Vancouver International Airport (YVR) was recently named #1 Airport in North America for the sixth year in a row at the Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Paris, France. Skytrax is considered the premier international airport awards and is voted on by more than 13-million passengers worldwide. This was the first time in Skytrax award history that an airport has maintained a #1 ranking for six consecutive years. “This recognition for a sixth year in a row is a testament to all the people who contribute to

our shared success,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “I want to acknowledge and thank our community, passengers, partners and the 24,000 people who work and volunteer at YVR. We are both proud and humbled and will continue to collectively care for all our customers while connecting B.C. to the world.” Known informally in the travel industry as the Passenger Choice Awards, the Skytrax World Airport Awards are the global benchmark of airport excellence. More than 13-million passenger surveys were independently conducted across 550 airports in 112 countries measuring 39 dimensions of the airport experience, ranging from

check-in to border clearance efficiency, signage, transportation availability, design and layout, as well as shopping, service and dining options. YVR was also named the best-airport in the 10 to 20-million-passenger category. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport was named Best Airport Hotel in North America. The hotel category was introduced five years ago and Fairmont Vancouver Airport has held first place in four of those five years. To celebrate, YVR will thank its passengers, partners, community and, of course, employees by creating a festive atmosphere in the terminal, handing out treats and thanking them for their continued support.

Filipino send-off from YVR to New York YVR recently welcomed Philippine Airline’s (PAL) new service route, which connects Manila, Vancouver and New York. This new service will add four additional flights a week between YVR and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), with an added benefit of increasing flights between Manila and Vancouver from seven to eleven flights a week. “We are thrilled that Philippine Airlines has introduced this new service connecting Manila, Vancouver and New York,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “British Columbians now have increased flexibility and choices to fly to New York City to watch their favourite Broadway show, and the

Philippines to enjoy a sunny destination.” The new service was welcomed with a public celebration at The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: the Jade Canoe sculpture in the International Terminal. The public celebration was followed by a gate ceremony for the airline’s passengers at Gate 73, which included the Deputy Consul General of Philippines in Vancouver, Anthony Mandap; PAL president and COO, Jaime J. Bautista; and PAL chairman and CEO, Dr. Lucio Tan. “[This] will not just mark the launch of PAL’s Vancouver to New York service; it will also kick off an expansion of our Canadian operations,” said Jamie J. Bautista, president and COO, Philippine Airlines. See FILIPINO SEND-OFF page 3

(Far Right) Harjit Sandhu, who initiated a weekly volunteer airport FOD Walk, is Sea Island’s YVR Star of the month.

YVR is proud to have been voted the Best Airport in North America for six years in a row, a feat made possible because of the 24,000 dedicated employees and volunteers on Sea Island who go above and beyond for YVR’s visitors. To show appreciation to the hard-working individuals who make up the airport’s incredible team, YVR has initiated YVR Stars, a new program to publicly recognize exceptional customer care. This month’s featured YVR Star is Harjit Sandhu, a ramp manager at SwissPort. Sandhu was nominated for his dedication and professionalism, his leadership and commitment to

his company’s partners and employees and his passion for ensuring a safe airside environment. In memory of two co-workers who lost their battles with cancer last year, Sandhu has initiated a weekly volunteer FOD Walk to clear foreign object debris from the airfield. In addition to honouring his late co-workers, these walks play an important role in ensuring the safety of passengers and the Sea Island community. Have you witnessed great customer care in action at YVR? Then nominate a YVR Star. Fill in a form at any Customer Care counter in the terminal or email yvrstars@yvr.ca.

YVR is first North American airport with direct link to Kunming, China

Changshui International Airport (KMG) is the primary airport serving Kunming, the capital city of China’s Yunnan Province. Photo: Luodingyu.

