The YVR Environment team laid waste to the competition at the Airports Council InternationalNorth America (ACI-NA) Environmental Achievement Awards, taking home the top prize in the Outreach, Education and Community Involvement Category for YVR’s Waste Wars program.

Vancouver Airport Authority’s Waste Wars project was launched on July 13, 2015, and ran until August 31, 2015. Thanks to the efforts of the YVR Environment Team and strong participation from partners in programs, such as Waste Wars, during the month of September 2015, YVR had a 52 per cent diversion rate— the best for 2015. Additionally, during the four busiest months

of 2015, YVR diverted more than 50 per cent of waste from landfill, which was in line with its Environmental Management Plan target for 2020.

Overall, YVR managed to go from a 36 per cent diversion rate in 2014 to a 46 per cent diversion rate in 2015.

According to ACI-NA, Vancouver Airport Authority won the outreach award for its Waste Wars project, which was designed to increase composting from airport food and beverage tenants while reducing overall solid waste. This project involved a robust airport tenant training and engagement pro-

gram and contributed towards the airport’s commitment of 50 per cent waste diversion from landfills by 2020.

The award is a major recognition and speaks to the innovative approach the Vancouver Airport Authority has taken towards reaching ambitious sustainability goals

by 2020. The program was a huge success with 100 per cent participation rate from airport vendors.

YVR’s new hybrid bus fleet is another example of the airport’s commitment to using innovative passenger technology to drive sustainability.

Orange and purple is the new green. Vancouver International Airport became the first airport in Canada to introduce hybrid buses when YVR recently unveiled a new fleet for the jetSet parking product.

The new vehicles have many features that make them more sustainable, wheelchair accessible and safer for passengers.

Some key features: • Wider doors and Lift-U ramp system improves

accessibility for passengers using a wheelchair • The bus kneels to provide easier access • High-mounted engine reduces curbside noise • Integrated cooling system improves performance and fuel economy • Fiberglass shell requires no paint, reducing VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions • All-wheel disc brakes improve braking distance

and stability for maximum safety • Uses 30 per cent less fuel than the previous buses These attractive new buses will get plenty of use as they safely transport passengers from the airport terminals to their vehicles. Additionally they are expected to play a large part in helping YVR reach its target of a 33 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 as part of its Environmental Management Plan.

Starting in June 2016, WestJet will offer two new, non-stop seasonal domestic routes from YVR to the cities of London and Hamilton, Ontario.

Starting June 29 to September 5, 2016, WestJet will offer four-time weekly, non-stop service to London, Ontario, with flights leaving YVR at 10:15am and arriving at London International Airport (YXU) at 4:27pm. The aircraft will leave YXU at 5:30pm and arrive at YVR at 7:18pm.

From June 30 to September 4, 2016, the airline will offer three-time weekly, non-stop service to Hamilton, Ontario.

So, from the sublime to the less lofty, more than 120 Sea Island employees shared their thoughts, which were then provided as a visual demonstration on “hearts” at the Chapel’s bulletin board.

One of the highest-flying sporting events in the whole world will soar in to YVR this month as the exciting HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series lands in Vancouver.

“We are thrilled YVR will welcome the world’s best Sevens athletes and fans to the HSBC Canada Sevens Vancouver Men’s Rugby Tournament,” said Anne Murray, vice president, marketing & communications, Vancouver Airport Authority.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series is one of the most dynamic global sporting events on the market, featuring the dynamism of sevens rugby, paired with a spectacle of entertainment and fan engagement that is second to none.

The Series in 2015-16 will include 10 tournaments held around the world, in which 16 national sevens teams compete for World Series points at each round, with winners in the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield crowned at each location.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series is culminated with a champion being crowned at the end of the season based on total Series points.

Founded in 2012 by B.C. pilot Kirsten Brazier, The Sky’s No Limit—Girls Fly Too program focuses on helping females discover the amazing opportunities available to them in aviation, aerospace, marine and defense, by providing mentoring partnerships with industry, leadership

activities, public education and annual hands-on outreach events.

