Sea Island road and sidewalk improvement projects Starting later this month to early September, Vancouver Airport Authority will begin repaving Miller Road, between the airport terminal and Moray Bridge; and eastbound lanes on Grant McConachie Way, between Templeton Street to Arthur Laing Bridge. This repaving project is expected to take approximately 12 weeks to complete. Starting early September 2015, Vancouver Airport Authority will also begin replacing the sidewalk on Level 1, Domestic Terminal Building. This project will be completed in three phases to minimize impact to operations and is expected to take six weeks to complete.
These construction projects are part of Vancouver Airport Authority’s comprehensive and coordinated strategy to rehabilitate and upgrade infrastructure for both current and future needs. Vehicle traffic will remain open at all times but minor impacts to traffic are expected, including reduced speed limits and lane closure to ensure a safe work environment. Air Canada has received its first Boeing 787-9, a larger version of the Dreamliner 787-8 already in its fleet. The Dreamliner is the world’s most modern commercial aircraft and the larger 787-9 version’s greater range and capacity will allow Air Canada to expand its international network. The airline’s first designated routes for the Boeing 787-9 are non-stop services from Toronto to Delhi beginning November 1, 2015 and to Dubai beginning November 3, 2015. In the interim, customers will have the opportunity to preview the new aircraft on select flights between Toronto and Vancouver this month. Future deployments of the 787-9 Dreamliner will be announced as new aircraft enter service.
Air Canada took delivery of its first Dreamliner in May 2014 and will receive a total of 29 new 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft by 2019, in addition to eight 787-8 aircraft already in operation. All Dreamliners will feature Air Canada’s redesigned interiors in a three-cabin configuration, including International Business with fully lie-flat seats, Premium Economy and Economy. Air Canada’s next generation seatback in-flight entertainment system will be available throughout. The Boeing 787-9 will seat 298 passengers and have a range of 15,372 kilometres, compared with the Boeing 787-8, which is configured to carry 251 passengers with a range of 14,500 kilometres. Latest expansion to Canada’s China Transit Program welcomed at YVR The latest expansion to Canada’s China Transit Program (CTP), announced by the Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada on July 30, 2015, has been welcomed at YVR. Effective immediately, five Chinese cities have been added to the list of approved Asian cities from which Chinese nationals can travel to YVR en route to the U.S. without requiring a Canadian visa. The addition of Xiamen, Fuzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Harbin more than doubles the number of mainland Chinese cities in the program and comes just months after Minister Alexander expanded the program to include Tokyo and Seoul in May 2015. Spearheaded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Minister Alexander worked closely with Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney to develop a system that would be economically beneficial for Canada while continuing to protect its borders. Under Minister Blaney’s leadership, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) expedited the risk assessment of each of the five cities, helping accelerate the program’s expansion. Eligibility criteria and the list of participating cities are available on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. “[This] announcement delivers on the promise Minister Alexander made last May to further expand the program, her-
alding a tremendous opportunity for YVR to grow as a worldclass, sustainable connecting hub,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This is exactly the kind of decisive policy action that YVR needs to continue providing opportunities for travel and trade, creating jobs and driving dollars into our economy.” For more than 20 years, Vancouver Airport Authority has been working with its partners to expand visa-free transit progressively between Asia and the Americas through YVR. Combining passengers destined for Canada with transiting passengers bound for the U.S. makes new routes commercially viable, while contributing to British Columbia’s economy. The expanding CTP enables YVR to capitalize on its geographic advantage and continue to grow as North America’s preferred connecting hub. “The addition of Chengdu, Fuzhou, Harbin, Shenyang and Xiamen to the China Transit Program means even greater choice and flexibility for eligible Chinese travellers transiting through Canada, as well as new business opportunities for participating airlines and airports,” said Chris Alexander, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. “We deeply value our people-to-people ties with China and the expansion of the CTP is yet another example of our government’s commitment to this partnership.”

The Honourable Chris Alexander, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, announces the expansion of the China Transit Program at YVR.
Airlines currently participating in the program are: Air Canada, Air Canada rouge, Air China, WestJet, Cathay Pacific, Philippine Airlines, China Southern, Jazz Air, Sky Regional Airlines and Air Georgian. “With the addition of five
new cities to the China Transit Program, our government continues to demonstrate its commitment to facilitating legitimate trade and travel,“ said Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety. “This program will greatly support economic growth
by attracting more transit business to Canada and ensuring our airlines remain competitive in the global market.” Since 2009, YVR has worked closely with the Government of Canada to ensure the program’s success. In addition to the
ongoing support from Minister Alexander and Minster Blaney, the program has received critical support from the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Minister of Transport, who endorsed the announcement of the CTP’s expansion.

