At its recent Annual Public Meeting, Vancouver Airport Authority released its 2014 financial and operating results and launched YVR 2057, a multi-year public consultation program focused on the development of a new 20-year Master Plan for land use planning at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). “We are launching our newest Master Plan consultation called YVR 2057,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This plan will

inform our future land use and how we meet the needs of our stakeholders and communities. Our goal is to ensure that YVR can serve out growth while continuing to be a jobs creator and economic generator for British Columbia.” The consultation program will gather input in four phases over two years. (L-R) Gerry Bruno, VP of Government Affairs, YVR; Senator Yonah Martin (Canada); Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration (Canada); Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority; Alice Wong, Minister of State for Seniors (Canada); Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Tourism and Small Business (B.C.); David Goldstein, CEO, Canadian Tourism Commission.

Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander recently announced the expansion of Canada’s China Transit Program (CTP) to include Tokyo and Seoul and his government’s commitment to look at expanding to other cities in China. This expansion of the CTP means more flights to YVR and more jobs for British Columbia. The China Transit Program allows Chinese nationals to transit through approved

Canadian airports, such as YVR, en route to the U.S. without needing a Canadian visa. The China Transit Program is currently available to passengers departing from Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Manila and Taipei. The expansion now includes Chinese nationals departing from Tokyo and Seoul. Further expansion to the China Transit Program is being assessed by the Government of Canada for additional cities in China. “This is huge step

in the right direction for YVR, British Columbia and Canada,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The expansion of the China Transit Program will make YVR more attractive to transiting travellers and ultimately increase YVR’s air service and passenger growth. YVR’s goal is to connect B.C. proudly to the world by becoming a world-class sustainable connecting hub. See VISA-FREE page 3

YVR’s self-serve kiosk technology will be used by Port Metro Vancouver to improve cruise passenger experience and processing.

Port Metro Vancouver, in collaboration with Vancouver Airport Authority, has unveiled 10 BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks for use at its Canada Place cruise terminal. The kiosks aim to increase cruise passenger processing rates through the United States Customs and Border Protection area prior to embarking on a cruise from Vancouver to Alaska. “With this launch, Port Metro Vancouver’s cruise terminal has become the first

introducing it at Port Metro Vancouver, YVR is continuing to innovate and make every travel experience, whether at an airport or a port, more efficient and hassle free.” BorderXpress kiosks help U.S. Customs officers’ process up to four times more passengers than through traditional clearance. With this increased efficiency, travellers leaving from Port Metro Vancouver will experience shorter wait times, less congestion

and faster customs processing times. “U.S. Customs and Border Protection continues to assess and adjust its processes where appropriate and collaboratively work with the tourism industry,” said deputy director, Kurry Pastilong, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “The recent evolution of APC for cruise ship passengers is just one more way that the agency is striving to ease the flow of passengers without sacrificing core mission requirements.”

Eligible passengers for BorderXpress include U.S. and Canadian passport holders and U.S. Permanent Residents. This service is available without pre-registration and at no cost to the user. Vancouver Airport Authority also recently unveiled eight BorderXpress Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks at Portland International Airport (PDX), Oregon, in time for the summer travel season.

Community YVR Stars shine in-terminal and at Tourism Richmond service awards This month, four hard working YVR Stars were recognized for their exceptional customer care and also nominated in this year’s annual Tourism Richmond Service Awards, held on Monday, June 8, 2015. The awards recognize people, businesses or companies that demonstrate outstanding service and hospitality. The four YVR Stars are: Irfan Ali, YVR curbside operations representative—nominated for providing speedy assistance to a visitor in need. When Ali noticed someone having car trouble while awaiting an arriving passenger, he jumped into action, recruiting another helper to give the car a boost. This action saved the visitor a very long wait for roadside assistance. Fatima Rasool, Marquise Facilities customer care advisor—nominated for helping an anxious traveller. The traveller,

who had missed his flight, wrote a letter commending Rasool for her “extremely helpful, kind and professional” attention, which enabled him to calm down, rebook his flight and be on his way. Harold Roeck, YVR Greencoat volunteer—nominated for going above and beyond in aiding a lost traveller. Roeck met the YVR-bound traveller by chance on the SkyTrain, heading in the wrong direction. Roeck then went out of his way to personally escort the individual, not only to the Canada Line Waterfront station, but all the way to YVR’s check-in counter.

