Marilyn Columbus, chapel volunteer; and Arthur Sacramento, British Columbia Visitor Centre staff member, pin their hometowns on the new world map at YVR Chapel.
Vancouver Airport Chaplaincy (VAC), an interfaith organization that serves the travelling public, Sea Island community and YVR employees, has unveiled a new world map at the YVR Chapel. Everyone is welcome to visit the Chapel, located at International Arrivals, level 2, and pinpoint the location of their hometown on the new map. “We’re hoping the map will
eventually be filled with pins of people’s hometowns,” said Chaplain Dennis Kirkley. “The Vancouver Airport Chaplaincy wants to get a sense of the international nature of our community and provide a visual demonstration of its diversity.” As Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving this month, the Sea Island community is also being encouraged to stop by the Chapel and share a story on “Why you are thankful,” for a
chance to win a gift certificate from a YVR restaurant and a mug to keep beverages warm in the days ahead. VAC’s team of chaplains and volunteers is available from 9am to 7pm daily to provide support, counsel, practical assistance and spiritual direction to people of all faiths, as well as those without. For more information on VAC or the YVR Chapel, visit yvrchaplaincy.org.

Qantas recently announced it will operate six direct return flights between Australia and Vancouver in January 2015. The flights will take advantage of the seasonal peak in travel during the Canadian winter. “We are delighted that Qantas is looking at our North American market and giving passengers a great product and experience along this route,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This supplementary product will boost tourism and business and provide more choice for Canadians looking to escape the winter chill for some much-needed sun and to Australians who want to
make the most of our great ski resorts.” Qantas will operate flights from January 3, 2015 to January 22, 2015, using a reconfigured Boeing 747 aircraft with fully flat Skybeds in business class, plus A380-style seats in premium economy and economy classes. Flights will depart from Sydney on Saturdays and Wednesdays at 2:30pm arriving at 9:45am. Flights will leave Vancouver on Sundays and Thursdays at 11:45pm and arrive at 10:25am (+2 days). Power Smart Day at YVR celebrates ways of reducing energy consumption October is Power Smart Month, during which British Columbians can learn easy ways to save energy and money at home and at work. To celebrate Power Smart month, a BC Hydro Power Smart team will be onsite in the Domestic Terminal Building, Level 3, on October 17, 2014— Power Smart Day at YVR. Along with interactive displays and an information booth, free swag will be distributed from 10:30am to 2:30pm. YVR is a proud supporter of energy conservation and Power
Smart Month. As a testament, over the past few years the environment and maintenance departments at YVR have been actively identifying ways to reduce energy consumption. One highly visible example includes new light-emitting diode (LED) light fixtures on the Arthur Laing Bridge, creating a more welcoming experience for travellers and an approximate annual savings of 77,700 kilowatt hours. Additional upgrades include new custom-built LEDs in the Domestic Terminal Building check-in area and solar powered
water-heating systems. Every year, BC Hydro Power Smart offers programs and incentives for customers to become more energy efficient. Since 2007, British Columbians have saved about 4,500 gigawatt hours per year of electricity, the equivalent of powering 425,000 B.C. homes annually. Saving energy saves the province money and helps British Columbia costeffectively meet a large portion of its energy needs, and throughout the month of October rebates on energy-efficient appliances and products will be available at retail