One such event will be held on March 12 and 13 at Abbotsford International Airport and representatives of YVR will be on hand to support first-time flyers in a weekend of fun and new adventures. This event is open to the public and families are welcome.

CAE to develop Wildfire Training and Simulation Centre in B.C. CAE, a Montreal-based simulation and training equipment and services company, has signed an agreement with Abbotsfordbased Conair to develop a Wildfire Training and Simulation Centre in B.C. Under the terms of the agreement, the Wildfire Training and Simulation Centre will feature a CAE-built Avro RJ85 full-flight simulator qualified to Level D, the highest qualification for flight simulators.

Conair will procure long-term pilot training services from CAE to train its pilots who provide

aerial fire suppression services using Conair’s RJ85 Airtanker aircraft.

“We are excited by the prospect of expanding CAE’s already substantial footprint in Canada to British Columbia and applying our world-class training system integration expertise to public safety and security,” said Mike Greenley, vice president and general manager, CAE Canada. “Simulationbased training is ideal for safely and cost-effectively preparing people who must operate in challenging and often danger-

ous conditions and our Wildfire Training and Simulation Centre will offer world-class training programs for preparing to fight wildfires.”

In addition to the training program for RJ85 aerial firefighting pilots, CAE expects the Wildfire Training and Simulation Centre to be part of a distributed simulation network that connects wildfire training and coordination centres throughout Canada for purposes of conducting simulation-based mission rehearsal for wildfire response.

The new Wildfire Training and Simulation Centre

Over the next several months, CAE and Conair expect to identify training centre facility requirements and location, begin procurement of the RJ85 fullflight simulator and engage other potential clients in Canada and internationally.

CAE has also signed a contract with Defence Research and Development Canada’s

Centre for Security Science (DRDC CSS) and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) to conduct a comprehensive training needs analysis that will provide the foundation for more effective training solutions related to wildfire fighting.

This work is funded through the Canadian Safety and Security Program (CSSP), a federal program led by DRDC CSS, in partnership with Public Safety Canada.

Air Canada’s fleet renewal to include Bombardier C Series

The Bombardier C Series is a family of narrow-body, twin-engine, medium-range jet airliners currently under development by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier Aerospace. The C Series models are the 110seat CS100 and the 135-seat CS300.

Air Canada will purchase up to 75 Bombardier CS300 aircraft as part of its narrowbody fleet renewal plan. The order includes substitution rights to CS100 aircraft in certain circumstances.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2019 and extend to 2022.

According to Bombardier, the C Series family of aircraft is a 100 per cent all-new design. By focusing on the 100- to 150-seat market segment, Bombardier has designed the C Series aircraft to deliver an economic advantage for operators and to open up new opportunities for single-aisle air-

craft operations.

The first 25 aircraft on delivery will replace Air Canada’s existing mainline fleet of Embraer E190 aircraft, with the incremental aircraft supporting Air Canada’s hub and network growth, creating one of the world’s youngest, most fuelefficient airline fleets.

The C Series purchase is subject to completion of final documentation and satisfaction of certain other closing conditions precedent.

The acquisition of the C Series aircraft represents a key element of Air Canada’s narrow-

body fleet renewal program and complements the acquisition of 61 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft announced in December 2013 to replace the larger end of the airline’s mainline narrowbody fleet.

The Boeing agreement provides for Boeing to purchase up to 20 of the 45 Embraer E190 aircraft in Air Canada’s fleet and the first 25 C Series will replace the remaining E190s.

Boeing 737 MAX deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2017 and extend to 2021, while the C Series deliveries are scheduled to start in late 2019 and extend to 2022.

Air Canada named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers Air Canada has been named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2016, recognizing the airline’s success in such areas as promoting women and fostering an inclusive workplace for its 28,000 employees.

