Vancouver Airport Authority recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation with Shanghai Airport Authority, which is designed to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations and jointly develop air services, cultural exchanges and business opportunities. “We are very excited about this agreement with Shanghai Airport Authority,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO,
Vancouver Airport Authority. “YVR is continuing to make strong progress towards better serving the Chinese market and close partnerships with world class organizations like Shanghai Airport Authority to ensure that we grow and strengthen Vancouver’s air connections between Asia and the Americas.” The cooperation agreement will encourage both organizations to share knowledge and learn from one another. YVR and Shanghai “By serving in its role as an international passenger and cargo transit hub, China’s gateway, and an express transfer centre, Pudong International Airport is well-equipped to help drive Shanghai to become one of the most competitive air cargo markets in the Asia Pacific region, thanks to its excellent facilities and optimized Customs clearance and operating procedures,” said Jing Yiming.

In February 2015, both organizations undertook a study to stimulate the cold supply chain for perishable goods. The Memorandum of Understanding signed last month builds on this partnership, further improving each organization’s overall aviation business. It also strengthens a growing collaboration between Canada and China, and opens up new business opportunities for both sides.
Vancouver Airport Authority’s commitment to building a sustainable gateway hub is apparent through these signed agreements. YVR remains the only North American airport served by four mainland Chinese carriers. Its strong linkages with China, which total 70 flights per week during the summer, gained another key destination last month as China Eastern Airlines began direct service from YVR
to Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) via Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). Vancouver is the first North American destination from Kunming, Yunnan—one of China’s premier tourism regions—and a key gateway destination. Depending on configuration, Boeing’s Dreamliner can seat between 210 and 325 passengers. The aircraft is made with carbon-fibre composite materials and according to Boeing, it is quieter, lighter and 20 per cent more fuel efficient than similar-sized planes.
Already, Air Canada commits $2-billion worth of aircraft to the Pacific market each day and Brisbane is the third new Pacific route we have announced in the past year, after Toronto-Tokyo Haneda and Vancouver-Osaka.” Flights will be timed to optimize connectivity to and from Air Canada’s extensive North American network through the airline’s Vancouver hub, while also offering in Brisbane, connectivity across Australia. “We will be offering the only non-stop, year-round flights from Canada to Brisbane, a financial hub as well as a tourism gateway to Australia’s Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef, using our Boeing 787 Dreamliners,” said Rovinescu. “The operating economics of the Dreamliner together with the efforts of the Vancouver Airport Authority who [sic] have maintained airport operating costs at levels
among the lowest in Canada, have enabled us to grow our Vancouver hub.” Flights begin June 17, 2016, operating three times weekly with the carrier’s state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft featuring 20 International Business Class lie-flat seat suites, 21 Premium Economy and 210 Economy Class seats featuring upgraded in-flight entertainment at every seat throughout the aircraft. YVR Star shines on Jackie Early As YVR heads into its busy summer season, the airport’s customer care stars will be everywhere on Sea Island, working hard to ensure that each passenger and visitor to YVR has a safe and happy visit. Through the YVR Stars program, customer care efforts that go above and beyond are officially recognized, and each month the contribution of one exceptional YVR Star is celebrated in SkyTalk. This month’s YVR Star is Marquise customer service supervisor Jackie Early, who received several nominations. When several people go out of their way to send in nominations for the same person, there’s no doubt we have a true YVR Star in our midst. One customer’s nomination described the help that Early provided to her family when she suffered a medical emergency that included a hospital visit. When the family returned to the airport from the hospital, Early was there
to assist them with the flight rebooking process and later went out of her way to check on them before their flight. Another nomination described Early’s above-andbeyond assistance in reuniting him with a parcel of souvenirs that had been left a check-in counter. Yet another nomination recounted an incident in which Early not only found a traveller’s lost hiking stick, but she also shared with him her knowledge of hiking areas in Vancouver and money-saving tips for his holiday. From providing support in serious medical situations to reuniting customers with their beloved possessions, no customer service task is considered too big or too small for Jackie Early. “My team is truly my success,” said Early, when presented with a token of appreciation for her outstanding customer care. “It is thanks to them that I can do

