Boeing’s participation at last month’s 2013 Dubai Airshow was marked by the launch of the 777X—the world’s largest twin-engine jetliner—and the announcement of historic orders and new strategic agreements signed with key partners in the Middle East and around the world. Boeing chairman, president and chief executive officer Jim McNerney launched the 777X with 259 orders and commitments worth more than $95-billion at list prices, placing the 777X as the largest product launch in commercial jetliner history by value. Key innovations in the 777X are an all-new composite wing based on the innova-

tive wing developed for the 787 Dreamliner, aerodynamic advances such as a hybrid laminar flow control vertical tail and natural laminar flow nacelles and all-new GE9X engines developed by GE Aviation. The 777X’s efficiency directly links to exceptional environmental performance. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced as fuel is consumed. This means the reductions in

fuel use will result in equivalent cuts in carbon dioxide emissions. Two models comprise the 777X family—the 777-8X, with approximately 350 seats and a range capability of more than 17,223 kilometres; and the 777-9X, with approximately 400 seats and a range of more than 15,186 kilometres. The 777-8X competes directly with the Airbus A3501000 while the 777-9X is in a

class by itself. At 71 metres, the 777X composite wing has a longer span than today’s 777-300ER. Its folding, raked wingtip delivers greater efficiency, significant fuel savings and complete airport gate capability. In addition, it allows access to the entire range of gates currently accessibly by the 777-300ER. Adding 787 technologies in the flight deck, flight controls and other systems is just the

beginning. The 777X implements 787 technologies where they add value to Boeing customers and increase commonality across Boeing’s twin-aisle product family. Boeing is exploring a number of innovations that will advance the passenger experience. For example, the company will reposition and resize windows to provide more interior ambient light and provide passengers with better views outside the cabin. New interior architecture makes the 777X cabin even more spacious, leveraging the airplane’s cross-section—the widest in its class. The 777X is targeted for first delivery in 2020.

Holiday travel plans? Make a list and check it twice Travelling through YVR this holiday season? From check-in to takeoff, follow these tips to keep your spirits bright. Most airlines allow check-in up to 24 hours in advance of your flight. While you’re online selecting seats, book your airport parking while you’re at it. JetSet offers the lowest onairport parking rates when you book online at yvr.ca. Follow the bright orange roadway signs to reach the lot. From there, a comfortable, complimentary 24-hour shuttle whisks you and your bags to the terminals in as little as five minutes. Don’t put wrapped gifts in your checked luggage. They

may be opened during the security screening process. Luckily, you can pick up a few last-min-

ute stocking stuffers at YVR and have them beribboned at complimentary gift-wrapping stations

located after security in C-Pier, U.S. Departures and International Departures. Stations are open 9am to 3pm, from December 12 to 24. Leave a little extra time to make your way through the airport arrival, check-in, bag-drop, security screening and customs processes—particularly if you’re travelling with kids or en masse. While the Airport Authority team is working hard to get travellers through the airport quickly and pleasantly, some congestion is inevitable, especially on the busy travel days leading up to Christmas. New to YVR this year is a holiday coat check service— particularly helpful if you’re headed to a warm-weather clime and don’t want to lug along your down coat. Offered by CDS Baggage Storage and located on Level 2 of the Domestic and International terminals, coats can be stored for $1 per coat per day, or $5 per coat per week. Children’s play areas are just waiting to be climbed and clambered—by children, that is—while waiting to board. Meanwhile, tired parents can sip an eggnog latte while supervising from a comfy seat in the gate area. A list of play areas is available on yvr.ca. If you or a loved one requires a little extra assistance travelling through the airport, YVR’s new Airport Butler can help. Simple services like check-in assistance, golf cart transportation to the gate, access to a pay-per-use lounge or even help with airport shopping and dining options can make a big difference. And keep an eye out for Santa Claus and an ear open for local musicians who will be spreading cheer throughout the public areas of the terminal. For more information on these services and more, check out the Shopping, Dining & Services section on yvr.ca.

WestJet soars to new heights with Magic Plane

WestJet’s custom-painted Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 series aircraft features Sorcerer Mickey. (CNW Group/WestJet).

