The first gates of the A-B Connector are now open for airlines and passengers to enjoy at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
The first landmark of any major construction project is always an exciting one and that is why on June 20, 2014, Vancouver Airport Authority announced that the first gates of the A-B Connector are now open for airlines and passengers to enjoy. WestJet christened the new Gate B17 with a flight that arrived from Kelowna just before 8am on opening day, and the new Gate B18 with a departure flight to Prince
George that took off at about 9am. The two new upgraded gates and more space for flight operations are a bonus for WestJet and other airlines operating out of the new terminal area, while spacious hold rooms are a plus for passengers. Many more exciting features are on tap for the new A-B Connector as part of Phases Two and Three. See CONNECTOR page 2

“Not only does Sichuan Airlines increase trade and business opportunities between British Columbia and China, but it offers Canadians an exciting travel destination to the home of the rare and beloved giant panda,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “We’re excited to celebrate all-things-panda with our community and Sichuan Airlines, which two years ago chose YVR as its first and only entry point into North America: a testament to our position as a global gateway.” Coinciding with the Airport Authority’s panda adoption is Sichuan Airlines’ launch of its
Summer Panda Festival 2014, happening at the Richmond Night Market from June 27-October 13, 2014. The festival includes a grand prize contest for the chance to win a family trip to visit Sichuan province and the Chengdu Panda Base. “We’re excited to celebrate two years of successful service between Chengdu and Vancouver, via Shenyang, with a festival and contest that celebrates our nation’s most treasured animal,” said Jian Shi, vice president of Sichuan Airlines. “We hope to see many visitors to our Summer Panda Festival to learn more about the province of Sichuan
and the giant pandas who call it home.” Chengdu has been the ancestral homeland to giant pandas since ancient times. The area, located in the heart of one of the world’s 34 hot spots of biological diversity, is inhabited by 73 species of rare animals and more than 2,000 species of plants. Chengdu deserves to be called “The Home of the Giant Panda,” as just 70 kilometers away from downtown Chengdu sits the heart of giant panda country. At elevations from 350 metres to 5,600 metres above sea level, it is the only place in the world with both wild and captive giant pandas.
YVR Orbis Plane Pull for Sight event raises $28,000 The fifth annual Plane Pull for Sight event in support of Orbis Canada took place last month at the FedEx Express Canada apron at YVR. The event raised $28,000 in support of the Orbis Kids Sight program aimed at eliminating childhood blindness throughout the developing world. The Orbis Plane Pull for Sight is a unique fundraising event that showcases teamwork and strength as teams made up of 25 people compete to pull a 60-tonne 757 FedEx cargo plane 3.65 metres. The event was open for registration to companies, organizations, groups, associations and individual participants age 14 and up. Each team was required to raise a minimum of $1,250 (or $50 per person) to compete in the pull. In total, 12 teams participated in the event with close to 1,000 people in attendance. Prizes were awarded for the Fastest Pull, Top Individual Fundraiser, Top Team Fundraisers, and Most Enthusiastic Team. Orbis’ missions around the world begin and end with the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, a DC-10 aircraft donated to Orbis by FedEx. The plane is equipped
with a teaching facility and ophthalmic surgery center. Volunteer pilots from FedEx fly the plane to remote locations across the globe, where medical teams perform surgeries, conduct training sessions, and educate communities about blindness prevention and treatment. Since the Flying Eye Hospital took flight in 1982, more than 6.8-million people worldwide have been treated; 360,000 surgeries have been completed; and 195,000 eye care professionals have been trained aboard the hospital. FedEx also supports the plane’s maintenance—making it possible for Orbis to operate the current Flying Eye Hospital at nominal expense—and also provides complimentary transportation for critically needed medical supplies headed to Orbis-hospitalbased programs around the world. YVR Orbis Plane Pull for Sight prize winners:
Top Individual Fundraiser: Dave J. Taylor, from team Lululemon DC Top Fundraising Team: Vancouver Lions Legacy Club— raised $13,240 Fastest Pull: YVR Ramp— pulled the Boeing 757 cargo plane in 6.63 seconds Most Enthusiastic Team: UCruising.
Summer runway operations at YVR
In order to complete YVR’s annual runway maintenance requirements and manage the peak summer travel period, Vancouver Airport Authority has made several changes to its summer runway operations. South runway maintenance—July 4 to August 1, 2014 As part of the Airport Authority’s comprehensive, multi-year runway maintenance program, the south runway will be closed nightly from July 4 to August 1, 2014, between 9pm and 7am. The Airport Authority’s goal is to have the work completed as soon as possible. If the project work is completed prior to August 1, 2014, normal operations will resume with the usual nightly closure of the north runway. During this time, the north runway, which is typically closed

