All Nippon Airways’ first flight to Canada lands at YVR Japan’s largest airline is now offering daily non-stop service between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and YVR. All Nippon Airways’ (ANA) first flight to Canada landed at YVR on March 30, bringing with its some 350 new jobs at the airport and in B.C.’s hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions.

“YVR already offers the most capacity to Japan of any other

Canadian airport and ANA’s decision to fly here further strengthens our position as North America’s gateway of choice to the Asia-Pacific region,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority.

The new daily service to HND is made possible by recent liberalization to Canada’s air-service agreement with Japan. It increases YVR’s overall capacity to Tokyo by 30 per cent.

Air Canada rouge flight attendant uniforms include signature colours of burgundy and slate mixed with bright accent colours that are designed to create a fresh, relaxed style, in keeping with the airline’s vacation atmosphere onboard.

Air Canada’s leisure carrier subsidiary, Air Canada rouge, is expanding to Western Canada to serve a number of predominantly leisure markets from Vancouver and Calgary to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Anchorage.

Flights on these routes, currently operated by Air Canada, will be converted to Air Canada rouge service beginning this spring.

Air Canada rouge will also introduce new seasonal non-stop service between Vancouver and Phoenix beginning December 17, 2014.

“We are very excited to bring Air Canada rouge to Western Canada and launch new seasonal service between Vancouver and Phoenix,” said Ben Smith, executive vice president and chief commercial officer.

You’re invited: YVR’s Annual Public Meeting, May 8 As a community-based, notfor-profit organization, every year Vancouver Airport Authority hosts an Annual Public Meeting on the first Thursday of May. This year’s meeting will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 3:30pm in YVR’s East Concourse, Departures Level 3 of the International Terminal Building.

Members of the airport community, including YVR business partners and customers, are invited to attend and learn more about 2013 activities and 2014 plans.

Topics to be covered include the 2013 Annual Report and financial statements, operations and capital construction updates, recent air service announcements

and the latest on YVR’s commercial services program.

Representatives from the Vancouver Airport Authority Board of Directors and senior leadership will deliver presentations and answer questions.

Larry Berg Flight Path Park hosts Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival

Each spring, cherry blossom trees explode in a riot of pink that provides Sea Island with a beautiful landscape of colour.

Spring has finally arrived and not a moment too soon. To celebrate, YVR is hosting a Cherry Blossom Community Day—part of the annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (VCBF)—at Larry Berg Flight Path Park.

Everyone is invited to attend the Community Day on April 13 from 11:30am to 3pm and bring a picnic to enjoy underneath the canopy of pink cherry blossoms at Larry Berg Flight Path Park.

The Community Day will feature guest speakers, tours and prizes. And, the first 30 kids to visit the YVR Community Tent will receive a special prize pack.

The 22nd annual FOD Walk will take place on Friday, May 9, 2014, at 4:30am.

Ever wonder what it feels like to walk on an active airfield?

Find out as part of the 22nd annual FOD Walk on May 9.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers from across the YVR community participate in the annual walk—which begins before sunrise at approximately 4:30am—to help collect Foreign Object Debris (FOD) from YVR’s aprons.

FOD is a substance, debris or article that has the potential to cause damage to an aircraft.

Examples include aircraft parts, rocks, broken pavement, zippers, luggage tags and screws.

FOD poses safety risks to

aircraft due to the potential for damage, should a piece of debris get sucked into an engine or otherwise damage an aircraft.

YVR has an ongoing program targeting FOD. In addition to regular visual inspections, YVR utilizes a high-tech radar system to help detect and pinpoint objects on its runways, taxiways and aprons—day or night.

Volunteers attending the FOD Walk will learn about the important of maintaining a clean and efficient airport, enjoy a free breakfast buffet and be entered to win prizes.

The service complements existing daily service to Narita International Airport (NRT), which is located approximately 60 kilometres from Tokyo’s downtown core. Originally the main international airport for Tokyo until NRT opened in 1978, HND is located just 15 kilometres from Tokyo’s core. It is the second busiest airport in Asia and the fourth busiest in the world.

Canada’s $20 bill nicknamed for a good cause

Canada signs historic Free Trade Agreement with Republic of Korea

Canada’s $20 polymer bank note features the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, a tribute to Canadian men and women’s contributions in military conflicts throughout Canada’s history.

Since the introduction of the new $20 polymer bank note, Canadians have been reminded of Vimy Ridge and what it represents for Canada.