WestJet, WestJet Vacations and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts (Canada) have pulled back the curtain on its most exciting adventure yet—a custompainted Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 series aircraft featuring Mickey Mouse in his most famous role, Sorcerer Mickey, along with the Cinderella castle. Known in the social media world as the #MagicPlane, the aircraft performed its inaugural

flight earlier this month, flying members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada from various Canadian cities, along with club chaperones and WestJet volunteers, to Orlando, Florida, for three days of fun at Walt Disney World Resort, pay-it-forward charity activities, teambuilding and leadership training. WestJet, WestJet Vacations and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts (Canada) first forged a relation-

ship in 2004, based on a shared vision of creating memorable experiences. “We are very proud of our work with Disney and everything we’ve done together over the years to enrich the lives of our guests,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO at the aircraft’s unveiling. “With the Magic Plane, we are soaring to new heights, offering guests of all ages the chance to share the

skies with one of the world’s most beloved and iconic figures. We also look forward to having fun with our guests on the ground as they see the Magic Plane flying over their communities and at airports across our expanding network.” The Magic Plane will fly throughout WestJet’s 88-city, 18-country international, trans-border and domestic network.

The two sides of the aircraft are mirror images of each other in all aspects but one. (CNW Group/WestJet)

Fun facts about WestJet’s Magic Plane • There are a total of 36 different paint colours on the aircraft. • It took a team of 26 people 24 days working around the clock to paint the Magic Plane. • The painting crew consumed more than 150 doughnuts over the 24 days. • The painting crew consisted of people from four coun-

tries, five states, two provinces and 12 cities. • The cookies that will be served on board the Magic Plane are a special treat in the shape of Disney characters. • Over the next five years, the Magic Plane will fly more than 400,000 guests a total of nearly eight-million kilometres.

The interior of WestJet’s Disneythemed Magic Plane features head-rest covers with stars on them. (CNW Group/ WestJet)

No-frills airline proposed for Western Canada

Artist’s rendering of the livery for proposed ultra low-cost airline Jetlines.

A group of aviation veterans is working to launch an ultra low-cost, Vancouverbased airline called Jetlines, which would offer flights throughout Western Canada. The new airline will be modelled after low-cost carriers such as Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines in the U.S. and Irelandbased Ryanair, all of which offer no-frills flights at very low prices.

The vision of David Solloway, Jim Scott and Dix Lawson, Jetlines aims to start by offering low-cost service to areas such as Prince Rupert, Kamloops, Edmonton, Regina and Winnipeg. Future plans are to fly internationally to Orlando and Las Vegas in the U.S., and to the Mexican destinations of Cabo San Lucas and Cancun.

“We think there’s a vacuum,” said Solloway, whose aviation background includes positions at Canadian Pacific Air Lines and Oasis Hong Kong Airlines and an advisory role with Air China. “We think we can fill it [the lowcost airline vacuum] as a British Columbia-based airline.” Jetlines launch will be largely dependent on how much interest the founders can generate from

private investors and the commercial capital market. Seed money of one-million dollars is being raised through Robson Capital Markets Advisory, with plans to raise $25-million through Salman Partners Inc. for the airline’s launch. A further three-stage plan to raise $25-million in each stage is planned. The plan calls for the airline to launch with two Airbus A319s in the fall of 2014 and, using a fleet of A319s and A320s, expand to 16 aircraft by 2017.

Federal government recognizes Canadian volunteers The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism, marked International Volunteer Day earlier this month by applauding the millions of Canadians who give generously of their time to volunteer and help others. “I have seen the truly exceptional work volunteers do every day to support those in need, and for this we are all very thankful,” said Minister Kenney. “Volunteers are a vital pillar of our society—helping to improve the well-being of Canadians and their communities.” The value of volunteers’ time in Canada is equivalent to 1.1-million full-time jobs annually, with more than 13-million people volunteering their time through a group or organization. Volunteers provide a number of services, ranging from fundraising, to coaching children’s sports teams, to supporting notfor-profit organizations. Nearly 400 active volunteers speaking a total of 35 languages provide volunteer services at YVR. These volunteer ambassadors are easily recognizable in their distinctive green jackets or vests—Green Coats—and, of course, by their warm smiles. YVR Green Coats go out of

