Community Volunteers scour YVR’s aprons for debris on annual FOD Walk

More than 200 volunteers participated in the annual FOD Walk to help collect Foreign Object Debris (FOD) from YVR’s aprons on May 9, 2014. Volunteers who attended had the rare opportunity to walk on an active airfield to learn the importance of maintaining a safe and clean airport. Vancouver Airport Authority extends a thank-you to all the volunteers, community partners and sponsors who came out to support the annual walk.

To kick-off Bike to Work Week, a few intrepid YVR employees recently participated in HUB’s Share the Road Challenge on May 21, 2014—a race between cyclists, car drivers and transit-takers to see who has the most enjoyable, affordable and fastest commute to Downtown Vancouver in morning rush hour.

YVR was one of the nine teams who competed in this year’s friendly competition to see which mode of travel is the most enjoyable, affordable and fastest.

Starting at Larry Berg Flight Path Park, YVR’s cyclist crossed the finish line first in Downtown Vancouver, followed by the driver then the transit commuter.

Aside from the obvious health perks, cycling is both good for the environment and a cheaper mode of travel. For example, it costs the average British Columbian $7,400 a year to own and maintain a car.

Eva Air will offer more flights between North America and Taiwan than any other airline.

The Vancouver service has been increased from three to four flights per week.

Since joining the Star Alliance airline network in June 2013, EVA has experienced growing demand for its services among business travellers. There has been a substantial increase in the numbers of business passengers flying the airline from North America to Southeast Asia via its hub in Taipei, Taiwan.

Bookings for the airline’s Royal Laurel Class business cabin, which was launched in June 2012, have also climbed.

The average load on EVA’s North America flights surpassed 80 per cent in 2013 and company officials expect bookings to keep climbing in 2014.

The airline will accommodate this

growth and the added frequency by taking delivery of three Boeing 777-300ERs in the second quarter of 2014 and deploying the new aircraft on long-haul flights between North America and Taiwan.

EVA officials expect the added frequencies to attract even more business travellers and further elevate its North America market share.

YVRAF Youth Art Scholarships are awarded annually to emerging artists of BC First Nations ancestry (under age 27) who wish to develop their artistic potential. Selected by a jury of three senior First Nations artists, the recipients receive a $5,000

scholarship to attend a formal art institution or study with a mentor over the course of one year.

At the end of the year, their art projects are unveiled at the annual YVRAF Scholarship Awards Reception and then are exhibited at YVR. Scholarship recipients also have an opportunity to spend a day touring Vancouver museums, galleries and art studios.

The YVR Art Foundation receives funding from Vancouver Airport Authority and from individual, foundation and corporate donors. It has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships and awards to more than 50 artists.

Air Canada ready to implement expanded use of portable electronic devices Last month, the Government of Canada announced that Canadian airlines would soon be able to let passengers use their personal electronic devices (PEDs) during all phases of flights—a policy that is in line with transport authorities in the United States and Europe.

PEDs include such devices as cellular telephones, electronic document readers, tablet computers and MP3 players.

Immediately following the announcement, Air Canada, Air Canada rouge and its Air Canada Express regional partners announced that measures were being finalized to safely implement the new procedures for its customers.

“Air Canada welcomes [this] announcement expanding the use of PEDs on aircraft because it will enhance the travel experience,” said Craig Landry, vice president of marketing at Air Canada. “Our customers have been telling us they want the option to use their PEDs at all times on board our aircraft, both for working and entertainment.

Moreover, this change will bring our policies in line with those of other jurisdictions for use of PEDs on aircraft, eliminating uncertainty for customers.

“We appreciate Transport Canada’s support of our efforts to implement these new rules safely and quickly. This policy will complement our recent announcement that we have begun rolling out in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity across our North American fleet, the first Canadian carrier to do so. We anticipate 29 aircraft will be offering in-flight connectivity by year-end, with

130 narrow-body aircraft to be equipped to provide connectivity by the end of 2015,” said Landry.

The changes do not permit the use of transmitting functions once the aircraft is in motion prior to take-off—customers aboard aircraft will not be able to make cellular phone calls or otherwise send and receive wireless signals from outside the aircraft.