between 10pm and 7am, will be used for take-offs and landings (or departures and arrivals). Runway maintenance cannot be completed during the day due to the amount of aircraft activity requiring use of the south runway. Runway maintenance, which includes rubber removal, pavement line marking, edge erosion control, culvert cleaning and catch basin clearing, is necessary to ensure the continued safe operation of aircraft at YVR. The Airport Authority acknowledges that some communities may be disturbed by the changes to runway usage, but these temporary schedule changes are necessary to ensure that YVR meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency. Summer has landed at YVR and with it a busy travel season. It is possible to get from your house to the departure gate with almost no hiccups along the way. Here are some tips for safe and seamless travel: 1. Once you have confirmed your travel dates and times, book parking online for the best available on-airport parking rates. A 24-hour, five-minute shuttle ride conveys travellers to and from the terminals. 2. Check the status of your flight online, either at yvr.ca or your airline’s website, before leaving the house. 3. Arrive at least two hours before an international flight, 90 minutes before a U.S. flight and 60 minutes
for domestic travel. The wait won’t be long once you’re updating your holiday status with YVR’s free WiFi. 4. Print your own boarding pass using automated checkin kiosks and, for those travelling to the U.S., use BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks to speed up border clearances. 5. CATSA screenings can go by much quicker with a few simple things to keep in mind. Packing your laptop in a separate compartment and keeping your one-litre plastic bag containing all liquids, gels and aerosols in the top of your bag will make things easy. You’ll have to take off your shoes, outerwear and
accessories before you reach the screener. 6. Pack a snack for the flight once you’re through. YVR’s restaurants offer a range of affordable and portable options through the YVR Carry on Food program. 7. Forget your toothbrush or earplugs? Stop by YVR’s Pharmasave, located before security on Level 1 of the Domestic Terminal, to pick up last-minute travel essentials. And don’t forget to follow YVR on Twitter (@yvrairport) for the latest information, specials and events happening around the airport while you wait for your flight to depart. Don’t forget to send a tweet of your travel adventures.

Icelandair’s new in-flight safety video demonstrates the importance of safety together with the beauty of Iceland.
Icelandair recently premiered its new in-flight safety video. Unlike most airline safety videos, the result is a film that not only underlines the importance of safety, but also engages passengers with a sense of the beauty of Iceland. The safety video uses Iceland’s landscape as the stunning backdrop to the traditional and important safety message presented to all passengers. For example, emergency
lighting takes on a new, nonthreatening identity when compared to the northern lights, and assuming the brace position becomes a calm and collected maneuver when waking up after a long relaxing slumber by the lulling shores of a lake. Filming for the safety video took place on locations that showcase Iceland’s hot spots of nature and beauty. Icelandair offers service to Iceland from Vancouver and
offers connections through the airline’s hub at Keflavik International Airport to more than 20 destinations in Scandinavia, the U.K. and Continental Europe. Only Icelandair allows passengers to stopover in Iceland for up to seven nights at no additional airfare. For additional information about Icelandair’s fares and packages to Iceland and beyond, visit icelandair.us or call 1-877-I-FLY-ICE.