Now entering its 10th year, the Canada’s Best Diversity Employers competition recognizes the nation’s leaders in creating inclusive workplaces for employees from five diverse groups: women; visible minorities; persons with disabilities; Aboriginal peoples; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) peoples.

Employers are selected by the editors at Mediacorp based on submissions to the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which has been published annually since 1999.

In citing Air Canada, Mediacorp noted that 43 per cent of middle managers and 32 per cent of its vice-presidents are women and that Air Canada maintains three diversity com-

mittees across Canada.

Each year, Air Canada reports on its progress with respect to diversity in Citizens of the World, Air Canada’s Corporate Sustainability Report available at aircanada.ca.

Highlights from the forthcoming report include: • There are an estimated 60 languages spoken by Air Canada employees and 20 per cent of employees belong to visible minorities; • Air Canada employs more than 300 individuals selfidentified as disabled;

• Since 1993, Air Canada has been a sponsor of The Indspire Awards to recognize indigenous professionals and youth with outstanding career achievements. Recipients are chosen to serve as role models for all indigenous peoples.

• Air Canada has signed the Catalyst Accord, an undertaking sponsored by the internationally-recognized group, Catalyst, committing to increase the number of women on its Board of Directors to 25 per cent by 2017.

Air Transat mobile app provides more in-flight entertainment options Air Transat has introduced an app-based in-flight entertainment (IFE) service for passengers on its Boeing 737 narrow-body jets.

The CinePlus B app, available for download from the App Store, allows users to access a selection of movies and TV series on their iOS mobile devices and then watch the content once on board the aircraft.

The IFE service features Hollywood-approved Digital Rights Management (DRM)

technology and is integrated with the airline’s reservations system to manage content viewing windows and ensure passengers can only watch the content in-flight.

Another app, called CinePlus A, was already available for passengers flying on Air Transat’s Airbus A310 aircraft.

The procedure for accessing the on-demand in-flight entertainment system is available on the Air Transat website at airtransat.com.

Airline Routes

Air Transat’s CinePlus app keeps passengers entertained with a selection of movies and TV programs that can be viewed in-flight.

Air Transat and its pilots reach agreement Last month, Air Transat and its more than 500 pilots reached a tentative agreement renewal of the collective agreement that expired in April 2015.

The agreement, the approval of which will be recommended by the union executive, is being submitted to the airline’s pilots.

“We have reached a reasonable agreement that is satisfactory to both parties and we are confident that it will be approved by all the pilots,” said Jean-François Lemay, general manager, Air Transat. “The threat of an imminent strike has been averted.”

Air Transat pilots had voted 97 per cent in favour of a strike if a new agreement was not reached by the end of February 2016.

The tentative agreement

follows more than a year of negotiations and federal conciliation.

If ratified later this month, it will run from May 1, 2015, until April 30, 2020.

Air Canada revises Vancouver-LA service Air Canada has further revised planned service on its Vancouver – Los Angeles route, which will replace current rouge operation from May 1, 2016.

Previously planned fivetime daily Airbus A320 services has been revised to three-time daily Airbus A30, daily Airbus A319 and daily Airbus A321 services.

New OSS option made available to speed up connections for air travellers The Government of Canada is implementing a new One Stop Security (OSS) arrangement for flights from Europe and the U.S. that connect through some Canadian airports.

Under the OSS arrangement, passengers and their belongings that have been screened at their point of departure may not have to go through additional screening at participating Canadian airports where they have connecting flights.

The OSS initiative is made

possible when two or more countries agree that their aviation security standards are equivalent.

Existing high security standards found in Canadian airports will not be impacted as a result of OSS. “Allowing more rapid travel times through Canadian airports means that travellers can get home to their families faster, meet up with friends more quickly or get their business done more efficiently,” said Marc Garneau, Minister of

The Canadian Airports Council, the industry voice for Canada’s airports and the National Airlines Council of Canada both applauded the OSS implementation as an example of governments working together to the benefit of passengers.