ICAO bans e-cigarettes from checked baggage
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will no longer allow e-cigarettes and other battery-powered portable electronic smoking devices in checked baggage on airlines because of the risk of heating elements within them accidentally catching fire. ICAO first advised its member states of potential safety issues related to e-cigarettes in December 2014. At that time, the recommendation to airlines was that passengers be required to carry such devices in the air-
plane cabin and not in checked baggage. ICAO has now formally amended the rules governing the transportation of dangerous goods to prohibit both airline passengers and crew from carrying the devices in checked baggage. The change also prohibits recharging the devices in aircraft cabins. Canadian airlines, such as WestJet and Air Canada, already prohibit passengers from carrying e-cigarettes in checked baggage as well as on board usage.

Car sharing a growing trend that supports YVR’s sustainability model
The newest addition to YVR’s car-sharing pool of companies is Zipcar, a subsidiary of Avis Budget Group.
Looking to quickly hop in to a vehicle and hit the road upon arrival at YVR? In addition to traditional car rental companies located at YVR, there are also a number of car share options now available, including the newest arrival, Zipcar. Here is a rundown of the car share options available at YVR. Go2gether Vancouver Airport Authority partnered with go2gether to introduce a new real-time web application that provides an automated carpool matching service for Sea Island employees. The web application offers a green solution to manage long-term parking and infrastructure costs, while providing transportation alternatives to a growing population on Sea Island. To register for go2gether or for more information, visit go2gether.ca. Zipcar New to the YVR family, Zipcar is partnered with Avis rental car and conveniently offers on-site car sharing at YVR. Located in the lower level of the
parkade, Zipcar is a membershipbased model that charges a flat fee with its yearly membership. Zipcar members simply scan the windshield of their vehicle of choice, drive off and return it to the same parking spot when finished. YVR has two Zipcars—a Toyota Corolla named Volume, and a Hyundai Tucson SUV named Paris. Rates start at $10 per hour or $79 per day. Gas, insurance and 200-kilometre distances are included with each reservation. Car2Go Car2Go was also introduced recently as an option for travellers at YVR. Located just off site at the Pacific Gateway Hotel (accessible via free shuttle), Car2Go is also a user-accessed, membership-based carsharing service that exclusively offers its recognizable Smart Fortwo vehicles. For more information, visit car2go.com. Evo Evo also has a pick-up-dropoff location just over at Park-NFly off Miller Road near YVR
that is accessible via free shuttle to and from the main terminal building. Its fleet consists of Toyota Prius Hybrids that have seating for five and a roof rack for skiis or bikes. Much like Zipcar and Car2Go, Evo is membership-based with windshield user access. Hop in, take a spin and return to an approved parking space when you are all finished. Visit evo.ca for more information. Car sharing is a growing part of modern transportation that supports YVR’s efforts to be a sustainable airport. Community Traffic management plan for new Sea Island Designer Outlet
Sea Island’s long-awaited shopping destination, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport, opened on July 9. Located near the Canada Line Templeton Station, the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet features the best European and North American luxury, premium and lifestyle brands at year-round savings of up to 70 per cent. With the opening, an increase of vehicle traffic to Sea Island is anticipated, particularly over the first several weekends of operation, as both passengers and regional shoppers visit the Designer Outlet Centre (Thursdays to Sundays, during store hours). To prepare, the Vancouver Airport Authority has developed
a comprehensive transportation plan to address additional vehicle traffic, limit impacts to airport operations and maintain the safety of all visitors and employees. The plan includes alternate routes, additional parking locations and the use of shuttles. Shoppers can help by following these tips: • Take the Canada Line and maximize your shopping time. Ride the train from Richmond or Vancouver to Templeton Station, a four-minute walk from the Designer Outlet Centre. Encourage your friends and family to do the same. • Expect limited parking at the Designer Outlet Centre, par-
ticularly during the first few weekends of operation. • If you are driving, anticipate extra congestion on main roadways to YVR from Vancouver and Richmond, and leave extra time—particularly during peak weekend days. • Please observe posted signage, and follow all driving and parking instructions provided by traffic management personnel around the Centre. Hours of operation: • Monday – Saturday: 10am – 9pm • Sunday: 10am - 7 pm For more information about McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport, visit mcarthurglenvancouver.com.