New Air Canada rouge seasonal service from YVR to Osaka Starting next summer, Air Canada will introduce direct nonstop service between Vancouver and Osaka, Japan. The service is planned to begin May 1, 2015 and will be operated by Air Canada rouge with five flights per week from YVR to Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka. Air Canada rouge will operate a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on the route and offer a choice of economy and premium cabin service. “We are delighted that Air Canada has chosen to expand its network at YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Not only is Japan a desirable destination for British Columbians, this new route will also bring growth, hundreds of jobs and economic benefit to the whole province.” The non-stop service to Osaka will bolster YVR’s current service to Japan; YVR currently offers the most capacity to Japan of any other Canadian airport. Air
Canada and Japan Airlines both operate non-stop daily service to Tokyo Narita. In March 2014, All Nippon Airways began non-stop daily service to Tokyo Haneda. “We are very pleased to add Osaka to our international route network with the introduction of the only non-stop flights from Canada to Kansai International Airport starting May 1,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines, Air Canada. “We expect this new seasonal service to be particularly popular with vacation travellers from Osaka seeking the renowned scenic beauty, outdoor activities and culture of Vancouver and B.C., as well as with North American customers travelling to Japan’s second largest metropolitan centre. The flights to Kansai International Airport have been timed to connect conveniently at Air Canada’s Vancouver hub to and from our extensive North American network.” Air Canada rouge flights from YVR to KIX are planned
Beginning next summer, Air Canada will introduce new non-stop service between Vancouver and Osaka, Japan, using A319 aircraft.
to begin May 1, 2015, subject to government approval, and will operate up to five times weekly until October 24, 2015. Flight AC 1927, departs Vancouver at 12:05pm, arriving in Osaka at 2:55pm (next day), Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Flight AC 1928, departs Osaka at 4:25pm, arriving in Vancouver at 9:55am, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Boeing forecasts world air cargo traffic to double in next 20 years

Boeing’s latest World Air Cargo Forecast is projecting air cargo traffic growth at an annual rate of 4.7 per cent over the next 20 years. Global air freight traffic is expected to more than double by 2033. Boeing has published its biennial World Air Cargo Forecast since 1986. “We see strong signs of a recovery as air freight traffic levels continue to strengthen after several years of stagnation,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The air cargo market is now growing at nearly the long-term rates.” World air cargo traffic began to grow again in second quarter of 2013 with growth reaching 4.4 per cent for the first seven months of 2014, compared to the same period a year earlier. If this trend continues, 2014 will be the highest growth year for the air freight industry since 2010. Much of the weak air cargo growth in the previous years is attributed to two principal causes—an underperforming world economy and lacklustre trade growth, particularly in those traditional commodities served by the air cargo industry. The Boeing forecast shows Asia-North America and EuropeAsia will continue to be the dominant world air cargo markets, with the most traffic volume. Intra-Asia, domestic China and Asia-North America markets are expected to have the fastest
rates of growth over the next 20 years. With increased air cargo traffic, the world freighter fleet is also expected to grow with deliveries of 840 new factory-built airplanes and 1,330 passengerto-freighter aircraft conversions. More than 52 per cent of those deliveries are expected to replace retiring airplanes and the remainder used for growth. More than 70 per cent of the new factory-built airplanes scheduled to deliver between 2014 and 2033 are forecast to be large freighters, such as the 747-8 and 777. “Boeing is committed to the cargo industry like no other company,” said Tinseth. “Our complete line-up of efficient, highly capable freighters is well positioned to continue to carry more than half of the world’s air cargo traffic as the market continues to strengthen.” Boeing’s World Air Cargo Forecast 2014/2015 is available at boeing.com/boeing/commercial/cargo.

Airlines WestJet signs code-share agreement with China Airlines
Pictured is the first of 10 Boeing 777-300ERs that Taiwanese flag carrier China Airlines plans to fly in the coming years.
This month, China Airlines celebrated the receipt of its first 777-300ER (Extended Range) aircraft. The airline configured its 777-300ER to seat 358 passengers in a three-class layout highlighted by the new ‘Family Couch’ seats in economy class, where