The bank note was introduced in November 2012 and the back features the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. Located on the site of the 1917 Battle of Vimy Ridge, the memorial was erected in honour of Canadian service during the First World War. It is featured on the note as a tribute to Canadian men and women’s contributions and sacrifices in military conflicts throughout Canada’s history.

One organization has come up with a nickname for the polymer $20 note. “Give a VIMY for Vimy” is a fundraising activity organized by the

Vimy Foundation. The goal is to raise $5-million to build a state-of-the-art education centre on the memorial site in France.

The Foundation aims to unveil the new centre in 2017, to commemorate the centennial of the victory at Vimy.

Vimy Day is celebrated each year on April 9 and provides Canadians an opportunity to recall those days in April 1917 when all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together in France to successfully capture the Ridge—a moment in Canadian history often described as Canada’s coming of age.

Located at the highest point of Vimy Ridge, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial bears the names of the 11,285 fallen Canadian First World War ser-

vicemen with no known resting place in France. The memorial was erected on land that was granted permanently to Canada

by France in 1922, in recognition of Canada’s war efforts.

Designed by Canadian sculptor Walter Seymour Allward, the limestone monument features two pylons that stand 30 metres high.

With a maple leaf carved in one and a fleur-de-lis in the other, the pylons represent the sacrifices of people from Canada and France.

In designing the Polymer series, the Bank of Canada consulted the Vimy Foundation to ensure an appropriate depiction of the monument. The Foundation’s mission is to preserve and promote Canada’s First World War legacy as symbolized with the victory at Vimy.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, joined by James Moore, Minister of Industry, and Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, meets with Park Geun-hye, President of the Republic of Korea, during his visit to the Republic of Korea last month.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has signed a bilateral free trade agreement with the Republic of Korea that will significantly boost trade and investment ties between the two countries, creating jobs and opportunities for Canadians in every region of the country.

The Free Trade Agreement, Canada’s first with an Asian market, will create thousands of new jobs in Canada and provide Canadian businesses and workers with a gateway to Asia, enhancing their global competitiveness.

It will also level the playing field for Canadian companies competing with Korea’s other trading partners, including the United States and the European

Union, who already have free trade agreements with Korea.

Canadian consumers will benefit from a greater variety of goods at lower prices, as the Free Trade Agreement will cover virtually all aspects of CanadianKorean trade—goods goods services, investment, government procurement, environment and labour cooperation, and other areas of economic activity.

The Agreement eliminates tariffs and reduces non-tariff measures that hinder market access for Canadian exporters and investors in Korea. Once it is fully implemented, Korea will remove duties on 98.2 per cent of its tariff lines, covering virtually all of Canada’s imports.

The Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement will benefit a wide range of sectors, including industrial goods (e.g. chemicals and plastics, information and communications technology, aerospace, metals and minerals, etc.), agricultural and agri-food products, wine and spirits, fish and seafood, and wood and forestry products.

The Agreement will also benefit Canada’s services sector and strengthen opportunities and protection for two-way investment between Canada and Korea.

Lights in YVR’s Graham Clarke Atrium, along with those in the Domestic and International terminal buildings, were turned off or dimmed on March 29 to mark Earth Hour 2014.

On March 29, millions of people around the world flipped off their light switches from 8:30pm to 9:30pm in celebration of Earth Hour.

YVR proudly participated in the worldwide event for the very first time by turning off or dimming lights within the terminal buildings.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund

for Nature (WWF), which encourages people to turn off lights to raise awareness of power consumption and the need to take action on climate change.

According to B.C. Hydro, British Columbians reduced the provincial electricity load by one per cent during Earth Hour 2014—the equivalent of turning off about 1.4-million lights.

For YVR, Earth Hour and

sustainability means operating the airport in a way that improves the quality of life for everyone.

One of the key examples of the Airport Authority’s commitment to sustainability is its use of solar-powered hot water heating to heat more than 3,000-litres of hot water each hour.

YVR sells largest order of APC kiosks to world’s busiest airport

Richard Bartrem, WestJet’s vice-president, communications and community relations, provides details on how to convert the airline’s flight times to metric.

Each year, a number of organizations around the world perform hoaxes and gags on April Fool’s Day. Calgary-based airline WestJet is known for its practical jokes executed on April 1. These have included press releases about animals being allowed to roam freely onboard its aircraft, a child-free cabin with children stowed in the cargo area, and the use of helium in its aircraft’s ventilation system to lighten the weight and save money on jet fuel.

WestJet’s hoax this year involved taking over the Youtube Canada homepage and releasing a video that announced the airline was changing the way it displayed its flight schedules. Instead of using the current system of “a.m.” and “p.m.,” the airline announced it would be switching to metric time or “milliminutes”. A somewhat complex calculation was provided to explain how to perform the conversion and the airline hinted that a smartphone app would soon be available to perform the conversion.

