Registration for the annual YVR Explorer Tour opens on January 1, 2015.

Vancouver Airport Authority recently celebrated Air Canada rouge new seasonal non-stop service between Vancouver and Palm Springs on December 18, 2014.

The new service to Palm Springs will operate three times weekly until April 12, 2015, offering British Columbians a sunny escape during the cold Canadian winters.

“We are excited that Air Canada rouge has introduced these new routes for the upcoming busy winter months,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “YVR is always looking to provide more flexibility and choice in our services and

As part of the welcoming, the Airport Authority took this opportunity to host a gate celebration for departing passengers, which included a round of golf on a Nintendo Wii, classic sunny tunes by DJ Alibaba and Palm Springs-themed décor.

Passengers also snacked on mini club sandwiches, white chocolate rum golf balls from the wheat grass green, palm tree sugar cookie, fruit wedges and blood orange fizzle punch.

5. New Baggage Carts Sporting a sleek, upright, ergonomic design, YVR successfully rolled out 3,000 brand new baggage carts in 2014, with a little help from a tongue-incheek video on YouTube. The video received more than 100 likes and 35,000 views With YVR starting 2015 with new service from Qantas to Sydney, Australia, new Air Canada rouge Palm Springs, California service and upcoming new Air France service to Paris in March 2015, all indications are that Canada’s second busiest airport will have another banner year.

25 years a Green Coat volunteer at YVR

Doug Franklin (centre) was honoured for his 25 years of service as a YVR Green Coat and his contributions as an ambassador to the Lower Mainland and Canada at Vancouver International Airport.

Doug Franklin has been a Green Coat volunteer at YVR since the beginning of the volunteer program. For 25 years, he has been extending his warm welcomes and provided helpful directions to customers.

We recently sat down with Franklin and this is what he had to say about the Green Coat program and his volunteerism.

What made you want to become a Green Coat?

I grew up at 41st and Dunbar in the days of propeller driven aircraft, and I would hear them warming up. I used to hop on my bike and come down here and lean on the fence and watch all the planes coming and going.

I’ve always found an airport a fascinating place to be. Also, I’m proud to be a Canadian, I’m proud to be a British Columbian, and proud to live in the Lower Mainland. I want people to think well of this part of the world and if I’m able to contribute to that, that’s great!

Who are some of the amazing people you’ve worked with in your time as a Green Coat?

One of the most outstanding people is Frank O’Neill, who was the GM of the airport at the time and he’s the one who got the program going. As far as I’m

concerned he’s just an incredible man. He persevered and made sure the Green Coat program got going and as a result there are Green Coat-like programs at all sorts of airports all over North America. And the Green Coats themselves are just an extraordinary bunch of people. I think they are all basically motivated because they like helping people.

Why is it something you continue to do after all these years? It certainly isn’t the pay!

I’ve done a lot of volunteering in my life, but nothing has given me the satisfaction that I’ve had in being a Green Coat. I will tell anybody who will listen that I don’t come to work, I come to fun.

What makes the Green Coat program so special?

I think we are truly unique.

I think we have an incredible

group of people and I think YVR has really put some effort in to supporting the Green Coat program because they realize how valuable it is.

What is one piece of advice you would give somebody who was just starting out as a Green Coat?

Find out where the nearest washroom is, because you’ll get asked that a lot! And also, don’t be afraid to say, ‘I don’t know’.

And then say, ‘but we’re going to find out for you.’ And enjoy yourself. There’s never been a day when I went home and said to myself I wish I hadn’t gone.

At a banquet held in his honour, Vancouver Airport Authority acknowledged Franklin’s 25 years of volunteer service, his contributions to the reputation of YVR and his work as an ambassador to the Lower Mainland and Canada.

YVR looks forward to 2015 Never content to rest on its laurels and achievements, Vancouver Airport Authority has big plans for YVR in 2015.

One of these is the development of a luxury designer outlet centre on YVR land in partnership with London-based developer McArthurGlen Group, Europe’s leading owner, developer and manager of designer outlets.

The McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport will feature European and North American luxury, designer and lifestyle brands.

Phase One is scheduled to open with 100 stores this spring.

