Starting at 1pm on December 6, the Santa Claus Parade will travel east from Georgia and Broughton towards Howe then turn south on to Howe, ending at Howe and Davie. It is expected to attract more than 300,000 spectators to downtown

The parade is one of the largest food and fundraising events for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Since 2004, the Santa Claus Parade has collected $132,400 and more than 33,000 kilograms of food for hungry families in the Lower Mainland.

ANA’s Star Wars-themed R2-D2 aircraft lands at YVR

On October 18, 2015, YVR welcomed a Star Wars-themed All Nippon Airways (ANA) R2-D2 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The arrival of ANA’s 787-9 Dreamliner marked the first time the aircraft touched down on North American soil as part of its scheduled service between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Japan’s largest airline, All Nippon Airways (ANA) flew its R2-D2 jet to YVR last month—the first of three Star Wars-themed aircraft to go into service on international routes.

The livery and in-flight décor of the aircraft are inspired by the robot character R2-D2, which served

Anakin and Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movie franchise.

Passengers will be able to watch all six Star Wars movies from their seats—the first time any of the films have been shown as in-flight entertainment.

Channelling the force – While on the campaign trail last month in Vancouver Justin Trudeau, newly elected Prime Minister of Canada, was able to see the All Nippon Airways Star Wars-themed aircraft at YVR. Prime Minister Trudeau cites the Stars Wars film series as his favourite movies.

Last month, in partnership with NAV Canada, YVR became the first Canadian airport to make new satellite-based Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures available to eligible arriving aircraft.

Use of Global Positioning System (GPS) and sophisticated avionics is quickly becoming the new worldwide standard for aircraft navigation, yielding benefits of safety, efficiency and reduced environmental impact in many instances.

Eligible technology-equipped aircraft arriving on YVR’s North Runway (08L) may be permitted to use a new Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedure, a type of PBN, to land.

This procedure uses continuous descent and reduced engine thrust to safely land the aircraft.

Aircraft landing at YVR using the new procedure will reduce total flying time by twoto-three minutes and an average of 18 kilometres per flight;

Today, tags are printed thermally and feature barcodes read by automatic tag readers to enable automated sorting and delivery to the correct aircraft through airports’ complex baggage belt systems.

save an estimated 100 to 300 litres of fuel per flight, depending on aircraft type; and reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2,500 tonnes per year.

As the majority of the flight path used for RNP landings on the North Runway is over the water of English Bay and the Strait of Georgia, these changes are not expected to impact aircraft noise levels in populated areas.

Although the number of aircraft landing at YVR using the new RNP procedures will be small, initially, this is expected to increase as air traffic control becomes more accustomed to the new procedures and more airlines equip its aircraft with the new technology.

Flying quietly reaps awards In 2005, the Fly Quiet Awards were introduced at YVR to raise awareness of noise issues among aircraft operators. These annual awards are given to operators with the lowest departure noise levels as measured by the airport’s Noise Monitoring and Flight Tracking System across three classes: propeller aircraft; narrow-body aircraft; and wide body aircraft.

Advances in aircraft and engine design have significantly reduced the sound levels generated by newer commercial aircraft, compared to older generation aircraft. For example, according to Boeing Commercial Airplanes, its long-range, midsize wide-body, twin-engine 787 Dreamliner jet airliner, the newest aircraft operating at YVR, uses a number of new technologies to reduce the noise footprint by 60 per cent smaller than similarly sized airplanes.

Compass Card Program rolls out at YVR Compass cards are now available throughout the transit system in Metro Vancouver, including at all three Canada Line stations on Sea Island. The re-loadable, electronic cards allow users to tap in and out of the TransLink system.

There is no change to Canada Line operations for the time being. Fare gates will remain open and FareSaver tickets and monthly passes can still be used.

Prior to Compass being fully implemented by TransLink, Sea Island employees will be eligible to receive a free red-coloured YVR Compass card that will allow them to travel from any of Sea Island’s three Canada Line stations to any other point east of Sea Island without paying the $5 AddFare that is levied and collected by TransLink.

