Passengers flying from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in summer 2016 will have yet another new destination to choose from when Air Canada begins thrice-weekly service to Dublin, Ireland. This new non-stop service will operate between June 1 and October 8, 2016. “Air Canada’s strategic growth plans out of YVR continue to offer passengers exciting choices for travel, while creating new jobs, increasing access to global destinations and opening new markets for B.C. goods,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver

Airport Authority. “The new Dublin service will help fill the high demand for flights

to Europe during the busy summer travel season and will also offer a new opportunity

for British Columbia to showcase itself to arriving visitors from Ireland.”

New routes at YVR mean more jobs for British Columbians and these new Air Canada seasonal, non- -stop flights to Dublin will create 37 jobs at YVR and in nearby hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. In addition, the new service will contribute $2.6-million to B.C.’s gross domestic product. “We’re excited to see YVR continue to grow with new routes and more flights, all of which translates to hundreds of new jobs for B.C.’s vibrant and growing tourism industry,” said Marsha Walden, CEO, Destination British Columbia. Whether it’s the status of your flight, the closest bathroom to your gate or even the whereabouts of your favourite cup of java, there’s an App to help you find just that at YVR. The YVR Airport App, designed to make the travel experience even smoother for passengers, has been unveiled just in time for the busy holiday travel season. The App allows users to build a detailed itinerary for their journey through YVR; find retail coupons; play games; and view 3D terminal maps, flight information, store hours and more. “We’re always looking for innovative ways to improve the travel experience at YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This new digital tool will help passengers move more efficiently throughout the airport and take us one step closer to becoming a perceptive facility that anticipates customers’ needs and wants throughout the entire airport experience.” YVR Airport is available for free on iOS and Android and

allows users to: • Select their flight and view itinerary for their journey through YVR • View 3D maps of terminal buildings including quickest route to your gate • Receive up-to-date notifications and flight-status changes • Redeem coupons for special offers • Discover shops, services and facilities • Play a game and post high scores to leaderboards

The Airport Authority took a unique approach to the creation of the YVR App by partnering with a local gaming company rather than an App developer. The result is a platform that offers significant opportunities for growth. Future releases are expected to include new games, GPS capabilities and personalization features that will offer users the ability to save food preferences and find restaurants to match their needs, or review their trip history.

New, green parking system launched at YVR

Air Canada expands U.S. service out of YVR

Transborder

Starting May 2016, Air Canada rouge will begin daily summer service to San Diego, California via Airbus A319 aircraft.

YVR’s new, chip-embedded plastic tokens have replaced paper parking tickets, reducing waste and building on Vancouver Airport Authority’s commitment to sustainability.

A new green parking system has replaced the thousands of paper parking tickets printed monthly at YVR. The new system, which began this month, is another example of YVR’s commitment to leadership in sustainability. Instead of receiving a paper ticket, drivers who enter YVR’s Parkade or Value Lot press a button to receive a green, chipembedded plastic token that

tracks parking time. Once the token is dispensed, the gate will open to allow vehicle access to the lot. When ready to depart the airport, customers have the option to save time and money by paying with cash, debit or credit at a self-serve Automated Pay Station. The stations are located throughout the Parkade and before the covered walkway in the Value Lot. Once paid, cus-

tomers use their token to exit through an Express Exit Lane. Customers also have the option to provide their token and payment to a cashier upon leaving the Parkade or Value Lot, or pay by debit or credit in the Express Exit Lane. The system is user-friendly, but if assistance is needed drivers may simply press the intercom button on any of the parking machines to access airport parking staff. The new green-token parking system will also be rolled out to YVR’s jetSet Parking Lot in 2016.

Air Canada will launch three new U.S.-bound routes out of YVR, starting in 2016. The new transborder routes include daily non-stop service between YVR and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), YVR and San Diego International Airport (SAN) and twice-daily non-stop service between YVR and San Jose International Airport (SJC). “We are thrilled that Air Canada is expanding their U.S.bound services out of YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Air Canada’s decision to introduce new destinations at YVR further strengthens our position as a hub and provides more non-stop travel options and convenient connections from YVR.” The inaugural flights to San

Jose and San Diego in June 2016 will mark the only services to these cities from Vancouver. These new destinations will offer Vancouverites access to two popular California markets for both holidays and business opportunities. These three new services will also add 226 jobs to the B.C. economy and $17.5-million in Gross Domestic Product, $5.5-million in taxes and $4.6-million in wages to the province. The new routes announced will be operated by Air Canada, Air Canada rouge and Air Canada Express aircraft. Service to Chicago and San Jose will operate year-round, while the San Diego route will offer summer service from June to Octobder.