Highlights of the outlet • Increase the region’s destination appeal for visitors and travellers • Creation of an estimated 1,000 jobs • Options for shoppers to help keep local dollars within the community • Public and entertainment

Round One of Airbus’ global competition Fly Your Ideas has attracted worldwide entries on how the next generation will tackle the future challenges of aviation.

More than 50 Airbus experts

and innovators are reviewing the more than 500 ideas submitted.

Their mission is to select the 100 teams that merit a place in Round Two of the competition.

Whether selected for the next round or not, Airbus will give

feedback to every team on the submission by its members, thus nurturing the spirit of innovation in the next generation.

The 100 selected teams will be announced later this month.

Lufthansa Group to refuel with biokerosene at Oslo Airport

Lufthansa Group will be fuelling its aircraft at Norway’s Oslo Airport with a biokerosene mixture obtained from Norwegian oil company Statoil Aviation.

Starting March 2015, Statoil will feed 2.5-million gallons of sustainably produced, certified biofuel into the tanks at Oslo airport for one year. The approximately 5,000 flights Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Germanwings and Brussels Airlines) operates from the Norwegian capital will then be flying on this biokerosene mixture.

Oslo Airport is the world’s first large commercial airport to offer continuous provision of biofuel over a long period and to fuel

aircraft with biokerosene directly from its hydrant system.

In 2011, Lufthansa was the first airline in the world to run regular flight operations with a biokerosene mixture by operating an Airbus A321 between Frankfurt and Hamburg for half a year as part of the test project. The A321 flew eight-daily flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt from July 15 to Dec. 27, 2011.

One engine was powered by a 50/50 blend of biofuel and conventional fuel.

The long-term testing was accompanied by detailed emission measurements and research into production processes and biomass availability.

New Dreamliners provide Air New Zealand with network flexibility

The first 787-9 in service operated by launch customer Air New Zealand.

Boeing and Air New Zealand have finalized an order for two additional 787-9 Dreamliners, valued at $514-million at current list prices. The order, booked in 2014, came six months after Air New Zealand celebrated the first 787-9 delivery in July, 2014.

Air New Zealand was the launch customer of the 787-9 and currently operates three of the

aircraft in its fleet.

“The entry into service program has gone very smoothly and we’ve been incredibly pleased with the aircraft’s performance,” said Christopher Luxon, chief executive officer, Air New Zealand. “These new 787-9 Dreamliners will provide us with additional flexibility as we move forward with our growth plans.”

This order will eventually increase the airline’s fleet to a total of 12 787-9s, which will operate alongside 15 777200ERs (Extended Range) and 777-300ERs. “Air New Zealand was the first airline in the world to take delivery of a 787-9 and one of the first to recognize the synergies of operating both the 787 and

777,” said Dinesh Keskar, senior vice president, Asia Pacific and India Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The order shows their confidence in our long-haul products.”

The 787-9 complements and extends Boeing’s 787 aircraft family, offering airlines the ability to grow routes opened with the 787-8. With its fuselage stretched by six metres, the 787-9 can fly up to 40 more passengers an additional 830 kilometres, using 20 per cent less fuel and 20 per cent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

To date, 58 customers around the world have ordered 1,071 Boeing 787s.

Boeing achieves milestone year in 2014

Boeing employees helped the company set a record for the most commercial airplanes delivered in a single year, 723 in 2014, breaking the company record for a second consecutive year.

The company’s sales team also booked 1,432 net orders, carrying a value of $232.7-billion at list prices, breaking the previous all-time high set in 2007.

The interline partnership agreement between WestJet and Condor Airlines has been now expanded to offer customers connecting flights to 29 additional destinations in Canada.

Beginning in early May 2015, Condor passengers will have the option of flying to Germany and beyond, via Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Halifax and Whitehorse, with

WestJet connecting from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon.

WestJet and Delta Air Lines, which have been code-share partners since 2012, have now formed a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement.

The agreement allows WestJet Rewards members to earn WestJet dollars on flights marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines, with access to Delta’s extensive global network of more than 300 destinations on six continents.

In addition to the new accrual agreement, WestJet now also offers WestJet Rewards members the ability to use WestJet dollars on all code-share flights marketed by WestJet and operated

by Delta.

The two airlines will continue to work together to expand their relationship even further, including the introduction of full reciprocal redemption in 2015 that will allow members to redeem for destinations beyond WestJet’s current network.

Are you resolved to keep your health and weight-loss New Year’s resolutions?

