With drone sales soaring, YVR launches safety campaign to remind users to prioritize safety and keep these unmanned vehicles away from airports.

With retail drone sales soaring during the past holiday season, Vancouver Airport Authority (YVR) has teamed up with aviation partners to launch a drone safety campaign aimed at highlighting the risks associated with flying unmanned aircraft near airports.

“Innovation and safety are two of YVR’s core values,” said Steve Hankinson, vice president, operations, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We recognize the amazing potential for drones to improve a variety of processes, but we’re asking the public to prioritize safety and never fly one near an airport.”

Flying any unmanned aircraft within nine kilometres of an airport is extremely dangerous and

could pose a serious threat to other aircraft.

“YVR’s campaign is helping to create awareness about the very real dangers and consequences of flying a drone near an airport,” said the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport. “....I encourage all new drone users to learn the rules of the sky on our website.”

Investigations of incidents involving improper drone use are on the rise in British Columbia.

Since the beginning of 2015, nearly half of all incidents investigated by Transport Canada have been in this province.

YVR’s public-education campaign is designed to remind the community of the potential catastrophic consequences of

flying drones in a restricted airspace. Components of the campaign include “No Drone Zone” signage at key locations across YVR’s Sea Island home, advertising and community outreach at public events.

“The safe operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), more commonly known as drones, is a community responsibility,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, Richmond RCMP. “We have the luxury of having a world-class international airport in our community. Let’s keep our community safe.”

Major infrastructure renewal project to modernize radar systems at 12 Canadian airports Civil air navigation services provider NAV Canada is embarking on a multi-year project to upgrade Terminal Surveillance Radar (TSR) at 12 Canadian airports.

The project will be phased in starting with five major airports, with work underway at Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton.

The total investment for this infrastructure renewal project will be more than $125-million.

“These radar systems are over 30 years old and are nearing the end of their lifecycle,” said Kim Troutman, vice president, engineering. “Radar is one of the key surveillance sources for air traffic control and will continue to be an indispensable tool for the mid- and long-term in its existing role and as a complement to satellite-based ADS-B surveillance.”

The transport ministry of Japan has decided to install body scanners at all of its international airports by 2020.

The deployment of body scanners by the ministry is an attempt to prevent dangerous objects from being carried on planes that can be possible threats to passengers and crew.

Weak radio waves are beamed by the body scanners to detect any objectionable objects hidden under clothing.

According to news reports, Japan trialled the body scanners from October to December 2015 at three airports, Kansai, Haneda and Narita.

The results of the trial confirmed that the checks were fast, taking 10 to 20 seconds per passenger without obstructing traffic flow.

The body contours of checked passengers were not probed and the data was deleted immediately after the check was completed.

Body scanners are widely used in the U.S. and European countries.

Aeromexico signs code-share agreement with WestJet Aeromexico and WestJet, which have had an interline relationship since December 2011, have signed a new codeshare agreement.

The agreement will give Aeromexico’s customers enhanced connecting service via Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal to more than 10 Canadian destinations including Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg,

Ottawa, Halifax, Deer Lake and St. John’s, among others.

The agreement provides WestJet guests with new connecting service from WestJet’s extensive Canadian network to Mexico City via Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. In addition, WestJet will also now sell non-stop flights to and from Mexico City from these cities.

able on these flights as well.

Both Aeromexico and WestJet will sell tickets for travel on each airline’s entire network including non-codesharing flights, providing its respective passengers with another benefit of the enhanced relationship.

Air Canada airlifts almost 1,500 Syrian refugees to Canada

With the arrival of an early morning Air Canada flight at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport earlier this month from Amman, Jordan, Air Canada completed the first of five flights operated on behalf of the Canadian Government that brought almost 1,500 Syrian refugees to Canada.

Air Canada and Air Canada rouge provided five flights as part of the operations led by

the International Organization for Migration in collaboration with Canadian authorities—two departing Amman with mainline Air Canada Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft configured to seat 298 passengers, and three with Air Canada rouge Boeing 767-300ER aircraft configured to seat 282 passengers.

The Canadian Government has committed to receiving 25,000 Syrian refugees.

Starting March 28, 2016, Philippine Airlines will adjust the operational schedule on its Manila – Vancouver – New York JFK route, which is currently served four times a week with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

At the start of summer 2016 service, the airline will unify its Manila – Vancouver eastbound schedule and the Vancouver – New York JFK schedule will shift to night-time arrival and midnight departure for New York.

Air Canada moves Vancouver-San Francisco route to mainline service

Air Canada is moving forward planned service changes for its Vancouver – San Francisco route.

