Vancouver Airport Authority is once again hosting its annual Holiday Food Hamper Drive in support of Quest Food Exchange.

The Holiday Food Hamper Drive asks YVR businesses, aviation partners, employees and volunteers to donate holiday spirit in the form of a turkey dinner to those who would otherwise miss out.

This year’s goal is to fill 500 YVR hamper bags with turkey stuffing, canned veggies, soup, crackers, instant mashed potatoes, gravy, cookies, cranberry sauce and granola bars. The Airport Authority will match donations by ensuring every hamper has a turkey so that 500 families get a holiday dinner to remember.

Individuals and teams are encouraged to participate in the hamper drive and challenge their colleagues and business partners to do the same.

Navigating autism at YVR More than 40 families living with autism recently had the unique opportunity to participate in the first annual YVR Accessibility Tour for Autism at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Vancouver Airport Authority, in partnership with Canucks Autism Network (CAN), Air Transat and Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority (CATSA), hosted a pre-flight boarding rehearsal to practice arriving at the airport, checking in, going through security and boarding the aircraft, without actually taking flight, for those families.

The unique program is designed to help children and families living with autism navigate the obstacles of travelling. The program includes resources such as videos, stuffed animals and

social stories and is designed to decrease anxiety by making the travel experience more predictable and familiar.

Vancouver International Airport is home to incredible works of art, historical anecdotes and unique architecture.

The Airport Authority offers a number of different tours tailored to groups and individuals to explore YVR either on their own, or as a collective with a tour guide. For the last three years, Vancouver Airport Authority has also partnered with Spinal Cord Injury BC (SCI BC) to provide similar tours for people new to wheelchairs.

Vancouver Airport Authority welcomed Air Canada rouge’s new year-round non-stop service between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Honolulu on November 21, 2014.

As part of the celebration, departing passengers were offered a quick taste of Honolulu that included Hawaiian food and musical entertainment featuring ukuleles, drums and dancing.

Throughout the year, Quest Food Exchange collects and

distributes overstocked, mislabelled or near-expiry products that would otherwise go to waste and diverts that food to people who need it.

Operating three low-cost grocery stores in the Lower Mainland, Quest offers food to 400 social service agencies and their clients for a fraction of the retail cost. The goal? To reduce

hunger with dignity, build community and foster sustainability.

Since 2011, more than $250,000 in cash and food have been donated to Quest by the Airport Authority and YVR businesses such as HMS Host and the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, including $180,000 donated by the Airport Authority to purchase three new refrigerated

trucks to facilitate thousands of food pick-ups and drop-offs.

YVR named ‘least frustrating’ airport

by Bloomberg

YVR has been named the least frustrating airport for travellers in North America, according to Bloomberg’s Airport Frustration Index.

Bloomberg’s rankings are based on, on-time departures and arrivals, travel time to downtown and back, washrooms, security lines and shopping amenities.

Overall, YVR received the lowest (best) Frustration Index score (17.6 out of 100).

Four other Canadian airports also made the list: Calgary

International Airport was ranked 4th, Ottawa International Airport was ranked 8th, Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport was ranked 20th and Toronto Pearson International Airport was ranked 30th.

YVR was also recently voted one of the best airports to sleep in, one of the world’s best airport bike paths, and Skytrax awarded YVR with Best Airport in North America and Best Airport in the World for its size category of 10 to 20-million passengers.

The 23rd annual YVR for Kids golf tournament and gala dinner event took place at Quilchena Golf & Country Club and the Sheraton Airport Hotel, respectively, on August 21, 2014.

The 144 morning golfers were treated to a dramatic ball drop, with one of the Richmond Fire Department’s ladder trucks dropping hundreds of balls onto one of the putting areas.

As always, there was a prize for the golfer that hit a shot closest to the pin—the lucky winner being awarded two Air Canada tickets to Hawaii.

Following the golf tournament, close to 400 guests attended the evening gala dinner and auction event at The Sheraton

Airport Hotel. The latter’s ballroom sported hundreds of poppies in honour of special guest Poppy, the Canuck Place therapy dog. Guests lined up to have a picture taken with Poppy, and there was hardly a dry eye to be seen after her handler spoke about Poppy’s role at Canuck Place.

Thanks to the generous support of sponsors and donors, the evening gala also included more than 300 silent and live auction

items for attendees to place their bids.