Each year, between 40 and 50 per cent of people make New Year’s resolutions, with weight loss ranked as the most popular resolution.

The good news is that people who make resolutions are more than 10 times likely to keep them as those who don’t follow this annual tradition.

The bad news is that only a small fraction of people keep this or any other of their resolutions.

According to research from the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, just eight per cent of people achieve their New Year’s goals. Even more disheartening is the fact that 30 per cent of all New Year’s resolutions are broken before February, according to a poll by time management firm Franklin Covey.

If your New Year’s resolution includes healthier lifestyle habits and weight loss, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are some tips to help you keep on track.

Fad diets do not work in the long run. Essentially, the only thing that does work is a change in eating and exercise patterns.

Permanent lifestyle changes are

the only thing that will guarantee weight loss maintenance.

A basic, healthy diet should include at least three nutritious meals a day and one or two snacks. A well-balanced diet is made up of carbohydrate-rich foods, protein, and some—but not too much—fat.

No foods have to be completely eliminated from a balanced diet. High-fat, high-sweet foods can still be enjoyed in moderation. Healthy living is not about denial and deprivation, but about balance.

Health Canada’s Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide is a good reference for balanced eating.

If a weight-loss program is being followed, it should: • recommend gradual weight loss (no more than half to one kilograms per week) • follow Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide • recommend a safe exercise program If you decide to change the way you eat, start by taking the same food plan you have now and make some adjustments, for example reducing some of the fatty foods and eating smaller portions (about 20 per cent

smaller). Increasing the amount of vegetables, fruits, and fibre in the diet is also helpful.

Healthy living also involves keeping active. Keeping active helps to keep the body’s metabolism—the rate at which the body burns calories—higher.

Since muscle burn calories faster than fat, there are even greater benefits if muscle toning/ building exercises are included in an exercise program.

Regular exercise will also help increase energy and confidence. Try to find a form of exercise you enjoy and check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Here are some useful tips for healthy living: • Don’t diet - adopt healthy eating habits.

• Accept your body. Focus on measures of success other than weight. These measures can include having more energy, feeling more confident, having a lower stress level and sleeping better.

• Make gradual changes, not drastic ones.

• Start your day with a nutritious breakfast. People who skip breakfast actually eat more during the day than

those who eat a good breakfast.

• Try to eat something every three to six hours. If you leave it too long, it could lead to overeating.

• Take your time eating. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for a “full” signal to reach your brain.

• Do not do other activities while you are eating. This can distract you from your internal “full” cues and may result in overeating.

• Try to understand how emotions and feelings affect what you eat and when you eat.

• Eat more fruits, vegetables and fibre.

• Don’t be fooled by low-fat foods. Although they contain less fat, manufacturers usually add more sugar to make up for taste lost when fat is removed.

If by mid-February, you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution, don’t despair. Start again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

Vancouver Airport Authority recently welcomed Qantas new two-week non-stop service between Vancouver and Sydney on January 3, 2014.

The new service to Australia will operate six direct return flights, taking advantage of the seasonal peak in travel during the winter season.

“We are delighted that Qantas is looking at our North American market and giving passengers a great product and experience along this route,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This supplementary product will boost tourism and business and provide more choice for Canadians looking to escape the winter

Qantas is operating these flights until January 22, 2015, using a Boeing 747 with a three-cabin configuration for its new non-stop service.

Flights depart from Sydney, Australia on Saturdays and Wednesdays at 2:30pm, arriving Vancouver at 9:45am.

Flights leave Vancouver on Sundays and Thursdays at 11:45pm, arriving Sydney, Australia at 10:25am (+2days).

Qantas recently announced a codeshare with WestJet, providing new connections from its Trans-Pacific services to an expanded network across Canada.

“This new codeshare arrangement reinforces our position as the carrier of choice for both business and leisure travellers to the Americas, offering seamless one-stop travel options from Australia to destinations across Canada,” said Stephen Thompson, executive manager international sales, Qantas.

Travel Talk Top travel destinations for 2015 One of the largest travel networks in the world, American Express, has revealed the top travel trends and destinations to which travellers are planning on heading in 2015.

Insights were gathered from a survey of more than 200 American Express travel counsellors throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Among the travel experts surveyed, 86 per cent noted customers are planning on spending the same or more on travel as they did in 2014, and many are looking for enriched experiences—splurging on upgrades, in-trip experiences and trips with longer durations.

