Canada Post’s brand new state-of-the-art 65,000-squaremetre Pacific Processing Centre (PPC) Sea Island facility is now open. As part of a nationwide postal transformation effort, which began in 2008, Canada Post relocated its operations from both the

Vancouver Mail Processing Plant at West Georgia Street and the Vancouver Parcel Distribution Centre at No. 6 Road, Richmond, into the new facility. Canada Post invested $200-million in the new multipurpose processing facility and related equipment. The plant,

located on Ferguson Road, processes letters, parcels, packets and advertising mail under one roof. Building a processing facility at the YVR Sea Island location was a strategic decision that was made to improve Canada Post’s access to vital transportation links and open

the way for synergies with the airlines and the cargo community already located there. Vancouver is one of three international access points for Canada Post and plays an increasingly important role in facilitating trade with Asian countries. With its international role, the PPC facility

will house a Canada Border Services Agency operation to better serve western Canadians. The new postal facility was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards to take up as small an ecological footprint as possible.

Vancouver Airport Authority recently announced its BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks helped its 10-millionth traveller clear customs into the United States. The 10-millionth passenger used a BorderXpress kiosk to clear customs at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport. BorderXpress APC kiosks reduce the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspection process by 89 per cent, while cutting passenger wait times in half and lowering airport operating costs. Additionally, as the only turnkey, fully hosted solution available,

BorderXpress kiosks can be easily installed and maintained. Instead of filling out a declaration card and waiting to take their travel documents to a CBP officer, passengers, who are eligible and choose to use APC can proceed directly to a self-service kiosk in the U.S. CBP inspection facility. Passengers follow the on-screen instructions to scan their U.S. or Canadian passport, answer the customs declaration questions using the touch screen, receive a receipt confirming their information and then proceed to the CBP officer to finalize processing. Thermoplastic markings on Taxiway Lima Vancouver Airport Authority has installed new thermoplastic markings to one of its main taxiways (Taxiway Lima), which will replace the paint used in the past. Thermoplastic might sound futuristic and complex, but it’s essentially surface markings that are pre-cut and pre-coloured signs that form a strong bond with the concrete upon application to the taxiway. The benefits of thermoplastic are significant. Thermoplastic markings have a clean and crisp appearance, are more durable, and typically last seven years before needing to be replaced.

New thermoplastic markings are installed at one of the main taxiways on YVR’s South Runway.

See our ad on page 13 * YVR is the international aeronautical designation for Vancouver International Airport.

The alternative is paint, which YVR currently applies to airfields annually during our summer maintenance. Eliminating the need to reapply paint each year will help reduce the amount of work that needs to be done during the annual summer runway maintenance period, and may lessen the length of runway closures due to repainting in the future. If you have any questions about the thermoplastic application or summer runway maintenance, please contact community_relations@yvr.ca or call 604.207.7097.

From north to south, YVR Flight Crew ribs it up in B.C.

The YVR Flight Crew landed in the Kamloops community recently for the 3rd annual Rotary Ribfest, which raises funds for seniors’ and children’s charities in the Kamloops area.

As part of its summer festival tour of B.C. communities, the YVR Flight Crew landed in the Kamloops community last month for the 3rd annual Rotary Ribfest. The event welcomed thousands of hungry families and rib connoisseurs to Riverside Park in Kamloops for a taste of ribs prepared by some of the best professional ribbers across North America. The barbecue teams of Gator BBQ, Misty Mountain BBQ, Smoke and Bones BBQ, Prairie Smoke and Spice, House of Q, and Boss Hog’s competed in the Rotary Ribfest cook-off, with Boss Hog’s taking first place and the People’s Choice Award. According to the YVR Flight Crew rib connoisseurs, Prairie Smoke and Spice, Gator BBQ

and Misty Mountain all deserved honourable mentions. Prairie’s ribs had a nice apple-wood flavour, balanced sauce and ribs that peeled of the bone with an easy tug. Gator BBQ probably had the best honey glaze, but the meat was declared a little tough. While Misty Mountain was a little heavy on the sauce, its ribs peeled of the bone just as easily as Prairie’s. While satisfying rib fanatics was one of the major attractions of the Rotary Ribfest, the event also included live musical entertainment and a family fun zone with outdoor games, bouncy castles and face painting stations. Organized by Daybreak Rotary Club, this event attracts up to 40,000 people annually to raise funds for seniors’ and children’s

