Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) Autism Outreach program, in partnership with Canucks Autism Network (CAN), will now offer educational materials, how-to videos and travel kits to assist families and individuals living with autism. “Many people are not aware of the difficulties people living with autism may face,” said Jenny Duncan, manager, community relations, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This new program provides YVR’s guests and employees an opportunity to learn more about autism and better anticipate the challenging situations and assist accordingly.” The resource kits include an “I CAN Fly with YVR” stepby-step storybook and checklist, which aim to teach the airport routine to first-time travellers living with autism. The kit also includes a tips sheet and airport map, which highlight the various steps that need to be completed. A step-by-step travel video series is also available for passengers to watch before

arriving at YVR. In 2014, 28 families living with autism participated in the first annual YVR Accessibility Tour for Autism. YVR, in partnership with Canucks Autism Network (CAN), Air Transat and Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority (CATSA), hosted a pre-flight boarding rehearsal. Families were able to practice arriving at the airport, checking in, going through security and boarding an aircraft.

In 2015, YVR sponsored the Canucks Autism Family Festival. At the event, YVR screened its video series and asked for feedback from approximately 1,500 attendees. The resource kits are now available at all pre-security YVR Information Counters. The step-by step video series and the resources kits are also available at YVR.ca/accessibility. The Canadian government has recently updated its entry requirements for travellers to Canada arriving by air. Requirements for entry to Canada by land or sea remain unchanged. Beginning March 15, 2016, foreign national visitors without visas will need an Electronic Travel Authorization, or eTA, to enter Canada. This new entry requirement does not apply to U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid visa. Applying for an eTA online is straightforward and inexpensive. Eligible travellers need their passport, a

ANA launched the Star Wars Project in April 2015 after signing a five-year promotion license contract for the Star Wars brand with The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd. As part of the agreement, the ANA Star Wars planes will also display in-flight decorations, such as headrest covers and paper napkins and cups featuring Star Wars characters—more details will be announced

at a later date. The ANA-Walt Disney partnership also means the airline will be exclusive in offering all six of the currently released Star Wars films as part of its extensive in-flight entertainment options on international routes. This will be the first time any of the Star Wars movies have been included as part of an in-flight entertainment system.

In November 2015, the Star Wars ANA Jet will fly domestic Japanese routes and in March 2016 the BB-8 ANA Jet is scheduled to start serving international routes, principally between Japan and North America (exact routes have yet to be announced). Schedules for ANA’s Star Warsthemed aircraft can be viewed at ana-sw. com.

Dana Priolo (left), customer relations representative Vancouver Airport Authority, presented Marquise employee David Cummings with a token of appreciation for being a YVR Star.

YVR’s busiest season is underway and airport staff are focused on ensuring passengers’ trips are memorable and happy. Each month, customer care efforts that go above and beyond to maintain exceptional passenger service are recognized through Vancouver International Airport’s YVR Stars program. This month’s YVR Star is David Cummings, a Marquise customer service day shift housekeeper who notices the little things. Cummings recently helped

a distressed customer locate a missing wedding ring—just days before the passenger’s 46th anniversary. After receiving a request through YVR’s Lost and Found to be on the lookout for the ring, Cummings miraculously found it at the bottom of a washroom garbage bin. The customer was thrilled to have his ring back and sent an email to acknowledge Cummings’ actions, commending him for his honesty and integrity. When presented with a token

of appreciation, Cummings humbly said “I’m just doing my job.” Cummings is just one of the many employees at YVR who go above and beyond each month to create positive experiences for airport visitors. Have you witnessed great customer care in action at YVR? Then nominate a YVR Star. Submissions can be made online via email to yvrstars@yvr.ca, through Twitter at @yvrairport using the hashtag #YVRStars, or by filling out a ballot at any Information Counter in the terminal.

On August 27, 24 Canadian airports launched Canadian Airports Safety Week, the first program of its kind for the Canadian aviation industry.