Sadly, Roeck passed away on January 6, 2015 and is deeply missed by all who knew him. Terry Greenslade, YVR Greencoat Volunteer—nominated for opening his home to a travelling family in need. The family was stranded overnight after missing their connecting flight. With no viable accommodations available, Greenslade graciously invited the family to his home for food and lodging for the night. He also provided the family with breakfast the next morning, before driving them back to the airport. If you observe great customer care in action at YVR, you can nominate the individual for the YVR Star program at any time. Fill in a form at any of the 12 Customer Care counters in the terminals. Submissions can also be made online via Twitter @yvrairport using the hashtag #YVRStars or at yvr.ca/yvrstars.

said Chris Alexander, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister. “The expansion of this program means more traffic through these two major airports, more revenue for both our national and local economies and potential growth in new destination routes, jobs and business and tourism connections. We deeply value our people-to-people and economic ties with China, and the expansion of the CTP is yet another example of Canada’s commitment to this partnership.” Minister Alexander also announced that the Government is simplifying the administrative process by which new airlines participate in the China Transit Program. This will make it easier for airlines to carry eligible Chinese transit passengers through YVR.

WestJet flight attendants vote in favour of new agreement WestJet flight attendants have voted in favour of a new work agreement that includes compensation, work rules, standardized processes and a formal framework for discussion between WestJet flight attendants and the airline. Voting began on May 22, 2015 and ended May 28, 2015, with 81.7 per cent of eligible

flight attendants casting their votes. A tentative agreement had been negotiated between WestJet and the WestJet Flight Attendant Association Board (FAAB), the association representing its flight attendants and was agreed to on April 21, 2015. FAAB is a subgroup of WestJet’s Proactive Commun–

ication Team (PACT), the wholly elected employee association representing close to 9,000 WestJetters. This new agreement is the first one that has been ratified between WestJet and its flight attendants. “These results reflect our collaborative efforts towards a fair and balanced agreement, devel-

oped in the best interests of our people and our business,” said Tyson Matheson, vice-president, inflight, WestJet. “The strong voter turnout shows a high level of engagement with our flight attendants and we are pleased we have reached a five-year agreement. I thank all of our flight attendants for the remarkable guest experience they continue to provide for our guests every day.”

Almost 3,000 flight attendants voted to approve WestJet’s new five-year work agreement, the first between the WestJet Flight Attendant Association Board and the airline.

Boeing employees in Renton, Washington have begun assembly of the wings for the first 737 MAX flight test airplane. Wings are the first 737 components to be assembled in the Renton production process. They will be attached to the first 737 MAX fuselage on the new Central line in Renton Final Assembly later this year. The new production line will

allow the team to isolate the first 737 MAX build from the rest of production in order to learn and perfect the build process while the Renton factory continues to build at a rate of 42 airplanes a month. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliabil-

ity and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. Beginning in 2017, the new single-aisle airplane will deliver 20 per cent lower fuel use than the first Next-Generation 737s and the lowest operating costs in its class—eight per cent per seat less than its nearest competitor. To date, Boeing has received 2,720 orders from 57 customers worldwide for the 737 MAX.

Boeing awarded first commercial human spaceflight mission

YVR Chapel sponsors contest in celebration of Mother’s Day

Boeing was recently awarded its first service flight to the International Space Station as part of a Commercial Crew Transportation Capability agreement with NASA.

Last month, in celebration of Mother’s Day, the YVR community was asked a most pertinent question, courtesy of the YVR Chapel: “What do you most love or appreciate about your Mom?” Associate chaplains posed the question to YVR employees in as many places as possible within the terminals, as well as those who visited the Chapel the week before Mother’s Day, which was celebrated on May 10. Everyone who provided a response to the question was entered into a draw for restaurant prizes from Monk’s Bar & Grill and Thai Hang Vietnamese eatery at YVR. Approximately 125 responses were displayed at the YVR Chapel in the form of a floral motif, which was designed by a Chapel volunteer. As expected, the responses were varied as well as inspiring: “My Mom is the most unselfish and patient Mom in the world!” “She’s always there for me whenever I need her.” “My Mom still calls me to remind me when to eat or drink!” “She teaches me how to be a good man!”

Boeing was selected by NASA in September 2014 to build and fly the United States’ next passenger spacecraft, the Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100. The Commercial Crew Transportation System (CCTS) is being developed in partnership with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which aims to resume U.S.-based flights to space by 2017. As part of its Commercial Crew Transportation Capability

contract, Boeing is guaranteed at least two and potentially six service flights after completing human certification. This is the first time that NASA has contracted with a commercial company for a human spaceflight mission. The CST-100 can transport up to seven passengers or a mix of crew and cargo to lowEarth orbit destinations such as the International Space Station (ISS) and the Bigelow-planned station.

“My Mom is so very funny!” “I appreciate her unconditional love and care.” “She fills so many roles— chef, maid, mentor, nurse and counsellor!” “I love my Mom just for

being my Mom!” The Chapel volunteers and chaplains are now looking forward to Father’s Day, Sunday June 21, 2015 and will be posing a similar question about fathers, with draw prizes to be won.