Since OSS will not be mandatory, its benefits to passengers and industry will depend on which airports and airlines apply the initiative.

IFALPA supports prohibition of lithium-ion batteries on passenger flights

The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) has stated its support for the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) recent decision to prohibit lithium-ion batteries as freight on passenger aircraft.

The prohibition was first proposed by IFALPA to the ICAO Dangerous Goods Panel in 2009 and again in 2015.

“We are extremely gratified that ICAO has acted on this longstanding safety concern, moving to protect passengers and crews from the dangers posed by shipments of lithium-ion batteries,” said Mark Rogers, IFALPA’s Dangerous Goods Committee chairman. “The risk these batteries pose is the same regardless of the aircraft type, however, and we now call on ICAO to extend the same protections to cargo aircraft.”

IFALPA represents in excess of 100,000 pilots in more than 100 countries worldwide. Its stated mission is to be the global voice of airline pilots, promoting the highest level of aviation safety and security worldwide.

Vancouver Airport Authority’s extensive and impressive art collection helps give YVR a unique sense of place. The spectacular visual display gives visitors a unique journey of Land, Sea and Sky, with each terminal building strategically representing the culture heritage, natural beauty and iconic experiences that embody British Columbia.

In no particular order, here is a description of 10 stunning works of art at YVR. The Rivers Monument by Marianne Nicolson One of the newer pieces at YVR, this artwork was unveiled at the opening of the A-B Connector at YVR in January 2015.

Rivers Monument consists

of two innovative glass-etched poles that reference the power and abundance of river systems.

In particular, it is a monument to the Columbia and Fraser rivers, which carried a wealth of many ancient names from the Indigenous Nations that fished and managed them.

Nicolson seeks to depict the declining fish runs and the flooding in 1957 of thousands of pic-

Spirit of Haida Gwaii: Jade Canoe by Bill Reid The natural nexus point of YVR, where passengers can always be found congregated around this sculpture snapping photos. Originally conceived and created for the new Canadian embassy in Washington D.C., The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: Jade Canoe was first created in 1986 as a 1/6-scale clay maquette. It

was enlarged to a full-scale clay model in 1988.

In 1989, a mould was taken from the full-scale model and the sculpture was cast in plaster for further refinement. Later that year, the plaster pattern was completed and sent to Tallix Foundry in New York State.

The first bronze casting, titled The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Black Canoe, was completed in 1991 and donated to Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada (the Government of Canada) by Nabisco Brands Ltd., Toronto, Canada. It was put on display in November 1991 at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC. A second and final casting, titled The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe, was commissioned by the Vancouver International Airport Authority in 1993. It was completed at the Tallix Foundry under the supervision of Bill Reid and installed at YVR to welcome visitors from around the world on April 18, 1996. It also appeared on the back of the old $20 bill.

Flight (Spindle Whorl) by Susan Point This stunning artwork greets international visitors as they descend from the arrivals level into Canada Customs at YVR. Flight spindle whorl is the world’s largest and relates to the large-scale weavings included in this contemporary art installation.

The spindle whorl uses traditional images to depict the theme of flight. The eagle, which is considered a symbol of power, is designed around the image of a man with raised arms, welcoming visitors and also gesturing flight. On the chests of the men are salmon motifs to represent the Coast Salish people, who still live and fish along these shores.

The Hetux by Connie Watts This breathtaking bird greets travellers arriving from the United States on Level 4 in the Pacific Passageway.

According to Watts, the conception of Hetux began from traditional, historic First Nations’ family crests used as a means of identifying families and lineage.

Watts has taken this concept and applied it to an individual personality.

The thunderbird, together with all the other creatures, is her grandmother. The wolves (intensity and determination) on either side of the body are her stature.

