Vancouver Airport Authority recently welcomed Air Canada rouge operations to YVR, as the airline began a daily, non-stop flight from Vancouver to Las Vegas, Nevada on April 28, 2014.

This route is one of five announced routes that Air Canada rouge will launch from YVR. “Just in time for our busy summer travel season, we are delighted to welcome Air Canada rouge operations to YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“With Air Canada rouge now touching down in Vancouver, travellers will have more selection to our popular US destinations—including the addition of its service to Phoenix.”

As one of its largest carriers, Air Canada flights comprise 40 per cent of YVR’s operations across international, transborder and domestic sectors.

YVR recently hosted a Cherry Blossom Community Day—part of the annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (VCBF)—at Larry Berg Flight Path Park. The inaugural event to celebrate spring and cherry blossoms was attended by nearly 250 people.

YVR Flight Crew, handed out plane spotting guides, bubble bottles and more than 600 lollipops in celebration of the Cherry Blossom Community Day. The community day featured guest speakers, tours and prizes. Participants were invited to submit their photos for a chance to win a YVR Prize Bike.

Last month, YVR began a celebration campaign to thank its employees, customers, airlines and business partners for being named #1 Airport in North America for the fifth consecutive year by Skytrax World Airport Awards.

Lulu Island has a sweetness all its own The first airport for Vancouver was on Richmond’s Lulu Island.

Not much more than a grass field and some small service buildings near what is now Alexandra Road and Garden City Way, the airport remained there until the move to Richmond’s Sea Island in 1931.

Lulu Island, which makes up most of the City of Richmond, was named in 1862 by Colonel Richard Moody, after Lulu Sweet, a popular showgirl of the era.

Sweet, who hailed from San Francisco, California, was revered for her dancing, singing and acting by newspapers of the day.

During a brief performance

stay at a theatre in B.C.’s New Westminster district, Sweet became a favourite of audiences. One of her most ardent admirers was Colonel Moody, a Royal Engineer.

Colonel Moody accompanied the actress on her departure voyage from New Westminster to Victoria.

As the two stood on deck, gazing at passing landmarks, Sweet inquired as to the name of one large island.

After replying absent-mindedly that the island, as yet, had no name, Moody suddenly exclaimed “By Jove! I’ll name it after you!”

This flash of inspiration resulted in the name Lulu Island, which it has been called since 1863.

Beginning fall 2014, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) will adopt the same international baggage rules as the U.S. in order to create “a seamless and transparent baggage regime for passengers and a harmonized and practical regime for industry.”

For several decades, baggage allowances on airlines were either assessed on a piece or weight basis. In recent years as the application of baggage rules changed, airlines began to apply its own rules for the portion of its own flight segments when multiple air carriers were involved.

This resulted in uneven practices internationally and created confusion for passengers—a problem the new regulations are intended to fix.

As of October 1, 2014, international itineraries purchased on a single ticket involving multiple air carriers to and from Canada, airlines should: 1. apply a single set of baggage rules to the entire itinerary; and 2. disclose the applicable rules on the itinerary receipt or e-ticket.

Following extensive consultations with air travellers, carriers and ticket sellers, the CTA determined that a consistent approach to these issues was necessary.

This new approach provides clarity and predictability across the board for interline and code-share itineraries to and from Canada.

Community volunteer honoured at BC Community Achievement Awards

Last month, Richmond resident and long-time airport community executive Wayne Duzita was one of 32 British Columbians honoured at the 11th annual British Columbia Community Achievement Awards ceremony held at Government House in Victoria.

Duzita volunteers in his Richmond community, his business community and for organizations that support youth and children facing challenges.

His contributions to British

Columbia have benefitted Trinity Western University Advisory Council, Richmond Christmas Fund, Tourism Richmond, Richmond Olympic Oval Corporation, YVR for Kids, Canuck Place Foundation and Canuck Place Hospice.

Air Canada first Canadian airline to offer Wi-Fi on board aircraft Starting this month, Air Canada will begin rolling out Wi-Fi connectivity across its North American fleet—the first Canadian carrier to offer this inflight service to customers.

Air Canada presently has two Wi-Fi-equipped Airbus 319 aircraft operating in Canada and the U.S. and, subject to a final agreement with Gogo inflight internet provider, plans to begin outfitting its remaining Airbus A319, A320 and A321 and Embraer 190 fleet types, as well as its Air Canada Express CRJ-705 and Embraer 175 aircraft, with air-to-ground Wi-Fi connectivity.

The installation goal is to equip 29 aircraft in 2014, with a targeted completion date of December 2015 for the designated 130 narrow-body aircraft.

The system offers peak connection speeds comparable to mobile broadband services available on the ground. Pricing will be competitive with other in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity offerings.