their way to help reunite passengers, give directions to those in a hurry and help weary travellers. Their services are one of the reasons that YVR has been voted Best Airport in North America four years in a row. The government encourages volunteerism by building partnerships across sectors and leveraging new ideas and sources of funding, such as in the New Horizons for Seniors Program and the Social Development Partnerships Program. In 2012, the Government of Canada celebrated the first annual Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards, aimed at recognizing the exceptional contributions of volunteers, not-for-profit organizations and businesses to improving the well-being of Canadians and their communities. For more information on the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards, including the announcement of future award recipients and the next call for nominations, visit pm.gc.ca/awards.

Travel.gc.ca integrates the content and services of 12 federal government departments and agencies into a single Government of Canada website, providing a one-stop-shop source of information for Canadians travelling and living abroad. For the next few months, quarantine officers will be on site at YVR to help promote this useful website tool and educate travellers on how to help reduce the spread of infectious diseases, make informed decisions when travelling abroad and know what to do if they become ill after arriving home. The kiosk is located after security in the creek area of International Departures. It is staffed by Public Health Agency of Canada quarantine officers every Monday, Wednesday,

Keeping baby teeth healthy and strong is important to a child’s oral and overall health and development. Baby teeth begin to appear around six months and can last until a child is 13 or 14 years old. Baby teeth play an important role in a child’s nutrition, speech development and selfconfidence. They also play a significant role in guiding the placement of permanent adult teeth. Without proper care and attention, children can suffer from dental decay (cavities). Decay is caused when sugars in the mouth mix with plaque bacteria to create an acid that can destroy tooth enamel. When sugar stays longer in the mouth, more acid is produced and the risk of cavities is increased. Dental decay can be painful and can lead to infection and tooth loss. Children with dental disease may also have trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating and suffer emotional distress by feeling self-conscious about the way they look. Dental disease is not always recognizable. Pain is usually a sign that there is a problem, but very young children are not able to explain when they are in pain. The good news is that dental disease is preventable. Establishing healthy habits from an early age, including regular dental exams, can start your child on the path to good oral health. Set your child up for good dental health • Caring for the mouth starts early. Begin by cleaning your baby’s mouth using a wet cloth and gently wiping the gums to remove any leftover milk or formula. • Brush your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears and make sure you lift the lip to brush along the gum line. Young children cannot clean their own teeth. Brush and floss for them when they are very young and with them as they grow older. Children do not usually have the manual

dexterity to brush and floss themselves until they are at least eight years old. • Use a soft or very soft toothbrush. Choose an appropriate size for the age of the child. • Make brushing fun and develop a routine: brush at a specific time (after a bath or before a book); in a specific location (mom’s knee); or with specific cues (music, counting). • Use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste to protect the teeth from cavities. Children under the age of three should only use a smear (size of a grain of rice), while those over three can use a pea-sized amount. Encourage your children to spit out excess toothpaste. • Cavity-causing bacteria can be transferred. Avoid the sharing of soothers or toothbrushes. • Regardless of age, discourage grazing on sugary foods and drinks throughout the day or overnight. For example, constant and slow sipping on milk-filled bottles or juicefilled sippy cups allows sugars to remain in the mouth and can lead to cavities. Use water instead. • Choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruit or nuts. What’s good for the body is good for the mouth. • The earlier a dental problem

is found, the easier it is to fix. Check your child’s mouth and visit the dentist regularly. • Look in your child’s mouth for signs of disease such as brown or yellow spots on the teeth. Other indications of possible dental disease include trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating and sensitivity to cold drinks and foods. • The first dental visit should take place by age one or within six months of when the first tooth appears. Through regular examinations, your dentist will monitor the development of teeth and gums to catch problems early and prevent disease. Starting dental visits early can also improve a child’s comfort level about visiting the dentist. Children learn by example, so if you look after your own teeth and gums, your children will, too! Dr. Amy Nunrha DMD is the primary practitioner at the Vancouver Airport Dental Centre. She welcomes people of all ages to her office, including children, and is comfortable performing dental treatment on children as young as three years of age. THE TIME IS... NOW!