Community charities in the Kamloops area. The YVR Flight Crew was also invited to the 4th Annual Vancouver Rib Festival, which formed a part of the celebration at the Fair at the PNE. There, Prairie Smoke and Spice took home first place and Misty Mountain BBQ claimed the People’s Choice Award. Owned by the City of Vancouver, the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is a non-profit charity organization dedicated to providing more than threemillion visitors a year with firstclass cultural, sporting and family entertainment events. Founded in 1910, the PNE operates from a 114-acre site at Hastings Park, a multi-facility venue in Vancouver where the organization operates four activity streams: an annual 15-day Fair, Playland Amusement Park, maintenance and care of the Hastings Park site and management of the site’s year-round facilities.

BorderXpress from page 1

The service is available without pre-registration or any fuss to the passenger. BorderXpress kiosks are a true success story in helping make travel better for every passenger. These kiosks are being used at 14 airport locations across North America, with plans to expand to 17 locations by October 2014. Since 2009, the Vancouver Airport Authority has enhanced and improved wait times at key crunch points in airport terminals. From pioneering Automated Border Clearance (ABC) to make the process for returning Canadian citizens fast and efficient, to BorderXpress APC, the kiosks are helping millions of people get to their destinations quickly and conveniently.

A fleet of 3,000 new and improved 2014 YVR Baggage Carts are now rolling throughout the terminals at YVR. Along with major upgrades to design and functionality, the carts are, most importantly, still free of charge for passengers and available terminal-wide. In addition to featuring a sleek, upright, ergonomic design, the 2014 Baggage Carts offer the following improvements over the airport’s old stalwart carts: • The new YVR Baggage Carts are nine kilograms lighter • The wheels are made of a

dual composite rubber for better grip and durability • The new carts have improved safety features with a new handbrake • The precision bearings make

YVR celebrates its #1 airport award with a Skytrax Thank You BBQ Earlier this year, YVR was named the Best Airport in North America for a fifth straight year at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. The exceptional honour marked only the second time in award history that any airport had earned top ranking five years in a row. The award was considered a tribute to the 24,000 people who work at YVR, its volunteers, business partners, customers and passengers who make the airport an economic driver, jobs creator and an airport that every British Columbian can be proud to call their own. Since April, the Vancouver Airport Authority has hosted a number of celebratory events at YVR to thank the entire Sea Island community for its contributions to the win, including a recent Skytrax summer barbeque.

Last month, the airport community joined together to drive, chip and put their way around the Quilchena Golf and Country Club in an event to raise funds for a great cause— YVR for Kids. Since its inception in the 1980s, more than $3.2-million has been raised for children’s charities and this year was no different. With live and silent auctions along with a gala at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, more than $200,000 went toward deserving kids in local communities. This annual gathering first began when law enforcement officers at YVR participated in a golf tournament for fun. When an airport employee lost their daughter Elise to cancer, the airport community banded

from YVR for Kids include Canucks Place Children’s Hospice, Air Canada Dreams Take Flight, Hopeair, Rubina Hope for Kids, The Richmond Christmas Fund and Canucks for Kids. For more information and details about YVR for Kids visit yvrforkids.com.