From February 1, 2016, the airline will operate Airbus 319 and Embraer E190 aircraft on the route, originally planned to be used starting May 1, 2016.

Air Canada’s mainline service on this route will be replacing service by its rouge subsidiary.

Last month, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, announced an expanded Canada-China Air Transport Agreement that allows for new air services between additional cities in both countries.

The expanded agreement with China will increase the numbers of cities Canadian and

Chinese airlines can serve from 12 to 18 in the other partner’s territory.

China is Canada’s fifth largest international air travel market and second largest single-country trading partner. This expansion will allow airlines to provide greater choices for travellers and

help support increasing tourism and trade activity.

Reached under Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which encourages long-term, sustainable competition and the development of international air services, the expanded agreement builds on the 2005 Canada-China Air Transport Agreement, last amended in 2013.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to build on our positive air transportation relationship with China through this expanded air transport agreement,” said Transport Minister Garneau. “The agreement is good news for both business and tourism and we look forward to keeping the momentum going with this important international partner in the future.”

The new rights under this expanded agreement are now available for use by airlines.

An expanded Canada-Australia Air Transport Agreement announced last month, which allows airlines to serve any number of cities in Canada and Australia, is now in effect.

Under this expanded agreement, capacity available to Canadian and Australian airlines for services to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth will increase from 3,000 to 6,000 seats per week for each country, effective immediately.

Airline seat capacity between two countries’ airlines will be further increased to 9,000, starting in December 2016.

Expanded agreement with Australia provides more options for Canadians

Declines in air freight volumes bottoming

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released the latest data for global air freight markets, showing air cargo volumes (measured in Freight Tonne Kilometers), were down 1.2 per cent in November 2015, compared to November 2014.

Total cargo volumes, however, expanded compared to October 2015 and were higher than the low point in August.

“The freight performance in November was a mixed bag,” said Tony Tyloer, IATA’s director general and CEO. “Although the headline growth rate fell again, and the global economic outlook remains fragile, it appears that parts of Asia-Pacific are growing again and globally, export orders are looking better.

“In fact, the downward trend in FTK volumes appears to be bottoming out. But there is a great deal of uncertainty. The current volatility of stock markets shows how much the health of the global economy—upon which air cargo depends— remains on a knife-edge,” said Tyler.

The YVR Chapel, located at International Arrivals, Level 2, is open 24/7 and its team of chaplains and volunteers—available from 9am to 7pm daily—provide support, counsel, practical assistance and spiritual direction to people of all faiths and those of none.

Christmas was an exciting time at the YVR Chapel. In celebration of the season, a volunteer team decorated the Chapel’s reception room, providing a specially festive and welcoming space.

According to Dennis Kirkley, lead chaplain of the Vancouver Airport Chaplaincy (VAC), there was an increase in the number of passengers who visited the Chapel during this very busy travel season.

More than 100 airport employees attended the Chapel’s Christmas Drop-In, during which they enjoyed a cup of hot cider, treats from the Superstore and entered the special Christmas draw for a variety of donated prizes.

British Airways also hosted a tasty bake sale, donating earnings to the Chapel and for which the Chapel staff and volunteers expressed an appreciative thank-you.

ANA celebrates milestone number of Dreamliner flights

All Nippon Airways flies the Dreamliner aircraft as part of its scheduled service between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has become the first airline in the world to reach 100,000 787 Dreamliner flights. With this milestone, ANA has accumulated approximately a quarter of all 787 revenue flights.

ANA was the launch customer of the 787 Dreamliner family and in 2011 became the first airline to introduce the airplane

to passengers around the world.

Since then, the fuel-efficient airplane has enabled ANA to launch new routes worldwide, including North America, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Travelzoo predicts five ‘Wow Deal’ destinations for Canadians To help Canadians jumpstart their annual vacation planning and weather the storm of a Canadian dollar at its lowest level in more than a decade, Travelzoo, a global media commerce company, has announced five travel destinations that will offer Canadians the best value in 2016.

Travelzoo’s Wow Deal Experts predict deals up to 60 per cent off regular prices for travel to Iceland, the Dominican Republic, Poland, China and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

“Two factors driving this year’s picks are the depreciat-

ing loonie and additional flight options,” said Michael Duchesne, publisher for Travelzoo Canada.

“Canadians are looking to go where the dollar will go further, making Rio and Poland very appealing. And all of the destinations on the list have increased flight options for Canadians making airfares more competitive.”

Effective immediately, WestJet has ended its Price Drop Guarantee.