WestJet has entered into a code-share agreement with China Airlines, which allows the Taiwanese flag carrier to begin marketing and selling WestJetoperated flights. China Airlines’ code-share designations will be available on select WestJet flights from Vancouver. “We are very excited to announce a code-share partnership with WestJet’s oldest interline partner,” said Chris Avery, vice-president, network planning, alliances, and corporate development. “Just a few years ago, WestJet’s agreement with China Airlines laid the groundwork for
future interline and code-share agreements as part of our airline partnership strategy. “With 38 partnerships now in place, we continue to bring topquality airlines on board, along with more services to market for the business traveller. The success of this combined strategy plays a part in WestJet’s consistently strong results and this [code-share agreement with China Airlines] underscores our efforts,” said Avery. Since 2011, WestJet has initiated code-shares with American Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China
Southern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Korean Air, Qantas and now China Airlines. Additionally, WestJet has 26 interline relationships, further connecting passengers worldwide to WestJet’s network. “China Airlines began flying to Canada in 2000 and offers daily non-stop flights from Taipei to Vancouver,” said China Airlines’ spokesperson Jeffrey Kuo. “We are thrilled to expand our reach in Canada with WestJet’s codeshare service.” Bookings can be made through china-airlines.com, or a travel agency.

Conference Board report says economic climate in Western Canada right for low-cost airlines
Headquartered on Sea Island, HMY Airways began operations in 2002, offering holiday flights from Canada to Mexico, Hawaii, Las Vegas and Manchester before ending scheduled flight service on April 9, 2007.

Why Bell?
According to a report by the Conference Board of Canada, Western Canada’s strong economic growth and the growing demand for air travel could provide the right conditions for the entry of new ultra-low cost airlines. While ultra-low cost carriers are virtually unknown in Canada, other markets such as Europe and Asia are no strangers to the concept.
According to the report, two new airlines—Jetlines and Jet Naked—might fill this space within the next couple of years, providing they raise enough capital. Both of these airlines have former aviation industry leaders at the helm and both plan to fly to sun destinations and underserved western Canadian markets at a fraction of the cost of Air Canada and WestJet. The Conference Board report says the number of air travellers is growing at a much greater rate in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba than in Central or Atlantic Canada. While the report noted that ultra-cheap fares would attract a new segment of travellers—those don’t normally fly—a cautionary note on the riskiness of launching a discount carrier was also sounded. Over the past 20 years, discount Canadian airlines Jetsgo, Harmony Awards, Zoom Airlines and Canada 3000 have all failed.

Every year, the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation exhibition in England draws some of the most famous and rare aircraft in the world. This year’s exhibition, held on September 12, once again lived up to expectations with a display of rare aircraft that included a 1948 Tempco Globe Swift GC-1B whose previous owner’s father was taught to fly at 14 years old by aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright—and who even had the latter’s signature on the licence. The aircraft that was declared this year’s winner—chosen from a selection of 30 beautifully
maintained aeroplanes and helicopters produced up to 1966— was an exquisite 1949 Cessna 195 Businessliner. The judges agreed that the 1949 Cessna, the first to be constructed entirely from aluminium, was their favourite machine on display. Also present were a 1942 Douglas C-47 Dakota, an example of one of the 2,000-strong group of transport aircraft that was also used by the RAF, an American Aeronca TA Champ and a 1960s Czech Morovan-Zlin Z326, which had to undergo a 10-hour journey to make it to the exhibition.