During the last week of August, YVR, along with 23 airports across Canada, launched Canadian Airports Safety Week (CASW), an airport-led initiative to promote healthy and safe work practices among airport employees. Canadian Airports Safety Week (CASW) is the first program of its kind for the Canadian aviation industry. CASW reached thousands of airport employees across the country with safety talks and events that were developed in collaboration with participating airports. “Safety is the top priority at YVR every single day,” said Craig Richmond, president

and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The safety and security of our employees, our customers and our communities are paramount to YVR’s success and we are excited to be part of this national initiative helping to promote something so integral to the aviation industry.” The Airport Authority adheres to the highest health and safety standards, continuously working to improve the safety culture at YVR through risk management, safety upgrades and raising employee awareness of these issues. In 2014, the Airport Authority had zero health and safety non-compliances and suc-

cessfully completed a Certificate of Recognition Audit through WorkSafeBC. This certificate was achieved by implementing a safety management system and meeting a set of audit standards, thus ensuring regulatory compliance, due diligence and financial savings. During CASW, YVR hosted themed days that focused on hazard awareness, worker safety, security, airside vehicle operations and foreign object debris (FOD). Follow YVR’s Twitter account @yvrairport for a recap on daily events at YVR or #CASW2015 for results from airports across Canada.

Lost and Found at YVR aims for lasting positive experience

(Left to right) Shashi Pandit and Dawn Coates, YVR customer care representatives, at the Customer Service Counter/Lost and Found Centre, Level 3, International Departures.

Located at the Customer Service Counter on Departures Level 3 of the International Terminal, YVR’s Lost and Found department is a hub for misplaced teddy bears and electronics. Each year, more than 10,000 items are turned in, with 45 per cent of the items reunited to their owners globally. Any unclaimed items are generally kept for 60 days, after which time they are donated to the Vancouver Airport Chaplaincy’s (VAC) Thrift Store. Operated by volunteers, the VAC Thrift Store is an important source of funding for the Chaplaincy, which provides valuable support to travellers and the airport community. For many passengers, interaction with coordinators at YVR’s Lost and Found department has proved to be a positive customer experience. This feedback has

been recognized through the YVR Stars rewards program, which acknowledges exceptional customer service. If you find a lost item, please follow the Lost and Found procedures by turning the item into one of the YVR Customer Information counters. There, the item will be logged, tracked and held in safekeeping. If you are unsure about an item or cannot find a representative at the Customer Information Counter, please call YVR Operations at 604-207-7077. If you find a passport, please call YVR Operations 604-2077077, immediately. Lost items found on aircraft should be reported to the applicable airline. Unattended luggage or suspicious items should be reported to security at 604-207-7022.

Sea Island improvement projects update Vancouver International Airport Authority has begun its Sea Island improvement projects to ensure the continued safety of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. These projects include: • Grant McConachie Way eastbound lane repaving, between Templeton Street to Arthur Laing Bridge, taking place August 31-September 22 (Monday-Friday inclusive) between the hours of 7am to 11pm. • Miller Road repaving, between the airport ter-

minal and Cessna Drive, taking place September 23-November 12 (MondayFriday inclusive) between the hours of 7am to 11pm. • Sidewalk replacement, on Level 1, Domestic Terminal Building, taking place between August 31-September 28. In order to facilitate the work and maintain pedestrian access to the terminal for the sidewalk replacement, vehicle lanes will be reduced to one lane only. During construction, all shuttle drop off and pickups

will be relocated to the curb south of the crosswalk where Gateway Valet stages its operations. Gateway Valet has agreed to relocate its shuttle operations during construction. Flaggers and curbside operations attendants will be onsite during work hours to assist. These construction projects are part of a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to rehabilitate and upgrade YVR’s infrastructure for both current and future needs. Minimal noise impact to Sea Island residents is antici-

Community pated while these projects are in effect. Vehicle traffic will remain open at all times, but minor impacts to traffic are expected, so travellers are cautioned to leave some extra time to arrive at the airport. Vancouver Airport Auth– ority thanks the public for its patience as the work to improve the airport’s infrastructure and keep Sea Island roads safe and reliable continues. WestJet receives first of four 767-300 aircraft