Airbus researches use of fuel cells for commercial airliners A new chapter has opened in the quest to make commercial air transport more environmentally and economically sustainable, with the agreement by Airbus and South Africa’s National Aerospace Centre to jointly fund research by Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) into the application of fuel cells on airliners. Airbus has identified hydrogen fuel cells as a future, emissions-free substitute to small gas turbine engines called Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), which are used for generating on-board electrical power and heat while an aircraft is on the ground. A fuel cell is a device that transforms the energy of hydrogen into electricity by combining the hydrogen with oxygen in a “cold” combustion. The only exhaust products are water, heat and oxygen-depleted air. Almost every airliner designed and built since the

advent of jet travel in the 1950s, has been equipped with an APU, which is located in the tapered tail cone section of the rear fuselage. Replacing the fossil-fuel powered APUs with hydrogen fuel cells would help achieve the aviation industry’s goals of emission-free and low-noise aircraft operation. In addition, fuel cells would reduce the overall weight of aircraft, leading to lower fuel burn and operating costs, together with further reduced carbon emissions during flight. As by-products, hydrogen fuel cells could enable aircraft to generate its own water supplies. Airbus has already performed test flights involving fuel cells to power individual emergency power systems, but the knowledge and technology maturation is still needed to permit the complete replacement of the electrical power systems with a multifunctional fuel cell.

Air Canada expands Preferred Seating options on North American flights Air Canada now offers an enhanced Preferred Seats program, which offers customers the choice of more seats with additional legroom aboard its North American flights and also makes it easier to book a Preferred Seat through multiple channels, including the web, airport kiosks and mobile devices. Preferred Seats typically provide 88.9 centimetres of legroom compared to standard Economy seats that offer between 78.74 centimetres and 83.82 centimetres. Air Canada recently completed a reconfiguration of its narrow-body aircraft to add more Preferred Seats fleetwide in its Economy Cabin. On its 97-seat Embraer 190 aircraft, the airline has increased the number of Preferred Seats to 24 from eight, while on its 146-

seat Airbus A320 aircraft the number has been increased to 36 from 16. Customers can further personalize their travel by selecting a Preferred Seat for individual legs of their journey or entire trip at the time of booking or at any time prior to boarding, via the airline’s website aircanada.com. Air Canada is also expanding its kiosk and mobile functions for booking Preferred Seats up until time of boarding. The cost for Preferred Seats starts at $20 per flight segment for a Tango fare and varies with the length of each flight leg and a customer’s Altitude frequent flier status. Preferred Seat locations on Air Canada aircraft are available at aircanada.com/en/about/fleet/ index.html.

Hope Air has a simple mission: To provide free flights for Canadians who are in financial need and must travel to healthcare.

Sleep: the importance of getting a good night’s worth Sleep deprivation is an unrecognized cause of many problems, including accidents, illness and poor job performance. Like good nutrition and exercise, adequate sleep is part of a healthy lifestyle. In general, most adults need about seven hours of sleep per night. Children and adolescents need even more, around nine or ten hours per night. The right amount of sleep is the amount that allows you wake up feeling refreshed and well. You may be able to function on the amount of sleep you are getting now, but it still may not be enough for you to reach your full potential. Here are some indicators that will tell if you are not getting enough sleep: • You need an alarm clock to wake up • You sleep longer and better on weekends • You have trouble getting out of bed in the morning • You feel tired during the day • You have bags or dark circles under your eyes • You doze off while sitting in a public place, such as a movie theatre or meeting • You get drowsy while driving • You have trouble concentrating • You have early morning

headaches Lack of sleep affects your productivity and in the long run can also damage your health. Tips on getting a good night’s sleep: Keep regular hours. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time every day, including weekends. Avoid taking long naps during the day. These could make it harder to fall asleep at night. A short power nap can be beneficial as long as you can sleep well during the night.