TransLink oversees the Compass program and will determine when Compass is fully implemented.

Travel within Sea Island-only on Canada Line will remain free.

Passengers and visitors can pull a free ticket from Compass vending machines, which are located on each Canada Line platform, while employees can use their red YVR Compass card.

China seeks to challenge Boeing, Airbus with its own passenger jet

Earlier this month, China unveiled its first homegrown large passenger jet, manufactured by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the state-owned aviation manufacturer.

Rolled out in Shanghai, the Chinese C919 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft seating up

to 168 people in an all-economy class layout that is similar in size to the Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 series of jets.

Although the C919’s maiden flight is at least a year away, it is speculated that the Chinese government wants to use the plane as a springboard to develop a nationwide aviation industry.

One of these contests is held at Thanksgiving, when the YVR Chapel staff asks Sea Island employees to give their responses to the question: “For what are you thankful?”

AIAC and CARIC partner to create national aerospace technology development roadmap The Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) and the Consortium for Aerospace Research and Innovation (CARIC) have announced a partnership to create a roadmap for national aerospace technology development in Canada.

As the world’s fifth-largest aerospace industry, Canada’s aerospace sector contributes more than $29-billion to the economy in GDP, exports 80 per cent of its output and dedicates more than 20 per cent of its activity to research and development (R&D). Aerospace is responsible for the employment of 180,000 Canadians.

Coulson Group and Airbus to create new water bomber The Coulson Group of Canada, a forestry and aviation company based in Port Alberni, B.C., has signed an agreement with Airbus Defence and Space to supply and support the new water bomber version of the Airbus C295W transport aircraft.

Coulson will develop and manufacture a version of its Retardant Dropping System

(RDS), which is already in operation with the world’s most demanding firefighting agencies.

The system installed in the C295W will consist of two rollon-roll-off internal tanks, which can be easily removed after the fire season. The C295W will then be available for its conventional role as a ramp-equipped, multirole transport able to carry cargo,

troops, paratroops or stretchers.

The RDS for the C295W comprises two internal tanks of 3,500 litres each able to transport water or retardant and able to be refilled in under seven minutes.

When dropping, the flow-rate can be adjusted via the cockpit control panel according to the desired coverage, aircraft speed and height over terrain.

Last month, Royal Canadian Air Cadet (RCAC) 222 Shuswap Squadron cadet Shawn Smelsky’s photo of Salmon Arm, B.C. was chosen as YVR’s photo of the month.

Cadet Smelsky took his photo during gliding exercises 914 metres over Salmon Arm. Gliding is just one of the activities in which local Air Cadets participate. Other activities include citizenship and community service, public speaking, leadership skills, survival skills and marksmanship.

YVR is currently renovating the Domestic Terminal and has

had an ongoing photo contest since February 2013 with winning photos used to help brighten the temporary walls covering the construction.

People from all over the world have been submitting photos taken while in flight over

Canada. The best photos will become part of a permanent display once the renovations are completed.

Earlier this month, Pacific Gateway Hotel (PGH) celebrated its first anniversary under the Preferred Hotels and Resorts brand, hosting a lavish party for suppliers, clients and team members.

The theme was #UnderWatergala, featuring a distinctive variety of food and spectacular live entertainment from local band, Side One. “Our chefs were excited to show off their creativity using fresh seafood as the main ingredient, in keeping with the event’s ocean theme,” said catering manager Cameron Johnson.”

The food, drinks and entertainment ran past midnight, with non-stop waves of culinary delectables for guests to enjoy as they danced the night away.

Over the past year, PGH has undergone upgrades to its 374 guest rooms and added six new second-floor suites for a total of 11. In addition, there has been an upgrade to the hotel’s lobby, ballroom and meeting space, which now accounts for 557 square metres.

It’s cool to be frozen at WestJet

WestJet’s second custom aircraft features characters from the Disney movie Frozen.

WestJet’s second custom aircraft in collaboration with Walt Disney Parks & Resorts was unveiled last month. The aircraft features Anna, Elsa and Olaf, characters from Disney’s beloved movie Frozen—the highest ever grossing animated film.