Current safety restrictions on customers using headphones or earbuds not connected to the aircraft’s in-flight entertainment system will also remain in effect.

EVA Air takes delivery of two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft EVA Air has received its 16th and 17th 777-300ER (Extended Range) airplanes from Boeing.

The Taiwan-based airline is the first airline in the world to operate 777-300ERs with Panasonic’s complete state-ofthe-art eX3 in-flight entertainment system.

“Our new Boeing 777300ERs will allow us to initiate significant changes in the flying experience we offer passengers around the world,” said EVA Air chairman K.W. Chang. “We will continue to modernize our worldclass fleet with new and innovative technologies, ensuring that our passengers receive the most

comfortable and memorable flying experience.”

The Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system on EVA Air’s new flagship 777-300ER features in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity and high-definition video touch screens at every seat.

The airline’s first double airplane delivery also helped mark the airline’s 25-year anniversary.

“EVA Air is a long-standing Boeing customer and we are honoured to commemorate this historic double airplane delivery in celebration of our 25-year partnership,” said Ihssane Mounir, vice president of sales, Northeast

Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “It is hard to imagine reaching this day without the leadership of K.W. Chang and his vision to transform EVA Air into one of the leading global airlines in the world.”

EVA Air will operate 17 777-300ERs in its fleet of 49 total Boeing airplanes. Boeing airplanes account for nearly 60 per cent of EVA Air’s entire fleet.

The airline is featuring its exclusive new Royal Class business cabin on these airplanes and will use them to add more flights on existing routes in North America.

Air Canada’s existing yearround non-stop service from Vancouver to Honolulu and Maui, currently operated by Air Canada, will be converted to daily Air Canada rouge Boeing 767-300ER service, effective November 21 and December 1, 2014, respectively.

“Air Canada rouge is best suited to compete more cost effectively in markets where there is both a high leisure travel demand and low-cost competition,” said Benjamin Smith, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Air Canada. “The expansion of our leisure carrier to Hawaii, in tandem with Air Canada’s mainline fleet renewal, is a key element of our strategy for sustainable, profitable growth at both airlines.”

Air Canada will continue to evaluate future market opportunities as new aircraft are introduced into its mainline fleet and

existing aircraft are released for operation by Air Canada rouge as market demand warrants.

Since the launch of Air Canada rouge in July 2013, Air Canada has deployed its leisure carrier to a growing number of Caribbean, European and select sun destinations in the United States.

Hall of Fame inducts four new members

Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame (CAHF) inducted four new members at its 41st annual induction dinner and ceremonies on May 29, 2014, held this year at Calgary International Airport in WestJet Airlines’ Campus facility.

Guest speaker for the evening was Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, who was recently Commander of the International Space Station, Expedition 35, for six months in earth orbit.

A trailblazing advocate for the role of women in aviation and supremely accomplished pilot, instructor and examiner, Lorna De Blicquy played a significant and highly recognized role in changing the face of aviation in Canada.

Nutritional supplements and antioxidants: hype or necessity?

Nutritional supplements are big business. Every day, ads and news stories are published about supplements that promise to prevent heart disease and cancer, improve memory, and much more.

Nutrition experts agree—the best way to stock up on vitamins and minerals is by eating a balanced diet.

Popping a pill is no substitute for a balanced diet.

If, like millions of Canadians, you decide to take a vitamin and mineral supplement, here are some suggested tips to follow.

Don’t waste money on “natural” vitamins. Your body can’t tell the difference between synthetic (man-made) vitamins and so-called “natural” ones, but synthetics are usually cheaper. The exception to this rule is vitamin E: your body absorbs the natural form better than the synthetic version, although vitamin manufacturers add enough to synthetic vitamin E to make up for the difference (and it’s still cheaper).

Also remember that generic and other reasonably priced brands are just as good as more expensive ones.

Read the label to make sure the expiry date is current. Like foods, supplements should not be used after its expiry dates. Look for a Drug Identification Number (DIN) or Natural Health Product (NHP) number, usually on the front label, which shows that the product was approved by Health Canada.