Gogo is also providing Air Canada with the opportunity to type-trial two satellite-based systems using Gogo 2KU and Inmarsat GlobalXpress KA-band solutions. These tests are expected to be conducted in 2015.

The results will help determine future connectivity options that can be considered as the technology continues to evolve.

All Nippon and Air Canada expand codeshare operation

All Nippon Airlines (ANA) and Air Canada have expanded codeshare operations.

ANA’s NH code appears on selected Air Canada domestic and U.S. service via Vancouver, while Air Canada’s AC code appears on selected ANA service via Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Red means ‘Go’ as Virgin Atlantic adds fifth weekly seasonal service at YVR This summer season, Virgin Atlantic Airways is returning to YVR with a fifth weekly service connecting Vancouver to London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

Beginning May 13, 2014, Virgin Atlantic’s expanded service will provide passengers more options and more jobs for British Columbians.

“The North American market

Boeing reveals future commercial spacecraft interior

Boeing and partner Bigelow Aerospace have created the future commercial interior of the capsule currently being developing for NASA. Boeing photo illustration.

Boeing has unveiled a new commercial interior of its Crew Space Transportation (CST-100) next-generation manned space capsule, showing how people other than NASA astronauts may one day travel to space.

CST-100, developed as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Integrated Capability initiative, is designed to transport up to seven crew members or a mix of crew and cargo to low-Earth-orbit destinations such as the International Space Station and a planned Boeing engineers from across the

company leveraged decades of experience in commercial and government aerospace to design the capsule’s interior.

“We are moving into a truly commercial space market and we have to consider our potential customers—beyond NASA—and what they need in a future commercial spacecraft interior,” said Chris Ferguson, former Space Shuttle Atlantis commander and current Boeing director of Crew and Mission Operations for the Commercial Crew Program.

Government Commemorative stamp marks anniversary of Komagata Maru incident One hundred years ago, on May 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru, a Japanese steamship, arrived in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet with 376 passengers, all British subjects, mostly Sikhs from Punjab, India. Under the era’s exclusionary immigration policies, the passengers were denied entry, and the ship was forced to return to India.

In connection with Asian Heritage Month, Canada Post has issued a new stamp marking the centennial of this event, while also recognizing the strides Canada has made toward creating a more tolerant and diverse society.

The stamp, available in all post offices and online, features an artistic rendition of images from a small collection of archive photos, shot on board and during the voyage.

The Komagata Maru’s arrival challenged a 1908 regulation that denied entry to immigrants unless they had $200 and had made a “continuous journey” from their home country—conditions that were nearly impossible for immigrants from India to meet. Under the policy, only 20 returning residents and the ship’s doctor and his family were allowed to enter. The remaining passengers were confined to the ship for two months, after which the ship was forced to sail back to India. Upon arriving in India, many on board were viewed as political agitators. Twenty passengers were shot after disembarking while many others were imprisoned.

The restrictive immigration policies that the passengers challenged were not repealed for 33 years.

Fad vs. Fat: Popular diets You have read about them, you have seen the testimonials and you probably have friends who have lost several pounds on them. All those people can’t be wrong, can they?

So why shouldn’t you go on one of the latest popular diet plans? What have you got to lose? The answer is, more than just weight, perhaps.

Fat vs. fiction: What diets work?

Lose 15 pounds by the weekend? Get your dream body while eating whatever you want and without having to go to the gym?

Shelves full of books and hours

of infomercials will try to have you believe otherwise, but there is no magic formula that can get you the body you want.

Losing weight can be a daunting task, which explains the appeal of programs that promise to make weight-loss easy. All too often, fad diets result not only in regaining lost pounds, but in putting on extra weight as well.

Safe, effective and, most importantly, long-term weight loss requires two important things: permanent changes in eating habits; and regular exercise.

Both of which many quick-fixes fail to incorporate.

Tips for recognizing fad diets or weight-loss gimmicks Promises of unrealistic results. Safe weight loss means losing no more than one kilogram per week. If you lose weight any faster than that, your body could compensate by slowing down the rate at which it burns calories, thereby slowing weight loss and even making it easier to gain weight after you return to your normal eating habits.

Requires purchasing special products, supplements or foods.

The foods you need to lose weight sensibly—a balance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains,

lean meats, and lower-fat dairy products—are all available at the grocery store.

Elimination of certain foods or even whole food groups. By cutting out certain foods from your diet, you risk coming up short on all the vitamins and nutrients you need.

Following a strict set plan.

The less a diet plan takes into account your own personal likes and dislikes as well as your lifestyle, the less likely you are to stick to it. Any diet plan should also account for individual nutritional requirements, which can vary depending on age, activity

The winning formula for losing weight There is no magic bullet for losing weight easily, but the winning formula isn’t as complicated as most people may believe.

