The A-B Connector provides improved passenger navigation and flow, increased gate capacity and hold room space, new security and safety enhancements and seismic upgrades to ensure a more comfortable and efficient experience. In addition, an expedited

The Marshall Retail Group selected YVR for its first Canadian flagship operation and will operate four stores: Flight Stop, Marshall Rousso, Lick and Tumi. Other concession offerings include ICE Currency Exchange, Green Bean Café and Carl’s Jr. Vino Volo and Famous Famiglia will open later in 2015. YVR’s award-winning sense of place is visible throughout the

A-B Connector with a design that celebrates British Columbia’s Interior. Architectural features evoke imagery from B.C.’s vineyards and orchards, fishing lodges and the Fraser River and Canyon. The space is anchored by the contemporary art piece, The Rivers Monument, by B.C. First Nations artist Marianne Nicolson. In 2014 YVR was voted Best Airport in North America in

the 2014 Skytrax World Airport Awards and the 9th Best Airport in the World—the only North American airport to receive such an accolade. YVR’s commitment to safe and efficient airport operations, creating a compelling sense of place and caring for every customer has garnered these awards and is embedded in the design of the A-B Connector. The expansion was built

using funds collected from the Airport Improvement Fee, retail sales and airplane landing fees. The terminal areas remained open and operational during construction to ensure completion of the project in a practical and fiscally responsible way. The A-B Connector will be used primarily by WestJet, Central Mountain Air, Air North, Hawkair, Sunwing and Air Transat.

The Talking Stick Festival was initially conceived in 2001 as one evening of cabaret performance. Since that time it has grown and evolved into what it is today—a two-week celebration serving to preserve and promote the language, culture and art forms of the First Nations people by developing and presenting Aboriginal traditions of music, dance, and storytelling in a contemporary and entertaining way. set of unique transportation challenges, specifically employees travelling outside of TransLink’s operational hours. The go2gether carpooling service offers an easy and convenient solution for everyone working on Sea Island. To enrol, simply signup for an account using your email address, fill in your user profile and preferences to receive alerts on available carpools. Vancouver Airport Authority recently announced the sale of 40 BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Vancouver Airport Authority recently announced the sale of 40 BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks to the City and County of San Francisco, for use at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). SFO is the latest airport to implement BorderXpress kiosks. The industry’s leading selfservice border control solution, BorderXpress kiosks help speed up the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) process by up to 50 per cent. By automating part of the border clearance process, BorderXpress helps U.S. CBP officers to process up to four times more passengers than

with traditional clearance. With this increased efficiency, international travellers arriving at SFO will experience shorter wait times, less congestion and faster customs processing times. The kiosks will be fully operational at SFO by March 2015. With the launch of BorderXpress at airports in Aruba in December 2014 and Nassau, The Bahamas in February 2015, YVR’s BorderXpress solution is the first technology of its kind to be available to travellers at international airports with U.S. pre-clearance. Automated Passport Control is an expedited customs entry process that will allow eligible

passengers travelling to U.S. to clear customs more efficiently, while still ensuring the same high standard of safety and security. Instead of filling out a declaration card and taking their travel documents to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection office, passengers who are eligible and choose to use Automated Passport Control can proceed directly to a self-service kiosk in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance area. Travellers will follow the on-screen instructions to scan their U.S. or Canadian passport, answer the customs declaration questions using the touch screen, receive a receipt confirming

their information and proceed to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer to finalize processing. Automated Passport Control is currently open to U.S. passport holders, Canadian passport holders, U.S. permanent residents and travellers from 38 visa-waivered countries. BorderXpress is available at 20 international airports, including the world’s top two busiest airports, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). For a complete list of BorderXpress airports, please visit yvr.ca.

Boeing has delivered a maintenance training system to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) that will help prepare technicians to keep the RCAF’s CH-147F Chinook helicopters mission-ready. The Chinook Maintenance Trainer includes a complete airframe and an interactive display system that allow the technicians to gain experience through addressing a number of scenarios. The training system follows delivery of the final of 15 CH-147F Chinook helicopters to the RCAF in June 2014. Boeing has also delivered six training aids to the RCAF, focussed on specific items such as aircraft wiring and fuel tank maintenance. “Boeing’s training helps pre-

pare our customer to meet a wide range of operational requirements,” said Tony Barnett, Boeing project manager for Canadian Medium-to-Heavy Lift Helicopters (MHLH) Training Systems. “This training suite complements a very capable CH-147F aircraft and will permit the RCAF to accomplish their near-term operational missions.” This system is the most recent part of Boeing’s training for the RCAF and follows on instruction on the Chinook’s systems that Boeing has provided to more than 180 pilots and maintenance technicians. The RCAF will use the system at its MHLH Maintenance Training Center, which is being constructed at Garrison Petawawa, Ontario.