WestJet has taken delivery of the first of four Boeing 767-300 extended range aircraft, which will be used for flights to Europe and other regions of the world on a non-stop basis, beginning this month. The four aircraft will arrive separately over the next eight months. WestJet’s first 767-300 will

fly between Toronto and Calgary over the next several months. Two more 767s will fly from Alberta to Hawaii and between Toronto and Montego Bay, Jamaica, beginning in December. The fourth and final aircraft, which features 262 seats and a flying range of about 11 hours, will arrive next spring to launch WestJet’s new service to London, England (Gatwick) in May 2016. Featuring a new teal and blue maple leaf-themed logo that will eventually appear on all WestJet aircraft, the airline’s 767s will include a Plus cabin with 24 premium seats in a two-by-two

configuration, hot meals and all of the other amenities associated with Plus. By next spring all four 767s will be equipped with WestJet Connect, the airline’s new inflight entertainment and wireless connectivity system. WestJet reported record earnings in its second quarter in late July 2015, thanks to falling fuel costs and a rising number of passengers. The airline earned a second-quarter profit of $61.6-million, up from $51.8-million in the same period last year, while revenue grew more than $12-million to $942-million.

B.C.’s Fraser River to be honoured at RiverFest

One of Metro Vancouver’s biggest celebrations, the annual RiverFest celebration will be held September 24-26, 2015.

In 1980, acclaimed river conservationist Mark Angelo, founded BC Rivers Day to highlight the value of rivers and encourage stewardship of the province’s many waterways. Originally a one-day shoreline cleanup among friends, this heartfelt effort soon escalated into an annual event. In 2005, World Rivers Day was officially endorsed by the United Nations for the world to come together, celebrate local rivers and keep them clean and safe. On September 24-26, in honour of the Fraser River and in celebration of BC and World Rivers Day, the Fraser River Discovery Centre will host RiverFest: Inspired by the Fraser. The Fraser River’s 1,375-kilometre length defines B.C.’s environ-

ment, economy, history, and even the province’s culture. RiverFest, presented by Port Metro Vancouver, will transform the New Westminster waterfront with a festival packed with school programs, artist and artisans’ displays, river tours, a variety of interactive environmental exhibits, delicious salmon samplers, fun-packed activities and crafts for everyone. In addition, the annual festival will include the famous Lucille Johnstone Work Boat Parade and a variety of young, emerging talented performers entertaining festival goers from the popular YVR Riverside Stage. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup has become Canada’s largest contributor to the International Coastal Cleanup, a global effort to remove harmful litter and aquatic debris from shorelines.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC) is one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada, working to promote understanding and education of shoreline litter issues by encouraging Canadians to rehabilitate shoreline areas through cleanups. In 2014, nearly 140,000 kilo-

grams of litter was removed from 2,500 kilometres of shorelines from across Canada. Join the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup kick-off event at Iona Regional Beach on Sea Island on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 10am to 1pm. T-shirts, gloves, garbage bags and pickers will be provided

to volunteers on-site. All participants will also receive a free lunch provided by Richmond Earls Kitchen + Bar. There will be free parking at Templeton Canada Line station with shuttle service to and from Iona Beach from 8:30am to 2pm. To register, please email community_relations@yvr.ca.

WFS Symposium to focus on the aviation industry’s financial health The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents some 260 airlines comprising 83 per cent of global air traffic, has announced that the second edition of the World Financial Symposium (WFS) will focus on industry efforts to support sustained aviation financial health. WFS will be held September 14-17, 2015 in Barcelona, Spain, against a backdrop of improving industry profitability. Airlines are expected to earn a net profit margin of four per cent, which will equate to a $29.3-billion net profit in 2015. “After many years of hard work and restructuring, the airline industry on average is finally earning its cost of capital,” said Tony Tyler IATA’s director general and CEO. “This is a signifi-