If you have dental insurance, it’s important to know that your benefits typically expire at the end of the year. Policies generally have dollar maximums that do not carry over, creating a use-it-or-lose-it scenario. So, if you haven’t seen your dentist for awhile, the time is now!

Air Canada Cargo and Cargojet move towards commercial cooperation

Air Canada inflight attendant—The airline has filed an application with Transport Canada to reduce the number of flight attendants required on its narrow-body aircraft, similar to an exemption its rival, WestJet Airlines Ltd., received earlier this year.

CUPE, the union representing flight attendants at several Canadian airlines, is challenging the federal government’s decision to grant exemptions to the current ratio of one flight attendant for every 40 passengers on board Canadian airlines. Transport Canada has granted exemptions to Sunwing and WestJet. The federal government has also announced its intention to change the existing regulation, which would allow other Canadian airlines to switch to a ratio of one flight attendant for

every 50 passenger seats. CUPE has asked the Federal Court for a judicial review of Transport Canada’s decision to grant an exemption to Sunwing— CUPE represents Sunwing’s 1,000 flight attendants. “The criteria set out in the Aeronautics Act in order to grant such exemptions were ignored by Transport Canada,” said Paul Moist, national president, CUPE. “Granting exemptions to Sunwing and WestJet is clearly not in the public interest because it compromises the safety and secu-

rity levels currently in place.” In July, 2013, CUPE asked Air Canada to withdraw its request for an exemption from the ratio requirements. With the matter now before the courts, CUPE said that the government must put exemption requests by Air Canada and Air Transat “on ice.” CUPE represents more than 10,000 flight attendants employed by Air Canada, Air Transat, Calm Air, Canadian North, Canjet, Cathay Pacific, First Air and Sunwing.

Cargojet operates its network across North America each business night, utilizing a fleet of 13 all-cargo aircraft.

Air Canada Cargo and Cargojet have agreed to pursue strategic opportunities and increase cooperation in areas that would increase revenues, reduce operating costs and make the most of its current services to the cargo community.

The implementation of new strategic initiatives would be subject to Air Canada and Cargojet making any necessary filings, obtaining regulatory approvals and finalizing documentation.

Shell develops unleaded light aircraft fuel

|

DECEMBER

2013

Shell Aviation technologists have been carrying out an intensive internal laboratory programme, including in-house altitude rig and engine testing, to develop unleaded aviation gasoline. The two main types of aviation fuel are aviation turbine fuel (jet fuel) and aviation gasoline (Avgas). Jet fuel is used by larger, gasturbine-engine powered aircraft, while Avgas is used in smaller, piston-engine powered aircraft. Both types of fuel are produced to very stringent specifications. Avgas is one of the last common transportation fuels to con-

tain lead and is used by light aircraft and helicopters. It includes lead in its formulation to meet fuel specifications and boost combustion performance (known as Motor Octane rating). The development of a technically and commercially viable unleaded Avgas that meets these criteria has long been seen by the aviation industry as a significant challenge, due to the tight specifications and strict flight safety standards to which it must adhere. Working alliances formed by Shell with aviation engine manufacturer Lycoming and light aircraft manufacturer Piper have resulted in the development

of unleaded Avgas that meets all key Avgas properties—one that has a Motor Octane rating of more than 100, an industry standard. Shell will now engage the aviation industry, regulators and authorities, including the US Federal Aviation Administration, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to achieve approvals for the unleaded Avgas. Shell expects to also work with other original equipment manufacturers to continue the testing and refinement program as the approvals process progresses.

Bombardier to establish maintenance facility in China

China Express Airlines was the first regional airline in China to operate Bombardier CRJ900. The airline recently purchased an additional three CRJ900s, with options on a further eight aircraft.