Don’t assume that more is better. In fact, vitamins A and D, iron, zinc and selenium can be toxic in high doses, while others can have unpleasant or serious side effects. Your safest bet is to look for supplements that provide no more than the recommended daily dose of each nutrient.

Keep supplements away from children. Those pills may look and taste like candy to a child, but they can be deadly. Iron supplements cause more poisoning deaths in children than any other substance.

Tell your doctor about all of the vitamins, minerals and other supplements you’re taking. Some vitamins and minerals can interfere with certain medications.

Antioxidants There’s been a lot of excitement about antioxidants—nutri-

ents that protect the body from damage due to “free radicals,” which are compounds produced by environmental toxins and normal body processes. Free radicals can damage cells throughout the body.

There have been many claims about what antioxidants can do for health, including protection from heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene (vitamin A) and the mineral selenium are well-researched antioxidants.

Early studies show that people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables—foods rich in antioxidants—are less likely to develop such diseases than those who shun these foods.

Next, people already taking antioxidant pills have been compared to others who are not taking such supplements. Again, the antioxidants appear to be protective.

Taking a closer look at these studies, it is likely that people who choose to eat lots of fruits and vegetables or take supple-

ments are more health-conscious than those who do not, which may explain these impressive results. Also, fruits and vegetables offer many more nutrients than the known antioxidants.

The best studies are “clinical trials,” where a large group of people are randomly assigned either antioxidants or a placebo (a dummy tablet). That way, the only difference between the two groups is whether or not they are receiving the antioxidant.

Studies that have investigated antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10 for Parkinson’s disease or traditional antioxidants for the treatment of arthritis have yet to find any evidence to support antioxidants for treating these conditions. However, there is still much more research involved in this area.

Bone-building buddy The human body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, the major building block of bone.

It boosts the body’s ability to absorb calcium by up to 80

per cent. Vitamin D becomes especially important as we age, when calcium is less efficiently absorbed. Together, calcium and vitamin D can prevent osteoporosis, a condition where bones become thin and brittle and break easily.

Vitamin D is often called “the sunshine vitamin,” since our bodies can actually produce it when exposed to sunlight. In the summer, having arms, face and hands out in the sun for just 10-15 minutes a day, three times per week, will make enough vitamin D to meet the body’s requirements.

Unfortunately, the sun may not be the safest or most reliable way to get enough of this vitamin. Using sunscreens to prevent skin cancer blocks the rays needed to produce vitamin D. Dark-skinned people absorb less sunlight than those with light skins, putting them at risk of vitamin D deficiency. Also, many people, especially the elderly, are at risk, as they spend more time indoors. Additionally, the long,

cold and dark Canadian winters mean that the skin’s vitamin D production shuts down from early October until late March every year.

Amount of vitamin D needed Babies, children, and adults under 70 (who do not have osteoporosis) need between 600 IU (international units) and 1,000 IU per day.

Adults over 70 should get at least 800 IU daily. Some doctors recommend up to 2,000 IU per day for certain individuals.

In Canada, a glass of milk (250 ml) is enriched with 100 IU of vitamin D, making it a good source of this nutrient. Small

amounts of vitamin D are found in margarine, eggs, chicken liver, salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, swordfish, and fish liver oil.

It may be hard to get enough vitamin D from food alone, so a supplement may be needed.

Remember that most multivitamins contain 400 IU of vitamin D, which is enough for most people.

Don’t be tempted to take higher doses—too much vitamin D can lead to loss of calcium in the bone, too much calcium in the blood and kidney problems.

Meanwhile, mom was right: eat your fruits and veggies, because they are indeed good for you.

Calin Rovinescu, president and CEO of Air Canada, has been named chairman of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) by the associations Board of Governors for a one-year term.

Rovinescu succeeds Richard H. Anderson, CEO of Delta Air Lines, whose one-year term has expired.

“As we continue to celebrate 100 years of commercial aviation, I am excited at the opportunity of taking on the chairmanship of the IATA Board of Governors,” said Rovinescu. “Air transport delivers enormous benefits to the global economy every day. I look forward to working closely with IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler to encourage and support industry and government policies and practices that will enable aviation to play an even bigger role in the global economy during the second century of commercial flight.”

