, 2013 four officers from Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) stationed at YVR were instrumental in saving a man’s life after he collapsed and became unconscious with no pulse. The quick reaction of the four officers, along with the response from many others, was an extraordinary demonstration of teamwork from the greater YVR community.

This month’s On Approach profile features CBSA Superintendent Colin Orie, Superintendent Jagdeep Johal, Officer Chris Mota and Officer David Q. Lee recounting the response effort from their combined perspectives.

••• Superintendent Johal: I was dealing with another matter when I heard the request over the radio for a superintendent to attend the point area. Nothing more was said other, but I could tell from the radio voice that something out of the ordinary was going on.

Superintendent Orie: Superintendent Johal, Officers Chris Mota and David Q. Lee and I arrived at the point area and we were informed that an individual was in medical distress in the airport’s carousel area.

Officer Lee: My immediate reaction was to attend to the person on the ground, probe for injuries and attempt to establish verbal communication.

Officer Mota: Officer Lee said that we needed to do CPR. I then started chest compressions.

This was my first time administering it to a victim. With each pump, I just kept thinking that I couldn’t let him die. There were many emotions going through my head, but my main priority was to keep doing the chest compressions. I don’t know how many I did before the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was administered.

Superintendent Orie: I retrieved the AED from a nearby wall and we connected it to the individual. Officers continued with chest compressions and rescue breaths, but a pulse could still not be located and he was still not breathing. The AED instructed that a shock was necessary. CPR was stopped and

Update Repaving of Russ Baker Way almost complete If your travels have taken you along Russ Baker Way over the past month, you will have noticed a fair bit of construction activity.

Crews are working day and night to repave Russ Baker Way between Miller Road and Inglis Drive as safely and quickly as possible. This work has had a significant impact on commuters who regularly use Russ Baker Way, residents of Burkeville whose neighbourhood access has been affected and cyclists who

have had to use alternate routes while biking on Sea Island.

Vancouver Airport Authority thanks all stakeholders who have been impacted by this project for their continued patience.

Crews are currently forecasting a project completion date of the second/third week of September.

Once complete, the repaved road will offer safer and more reliable access to and from YVR, Richmond and Vancouver for neighbouring residents,

local businesses, travellers and commuters.

YVR’s community ambassadors have been having fun this summer out in local communities meeting people and talking about everything YVR. Over the past three months, community ambassadors have been travelling around the Lower Mainland setting up the YVR information booth at 13 festivals, from Burkeville to Steveston in Richmond, Marpole to Stanley Park in Vancouver, as well as in White Rock and Port Moody to get to know their neighbours.

Back to school: A healthy start It’s September and the backto-school bell is sounding. As a parent, you want to help your child get off to a good start for the school year. Here is a selection of healthy tips for boosting your pint-sized pupil’s physical and emotional well-being.

Packing healthy lunches Avoid heavily processed snacks like cereal bars and chips.

Sure, it may be convenient to pluck a package from the pantry, but these products are usually loaded with sugar, salt, and saturated or trans fats—and their nutritional value is sometimes negligible.

Serve up natural goodness.

Whole-grain breads and crackers, fresh fruit and vegetables and cheese are all choice ingredients in a healthy lunch. You can even divvy them into snack-sized portions ahead of time to make for a quick morning grab.

Offer your child some fun with finger foods. Experiment with a variety of nutritious dips

and spreads for veggies and crackers like yogurt, salsa or humus. Boil an egg that can be peeled at lunchtime.

Detecting back-to-school stress There are many sources of back-to-school stress, includ-

ing adjustment to new teachers and classmates, an increase in homework, or just the transition to a different daily routine.

Sometimes stress has a more serious cause, such as bullying or a school-related phobia.

Signs your child may be stressed or anxious include: • clinginess, crying, or irritability • sudden bedwetting or daytime wetting • sleep disturbances • avoiding school or social

activities • sudden problems in school • nervous habits (twirling hair, chewing fingernails) • reverting to younger behaviours • frequent headaches or stomach aches.

If you notice your child is stressed, open up a dialogue.