On November 17, 2015, Air Canada welcomed confirmation by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) that its members have ratified an agreement on collective agreement terms for 10 years. CUPE represents approximately 6,500 flight attendants at Air Canada and 700 at Air Canada rouge. The agreement, which is subject to certain openers over the 10-year period, has been approved by the Air Canada Board of Directors. This agreement with CUPE follows on the conclusion in October 2014 of a new agreement with Air Canada’s 3,000 pilots on collective agreement terms for 10 years. It is the fifth collective agreement reached by Air Canada and its unions, including those with Unifor, representing the airline’s 4,000 customer service and sales agents in Canada; the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), representing its U.S. unionized workforce; and UNITE, representing its U.K. unionized workforce.

WestJet once again named one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures for 2015

For a record sixth time, Waterstone Human Capital has named WestJet as having one of Canada’s 10 most-admired corporate cultures. No other company has received this honour as many times as WestJet, which is also an original inductee into Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures Hall of Fame in 2009. Canada’s 10 Most-Admired Corporate Cultures program, now in its ninth year, recognizes best-in-class Canadian organizations for having a culture that has helped them enhance performance and sustain a competitive advantage. “In our work at Waterstone, we partner with leaders of highgrowth organizations to help them recruit for fit and provide counsel on human capital issues to drive performance,” said Marty Parker, president and CEO of Waterstone Human Capital and chair of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures. “What’s so impressive about this diverse list of 2015 winners is their shared belief that culture is their competitive advantage; they know that building and sustaining a great culture is a significant asset that drives performance. The 2015 winning organizations have shown diverse strategies in achieving inspirational cultures that have measureable results.” WestJet was among the first Canadian companies to receive this honour during the program’s inaugural year in 2005, repeating in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011. The airline is one of just seven Canadian companies in the program’s hall of fame. Waterstone’s complete list of 2015 winners is available at canadasmostadmired.com/fullwinners.html.

Boeing, Canadian industry launch biofuel project using forest waste Boeing, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Netherlands-based SkyNRG, with support from Canada’s aviation industry and other stakeholders, are collaborating to turn leftover branches, sawdust and other forest-industry waste into sustainable aviation biofuel. Canada, which has extensive sustainably certified forests, has long used mill and forest residues to make wood pellets that are used to generate electricity. A consortium led by UBC and Vancouver-based NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd., and which includes Boeing, Air Canada, WestJet, Bombardier, research institutions and industry partners, will assess whether forest waste could also be harnessed to produce sustainable aviation biofuel using thermochemical processing. A Boeing-sponsored study by UBC found that aviation biofuel made from forest waste could meet 10 per cent—about 175-million litres—of British Columbia’s annual jet fuel demand. According to the study,

these efforts could also supply biofuel to ground and marine vehicles, saving about nine-million kilograms of CO2 emissions per year on a life-cycle basis across the transportation sector. “Air Canada believes that developing a reliable supply of sustainable aviation biofuel in Canada will play a role in achieving our emission reduction goals,” said Teresa Ehman, director, environmental affairs, Air Canada. “By utilizing Canada’s strong forestry research expertise and the knowledge of industry collaborators, this project will contribute significantly to understanding the viability of forest residue-sourced biofuel.” Using sustainably produced biofuel reduces lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions by 50 to 80 per cent compared to conventional petroleum fuel, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. “WestJet has invested billions of dollars in fleet renewal to reduce our fuel consumption and to ensure we are doing our part

towards responsible growth and environmental sustainability,” said Geoff Tauvette, director of fuel and environment, WestJet. “WestJet’s social responsibility mandate is to extend our culture of caring beyond our aircraft doors and we are proud to support initiatives such as these that reduce our carbon footprint through the research, development and production of aviation biofuels in Canada.” The project to assess the harnessing of forest waste to produce sustainable aviation biofuel, announced during the recent 2015 Canadian Bioeconomy Conference in Vancouver, was recently awarded funding by the Green Aviation Research and Development Network (GARDN) of Canada as part of a portfolio of investments in technologies to reduce aviation’s carbon emissions. Boeing has active biofuel projects on six continents, including in the U.S., Australia, Brazil, China, Europe, Middle East, South Africa and Southeast Asia.