YVR asks for washroom ideas, promises to flush bad ones YVR’s Washroom Commit– tee is on the lookout for ideas on how to build the world’s best washroom and has launched a contest that aims to solicit ideas from the travelling public on sustainable, innovative and accessibility features and amenities they would like to see included in the washrooms at YVR. “YVR was proud to have been considered for Canada’s Best Restroom in 2014,” said Don Ehrenholz, vice president engineering, Vancouver Airport Authority. “One might think after receiving such lofty praise for our loos that we would be content to rest on our laurels, but at YVR we are always aiming to improve, and that includes our washrooms.” Since travellers from around the world pass through the airport, at some point they will have seen a bathroom feature elsewhere that they might like implemented at YVR. “We want to hear all their ideas,” said Ehrenholz. YVR’s Washroom Committee has worked together to ensure consistent features in all upgraded washrooms throughout the airport in order to maximize use and accessibility. Features include

YVR is expecting its busiest-ever summer travel season. To help ensure a comfortable experience, the following tips are offered for passengers travelling through the airport between June 15 and September 7 (Labour Day). • Confirm travel details in advance. • Confirm reservations with your airline and determine baggage specifications and food and entertainment options available on-board days before your departure. • When packing, remember that restrictions continue to apply for liquids, gels and aerosols—including sunscreen—in carry-on baggage. • A complete list of items not permitted in carry-on baggage is available through the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) at catsa.gc.ca. • Visit yvr.ca from your home, office or mobile device to check-in online for most major airlines serving YVR. • Print your boarding pass before you leave for the airport, or have it emailed to your handheld mobile device. • Bring proper documentation for your flight. All the latest
information on ID requirements is available on yvr.ca. • Travel to YVR on the Canada Line is quick and efficient, delivering you right to the terminal door. • If you are driving to the airport, have a parking plan. jetSet offers the lowest onairport parking rates and can be booked online in advance at jetsetparking.com. • To help the airport manage extra passengers and baggage most efficiently during the busy summer season, please arrive at the recommended time for your flight. This is typically 90 minutes before a domestic flight and two hours before an international flight. • Questions? Keep an eye out for YVR’s friendly team of Green Coat volunteers, stationed throughout the terminal. • Made it through security with time to spare? Pick up some last-minute summer travel essentials, or start your holiday early with a snack or meal from one of YVR’s great restaurants—packed to go with YVR’s Carry On Food. Harbour Air Seaplanes named 2015 Clear Skies Award winner Last month, during Canadian Environment Week, Sea Islandbased Harbour Air Seaplanes was named winner of the 2015 Clear Skies Award by Vancouver Airport Authority. The Clear Skies Awards is YVR’s annual environmental awards program, designed to recognize Sea Island businesses that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, improving its environmental footprint through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, portable water consumption and waste or improving the ecosystem on Sea Island. Harbour Air has demonstrated its environmental responsibility for seaplanes and aviation around the world for more than 30 years. In 2011, it became the first airline in North America to achieve
complete carbon neutrality in both flight service and corporate operations. To date, the airline has offset close to 60,000 tonnes of carbon, an equivalent of taking approximately 12,600 cars off the road. Harbour Air also implemented a ticketless airline system where travel confirmations are sent by email and re-usable boarding passes are utilized. Harbour Air’s commitment to Sea Island’s ecosystem includes participating in City of Richmond’s Partners for Beautification, a program focused at educating and empowering volunteers to clean up the Fraser River. Congratulations, Harbour Air!
Michael O’Brien, Vancouver Airport Authority corporate secretary and VP of strategic planning, legal services and environment, presents Meredith Moll, Harbour Air Group vice president sales and marketing, with the 2015 Clear Skies Award.