Talk about coping techniques or solutions. Make sure your child is eating a well-balanced diet and getting enough nighttime sleep. Encourage physi-

cal activity, which is a great outlet for anxiety. Be sure to build some down time into your child’s routine.

Involve the teacher or principal in problem-solving, if appropriate. And check in with your child’s doctor if the stress seems unmanageable or excessive.

Above all, reassure your child, and be supportive with lots of encouragement.

In two separate decisions released last month, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) ordered Air Canada and Porter Airlines to provide reasonable compensation for disrupting a traveller’s flight plans.

The federal agency ruled that Air Canada’s 12-year-old bumping payout rate is outdated and doesn’t reflect the current price of airline tickets, accommodation and other incidental expenses.

According to the ruling, Air Canada now has to revise its denied boarding compensation

by September 18, 2013, to reflect compensation provisions that range from $200 to $800 cash— up from the current $100—or three times the amount in travel vouchers.

The breakdown in compensation is as follows: • Less than two-hour delay = 50 per cent of the base amount • Between two- and less than six-hour delay = 100 per cent of the base amount

• Six-hour delay or more = 200 per cent of the base amount • The base amount is established as $400.

“Passengers have a fundamental right to be informed about schedule changes that affect their itinerary and ability to travel and to be compensated or refunded in a reasonable fashion,” said Geoff Hare, chair and CEO of the CTA. “These decisions help ensure that consumers are protected when experiencing schedule changes while travelling with Air Canada and Porter.”

This compensation applies solely to involuntary denied boarding and does not relate to situations where a passenger volunteers to be denied boarding for whatever compensation Air Canada wishes to offer.

Air Canada has until September 18, 2013 to comply.

Air Canada spokesperson Isabelle Arthur said the airline will be fully compliant with the CTA’s decision and is revising its tariff policy according to the

terms of the decision.

In a separate decision, the CTA ordered Porter to refund fares paid for cancelled domestic flights and provide compensation for reasonable expenses when flights are delayed. The CTA called Porter’s current policies “unclear” and said the airline should make “reasonable” efforts to inform passengers of schedule changes and the reasons for their occurrence.

Toronto-based Porter now has until September 30, 2013, to revise its tariff provisions for domestic flights in accordance with the CTA decision.

The rulings stemmed from complaints filed by Gabor Lukacs, a former University of Manitoba math professor, who has challenged several airline industry practices. Lukacs called the rulings victories for passenger rights.

The ruling does not affect WestJet, Canada’s second largest airline, because it does not overbook flights.

But here’s a series of quirky facts that help illustrate the complex, immense and interesting nature of YVR. • YVR welcomed 17.6-million passengers in 2012, more than the entire population of Holland (16.5 million).

• More than 23,600 people come to work on YVR’s Sea Island home every day. And because population comparisons are fun, that’s the population of Powell River, or twice the population of Terrace (a B.C. destination that’s served by 54 weekly flights out of YVR, by the way).

• In 2012, YVR handled 261,000 take-offs and landings—an average of one aircraft movement every two minutes.

• YVR has two main parallel runways oriented in an east-west direction and one

cross-wind runway which, combined, total 8,759 metres in length—long enough to accommodate 125 Boeing 747s lined up nose to tail.

• On average, more than 46,000 bags travel through YVR’s baggage system daily—approximately one every 0.5 seconds.

• The total footprint of YVR’s Main Terminal Building is 135,138 square metres, a space large enough to accommodate about three-and-ahalf BC Place Stadiums, or 205 NHL hockey rinks.

In-terminal fun took off this summer YVR Take-Off Fridays have retired to the hangars for another year.

This year’s in-terminal celebrations, which featured nine jam-packed Fridays’ worth of free family fun, kicked off with YVR’s first-ever paper airplane workshop and competition.

Throughout July and August, hundreds of children and their accompanying parents flocked to YVR every Friday to spot planes from the Observation Area’s floor-toceiling windows, hug a fuzzy mascot or two and happily stand in line for their favourite balloon animal courtesy of the Cool Balloon Guy. Great lunch specials, a $5 parking special and the easy access offered by Canada Line made YVR a perfect day-trip destination for Lower Mainland families.