Viewers who did not own a

metric watch were invited to visit westjet.com/metrictime for more information and further details on how to convert posted flight times to metric.

Not to be outdone, Virgin Airlines CEO Sir Richard Branson, who is also known for his April Fool’s pranks, announced on Youtube that Virgin America would allow its passengers to have more control of their flying comfort. This would be achieved through a Total Temperature Control system built into the airline’s inflight entertainment systems.

Some of the climate control settings available for a passenger’s personalized climate-controlled environment included “Cancun Afternoon” and “Chicago Polar Vortex.”

Boston Pizza used April 1 to introduce “reverse” delivery, bringing customers to their pizza instead of pizza being delivered to them. To obtain reverse delivery, customers simply had to dial their local store’s phone number backwards.

To carry out the new delivery concept, Boston Pizza announced it was seeking job applicants who had a “relatively clean car” that could seat up to four passengers.

Vancouver Airport Authority recently announced the sale of 74 Automated Passport Control (APC) BorderXpress kiosks to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the world’s busiest airport. This innovative kiosk technology will greatly expedite the customs entry process for eligible passengers at ATL. BorderXpress APC kiosks typically reduce the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspection process by 89 per cent, while cutting passenger wait times in half and lowering airport operating costs.

Additionally, as the only turnkey, fully hosted solution available, BorderXpress kiosks can be easily installed and maintained.

“We’re proud to partner with the world’s busiest airport to improve the passenger experience—on a grand scale,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “With international

travel on the rise, ATL will use BorderXpress kiosks to move passengers more quickly to meet their increasing demands.”

Instead of filling out a declaration card and waiting to take their travel documents to a CBP officer, passengers who are eligible and choose to use APC can proceed directly to a self-service kiosk in the U.S. CBP inspection facility. Passengers follow the on-screen instructions to scan their U.S. or Canadian passport, answer the customs declaration questions using the touch screen, receive a receipt confirming their information and then proceed to the CBP officer to finalize processing.

This service is available without pre-registration or passenger fees.

ATL is the latest airport to sign on for BorderXpress kiosks, which are currently in use at international airports across North America, including YVR, Montreal (YUL), Chicago

(ORD), Chicago (MDW), Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) and Terminals 1 and 4 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

Most of the YVR community is no doubt aware that there is a new Chaplain, Dennis Kirkley, at the Airport Chapel following the retirement of long-time Chaplain Layne Daggett in October 2013.

Chaplain Dennis is in a learning process to get acquainted with the community and in his own words “is enjoying the work immensely.” He greatly appreciates the connection to the Airport Authority and is beginning to meet airport and airline employees, as well as many of the passengers who visit the Airport Chapel.

Chaplain Dennis has also been sponsoring fun contests, which encourage interaction with visitors to the Chapel, as well as airport employees and Greencoats who circulate throughout the terminals.

Last month’s contest quiz consisted of five questions about Saint Patrick, whose life is celebrated each year on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. Contestants were asked to provide the correct answers to several questions about his life.

The Chaplaincy is planning more interactive activities for Easter (April 20), Mother’s Day (May 11) and Father’s Day (June 15). Be on the lookout for contest information, or visit the Chapel, located on the International Arrivals Level, to participate.

In addition to instigating these interactive events, Chaplain Dennis has been focusing on building the Chapel Team of six associate chaplains and the dozens of volunteers who meet and greet visitors each week in the Reception Area.

The Chapel has recently received additional furniture and, with the kind support of the Airport Authority, plans are for some small upgrades to enhance service to the many passengers and employees who come for assistance and spiritual care.

New signage and a new brochure and website are also in the works.

The importance of vaccinations There are many common misconceptions that still exist about vaccines. These include claims that vaccines are not safe, cause serious side effects and long-term diseases, contain poisons, pose greater risks than the diseases they can prevent, or that they can be replaced by natural medicines that can provide safer protection.

Scientific research shows that these statements are not true.

The safety and effectiveness of vaccines is strictly regulated and enforced in Canada and around the world and there is no conclusive scientific evidence that vaccines cause long-term diseases. In fact, studies have shown that vaccines do not cause inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, brain damage, asthma, autism, or sudden infant death syndrome.

There have been concerns in the past about a potential link between thimerosal, a mercurycontaining preservative found in some vaccines, and autism or nervous system damage. However, studies have shown that thimerosal in vaccines is not linked to

these problems. As well, routine vaccines for children are available without thimerosal in both Canada and the U.S. While routine vaccines have a very low risk of serious side effects, if you have questions about vaccines or your child’s health, talk to your child’s doctor or public health nurse.