Aviation safety partners, Vancouver Airport Authority, Transport Canada and the RCMP, have teamed up to raise awareness about the dangers of laser use.
Vancouver Airport Authority, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Transport Canada recently joined forces to address the growing concern of laser use in the Lower Mainland. In alignment with a national campaign by Transport Canada, the Airport Authority and RCMP are spending the summer educating the public on the dangers of lasers pointed at aircraft and how to report any such incidents. “Handheld lasers are not a toy and pose a real credible threat to aviation safety,” said Sergeant Cam Kowalski, Richmond RCMP. “Police across the country give laser attacks on aircraft top priority for operational responses. Suspects who choose to target aircraft with lasers show a care-
less and wanton disregard for the safety of the pilots, passengers and the communities surrounding airports. Those caught will be prosecuted according to both federal and provincial acts and will be subject to substantial fines and jail time.” YVR Flight Crew will distribute materials at summer community festivals to educate the public on the dangers of laser use. Social media outreach will also be used to raise awareness. Transport Canada’s national campaign to address laser awareness will focus on the Lower Mainland as one of its key communities. A full run-through of its campaign outreach is available at tc.gc.ca/notabrightidea. “It should be a no brainer that pointing lasers at any part
of an aircraft is dangerous,” said The Honourable Minister of State (Seniors). “This awareness campaign will help Canadians better understand the serious risks and consequences of pointing a laser at an airplane. By working closely with our partners, we can help to reduce the number of incidents at Canada’s airports.” In 2014, Transport Canada recorded 502 laser strikes nationwide, a 43 per cent increase in two years. In the same year, B.C. recorded 80 strikes, roughly 10 per cent more than the previous year—with 52 occurring at YVR. Anyone who witnesses a laser strike on an aircraft should report it to 911. Isla Nublar, the dinosaurteeming land from the Jurassic Park series of films, may only exist on the silver screen, but its exotic charm and wonder are a reality in the Hawaiian Islands. Since the series first movie debuted in 1993, the islands of Oahu and Kauai have served as the key locations to bring the prehistoric creatures to life, and this summer’s box office record-setting fourth installment, Jurassic World, is no exception. With two-thirds of the Hawaii location days for the movie spent on Oahu, visitors can now have a true Jurassic moment with a selection of experiences that bring the movie to life. In addition to the Jurassic Park series, Oahu has served as the location for numerous TV and movie projects including The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Godzilla, Battleship, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Soul Surfer, Big Eyes, Hawaii Five-0, Lost, the Oscar-winning film The Descendants and director Cameron Crowe’s newly released Aloha. Jurassic experiences on Oahu Known as “Hawaii’s Movie Ranch,” the landscape of Kualoa Ranch has long made it a favourite, and the area was featured extensively in Jurassic World. Visitors who really want a sense of being in the land of the Jurassic can tour Kaaawa Valley by ATV, horseback or bus via the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour. kualoa.com Movie-goers may recall the dinosaur petting zoo in Jurassic World, which was shot at the Honolulu Zoo. Centrally and conveniently located in Waikiki, the Honolulu Zoo is the home to 905 different animals from the tropics including komodo dragons, primates, birds, reptiles, amphibians and a variety of African animals. honoluluzoo.org Some of the main hotel interiors from Jurassic World are the