First Airbus A320neo reaches completion The assembly of Airbus’ first A320neo (new engine option) has been completed, following painting of the aircraft and the mounting of Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines. MSN6101, which will be the first A320neo to fly, will soon start its ground tests to prepare for first flight. The flight test campaign for the A320neo will kick-off in September 2014, paving the way for entry into service in the fourth quarter of 2015. To further prepare for first flight, Airbus will begin a “virtual flight-test campaign” this summer, which includes simulator-based evaluations of flying scenarios and aircraft systems. The A320neo incorporates many innovations, including latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices, which together will deliver 15 per cent in fuel savings and a reduction of 3,600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year. With a total of nearly 2,700 orders received from more than 50 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 per cent of the market.
Following the completion of painting and mounting of its Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines, Airbus rolled out its first A320neo (new engine option) jetliner on July 1, 2014. MSN6101 will be Airbus’ first A320neo (new engine option) jetliner to fly and will conduct ground testing this summer to prepare for its maiden flight, which will kick off the NEO flight-test programme.

By the pharmacists at Pharmasave
(Left to right) David Nimi, pharmacist; Faizah Muniff, technician; and Richard Wilson, pharmacist; are located at Pharmasave in the Domestic Terminal, Level 1.
Staying safe in the great outdoors Summer is the perfect season to spend as much time as possible outside with family and friends. Whether on a staycation or enjoying a holiday abroad, follow these tips on staying safe and dealing with common health issues. Allergies Seasonal allergies are triggered by several different types of pollen. When trees and grasses begin growing in the spring and early summer, they release light, powdery pollen that floats in the wind. If you’re allergic to this pollen, it can result in sniffling, sneezing, wheezing, a runny nose, and itchy and watery eyes. For some people with asthma, pollen can also trigger an asthma attack. In late summer and early fall, weed pollen and fungal spores are the main culprits. In the early spring, tree pollen is the usual cause. In late spring and summer, grass pollen becomes the problem. Specific allergens in the environment will vary with geographical area. How to decrease allergy symptoms during summer If possible, stay inside when pollen counts are high and on windy days when pollen and spores can get blown around. Avoid being outdoors in the early morning hours between 5am and 10am when pollen counts are usually highest. If you’ve been outside all day, take a shower on your return home and launder the clothes you wore. Don’t hang the laundry outside to dry—it can trap pollen and mould. Use your dryer instead. If these measures don’t work for your allergies, talk to your health care provider. There are eye drops, nasal sprays, oral antihistamines and anti-allergy medications, sinus rinses and even allergy shots that can be helpful in treating your specific allergy. Many treatments are available without a prescription, but others will need a prescription from your doctor. If you have asthma and have seasonal allergies, monitor your asthma closely and follow the action plan your doctor gives you. Waterborne diseases When you’re camping, it’s tempting to drink water straight
from pristine-looking lakes and streams—but don’t! Microscopic single-celled parasites can cause illnesses in humans if ingested. Two common waterborne diseases are cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis. The symptoms for cryptosporidiosis include diarrhea, headache, nausea and stomach cramps. It can show up 2 to 25 days after becoming infected and symptoms usually last for one to two weeks. Giardiasis symptoms include diarrhea, gas, stomach cramps, weakness and weight loss. Vomiting, chills and headache may also occur. Symptoms first show up 6 to 16 days after becoming infected and can last for as long as one month. How to prevent waterborne diseases Use bottled water, or boil water at least one minute before use. Alternatively, you can purify water with iodine tablets or special water filters. Don’t brush your teeth, wash dishes, fruits, or vegetables, or use ice cubes made with water that hasn’t been purified. Peel raw fruits and vegetables before you eat them. Wash your hands with bottled or purified water only, and do it carefully several times a day. Don’t swallow water when swimming—even in a chlorinated swimming pool as chlorine does not kill all germs. One easy way to remember how to keep it safe: “Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!” If you think you have cryptosporidiosis or giardiasis, see your doctor right away. Some diseases picked up while travelling can also be a result of the food consumed. Traveller’s diarrhea, usually caused by E. coli bacteria, is one common infection encountered on trips abroad. It is characterized by stomach cramps, nausea and several runny stools. Dehydration is a complica-
tion of traveller’s diarrhea. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about how to prevent dehydration with oral rehydration solutions. In addition to following the suggestions above, also avoid consuming unpasteurized dairy products or under-cooked foods. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to prevent food borne diseases or traveller’s diarrhea, such as the use of oral vaccines. Tick trouble Tick bites can present a temporarily annoying experience in the summertime. However, the additional possibility of catching Lyme disease is one more reason to take action against these bugs. Lyme disease is caused by a spiral-shaped bacterium, which is spread by the bite of deer ticks or black-legged ticks. These ticks crawl from grasses and shrubs in wooded areas onto skin. The tick digs its mouth into the skin and feeds for two or three days before dropping off. A characteristic sign of Lyme disease is a skin rash that starts with a small red patch that gradually expands, often clearing in the centre to form a bull’s-eye pattern. Flu-like symptoms develop, including fatigue, headache, chills, fever, muscle and joint pain and swollen lymph nodes. Less commonly, tingling
or numbness in the hands and feet or facial paralysis has also been reported. Preventing tick bites If possible, stay away from tick-infested areas, especially in May, June, and July. Stay in the middle of hiking trails and try not to brush against grasses or leaves. Wear light-coloured clothes. Wear closed shoes and long pants with the pant legs tucked into your socks or boots. As an extra precaution, put tape around the area where your pants and socks meet. Wear a hat and a long-sleeved shirt for extra protection. Spray your clothes and exposed skin with an insect repellent that contains 30 per cent DEET—also effective at repelling mosquitoes, which can carry malaria or West Nile virus—or treat clothes with the insect repellent permethrin, which kills ticks on contact. If using DEET, do not spray it directly on your face or broken skin. Do not apply DEET on the face or hands of children aged six months to two years. If you spend several days outdoors in areas that might contain ticks, inspect yourself daily once indoors. Check skin carefully and ask someone to check your scalp. Do not panic if you find a tick has
already latched on to you—all ticks do not carry Lyme disease. Removing ticks The best way to remove a tick is with a tick-removing device or a pair of fine-point tweezers. Pull the tick straight out firmly and steadily. Do not twist, squash, or crush the tick when removing. Be patient, as proper tick removal takes time. If you notice that the tick’s mouthparts still remain in your skin, don’t worry; the bacteria that cause Lyme disease reside in the tick’s gut or salivary glands. Once you remove the tick, place it in a container with alcohol to kill and preserve it so you can take it to your doctor to check if it carried Lyme disease. Cleanse the affected area of your skin with an antiseptic (e.g., alcohol) or mild soap and water. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. You should also have the tick bite examined by your doctor, especially if you develop a rash or flu-like
symptoms. Treating Lyme disease For people who require treatment for a mild infection associated with Lyme disease, their doctor will usually prescribe an oral antibiotic for 14 to 21 days. The specific antibiotic used will depend on a person’s medical history and medication allergies. For people who require treatment for more severe infections associated with Lyme disease, their doctor will usually prescribe an intravenous antibiotic for two to four weeks. On occasion, additional treatment with an oral antibiotic may follow. When travelling abroad, especially to developing and tropical countries, it is a good idea to speak with your doctor or pharmacist about disease-protection. Many potential diseases can be prevented with immunizations, so speak to your doctor or visit a travel clinic to see if you are at risk and what immunizations are needed.