Starting June 26, 2015 China Eastern Airlines will offer threetime weekly direct service between Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) and YVR. The service will con-

nect via Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport and will establish Vancouver as the first North American destination from Kunming—one of China’s premier tourism regions. “This new service marks

another step toward achieving our mission of connecting British Columbia to the world,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Kunming is a key gateway destination and is the largest city in Yunnan Province, with a rich and vibrant history and a great future as a transportation hub. Having service to Kunming from YVR opens up exciting new tourism and business opportunities for Canadians and further establishes Vancouver as a gateway hub between Asia and the Americas.” Known as the City of Eternal Spring due to its mild climate, Kunming has a population of 7.2-million and is a renowned tourism destination, as well as a significant connecting point to major South East Asia locations. The new direct service to YVR compliments the recent agreement between China and Canada to provide 10-year multiple-entry visas to Canadian and Chinese citizens for business, tourism or family purposes. “Companies doing business between China and Canada

always benefit from reduced complexity,” said Sarah Kutulakos, executive director of the Canada China Business Council. “This new, efficient means of travel is a very positive development.” In addition to increased passenger flow and economic opportunities between the two cities, foreign passport holders connecting to a third country via Kunming can enjoy the 72-hour visa-free transit in Kunming before departure. And passengers originating from YVR or KMG can have their bags checked through to either end destination. YVR has strong linkages to China, with more than 70 flights per week during the summer and 59 flights per week, currently. YVR is the only airport in North America with service from four mainland China carriers and was the first North American airport selected by Sichuan Airlines for its long-haul flight. Traffic to the Asia-Pacific region reached almost three-million passengers in 2014, up 9.8 per cent over 2013, with traffic to Mainland China up 6.66 per cent.

Air New Zealand to increase daily VancouverAuckland service

Air New Zealand will increase its daily Vancouver-Auckland service over northern winter 2015/16 peak season between mid-December 2015 and late-January 2016.

Air New Zealand will move to a daily return service on the popular Vancouver-Auckland route over the peak northern winter period between mid-December 2015 and late-January 2016. This will be the first time the airline has operated daily return services on the route and represents a 21 per cent increase in capacity over the previous sixweek peak northern winter period. Air New Zealand will be providing service using top to tail refurbished 777-200ER aircraft, which will include luxury leather Premium Economy seating and the airline’s award-winning Economy Skycouch product. “We are very pleased about the continuing growth out of

our Vancouver gateway, so it is only fitting that we are able to offer our Canadian customers more scheduled flights as well as more choices for comfort and convenience when travelling to New Zealand—or Australia via Auckland,” said Chris Myers Air New Zealand vice president of the Americas. “The new Premium Economy product gives customers a taste of luxury with a custom leather seat featuring individual armrests, a leg rest and an extendable foot support. Meanwhile, 20 rows in the Economy cabin will be fitted with the Economy Skycouch, giving customers the choice to purchase a row of three seats that easily convert to a flat surface.”

The airline will bump up capacity across the entire northern winter season, adding almost 3,000 seats to the route in each direction, representing a 10 per cent increase in capacity compared with the previous year. Air New Zealand offers a convenient overnight service to New Zealand, departing from Vancouver early evening and arriving into Auckland early in the morning, allowing for same day connections to 24 domestic New Zealand and eight Australian gateways. For more information on flights, visit airnewzealand. com.

Air Canada Jetz with six of Canada’s top hockey teams

Rare World War II Lancaster heading to Alberta Aviation Museum

Air Canada Jetz Airbus A319 delivers business class charter aviation service to professional sports teams, entertainment groups and corporate clients.

Air Canada has signed agreements to provide air transportation to six of Canada’s major professional hockey teams through Air Canada Jetz, the airline’s in-house, all-Premium Class charter service operated by mainline Air Canada pilots and flight attendants. The six-year agreements with these hockey teams begin at the start of the 2015-16 season and

cover air transportation for the Vancouver Canucks, the Calgary Flames, the Winnipeg Jets, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Ottawa Senators and the Montreal Canadiens. “Every franchise needs a star performer to carry it to victory and Air Canada is proud to have been drafted for this role by six of Canada’s top pro teams,” said Benjamin Smith, president of

Passenger Airlines at Air Canada. Jetz services uses an Airbus A319 aircraft outfitted with 58-Premium Class seats to offer extra legroom and a private jetlike experience. In addition to the six Canadian teams, Jetz also provides air transport services to the Colorado Avalanche ice hockey franchise based in Denver, Colorado.