cant achievement but it needs to be put into perspective. Firstly, we must recognize that for any other industry, earning the cost of capital is not an extraordinary achievement, rather it is the minimum performance expected. So airlines will have to gener-

ate these ‘normal returns’ regularly to attract the $5-trillion of capital to support the doubling of demand expected over the next two decades. “And secondly, sustainable profitability needs to be widespread. Over half of the industry’s profit this year is expected to be generated in North America. Some airlines are doing very well. But for many, keeping revenues ahead of costs is still a real struggle where success is anything but guaranteed,” said Tyler. Tyler will retire as director general and CEO in June 2016, after serving five years in the position. Before joining IATA in 2011, Tyler was CEO of Cathay Pacific Airways in which capacity he also served on the IATA Board of Governors as its chairman.

Boeing-built satellite will create first global high-speed broadband network When the third Boeingbuilt Inmarsat-5 satellite, which is now in orbit, becomes fully operational later this year it will provide the technology and coverage necessary for worldwide high-speed broadband access. Inmarsat-5 F3 sent signals from space following its launch on August 28, 2015 on an International Launch Services Proton Breeze M launch vehicle. After reaching final orbit, the spacecraft will undergo testing and checkout before becoming operational. Each of the three Inmarsat-5

satellites use fixed narrow spot beams to deliver higher speeds through more compact terminals. Steerable beams direct additional capacity in real-time to where it’s needed to provide seamless, global broadband communications coverage to Inmarsat users worldwide on land, at sea and in the air. The first two Inmarsat-5 Global Xpress satellites were launched December 2013 and February 2015, respectively. A fourth Boeing-built Inmarsat-5 (F4) is scheduled for delivery in mid-2016. Uclulet fishing adventure includes eagles and whales Oak Bay Marine Group has added top-of-the range, eightmetre Kingfisher vessels to its fleet of nine vessels at Ucluelet’s Canadian Princess Resort on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Ideal for up to four people, the Kingfishers are specifically designed to operate in the offshore marine waters of B.C.’s remote, rugged West Coast and are outfitted with all the best technology to outwit fish. A recent visit to the Canadian

Kingfisher vessel outfitted with the latest fishing technology, including multi frequency depth sounders, chart plotters, VHF radios, radar and electric high-speed downriggers.

Princess Resort included a fishing trip on one of the Kingfishers. Our agent limited out his salmon catch (two) and also landed the catch of the day, a halibut of almost 15 kilograms and worth, if you’re counting, $490 at a fish shop. The other fishers also caught more salmon, as well as a 12 kilogram halibut—all on barbless hooks. All of which made the morning’s fishing a good investment. Rates start at $159 for a ride on Canadian Princess’ two deepsea Delta Cruisers, which can hold about a dozen anglers. A step up from the Delta Cruisers is the resort’s Boston Whaler Outrages, superb boats for two rods and a guide. In addition to salmon and halibut, eagles and whales are also

common on this rugged coast. Earlier in the morning, we were taken on a spin on one of the Delta Cruisers, lingering off Effingham Island and spotting an eagle’s nest high in a tree. Was this the same nest seen by Captain Cook and recorded in his log more than 200 years ago? Quite possibly, for eagle nests are used generation after generation. Since the eagles could be heard, a deckhand flourished a rock-cod landed during a spell of bottom fishing. As the eagle closed in, he threw the rock-cod into the sea. Eagles are not just deadly, they are smart. This one made several circuits to make sure the coast was clear before dropping his talons and making a fast approach to scoop up the fish just a few metres from our boat. Wow!