Bombardier Aerospace and the Tianjin Airport Economic Area have signed a letter of agreement to increase aircraft maintenance services in Mainland China. The agreement is a first step toward the creation of a joint venture, which is intended to result in the construction of a maintenance facility in 2016. Located in Tianjin, China, the facility will support the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and associated activities and services for all Bombardier business aircraft and, subject to certain conditions, on Bombardier commercial aircraft. Under the joint venture, the facility will be operated using similar processes and procedures that govern Bombardier’s wholly owned Service Centre network worldwide. “China is an important market and we are excited and honoured to collaborate with the leaders of Tianjin,” said

Éric Martel, president, customer services and specialized and amphibious aircraft, Bombardier Aerospace. “We are eager to have the opportunity to show customers our strong commitment to bringing OEM-backed services to their doorstep. Tianjin Airport Economic Area’s experience and strong leadership reinforce the fact that this is the right partnership that will lead to an amazing customer experience.” Bombardier Aerospace and the Tianjin Airport Economic Area are working toward definitive agreements to be signed in 2014, subject to obtaining the required internal, governmental and third-party approvals. As part of its commitment to operators in China, Bombardier operates a localized customer service network, including a team of field service representatives and customer support account managers, four authorized service facilities, regional support offices in Shanghai,

Hong Kong and neighbouring Singapore, as well as two established parts depots in Beijing and Hong Kong. The fast-growing Bombardier fleet of Learjet, Challenger and Global jets occupies a one-third share of the business jet market in Greater China. Bombardier’s latest market forecast for the aviation industry predicts a total of 2,420 business jet deliveries destined for China over the next 20 years. To date, Bombardier business aircraft based in the Greater China region have reached more than 100 jets. In the 2013-2032 market forecast for commercial aircraft, Bombardier predicts that operators in Greater China will take delivery of 2,330 aircraft in the 20- to 149-seat commercial aircraft segment, making it the second most important region, following the United States. More than 40 of Bombardier’s commercial aircraft are currently in operation in Greater China.

streaming from their exhausts. The Aero Club did what they called banner-cutting, the banner being a roll of toilet paper thrown from the cockpit from about one metre. The streaming banner was then cut repeatedly by the spiraling biplane. It was a competition between the two club planes. The one who cut the toilet paper the most times won. Another competition involved attempting to burst a toy balloon. You would think that would be easy, but the vortex created at the propeller hub tends to push the balloon away and hitting it with the prop proved to be difficult. I tried this myself many years later using a Tiger Moth at an airshow in Chilliwack and I failed to burst the darned thing. I was able, however, to cut a streaming toilet paper banner three times. When owned by the City of Vancouver and called Vancouver Airport, the Vancouver City Council would complain bitterly in the press that the airport was a white elephant, costing the taxpayers too much money and wouldn’t it be nice if the feds took it off our hands, which they ultimately did. By this time, there were two of those lovely roundroofed hangars and an administration building located very close to where the South Airport is now situated. The “Rocket” was mounted on its pedestal right there as well ,making its own unique history. United Airlines was serving Vancouver with a Boeing 247 and Trans Canada Airlines (TCA)—now Air Canada—flew Lockheed 10s and Lockheed 14s. The method of navigation for these aircraft was called Radio Range and the cloudbreaking and approach system

was described to me by Maurice McGregor, TCA’s very first pilot, as “finding the lights of the fish cannery on the river before the fish cannery on the river found you.” The most interesting people at the airport in the immediate pre-war days were seven women pilots—all with instructor’s ratings. They travelled to Ottawa in 1940, responding to the call from the newly formed British Commonwealth Air Training Plan’s (BCATP) pleading for experienced pilots to become instructors to train service pilots. Each of the seven women had received a letter accepting them for the job, but when they showed up and were discovered to be female they were instead offered jobs as cooks! Gloria Steinheim, please copy. One of those seven women was a very handsome lady who was first introduced to me as Rollie Moore. She showed up as my aviation aerobatics instructor in 1946 and was great at aerobatics. She changed her name to Rollie Barratt in mid snap roll and later to Rollie Pierce—so her social life was very aerobatic, as well. Rollie worked at the Aero Club with another interesting person, an engineer named Ben Valerie. Ben looked after the club’s Tiger Moth and Cornell fleet and became famous around Vancouver, as his smiling face adorned many newspaper and magazines in ads for Molson’s beer. Ben’s face was his fortune and I would have to describe it as much like a catcher’s mitt, but it sold a lot of Molson’s. The chief flying instructor at See BC AVIATION HISTORY page 16

New aviation agreement signed between Canada and Taiwan

BC Aviation History from page 5

A United Airlines Boeing 247 on the apron in front of the administration and terminal building.