Develop a sleep ritual. If you do the same things before you go to bed each night, it will train your body to get ready for sleep. Take some time to relax and unwind before you go to sleep. Stretching, relaxation exercises, a hot shower or bath, meditation, or a glass of hot milk can be used to help relax and prepare for sleep. Avoid caffeine and medications (e.g., stimulants) in the evening. If you are on any medication, check with your doctor

or pharmacist on whether it will affect your sleep cycle. If you are taking a diuretic, take it in the morning. Diuretics increase urination, and this may keep you up at night if taken later in the day. Avoid drinking alcohol right before bedtime. Alcohol can interrupt sleep, leading to a poor quality of sleep. If you smoke, consider quitting. Smokers have more trouble falling asleep and awake more often during the night than non-smokers.

Make your bedroom “sleepfriendly.” The bedroom should be kept cool, dark and quiet. Try using a pair of foam earplugs, a fan, or a white noise generator to block noise. Get a comfortable mattress. If you wake up feeling stiff and sore, or if you aren’t sleeping as well as you were a year ago, it may be time for a new mattress. A good mattress should gently support all points of your body and give you enough room to move freely. Exercise regularly. This can help relieve stress and make it

easier to sleep. Don’t exercise too close to bedtime if you find this makes it harder for you to sleep. Don’t feel guilty about going to bed. Think of sleep as an investment in your health and productivity. If you try these tips and still find that you’re having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor. You may have a medical condition that is affecting your sleep. Also, check with your pharmacist to find out if any of the medications you are taking could be affecting your sleep.

Abbotsford Airshow attracts thousands to watch high flying routines

Around & About Events

Photos: Tariq Jamil

The 52nd annual Abbotsford International Airshow included something new this year, a Twilight Show performance complete with lights, pyrotechnics and flares on aircraft. “We did a teaser over Kitsilano Beach and English Bay [the week before the show], and Twitter lit up,” said airshow spokeswoman Jadene Mah. The Twilight Show, featured performers Matt Younkin and Dan Buchanan lighting up the sky in their aircraft and Paul Stender’s Jet School Bus lighting up the runway with jet afterburners and fireworks. History buffs were treated to the sight of a very rare deHavilland Mosquito in flight—one of just two airworthy Mosquitos in the world today, fly at the air show. The Mosquito, which was known as the ‘Wooden Wonder’ because its construction included plywood, was restored in British Columbia by Richmond collector Bob Jens, who purchased it in 2005. Other attractions through the weekend included the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, which opened the show, the Canadian Forces SkyHawks Parachute Demonstration Team, a Beechcraft Military T6-C Harvard II demo, and an Ultralight glider. There were more than 100 aircraft on site, with more than two dozen aerial acts and routines.

The iconic Snowbirds Demonstration Team is comprised of serving members of the Canadian Forces. Serving as Canadian ambassadors, the Snowbirds demonstrate the skill, professionalism and teamwork inherent in the women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Forces.

The Grumman F7F Tigercat was the first twin-engined fighter aircraft to enter service with the United States Navy.

Former Abbotsford Airshow president receives Award of Merit The North American branch of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots (HCAP) has awarded Ron Price, long-time former president of the Abbotsford International Airshow, the 2014 Award of Merit. The HCAP is a committed group of aviators, commercial, military and private, who contribute their expertise for the advancement of aviation safety, training and operations. It is part of the international organization, formerly the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, established in London in 1929.

Price, who has been a pilot for more than 40 years, has been an innovative leader in North American aviation for more three decades. Under his 14-year direction, the Abbotsford International Air show became one of the most successful air shows in Canada. In 1988, Price initiated a break-through in EastWest relations by persuading the Soviet Union to participate for the first time ever in North America. Price was also the founding chairman of

Airshow Canada, which later expanded and moved to Vancouver as Aerospace North America. In 2012, Price was named to the Order of Abbotsford. In 2013, he received a Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal. Price will receive the HCAP Award of Merit London’s medieval Guildhall on October 23, 2014. He will be joined by others who have been chosen for their commitment to the highest flying standards.