A rare Lancaster bomber KB882, which helped map the Canadian North, is moving from the Maritimes to a new home at the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton. KB882 was one of 430 Lancasters built in Malton, Ontario. It flew 11 missions near the close of the war and was then returned to Canada to serve with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Lancasters were considered the backbone of the Commonwealth bombing efforts during World War Two. Only 17 of the more than 7,300 aircraft built still exist. The Alberta Aviation Museum is committed to restoring and protecting the aircraft, and displaying it for future generations to appreciate.

“KB882 is indeed a time capsule preserved intact for over half a century,” said Lech Lebiedowski, curator Alberta Aviation Museum. “In many ways, it is a curator’s dream coming true. It will also be one of the most exciting restoration projects we have ever undertaken.” The museum has a strong track record of restoration, having completed ground-up rebuilds on many important aircraft, including a B-25 Mitchell bomber, a De Havilland Mosquito, and two Noorduyn Norseman’s, among others. The museum is accepting donations for KB882’s restoration. Tax receipts are available for donations in excess of $25. For more information, visit albertaaviationmuseum.com.

Hearing loss: are you at risk? One-third of Canadians over 65 have some type of hearing loss. However, this is not just a problem for seniors, since younger people can also be affected. In fact, 10 per cent of all Canadians have some type of hearing loss. Some of the most common causes of hearing loss include: Noise exposure: Short or long-term exposure damages the delicate hair cells in the inner ear. These cells translate sound vibrations into nerve signals so that the brain will recognize and “hear” the sounds. Unfortunately, noiserelated damage is irreversible. Aging: Although people of all ages can be affected by hearing loss, the risk increases with age. The cause of age-related hearing loss is not always clear— sometimes it may be related to a lifetime of noise exposure, while other times a genetic component may be involved. Infections or injuries: If not treated, ear infections can damage the eardrum, the bones in the middle ear (which transmit sound to the inner ear), or the nerves responsible for hearing. Head injuries or trauma to the ear can also lead to hearing loss. Other: Possible other causes of hearing loss include Ménière’s disease—a condition that damages the inner ear—certain medications such as antibiotics and cancer treatments, earwax build-ups, congenital conditions, prenatal conditions and family history. Protect your hearing Fortunately, there are ways to prevent noise-induced hearing loss and also lessen age-related hearing loss. Watch your decibels: Shortterm exposure to loud noises, such as explosions, fireworks, or jet engines can cause hearing loss. Even listening to an MP3 player too loud or too long can damage hearing. The loudness of a sound is measured in decibels (dB). Sounds that are louder than 85 dB can cause hearing loss. The higher the decibels, the shorter

such as earwax and damaged eardrums, can be treated to improve hearing. Have regular medical checkups to find potential health conditions that may affect hearing loss. The Canadian Hearing Society recommends a hearing test every two years, or if there is a sudden unexplained change in hearing. Sudden hearing loss can be a symptom of other serious medical problems. the amount of time you can be exposed to the sound before hearing loss occurs. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety recommends ear protection for people exposed to sounds of 85 dB or higher. Decibel ratings of some common sounds: • Ambulance siren or airplane taking off: 120 dB • Nightclub: 120 dB • Movie theatre: up to 117 dB • Listening to music with headphones: 105-120 dB if the

volume is at maximum • Motorcycle: 95 dB • Noisy restaurant or heavy traffic: 85 dB • Riding in a car: 70 dB • Normal conversation: 60 dB • Fridge humming: 40 dB Protective measures against noise-related hearing loss: • Wear ear protection (ear plugs or ear muffs) if exposed to sounds of more than 85 dB. Generally, a sound is too loud if a person talking one metre in distance is inaudible.

• Wear the recommended ear protection in a noisy workplace • Follow the 60-60 rule for personal music devices—listen at 60 per cent of the maximum volume for up to 60 minutes per day. Be careful not to turn up the sound too high when in noisy surroundings, such as public transit. Some medical conditions, such as ear infections, can lead to hearing loss if not treated. Luxury hotel chain achieves global CO2 reduction target

One of the Fairmont Vancouver Airport’s green initiatives is its beekeeping program, which helps the local environment by providing plenty of bees to pollinate area gardens and parks. Photo: courtesy Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.