Local charities such as Canuck Place, Air Canada Dreams Take Flight, Rubina Hope for Kids, Hope Air and Richmond Christmas Fund will benefit from the more than $250,000 raised at this year’s event.

Since its inception in 1991, YVR for Kids has raised close to $4-million for children’s charities.

Aircraft tires do not typically have a definitive lifespan.

Variables such as weather, hard landings, cross-wind landings, anti-skid action and rough or damaged runway surfaces all have an effect on the condition of the rubber surrounding the tire’s core.

Recapped or retreaded tires is standard procedure in aviation and regarded as being the most economical and safe method for

maintaining landing gear function.

Some recapped tires will last for up to 100 landings, while others will need replacement far sooner.

The tires on an A380 jet will last for approximately 300 landings, which is approximately six months of operations. There are 22 tires on an A380, four more than a Boeing 747 and eight more than the Boeing 777.

BorderXpress kiosks go international to Aruba

Aruba’s white sandy beaches and warm, sunny weather are just a few of the reasons why more than one-million tourists visit the island each year.

Queen Beatrix International Airport on the stunning Caribbean island of Aruba has ordered 10 APC BorderXpress kiosks from YVR’s Innovative Travel Solutions team.

This marks the first time that APC technology has been available to travellers at an international airport with U.S. pre-clearance.

YVR’s BorderXpress kiosks are expected to dramatically reduce wait times and improve the departure experience for passengers leaving this Caribbean locale for U.S. destinations.

Aruba International will say bon bini—“Welcome” in local parlance—to the kiosks this month.

More and more passengers are heeding the call of Aruba’s powder white beaches and laidback vibe. In fact, passenger traffic to the island airport jumped 8.3 per cent in 2013.

With its stunning sculpture park, art collection, world-class shopping and dining, Queen Beatrix International Airport offers a superb first and last impression of the self-described “happy island”—one that can only improve as APC kiosks

speed up the border clearance process.

This order for Border Xpress kiosks is a big win for YVR’s Innovative Travel Solutions team as it shares its technology and expertise at pre-clearance airports abroad.

In October, 2014 Denver International Airport unveiled 16 YVR-developed BorderXpress kiosks to expedite the customs entry process for international travellers. More announcements about YVR’s BorderXpress kiosks will be forthcoming in the months to come.

Travelling through YVR this holiday season? Follow these tips to keep your spirits bright, from check-in to takeoff.

Most airlines allow check-in up to 24 hours in advance of your flight. While you’re online selecting seats, book your airport parking while you’re at it. jetSet offers the lowest on-airport parking rates when you book online at YVR.ca. Follow the bright orange roadway signs to reach the lot.

From there, a comfortable, complimentary 24-hour shuttle whisks you and your bags to the terminals in as little as five minutes.

Don’t put wrapped gifts in your checked luggage. They may be opened during the security screening process. Luckily, you can pick up a few last-minute stocking stuffers at YVR and have them beribboned at complimentary gift-wrapping stations located after security in C-Pier, U.S. Departures and International Departures. Stations are open 9am to 3pm from December 12 to 24.

Leave a little extra time to make your way through the airport arrival, check-in, bag-drop, security screening and customs

processes—particularly if you’re travelling with kids or en masse.

While the Airport Authority’s team is working hard to get you through the airport quickly and pleasantly, some congestion is inevitable, especially on the busy travel days leading up to Christmas.

The holiday coat check service is back again—particularly helpful if you’re heading to a warm-weather climate and don’t want to lug along a bulky downcoat. Offered by CDS Baggage Storag, which is located on Level 2 of the Domestic and International terminals, coats can be stored for $1 per coat per day, or $5 per coat per week.

Children’s play areas are just waiting to be climbed and clambered—by children, that is—while waiting to board.

Meanwhile, tired parents can sip an eggnog latte while supervising from a comfy seat in the gate area.

If you or a loved one requires a little extra assistance travelling through the airport, YVR’s Airport Butler can help. Simple

services, such as check-in assistance, golf cart transportation to the gate, access to a pay-per-use lounge or even help with airport shopping and dining options can make a big difference.

And keep an eye out for Santa Claus and an ear open for local musicians who will be spreading cheer throughout the public areas of the terminal.

Did You Know?

The official birth date of YVR is July 22, 1931, with the first scheduled passenger service for flights between Vancouver and Seattle on Alaska Washington Airways occurring in 1932.