The characters on the plane’s tail are shown celebrating winter, with the scene warming up towards the nose of the airplane, where snowman Olaf can be seen basking on a beach.

Almost 265 litres of paint were used to create the coldto-warm scene on the Disney Frozen-themed plane. There were 23 colours used in the design and sparkles were added to sections of the paint to show movement as the aircraft flies through the sky.

The interior of the plane brings together a blend of colours that mimic the seasons, with the colours transitioning from warmto-cold, mirroring the exterior of the aircraft.

Caesars Palace to receive $75M upgrade Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip is getting a $75-million upgrade, which will see the property’s iconic Roman Tower updated and called the Julius Tower.

Last redone in 2001, the 567room Roman Tower will get 20 additional rooms in addition to its new name.

Caesars Palace, which opened on Aug. 5, 1966, and became a Hollywood favourite in movies such as Rain Man and The Hangover, has grown to about 3,960 rooms spread across

six towers.

Renovated rooms in the Julius Tower are expected to be ready for overnight guests starting Jan. 1, 2016, with room rates costing on average $149 a

night—about $20 to $30 more than before.

Effective Nov. 1, 2015, Sunwing Airlines is increasing the complimentary checked baggage allowance per passenger from 20 kilograms to 23 kilograms.

ance applies to the first piece of checked luggage only.

The airline has also simplified its excess baggage policy and will be introducing a flat fee for overweight and oversize items, rather than using a sliding scale.

Costumes and carved pumpkins a winning formula at Halloween festivities One of the most anticipated events held each at YVR is the Halloween celebration with its popular Pumpkin Carving and Costume contests.

This year’s event saw more than 66 entrants in both contests, providing the judges with a challenge to choose the winning entrants in both contests.

Winning entries in the pumpkin carving contest were: First Place: Charles Orquiola from Marquise, Minions Second Place: Yannie Kath, The Greenies

Third Place: Robie Nicado from Paradies, with the Magical Carriage from Cinderalla The Halloween Costume Contest had 40 entries parading their costumed selves across the YVR Halloween stage.

Costumes were unique and well designed, with adorable younger submissions as well.

Air Canada rouge inaugurated its non-stop seasonal service to Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka, Japan from YVR on May 1, 2015.

This service will operate up to five times weekly between Vancouver and Osaka for the peak summer travel period of May-October.

This new route is the only non-stop flight between KIX and a Canadian airport and will continue to bolster YVR’s current service to Japan.

YVR offers the most capacity and frequency to Japan of any other airport in Canada.

Aeromexico, Mexico’s flag carrier, will begin new daily non-stop service between YVR and Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) in Mexico City on December 9, 2015.

The airline will operate a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with seat capacity for 124 passengers including 12 in Class Premier, Aeromexico’s Business Class cabin.

“Aeromexico’s decision to fly to YVR further strengthens our position as the gateway hub between Asia and the Americas,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“The new service will give businesses more options to reach customers in Mexico and throughout Latin America.”

The new service will add 160 jobs to the B.C. economy and $9.9-million in Gross Domestic Product, $3.4-million in taxes and $2.9-million in wages to the province.

It will also provide opportunities for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America.

“Air connections between Mexico and Canada are essential to the growing mobility of citizens between both countries; the new Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Vancouver will foster tourism, business and student travel in both directions,” said Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver. “Furthermore, competitive prices will enable Mexico’s global airline to tap

into growing demand.”

Aeromexico offers connectivity to 45 destinations within Mexico and 16 destinations in Latin America.

Flight AM696 will leave MEX daily at 6pm, arriving at YVR at 10:05pm the same day.

Flight AM697 will leave YVR at 11:20pm, arriving at MEX at 7am the following day.

2011 BMW 550i xDrive: servicing a true driver’s car

2011 550i Xdrive.

This month, we look at the maintenance service performed on a 2011 BMW 550i xDrive, an amazing vehicle that comes with a twin turbo V8 engine and all-wheel-drive system.

While the vehicle’s technology performs well, routine maintenance is necessary to hold major repairs to a minimum.