While it is extremely rare to have a serious side effect caused through vaccination, the following facts should be kept in mind: • If the child has an allergic reaction (such as breathing problems or severe swelling of the skin or mouth) to a vaccine, get immediate medical attention and talk to a doctor before the child receives another vaccination.

• If the child is allergic to any of the ingredients of a vaccine (for example, some vaccines contain trace amounts of neomycin or egg protein), consult a doctor about whether they should be vaccinated.

• With any vaccine, there may be some redness, swelling, or pain in the area where the needle penetrated the skin.

• Some children may have a fever after they are vaccinated. If the fever or the vaccine is causing the child discomfort, ask the doctor what medication should be used to reduce the fever or pain.

• If the child is very sick when it’s time to vaccinate, talk to a

doctor before proceeding.

Retired Air Canada pilot lauded for volunteer medical care flights Last month, Hope Air, the Canadian charity that arranges free flights for low-income Canadians who need non-emergency healthcare not available in their local communities, held its annual celebration of volunteers and announced the winners of its 2013 Spirit of Hope Volunteer Awards.

Henry Ilg, from Richmond, B.C. was awarded Hope Air’s 2013 Distinguished Volunteer Pilot Award.

Ilg, who retired from what he called a “long and rewarding career” as an Air Canada pilot in 2012, has been volunteering for Hope Air for the last 10 years. He also volunteers in aircraft search and rescue missions, as well as the COPA for Kids organization that provides free flights and

Almost half of Hope Air Clients are children, and since its start in 1986, the charity has provided more than 80,000 flights for Canadians coast-to-coast.

In its 2013 Annual Report, the charity reported a 16 per cent increase in free flights—from 6,091 in 2012 to 7,090 in 2013— provided for healthcare travel.

“We were able to achieve record growth in 2013, largely because of the loyal commitment and support of our airline partners, donors and incredible volunteers,” said Doug KellerHobson, Hope Air executive director.

The new street banners are currently on display at Richmond City Hall. They will be installed on select, street lighting fixtures in the City Centre area this month, as well as gateway roadways into the city. The banners will fly over the streets for one year.

When Jack Schofield hung up his headphones as a coastal seaplane pilot, he put on the green eyeshade of writer, editor and publisher and penned his own recollections of his flying adventures on the West Coast.

Canada’s tourism taxes, visa policies and cuts to key national marketing budgets are inhibiting its Travel and Tourism growth.

That was the message from David Scowsill, president and CEO of The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), as the organization unveiled its Annual Economic Impact 2014 Canada Report last month.

WTTC’s report shows that Canada increased its contribution to the economy from Travel and Tourism by 2.6 per cent in 2013 and is predicted to grow it by a further 3.9 per cent in 2014.

However, Travel and Tourism only provides 4.5 per cent of GDP to the Canadian economy, compared with the global Travel and Tourism industry, which contributes 9.5 per cent to the world economy.

Scowsill believes that Canada has the potential to do a lot better economically from Travel and Tourism.

“Canada’s natural beauty and friendly people make it a wonderful place to visit, but the Canadian Government is not taking the economic potential of the sector seriously enough,” said Scowsill. “The budget for marketing Canada has been slashed repeatedly and, to no great surprise, the number of visitors to Canada has plummeted. The number of people around the world who are entering the middle classes and having money to

travel is growing every day. As a result, new potential travellers, especially from Asia and Latin America, could be encouraged to visit the country. The Canadian Government can take steps to capture them, which will have a minimal impact on government revenues, yet have a dramatic impact on increasing visitor numbers, tourist receipts and jobs,” said Scowsill.

In February 2014, Canada upgraded its single-entry visa to multiple-entry for visitors from China so that they no longer need to make repeated applications and fee payments. The Canadian Government has also announced plans to introduce e-visas in April 2015.

“Travel & Tourism forecasts over the next 10 years look extremely favourable, with predicted growth rates of more than four per cent annually that continue to be higher than growth rates in other industries,” said Scowsill. “At the national level, governments can also do much to implement more open visa regimes and to employ intelligent rather than punitive taxation policies. If the right steps are taken, Travel and Tourism can be a true force for good.”

New Goodyear blimp’s first flight The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s newest blimp took to the skies on Monday March 17, 2014, for its maiden flight. Aided by a tail wind, the blimp’s speed on its maiden flight eclipsed 128 kilometres per hour.