Back in Ucluelet’s wellprotected harbour, the Canadian Princess vessel has a cozy pub and restaurant, the latter serving excellent calamari. Only crew stay on the vessel these days, the clients enjoying luxurious accommodation at a handsome lodge shoreside. Oak Bay Marine Group uses Orca Air from Vancouver airport’s South Terminal for the scenic flight to nearby Tofino. Canadian Princess Fishing Lodge & Marine Adventures is owned by the Oak Bay Marine Group, whose other properties include Painter’s Lodge near Campbell River and April Point Resort & Spa on Quadra Island. World’s finest jet teams perform at 2015 Abbotsford Airshow Spectacular weather added to the fun for the thousands of aviation enthusiasts at the annual Abbotsford Airshow. Held annually on the second Friday, Saturday and Sunday in August, the 2015 event included the highly successful twilight show, held for the first time in 2014, with double the number of jet teams performing this year. The theme was Aces Warriors & Wingmen, with a return of the popular Canadian Forces Snowbirds flying act, celebrating their 45th year. Other warbirds on display and in the air included a Mosquito bomber, the Mk5 Spitfire, a P-51 Mustang and a flyby from the B-25 Mitchell

bomber “Grumpy”, accompanied by two Harvard trainers. Two new entrants to the show were the F-22 Raptor, the US Air Force’s newest fighter aircraft that boasts some of the greatest advances in fighter jet technology, and the Breitling Jet Team, based in Dijon, France, flying fast and powerful L-39 C Albatros aircraft that can reach speeds of up to 909 kilometres per hour. The air displays included a rapid-fire succession of figures that were perfectly calculated, mastered, synchronized and fine-tuned down to the smallest details, all of which demonstrated why the Abbotsford Airshow has been named one of the 10 best airshows in the world.

Technologies shaping the passenger experience

By Ryan Ghee – Future Travel Experience The passenger experience on the ground is increasingly being shaped by technological developments. From the moment of booking to the departures and arrivals experiences, new technologies are changing the way airports interact with passengers and simultaneously creating operational efficiencies. Here are some technologies that should be on every airport and airline’s radar. Biometric technology—in the form of facial, iris and fingerprint recognition—is now commonplace in many airports, ranging from immigration e-gates and automated passport control kiosks to exclusive fast-track lanes, and biometrics have now emerged as the most viable enabler of a single

Robotics is set to enable the next level of automation and some examples can already be found. Boeing has projected a demand in China for 6,330 new airplanes over the next 20 years, estimating the total value of those new airplanes at $950-billion. “Despite the current volatility in China’s financial market, we see strong growth in the country’s aviation sector over the long term,” said Randy Tinseth, vice

president of marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Over the next 20 years, China’s commercial airplane fleet will nearly triple: from 2,570 airplanes in 2014 to 7,210 airplanes in 2034, with more than 70 per cent of these deliveries accommodating growth.” As China becomes the

world’s largest domestic air travel market, Boeing is forecasting demand for 4,630 single-aisle airplanes through 2034. This sector is driven by growth in new carriers and low-cost airlines in developing and emerging markets, as well as continuous expansion in established airlines. Boeing forecasts that the widebody aircraft segment will require 1,510 new airplanes, led by small and medium widebody airplanes such as the 777-300ER (Extended Range), 777X and the 787 Dreamliner. Worldwide, Boeing projects investments of $5.6-trillion for 38,050 new commercial airplanes to be delivered during the next 20 years. Today, Boeing jets are the mainstay of China’s air travel and cargo system. More than 50 per cent of all the commercial jetliners operating in China are Boeing airplanes. More than 8,000 Boeing airplanes fly throughout the world with integrated China-built parts and assemblies. China has a component role on every current Boeing commercial airplane model—the Next-Generation 737, 747, 767, 777 and its newest, the 787 Dreamliner.

Air Canada rouge inaugurated its non-stop seasonal service to Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka, Japan from YVR on May 1, 2015. This service will operate up to five times weekly between Vancouver and Osaka for the peak summer travel period of May-October. This new route is the only non-stop flight between KIX and a Canadian airport and will continue to bolster YVR’s current service to Japan. Modern features meet classic design in 2016 Volkswagen Beetle When car lovers speak of the Volkswagen Beetle, the word “Classic” is often bandied about. During the 2015 model year, Volkswagen Canada delivered a real Beetle Classic, one that combined the best of the new with the most sought-after touches of the old. The Beetle Classic was a hit with consumers, its elegant look capturing the attention of modernists and traditionalists alike. Now it has company in the 2016 Beetle Classic Convertible. Powered by a 1.8-litre, turbocharged direct injection engine with 170 horsepower delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, the Classic Convertible is very well equipped. From its 17” “Heritage” alloy wheels to the rear spoiler, the look is a very classic one. Inside, fashionistas will delight in the unique, two-tone cloth and leatherette seats and colour-matched dash and door sills. The fully-automated, pow-