Green Technology Air Transat remains in top 10 for environmental performance

Air Transat’s fleet consists of wide-body Airbus A330s, A310s and Boeing 737s.

In the wake of the recent Paris Climate Conference, German NGO Atmosfair published its Airline Index for a fifth consecutive year in which Air Transat remains its ranking among the world’s 10 best performing airlines, in regard to fuel economy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The only North American airline in Atmosfair’s top 10, Air Transat ranks fifth in the world in the long-haul category and ninth in all categories of this annual index, which evaluates the environmental performance of close to 200 airlines. “We are extremely proud of these results that place us among the most climate-friendly air-

lines,” said Jean-François Lemay, general manager, Air Transat. “They confirm the effectiveness of the environmental measures we are putting in place, and encourage us to keep up our efforts to reduce fuel consumption. Our fuel management program, which is one of the best in the industry, has brought about an annual five per cent decrease in consumption since 2003 and we feel we can decrease it by another one per cent.” The Atmosfair Airline Index provides information for travellers to choose airlines based on its CO2 emission levels. The companies that stand out are those that strive to reduce its emissions, especially by reducing

its fuel consumption, using modern fleets adapted to its routes and maximizing airplane loads. For the past several years, Air Transat has been recognized for its initiatives aimed at reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. These measures mostly include the implementation of reliable fuel management technology, aircraft weight reduction, optimization of flight plans and ground operations, progressive installation of innovative split scimitar winglets on Boeing 737 aircraft and a fleet with a greater proportion of more energy-efficient Airbus A330 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

Boeing employees celebrate the roll out of the new 737 MAX 8 single-aisle aircraft.

Earlier this month, thousands of Boeing employees in Renton, Wash., celebrated the completion of final assembly of the first 737 MAX 8. The production-complete airplane rolled out of the Renton factory and into the paint hangar on November 30, the precise date determined when the MAX development schedule was defined more than four years ago. The freshly painted 737 MAX 8, named the Spirit of Renton, was then revealed to employees in a special teal version of the Boeing livery. The airplane is now undergoing pre-flight preparation in

the factory before departing for Renton Field to continue flight test readiness. The airplane is on track for first flight in early 2016. With the second and third 737 MAX 8 flight test airplanes currently in final assembly and the fourth (and final) in sub-assembly, the 737 MAX remains on track for first delivery to launch customer Southwest Airlines in the third quarter of 2017. According to Boeing, the new single-aisle airplane will deliver 20 per cent lower fuel use than the first Next-Generation 737s and the lowest operating costs: eight per cent per seat less

than the Airbus A320neo. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Boeing-designed Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the singleaisle market. The 737 MAX 8 is the first member in Boeing’s new family of single-aisle airplanes— the 737 MAX 7, MAX 8, MAX 200 and MAX 9—to begin production. Boeing’s 737 MAX family has received nearly 3,000 orders from 60 customers worldwide.

How dental insurance works If you have a dental insurance plan, it is important to know that benefits typically expire at the end of the year. Dental insurance plans usually have a yearly dollar maximum that does not carry over into the New Year, creating a “use it or lose it” scenario. If you are covered by an employee dental plan, a portion of your paycheque goes towards your benefits and even if you do not use your insurance that portion will not be refunded. So, if you are paying for dental benefits, why not use them? Since every dental plan is different, it is a good idea to ask your dental office to check your plan’s benefits prior to treatment. If your dental plan does not provide 100 per cent coverage, it is your responsibility to pay the remaining portion. Your dental team will do their best to help you get coverage information from your insurance company, but some companies will not provide coverage information to a dental office. In this case, you will need to go online or call the insurance company yourself to find out coverage details. You can also give your insurance company authorization to give this information to the dental office. If you have more than one