BMW used a maintenance reminder system for several decades. The original system featured several green lights to indicate that an oil change was needed and amber lights for a general inspection. After service was performed, the reminder lamps on the dash could be reset using a special tool.

Starting in mid-2000 BMW introduced the iDrive, a more sophisticated maintenance reminder system.

Maintenance status was accessed via an LCD panel mounted in the dashboard and a controller knob mounted on the centre console. Maintenance reminders for brake pad changes, brake fluid flushing and tire pressure monitoring were also included.

BMW took critical service items and put them on display to make sure that they were handled when necessary. BMW owners could drive their vehicles until one of these maintenance reminders indicated that service was needed.

Maintenance display on the dash information panel—each item can be scrolled through to indicate the date and/or mileage that the service is due.

While an excellent system, it still does not offer reminders for other systems in the vehicle that might require maintenance. For example, the level and quality of drivetrain fluids, steering and suspension, a worn fan belt or an about-to-fail cooling system component.

Additionally, I consider BMW’s maintenance reminder for an oil change after 24,000 kilometres too long an interval for service. After such a lengthy interval, the oil becomes extremely dirty and contaminated, rendering it less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat. Changing the vehicle’s oil every 15,000 kilometres is the more prudent option to prevent major engine troubles.

At the very least, all vehicles should have a routine

comprehensive inspection performed annually. Most vehicles will easily last for at least 20 years with little trouble, provided regular maintenance is performed.

Additionally, a well-

maintained vehicle that is kept on the road for as long as possible saves money for the vehicle owner and minimizes the carbon footprint and resource usage in the manufacturing of that vehicle.

Air Canada rouge inaugurated its non-stop seasonal service to Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka, Japan from YVR on May 1, 2015.

This service will operate up to five times weekly between Vancouver and Osaka for the peak summer travel period of May-October.

This new route is the only non-stop flight between KIX and a Canadian airport and will continue to bolster YVR’s current service to Japan.

YVR offers the most capacity and frequency to Japan of any other airport in Canada.

Non-stop to Osaka departs from YVR

Aeromexico, Mexico’s flag carrier, will begin new daily non-stop service between YVR and Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) in Mexico City on December 9, 2015.

The airline will operate a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with seat capacity for 124 passengers including 12 in Class Premier, Aeromexico’s Business Class cabin.

“Aeromexico’s decision to fly to YVR further strengthens our position as the gateway hub between Asia and the Americas,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“The new service will give businesses more options to reach customers in Mexico and throughout Latin America.”

The new service will add 160 jobs to the B.C. economy and $9.9-million in Gross Domestic Product, $3.4-million in taxes and $2.9-million in wages to the province.

It will also provide opportunities for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors throughout Mexico and Latin America.

“Air connections between Mexico and Canada are essential to the growing mobility of citizens between both countries; the new Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Vancouver will foster tourism, business and student travel in both directions,” said Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver. “Furthermore, competitive prices will enable Mexico’s global airline to tap

into growing demand.”

Aeromexico offers connectivity to 45 destinations within Mexico and 16 destinations in Latin America.

Flight AM696 will leave MEX daily at 6pm, arriving at YVR at 10:05pm the same day.

Flight AM697 will leave YVR at 11:20pm, arriving at MEX at 7am the following day.

The arrival time at YVR allows for convenient connections onward to Asian markets.

Skytrak Thank You Friday was a celebration of YVR’s sixth consecutive year of maintaining its #1 ranking as Best Airport in North America.

Last Month, YVR celebrated its record-setting sixth consecutive Skytrax win for Best Airport in North America with an in-terminal thank-you celebration.

YVR team members, with the help of 55 employees from 11 organizations handed out 3,000 chocolate airplane lollipops, 2,500 YVR chocolates, 3,000 YVR lollipops and thousands of thank-you postcards to

YVR employees, passengers, partners and community members.

Thank-you squads were deployed airside and in-terminal. The airplane lollipops, all of which were distributed by lunchtime, proved to be a hot commodity.

The Airport Authority expressed thanks to everyone who participated in the celebration and to the 24,000 people who work and volunteer at YVR.