Taiwanese airline EVA Air’s long-haul flagship, the Boeing 777-300ER.

An agreement signed between Taiwan and Canada recently will expand the number of direct flights between the two countries and increase available seating capacity Under the agreement signed by Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) directorgeneral Jean Sen and Canadian Trade Office in Taipei executive director Kathleen Mackay, the number of passenger flights connecting the two countries could increase by up to 61 per cent over the next two years.

Under the previous aviation pact between the two countries, Taiwanese carriers were allowed to offer a total of 13 flights per week—including passenger and cargo flights. Taiwanese airlines will immediately be allowed to operate a total of 17 direct flights per week to Canada, as will Canadian carriers. Currently, China Airlines flies seven passenger flights to Vancouver, while EVA Airways flies three passenger flights to Vancouver and three to Toronto.

Starting November 2014, capacity will be further expanded when each country’s airlines will be allowed to operate a total of 21 flights per week. Additionally, under the new agreement restrictions on cargo flights between the Canada and Taiwan will be eased as Taiwanese carriers will be allowed to carry goods from Canada and transport them to a third country. “This arrangement recognizes the ongoing demand for the movement of people and

goods between Canada and Taiwan, and reflects a desire to improve upon our strong longterm economic and peopleto-people relationships,” said Mackay. There were 137,000 passengers flying between the two countries in 2012, an increase of approximately one per cent over 2011. Both CAL and EVA are assessing the possibility of increasing flights to Canada in light of the new agreement.

the club in those days was Len Milne who, during the war had been nick-named “Black Mike,” as he was the pilot who went from air force base to air force base washing out pilots who didn’t quite conform to his standard of excellence. Len went on to become an inspector with Transport Canada. I watched Len land a Tiger Moth one day that had its undercarriage fall apart right after takeoff. It was the most fabulous piece of flying skill I ever witnessed, but it was just all a day’s work for Black Mike. Ethyl, the Aero Club’s secretary, looked after all the aircraft bookings. She was in love with instructor Wilf Davies. The two of them were often to be found doing an “approach to limits” in the Link Trainer room. Ethyl was also in love with a little two-place Fleet Canuck, which she owned and leased to the club. One day it disappeared on a flight back from Calgary to Vancouver and was located

atop a mountain, the pilot having managed a nice emergency landing on the relatively flat snowcovered peak. Ethyl was broken hearted over the loss of her air-

plane, but the now famous “Mr.

Helicopter” Carl Agar came to the rescue. Ethyl’s Canuck was

lifted off the peak by helicopter

and soon returned to the Aero Club’s flight line.

The pilot who had managed

that mountain top landing didn’t fare as well, having to explain to

his wife why he had been flying around the country with a female nurse.

Alas, those days of red-

blooded people making history

at YVR have given way to Inertia

Guidance systems, black-box technology and pilots who, having never learned to cut toilet

paper banners or chase balloons,

really do let “George” do it, while they read comic books at nine thousand metres.

Completely redesigned, both Mazda3 and Mazda6 feature the full suite of Mazda SKYACTIV technologies and sport the KODO “Soul of Motion” design language. Both vehicles feature a slew of all-new technology with the safety-first i-ACTIVSENSE, capacitor-based regenerative engine braking i-ELOOP and MAZDA CONNECT, a nextgeneration, driving-focused vehicle connectivity system. “Mazda is honoured to again be part of Car and Driver’s 10Best list, a distinction that proves you don’t need to be the fastest, loudest, most powerful and expensive vehicle on the road in order to command one’s attention,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “Both Mazda3 and Mazda6 have been hard-nosed competitors through

and through, long being their segment’s benchmark in performance and driving dynamics to now also leading the way in fuel efficiency, safety and in-car technologies.” The 10Best nomination process has three official restrictions: the vehicle cannot exceed an $80,000 price tag; a sample vehicle must be available for testing by mid-September of the current calendar year; and the vehicle must be on sale to the public by January of the following calendar year. According to Car and Driver,