After the success of its first six direct return flights last month, Qantas has made the decision to resume service for the busy summer and winter holidays, announcing an extended 2015 Vancouver-Sydney seasonal schedule. Qantas offered a two-week non-stop service in January 2015, which proved to be popular with both Australian and Canadian passengers and the upcoming schedule summer and winter service will offer more choice, with an increase in services from two to three flights per week. “We are thrilled to welcome Qantas back to YVR for summer and winter service,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Their return provides Canadian and Australian travellers with great options for vacation destinations and brings growth in tourism and economic benefits to the province.” Adding this seasonal service will bring approximately 2,000 new visitors who would not have otherwise come to Vancouver. Collectively, it is estimated that these new visitors will spend

more than $2.5-million dollars in the province, which will in turn support 22 new jobs in British Columbia. Qantas will operate 33 return services between Sydney and Vancouver—13 return services in June/July 2015 and 20 return services from mid-December 2015 to late January 2016. Flights will be operated via a three-cabin, 364-seat refurbished Boeing 747 aircraft. From June 20 to July 18, 2015, flights will depart from Sydney on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 5:05pm arriving at 2pm in Vancouver. Flights will leave Vancouver on the same days at 9:30pm and arrive in Sydney at 6:05am (plus 2days). Winter service will start December 12, 2015 to January 25, 2016 and flights will depart from Sydney Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 7:05pm, arriving at 2pm in Vancouver. Flights will leave Vancouver on the same days at 8pm and will arrive at 6:15am (+2days) in Sydney. For more information, visit Qantas.com.au.

Types of headaches and its causes

Most people have experienced a headache at some point in their lives. Headaches come in various forms and can be triggered by a variety of factors, ranging from stress and tiredness to emotional upset. Most headaches disappear on their own or with the help of mild pain relievers. In a small number of cases, headaches may signal a more serious condition that requires immediate medical attention Headaches are not all the same. There are numerous types, each with its own signs and symptoms. Tension headache—This type of headache pain is the most common. Eyestrain, fatigue, and stress—mental or emotional— are all key ingredients in this type. These headaches are usually dull, with pressure felt around both sides of the head. The ache can last for hours or days at a time, with mild to moderate pain that typically worsens by the end of the day. Sinus headache—This type often comes on during or after nasal congestion or a runny nose. Pain is usually felt at the front of the head. It is commonly worse in cold, damp weather and during morning hours. Sinus headaches are caused when bacteria invade and infect the nasal sinuses. Cluster headache—As the name implies, this type typically occurs in “clusters” that can range from one to several headaches a day. Episodes usually last for six to twelve weeks. Unlike tension headaches, stress is not a triggering factor and the pain is usually on one side of the head. They are often accompanied by other symptoms on the side of the headache such as redness and tearing of the eye, drooping eyelid and nasal stuffiness and dripping. Ice-pick headache—These are fairly rare, but fairly painful when they occur. Severe pain is

localized to one small spot and comes without warning. Attacks usually last less than an hour— generally 10 to 15 minutes. Rebound headache—These may develop as a result of medication overuse. If headache medications are being more than twice a week, or not as recommended by a doctor, the ensuing result could be further headaches. This is as a result of the body getting used to the medication and may trigger a withdrawal reaction when the headache medication wears off. This can cause a cycle of getting a headache and taking more medication. Speak with a doctor or pharmacist about how to safely reduce the use of any medications that are being used to manage headaches. Migraines—No ordinary

headaches, they are generally more severe and can be debilitating. Pain ranges from mild to severe and isn’t necessarily the only symptom. Migraine headaches are divided into two categories: migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Some people experience a pre-headache stage known as an aura, which can last about 10 to 30 minutes. A typical aura includes visual disturbances such as blind spots, zigzag flashes, and light sparks. The aura normally clears as the headache starts, but there can be some overlap. Sometimes the aura will occur without a headache but more often no aura occurs before the headache. Although headaches can be painful and debilitating, they are usually not due to dangerous

conditions. If you tend to experience headaches that are frequent and severe, your doctor will examine you for any serious, life-threatening conditions (e.g., stroke, meningitis) and start emergency care if needed. As well, if you regularly have headaches and experience a change in the pattern of your usual headaches, you should see your doctor. Typically, a thorough medical history and physical examination is enough for a good diagnosis. Since tension headaches are very common, your doctor will ask questions about your current stress level and other personal factors that may be triggering your headaches. One-of-a-kind LED lighting system, reminiscent of the Northern Lights, installed throughout the main cabin of the Hekla Aurora.