Lufthansa signs partnership deal with Air China Lufthansa has signed a partnership deal with Air China as it seeks to improve its position in China, the world’s second largest aviation market. Under the agreement, Air China and Lufthansa will set up a joint venture that will allow each airline to revenue share on certain routes by selling tickets
for each others’ flights. Lufthansa has similar agreements in place with Air Canada and United Airlines on links between North America and Europe and with ANA on routes to Japan. The new partnership arrangement could come into effect for the start of the winter timetable in October 2014.
Canada Jetlines will be modelled after U.S. carriers such as Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines, and Ireland-based Ryanair, all of which offer no-frills flights at very low prices.
Canada Jetlines, a proposed ultra low-cost Vancouver-based airline, recently announced plans to raise $10-million to list on the TSX Venture Exchange. The vision of aviation veterans David Solloway, Jim Scott and Dix Lawson, Jetlines has received Stage 1 approval from the Canadian Transportation Agency to operate a jet airline service and will shortly being the process with Transport Canada to obtain an Airline Operator Certificate. “Jetlines is well on its way
to providing Canadians with an exciting and affordable new air travel alternative,” said Jetlines CEO Jim Scott. “Our proven and dedicated team has been very busy preparing to proudly serve Canada soon [spring 2015].” Jetlines plans to use Airbus A319-100s as its launch aircraft. In an interview with CBC, Jetlines president David Solloway said the airline plans to offer an “à la carte” service, charging for extras such as carry-on baggage, beverages and seat selection, while keeping
base fares almost 50 per cent lower than those currently being charged by other carriers. Jetlines still needs $40-million in order to launch and has hired a global investment firm, Euro Pacific Canada, to help reach its goal. Another proposed ultra-low discount carrier, this one based in Calgary, has announced its intention to enter the affordable airline market. Jet Naked, headed by Tim Morgan the co-founder of WestJet and current Energjet
CEO, claims its airfare will be at least 40 per cent lower than Air Canada and WestJet. According to CH Aviation, Jet Naked has already put together a fleet of three Boeing 737s and has hired Toronto-based investment dealer Octagon Capital to assist in raising $30-million to $50-million in private equity financing. No word of a launch date for Jet Naked as yet.