The Chapel will also have other games and contests as the year progresses, so be on the lookout and visit the Chapel— International Arrivals, across from Tim Horton’s—whenever you have the chance.

An expanded Canada-Cuba Air Transport Agreement, which builds on the 1998 Canada-Cuba Air Transport Agreement, last amended in 2009, was announced earlier this month. Reached under Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which encourages long-term, sustainable competition and the development of international air services, the expanded agreement with Cuba will allow any number of Canadian and Cuban airlines to offer services between the two countries. In addition to strength-

ening safety and security provisions, the agreement provides greater code-sharing opportunities and allows Canadian airlines to introduce new prices more easily in response to consumer demand. The, National Airlines Councils of Canada (NACC), the trade association representing Canada’s largest national and international passenger air carriers, welcomed the expanded air transport agreement announcement from the Canada’s Minister of Transport, the Honourable Lisa Raitt.

“Canada’s major airlines welcome the expansion of the Air Transport Agreement with Cuba, one of Canada’s most important air travel markets,” said Marc-André O’Rourke, executive director, NACC. “This new agreement will create opportunities to further develop air services between the two countries while boosting trade, investment and tourism.” The new rights under this expanded agreement are expected to be available for use by airlines in the coming weeks.

London has retained its position as the top-ranked international travel destination for the fifth time in seven years, according to the annual MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index released on June 3, 2015. Driven by insights into travel patterns, the Global Destinations Cities Index provides a ranking of the 132 most visited cities around the world. More than just a travel tracker, the Index delivers deeper understanding of how people move around the world and speaks to the importance and prominence of the world’s cities as homes, destinations and engines of growth. According to the study, London is projected to receive 18.82-million international visitors in 2015, just slightly ahead of second-ranked Bangkok at 18.24-million visitors. The two cities have topped the Index throughout its history. Forecasted overnight visitors to the rest of the top 10 cities include: • Paris—16.06 million • Dubai—14.26 million • Istanbul—12.56 million visitors • New York—12.27 million • Singapore—11.88 million • Kuala Lumpur—11.12 million • Seoul—10.35 million • Hong Kong—8.66 million In 2015, it is expected that nearly 383-million overnight trips will be made by international visitors between the Index’s 132 cities, representing a massive demand for goods, services and experiences as they spend at total of US$360-billion during their visits. According to the UN report on World Urbanization Prospects,

two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050. By forecasting the number of international overnight travellers, the Global Destination Cities Index shows the infrastructure needed to meet the expectations of both locals and visitors. Destination Cities: Spotting the Trends Across the globe, a few key trends from the Index stand out, including: • Asia/Pacific—The region is home to three of the top four fastest-growing destination cities between 2009 and 2015—Colombo, Sri Lanka; Chengdu , China; and Osaka, Japan. • Europe—Istanbul is the most diversified destination, with 50 per cent of its international overnight visitors coming from 33 feeder cities. • Latin America—Lima, Peru is both the top destination and the fastest-growing city in the region, featuring almost 50 per cent more international overnight visitors than second-ranked Mexico City. • Middle East and Africa— Dubai continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the global top 10, while Abu Dhabi is the third fastestgrowing destination city overall between 2009 and 2015. • North America—Houston is the fastest growing in North America since 2009 and is the only destination city in North America with doubledigit growth. The MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities ranks cities in terms of the number of their total international over-

World’s first UFO Hotel to land in California The first UFO Hotel is no longer just a fantasy. The $30-million project in Baker, California, which is being spearheaded by “charismatic visionary” Luis Ramallo, will feature 31 rooms on two floors designed within a full-scale alien spacecraft where guests can spend the night in alien-themed rooms and dine in an alien-themed restaurant. “We are tremendously excited about developing the first authentic UFO Hotel in the world, not just in America,” said Ramallo. “There are tens of millions of Sci-Fi and UFO fans in the world who have been dreaming of a venue just like this. They will finally have it.” The UFO Hotel, which is in pre-construction development, will have an alien-themed lobby, spa, nightclub and other attractions, such as sci-fi fanatics and guests getting married in alien costumes—on their favourite planet, of course. “It will be out of this world,” said Ramallo. “When you enter the hotel, you will feel as if you’ve been transported to an actual spaceship.” Having already invested major funding into the project, Ramallo is seeking additional fundraising through investors and Kickstarter. He believes scifi fans globally will each kick in contributions to help fund what will be one the world’s most unique hotels and may rank among the biggest Kickstarter campaigns in history. The crowd