Rovinescu joined Air Canada in 2000 as executive vice president, corporate development and Strategy. In addition, he held the position of chief restructuring officer during the airline’s 20032004 restructuring.

Made from composite materials, the 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes, which allows airlines to open new, non-stop routes to travellers.

The airplane, the first of Air Canada’s 37 787s on order for delivery through 2019, will be used on Air Canada’s TorontoTel Aviv routes.

The 787 is 20 percent more fuel efficient than similar-sized airplanes it will replace in Air Canada’s fleet.

Philippine Airlines to switch from Boeing to Airbus for Vancouver route, eyes expansion of Canadian flight frequency

With the recent upgrading of Philippines Airlines to Category 1 rating by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, the airline will deploy its fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to the U.S. mainland for non-stop flights.

As such, effective September 1, 2014, Philippine Airlines existing Manila-VancouverToronto route will be switched to the use of Airbus A340-300 aircraft. Currently, the airline uses Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft on the route.

Philippine Airlines is also eyeing to double its flight frequencies to Canada, following the successful conclusion of recent air talks between both countries.

With the Philippine government securing an additional seven flight frequencies per week to Canada, the airline said it will file its manifestation before the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB)

to secure the entitlements.

Once approved by CAB, the entitlements will increase Philippine Airlines total flight frequencies per week to Canada from seven to 14.

At present, PAL flies seven times weekly to Vancouver and three times weekly to Toronto (via Vancouver).

Geneva heads the Club Sandwich Price Index Geneva, Switzerland has retained the top spot as the most expensive city in the world to order a club sandwich, at an average of US$32.60, according to research released by Hotels. com.

A club sandwich, also called a clubhouse sandwich, is a sandwich with toasted bread that is filled with chicken or turkey, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayonnaise. It is often cut into quarters and held together by hors d’oeuvre sticks. It frequently has two layers which are separated by an additional slice of bread.

Now in its third year, the Hotels.com Club Sandwich Index (CSI) reflects not only changes in the actual price of a club sandwich across the globe, but also the effect of currency fluctuations between cities.

The CSI average price is calculated from the real prices paid by guests for a club sandwich in

30 hotels in either the capital or an important tourist city in 28 countries surveyed, across five-, four- and three-star categories.

Gastronomic hub, Paris, France, held on to the number two spot globally with a new average of $29.36, followed by Helsinki, Finland (previously number 11), which knocked Oslo, Sweden out of the top three with a price of $24.35.

For the second year in a row New York came in at number 13, however, the city was the most expensive amongst other U.S. cities surveyed, with an average of $17.99 for a club sandwich.

Club sandwich averages in other major U.S. cities include: San Francisco at $15.44; Washington, DC at $15.18; Los Angeles at $14.88; New Orleans at $13.54; Chicago at $13.38; Houston at $13.17; San Diego at $13; Las Vegas at $12.91; and Dallas at $12.06.

The least expensive U.S. city to order a club sandwich was Orlando, Florida at $10.68.

In Canada, Toronto was listed at number 21, with an average price of $14.05.

India’s capital city New Delhi remained the cheapest destination for a club sandwich, with an average of just $8.78, just below Mexico City pegged at an average price of $9.78.

Sydney, Australia experienced the greatest decrease in its club sandwich price, falling from $20.53 in 2013 to $16.93 in 2014.

One popular theory is that the club sandwich was invented in an exclusive Saratoga Springs, New York, gambling club in the late 19th century. The sandwich is known to have appeared on U.S. restaurant menus as far back as 1899.

Canadian Government offers guide for women travellers While women travel for many of the same reasons as men do, their social concerns, as well as their health and safety needs, are very different. For example, female travellers may be more directly affected by religious and societal beliefs in some countries.

What steps can women wayfarers take to avoid sexual

harassment? How can they make their accommodations more secure? Where can they obtain consular assistance if they experience problems while abroad?

These and many other practical questions are addressed in a booklet published by the Government of Canada entitled Her Own Way: A Woman’s Safe-Travel

Guide.

Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrated at YVR Chapel The YVR Chapel has been sponsoring fun contests, which encourage interaction with visitors to the Chapel, airport employees and Greencoats who circulate throughout the terminals.