But it wasn’t until 15 years later with the addition of regular scheduled international air service that YVR was officially designated Vancouver International Airport.

Air Canada expands use of Dreamliners to more Asia routes from Vancouver

B.C.-based airline Hawkair has introduced a new Ultra Econo Fare class on its flights.

The Ultra Econo Fare is the airline’s lowest fare offered and is completely unbundled, allowing passengers the choice of paying for only what they need. The Ultra Econo Fare includes all fees, taxes and surcharges. Tickets booked under this fare are non-refundable and incur a fee for flight cancellation, bags and any changes to the booking.

Hawkair’s Ultra Econo Fare is in addition to the airline’s Vale and Flex fares, which offer the benefit of a free first checked bag, lower change fees and other benefits.

Why did Hawkair introduce the Ultra Econo fare?

“The short answer is we

respect our guests,” said Jay Dilley, president of Hawkair. “In everything we do, we believe in helping people.

“The longer answer is we introduced this new fare class to give true options and to build on our trust and transparency. We’re not changing or hiding anything; we’re giving you the power, we lowered our prices for the simple reason that we wanted the advantage of our guests’ choices to reflect in their pockets, not ours,” said Dilley.

The Ultra Econo Fare is Hawkair’s lowest offered and needs to be booked early because of limited availability.

Air Canada Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Air Canada will expand the introduction of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring the airline’s new International Business Class and Premium Economy seating, to more of its routes to Asia from Vancouver.

This will include flights to Beijing, China in February 2015 and Seoul, Korea in March 2015.

Air Canada converted its Vancouver-Shanghai route to 787 Dreamliner service in October 2014, followed by its VancouverTokyo/Narita route last month.

Air Canada’s Boeing 787-8

Dreamliner aircraft feature three cabins of service, International Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy, offering comfortable ergonomic seating and enhanced definition intuitive touch personal entertainment screens.

The fuel efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliners opens up opportunities for Air Canada to serve new international destinations and convert existing routes to Dreamliner service as the airline replaces existing Boeing 767 aircraft with the new Boeing 787

fleet.

Air Canada will take delivery of six Boeing 787 aircraft by the end of 2014, with all 37 aircraft scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2019.

The carrier’s Dreamliner fleet will consist of a total of 15 787-8 aircraft and 22 of the larger capacity 787-9 aircraft.

As Air Canada takes delivery of new widebody aircraft for its mainline fleet, current Boeing 767 aircraft will be transferred to its leisure carrier subsidiary, Air Canada rouge.

Air Transat gets high marks for environmental performance Atmosfair, a German climate protection organization, has ranked Air Transat as the most climate-efficient airline in North America for 2014.

Established in 2004, the atmosfair Airline Index (AAI) compares and ranks the carbon efficiency of 193 airlines worldwide.

The formula used in the index contains information for every flight, aircraft type, engines, winglets, seating and freight capacity of an airline, as well as load factors for both passengers and coloaded freight.

Using detailed sources from authorities and official statistics,

specialized data service providers and computer models used by aircraft engineers, the CO2 emissions of the airline can be calculated at an error margin of less than two per cent.

Air Transat was the only North American carrier to appear in atmosfair’s global top 10 airlines of 2014. In addition, out of 125 international airlines Air Transat ranked fourth in the longhaul category and seventh on the global scorecard.

Air Canada and Air China form strategic alliance

Air Canada and Air China have formed a revenue sharing joint venture partnership on routes between Canada and China to stimulate traffic growth between the two countries.

The joint venture is

expected to generate additional service and pricing benefits for consumers travelling between the two countries, as well as provide for additional cooperation between the two carriers in the areas of sales, marketing and airport operations.

Subject to Air Canada and Air China making the necessary filings, obtaining competition and other regulatory approvals and finalizing documentation, the joint venture is expected to come into effect by the end of 2015.

Currently, Air China offers its customers codeshare flights operated by Air Canada between Vancouver and six Canadian cities (Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal).

The airline operates up to 11 flights per week between Vancouver and Beijing.

Air Canada operates up to a total of 28 flights per week between Canada and China, from Vancouver and Toronto to and from Beijing

and Shanghai. The carrier offers its customers codeshare flights operated by Air China between Beijing and six cities in China— Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Shenyang, Wuhan and Xi’an.