“These are the vehicles that offer the most value, that elegantly and comprehensively fulfill their missions and that engage their drivers in spirited conversation.” 2014 Mazda3 Mazda’s best-selling model worldwide with more than 3.5-million vehicles sold, the third-generation 2014 Mazda3 is available in two body styles— four- and five-door—and a choice of gasoline engines between the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre and 2.5litre. The former produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm,

while the latter boasts 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Regardless of body styles, transmissions and under-thehood performance, the Mazda3 offers one of the best fuel economy numbers in its class—up to an EPA-estimated 4.7L/km hwy for sedans when outfitted with the 2.0L engine. When equipped with the brawnier 2.5L, sedans offer an estimated 5.1 L/km. Pricing for the 2014 Mazda3 starts at $15,995 for four-door models.

2014 Mazda6 The 2014 Mazda6 solidifies its position in the premium mid-size sedan category. With its great driving dynamics, chiselled-chin design, awardwinning safety and best-in-class highway fuel economy, happiness comes standard with this

Orca Airways livery redesign by famed Canadian artist

JAL’s new Sky Suite 767 service PG

YVR-based Orca Airways has unveiled a newly refurbished Navajo Chieftain PA-21-350— the first in the company’s fleet to undergo extensive upgrades. The aircraft features new exterior paint design and original artwork by renowned Canadian First Nations artist and storyteller Roy Henry Vickers. Orca Airways plans to standardize the Roy Henry Vickers design as part of a complete refurbishment program for its fleet of more than 20 aircraft that includes Piper PA-31 Navajos and Beechcraft King Airs. “I’ve flown with Orca Airways for many years and

have enjoyed the attention to good service they provide,” said Vickers at the unveiling of the newly updated Navajo Chieftain. “Recently, I began to think of doing a design for the planes. The ocean, the orca dorsal fin and people were all components of the thought process that led to the design and artwork that I am honoured to have Orca Airways incorporating into its new look.” A family-owned airline, Orca Airways began operations in July 2005 providing air service from YVR to Tofino Airport and operating one Piper Navajo on this route. The airline soon began expanding to provide daily scheduled flights between Vancouver

and Vancouver Island, charter service, cargo service and Medivac services throughout North America. In addition to the exterior makeover, Orca Airways’ upgrades will include interior makeovers and new avionics equipment. “In addition to the truly beautiful exterior paint scheme, we are the first local carrier to have our passenger aircraft avionics systems upgraded to the Transport Canada TAWS (terrain avoidance) criteria, which will be mandated in 2014,” said Andrew Naysmith, president and CEO of Orca Airways. For more information about Orca Airways’ destinations, visit flyorcaair.com.

Ready to muster up some holiday spirit? Vancouver Airport Authority is calling on the YVR community to do just that this month, when it kicks off its annual Christmas Food Hamper Drive in support of Quest Food Exchange. The Christmas Food

Hamper Drive asks YVR businesses, aviation partners, employees and volunteers to donate holiday spirit in the form of a turkey dinner to those who would otherwise miss out. This year’s goal is to fill 400 YVR hamper bags with

turkey stuffing, canned veggies, soup, crackers, instant mashed potatoes, gravy, cookies, and cranberry sauce. The Airport Authority will donate a turkey for every hamper donated. See QUEST FOOD EXCHANGE page 3

For the past 27 years, Helijet, a locally based and operated aviation company, has offered regularly scheduled flights between Vancouver and Victoria. Starting with a single Bell 412 helicopter in 1986, the company has expanded to offer three primary lines of business: air medical services, charter services and scheduled helicopter services. Notably, revenues through these three core business lines have grown

by more than 21 per cent since 2011. “By focusing our energy into our three main lines of business and implementing various cost control measures, we’ve been able to progressively increase our revenue,” said Danny Sitnam, Helijet’s president and CEO. “However, we knew we needed to seek external financing as we look to pursue more ambitious growth targets in the next few years.”