insurance plan, let the dental office know and provide them with this information before treatment. The dental office will then bill any portion of your treatment that is not covered by your first plan to the second plan, instead of to you. It is also important to know that insurance companies will not notify your dental office if your coverage has changed or been terminated, so always make sure that your dental office has your current dental insurance plan information. Make the most of your benefits every year by having regular cleanings and check-ups. Regular

check-ups allow for early detection of cavities, cracked or leaking fillings, gum disease, oral cancer and much more. Visit your dentist regularly and ensure that your oral health is at its optimum. Dr. Amy Nunrha and her dental team at YVR would be happy to answer any questions you have about your dental insurance plan and see you before the end of the year. Call 604-276-2121, email yvrdental@telus.net, or visit the Vancouver Airport Dental Centre located on Level 1, Domestic Terminal, around the corner from the 7-11 and beside the Pharmasave.

TRAVEL The Planet

Making a list and checking it twice before travelling The Christmas holiday season is one of the busiest travel times of the year and Santa should not be the only person making and checking lists before beginning his voyage from the North Pole. Your last-minute checklist before departing YVR should include clicking on the following websites to make sure you have the best possible travel experience that is both stress-free and fun-filled. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) YVR posts the latest information concerning airport operations on its homepage and will use an alert bar in the event of a major incident (yvr.ca). You can also check your flight status before arriving at the terminal. For quick information, follow on twitter @yvrairport. DriveBC Driving to the airport? Check the DriveBC website to see if any construction or motor vehicle accidents are causing congestion on your route by checking the local traffic cameras (images. drivebc.ca). Updated in real time, you will be able to better plan your drive to YVR and sort

out an alternate route if necessary. Translink Taking public transit to YVR? Check in with TransLink (translink.ca) for any major service disruptions or to find the absolute fastest way to reach YVR via bus/train/seabus. Translink instant updates are also available on twitter at twitter.com/ TransLink. Government of Canada The Travel Canada website has many great resources for Canadians travelling abroad. Its posts include important travel, weather and health advisories and embassy and consulate contacts should you have the misfortune of losing vital travel documents while abroad. Offered by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, the registration service is free and keeps you connected to Canada in case of an emergency, such as an earthquake or civil unrest abroad, or an emergency at home. (travel.gc.ca/travelling) Environment Canada Any important weather advisories that may impact your outbound travel plans will be posted to the official website of Environment Canada (weather. gc.ca). If you see something

that might delay or cancel a flight, check with your airline for the most up-to-date flight information. Airline Important information can be found at your airline’s website, and if you’ve booked through a third party you may never have visited to check on important such as: luggage allowances; important information about flying with your pet; or details on in-flight entertainment options. You can also manage your booking, arrange any special assistance and, of course, use the online check-in function to prebook your favourite seat and save some time at the airport. CATSA The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority’s website (catsa.gc.ca) has extremely useful functions if you’re about to take off. Its wait time calculator will let you know approximately how long the line-ups are at security checkpoints. The website’s “What Can I Bring” tool also provides information on what you can and can’t bring in your carry-on luggage. Happy holidays and safe travel.

KLM begins operational Biometric technology will trials of Spencer robot herald air travel’s next ‘golden age’

The Spencer robot is being trialled in an operational airport environment for the first time at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Photo: courtesy Future Travel Experience.

KLM has begun trialling the project robot Spencer, which is being developed to guide passengers through its airport terminals. The first test started at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol last month and, according to KLM and others involved in the project, Spencer goes “far beyond the skills of the current generation of robots.” The ultimate aim is for the robot to be able to recognize emotions, consider group behaviour and proactively respond to unexpected situations, putting this information to use as it guides groups of passengers in a busy area. It is expected to prove especially helpful to transfer passengers who have to walk directly to their connecting gate upon arrival

at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Spencer has been in development, programming and testing for more than two years already, but this trial marks its first test in an operational environment. No passengers are involved at this stage, however. “The advent of robotics is, strategically, an important development, for which we have prepared and which we want to test,” said Michel Pozas, vice president customer innovation and care, Air France-KLM. “KLM is of the opinion that robotics will have a growing impact on air transport in the coming years. We are testing technology in several areas, to assess if and how robotics would augment our processes.”

easyJet to trial cabin crew uniforms with embedded wearable technology

easyJet airline’s new cabin crew uniform features LED lights and an in-built microphone and will be trialled from early 2016.