In the 12 months since WestJet Encore took to the skies, it has added 12 destinations to the original six, which included Vancouver, Fort St. John, Victoria and Nanaimo, British Columbia; Calgary, Alberta; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Condor Airlines completes cabin renovations on long-haul fleet
Condor Airlines’ refurbished long-haul cabins include comfortable seats, improved on-board entertainment with individual screens, and a dynamic lighting concept.
Germany’s third largest commercial airline, Condor, has completed an overhaul of the cabins in its long-haul Boeing 767-300 aircraft. Cabin refurbishments include a new blue-and-grey design selected to provide a brighter look, and the replacement of all economy- and premium economy-class seats. New Business Class ergonomic seats offer fully automated, angled-lie flat seats capable of inclining to an angle of 170
degrees, with a bed length of 1.80 metres. An updated dimmable LED lighting system was brought in for a more “pleasant ambiance,” according to Condor. The lighting can be used to simulate the sunrise or sunset to gently awake passengers for the airline’s breakfast service. In-flight entertainment includes personal screens for all passengers and an audio program with 24 radio channels and several hundred audio CDs, which
is available free of charge to passengers in all classes. Last year, Condor and Canadian carrier WestJet announced an interline partnership agreement, which offers customers connecting flights to and from 17 destinations in Canada, including Vancouver. The agreement expands the network of both airlines, allowing passengers to connect beyond each airline’s own network. For more information, visit condor.com.

Diagon Alley is now open at Universal Studios Florida. Thousands lined up on opening day and reportedly waited for up to eight hours to be among the first to experience the new area and its signature attraction: Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. The feature attraction is a pulse-pounding adventure on a groundbreaking, multi-dimensional 3D thrill ride, which puts participants right in the middle of the action as they navigate their way through the perils of the Gringotts vaults, encountering Harry, Ron and Hermione along the way, and evading the wrath of malicious villains Voldemort and Bellatrix as well as trolls and other creatures who stand in the way of a safe return to Diagon Alley.
Diagon Alley includes shops, food and beverages and expands upon The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, which is located right next door in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. That means that you’ll need admission to both of the Universal Orlando theme parks to experience all of the Harry Potter magic and excitement. A Single Park Admission ticket gives access to either land, but does not include a trip on Hogwarts Express. For more information, visit universalorlando.com.