Airline route additions and changes at YVR Air Canada modifies Vancouver-Beijing operations From February 1, 2015 to February 15, 2015, Air Canada’s plans to provide Boeing 787 Dreamliner service on a daily basis from Vancouver to Beijing.

Less hours of daylight, flu and colds, snow and icy conditions all create hazards that make walking and working outdoors a challenge. However, there are a number of ways to keep healthy, happy and active during the colder months.

Let it snow While Vancouver is known for its temperate climate, there are occasions when a snowfall means sidewalks and driveways have to be cleared of the white stuff. When and if that necessity occurs, remember the following tips: Always wear a hat, gloves or mitts, and waterproof boots when shovelling. Cover your face, especially if you have blood pressure problems.

Pace yourself, especially if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or back problems.

Avoid doing all the shovelling at once. Frequent shovelling prevents snow pileup, overexertion and the necessity to stay out in

the cold for prolonged periods.

Before going out in the cold, warm up by doing back- and side-bending exercises and drink water before and after shovelling.

Try not to lift a large shovelful of snow. Instead, using a lightweight, pusher-type shovel, bend the knees and hold the shovel close while pushing the snow to the side. This will help reduce twisting or turning movements that could cause back injury.

Rest when tired. Stop shovelling if chest or back pain occurs.

Heart attacks have been known to occur when heavy lifting is performed in cold weather.

Don’t get stuck Dread winter driving? Being prepared is the key.

Have a garage perform a tune-up and inspection. Make sure that the vehicle’s brakes work well to prevent skidding.

Cooling and electrical systems must be in good working condition. Put fresh anti-freeze in and make sure that all electrical connections are clean and tight, especially if the car’s battery is getting old. Remember, cold weather is hard on batteries.

Don’t neglect the exhaust system. To avoid carbon monoxide leaks when the windows are closed check the muffler and tail pipe system. Heaters, defrosters and wipers should be in good working condition to keep the windshield clean for good road visibility.

To increase traction in soft snow consider investing in snow tires and regularly check tire pressure.

Keep a full gas tank at all times, as it will help reduce condensation and prevent the gas line from freezing.

Winter skin care While seasons change, one thing remains constant—the sun.

No matter the season, sunscreen is needed to protect the skin against harmful ultraviolet rays.

Wear makeup or a moisturizer with sun protection factor (SPF) 15 on the face and all exposed areas of skin throughout the winter. If participating in winter sports, apply sunscreen with high SPF. The sunlight-reflecting quality of snow can cause severe sunburn from a day on the slopes.

While a hot shower feels wonderful after being out in the cold, it can have a drying effect, depleting natural oils from the skin. Stick to short, warm showers instead. Pat dry, and while the skin is still slightly damp, apply a moisturizer. For super-dry areas such as hands, elbows, knees and heels, use an extra-strength moisturizer formulated especially for dry skin.

Take special care of sensitive skin. Exfoliating scrubs and products that contain alphahydroxy acids may worsen already dry and irritated skin.

If suffering from a severely dry skin, eczema or “winter itch,” ask the pharmacist for a cream that is urea-based, or consult a doctor about possible treatment options.

And, to help keep your skin from drying out, consider a humidifier to maintain adequate indoor air humidity.

Following these tips throughout the winter months can help keep skin from the chapping, cracking and irritation that winter weather, dry air and wind can cause.

Canada’s reformed Caregiver Program The Government of Canada has made significant reforms to what was previously known as the Live-In Caregiver Program and which is now called the Caregiver Program.

The Caregiver Program has been a feature of Canada’s immigration system for many years as a component of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. It allows Canadian employers to recruit foreign nationals to live and work in their homes to provide childcare or home support for seniors or people with disabilities, when there is a shortage of Canadians or permanent residents to fill available positions.

After two years of work, caregivers have the option of applying for permanent residency.

Changes to the program

include ending the requirement that caregivers reside with their employer and providing eligible caregivers with two pathways that will lead to permanent residence status within six months.

To be eligible for either pathway, caregivers must have the following: • A positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from an employer in Canada • A written contract with the future employer, signed by both caregiver and employer • Successful completion of the equivalent of at least one year Canadian post-secondary school education that is confirmed by an Educational Credential Assessment • At least six months approved training or one year of fulltime paid work experience

Boeing conducts world’s first flight using green diesel Boeing has completed the world’s first flight using green diesel, a sustainable biofuel that is widely available and used in ground transportation.