YVR first airport to open Automated Passport Control to Canadians Automated Passport Control, an innovative technology solution developed by Vancouver Airport Authority in conjunction with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is now available to Canadian passport holders travelling to the United States from YVR. Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced this first-of-its kind program at YVR earlier this year. The program was initially only open to U.S. passport holders but is now available to Canadian passport holders travelling to the U.S. for temporary business or pleasure.

“Vancouver Airport Authority is constantly looking for ways to move people and bags through YVR more efficiently,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport

Authority. “Automated Passport Control is just one of the many examples of homegrown innovation developed here at YVR that improves the travelling experience. Because of the demonstrated success of Automated Border Clearance and now Automated Passport Control, other airports are approaching us to help them implement these YVR-designed programs.”

Automated Passport Control is an expedited customs entry process that allows eligible passengers travelling from YVR to the U.S. to clear Customs and Border Protection more efficiently, while still ensuring the same high standard of safety and security.

Since the launch at YVR, Vancouver Airport Authority has provided the technology to Chicago Department of Aviation

For the 2013 winter season, Sunwing has increased its fleet substantially by leasing additional aircraft on a short-term basis from Thomson Airways (United Kingdom), Travel Service Airlines (Czech Republic), Jetairfly (Belgium), and TUIfly (Germany).

The Canadian government has unveiled a new policy to promote Canadian employment and limit wet leasing in the air industry.

Wet leasing allows Canadian companies to lease not just a foreign aircraft but also its crew, maintenance and other essential elements.

Last year, two Canadian airlines used wet-leasing arrangements with foreign carriers.

While maintaining the highest safety and security standards, the new wet-leasing policy will ensure reciprocity with foreign jurisdictions, promote fairness in the air industry, and provide flexibility to meet Canadians’ seasonal demand for air services.

“Our government has listened to the views expressed

by Canadians and air industry stakeholders with regard to wet leasing,” said Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport “This new policy strikes a balance by imposing limits, while preserving some flexibility for Canadian airlines to meet travellers’ seasonal demands for air service.”

The new policy is crafted to

do the following: • maintain Canadian safety and security standards • impose a cap of 20 per cent of a Canadian carrier’s fleet that can be wet-leased from a foreign company for periods of more than 30 days • require reciprocity for Canadian airlines seeking opportunities in other jurisdictions • allow some flexibility for Canadian airlines to meet Canadians’ seasonal demand for air travel and • promote a stable and predictable operating environment for the Canadian aviation industry by providing clear limits on the use of wet-leasing.

“We are ensuring that Canadian airlines have reciprocal opportunities to wet-lease their aircraft in foreign jurisdictions and create employment for Canadians abroad,” said Minister Raitt. “Above all, we are preserving our focus on the safety and security of Canada’s air services.”

Wet leases are regulated by

the Canadian Transportation Agency based on provisions found in the Canada Transportation Act and the Air Transportation Regulations. The new wet-lease policy complements these existing regulations with regards to wet-lease applications in Canada.

To coincide with its latest ad campaign called To Fly. To Serve, British Airways (BA) has calculated the essential people involved in processing each passenger in their travel. It includes 96 different roles, across 18 different departments, using more than 11 external suppliers in the process.

The figures rise to 107 roles for premium customers, which can include the additional benefits of fast-track boarding, lounge access and personal meet and greets.

Looking at just one strand in the chain highlights the process involved to make flying a seamless process.

For instance, the fish pie served to customers on board started out at Severn and Wye smokery in Gloucestershire,

where fish is farmed. At Gate Gourmet in London, meal trays are assembled and dishes freshly prepared ahead of flying. Kuehne and Nagel deliver cutlery and tablewear for the meal trays.

The menu has been considered for quality, taste and seasonality in advance by Mark Tazzioli, British Airways menu manager.

On board, a member of cabin crew prepares and delivers the meal. Once enjoyed, it’s returned to the aircraft kitchens and loaded into containers. When the aircraft lands, the containers are offloaded and returned to Gate Gourmet and the process starts again.