European carrier easyJet has revealed that its cabin crew will soon start wearing uniforms featuring embedded wearable technology devices. The new cabin crew uniforms will include LEDs on the shoulders and illuminated hems to provide additional lighting in an emergency, LEDs on jacket lapels displaying information such as flight numbers and destinations and in-built microphones to improve communication between the crew, pilot and passengers. Ground staff uniforms will also feature LEDs in the jacket cuffs to help with aircraft movement on the ground. New engineer uniforms will also be rolled out. These will fea-

ture LEDs in jacket hoods to illuminate work areas and leave both hands free for aircraft inspection and maintenance, multiple reflective laser cut decoration to aid visibility on the airfield, in-built video cameras to allow for remote diagnosis of technical issue, along with surround sound and a microphone for instant communication capability, and air quality sensors and barometer features to help engineers monitor their work environment and create a map of air quality in different cities for passengers’ information.

A new industry report exploring how the implementation of biometrics can impact the end-toend air travel experience suggests that the industry is on the cusp of a major transformation, which it labels ‘the next golden age of air travel’. The ongoing trial of a facial recognition technology-enabled single passenger token by KLM at Aruba Airport, and the recent pilot of a fingerprint-based passenger token by Alaska Airlines at San Jose International Airport, highlight the potential of biometrics, which have emerged as a key tool in the drive to simplify and secure the passenger experience. The new report by Tascent, a U.S.-based biometrics company,

highlights a variety of scenarios to demonstrate how biometrics can improve the travel experience in the years ahead. These scenarios include using biometrics to expedite self-service bag drop, self-boarding and automated frequent flyer lounge entry. The report states that biometrics can also be used in aircraft cabins to personalize inflight entertainment offerings, streamline in-flight purchases and enable in-flight immigration processing. Many of these points align with the findings of the FTE Onboard 2025 Think Tank vision, which has been developed by senior figures from Airbus, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Panasonic Avionics, Avianca

and Honour Branding, presented in November at Future Travel Experience Asia EXPO 2015 in Singapore. “As greater numbers of people move around the world, we need to find radical ways to increase their enjoyment, reduce their impact and speed them through con-

trols, with simpler processes and better security,” said Geoffrey Lipman, president of the International Council of Tourism Partners. “This study shows how that can be done more efficiently, using modern technology—it holds great promise for the immediate future.”

Five new biometric-enabled bag drop units have been installed at Auckland Airport, with a further eight to be added in early 2016.

Air New Zealand has installed the first of its new biometric technology-enabled selfservice bag drops at Auckland Airport. As well as self-scanning their passport and boarding pass, passengers will have an image of their face captured by an embedded biometric camera. If everything is in order, they can then place their bag onto the belt to be weighed, before it is automatically deposited into the baggage handling system. Five of the new self-service bag drop machines have been installed, with a further eight scheduled to be installed in early 2016. “We can now streamline the check-in process for our custom-

ers at Auckland International Airport and provide a more seamless airport journey,” said John Whittaker, Air New Zealand Group general manager airports. “It will reduce the time it takes for our customers to check in and free up our airport team to interact with customers and support them through the self-service process should they require assistance.” The introduction of the new bag drops follows last month’s launch of Airband—a wristband for children travelling unaccompanied, which is embedded with technology that triggers text messages to guardians letting them know where the child is during their journey.

Fodor’s Travel has named Utah as the top destination for 2016. Photo: courtesy Utah Office of Tourism.