The male and female salmon on the belly reflect her generosity and prosperity. The hummingbird (joy and energy) and moon (intuition and perceptiveness) on the wing are her actions and interpretations. The sun (logic and power) on the tail is her guidance. The small wren (magic and fortuity) on the neck is ever present.

The materials are stained bal-

tic birch and powder-coated aluminium. Other elements reflect characteristics of her grandmother — the wood and metal combine soft and hard and the primary colours are dominant and strong.

Musqueam Welcome Figures by Susan Point These two Welcome Figures display a traditional Coast Salish welcome to travellers. Carved in red cedar, the Welcome Figures exhibit the traditional carving style of the Coast Salish people. The back panels have been carved with sand to make them appear ancient, providing a unique contrast to the contemporary glass panels, which are carved with the image of an eagle, mounted in the centre.

Passengers always pause and stare as soon as they enter the Customs hall.

Celebrating Flight by Don Yeomans The intention of the pole’s artist, Don Yeomans, is to honour humankind for transcending our

earthbound existence by creating machines that enable us to fly.

At the top of the pole is the Creator Raven and below him is the figure of man, given a high rank because of intelligence and ingenuity.

Below are Thunderbird, Whale, Eagle, Bear and Frog, all important creatures with strength and power in Haida mythology.

While these Northwest Coast images help establish a sense of place at YVR, the references to European and Asian cultures that also appear on the pole are especially relevant in a large, busy international airport where people from many nations come together on their journeys.

Fog Woman & Raven by Dempsey Bob Located in the International Departures area, this captivating sculpture tells the story of the origins of the annual salmon run.

Carved from a red cedar log, Raven is perched on the side of the pool looking satisfied, while Fog Woman, carved from a block

of laminated yellow cedar, kneels at the head of the stream that flows toward the river and the ocean.

In Bob’s telling, Fog Woman created and controlled the salmon. Raven, a greedy and cunning trickster married Fog Woman to have access to all her sweet, sweet salmon. When Fog Woman realized she was being used for her salmon, she retreated into the fog, taking all the salmon with her, but allowing them to return once a year to spawn.

Clayquot Welcome Figures by Joe David Carved by Joe David in the Clayquot tradition of the Nuuchah-nulth people, these welcome figures are based on those that would be placed on the beach in front of a village or a big house to greet guests.

The male figure wears the traditional knobbed hat of a highranking person, such as a whaling chief, while the female figure wears the more common domed hat. The figures are carved from

cedar logs salvaged from West Coast beaches and stand with open arms to greet international visitors as they arrive to Canada.

Raven Stealing the Beaver Lake by Reg Davidson This is a 7.31-metre carved cedar pole located at the top of C Pier at YVR, which illustrates an episode of the Haida creation myth in which the Beaver people brought Raven to their great house and provided him with meals of salmon.

The Blind Halibut Fisherman and Raven with a Broken Beak sculptures were inspired by a Haida myth in which Raven attempted to play a joke on an old, blind man.

Near the sculptures is a large bentwood box, which is traditionally used to store ceremonial regalia and other precious objects.

K’san Totem Poles by several artists Located across the road

from International Arrivals at the entrance to Chester Johnson Park, these three red cedar totem poles were carved in 1970 by Gitksan carvers in a style originating at the Gitanmaax School of Art at Hazelton on the Skeena River. Part of the Museum of Vancouver’s permanent collection, the totems have been placed there by Vancouver Airport Authority.

On each pole, a variety of spiritual and supernatural beings or crests portray stories associated with the cultural heritage of the carvers. Poles are “read” from the top down.

Harbour Air, North America’s first carbon neutral airline, has worked to manage its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) through Offsetters Climate Solutions carbon reduction and offsetting since 2007.

Harbour Air Seaplanes carried more than 350,000 passengers on its routes in 2014, with the airline offsetting 100 per cent of its emissions associated with seaplane fuel use and corporate operations.