Taking care of your vision: a plan for healthy eyes The world can be a harsh place for your eyes. There are many daily activities that may increase the risk of eye injury and strain, including some that may seem surprising. By being aware of the possible risks, you can protect yourself from eye damage and strain. Certain work situations, including handling hazardous chemicals, using power tools, and being exposed to flying particles, have a high risk of eye damage. In these situations, it is important to follow your workplace safety measures, wear proper eye protection and know the location of the nearest eyewash or first-aid station. In some jobs, the risks are unexpected. If you work with computers or VDTs (video display terminals) for more than an hour each day, you are at a high risk of eyestrain. This can lead to headaches, blurred vision and difficulty working. Try to take a break from computer use for 15 minutes every two hours, or for 10 minutes per hour during intensive work. Check your screen to make sure there is no glare (from a window
or lamp) on the screen. Usually, the screen should be 10 to 20 degrees below your eye level. Your optometrist can recommend a set-up for your screen and work station that would be best for you. The Canadian Association of Optometrists also recommends that you get an eye exam every one to two years. People who may be at higher risk of vision problems may need to have more frequent eye exams. In addition to regular eye exams, you should also have an eye exam if you have any concerns about your vision, or if you injure your eyes in any way. You might need a check-up if: • you have trouble reading small print or doing close work such as sewing or crafts • you need to hold newspapers
and books further away in order to read them • you get headaches or tired, burning eyes after reading or working on a computer • you have difficulty seeing at night or seeing street signs while driving • your eyes are irritated, dry, red, or sensitive • you see spots, flashes of light, or floaters • you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes • you are in school and are having trouble reading or learning • you have started handling chemicals, using power tools, or engaging in sports that may be hazardous to your eyes Most sports have some risk for eye injury. Those with the
highest risk are contact sports, racquet sports and sports involving a ball or puck. Before starting a new sport, find out what kind of eye protection is recommended. You should be able to find this information from sports-governing bodies, coaches, or sports stores. If you enjoy outdoor sports or activities, make sure your eyes are protected from ultraviolet (UV) light with a pair of sunglasses or goggles certified to block UVA and UVB light. Contact lenses can also be a source of eye injuries or infection. Using dirty or damaged lenses can lead to eye infection, scratches on the cornea (eye surface), or other eye problems. To reduce risk the risk of infection, always clean and store your lenses as recommended by
your optometrist or eye doctor. Do not share lenses or solutions, and throw away your solutions when they reach their expiry date, or one month after they are first opened. Don’t use your lenses for lon-
ger than recommended (i.e., if you have daily disposable lenses, don’t try to make them last for a week). If you think you might have eye damage or an infection, or if anything else worries you, stop using the lenses and check with your optometrist. It is a good idea to have a pair of glasses on hand in case you need to remove the lenses. Eyes and vision are something no one wants to be without. To keep them working properly for many years to come, protect them now and take the best care of them that you can.

One annual event, the Vancouver Aviation Show, provides seasoned and new collectors with the opportunity to view and acquire a wide variety of airline and aviation memorabilia, spanning everything from aircraft slides, photos, playing cards, pins, aviation DVDs, books and inflight magazines to airline barf bags, schedules and diecast aircraft models. “We are extremely lucky to have some of the leading collectors in their fields participate in this show,” said show organizer Henry Tenby. “Many of this country’s great aviation pioneers from the 1950s are now passing on and, sadly, their collections of aviation mementos, photos, books, slides, models, brochures and what-haveyou end up in the rubbish bin. Family members sometimes have no idea that an active aviation collectibles community exists in this country.” One of the collections that will be seen at the show is that of James Neilson, a recently retired commercial airline pilot from New Westminster, who has built up one of the country’s largest

collections of Canadian airline wings and insignia. His collection spans from the founding bush airline days of the 1920s to current day. Neilson will be bringing a large number of his surplus wings for sale and trade. Hamish Telford from Abbotsford specializes in historic airline and airport postcards and is also one of the country’s leading collectors in this area. The entire evolution of flight has been documented in the realm of postcards—from the Wright Brothers, to breaking the sound barrier, the mass development of airline networks in the 1950s, to space travel and current aircraft. Telford will have a special selection of his ultra rare, airlineissued card collection offered for sale and trade. Old aviation books are another area of keen interest. Jerry Vernon and Jim Jorgenson of the Canadian Aviation Historical Foundation will be offering old
ephemera including a number of decades-old Jane’s “All the World’s Aircraft” tomes. Other dealers will offer a wide variety of vintage books, magazines and airline and manufacturer brochures from years past. Popular collectible verticals will include vintage aircraft models that were made by manufacturers to showcase new aircraft and 1940s to 1960s aircraft models used by travel agencies. Vintage 35-millimetre kodachrome slides of aircraft, which are also highly sought after by aviation historians, journalists and collectors, will also be available. Mark the date and come out between 10am and 5pm to the Richmond Rod & Gun Club auditorium (Cambie and River Road), just steps from the Cananda Line Aberdeen Station in Richmond on Saturday October 18, 2014.

