Starting March 29, 2015, Air France will offer up to five weekly non-stop flights between ParisCharles de Gaulle Airport and Vancouver-YVR. Flights will be operated using Boeing 777200 with 309 seats—35 in Business class, 24 in Premium Economy and 250 in Economy.

Starting November 6, 2014, taxi companies operating out of YVR will implement guaranteed zone fares to destinations in Richmond and Vancouver. All other destinations throughout Metro Vancouver, including inbound trips to YVR, will maintain the metered system.

The newest example of YVR’s commitment to the customer, the new zone fare system provides travellers leaving YVR with guaranteed and reliable set fares for their taxi trip. Taking the guesswork out of travel, zone fares range from $20 to $41

and are based on the existing metered fare to the midpoint of each geographic zone.

“Working closely with the 19 taxi companies who operate at YVR, I am pleased to welcome the new zone fare system for taxi trips leaving the airport,” said Glenn McCoy, senior vice president, finance and chief financial officer, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Our customers told us they wanted dependable rates to reduce uncertainty and to make their travel easier.

definition, seat-back touch screens along with power outlets and USB ports available for all customers.

The Dreamliner fleet for Air Canada will consist of a total of 15 Boeing 787-8 aircraft and 22 of the larger capacity Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

YVR receives Most Valuable Partnership Award from Quest Food Exchange Vancouver Airport Authority was honoured with a Most Valuable Partner Award at the annual Quest Food Exchange award celebration. The Airport Authority is in its 6th year of partnership with Quest Food Exchange.

Quest Food Exchange is a not-for-profit organization that partners with local wholesalers, supermarkets and farmers to provide healthy and affordable food for families and individuals.

Quest uses it own fleet of trucks to sort and distribute the food to those in need in the Lower Mainland.

“We are proud to have donated another $50,000 to help keep Quest’s truck fleet operating,” said Jake Sobrepena, community relations specialist, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Accessibility is highly important to YVR and we are committed to the families in the greater YVR community.

Quest is also the first grocery store in Canada to implement braille signage and audio scanners for the deaf-blind as well as the blind. This exciting project is being launched by Paralympic champion Eddy Morten.

Quest assists individuals each month through partnerships with local social service agencies by providing their clients with

access to its not-for-profit grocery markets and by delivering raw food materials to agencies for its own meal programs.

WestJet considering adding extra row of seats to grow revenues WestJet Airlines is considering adding another row of seats on its planes to drive higher revenues after a new entertainment system is added to its fleet over the next two years.

Chief executive Gregg Saretsky said that passengers will not notice any change in legroom after it installs new slim-line seats equipped with the Wi-Fi system, which give an 2.5-centimetres of legroom.

“The impact on our brand is going to be positive because we’re going to provide more features for our guests... and the opportunity to densify the fleet gives [us] a chance to further reduce our fares,” said Saretsky after reporting the airline’s thirdquarter results on November 4, 2014.

“So everything that we’re doing is with the mindset of how do we keep dropping fares in Canada. We haven’t given up on continuing to scratch away at other ideas to do that without

compromising the brand,” said Saretsky.

About half of WestJet’s mainline fleet will get the new seats in 2015, with the rest in 2016.

WestJet is also considering the addition of new seats on the Q400 turboprops flown by its regional subsidiary, WestJet Encore.

According to Saretsky, if WestJet does add the extra seats, the change will be made on all Boeing 737s, but not on planes flying to vacation destinations.

WestJet currently flies three types of Boeing 737s that seat between 119 and 174 people.

Saretsky said that WestJet would not rule out following Irish-based airline Ryanair’s lead, which plans to fly planes with up to 200 seats.

WestJet expects to add up to $100-million per year in baggage fees, following the October 29, 2014 introduction of the new charges for economy passengers.

YVR deemed to have one of the world’s best airport bike paths Vancouver International Airport (YVR) was recently recognized in a CNN TV report as an airport that possesses one of the world’s best bike paths—an increasingly popular feature at airports around the world.

The CNN report listed YVR as being one of the world’s topfive airport cycling areas, along with Manchester, England; Copenhagen, Denmark; Canary Islands, Spain; and Bangkok, Thailand.

Despite its prominent airport status, YVR has also gained a reputation as having a bike-friendly transportation focus, winning awards from organizations such as HUB, Metro Vancouver’s largest cycling coalition.

The Airport Authority has described itself as “committed” to helping more people

ride to and from its location, completing bike route enhancements along Inglis Drive and the south end of Templeton Street, and adding a connection from the Arthur Laing Bridge to the Templeton Canada Line Station.