Strategies for successful weight loss Set a realistic goal. Weight loss is yet another example of slow and steady winning the race. Rather than trying to drop a size by tomorrow, set a goal of no more than one kilogram per week.

Remember that it takes a deficit of approximately 3,500 calories to lose half a kilogram, so to meet this goal, aim to cut 250 to 500 calories a day through a combination of diet and exercise.

Talk to your doctor or a registered dietician. They can help you set a realistic target weight and tailor a plan to your own likes, dislikes and nutritional needs.

They can also provide support, help you find strategies for

dealing with setbacks and obstacles, and monitor your progress and health as you lose weight.

Eat a balanced diet. Follow Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide and make sure to get a balance of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and lower-fat dairy products.

Strive for variety to make sure that you get all the nutrients you need and you don’t get bored with your diet.

Work in a workout.

Regular aerobic exercise burns calories, making it easier to meet your weightloss goal. Strength training can also help you lose weight by increasing your muscle mass—muscle tissue burns more calories than fat, even when you’re at rest.

If you don’t always have enough time for a full workout, you can burn calories by taking the stairs and choosing a parking

spot further away from the shopping mall doors.

Take everything in moderation. If you cut the foods you love out of your diet altogether, you’re only setting yourself up for an eventual binge. So enjoy a

treat once in a while, but keep the serving size small.

Don’t give up if you fall off the wagon. Get back with your program as soon as possible and remember that eating well is a lifestyle and not just a fad.

First Airbus A320neo begins final assemby

The final assembly process of the First A320neo has begun— starting with the join-up of its forward and aft fuselage sections, which were produced at Airbus’ St. Nazaire site in France and Hamburg, Germany facility, respectively, then delivered to Toulouse, France.

This was followed by the mating of major aircraft structures produced at Airbus sites across Europe, including the wings (Broughton, UK); verti-

cal tailplane (Stade, Germany); horizontal tailplane (Getafe, Spain); engine pylons (St. Eloi, France); and outer and inner flaps (Bremen, Germany).

During recent activity, the main flight-test instrumentation equipment also was installed.

In parallel, the first A320neo jetliner’s PW1100G-JM engines are being prepared at Pratt & Whitney’s manufacturing facilities in the U.S., and will then be delivered to Airbus.

Air Canada has become the first international carrier to join the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck programme for expedited security screening.

Travellers flying with Air Canada are now able to register for PreCheck, which allows them to complete the airport security process without having to remove their shoes, jackets and belts and without removing their laptop from its case.

The Emil Bach House (1915), Frank Lloyd Wright—Bach House was named a City of Chicago Landmark in 1977.

A visit to Chicago should include a visit to Emil Bach House, one of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s more intimate homes on the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust’s tour.

Meticulously restored to its original 1915 appearance by Harboe Architects, the Emil Bach House is now open for public tours.

Built for Emil Bach, president of Chicago’s Bach Brick Co, the house was executed between Wright’s return from Europe in 1911 and his departure to Japan in 1916 to oversee construction of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

For years the Korbel Garden has utilized a range of sustainable cultivation techniques—includ-

ing compost made from vineyard waste, low-flow drip irrigation (run only at night) and integrated pest management with beneficial bugs and nematodes—not unlike those used in Korbel Champagne Cellars’ estate vineyards.

The California drought has caused Korbel to intensify its sustainability efforts to further conserve water. In the Korbel Garden, the changes include replacing some annuals with perennials, adding more compost to some beds, increasing plantings of drought-resistant California natives and limiting “colour” plantings—all techniques applicable to home gardens.

A visit to the Korbel Garden

is an awe-inspiring experience. Winding footpaths lead to vibrant plantings of agapanthus, pincushion plants, irises, dahlias and roses—old worlds, hybrid teas and damasks—all framed by box hedges, clematis, plume poppies and a nine-metre-tall climbing hydrangea. Many travellers make the Korbel Garden the centerpiece of a visit to Korbel Champagne Cellars.

One aviation buff will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join an intercontinental flight on one of the most famous Second World War bombers— the Avro Lancaster—and it will only cost approximately $40,000.

Hamilton’s Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is auctioning on eBay the opportunity to fly as a crew member on the Avro Lancaster when the aircraft goes to England in August 2014.

The Lancaster will join the only other airworthy Lancaster in the world on the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, a month-long flying tour in the U.K., before returning home to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario in September.

This will be the last time the Lancaster Mk X will make the flight, according to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

The winning bidder for the trip will fly in one of the only two remaining airworthy Lancaster left in the world, travelling from Canada to England over four days.

The winning bidder will be trained as a crew member a few days before the flight, so they can actually participate when aboard.