Fodor’s Travel, which has been synonymous with travel for almost 80 years, has released its fifth annual Fodor’s Go List. The list highlights 25 can’tmiss spots around the world that should be on every traveller’s radar in 2016 and includes destinations for every type of trip—from palm-lined beaches in Guadeloupe to opulent beauty in Abu Dhabi. The destinations, which span six continents and 20 countries, are chosen by the experts at Fodor’s Travel who log countless

miles travelling across the globe each year. This year’s list incorporates everything from emerging destinations (Minneapolis’s North Loop) and new hotspots (Cuba) to noteworthy events (Bavaria’s Oktoberfest will be even more of a party as they celebrate the 500th anniversary of the famous Beer Purity Law) and great values (San Sebastian, Spain) around the world. For the first time, Fodor’s has selected a top destination for the year: Utah. With its newly

expanded Park City, the largest single ski and snowboard resort in the U.S., five outstanding national parks celebrating the U.S. National Park Service Centennial and experiences such as viewing fossils at Dinosaur National Monument, rafting the Colorado River or staying at a working ranch, Utah has been chosen by Fodor as the place to get outdoors next year. The iconic Hogwarts Castle of “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” will open on April 7, 2016, at Universal Studios Hollywood.

It’s official, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will open at Universal Studios Hollywood on Thursday, April 7, 2016, marking the highly-anticipated arrival of the West Coast’s dynamic new immersive experience at The Entertainment Capital of L.A. More than five years in the making, and inspired by J.K. Rowling’s compelling stories and characters that were brought to life in the Warner Bros. films, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is being recreated with impeccable detail as a real-world interpretation at Universal Studios Hollywood. The land will be faithful to the visual landscape of the fiction and films, including Hogwarts castle which will serve as its iconic focal point. From its snow-capped roofs and cobblestone streets to the

historic British sensibilities that characterize the whimsical look and feel of the land, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is designed to transport guests of all ages to the very places they read about in the stories or watched on the silver screen. Upon entering the land through the archway, Hogsmeade will bustle to life with the same vitality of a quaint local village: merchants hard at work, a train conductor welcoming new arrivals and a pub packed to the gills with hungry patrons, but with the added element of enthusiastic guests intent on experiencing them all, including the land’s signature ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and a family outdoor coaster. An achievement in pioneering theme park ride technology,

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey will make its U.S. debut at Universal Studios Hollywood in hyper-realistic 3D-HD designed to further immerse guests in an already engaging storyline. The multidimensional thrill ride features a groundbreaking robotics ride system, fused with elaborate filmed action sequences and immersive visceral effects. In this updated adaptation of the ride, guests will sport Quidditch-inspired 3D goggles as they venture through journeys experienced by Harry and his friends, spiraling and pivoting 360-degrees along an elevated ride track on a whirlwind adventure of a lifetime. A foray through the shops will add to the authenticity of the land with eight retail venues and locations.

New supersonic Aerion AS2 aircraft headed for the skies U.S.-based Flexjet, a private aviation operator, has placed an order valued at $2.4-billion for 20 Aerion AS2 supersonic business jets. The Aerion AS2, designed by Aerion Corporation in collaboration with Airbus, is scheduled to enter service in 2023. The aircraft was first announced during September 2014, with first flight expected in 2021. The AS2 will fly at a speed of Mach 1.2, which is 67 per cent faster than the top cruise speeds

of current or anticipated longrange subsonic jets, using supersonic laminar flow technology. According to Aerion, the AS2’s wing design will allow for lighter fuel consumption and increased travel ranges by reducing aerodynamic drag by 20 per cent. The cabin is designed to accommodate up to 12 passengers. The AS2 can be flown at speeds lower than the speed of sound over land in the U.S.,

Europe and areas where the sonic boom is restricted, but it will not be cost-effective to do so. Flexjet CEO Kenn Ricci said the company will use the supersonic jet for overseas flights, including China, which does not have restrictions on sonic booms. The AS2 will have a range of 4,750 nm at supersonic speeds, which will save three hours flying across the Atlantic, versus subsonic aircraft, and more than six hours on longer transpacific flights.

Dubbed “Son of Concorde”, the Aerion AS2 supersonic commercial aircraft could be making transAtlantic flights in around four hours as early as 2023.

Did you Know?

Supersonic flight is one of the four speeds of flight – subsonic, transonic, supersonic and hypersonic. Aircraft that fly at supersonic speeds are flying faster than the speed of sound, which is about 1,236 kilometres per hour at sea level. These speeds are referred to by Mach numbers. The Mach number is the ratio of the speed of the aircraft to the speed of sound. Flight that is faster than Mach 1 is supersonic. Supersonic includes speeds up to five times faster than the speed of sound, or Mach 5. In 1947, Air Force Capt. Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager became the first person to fly an aircraft faster than the speed of sound.