Air Transat’s Eco fares offer booking flexibility Holiday travel airline Air Transat has introduced new Eco Fares designed to offer booking flexibility for its Economy Class passengers. Eco Fares offer varying conditions for flight changes or cancellation and allows passengers to modify travel dates or even cancel their trip, if necessary.

Eco, offered at the best available rate, permits travellers to make changes upon payment of a fee. Eco Extra, allows changes at a lower fee than Eco. Eco Max, offers maximum flexibility by permitting changes and cancellations at the lowest fee available.

“Because each vacation is unique, we’re pleased to provide vacationers with more choices with the introduction of our new Eco Fares,” said Jean-François Lemay, Air Transat general manager. “Travellers were already able to select their onboard level of service by opting either for Economy Class, Option Plus or

Upcycling airplane leather into shoes and soccer balls After a recent large-scale redesign of many of its 737 aircraft, U.S.-based Southwest Airlines found itself with an excess of 80,000 leather seat covers—enough to fill the Empire State Building. The replacement of the airline’s leather seat coverings with a durable lightweight material was done in order to reduce aircraft weight—272 kilograms per plane—and thus fuel consumption. Southwest reached out to potential partners to take the used leather, but found that there were

that will use them to provide job training and health education. The main partner is SOS Children’s Village Kenya, which is providing paid apprenticeships and training to orphaned youth, who in turn make shoes and soccer balls from the leather. The shoes will be given to Maasai Treads, which distributes them as part of a campaign to fight debilitating foot parasites. The soccer balls will be donated to Alive & Kicking, a charity that uses sport to educate young people on HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention.

In 2012, Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson touched down at YVR to kick off the inaugural Virgin Atlantic seasonal service.

Virgin Atlantic’s summer seasonal direct service from Vancouver to London Heathrow will not return after this season’s service ends on October 11, 2014. Virgin currently operates five flights per week from Vancouver, its only Canadian destination. Virgin is also ending service between London and Tokyo’s Narita airport; between London and Mumbai, India, on February 1; and winter seasonal service to Cape Town, South Africa, after April 2015.

Virgin plans to strengthen its North American services through its partnership with Delta Air Lines, which acquired a 49 per cent stake in the U.K.-based airline last year. Delta serves Vancouver from three of its U.S. hubs—Seattle, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City. According to a Virgin Atlantic spokesperson, the airline will continue to service the Vancouver market via a onestop service on Delta Airlines connecting through Seattle or Minneapolis.

Palm Springs boasts one of the world’s best aviation museums The desert resort city of Palm Springs, California, is well known to Canadians as a yearround getaway that features all forms of entertainment and recreational activities. What may not be as widely known is that Palm Springs is also home to one of the world’s largest collections of flyable World War II aircraft. Located on the north-east side of the Palm Springs International Airport, the Palm Springs Air Museum includes three main air-conditioned display hangars, theatre, gift shop, ramp and airport access for flight demonstrations and visiting planes. This is one of the few avia-

tion museums in which visitors can climb inside the exhibits, talk to a pilot or enjoy a biplane ride. Pre-arranged group tours are accommodated any day of the week between the hours of 10am and 3pm. The tours are led by trained volunteer museum guides, many of whom are veterans and former pilots. According to the museum’s managing director Fred Bell, it is not uncommon for guides to have flown one of the types of aircraft at the museum in Korea or Vietnam. A couple being married in traditional kimono wear.