In reality, the pier is home to the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, but also serves as a nice stopping point on a scenic drive through the southeast corner of Oahu. While in the area, visitors should be sure to take in the views Makapuu beach and explore the Makapuu Lighthouse hike. Some of Windward Oahu’s jungle-like scenery were immortalized in the movie, and fans can take in a similar landscape at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden. Rightfully named “a peaceful refuge,” Hoomaluhia is blanketed in exotic flora from the Philippines, Malaysia, Tropical America, Melanesia, Hawaii, Polynesia, Africa, India and Sri Lanka. Spend a day there hiking, try your hand at catch and release fishing in the pond, or apply for a campsite to spend the evening. honolulu.gov/parks/hbg.html Step back in time to a place steeped in 700 years of Native Hawaiian history at Waimea Valley. Boeing donates original flight-test Dreamliner to Nagoya, Japan
Boeing ZA001 Dreamliner, one of three original flight-test 787s, lands in Nagoya, Japan, where it will be placed on static display.
Earlier this month, more than 100 Japanese government officials and leaders from Boeing and its supplier partners joined in celebrating Boeing’s donation of its 787 Dreamliner ZA001 to Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) in Nagoya, Japan, where it will be placed on static display. “Centrair has been a wonderful partner from the start of the 787 journey,” said George Maffeo, president Boeing Japan.
“Without the vision, flexibility and teamwork of former CEO Kawakami and now CEO Tomozoe, we could not have built our Dreamlifter-based production system to achieve our production goals for the 787. Centrair literally gave flight to the Dreamliner’s wings. What more fitting place could ZA001 come to rest.” ZA001 touched down on its last flight on Monday, June 22, 2015 at Chubu Centrair
International Airport in Nagoya, Japan. ZA001 is the third of three original flight-test 787s that Boeing is sharing with museums around the world to inspire future generations, communities and airplane enthusiasts. ZA002 and ZA003 already are on display at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona (pimaair.org), and the Museum of Flight in Seattle (museumofflight.org), respectively.
Air Transat voted North America’s Best Leisure Airline For the fourth consecutive year Air Transat has been voted the Best North American Leisure Airline by the Skytrax World Airline Awards. Travellers from across the globe take part in the world’s largest airline passenger satisfaction survey every year to pick the winners. “We are extremely honoured to receive this international award for the fourth year in a row,” said Jean-François Lemay, general Manager, Air Transat. “Thanks to the exceptional work of its employees that are constantly
evolving in an industry fraught with challenges, Air Transat has shown itself to be a leader in the global airline industry. The fact that passengers themselves recognize that fact is very gratifying for us.” The World Airline Awards began in 1999 when Skytrax launched its first global, airline passenger satisfaction survey. The 2015 survey covered 245 airlines and attracted nearly 19-million airline passengers worldwide who voted on everything from check-in and boarding to seat
comfort and staff service. In addition to its international win, Air Transat was recently voted the best Charter Airline by the 16th annual Agents’ Choice Awards, conducted by Canadian Travel Press, Travel Courier, and TravelPress.com, for the eight consecutive year. Canada’s third largest airline, Air Transat carries some three-million passengers every year to nearly 60 destinations in 30 countries aboard its fleet of Boeing narrow-body and Airbus wide-body jets.

The airline will operate a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with seat capacity for 124 passengers including 12 in Class Premier, Aeromexico’s Business Class cabin. “Aeromexico’s decision to fly to YVR further strengthens our position as the gateway hub between Asia and the Americas,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The new service will give businesses more options to reach customers in Mexico and throughout Latin America.” The new service will add 160 jobs to the B.C. economy and $9.9-million in Gross Domestic Product, $3.4-million in taxes and $2.9-million in wages to the province.
It will also provide opportunities for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America. “Air connections between Mexico and Canada are essential to the growing mobility of citizens between both countries; the new Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Vancouver will foster tourism, business and student travel in both directions,” said Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver. “Furthermore, competitive prices will enable Mexico’s global airline to tap

YVR employees, passengers, partners and community members. Thank-you squads were deployed airside and in-terminal.