Hawkair president Jay Dilley was recently recognized by Wings magazine as a Top 20 Under 40. Each year, Wings magazine showcases 20 of the finest young minds in Canadian aviation and aerospace. The recognition comes two years after Dilley was named president of Hawkair in 2013. During that time, he launched the Women in Leadership Executive Development Program, designed
to increase the number of females in senior management and leadership roles and the first of its kind in the aviation industry. “I’ve been so fortunate to have been part of talented teams who have achieved the impossible countless times “said Dilley. “I’m extraordinarily humbled to have been chosen for such an honour.” Hawkair operates a fleet of four DeHavilland Dash-8 aircraft with seating capacity from 37 to 50 passengers. Its route network
includes Terrace-Kitimat, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Dawson Creek and Vancouver. “Jay brings a unique and strategic approach to the Hawkair team, and we congratulate him on this achievement,” said Douglas McCrea, president of Central Mountain Air and co-owner of Hawkair. Hawkair has received several awards from local chambers of commerce for its customer service.

Held on July 25, the 2015 Boundary Bay Airshow was a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. As one of the few remaining free-admission air shows, this event continues to appeal to people of all ages, attracting hundreds of attendees. Sponsored by the Corporation of Delta in partnership with Alpha Aviation, this year’s air show included children’s activities, delicious food options, displays of vintage and modern aircraft and exciting aerial acts. Shortly before noon, six vintage Harvard trainers staged a race over the airfield as a prelude to the show, aided by the Delta Concert Band playing “Tiger Rag.” This was followed by
the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team, the Skyhawks, who got the show under way by descending with Canadian and American flags from a Royal Canadian Air Force CC-138 Twin Otter from 440 Squadron in Yellowknife. The undisputed star of this year’s show was the Madras Maiden, a B-17G from the Erickson Aircraft Collection in Oregon. The Maiden was accompanied by a P-51 Mustang and a FW-190 Focke-Wulf from the same collection. The Historic Flight Foundation of Mukilteo, Washington brought “Grumpy,” a B-25D Mitchell in Royal Air Force colours, and a Grumman 8F8 Bearcat fighter.
Aerobatics were provided by Bud Granley and his son Ross in their Yak Duo, as well as “Super Dave” Mathieson and Jon Melby, who reprised their roles from Discovery Channel’s Airshow series. Another aspect of racing was introduced by Mathieson and Melby as the duo later engaged in a series of match races with exotic cars. Mathieson’s MX2 two-seat tandem sport aircraft defeated a McLaren, but Melby’s Pitts Special biplane was denied victory at the line in a match with a Ford GT. The show closed with another father and son duo, John and Richard Mrazek, in their Cold War Soviet-bloc jet trainers, L29 Delphins.
Crowds of people lined up to tour the B25D Mitchell “Grumpy”, an American twin-engine bomber manufactured by North American Aviation.

The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum just outside of Grande Prairie, Alberta, is set to open on September 26. Housed in a striking timber and zinc building with state-of-the-art exhibits, which include multimedia, augmented reality and Canada’s only National Geographic theatre, this dedicated paleontology museum has already been called one of the world’s Top 10 Projects to Follow by architecture magazine Azure.
Despite its grand opening being more than a month away, the museum has already begun offering a new option for visitors to experience Alberta’s dinosaur fossils—helicopter rides of the Pipestone Creek dinosaur bone bed west of Grande Prairie. The helicopter tours depart from the museum 19 kilometres west of Grande Prairie and run every 20 minutes throughout the day. The $195 tours showcase aerial views of the muse-
um, Pipestone Creek and Wapiti River. Passengers on the 15-minute tour listen to an audio track on iPads to learn about discoveries at the site, where there is an average of nearly 200 fossils per square metre. More than 3,000 bones have so far been recovered from the area. For more information on the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, visit dinomuseum. ca.

An imitation Arthurian Round Table hangs in the Great Hall in Winchester. The table was originally constructed in the 13th century and repainted in its present form for Henry VIII; around the edge of the table are the names of King Arthur’s knights. Photo: Martin Kraft.
A new sacred sites tour to England will examine not only the Holy Grail legend, an important theme in Arthurian literature, but also places associated with King Arthur, Lady Guinevere and Merlin. The King Arthur’s Avalon tour will be led by Phil Cousineau author of the international bestseller, The Art of Pilgrimage: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred. Highlights of the itinerary include excursions to Glastonbury, where a thorn tree is said to have grown from Joseph of Arimathea’s walking stick, and Cadbury Castle, associated with
King Arthur’s Camelot. There will be visits to West Camel, where King Arthur fought his last battle, Tintagel Castle, where legends say Arthur was born, the Great Hall in Winchester—with a version of Arthur’s Round Table—and Marlborough College, site of Merlin’s Grave. Also included in the May 8 - 18, 2016 program will be excursions to Stonehenge, Bath, Dartmoor, Salisbury Cathedral, St. Michael’s Mount, Westminster Abbey, the British Museum and Ye Olde Cheshire Inn, where Dr. Johnson and
Charles Dickens dined. The tour is offered by Vancouver’s Sacred Earth Journeys, which has offered spiritual travel tours since 2003. “This quest for the Holy Grail, as it was for the Knights of the Round Table, will be an inner journey as well as a physical excursion,” said Helen Tomei, president Sacred Earth Journeys. “Participants will literally walk along the same pathways as King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, Merlin, Joseph of Arimathea and the ancient Druids.” For more information, visit sacredearthjourneys.ca.