Japan’s traditional garment for more than 1,000 years, the kimono represents Japanese culture and spirit. Some Japanese still wear kimonos daily, but many only wear it for special occasions and traditional activities such as weddings, tea ceremonies and Kabuki theatre-going. If you are visiting Japan and would like to enjoy the unique cultural experience of wearing a kimono, consider a stay at the Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo. This hotel, which re-flagged in 2013 after 20 years as Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Chinzan-so, has introduced a new service for its international guest, both ladies and gentlemen—traditional kimono rentals and fittings. A kimono expert will visit your hotel room and dress you in kimono. The kimono can be returned the next morning, so you can go out to Kabuki theatre, surprise your friends at a party or enjoy other outings dressed in kimono. “Wearing kimono gives you a special feeling,” said

Koichi Urashima, general manager of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo. “However, it hasn’t been easy for overseas visitors to enjoy this experience. The kimono is ‘wearable art,’ and expensive. It’s also complicated to put on. We are very excited that we’ve finally found a way to offer this quintessentially Japanese experience to our international guests, both ladies and gentlemen. Our renowned Japanese botanical garden is the perfect backdrop for wearing kimono.” Guests are required to make an appointment a week in advance. The cost starts at $193, and includes an English guided tour of Chinzanso garden, with its numerous botanical species and birds. The hotel also offers other options, such as a tea ceremony experience in kimono at the hotel’s authentic teahouse, at an additional cost. For more information, visit hotel-chinzanso-tokyo.com. Flight City: New name, same Sea Island location A change has taken place to a long-time aviation retail outlet on Sea Island. The pilot supplies, books, clothing, models and everythingaviation superstore, formerly known as Aviation World, located on Russ Baker Way will reopen mid-September under the re-branded name of Flight City Enterprises Ltd. The former owners of Toronto-based Aviation World made the decision to regroup in order to focus on their Eastern operation. Their change in focus allowed store manager Don Mann the opportunity to purchase the assets of the Sea Island business, which will now be run

as a locally owned and operated aviation store under the Flight City brand name. “I believe that the business model for the store remains solid, and our future success is based on the belief that there is a strong demand in the Vancouver area for aviation-related products,” said Mann. Plans call for a soft launch of the updated store in mid-September, to be followed with a grand opening sometime in November. Mann and his staff look forward to renewing old relations and welcoming new customers to the new and improved facilities. For more information, contact flightcityyvr@gmail.com.

Vancouver West Return-It Depot introduces Return-It Express drop-off service

Thanks to provincial bottlereturn deposit systems in B.C., almost one-billion beverage containers were recycled and diverted from landfills last year. Encorp Pacific (Canada), a not-for-profit, federally incorporated company that operates a BC-wide Return-It program, recently launched Return-It Express, a pilot program that offers consumers a new option to recycle their used beverage containers without having to sort them first. Return-It Express takes care of the sorting and credits the deposit refunds to the consumer’s

online account. Those refunds can then be redeemed for e-gift cards, a cheque or assigned to a favourite charity. “This is a great system for people in a hurry who want to bypass line ups and the time needed to sort their containers,” said Min Kim, who operates two Return-It depots, including a recently opened state-of-the-art facility in Marpole. “All you do is punch in your phone number, stick on the printed labels and drop your bags in the Express Kiosk chute and we take care of the rest.” For those interested in using

5 Field Morey and his 2013 Cessna Corvalis TTx , which will be flown in the Capital Air Tour (PRNewsFoto/Capital Air Tour).

The challenge of flying a private, general aviation airplane to all 49 state capitals in the Lower 48 plus Alaska in just two weeks is one that most private pilots would never accept. It is, however, the flight plan for a journey being attempted by two veteran U.S. pilots. Called the Capital Air Tour, the flight will be flown by Field Morey, a FAAcertified flight instructor; and Conrad Teitell, an attorney. The pilots will use Morey’s 2013 Cessna Corvalis TTx four passenger airplane for the flight, departing Tuesday, September 16, 2014, and landing in several states each day. “The Cessna Corvalis TTx is the fastest single-engine, fixed gear production aircraft on the market and has a maximum cruising speed of 235 knots,” said Morey. “With that level of performance, we are able to plan a mission profile for the Capital Air Tour that involves covering [more than 19,000 kilometres] with stops at 57 airports in two weeks.”