More and more customers are also planning to vacation with their family next year, with 23 per cent of those surveyed planning to travel with their immediate family in 2015.

Trending Destinations for 2015 Based on where American Express travel services customers are booking travel in the New Year, it is clear travellers want to go farther in 2015.

Travel Talk CTC and Korea Tourism Organization sign MOU Last month, the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Tourism Organization at CTC’s Vancouver headquarters.

The MOU is designed to broaden and deepen mutual understanding, as well as strengthen co-operation between the two countries in the tourism marketplace. It comes on the heels of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in fall 2014.

“The intent of the agreement is to further enhance Canada’s long-time relationship to the South Korea market in light of our trade interests there,” said Jon Mamela, CTC’s chief marketing officer. “We’re confident that boosting tourism and sharing knowledge can only increase trade for both countries.”

Other key areas of the agreement will be an exchange of ideas around handling international events, product development, shared market intelligence and consumer trends.

Canada Jetlines, which plans to launch a low-cost carrier in mid-2015, has signed a purchase agreement with Boeing for up to 21 B737 Max aircraft.

According to Jetlines, the deal includes five firm orders, along with purchase rights for an additional 16 aircraft.

Delivery of the aircraft is to begin in 2021, said the Vancouver-based company.

“This Agreement with Boeing is a major milestone for Jetlines,” said Jim Scott, CEO of Jetlines.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Boeing. The Agreement provides Jetlines access to leading edge aircraft technology in the future.”

Vancouver-based Jetlines plans to operate as an ultra lowcost airline, stimulating passenger demand through competitive airfares and generating revenue from the sale of ancillary products and services onboard its

aircraft.

“Boeing is proud to partner with Jetlines as it begins a journey to offer low airfares to passengers across Canada,” said Brad McMullen, vice president of North America Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 737 MAX 7 is perfectly suited to the airline’s needs and we appreciate the confidence Jetlines has in the airplane.”

The Boeing 737 MAX brings advanced engine technologies to build on the strengths of the Next-Generation 737. According to Boeing, airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 14 per cent fuel-use improvement over today’s most fuel-efficient singleaisle airplanes.

Jetlines intends to select routes which avoid direct competition with existing carriers in Canada and focus on cost discipline in order to keep operating costs low.

Cargo Government bans shipments of lithium metal batteries on passenger flights Canada’s Minister of Transport, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, has announced amendments to Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR), which includes a ban on transporting lithium metal batteries as cargo on passenger flights in Canada.

The prohibition, which came into effect on January 1, 2015,

complies with the ICAO ban. It applies to all shipments of lithium metal batteries as cargo on passenger planes within Canada.

It does not apply to batteries already contained in or packed with equipment, but only to those packaged and shipped separately.

The City of Richmond’s Geo-Quest program is the first official GeoTour of a Canadian city and now joins ranks with Parks Canada, the Kennedy Space Centre, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and other high-profile destinations around the world.

Geocaching is a modern outdoor treasure hunt using a personal Smartphone or GPS device to locate hidden containers called “geocaches”. Open to everyone, the City of Richmond’s program is a series of 30 hidden geocaches found in Richmond parks, on trails and at community facilities. If you find all of the caches and

complete the passport, there’s even a prize to be won.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for global visitors along with locals and families to discover Richmond while searching for treasures,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Searching will likely take participants to outdoor areas of Richmond many have never seen before.”

Geocaching is practiced worldwide by over six-million people and has 2.5-million hidden geocaches.

Richmond to welcome, celebrate and share the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay The spirit of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games is coming to Richmond, a community known for its love of sport. The torch will visit Richmond and the community will choose a torchbearer to carry the Pan Am flame.

Three-thousand torchbearers will proudly carry the flame and share its welcoming Pan Am spirit on its 41-day journey towards the lighting of the cauldron on July 10, 2015, to officially open the Games.

The highly-anticipated relay begins in

May 2015 with a traditional Aztec lighting ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico. The Canadian journey for the flame starts with its arrival in Toronto on May 30, 2015.

The national event will be fuelled by local hometown pride, with celebrations planned in five cities outside of Ontario: Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax and Richmond. The torch will also visit more than 130 Ontario communities.