Fairmont Hotels and Resorts has achieved World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Climate Savers Program targets, reducing its operational CO2 emissions by 20 per cent below 2006 levels and becoming the first hotel brand to meet this ambitious environmental goal. WWF’s Climate Savers Program was designed to inspire companies to change their thinking about climate solutions, while also encouraging them to transform themselves into low-carbon leaders. Since its founding over a century ago, Fairmont has worked to deepen its connection to the environment and communities where it conducts business. This mindset led to the launch of the highly acclaimed and industry-leading Green Partnership Program, now known as the Fairmont Sustainability Partnership, a comprehensive approach to

reducing the company’s impact on the environment and to the brand embracing the Climate Savers Program. Fairmont Hotels around the world also take a unique approach to the challenge of reducing the brand’s carbon footprint, upgrading infrastructure and changing behaviours to reach the company’s goal. For example, Fairmont Vancouver Airport, recently named the Best Airport Hotel in North America at the 2015 Skytrax Awards, has 34 bee colonies happily residing each summer at McDonald Beach Park, located just five minutes from the hotel. One-million bees produce the ‘liquid gold’ that is available for purchase at the hotel. This tasty nectar is featured in both food and drink recipes at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Globe@YVR and Jetside Bar.

If you are planning any travel to Asia, don’t let a nasty virus ruin your trip. The Public Health Agency of Canada reminds Canadians planning trips to China, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and other parts of eastern and central Asia to protect themselves against avian influenza. There are several types of avian influenza viruses that spread quickly and easily among birds and rarely affect humans. However, in some cases such as H5N1 and H7N9, avian influenza has caused serious illness in humans exposed to infected live birds. Primary symptoms include severe pneumonia and breathing difficulties. Some cases have resulted in death. “Travellers need to be vigilant when visiting China, particularly in the eastern provinces where the majority of human H7N9 cases have been reported,” said Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Gregory Taylor. “Avian influenza viruses do not transmit easily from per-

son to person, so the best way to reduce the risk is to avoid highrisk areas like chicken farms and live markets. As with any flu virus, frequent hand washing is also one of the most effective ways to avoid getting sick.” The same advice is recommended for travellers to Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia, where cases of H5N1 have been reported.

Travellers can minimize their risk of contracting avian influenza by: • Avoiding contact with birds, including chickens, ducks and wild birds. • Avoiding any surfaces that may have bird droppings or secretions on them. • Ensuring all poultry dishes are well cooked, including eggs. General healthy practices are also encouraged to minimize the spread of germs: • Wash hands as often as possible under warm water, with soap for at least 20 seconds. • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. It is a good idea to always keep hand sanitizer with you when you travel. • Cover your mouth and nose with your arm when you cough or sneeze. If you use a tissue, dispose of it as soon as possible and wash your hands afterwards. If you develop flu-like symptoms while travelling in China or within 14 days after you return, see a health care provider and tell them where you’ve been travelling or living. For more information, consult the Agency’s Travel Health Notices on avian influenza on the Travel.gc.ca website.

San Diego Bay, located in San Diego Country, California near the U.S.-Mexico border, is the third largest of three large, protected natural bays on California’s 1,350-kilometre long coastline.

Southern California’s spring saltwater fishing season is fast approaching and with fresh catches available just off the coast, this is the perfect time to discover San Diego as a worldrenowned sportfishing paradise. San Diego Bay is home to the world’s largest sportfishing fleet, welcoming national and international visitors. With sunny blue skies and average temperatures in the 70s, anglers can enjoy saltwater fishing year-round in the bountiful waters of the Pacific Ocean. Depending on the season, yellowfin, bluefin, yellowtail, albacore, mahi mahi (dorado), marlin and mako can be caught offshore, while an inshore catch might include calico bass, halibut, rockfish, sheephead, croaker, corbina or white sea bass. Top five reasons anglers love San Diego: 1. Multiple landings: San Diego Bay has three main landings that are home to dozens of state-of-the-art fishing ves-

sels outfitted with the latest fish-finding equipment and amenities. These include H&M Landing, Fisherman’s Landing and Point Loma Sportfishing, located near downtown. 2. Variety: Anglers can cast their lines on a wide variety of daily ocean charter fishing trips, ranging from family friendly full- and half-day excursions to multiday trips to offshore islands, the outer banks and deep into Mexican waters. San Diego also has numerous private charters that offer anglers a more personal fishing experience. 3. Easy processing: Processing of fresh catches can be done by the boat crew or one of the local processing facilities that will not only fillet, vacuum seal and freeze the fish, but also conveniently ship the fillets home for guests. 4. Celebrating the craft: On April 19, visitors are invited