Morey is an expert in adventure flights, having instructed hundreds of instrument flight students on exciting real-world weather flights to Alaska, the Rocky Mountains and the Idaho backcountry through his company, Morey’s West Coast Adventures. The entire flight will be tracked using an on-board Spot Generation 3 GPS tracking device showing the real-time location of the Corvalis TTx and will offer school teachers a chance to give lessons in time, distance—and U.S. state capitals. A complete itinerary with tentative schedule, along with the tracking map, is available for the public to follow at ifrwest.com/cat. Morey’s Corvalis airplane is nicknamed The Green Hornet and is equipped with a Garmin G2000 glass cockpit panel that includes NEXRAD radar for storm avoidance, anti-ice equipment and terrain and traffic avoidance devices, along with the latest autopilot technology, essential for avoiding crew fatigue.

All-new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5.

2003 Chevrolet Impala.

A vehicle’s heater core is a mini radiator that sits inside the heater box under the vehicle’s dash. It uses heat from the engine’s cooling system to warm the vehicle’s cabin. The most common reason for heater core failures is leakage, followed by flow blockage, which results in little or no heat being produced. When heater cores leak, the result is the vehicle’s floor and carpet being soaked through with engine coolant. There will also likely be steam on the windshield when the car’s defroster is turned on and a strong odour of engine coolant will be present. This is precisely what hap-

pened to the Chevrolet Impala shown here. But there was more—the engine coolant in this car was in very poor condition and contained a lot of rust. Rust occurs from poor cooling system maintenance and/or using a weak antifreeze mixture with too much water. Part of our service on this vehicle was to perform a thorough cooling system flush. The problem is that once a vehicle has this amount of rust, it is almost impossible to completely remove it without completely dismantling and cleaning the engine. The radiator and heater core and all its cooling system hoses and pipes will need to be replaced—an incredibly expensive repair. We proceeded to replace the heater core and vacuumed and washed the coolant from the carpets. We flushed the cooling system and refilled it with fresh new antifreeze. Proper heat was restored and the cooling system will now keep the engine cool.

Heater Core removed from 2003 Chevrolet Impala. Note the very rusty coolant that was inside the core. This will be present in the rest of the cooling system.

While many Japanese and European cars will never experience a leaking heater core, American-made vehicles have suffered from more frequent failures. The cost of the heater core is usually inexpensive, but the labour cost can be very high. Though it’s no guarantee, the best way to prevent the failure of a heater core is through proper cooling system maintenance.

Mazda recently unveiled the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 (known as Roadster in Japan) to the U.S., Japanese and Spanish markets. The all-new MX-5, which adopts both SKYACTIV technology and Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design language—will be rolled out to global markets starting in 2015. “Innovate in order to preserve” was the motto for the fourth generation, as the Mazda development team searched for innovations that go beyond simple evolution. Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model’s original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can. The design of the all-new MX-5 reveals another layer to

Mazda’s KODO design language. The proportions make the driver and passenger stand out, and both the interior and exterior evoke the exhilaration of opentop driving. It is the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far and is more than 100 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces, promising a dramatic leap in Jinba-ittai driving fun. Literally translated, Jinba-itta means, “Person horse one-body,” a term originally used in relation to horse-mounted archery, where an archer needs to be in complete communication with his mount. As of July 2014, total production volume of the Mazda MX-5 exceeded 940,000 units and it continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the best-selling two-seater sports car. This highlycelebrated model has received more than 200 awards from around the globe including Japan Car of the Year 2005-2006.

Answer:

Bombardier CRJ200

The CRJ200 aircraft was based on the Canadair Challenger design, which was purchased by Canadair from Bill Lear in 1976. In 1987, studies began for a much more ambitious stretched configuration, leading to the formal launch of the Canadair Regional Jet program in the spring of 1989. The Canadair name was retained despite the fact that Bombardier had bought out the company. The CRJ200 is a small airliner that is designed to fly passengers on short-haul flights, usually feeding larger carriers’ hubs from small markets.