Increasingly, people are travelling with their pets; including them on vacations, getaways, and weekend trips. Pet owners have a different list of concerns when travelling with pets than those who are not. With research and planning, working your pet’s needs into every step of the itinerary can be easy and ensure that both you and your pet have a good trip. First, consider how you are going to be travelling. Are you driving? Flying? Hopping on board a train? It is most likely that you will use one or more of these methods of travel to get to your vacation destination. Each comes with its own concerns for transporting your pet. If you are flying, time of the flight and size of the pet will likely impact your plans. Most airlines will let you know how and when they transport pets for maximum comfort. If, however, you have a pet small enough to fit under the seat, you can fly any time. On long trips by car or train, your pet will need to move around about once every three hours. In either case, remember to hydrate your pet and avoid feeding them a full meal before a journey in order to avoid upset stomachs. If your pet is kennel
or crate-trained, bring that receptacle with you as your pet will feel more safe and secure in it. Look for pet-friendly hotels on the internet and travel sites and ask friends who have travelled with pets where they have stayed. Hotels that claim to be pet friendly are often only pet tolerant Phone hotels and find out what their policies are regarding pets—will they provide a bed and other useful items such as maps to local dog parks? These are the hotels to book your stay, the ones with few restrictions, offering services that treat pets as guests in their own right. Don’t just look for pet-friend-
ly hotels, but also pet-friendly restaurants. When travelling with a pet, keep it on your schedule, even if there is a time change. Bring food, bowls, bedding, toys and leash to ensure that they are comfortable and have familiar items to ease their travel anxiety. Never leave them alone in a hotel room, cabin, or other space. Remember, pets are like children—not everyone likes them. Keep them on a leash at all times and never let them bother other people. Pets are part of our families and need to be taken care of with love, attention and discipline.

California is a year-round travel destination, with weather that will please everyone from snowbirds to sun worshippers. The best time to visit really comes down to what you want to do and what you want to see. Fall (September through November) is a good time to avoid the crowds and it can be an especially beautiful time to see Northern California and the state’s wine regions. San Francisco, often shrouded in fog all summer long, sees some of its sunniest days during its “Indian Summer,” which generally lasts from September through October. If you plan to ski, visit between December and February, where the Sierra Nevada almost always has snow. It’s not uncommon for ski resorts to open by late October, but the snow is rarely as good as it will be later in the season. Lift lines are mobbed between mid December and the first week of January when everyone hits the slopes during their holiday break. Here are some fun and unique experiences that can only be found in California and go

It’s all about the Smokehouse name When Rico Verzosa and his wife CeeCee arrived in Canada from the Philippines in 2011, his background was not that of restaurateur. While the restaurant business ran in his family, Verzosa’s passport had Film Maker stamped on it. Back then, music videos, commercials and short films were his passion. That creative spirit, essential in film-making, took hold when he decided to follow his other passion—cooking—and become a restaurateur.
Living in Richmond and experiencing the wide variety of food on offer led to Verzosa’s mission to open Smokehouse Sandwich Co. in November 2013, specializing in smoked meat sandwiches. “We use a dry rub technique, not the brining style used in Montreal smoked meats,” said Verzosa. “We experimented with the flavours and came up with our own unique spice rubs and sauces for both meats and seafood.”
Six sandwiches with names like ‘Samson’—coffee crusted, strawberry-glazed beef brisket— and ‘Wilbur’—cumin-spiced pulled pork—are currently on the menu, along with a choice of specialty drinks uniquely created and served in sealed jars for mixing before consuming. Everything in the restaurant is eco-friendly, from the handmade furniture and recycled oil to the zero-waste policy. “One day I hope to run our delivery van on the recycled veg-

etable oil,” said Verzosa. That delivery service is one part of their next project called the Smokehouse Deli. Located next door to the restaurant, work is well underway with openingday scheduled for November. Customers will be able to buy all the ingredients to make their
own smoked meat sandwiches at home, including Smokehouse’s own brand of sauces and drinks, just like those served in the restaurant. Party packs, picnic baskets and delivery will also be part of the services offered. If you enjoy the smoked meat experience in the form of