Pinnacle Living at Capstan Village comprising a mix of residential, retail and office spaces, artist studios, a hotel and a city park adjacent to a planned SkyTrain station.

The City of Richmond has set a new all-time record for annual building activity. The construction value of Richmond building permits issued for 2015 through the end of October was $876.9-million. The previous high for a single year was $812-million in 2010. Multi-family residential construction continues to lead the way in Richmond. From January to October 2015, 90 multifamily permits were issued for a total of 1,911 units. By comparison 49 multi-family permits for a total of 1,215 new units were issued in 2014. “Sustained, planned growth provides many benefits for our community,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “It creates jobs, increases our tax base and leverages developer contributions to expanded

and improved public infrastructure and amenities, such as new parks and roads, affordable housing, childcare and more. It also supports our Official Community Plan vision for Richmond to be a sustainable city, by directing most new development into our transit-focussed city centre.” A total of 1,448 permits were issued from January to October of this year, covering all building types. There were 420 commercial building permits issued in the first 10 months of 2015, compared to 363 issued for the same period in 2014. Single family residential construction has remained steady with 413 permits issued for new single family home construction so far in 2015, compared to 341 in the same period for 2014.

Repairing a three-litre diesel engine’s swirl valve motor

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee with three-litre diesel engine.

Over the past few years, my automotive repair shop mechanics have serviced and repaired many Mercedes Benz vehicles equipped with three-litre diesel engines—ML 350, R350 and Sprinter Van models. Three-litre diesel engines are also found in many other vehicles—VW, Audi, Porsche and Jeep Grand Cherokee. While this type of engine in the Mercedes’ models experience similar repair problems, there is an additional repair that is needed more frequently with the Jeep Grand Cherokee—that being failure of the swirl valve motor. Before I address concerns unique to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, let’s review the swirl valve system. Swirl valves are located inside the intake manifold and are operated by a motor that is located between the two manifolds and under the turbo intake pipe. The swirl valves create air turbulence at lower RPMs to increase fuel and air mix. This adds more bottom-end power and reduces emissions. The motor opens the

valves to allow improved air flow at higher engine speeds where turbulence is naturally generated. The valves and motors are vulnerable to failure in different ways: the valves can stick due to soot from the EGR system while the motor can fail electrically, mechanically or from oil intrusion. The latter is a frequent concern on Jeep models and is due to a defective air intake hose, sometimes referred to an elephant hose due to its ‘trunk’like shape.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, on which we recently provided service, was brought to us with its Check Engine and Reduced Power warning lights on. The vehicle also suffered from poor acceleration. During diagnosis, we found codes for operation of the swirl valve motor that were inoperative. An in-depth visual inspection found that the air intake hose was coming apart—as they all do—and this breakdown was allowing oil to leak onto the swirl valve motor below. Performing this type of repair is very time consuming. For example, the turbocharger and related piping must be taken off to access the swirl valve motor. On this Jeep, we found so much oil in and on the motor that it left a small puddle on our work bench. Proper repairs included replacing not just the motor but

also the air intake pipe. Inspecting the air intake hose on a regular basis for oil leakage is an important part of a good maintenance plan on all Mercedes three-litre diesel engine vehicles, and especially on Jeep Grand Cherokees. The ‘elephant’ hose for the Jeep is under $200, plus a nomi-

nal labour charge. Swirl valve motor replacement is at least a $2,000 job, so in this case an ounce of prevention is worth far more than a pound of cure. This repair can be needed even on a very low mileage vehicle—this Jeep had only 61,000

kilometres on the clock. Upon completion of repairs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee ran well, and the Check Engine light remained off. It was an expensive repair, but it would have been even more expensive if the turbocharger also needed repair.

Air Intake Duct Hose, sometimes referred to as the Elephant Hose owing to its resemblance to the pachyderm’s trunk. The hose usually suffers from failure around the red seal, which causes oil leakage. (INSET) Swirl Valve Motor—this unit was drenched in motor oil, which had leaked from the air intake hose.