Combined, this resulted in the airline offsetting more than 10,000 tCO2e, equivalent to taking approximately 2,300 cars off the road. Of this footprint, 94 per cent comes from seaplane fuel use.

For example, flying from Vancouver to Victoria – Harbour Air Seaplanes’ busiest route— each passenger emits approximately eight kilograms of CO2e per passenger per flight.

“Harbour Air is proud to be North America’s first carbon neutral airline offsetting all GHG emissions from flight and corporate operations since 2007, with the help of Offsetters,” said Meredith Moll, vice president of sales and marketing at Harbour Air. “We thank our passengers and our staff for their commitment to our carbon neutral program, which has been an important part of Harbour Air’s commitment to environmental sustainability.”

Harbour Air’s offsets have contributed to the protection of the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii through the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project.

This project covers more than seven-million hectares and is an Improved Forest Management project along the North and Central-Mid Coast of British Columbia.

The airline has also invested in Offsetters Climate Solutions’ Ugandan Wood Cookstoves program, which replaces conventional cookstoves with a more efficient stove. Over the past two years, offsets from Harbour Air passengers have subsidized over 7,000 cookstoves.

Boeing develops self-cleaning lavatory Boeing engineers and designers have developed a self-cleaning lavatory prototype that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to kill 99.99 per cent of germs.

The cleaning system can disinfect all surfaces after every use in just three seconds.

Boeing believes this selfcleaning technology, combined with touchless features, will enhance the passenger experience on commercial flights.

The lavatory uses Far UV light that would be activated only when the lavatory is unoccupied.

Far UV is different from the UVA or UVB light in tanning beds, and is not harmful to people.

Boeing engineers have shown through testing on their prototype that this innovation can minimize the growth and potential transmission of micro-organisms.

Boeing has filed for a patent on this concept.

during a flight,” said Jeanne Yu, Boeing commercial airplanes director of environmental performance. “In the prototype, we position the lights throughout the lavatory so that it floods the touch surfaces like the toilet seat, sink and countertops with the UV light once a person exits the lavatory. This sanitizing even helps eliminate odors.”

The cleaning system, which will require further study before it can be offered to airlines, would lift and close the toilet seat by itself so that all surfaces are exposed during the cleaning cycle.

The design also incorporates a hands-free faucet, soap dispenser, trash flap, toilet lid and seat and a hand dryer.

A hands-free door latch and a vacuum vent system for the floor are also under study, all to keep the lavatory as hygienic as possible between scheduled cleaning.

“Some of the touchless features are already in use on some Boeing airplanes today,” said Yu. “But combining that with the new UV sanitizing will give passengers even more protection from germs and make for an even better flying experience.”

Paint booth that reduces CO2 emissions

Airbus has designed and built an innovative paint booth for its new-generation A350 XWB jetliner that uses significantly less energy than standard facilities, while also minimizing CO2 emissions.

Airbus’ current livery painting process requires a constant temperature of 21 to 26-degrees centigrade, as well as a humidity rate between 45 and 70 per cent.

This represents a particular challenge during summer and winter months, when more energy is needed to overcome hot or cold outside temperatures and maintain the necessary conditions for painting.

The new paint booth recovers heat from the paint shop using a rotary heat exchanger called an Enthalpic wheel. To complete the system, the project team replaced gas-heated boilers with a CO2 heat pump—heating water to 85-degrees centigrade and furnishing 2-degrees centigrade inside the booth, eliminating the CO2 emissions from gas combustion.

“The huge advantage of this project is that it can be applied across all our paint shops on other sites,” said Airbus project leader Pascal Danthony. “With a return on investment of four years, this project is really leading the way for future energy reductions and achieving zero CO2 emissions from our industrial processes.”

February 8, 2016, marked the start of the Lunar New Year and festivities throughout YVR welcomed the Year of the Monkey.

The Chinese lunar calendar is based on solar and lunar cycles, with each New Year falling on a different day of the Western solar calendar. In 2016, it runs from February 8 to January 27, 2017.