Emerging markets and urbanization driving air traffic growth One hundred years have passed since the world’s first paying passenger took to the skies in 1914. Today, 32-million flights carry three-billion passengers and 50-million tonnes of freight a year. Globally, the aviation sector’s economic impact is estimated at US$2.4-trillion annually. Aviation is now so integral to jobs, to commerce and to international trade that it has become a necessity. In the next 20 years (20142033), according to Airbus’ Global Market Forecast, passenger traffic will grow annually at 4.7 per cent, driving a need for around 31,400 new passenger and freighter aircraft—100 seats and
above—worth US$4.6-trillion. The passenger and freighter fleet will increase from today’s 18,500 aircraft to 37,500 by 2033, an increase of nearly 19,000 aircraft. Some 12,400 older less fuel-efficient passenger and freighter aircraft will be retired. “Aviation is growing impressively and our latest forecast confirms its long term growth. While mature aviation regions such as Europe and North America will continue to grow, Asia will stand out along with emerging markets for dynamic development,” said John Leahy, Airbus CEO, customers. “This growth trend is confirmed by

Chinese domestic traffic becoming the world’s number one aviation market within the next 10 years.” In the widebody market, Airbus foresees a continuing trend towards larger models, with aircraft flying on long haul routes
and also on an increasingly wide range of regional and domestic sectors. As a result, Airbus forecasts a requirement for nearly 9,300 widebody passenger and freighter aircraft over the next 20 years, valued at some US$2.5trillion. This represents 30 per
cent of all new aircraft deliveries over the forecast period and 55 per cent by value. Traffic growth has led to average aircraft sizes being at least 40 per cent larger than 1980s models, with airlines selecting larger aircraft or up-
sizing existing backlogs. A focus on sustainable growth has contributed to fuel burn and noise reductions of at least 70 per cent in the last 40 years and this trend continues with innovations that are being seen in newer aircraft.
Air Canada reaches new agreement with Air Canada Pilots Association Air Canada has reached a new agreement with the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA), subject to ratification, on collective agreement terms for 10 years. The agreement is subject to ratification by the Association’s membership comprising the airline’s approximately 3,000 pilots, as well as certain openers and benchmarks over the 10-year period. Details of the agreement, reached before the expiration in April 2016 of the current collective agreement, will not be
released, pending ratification by the Association and approval by the Air Canada Board of Directors. “This new, 10-year agreement with the Air Canada Pilots Association is an important development which, if ratified, will allow us to further accelerate the implementation of our business strategy and support long term profitable growth for the benefit of Air Canada and our pilots,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines, Air Canada.
Air Canada is Canada’s largest domestic and international airline, serving more than 180 destinations on five continents. It is among the 20 largest airlines in the world and in 2013 served more than 35-million customers. Air Canada provides scheduled passenger service directly to 60 Canadian cities, 49 destinations in the United States and 73 cities in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Mexico and South America. New logo and signage identifying the former Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel as the Pacific Gateway Hotel at Vancouver Airport will be hoisted on November 1, 2014.
On November 1, 2014, a new logo and name will be hoisted on Sea Island’s Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel. Rebranded as the Pacific Gateway Hotel at Vancouver Airport, local ownership, management and staff of the hotel will remain unchanged, providing a seamless transition from the Delta brand to an affiliation with the world-renowned Preferred Hotel Group—a global collection of more than 650 independent hotels in 85 countries. The Pacific Gateway Hotel at Vancouver Airport will continue an extensive refurbishment program that started in