The airline’s price drop guarantee program began in September 2014 and was designed to encourage WestJet travellers to book their flights early. If after booking the flight, the price dropped, the

Price Drop Guarantee allowed a WestJet dollar rebate of the difference.

According to WestJet spokesperson Robert Palmer, even after the Price Drop Guarantee had been in place for more than a year, “awareness among our guests was low and it did not change

booking behaviour.”

WestJet plans to continue with low fares and periodic sales during 2016 to stimulate and increase travel on the airline.

The Price Drop Guarantee is still valid for all guests who booked WestJet flights prior to January 5, 2016.

Visitors to Thailand reminded to refrain from smoking in prohibited public areas As part of its Tobacco Control Law, which aims to promote a safe, clean and smoke-free environment, Thailand has begun a campaign to remind tourists and the general public to refrain from smoking in prohibited public areas.

Thailand became a party to the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on February 27, 2005. Since then, the country has banned smoking in almost all indoor public places, indoor workplaces and public transport.

Outdoor places where smoking is prohibited include facilities for exercise, sports training, sports playing, and sports competitions of every kind, public

parks, zoological parks, amusement parks, children’s playgrounds, and markets.

Under the current campaign, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports is working closely with tour companies and guides to seek cooperation from tourists to refrain from smoking in prohibited areas, especially at sports

complexes and tourist attractions nationwide.

However, international airports may have designated smoking areas and hotels may permit smoking in guest rooms. Nonair conditioned facilities serving food and/or drinks are smoke free only in the areas where food and/ or drinks are served.

Air France releases Travel Talk ‘Oh LaLa! Deals’ promotion

Air France has announced an Oh LaLa! Deals specially priced promotion, starting at $850 in Economy class, for flights to Paris.

Air France’s Premium Economy Class, which offers 40 per cent more space and allows a second free baggage as well as access to SkyPriority services, is also part of this promotion for an extra $250 per direction.

Business class fares are also on sale on flights booked for travel between May 7 to August 31.

A passenger wishing to travel

to Paris in Economy class and return in Business class will add both fares together and divide the total by two to obtain the total Air France’s fares include a free stopover in Paris either on the outbound or the return segment of the trip.

The promotion runs until February 4, and applies to trips with departures between May 7 to June 18 and between September 11 to October 15.

A complimentary in-flight meal, breakfast or snack is served in every seat class, along

with alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages.

Flights can be booked online on the airline’s website, via its call centre at 1 800 667 2747, or through a travel agency.

A new generation of kiosk, which has been jointly developed

by Air France-KLM and technology provider SITA, is now in operation at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports as well as Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Range Rover rear sway bar replacement

Many items found on Range Rovers are far from simple, and the rear sway bar is no exception.

The Range Rover’s sway bars are part of the vehicle’s stability control system and incorporate a hydraulic unit capable of isolating both sides of the bar.

Our featured vehicle, a 2011 Range Rover, was brought to our auto repair shop with its dash warning light on—an indication of a stability control malfunction.

Diagnosis found the fluid level low in the underhood reservoir, which was traced to a leak in the rear sway bar hydraulic unit.

lic unit is a non-repairable part and must be replaced as a complete unit. Since the part is buried deep under the rear of the vehicle above the differential and requires the body to be lifted from the frame to remove and reinstall the unit, this repair can be expensive.

Sway bars are found on most cars and light trucks, its primary purpose is to reduce body roll went cornering and making high speed manoeuvers. Its system components include a metal bar attached to the vehicle frame, which extends to each control arm or strut through an end link.

Bars connect both sides of each axle together.

While this generally works well, this is a mechanical component that functions the same under all conditions.

Sometimes it is advantageous to change the tension of the sway bar, even disconnecting the two sides of the car completely. This is what the Range Rover’s system does.

Among the many amazing features on a Range Rover is a very advanced suspension system. The vehicle features air suspension that allows the driver to adjust the vehicle’s height.

Terrain control is another good feature available on Range Rovers. Drivers can adjust the knob located on the center console for different road and climate conditions—steep hills, snow and sand, rocks or just normal pavement.

The terrain control system incorporates a number of components and controls the transfer case and differentials, suspension height and response and also the sway bars. It is also able to decouple them to allow individual, extra travel in the suspension system—an extremely useful feature during extreme off-road use.

While 99 per cent of Range Rovers in the Vancouver area never go off road, it is one of the most capable vehicles than can do so. However, with beautiful paint, low profile tires and wheels and a cost of more than $100,000, it is difficult to criticize owners for staying on the paved highway.