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik

Ignition Coil Replacement: 2006 Audi A4 2006 Audi A4 with two-litre turbocharged engine.

The ignition coil is an integral part of a gasoline-powered engine’s ignition system. Its function is to generate the high voltage required to fire the spark plug(s), which in turn ignites the compressed air and fuel in an engine’s cylinder. There are tremendous advantages to this system as the vehicle’s powertrain computer can fire each spark precisely at the optimal time. The computer can also monitor the energy consumption of each ignition and determine the success of the combustion. Ignition systems have evolved tremendously over the years. A few decades ago, most engines used one ignition coil to fire all the cylinders in a vehicle. The spark-ignition occurred via a distributor that was, for the most part, a purely mechanical device. Prior to that, the spark event was created by breaker points—a mechanical contact that would ‘break’ a circuit at the time the

spark was needed. These were crude devices by modern standards but they worked surprisingly well. For example, the Model A Ford used one ignition coil per cylinder, much like the Audi A4, however unlike the Audi’s precise computer-controlled spark, the Ford’s coils fired continuously. Our client brought in his 2006 Audi A4 because the vehicle’s Check Engine Light was on and the engine was not running smoothly. Our diagnostic tests found that #3 cylinder ignition coil was dead. When we priced the repair, we were astounded to find that the cost of the replacement ignition coil—a name brand Bosch part—was only $35. Why so inexpensive? This ignition coil fits in many Audi and VW engines—a clear advantage for buying a more mainstream vehicle. The price for parts on rare vehicles is usually much more costly. The repair on this 2006 Audi

Ignition coil from Audi A4— The coil sits directly on top of the spark plug and is fired precisely when it receives a signal from the vehicle’s powertrain computer.

Spring has arrived and, according to the sales team at RE/MAX Westcoast, the real estate market maintained a steady pace during the month of March 2015, with many cities in Metro Vancouver continuing to exceed expectations. Sales of single family homes in Richmond continue to perform extremely well. There were many multiple offers on properties under $1-million, with 15 per cent of these properties selling above the listed price. The Condo and Townhouse markets also continue to be steady and on an upward trend. At RE/MAX Westcoast, there were 559 single family homes for sale, of which 224 sold, representing a 40.07 per cent sales ratio. The most popular areas of single fam-

ily homes sales were: • Boyd Park (Francis and Railway) 100 per cent sales ratio • Steveston North (South of Williams and No. 1 Road) 70.37 per cent sales ratio • Steveston South and Steveston Village—both achieved a 66.67 per cent sales ratio. The Condo and Townhouse markets remained steady, with a 26.63 per cent overall sales ratio. The most popular areas were: • Boyd Park (Francis and Railway) 55.56 per cent sales ratio • Garden city (Garden City and Blundell) 46.15 per cent sales ratio • Brighhouse South (South of Granville and No. 3 Road) 36.57 per cent sales ratio.

Fairmont Vancouver Airport and Harbour Air Seaplanes team up to offer ‘food and flights’ contest The combination of good food and good flights provided a winning formula when The Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel and Harbour Air Seaplanes teamed up to offer a contest that included four one-night stays at the award-winning hotel, and roundtrip flights with Harbour Air Seaplanes. The contest celebrated the release of a Harbour Air Seaplane with a freshly wrapped tail that included The Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel’s branding. For the month of March, individuals who spotted this special seaplane were invited to submit their photos to “Spot the Plane to Win” these special prizes. During the contest period, the especially liveried seaplane was used in the regular Harbour Air Seaplanes fleet to transport travellers to numerous destinations in British Columbia including Victoria, Whistler, Vancouver and Richmond.