Green diesel is chemically distinct and different than biodiesel, which also is used in ground transportation.

Sustainable green diesel is made from vegetable oils, waste cooking oil and waste animal fats. Boeing previously found that this fuel is chemically similar to HEFA (hydro-processed esters and fatty acids) aviation biofuel approved in 2011.

Boeing powered its ecoDemonstrator 787 flight test airplane with a blend of 15 per cent green diesel and 85 per cent petroleum jet fuel in the left engine.

“Green diesel offers a tremendous opportunity to make sustainable aviation biofuel more available and more affordable for our customers,” said Julie Felgar, managing director of environmental strategy and integration, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“We will provide data from several ecoDemonstrator flights to support efforts to approve this fuel for commercial aviation and

With a wholesale cost of $1.26 per litre inclusive of U.S. government incentives, green diesel approaches price parity with petroleum jet fuel.

“The airplane performed as designed with the green diesel blend, just as it does with conventional jet fuel,” said Capt.

see in flight tests with a new type of fuel.”

Green diesel is among more than 25 new technologies being tested by Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator Program aboard 787 Dreamliner ZA004. The program accelerates the testing, refinement and use of new technologies and methods that can improve aviation’s environmental performance.

According to Finland-based Neste Oil, which supplied green diesel for the ecoDemonstrator 787 flight, on a lifecycle basis sustainably produced green diesel reduces carbon emissions by 50 to 90 per cent compared to fossil fuel.

Airbus encourages young women to pursue aviation careers Airbus continued its policy of encouraging young women to consider studying aeronautics by recently welcoming secondary school students to its Toulouse site for a day, giving them the opportunity to meet Airbus employees and learn more about the different professions in the aeronautical industry.

The goal of the Airbus’ program, “Elles du Futur - Girls for the Future of Aeronautics”, an initiative launched by Airbus in

2011, is to help make the aeronautical industry’s professions better known and encourage young girls to consider pursuing a career in the aeronautics industry.

After a presentation about Airbus and its professions, the students visit an Airbus aircraft final assembly line and meet female Airbus employees from a broad range of academic backgrounds to discuss their career paths and professions.

This is the third consecutive

year that these awareness-raising actions have been carried out by Airbus.

These initiatives are in line with Airbus’ gender diversity policy, which aims to feminise these traditionally male professions. The diversity policy concerns all the Airbus entities worldwide and focuses on four major aspects: gender mix, intergenerational diversity, cultural and social diversity, as well as disabilities.

Richmond makes major strides toward sustainability The City of Richmond has taken significant steps toward its goal of being a sustainable community, with initiatives ranging from aggressive energy conservation to substantial increases in child care spaces and affordable housing.

The City’s achievements are highlighted in a new Sustainability Progress Report, which describes focus areas; provides an overview of the city’s initiatives that contribute to Richmond’s sustainable development; and notes key sustainability-related targets.

Some of the achievements highlighted in the report include: Richmond’s energy management program has saved the city’s facilities approximately 28.4-gigawatts of energy and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 5,000 tonnes since 2007—the equivalents of taking 1,500 cars off the road for a year.

Richmond is doubling the number of child care spaces offered in city-owned facilities. City-owned facilities currently offer 195 licensed child care spaces. Five additional child care facilities have been negotiated and when completed will add more than 200 more licensed spaces to the city’s inventory. Richmond has also secured more than 450 units of new subsidized housing through its Affordable Housing Strategy.

The city adopted its Resilient Economy Strategy in 2014, a strategic-level blueprint for its economic development efforts in the coming years. An Employment Lands Strategy was completed to ensure Richmond has lands available to support a projected one-third increase in local jobs by 2041.

More than $45-million has been invested in Richmond flood protection initiatives since 2008. To address global warming, the City has developed further plans to accommodate up to one metre of sea level rise by 2100.

Creation of a more vibrant community is being supported by investing in recreation assets, such as the City Centre Community Centre and Minoru Recreation Complex, which will include a new older adult centre, new aquatic centre and sport, recreation and fitness programming and support amenities.

Over the past three decades, Richmond has almost halved the total volumes of waste sent to the landfill, and increased recycling. In 2013, the City achieved 70 per cent diversion from landfills of waste from single-family homes, an increase of nine per cent beyond 2012 levels.