the spring—new marina with additional mooring space, upgraded utilities and accessories, fresh and enhanced landscaping, significant changes to both of the hotel’s restaurants, upgrades to existing meeting and conference spaces and new look to the hotel lobby with an interactive new lobby bar and social space. The hotel also offers the convenience of a dedicated 24/7 complimentary shuttle service to and from Vancouver International Airport and connectivity throughout the hotel and grounds. Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik
Saving money can sometimes be costly It’s been said that if you want to save money you should buy the best first. This is frequently true when it comes to auto repairs. We recently did two repairs that perfectly highlight this point—both done on the same 2003 Volkswagen TDI Jetta. Several months ago, our client brought in a very sick vehicle. The diesel engine had its ‘check engine’ light on and severely lacked power. After performing our usual thorough diagnosis, we determined two things: the turbocharger actuator needed repairing, and the intake system was plugged with carbon deposits. We removed the intake manifold and cleaned out the carbon deposits. That service was straightforward but time-consuming. The turbo actuator was less straightforward. This part comes complete with the turbocharger and the best repair that could be done was to replace it with a new unit. Unfortunately, the new part was very expensive and Solution for October 2014
Solution for Crossword Puzzle October 2014 Crossword.
Brand new turbo assembly for 2003 VW TDI Jetta—this unit is integral to the exhaust manifold and is electronically controlled by the powertrain computer to provide very precise turbo boost. The actuator is the black part on the bottom.
since we provide our clients with options, we found a good used part from an auto wrecker, which was considerably cheaper than a new unit. We estimated repairs with both the new and used part. We also presented the risks and benefits associated with each. To save money, our client chose the used turbocharger fully aware that there was only a fourmonth warranty and in the event of part failure there would be no labour charges included to remove the part. We installed the used part, which solved the problem—the car’s power improved significantly and the ‘check engine’ light went off. Unfortunately, a few months later the ‘check engine’ light came on again and the vehicle
began to show a slight lack of power when the car was loaded with passengers and going up steep hills. The warranty period had passed and even though the car was infinitely better than when it was first brought to us, it was still not right. After great contemplation, the owner decided to do the repair that should have been done in the first place—install a brand new turbocharger assembly. Several months have passed since this repair was performed and all is now working well. Being a TDI Jetta, the vehicle will likely last for many years. In the final analysis, this vehicle’s owner spent a great deal more money than he would have if he had bought the new part first.

Ever wondered how a fuel cell vehicle works?
2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle.
Fuel cell vehicles are powered by amazing technology, generating electricity from hydrogen through an electrochemical process within a fuel cell stack. Vehicles that use this technology combine the best attributes of gasoline- and battery-powered cars, resulting in a clean, long-range vehicle with fast refuelling times. Earlier this summer, Hyundai leased its first mass-produced 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle to the first consumer in Southern California.
How it works: 1. Hydrogen fuel stored in its tank is supplied to the fuel cell stack. 2. Inflow of air is supplied to the fuel stack. 3. The reaction of air and hydrogen in the fuel cell stack generates electricity and water. 4. The electricity generated is supplied to the motor and battery. 5. What comes out after all of this? Pure water. Hyundai has also developed an animated infographic to show how it works, which can be seen at hyundailikesunday.com/2014/08/11/how-a-fuel-cellvehicle-works/.

Answer:
de Havilland Mosquito
The de Havilland Mosquito was a British multi-role combat aircraft with a two-man crew that served during and after WWII. It was one of few operational front-line aircraft of the era constructed almost entirely of wood and was nicknamed “The Wooden Wonder”. When the Mosquito began production in 1941, it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world. By the end of January 1942, contracts had been awarded for Mosquitos of all variants to be built. More than 1,100 were built by De Havilland Canada.