Before flying, there are 23 crucial roles behind the scenes working to ensure everything is in place for the flight. On flight day, there are 38 people that contribute directly to getting a pas-

senger in the air.

On board, there’s an average flight team of 16 people, including cabin crew, captains and senior first officers. Upon landing, there are 19 people to ensure a passenger’s safe arrival.

On board a typical long-haul BA Boeing 747 flight, there will be 1,263 items of metal cutlery, 735 glasses, 233 toothpicks, 337 copies of magazines, 2,000 ice cubes, 99 full bottles and 326 quarter bottles of wine, 58 toilet rolls, 337 donation envelopes for BA’s prescribed charity and 40 skyflyer packs for children.

Summit Softball Slam

Named after the Roman god of war, Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the solar system. It is often described as the red planet because the iron oxide

on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Its surface features are reminiscent of the craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps found on Earth.

WestJet to purchase 65 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft WestJet has reached a preliminary agreement to purchase 65 Boeing 737 airplanes, consisting of 40 737 MAX 8s and 25 737 MAX 7s, with delivery to begin

in September 2017.

The pending order, valued at $6.3-billion at current list prices, is a key component of the Calgary-based carrier’s strategy

to optimize and modernize its fleet.

The 737 MAX series is due to enter production in 2015, with deliveries to customers starting

The 4th annual Hope for Kids Softball Slam event, held last month at the King George Park in Richmond, raised more than $11,000 for the charity.

The Hope for Kids charity began as a result of the massive 2004 tsunami that occurred off the coast of Thailand and surrounding countries in the Indian Ocean.

Rubina Wong, an employee of Summit Customs Brokers, was vacationing in Thailand when the tsunami hit and unfortunately did not survive. A group of Wong’s family, co-workers and friends banded together to create the non-profit group to

build a daycare in Lam Kaen, Thailand, one of the areas affected by the tsunami.

The daycare was built in 2006 and since then, the charity has held annual events to raise money to aid needy children in the Richmond community.

This year’s annual softball event, held under the auspices of Summit Customs Brokers, included participation by members of the airport community and the support of sponsors and volunteers, with whom the event would not have been such a success.

Newfoundland: Where history and modern culture meld

Newfoundland was a natural stepping stone when Europeans visited the Americas. A Norse explorer, Leif Erikson, established a settlement on the northern tip in 1000, and St. John’s harbour was visited by John Cabot for Henry VII in 1497.

Drawn by history, my wife and I left YVR on July 18 for Toronto (YYZ) aboard AC 142, flying thence to Fredericton, NB (YFC) on AC8958. On the July 20, AC7342, an interesting Beechcraft 1900D, took us to Halifax (YHZ) to catch AC8884, a Dash 8-100, where we landed at Deer Lake (YDF) beside the TransCanada Highway.

We rented a car—prearranged well in advance to depart from St John’s airport (YYT)—and drove up the spectacular Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, reaching the town of St Anthony on our fourth evening.

On our way there, adventures included stopping for a moose to cross the road, hiking the sterile, Mars-like Tablelands of Gros Morne National Park, exploring the uplifted fresh water fjord— Western Brook Pond—and sampling a theatre festival.

In Port au Choix (pop. 839), we enjoyed a meal at the Anchor Café listed in a guide book as

one of the best places to eat in the province.

St. Anthony was our base to see Erikson’s settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site operated by Parks Canada, which is visited by 30,000 people annually. Nearby, we found a new statue of Erikson near the excellent Norseman Restaurant, and visited Norstead—a reconstruction of a Viking Age settlement.

Our next destination was a 306-kilometre drive to Gander.

On the way there, we made a detour to visit the town of Botwood.

From 1937 to 1945, BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) and Pan American used Botwood as a terminal for their commercial flights to Europe. The first commercial flight from here being a Boeing 314 flying boat, made legendary by author Ken Follett in his novel Night over Water. A Pan Am building described in the novel is now part of The Botwood Heritage Centre.