GBTA Foundation predicts Global Business Travel spending to hit record high in 2015 The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) has released its annual travel forecast, which details business travel spending in 75 countries across 48 industries over 15 years, including a rolling five-year projection. According to the forecast, China business travel will increase by 61 per cent over the next five years, from $261-billion in 2014 to $420-billion in 2019. That increase is greater than the increases in business travel growth in the next eight largest countries combined, including the U.S., Germany, India, U.K., Indonesia, France, Turkey and Japan. Overall, the GBTA BTI Outlook – Annual Global Report & Forecast, sponsored by Visa, finds that global business travel spending will hit a record US$1.25-trillion in 2015—a 6.5 percent growth over 2014. Growth will remain strong
through 2019, with business travel projected to grow 6.9 per cent in 2016, 6 per cent in 2017, 6.4 per cent in 2018 and 5.8 per cent in 2019. “Despite recent economic speed bumps, China will pull away as the global leader in business travel over the next five years,” said GBTA executive director and COO Michael W. McCormick. “On the horizon, we’ve identified five nations that are also seeing extraordinary growth and could very well turn into the business travel markets of the future. Another market to watch is India, which is statistically where China was 15 years ago.” The GBTA Foundation identified the five newly emerging markets that will become the business travel markets of the future as Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland and Turkey.

Annual Summit Softball Slam raises funds for Hope for Kids charity The annual Summit Softball Slam, presented by Sea Island’s Summit Customs Brokers in support of the Hope for Kids charity, took place on July 18 & 19 at Richmond’s King George Park. The Hope for Kids charity was founded in 2005 as Rubina Hope for Kids in memory of Rubina Wong, who died during the SE Asia tsunami. Once the initial goal of raising enough funds to build a daycare in Thailand was achieved, the charity began holding yearly events, with all proceeds benefitting children in local communities. The Summit Softball Slam is a major fundraising event for the charity. At this year’s 8th annual event, 10 teams took to the field to vie for top honours. The NW Blues team reclaimed the ‘A’ Division title,
after having been dethroned in 2014 by the Delta Mayhem team. CDS/Last Call team claimed top spot in ‘B’ Division, while the Sheraton Vancouver Airport team claimed the Most Sportsmanlike title. Hundreds attended this popular annual event, making the Hope for Kids charity the big winner, with $17,000 raised. “Once again, I give a big thank-you to all participants, sponsors and volunteers for making this event a success,” said Gary Eng, general manager Summit Customs Brokers and a member of the charity’s Board of Directors. “Since the completion of The Lam Gaen Kids Safe Zone Daycare in Thailand, the Hope for Kids charity has supported more than 15 organizations.” For more information, visit hopeforkids.ca.

Designated areas for remote control aircraft and power kiters On July 27, 2015, Richmond City Council amended its Public Parks and School Grounds Regulation Bylaw regarding the use of model aircraft in Richmond parks and the development of a permit system for power kiters. Under the new bylaws use of remote model aircraft and power kiting will be permitted only in designated areas within public parks in order to ensure public safety. After working with local enthusiasts from the Richmond RC Flyers Club, Manoah Steves Park was selected for model aircraft use due to its size, location and the support of the school district and local residents. The City previously designated the Model Airplane Park on Rice Mill Road for use by fixed-line model aircraft and that use will continue. The use of Manoah Steves Park will be open to model aircraft and does not extend to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Unlike model aircraft, UAVs are capable of being flown autonomously (without continuous human control) using GPS or an on-board camera. They can be flown beyond the pilot’s line of sight to complete a route.

Transport Canada guidelines state that UAVs should not be flown within nine kilometres of an airport. UAV technology has significant potential to be used in parks for filming and research purposes and the new parks bylaw does allow for properly trained and Transport Canada permitted UAV operators to work in parks under the City’s direction. With Council’s endorsement, power kiters will remain part of the landscape at Garry Point Park. Richmond city staff will continue to work with Transport Canada, NAV Canada and YVR to ensure that these activities pose no impact to aviation safety.