Just last fall, the Larry Berg Flight Path Park unveiled a brand new commuter station featuring a bike pump and a repair station for cycling enthusiasts to enjoy.

YVR’s Green Commuter Program has provided incentives for airport employees to cycle to work and added seven kilometres to Sea Island cycling network.

The upgrades have helped make Sea Island a cycling destination for everyone.

APC kiosks now at Denver International Airport

Denver International Airport now has 16 automated passport control (APC) kiosks installed to expedite the customs entry process for international travellers.

Vancouver Airport Authority unveiled 16 BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks to expedite the

customs entry process for international travellers at Denver International Airport (DIA) on October 23, 2014.

Instead of filling out a declaration card and taking travel documents to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, eligible

passengers choosing to use APC can proceed directly to a selfservice kiosk within Denver’s CBP area.

Eligible passengers include all U.S. and Canadian passport holders, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) and returning international travellers with Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) from 38 countries not requiring U.S. entry visas, including Australia, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Travellers follow the onscreen instructions to scan their passport, use the touch screen to answer the customs declaration questions, receive a receipt confirming their information and proceed to baggage claim.

“These new passport kiosks will help to speed customers through the Customs and Border Protection process, greatly improving the international arrival experience for many of our passengers,” said Denver International Airport CEO Kim Day. “In 2013, Denver’s international passenger traffic increased by 13 per cent from the previous year, and with United’s new non-stop flight to Panama City starting in December [2014], this is the perfect time to offer this new amenity, enhancing the customer experience at Denver International Airport.”

Through a competitive bid process, Innovative Travel Solutions—a business unit within Vancouver Airport Authority dedicated to APC development— won the bid to install and maintain BorderXpress APC kiosks at DIA for a contract amount of $868,000 over five years.

Shining light on seasonal affective disorder

Are the grey days of winter beginning to get you down? Weather often affects people’s moods. Sunlight breaking through clouds can lift the spirits, while a dull rainy day may make bring on a feel of gloom. While noticeable, these shifts in mood generally do not affect the ability to cope with daily life.

Some people, however, are vulnerable to a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons. An extreme form of the “winter blues”, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a real medical condition that can affect anyone, even people who are not already predisposed to depression.

In most cases, SAD symptoms appear during late fall or early winter and go away during the sunnier days of spring and summer. However, some people with the opposite pattern have symptoms that begin in spring or summer. In either case, symptoms may start out mild and become more severe as the season progresses.

Symptoms of SAD Take signs and symptoms of seasonal affective disorder seriously. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to problems if it’s not treated.

These can include: • inability to concentrate • sadness or despair • increased appetite, cravings for sweet

and starchy foods, and weight gain (usually occurring in the winter months) • irritability • increased sleepiness • lack of energy • decreased interest in work and social activities • suicidal thoughts or behaviour • substance abuse Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing some or all of the symptoms listed above.

Causes of SAD While the exact cause of SAD remains unknown, some factors that may come into play include: The body’s biological clock (circadian rhythm)—The reduced level of sunlight in fall and winter may cause winter-onset SAD. This decrease in sunlight may disrupt the body’s internal clock and lead to feelings of depression.

Serotonin levels—A drop in serotonin, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) that affects mood, might play a role in SAD. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin that may trigger depression.

Melatonin levels—The change in season can disrupt the balance of the body’s level of melatonin, which plays a role in sleep patterns and mood.

Other factors that may increase the risk of SAD:

Being female—SAD is diagnosed more often in women than in men, but men may have more-severe symptoms.

Age—Young people have a higher risk of winter SAD, and winter SAD is less likely to occur in older adults.

Family history—People with SAD may be more likely to have blood relatives with SAD or another form of depression.

Having clinical depression or bipolar disorder—Symptoms of depression may worsen seasonally if you have one of these conditions.

Living far from the equator—SAD appears to be more common among people who live far north or south of the equator. This may be due to decreased sunlight during the winter and longer days during the summer months.

Treatment There are several forms of treatment currently available. The most effective include a combination of light therapy, medications and complementary therapies.

Light therapy—Daily exposure to bright light (phototherapy) may help balance certain brain chemicals and reset body rhythms. For some people, 30 minutes to two hours of treatment with bright light may be as effective as antidepressant medication.

light boxes, light visors, or light units worn on the head. White fluorescent light is safer than ultraviolet light. It may take two to four weeks before symptoms of SAD are relieved with light therapy. Talk to your doctor before choosing light therapy, as it is not appropriate for everyone.

There are also certain side effects associated with this technique, including eye strain, headaches, nausea and agitation.