The plane will be soaring below 10,000 feet because the cabin is not pressurized. The transatlantic trip to England will be done in four- to five-hour hops, with refuelling and rest stops in Goose Bay, N.L.; Narsarsuaq, Greenland; and Keflavik, Iceland.

Hamilton’s Lancaster bomber is a flying monument to the Second World War’s Allied bomber crews. It was bought in 1977 for about $10,000 and a team of volunteers led by Norm Etheridge spent 11 years restoring it to airworthiness.

Breakfast or lunch Southside-style Desh and Sarver Minwalla, recent émigrés from the Toronto area, have just opened The Southside Café, a casual, energetic, sun- and music-filled space on Sea Island that is welcoming and comfortable.

Desh has been in the hospitality industry for a number of years, and Sarver, a bank executive in her previous life, has joined him and jumped in with both feet, albeit in the deep end, by her own admission.

The Southside Café’s kitchen is versatile, offering a menu that is a reflection of great café food with an occasional eclectic twist. For example, meatloaf entirely engulfed in bacon and brushed with a brown sugar and ketchup glaze. Seventh Heaven!!

The signature breakfast sandwich, unofficially called the “nonMc-funmuffin,” is a masterpiece of perfectly poached egg (custard-like, not rubbery), nestled between a toasted English muffin, topped with cheddar and thick-cut sublime Ontario peameal bacon.

“No one around here seems to know about peameal,” said Desh. “I have offered to refund the price of the sandwich to anyone who does not love it. So far I have not had to cough up any refunds.”

Everything is homemade and very good. Desh and Sarver have availed themselves of two young bakers, who provide a dazzling array of baked goods. The banana bread, for example, is stupendous.

Hope for Kids offers help A wise man once told me a story about a boy who saved starfish. Thousands of starfish were scattered on the beach at low tide and unless returned to the ocean, they would eventually dry up and die in the hot sun.

A young boy walking along the shoreline was captivated by the endless array of starfish on the beach. He recognized the problem and spent hours collecting and tossing the starfish back into the water.

After a while, a man sitting underneath the shade noticed the boy. “You should get into the shade before you get a sun burn,” said the man, as he sipped his cola.

“But I’m trying to save the starfish,” replied the boy.

The man looked at the number of starfish on the beach and laughed out loud. “You can’t seriously expect to save them all?” he asked.

The boy looked down at the starfish in his hand that he was about to toss into the water. “I know I can’t save them all, but at least I can save this one.”

The 2004 Christmas tsunami was one of the worst natural disasters in human history.

More than 250,000 people lost their lives, and 2-million people were displaced around the Indian Ocean. In response to the tsunami, the world community donated nearly 14 billion US14-billion dollars, with Canada contributing $343-million. For years to come, many areas affected were unable to function and thrive.

Rubina Wong was on holiday with her boyfriend Michael Lang and his sister on Phi Phi Island Thailand. It was a beautiful tropical day on the beach, and

Rubina was on the beach while Mike readied for a scuba dive.

Unexpectedly, the tsunami came in and swept away the entire island.

The tsunami separated the three, but Mike was able to climb on top of a building. In a disaster that claimed nearly 260,000 lives, Mike stayed and continued to search for Rubina. Two weeks later, while searching through photographs of victims, Michael recognized the butterfly tattoo on Rubina’s back.

Rubina Carmen Wong was my aunt. She was very close to our family and we were devastated by the loss of such an extraordinary person. She loved kids and moved from Richmond to Hong Kong to teach English to elementary schoolchildren.

In 2005, family and friends gathered together and started the Rubina’s Hope for Kids Foundation to honour her values and love for children. The initial goal was to build a daycare for kids in areas heavily

affected by the tsunami.

In 2006, the foundation raised $30,000 and built a daycare for 35-45 children. With the help of a local NGO, the initiative has helped build several more daycares in neighbouring villages.

Today, Hope for Kids is an organization that fundraising for local organizations such as the Richmond Christmas Fund/ Christmas Hampers. In the past, it has helped organizations such as Camp Moomba, Japan

Earthquake Relief and Free the Children, just to name a few.

Every year, the major fundraising event consists of a massive twoday softball tournament at King George Park in Richmond.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the tsunami and to commemorate, Hope for Kids will be going to Thailand to work on a special project to repair and provide upgrades to a communitylearning center for children in Ban Prutiew.

Ban Prutiew is a new community that was built for tsunami survivors that did not want wish to live in their old community.

Back to the story of the starfish. The few starfish that the boy could save would reproduce and multiply into dozens more generations.

Hope for Kids did not have the resources to rebuild Thailand in its entirety, but by focusing on one single aspect was able to help in the rebuilding a part of the society.

This year’s Hope for Kids Softball tournament will be held on July 19 & 20 at King George Park in Richmond.