funding campaign provides backers with a wide choice of UFO Hotel exclusive contribution rewards from $1 to $10,000. Room rates at the UFO Hotel will be competitively priced, beginning at around $300 a night—“an incredible bargain for a one-of-a-kind experience,” said Ramallo. Alien-uniformed employees will use modern touch-screen technology to check guests in. Monitors will show scenes of activity from throughout the spaceship. As guests walk to their rooms, they will be able to twist various dials and hatch handles. If they turn the wrong one, a warning light and siren will flash. There will also be unique photo-ops throughout the spacecraft with alien crew members re-charging themselves in pods. Ramallo came to America 27 years ago from Argentina with $100. He soon created Alien Fresh Jerky near the infamous Area 51 in Nevada, where the intense secrecy of the U.S. Air Force base made the area a frequent subject of UFO folklore. The UFO Hotel is expected to bring this desert town of approximately 650 back to life. “It’s going to breathe new life into this town,” said Jacob Overson, general manager of the Baker Community Services. “It’s going to put Baker back on the map again. It will be a true tourist destination.”

Did You Know? The term UFO (unindentified flying object) was officially created in 1953 by the United States Air Force (USAF). In its initial definition, the USAF stated that a UFO was “any airborne object which by performance, aerodynamic characteristics, or unusual features, does not conform to any presently known aircraft or missile type, or which cannot be positively identified as a familiar object.”

City of Richmond seeks partners in carbon marketplace The City of Richmond plans to establish a carbon marketplace to help achieve corporate and community goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, through the launch of a pilot program. This locally based carbon marketplace will be the first of its kind on B.C.’s mainland. A recognition and awards program is also planned to be part of this pilot program. Through the voluntary signing of the BC Climate Change Action Charter in 2008, the City of Richmond committed to becoming carbon neutral in its corporate operations. It achieved carbon neutral status in its corporate operations in 2013 and expects to have achieved carbon neutral status in 2014. Current projections are that the Richmond will maintain its carbon neutral status in 2015 and 2016, as a result of surplus carbon credits acquired from the expansion of its organics diversion pro-

gram, participation in a project to optimize methane capture and the Vancouver landfill and other initiatives. However, over the longer term it is anticipated that Richmond will need to acquire additional carbon credits in order to remain carbon neutral. The City of Richmond is seeking expressions of interest from businesses, organizations or individuals planning projects that would result in reductions of GHG emissions. The projects could be eligible for funding from the City to purchase carbon credits associated with the completed project. Examples of qualifying projects include energy-efficient building retrofits, fleet fuel switching or solar thermal installations for hot water heating. Interested parties can find details on carbon marketplace expression of interest at energy.richmond.ca/richmond-carbon-marketplace-pilot-program or on the City of Richmond and BidBC websites, Expressions of Interest #5475.

Aeromexico, Mexico’s flag carrier, will begin new daily non-stop service between YVR and Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) in Mexico City on December 9, 2015. The airline will operate a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with seat capacity for 124 passengers including 12 in Class Premier, Aeromexico’s Business Class cabin. “Aeromexico’s decision to fly to YVR further strengthens our position as the gateway hub between Asia and the Americas,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The new service will give businesses more options to reach customers in Mexico and throughout Latin America.” The new service will add 160 jobs to the B.C. economy and $9.9-million in Gross Domestic Product, $3.4-million in taxes and $2.9-million in wages to the province.

It will also provide opportunities for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America. “Air connections between Mexico and Canada are essential to the growing mobility of citizens between both countries; the new Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Vancouver will foster tourism, business and student travel in both directions,” said Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver. “Furthermore, competitive prices will enable Mexico’s global airline to tap

into growing demand.” Aeromexico offers connectivity to 45 destinations within Mexico and 16 destinations in Latin America. Flight AM696 will leave MEX daily at 6pm, arriving at YVR at 10:05pm the same day. Flight AM697 will leave YVR at 11:20pm, arriving at MEX at 7am the following day. Record-setting sixth Skytrax Best Airport win

Skytrak Thank You Friday was a celebration of YVR’s sixth consecutive year of maintaining its #1 ranking as Best Airport in North America.

Last Month, YVR celebrated its record-setting sixth consecutive Skytrax win for Best Airport in North America with an in-terminal thank-you celebration. YVR team members, with the help of 55 employees from 11 organizations handed out 3,000 chocolate airplane lollipops, 2,500 YVR chocolates, 3,000 YVR lollipops and thousands of thank-you postcards to

YVR employees, passengers, partners and community members. Thank-you squads were deployed airside and in-terminal. The airplane lollipops, all of which were distributed by lunchtime, proved to be a hot commodity. The Airport Authority expressed thanks to everyone who participated in the celebration and to the 24,000 people who work and volunteer at YVR.

Answer: ATR 72

The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop short-haul regional airliner built by the French-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR.