Ask your doctor for more information if you’re considering purchasing a light box. Look for one that is CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved and has a filter to block ultraviolet (UV) light, which can be harmful to the eyes.

Medications—Some antidepressant medications may be used to treat more severe cases of SAD. Ask your doctor for more information about medications and potential side effects.

Exercise therapy—Daily physical activity helps people overcome fatigue and depression. Find an outdoor hobby that you can enjoy throughout the winter months such as skating, skiing or walking.

Complementary therapy—Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any herbal products as these medications may interact with prescription or nonprescription drugs (e.g., antidepressants).

Statistics indicate that approximately two to three per cent of the population suffers from SAD. While there’s no known way to prevent its development, taking steps early on to manage symptoms may prevent them from getting worse over time.

Scariest Costume—Trevor Jason as a ‘Scottish Warrior’.

In the spirit of Halloween, ghost, goblins and ghouls haunted the hallways of YVR on October 31—part of the airport’s annual Halloween costume and pumpkin-carving contest.

The contests took place at The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe during the lunch hour and saw crowds cheering on their favourite costumes and carved pumpkins, while DJ Alibaba spun appropriately themed tunes.

Each year, submissions to the pumpkin-carving contest appear to reach even greater creative heights and this year was no exception. The judges had the challenge of choosing Best Overall, Most Original and Scariest Pumpkin carvings from 13 entrants.

The costume contest included 43 entrants who paraded over the YVR Celebrates Halloween stage in a diverse range of costumes. The final decisions by the judges included prizes for Best Overall, Most Original and Scariest Costume, along with two Honourable Mentions.

First-place winners received $300 YVR Bucks, second-place winners received $200 YVR Bucks and thirdplace winners took home $100 YVR Bucks.

A new element was added to this year’s activities. TapSnap, an interactive, green screen photo booth, was visited by more than 200 visitors.

Congratulations to the winners and participants for the extraordinary amount of effort and imagination required to produce their creations and for making Halloween so much fun for the airport community.

New Routes

New and increased seasonal sun destinations from YVR

The Sunwing Airlines fleet consists of 16 Boeing 737-800 aircraft with an average fleet age of 6.6 years.

As the cold weather and rainy days start to settle in on Vancouver, YVR and its airline partners ramp up seasonal service to many sunny destinations to provide travellers with a route to escape the doldrums.

Here are a few new hot spot destinations with departures from YVR: Sunwing Airlines has added a new destination to its route plan, offering service to the Grand

Bahama International Airport (FPO) in Freeport, Bahamas every Thursday (starting this month).

Air Canada rouge will offer service to Palm Springs, California (three times a week starting December 18, 2014) and Phoenix, Arizona (daily, starting December 17, 2014).

These destinations are in addition to the airline’s existing service to Maui, Honolulu and Kona, Hawaii.

Air Transat will resume its annual excursions to sunny places such as San Jose Del Cabo, Punta Cana, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Cancun, and Panama City.

Quest Kodiak touches down in Pitt Meadows before journeying to Ecuador On October 25, Pitt Meadows Airport (YPK) hosted the newest member of the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) global fleet, a brand new Quest Kodiak aircraft.

MAF Canada is a global ministry partnership that serves the aviation needs of more than 35 countries.

MAF purchased the aircraft, thanks to the generous contribution of funds from a B.C. donor.

After having visited select Western Canadian cities, the Quest Kodiak is now bound for service in South America, where it will continue a rich history of mission aviation in Ecuador,

where MAF began service in 1948.

Currently, an aging fleet of five aircraft provide daily mission service to 200 remote Ecuadorian jungle airstrips. With the newest aircraft in Ecuador’s MAF fleet marking its 28th year of service last year, the need

for a new versatile aircraft was paramount for MAF to continue serving in these isolated regions.

The British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) held its annual Silver Wings Awards at the Vancouver Convention Centre West on October 30, 2014.

Some 280 people—BCAC members, guests, award and scholarship winners—from across the province were in attendance, enjoying the networking opportunities, live entertainment, great food and the chance to bid on silent auction items.

The emcee, CBC personality Johanna Wagstaffe, opened the awards by introducing the Honourable Mike de Jong, BC Minister of Finance whose address included a welcome on behalf of the Premier and Province of BC. Award winners received recognition for their varied contributions to the industry with presentation of annual trophies, and aviation students received a number of scholarships to further their aviation studies in fields of pilot training, airport management, and aviation maintenance.

The Mary Swain Memorial, a new scholarship introduced at this year’s event, was awarded to Rachel Lichti. Scholarship sponsor Tony Swain was on hand to meet the recipient.