Some of the famous individuals to have overnighted at Botwood were Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

We lunched at the waterfront

near one of the most-widely used seaplanes of WWII, a preserved PBY Catalina Canso.

From Botwood, we continued to Gander, where we visited the North Atlantic Aviation Museum, which details the affection that developed between the people of the town and the thousands stranded when 39 heavy aircraft suddenly arrived on 9/11.

While there, we also visited the Gander airport terminal (YQX), opened by the Queen in 1959. There are excellent displays and a splendid mural can be seen from the Public Observation Area.

Accommodation was in short supply in Gander as a plane load of U.S.-military personnel added to the tourists. Indeed, loading our car to leave, we spotted a USAF C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft climbing eastward.

From Gander, our eastern adventure included Gambo, visiting the Smallwood Interpretation Centre and learning about the achievements of the “last father of Confederation.”

We hiked in Terra Nova National Park, enjoying the Coastal Trail as much as we had enjoyed the Tasman trail in New Zealand.

visiting historic Trinity, named in 1501, and we went on the splendid Skerwink cliff trail at Port Rexton.

Before concluding with three nights in St. John’s we went across country to Ferryland.

There, archaeology is uncovering the 1621 Colony of Avalon. We hiked to the splendid lighthouse through fog for refreshments.

Other visited Signal Hill, where Guglielmo Marconi

received the first Trans-Atlantic radio Morse code message in 1901. The following day, we headed to Cape Spear, continental North America’s most easterly point.

We woke to fog on our final day and our flight was slightly delayed because of a power outage at the St John’s terminal.

After driving 2,567 kilometres in Newfoundland, we returned early to YVR’s welcom-

ing Gate 44, via YYZ on AC 125 (Airbus 320) and AC 115 (Airbus330).

We applaud Newfoundland as a destination, there is much to do and see and people are courteous and friendly. Do make your bookings well ahead, though, rental cars and accommodation can be scarce at times.

Disney Cruise Line bans smoking on balconies As of November 15, 2013 Disney Cruise Line will no longer allow passengers to smoke cigarettes, cigars and other smoking products outdoors on cabin balconies.

Disney Cruise Line has never allowed smoking in guest staterooms and smoking (including the use of electronic cigarettes) is only permitted in designated areas of the ship.

Guests who are found smoking in their staterooms or on their balconies will be charged a US$250 stateroom

recovery fee.

The recovery fee covers deep cleaning that includes air filter replacement, carpet extraction and the cleaning and replacement of drapes, comforters, blankets and pillows, along with veranda cleaning and maintenance.

Boeing forecasts increased global demand for pilots and technicians

The commercial aviation industry will need more than one-million new pilots and technicians to support the expanding demand for new airplane deliveries over the next two decades, according to projects by Boeing.

The Boeing 2013 Pilot and Technician Outlook projects that by 2032 the world will require 498,000 new commercial airline pilots and 556,000 new commercial airline maintenance technicians.

“The urgent demand for competent aviation personnel is a global issue that is here now and is very real,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president of Boeing Flight Services. “The key to closing the pilot and technician gap in our industry is enhancing our training with the latest, cutting-edge technologies to attract and retain young people interested in careers in aviation.”

The 2013 outlook projects significant increases in pilot demand—compared to previ-

ous forecasts—in all regions except Europe, which declined slightly over last year’s outlook. Overall, the demand is driven by steadily increasing airplane deliveries, particularly single-aisle airplanes, and represents a global requirement for about 25,000 new pilots annually.

Global demand for technicians remains significant, at approximately 28,000 new technicians required annually. However, the introduction of more efficient and smarter airplanes will require fewer mechanics over time, as aging aircraft—which typically require more maintenance—are retired from service.

New airplane technologies featuring more advanced components are likely to lead in some areas to lower maintenance requirements and corresponding lower technician demand.