Running in cycles of 12, each year in the Chinese lunar cycle represents a different animal.

In its entirety, and in order, the rotating cycle of animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, with each animal corresponding to a zodiac sign.

Following a traditional welcome ceremony, YVR’s Lunar New Year celebrations kicked off with a Lion Dance in front of the Haida Gawaii, Spirit of the Jade Canoe sculpture. To the delight of spectators, the lions danced from the International to the Domestic terminals to the beat of drums, gongs and cymbals, visiting some of YVR’s shops and restaurants.

The Lion Dance is an important Chinese cultural tradition that is used to scare evil spirits and open the door for all good things—health, happiness, wealth and prosperity in the year ahead.

Future Travel NASA Aeronautics proposes cleaner, quieter, faster aviation technology

According to future plans from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) federal budget request for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, 2016, the aviation industry stands on the cusp of a new era that is destined to be dramatically cleaner, quieter and faster.

If approved, 2017 will be the first year in a 10-year plan by NASA Aeronautics to achieve huge goals in reducing fuel use, emissions and noise by the way aircraft are designed and operated in the air and on the ground.

One piece of this 10-year plan is New Aviation Horizons—an ambitious undertaking by NASA to design, build and fly a variety of flight demonstration vehicles, or X-planes.

The demos will include

advancements in lightweight composite materials that are needed to create revolutionary aircraft structures. These include an advanced fan design to improve propulsion and reduce noise in jet engines, designs to reduce noise from wing flaps and landing gear, shape-changing wing flaps and even coatings to prevent bug residue build-up on wings.

Researchers predict the tech could save the airline industry $255-billion accrued during the first 25 years after being put into service.

One of the first X-planes is expected to be a hybrid wing body shape, where the familiar tube-and-wing becomes a wing that blends into the body. It flies the same speeds as commercial transport aircraft.

Other X-planes will demonstrate specific technologies related to ultra-efficient subsonic aircraft designs in flight—possibilities include very long narrow wings, forms of electric propulsion, a double-wide fuselage, or engines embedded into the vehicle.

And in a world first, another X-plane will be a business-jetsized supersonic vehicle that burns low carbon bio-fuels and generates such quiet sonic booms that people on the ground will barely hear them.

NASA Aeronautics research takes place primarily at the Ames Research Center and Armstrong Flight Research Center in California, the Glenn Research Center in Ohio and the Langley Research Center in Virginia.

Record-breaking year for Richmond Film Office The City of Richmond’s film office had a record breaking year in 2015, setting new highs for filming days and revenues.

Extended Richmond location filming by the blockbuster hit movie Deadpool and the continued success of ABC’s popular Once Upon A Time helped ensure Richmond will continue to be seen on both big and small screens for the foreseeable future.

Deadpool and Once Upon a Time combined for more than 50 filming days in Richmond in 2015. The Motion Picture Association - Canada recently reported that those two productions alone have pumped more than $316-million into the B.C. economy.

Meanwhile, local filming is continuing on the latest instalment of the Planet of the Apes movie franchise, which has been on location in Richmond since July of 2015.

In all, 14 feature films and nine TV series were shot on location in Richmond in 2015 for a record 189 filming days. The filming generated more than $450,000 in service and location charges for the City of Richmond, a new record and more than double the 2014 total.

Nikkei Stories come to life in historic Steveston Documentary and technology have been combined to bring to life the Nikkei Stories, a 10-video series to commemorate the history of the Japanese Canadian community of Steveston.

The best way to enjoy the films is to take a self-guided walking tour of Steveston, where 10 red-and-black interactive signs are displayed. Each sign corresponds with one of the videos of the Nikkei Stories and the locations link to the Japanese community’s history in Steveston. These interpretive signs include a map, a QR code and a link to the Nikkei Stories website.