Icelandair has painted one of its Boeing 757-200 series aircraft in a special Northern Lightsthemed colour palette. The aircraft, which is called Hekla Aurora, is just one component of Icelandair’s campaign celebrating the Icelandair Stopover. This option allows

passengers to stopover in Iceland for up to seven nights at no additional airfare on trips between North American and Europe. In addition to being wrapped in new livery, Hekla Aurora has been installed with a beautiful one-of-a-kind LED mood light-

ing system, which recreates the breathtaking natural phenomenon that is the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Icelandair offers weekly transatlantic flights from Vancouver, but there has been no word yet as to if and when Hekla Aurora will be seen at YVR.

Airline News Qantas launches invitation-only bidding system for frequent flyers’ upgrades Qantas has introduced a new Bid Now Upgrades, which allows invited Frequent Flyers booked in Economy and Premium Economy to make an offer for a Business upgrade using a combination of money and Qantas Points. Bid Now Upgrades, which will be gradually introduced across the Qantas network this month, are allocated after all Classic Upgrade Rewards— points-only upgrades—have been processed. The new system ranks below Classic Upgrade Rewards in terms of priority and value, but gives members the flexibility to supplement points with a cash payment. While many other airlines offer similar upgrade bidding

processes, Qantas’ Bid Now Upgrades is unique in the market since it is the only system to offer customers an upgrade option using a combination of points and money. The new upgrade option follows other changes by Qantas to unlock revenue opportunities, including a significant increase in aircraft utilization that has seen new routes and extra services added to its network. How the Bid Now Upgrades work: Customers invited to participate in Bid Now Upgrades will receive an email, seven days before departure, enabling them to make an offer for an upgrade within a set range of points and money. Minimums are from 3,000

Qantas Points for a domestic upgrade and from 5,000 Qantas Points for an international upgrade. A minimum dollar amount will also be required. Customers’ Bid Now Upgrades offer can be modified or cancelled at any time up until 24 hours before departure, but customers are not able to see each other’s offers. Customers will be notified via email approximately one day before departure if their offer has been successful or not. If a customer is not successful, they pay nothing and keep their current seat. For more details, and a full list of terms and conditions, visit qantas.com/bidnowupgrades.

Boeing and Embraer have opened a joint sustainable aviation biofuel research center in a collaborative effort between the two aerospace companies to further establish the aviation biofuel industry in Brazil. At the Boeing-Embraer Joint Research Center in the São José dos Campos Technology Park, the companies will coordinate and co-fund research with Brazilian universities and other institutions. The research will focus on

technologies that address gaps in creating a sustainable aviation biofuel industry in Brazil, such as feedstock production, technoeconomic analysis, economic viability studies and processing technologies. Studies have shown that sustainably produced aviation biofuel emits 50 to 80 per cent lower carbon emissions through its life cycle than fossil jet fuel. Globally, more than 1,600 passenger flights using sustain-

able aviation biofuel have been conducted since it was first approved for use in 2011.

Travel Europe and eat like James Bond Few images are as enduring or iconic as that of writer Ian Fleming’s fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond. As a franchise, the name James Bond has spawned a host of aspirations, ranging from the acquisition of an Aston Martin or a limited-edition Omega watch to the consumption of vodka martinis. But for all the stylish cars, expensive watches, and shaking—not stirring—inspired by 007, the final bastion of the Bond brand is the food that fuels this international secret agent. In his book James Bond’s Cuisine: 007’s Every Last Meal author Matt Sherman draws on Bond movies and books to provide travellers, foodies and fans the names of places where they, too, can eat like the world’s most sophisticated spy. With Bond employed by the British Intelligence Service, it comes as no surprise that the U.K. contains more mentions of

real-life restaurants that Bond frequented than anywhere else in Europe. Of the many locations where Bond enjoyed a meal or drinks, 21 are still open today. The vast majority are in or near to London and include the MI6 canteen—which may require more than a quick phone call to make a reservation—and wellknown venues such as Ascot Racecourse. UK and Ireland At Ascot, smoked salmon sandwiches enjoyed with Dom Pérignon champagne provide a good start to enacting the suave spy persona. For dinner, head to Chelsea and the popular Italian eatery Alvaro—now La Famiglia—where Bond ordered spaghetti alle vongole. For dining alfresco, a Harrods’ picnic hamper is a favourite of the double-0 agent. While in London consider a visit to The Reform Club, used as a Bond film location in Die

Another Day (2002). The venue is also the likely inspiration for Blades Club, the fictitious Bond gentlemen’s club from Bond novels. In Scotland, Bond enjoyed a breakfast of porridge and scrambled eggs in Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel, and a tenderloin steak for dinner at Hotel Malmaison. Over on Irish soil, Bond enjoyed steak dinners in Kilkenny’s Newpark Hotel as well as Shannon Airport, making it easy to enjoy a 007 dinner directly on touchdown. Germany and Austria Of the real-life restaurants in Germany and Austria, Bond fans can get their fill by visiting locations still open in the cities of Berlin, Munich, Salzburg and Wasserburg am Inn. In the German capital the Kempinski Hotel is probably the best known venue to grab a