A barely running Volkswagen Jetta TDI was recently brought to our shop. Prior to bringing the vehicle to us, several unsuccessful repair attempts had been made by those with limited skill. As always, our first step is diagnosis—the check engine lamp was on and revealed a stored code for low sensor voltage. We traced this to a fault with the turbocharger vane position sensor. The engine sensors should receive a fivevolt reference signal from the engine computer, but we were only getting a three-volt reading. That is, until we unplugged

the vane position sensor. The engine sensor in the VW TDI turbocharger is sold only as a complete part so the entire unit had to be replaced. While doing our diagnosis, we also removed the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve to inspect for excessive carbon deposits. What we found in this Jetta TDI was severe carbon build up, which required removal of the intake manifold to clean all the accumulated carbon deposits in

the intake ports. So much carbon had built up in the intake ports—normally 2.54-centimetres square—they were reduced to tiny passageways about 0.31-centimetres in diameter. Upon completion of these repairs, the sensor voltage was restored and the engine ran powerfully. Overall, the VW TDI Jetta is a very solid and reliable car. The diesel engine is well built and makes for a highly fuel-efficient vehicle.

Richmond moves forward with plans for new civic facilities

Richmond City Council has formally approved a $79.6-million plan to construct major new aquatic centre and older adults’ centre in Minoru Park by 2017. Council also endorsed an extensive public consultation program, which will ensure the community has input into the design and programming of the new facilities. “It is critical that we move forward with the construction of these new facilities to meet the needs of our growing community,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This new plan will ensure we can upgrade these important civic facilities without a disruption in service to the public and with minimal financial impact on our taxpayers.” Replacement of the aging Minoru Aquatic Centre and Minoru Place Seniors Centre were among Council’s top priorities for its current term. Parts of the Minoru Aquatics Centre are more than 50 years old and there is a lack of many modern amenities. The Minoru Place Seniors Centre is also considered inadequate to meet the long-term needs of Richmond’s rapidly

growing population of older adults. The new facilities will be built on a site near the southwest corner of Minoru Park. The adjacent Minoru Pavilion will be demolished and programming currently provided there will be incorporated into the new facilities. The City will finance the projects through use of reserves and borrowing of approximately $50.8-million to take advantage of low interest rates. Under this financing plan, there will be no property tax increases or operating budget impacts to fund construction of the new buildings. The City’s only current debt is scheduled to be paid off in 2014. As a result, Richmond will be able to reallocate current debt payments, along with casino revenue sharing funds, to cover borrowing costs. The two projects are part of a comprehensive $123.7-million major capital program, which will also see completion of a new City Centre Community Centre, now under construction, and replacement of the City’s No. 1 Fire Hall, which also houses Richmond Fire-Rescue’s administration offices.

Newcomers Guide now available in Punjabi The City of Richmond, along with the Richmond Intercultural Advisory Committee (RIAC), has presented a new Punjabi language version of the city’s Newcomers Guide—the fourth language in which the popular resource document is now available. The Newcomers Guide provides new Richmond residents with an up-to-date, central information source at their fingertips, informing them about the city in general, local government and services provided by different organizations. “The City of Richmond is always happy to welcome new residents and the Newcomers Guide is an important tool to help people settle in,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We are glad to present the Punjabi edition of the guide as according to the 2011 Census, nearly 6,000 of Richmond residents have

Punjabi as their mother tongue.” Punjabi is the fifth largest language group in the city after English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Filipino. The Punjabi version of the Newcomers Guide is a project that resulted from one of the recommendations of the Richmond Intercultural Advisory Committee’s 2013 Work Program, which was adopted by Council earlier this year. Richmond has a growing number of new residents and introducing the Newcomers Guide in different languages will make for a smoother transition into our community. The Guide is now available in four languages: English, Chinese, Filipino and Punjabi. These guides can be found online at richmond.ca/discover/about/ newcomersguide.