The test flight was part of a comprehensive training program Goodyear pilots and crew will undergo over the next two months.

Four Canada geese welcome The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s newest blimp to the air during its first flight on March 17, 2014.

It is the first of a new generation of Goodyear blimps that will be different in construction, appearance, and operation than the current fleet of blimps. The new helium-filled airship is 74 metres long, more than 15 metres longer than the previous blimps and just 16 metres shorter than an American football field.

The blimp features a new paint scheme that retains Goodyear’s logo and traditional blue-and-yellow branding on a silver envelope.

A new interior with seating for up to 12 passengers and improved viewing through larger wrap-around windows, which provide sweeping panoramic views, adds to the ride’s comfort.

Innovation in flight The Goodyear airship incorporates the latest in on-board avionics and flight control systems.

Whereas pilots of the previous generation of blimps controlled the airships’ movements with a manual flight system in use since 1925, the new ship features custom computer-controlled avionics.

Electronic controls work in conjunction with an on-board computer to regulate engine thrust, up-and-down movement, and right-and-left movement. Tail fin operation will be controlled by a joystick device. These advancements result in more precise operation of the airship while in flight, on landing, and on take off.

The new airship has a top speed of 117 kilometres miles per hour, compared to the current maximum of approximately 80 kilometres per hour, giving the blimp greater range to cover more events.

Future Travel Experience Permanent bag tag and tracking device to be trialled by Air France-KLM Air France-KLM recently revealed the latest innovation in permanent bag tags. The eTag and the eTrack tracking device have been developed by the airline alongside FastTrack Company, Samsonite and KPN, with significant input also coming from Delta Air Lines.

The eTrack baggage tag makes use of GSM, GPS and Bluetooth technology, which enables it to be tracked by a smartphone, while eTag also utilizes Bluetooth. Passengers with a Flying Blue account can link the eTag and eTrack devices to their account, so when they check-in online, the permanent bag tag will be automatically updated within just five seconds.

process,” said Manuel van Lijf, manager product innovation, Air France-KLM. In addition, a limited edition suitcase—the Samsonite Track and Trace, which includes embed-

ded eTag and eTrack devices— will also be available.

“We thought it would be useless to just develop something for us, we wanted to develop something that will benefit the industry and the passengers,” said van Lijf. “The idea was to create a product that can be used by a passenger flying with Air France, KLM, Delta, Lufthansa or another airline, for instance. Why would a passenger buy a permanent tag that can only be used on one airline?”

Final tweaks are still being made to eTag, eTrack and the Samsonite suitcase, but Air France-KLM is planning to start live trials before the end of the year.

The plan is for a small, select

group of travellers to start trialling the products in December, before they are gradually made available on a larger scale.

In terms of an initial rollout, it is likely that the tag will be offered to high value, frequent travellers, but in the longer term the bulk of eTag and eTrack devices will probably be used by customers who have actively purchased them.

Van Lijf will deliver a presentation entitled ‘Experiences and lessons learned from launching home-printed and permanent bag tags’ as part of the Baggage Advancements Workshop at Future Travel Experience Global 2014, which will take place in Las Vegas from September 24-26, 2014.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Fueling Supervisor is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the fueling operation on his/her shift, while ensuring that customer standards and contractual services are met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Directly supervises all employees on the Ramp on a daily basis.

• Guides and directs employees in the effective execution of duties, assists in problem solving and ensures that all Company health and safety policies are enforced.

• Assists the Manager of Operations - Fueling in developing workforce schedules as it relates to cost and productivity of the Fueling Operations.

• Assists with safety and technical training, as well as maintenance of training records as required.

• Runs Accident/Injury investigation and Incident Command on scene.

• Performs all daily operational paperwork: daily shift reports, delays reporting, employee performance documentation, WCB forms, and overtime control.

• Executes fueling related functions, as required.

• Performs all related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS • Must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent and/or equivalent experience related to field.

• Must have supervisory experience (in a unionized environment, an asset).

• Knowledge of into-plane fueling and GSE fueling, as well as familiarity with equipment such as hydrants and tanker refuelers; an asset.

• Must possess a minimum Class 5BC Provincial Driver Licence, Class 1 is preferred.

• Available and flexible to work 24/7 on various shifts (day, evening, weekends and holidays).

• Meet Transport Canada requirements stipulated in the ‘Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program’.

• Must possess the ability to react quickly and make decisions which do not negatively impact operations and service levels.

• Strong leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills and well organized.

• Ability to multi task and work well under pressure.

This position is located at the Vancouver International Airport. It is a unionized position, full-time and the hourly rate is $21.00.