Bond-approved bite, where 007 enjoyed dishes of smoked salmon and beef wellington. No visit to Germany is complete without sausage and beer, which Bond did in typical style, on one occasion knocking back four steins and plenty of Weisswurst for lunch in Munich’s Zum Franziskaner Keller. Throughout the Bond series it becomes clear that breakfast— usually consisting of scrambled eggs, toast and strong black coffee—is the spy’s favourite meal of the day. He tucked into one such tasty dish in Salzburg’s Goldener Hirsch. Not only is this breakfast Bond-approved, it also provides adequate fuel for a long day of sightseeing. Switzerland, Italy and Greece Throughout the Bond franchise there are a whole host of eateries featured in Switzerland,

Italy and Greece, including the now defunct Orient Express, and the still popular Rialto Fish Market of Venice. One location every keen Bond fan should visit is Rome’s Ristorante Tres Scalini, which has been open since 1815. Here, Bond enjoyed lunch followed by Italian coffee and a sambuca at the visually stunning Casina Valadier hotel and restaurant. Netherlands, France Portugal and Monaco Together these three countries—and one principality—are home to a handful of places that fans can still visit. In the Netherlands at the Hilton Amsterdam hotel, a plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and marmalade is how Bond started the day. In Monaco, head to one of Bond’s favourite locations, the Casino de Monte-Carlo, for the classic shaken, not stirred, vodka

martini. France offers the largest selection of restaurants and bars visited by Bond, including what could be the most iconic, Le Jules Verne. Built into the Eiffel Tower, it is where Bond enjoyed foie gras topped with caviar on toasted brioche. For a lighter lunch, Belmont Reid’s Palace in Funchal, Portugal, is where Bond lunched on hams and salads from the buffet. Apparently a regular since the 1930s, Bond clearly appreciated its fine cuisine. Situated on the island of Madeira, it offers an excellent holiday location along with the enjoyment of superb food. Self-driving cars to be on Canadian roads by 2020-2025 Buckle up and get ready for the next big thing. Automated Vehicles (AVs), already on the road in some form, will continue to rapidly enter the onramps, highways and Canadian roadways, packed with time-saving benefits and reducing road collisions. A new study from The Conference Board of Canada, in collaboration with the Van Horne Institute and Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE), titled Automated Vehicles: The Coming of the Next Disruptive

New improved Subaru Outback

Over its 20-year history Subaru’s rugged wagon has remained true to its roots, while receiving periodic Improvements and many industry awards including 2015 Best Crossover from Car Guide Best Buys in Canada. Appearance for the 2015 model seems similar to last year’s outgoing model except for a revised grille, light-weight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirrors. On the inside, welcome updates include a quieter cabin with a reshaped dashboard, bigger front seats and a larger floor console. Performance-wise, the Outback’s suspension has been retuned with Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during turning, which provides improved handling. The base 2.5-litre, four cylinder engine has increased horsepower (175 versus 173) and maintains the same torque rating of 174 pound-feet. Optional engines include a 3.6- litre sixcylinder with 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet torque or the four-cylinder engine, which comes with a six-speed manual transmission or with continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology which is standard on the six-cylinder model. The standard all–wheel-drive (AWD) system has been tuned for improved hazardous driving conditions. A new driver–controlled X-mode adjusts the transmission, engine output and AWD system to reduce wheelspin and provide even better off-road handling. Visit Richmond Subaru for competitive pricing and take a test drive. www.richmondsubaru. com.

Technology, estimates that selfdriving cars could be on the roads by 2020-25 and economic benefits for Canada could total more than $65-billion per year. The impact of AVs is significant, with total potential benefits for Canada estimated at $65-billion.

There will also be wider economic and technological effects including substantial changes in land values as AVs increase sprawl and urban intensification. There is a strong likelihood that people will be willing to tolerate longer commutes if they are able to be pro-

ductive in the vehicle, especially if it means trading a longer commute for cheaper housing. Jobs and trades will change as direct and indirect employment displacement may occur in transport, truck and courier services, taxi and bus drivers, auto insurance, driving instructors and

parking attendance. On the positive side, there will be new business opportunities for the auto and technological industries related to the design and manufacture of sensors, software, etc. for AVs. AV roll out will also impact any business involved in freight

or passenger transportation: carsharing, car-rental companies, insurance companies, retail and commercial building management (who provide large parking spaces). To read the entire report, visit www.conferenceboard. ca.