Projected demand for new pilots and technicians by global region:

• Asia Pacific – 192,300 pilots and 215,300 technicians • Europe – 99,700 pilots and 108,200 technicians • North America – 85,700 pilots and 97,900 technicians • Latin America – 48,600 pilots and 47,600 technicians • Middle East – 40,000 pilots and 53,100 technicians • Africa – 16,500 pilots and 15,900 technicians • Russia and CIS – 15,200 pilots and 18,000 technicians “This is a global issue that can only be addressed by industrywide innovation and solutions,” said Carbary. “We need to attract more young people to careers in aviation by continually looking at innovative ways to train pilots and technicians, moving away from paper and chalkboardbased learning to incorporate tablets, eBooks, gaming technology and three-dimensional models.

VIFF 2013 will feature 341 films from 75 countries, of which more than 200 of which will be

feature-length. The line-up will include 92 Canadian films, which were selected from 800-plus Canadian submissions. Films will be shown at seven theatres in Vancouver: The Centre for Performing Arts; Cinematheque; Cineplex Odeon International Village; Rio Theatre; SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts at Woodwards; Vancity Theatre, and Vancouver Playhouse.

The only way to be 100 per cent certain would be to replace them. However, this would be an extremely expensive procedure, costing thousands of dollars.

that the explosive portion of the airbags is made to last for a long time. An experimental crash was done with a 1972 Impala, during which the air bags deployed as designed.

Similarly, no airbags installed in the early 1990s have failed to deploy properly in a collision (as long as the system was function-

ing properly).

In my opinion, if your air bag warning light is out, you can assume all systems are a go. If you really want the ultimate in safety in a 10-year-old car, you could replace the airbags and pretensioners. Cost would be as much as a large down payment on a new car.

Many cars have large interior warning labels, which state “Your airbag system must be inspected by the dealer when 10 years old.”

Just what does this mean, and how important is it to heed this warning label?

The airbag or supplemental restraint system (SRS), as it is frequently called, consists of crash sensors, placed in strategic locations throughout the vehicle—a central control unit; the airbags themselves; and seatbelt pretensioners.

The airbags and pretensioners are activated by an electrical signal that is sent from the control unit during a collision.

This triggers explosive charges, instantly deploying the airbags and tightening the seat belts.

The supplemental restraint system has evolved from early days when vehicles had only one airbag protecting the driver.

These were usually installed on expensive luxury cars. The exception was Chevrolet, which sold some Impala models in the 1970s that offered airbags as a very rare option.

Today, all cars have airbags for both front occupants and many vehicles have multiple side airbags and rear seat airbags.

Working with the airbags are seat belt pretensioners that pull the seat belt tight when the airbag is activated.

The airbag system is rather like disability or critical illness insurance—it is something you hope to never use, but if you do,

it needs to work.

So what can go wrong, and what about the 10-year warning?

Firstly, let’s explore what can go wrong. The airbag system has many electrical components and these are continuously monitored by the control unit. If any concern occurs, it will illuminate the warning lamp on the car’s instrument panel. Should this light remain on after vehicle start-up, it is likely that the airbags will not deploy in the event of a collision.

The control unit does not, however, monitor the explosive components of the system. What can be known for certain is that if the airbag warning lamp goes out after the car is started, then all electrical components of the

A trans-continental Electronic Vehicle (EV) rally, which started in Seattle, Washington on Sept. 3, 2013, rolled out of Vancouver’s Concord Pacific Place on September 4, marking the launch of the Canadian leg of the rally.

The Airport Authority is creating a shared photo gallery of images collected from across Canada taken in-flight—an interesting way to dress up its facilities and tell the visual story

of our expansive and incredible country from high above.

These images will live on the temporary walls of the Domestic Terminal’s A and B Piers, currently undergoing renovation to add gates, expand seating areas and improve passenger amenities.

More shopping options for U.S. travellers Travellers headed to the U.S. from YVR are now able to purchase goods of up to $200 in the airport’s after-security area before their flight, thanks to a new agreement between Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP).

The new agreement increases the maximum value of each individual retail item sold in the airport’s U.S. postsecurity departures area from $100 to $200.

By the end of 2013, the purchase limit per item will reach $400, making it possible for retailers to stock higher-value merchandise,