With the use of the City of Richmond app, a smartphone becomes a window into history during the walking tour. An iBeacon

is attached to each interpretive sign, which detects the RichmondBC app and sends a notification to view the relevant video as tour participants walk past the sign. The videos can also be viewed at any time on the app by clicking on the Explore tab and then selecting Steveston Museum and Points of Interest.

The importance of car shock absorbers Shock absorbers, or shocks, and Macpherson struts, or struts, as they are commonly known, are vital components of a vehicle’s suspension system.

All vehicles have a suspension system designed to allow its wheels to move up and down independently from the car’s body and frame. Without a suspension system, every bump in the road would cause the vehicle to shake and jar to such an extent that it’s occupants would consider walking a more comfortable transportation alternative.

The suspension system begins with the wheels, which are attached to the vehicle’s frame with a steering knuckle and control arm(s). A spring is included to isolate movement and the shock absorber to dampen the spring’s bounce.

The Macpherson strut suspension is a simplified one that uses the top of a telescopic damper as the upper steering pivot.

This eliminates the need for the

upper control arm and incorporates the shock absorber inside a long tube (strut) along with the spring.

The Macpherson strut system reduces the number of components needed and is a popular choice, due to its simplicity and low manufacturing cost.

However, it can be more costly to repair due to more expensive parts and a longer labour process.

Shocks and struts perform many critical functions and while it is obvious when they are fully worn, for safety reasons they should be replaced before that happens. In addition to safety, replacing shocks before they are completely worn saves costly replacement of other vehicle components.

For example, worn shocks will cause tires to wear in unusual ways, causing unnecessary damage to the tire’s tread. Poor or worn shocks can also cause a vehicle to ‘dive’ when braking,

ships currently registered nationwide to participate. By lending their name to the cause, auto dealers are joining forces in their communities to say: “We are not okay with distracted driving.”

Throughout the month of March, customers who visit participating dealerships will be asked to make a personal pledge against the fatal behaviour and make a formal commitment to improve road safety by not driving distracted.

The campaign aims to educate drivers on the easy and simple solutions to resist the urge to drive distracted, such as pairing to blue tooth and securing potential distractions before starting a trip.

Does your car dip or swerve under braking? If so, the shock absorbers should be checked. If a vehicle dips or swerves under braking it decrease the driver’s control, which can be very dangerous in wet weather.

Vibrations If shocks are working properly, the vehicle’s tires will be kept in optimal contact with the road surface and there should not be any vibrations felt through the steering wheel. If vibrations occur at higher speeds, overall control of the vehicle by the driver will be decreased.

Car sliding & veering Shocks should be checked if the vehicle slides or veers on the road when being driven in mild wind conditions.

Rocking & rattling If the vehicle rattles and rocks over bumps, railway tracks and uneven surfaces it is highly likely its shocks are heavily worn.

Along with an unpleasant ride,

this rocking and rolling can cause unnecessary pressure on other components in the vehicle and should be seen to as soon as possible.

Uneven tire wear If there are bald patches or uneven wear visible on the tires, this usually means they are not receiving optimal contact with the road surface. This will have an affect on car control and tire grip and both tires and shocks should be checked and replaced.

TRAVEL ADVISORY Top 5 facts you should know about Zika virus before you travel Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Cover up and use insect repellent. Use bed nets; use them also to cover playpens, cribs or strollers, and stay in well enclosed air-conditioned rooms.

The mosquitoes that transmit Zika virus are different from those we encounter in Canada. The Zika virus is transmitted by a mosquito that can bite in daylight and evening hours.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for Zika virus. The best way to protect against Zika is to prevent mosquito bites.

Zika virus can cause fever, rash, joint and muscle pain, lack of energy, weakness, headaches and red eyes.

If you develop symptoms during or after travel, see a health care provider and tell them where you’ve been travelling or living.

Pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant should discuss their travel plans with their health care provider to assess their risk and consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus is circulating and countries in tropical and subtropical regions where the virus has the potential to circulate.