Travel Advice for 2014 Commonwealth Games The Canadian Government is encouraging travellers who are planning to attend the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which are taking place in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3, 2014, to consult the Government of Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories before they depart. “The host country is solely responsible for the safety of all athletes, teams and visitors,” said the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State Foreign Affairs and Consular. “Our government and its agencies are work-
ing with their counterparts to ensure the safest and most secure environment possible for Canadians for the duration of these exciting events. All Canadians who are planning to attend the Games are encouraged to take every precaution to ensure their safety and security.” Whether attending the games as an athlete or to support Team Canada, travellers should always observe the “3 Rs” of international travel, which can be found at the Government of Canada travel.gc.ca website: Read up on relevant topics
such as safety, security and local laws by consulting the Country Travel Advice and Advisories for the United Kingdom. Register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service, so that government officials can contact and assist you in an emergency. Reach us if you need assistance. The 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony will be held at Celtic Park football stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.

Sales are underway for Parc Riviera’s first collection of lowrise condominium homes located close to YVR, adjacent to the Fraser River at the foot of Richmond’s No. 4 Road. “Prices start in the mid-$200,000s, so Parc Riviera is an incredible value, especially in the Richmond market,” said Dave Bauman, sales and marketing director. “Being able to purchase a brand new condominium home in a brand new master-planned community is exciting enough, but when you consider these homes are right beside the river, it makes this opportunity even better.” With construction well underway, Parc Riviera’s pedestrian-friendly character and riverfront charm is emerging. “All the roads are in, so now you truly get a sense of the overall neighbourhood,” said Bauman. “Many of our early buyers have already moved to Parc Riviera’s sold-out townhome phases and we often see them out walking their dogs or cycling
along the dikes. It makes for a very lively, very friendly ambiance.” The homes at Parc Riviera boast sophisticated and upscale finishings. Quartz countertops, gas cook top, hardwood flooring and luxurious soaker tubs. Geothermal heating and cooling means a home that is ultra-easy on the environment and ultra-comfortable in any weather. The choice of one-, two-, or spacious three-bedroom suites are part of the reason that Parc Riviera appeals to such a diverse range of savvy homeowners—young couples, professionals, and downsizers—who want to call this neighbourhood home. Parc Riviera’s presentation centre at 10111 River Drive, Richmond, and two display homes are open from noon to 5pm weekends or by appointment. Auto Talk Canadians spend average of $26,000 every five years on a new vehicle The majority of Canadians who own a vehicle plan to purchase a new one every five years, spending an average of $26,044, according to an Auto Report poll of 1,004 Canadians conducted on behalf of the Bank of Montreal (BMO). Overall, vehicle expenses account for the third-largest household monthly expense for Canadians. According to the BMO Auto Report, car ownership is high in Canada. More than 83 per cent of those surveyed own a vehicle; for the vast majority, buying is far more popular than leasing, with 82 per cent of those who intend to acquire a new vehicle saying they will buy. The Auto Report also
revealed: • On average, Canadians spend $437.48 per month ($5,250 annually) on vehicle costs, including payments, insurance, gas and maintenance. • Vehicle costs account for 15 per cent of the average household budget, trailing only housing costs (33 per cent) and food expenses (19 per cent). • Percentage of funds set aside for vehicle costs is seven points higher than that allocated to savings and investments (eight per cent); and nine points higher than debt repayment costs (six per cent). • Half of Canadians (49 per cent) paid for their current vehicle with a loan, while 11

per cent paid using a line of credit. Ray O’Kane, managing director and head, national retail dealership finance, BMO Bank of Montreal, cautioned Canadians who plan to purchase a vehicle in the near future to ensure they can afford it. “It’s easy to become overwhelmed when shopping for a new vehicle,” said O’Kane. “One of the most important decisions

A sound strategy is for consumers to maintain a shorter financing amortization period to reduce interest expenses and create more flexibility for future purchasing decisions.”
Alex Koustas, economist, BMO Capital Markets, said the poll results reflect the red-hot pace of sales over the past few months. “Low financing rates, dealer incentives and attractive vehicle offerings have been bringing consumers into showrooms across the country,” said Koustas.
“While there still is some push from cyclical economic factors, it appears there has been a fundamental change in car buying habits, with Canadians comfortable owning more vehicles per household. Sales should come close to matching last year’s record year of $60.8-billion, and remain strong in 2015.”