Last month, in celebration of Mother’s Day, the YVR community was asked a pertinent question “What do you most appreciate about your mother?”

According to Chaplain Dennis Kirkley, many people responded immediately, but others needed time to ponder. As expected, the answers were varied and inspiring.

Here are the top 10 responses (as chosen by the Chapel’s volunteers): 1. She’s EVERYTHING—the best woman alive!

2. Her dedication and hard work, and her sense of humour.

3. She always listened to me.

4. She’s the best cook on the planet!

5. Guiding me in the right direction.

6. She raised us in love.... she was there for me 24/7!

7. She’s my mother and father, my “muddy”.

8. Her sheer optimism and her humble servant attitude.

9. Her baby-sitting and grand-mothering skills!

10. She gave everything without waiting for anything.

The names of all the participants who answered the question were included in a draw for prizes of body lotion gift packs.

Father’s Day shootout at the Chapel This month, in celebration of Father’s Day, men will have to earn the right to enter the prize draw. For the week of Father’s Day, Monday June 9 to Friday June 13, employees are invited to visit the Chapel to show their basketball skills. Those who achieve three out of five hoops will have

their names entered into this month’s prize draw.

“Go for it guys!” exclaimed Chaplain Dennis Kirkley.

The draw will take place on Friday, June 13 at 5pm.

Governor General attends D-Day Anniversary ceremony The Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada marked the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy by taking part in a ceremony of remembrance on Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

During the ceremony, the Governor General inspected a guard of honour and addressed veterans, dignitaries and members of the public. He also participated in a ribbon-cutting cer-

emony to mark the addition of a Hawker Typhoon aircraft to the museum’s Second World War exhibition.

The Hawker Typhoon is the last remaining original and complete Typhoon in the world and is on loan from the Royal Air Force Museum in London, England.

Delta expands its A320 fleet

Delta has placed an order for 15 Airbus A321ceo (current engine option) aircraft to offset jet retirements.

Delta currently operates a large fleet of Airbus aircraft, including 126 A320 Family aircraft and 32 A330s.

The order brings Delta’s backlog to 45 single-aisle Airbus A321 and 10 widebody

Airbus A330 aircraft.

All of Delta’s A321s will feature fuel-saving Sharklets— lightweight composite wingtip devices that offer four per cent fuel-burn savings. This environmental benefit gives the airline the option of extending its range up to 185 kilometres or increasing payload capacity by some 450 kilograms.

Many of Delta’s A321s will be delivered from Airbus’ brand-new A320 Family assembly line, currently under construction in Mobile, Alabama. Hiring is underway at the facility and aircraft assembly will begin there next year. By 2017, the Mobile facility is expected to produce four aircraft per month.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Fueling Supervisor is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the fueling operation on his/her shift, while ensuring that customer standards and contractual services are met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Directly supervises all employees on the Ramp on a daily basis.

• Guides and directs employees in the effective execution of duties, assists in problem solving and ensures that all Company health and safety policies are enforced.

• Assists the Manager of Operations - Fueling in developing workforce schedules as it relates to cost and productivity of the Fueling Operations.

• Assists with safety and technical training, as well as maintenance of training records as required.

• Runs Accident/Injury investigation and Incident Command on scene.

• Performs all daily operational paperwork: daily shift reports, delays reporting, employee performance documentation, WCB forms, and overtime control.

• Executes fueling related functions, as required.

• Performs all related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS • Must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent and/or equivalent experience related to field.

• Must have supervisory experience (in a unionized environment, an asset).

• Knowledge of into-plane fueling and GSE fueling, as well as familiarity with equipment such as hydrants and tanker refuelers; an asset.

• Must possess a minimum Class 5BC Provincial Driver Licence, Class 1 is preferred.

• Available and flexible to work 24/7 on various shifts (day, evening, weekends and holidays).

• Meet Transport Canada requirements stipulated in the ‘Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program’.

• Must possess the ability to react quickly and make decisions which do not negatively impact operations and service levels.

• Strong leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills and well organized.

• Ability to multi task and work well under pressure.

This position is located at the Vancouver International Airport. It is a unionized position, full-time and the hourly rate is $21.00.