er-operated top can be raised and lowered in around 10 seconds at speeds up to 50 kilometres per hour and is now dyed a shade of “Sioux Brown” that perfectly contrasts the interior. The Classic Convertible is full of thoughtful touches, from the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel to the all-new “Discover Media” touchscreen infotainment system, with integrated navigation. This is from Volkswagen’s all-new-for-2016 radio lineup, and features “AppConnect” smartphone integration, which unlocks the world of Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link, delivering seamless connectivity and minimizing driver distraction. When it comes to the Classic Convertible, it’s all down to the look. A choice of four exterior shades, including Reflex Silver Metallic, Moonroock Silver Metallic, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl, will allow Canadians to personalize their car. There is

no need to tick off any option boxes on the order sheet, since all features are standard. The Beetle Classic Convertible is available now

Brake pads and rotors

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik

Old brake rotor with excessive rust inside the centre drum. This is where the parking brake shoes apply.

While a rear brake replacement is hardly an unusual service at an automotive repair shop, there is much more needed to be done than simply replacing brake pads. The very first step before brakes are repaired is a detailed visual inspection. At our automotive repair shop, we measure the thickness of the brake pads and rotors, or drums and shoes. We test the calipers and wheel cylinders for leaks and proper movement. We test the brake fluid. After this initial assessment, what needs to be replaced can be determined. 1. The brake rotor, otherwise known as the brake disc. This component is attached to the wheel hub and usually held in place by the wheel. Usually by the time brake pads wear out rotors are also worn out. Rotors are prone to rusting as they are composed of bare metal and exposed to the elements. While they can be machined on a brake lathe, this practice has largely disappeared as many shops no

longer have a lathe. Fortunately rotors are reasonably priced and a better brake job is done by using new rotors as they are of optimum thickness and that helps to disperse heat quickly. 2. Wheel hub. This is where the brake rotor sits sandwiched between hub and wheel. By the time the brakes wear out the hub usual gets rusty. Cleaning the rust corrosion from the hub is critical for a proper rotor fit and to prevent premature warping and brake shudder. 3. Brake caliper. The caliper squeezes the brake pads against the rotor. It has one or more fluidfilled pistons that operate when the brake pedal is pressed. There

New brake rotor.

are often other sliding components with the caliper and keeping these parts well-lubricated and free of corrosion is critical to long brake-pad life and efficient brake operation. The brake pads sit inside the caliper bracket and move slightly back and forth with every brake application. Over time rust corrosion sets in and causes pads to stick. Often pads will wear out prematurely when this happens. An important part of doing a quality brake job involves cleaning, removing corrosion and lubricating these critical moving parts. 4. Brake pads. The brake pads are generally made of a

composite material that is softer than the brake rotors. They were once primarily made of hazardous asbestos mineral. As with rotors, there is a wide variety of product price offering for brake pads. The recommendation is to use as close to the original equipment manufacture (OEM)

pad as possible. However, there are many good quality aftermarket pads that will outlast OEMinstalled pads, sometimes by a substantial margin. Following all of these procedures on this list of components will ensure that a brake repair or replacement is done correctly.

Air Canada rouge’s new service will generate approximately $7.2-million in Gross Domestic Product, $4.5-million

It will also provide opportunities for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America. “Air connections between Mexico and Canada are essential to the growing mobility of citizens between both countries; the new Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Vancouver will foster tourism, business and student travel in both directions,” said Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver. “Furthermore, competitive prices will enable Mexico’s global airline to tap
