Xiamen Airlines will fly a thrice-weekly, nonstop flight between Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) in China to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) starting July 25, 2016, subject to final government approvals.

This will mark the first time the airline will provide service to North America.

“We are thrilled to welcome Xiamen Airlines to YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This new route and destination will provide access to new markets for business and leisure for both Canadian and Chinese travellers. YVR now has more Chinese carriers than any airport in the Americas or Europe, which is

testament to Xiamen Airlines and its support of YVR as the gateway airport between the Americas and Asia.”

Headquartered in Xiamen, Xiamen Airlines carries passengers to 56 destinations in Mainland China, 16 destinations in Greater China and serves 320 routes internationally.

Passengers arriving in Xiamen can easily connect onward to major cities in China and Asia.

Vancouver is the airline’s 73rd destination and will also be an added value to the network, meeting the demand of tourists, tradesmen and businessmen of the two countries.

YVR is the first airport in the world to win the title seven years in a row, breaking the record for consecutive Skytrax awards.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards are based on

13.2-million passenger surveys conducted in 555 airports around the world and is the world’s largest independent airport customer satisfaction survey.

The survey measures 39 elements in the airport travel experience including check-in to security and border clearance processes, comfort, efficiency, signage, transportation availability, passenger ameni-

ties and friendliness.

During this year’s Spring Break period, YVR ran a contest giving visitors the chance at winning one-million Aeroplan Miles. Visitors to any of the airport’s stores, restaurants or service locations received a unique promo code to enter the contest and a chance to win.

“We were thrilled with the feedback and interest from all who entered this unique contest,” said Sue Stein, direc-

“We received more than 15,000 entries over a three-week period in March, which was a huge success!”

Capture Photography Festival coming to YVR People who take the Canada Line to YVR will notice some new images adorning the walkway as part of the 2016 Capture Photography Festival.

Launched in 2013, the annual not-for-profit Capture Photography Festival strives to nurture emerging talent, engage community and spark public dialogue about photography as an art form and a vessel for communication.

YVR Airport Station will play host to an exhibit featuring the works of Ted Grant, widely regarded as the father of Canadian photojournalism.

The Capture Photography Festival runs from April 1 to April 28, 2016, after which Grant’s photos will remain on display until fall 2016.

Grant is a true legend of the photography field and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2016. He had a proclivity for shooting in black and white: “When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.”

Shot in 1968 by Ted Grant, this photo is a classic of Canadian photojournalism. Pierre Trudeau, father of current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, caught on camera as he slid down the bannister of Ottawa’s Chateau Laurier Hotel.

Grant was also known for never having his subjects pose.

One of his most famous photos is that of the late Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau sliding down a bannister while leaving Ottawa’s Chateau Laurier Hotel.

YVR launches new mobile optimized website Last month, Vancouver Airport Authority unveiled its new yvr.ca website for Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

‘The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe’ celebrates 20 years as YVR’s artistic focal point This month marks the 20th anniversary of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe arriving at YVR. This iconic piece by legendary Canadian artist Bill Reid serves as the natural nexus point for the entire airport, where the public and passengers meet prior to grand adventures and where countless photos have been taken over the past two decades.

Here are some interesting

facts about this famous statue: • In 1996, when the International Terminal Building first opened, The Jade Canoe had to be lifted and lowered through the skylights because it didn’t fit through the terminal’s doors • Considered as Bill Reid’s masterpiece, it took the Haida artist four years—1990 to 1994—to create • Before coming to YVR, the

sculpture was located at the Canadian Museum of History from 1994 to 1996. A plaster copy now resides at the museum • From 2004 to 2012, it was featured on the Canadian $20 bill. In 1996, it was included in Canada Post’s Masterpieces of Canadian art stamp series • There are 13 passengers on The Jade Canoe including

It is said that the luckiest part of the Canoe is on the Mouse Woman’s nose, which is noticeably worn • The sculpture was made in Reid’s studio on Granville Island, Vancouver, and then cast in bronze in 1994 at the Talix Foundry in Beacon, New York • It was first made with clay being placed on top of metal rods and mesh. Pieces of the canoe were then removed one by one to be casted into plaster • Although the sculpture is made of bronze, the green patina is meant to represent B.C.’s official gemstone: Jade • The person paddling near the back of The Jade Canoe, the Ancient Reluctant Conscript, is actually a self-portrait of Bill Reid • The Bear Mother and Dogfish woman both are wearing a labret, which extends their bottom lips and shows that they are women of high social standing

• The Raven at the back of The Jade Canoe is one of the most prominent figures in Haida mythology. He is known to be a trickster and his paddling is meant to represent the unpredictable nature of life. The Bear is wary of the Raven’s tricks and is keeping a close eye on him.

• The Mouse Woman is the Raven’s wise and ancient grandmother.

• The sculpture weighs approximately 4,900 kilograms, which is more than four Cessna 172 aircraft combined • The sculpture is 6.05-metres long, 3.89-metres high and 3.48-metres wide • The diverse group on board The Jade Canoe represent not just one people, but all living beings in the world. Even though they are struggling to get along on the crowded canoe—the wolf is biting the wing of the eagle, who is biting the paw of the bear— they are all going in the same direction, paddling and working with each other, as they are all on the journey of life together • There are two castings of the Canoe. The first one was completed in 1991 and

is located at the Canadian embassy in Washington D.C. It is titled The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Black Canoe • Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is a collection of islands on the Northwest coast of B.C. Haida Gwaii means “Islands of the People” • The Jade Canoe was first sculpted in 1986 as a 1/6scale clay model and then a full-scale clay model in 1988 • In the bear family, there is the Grizzly Bear Father, the Bear Mother, who is human, and then two bear cubs: one good and one bad • More than 10 people worked on the sculpture • While working on the clay model of the sculpture, Bill Reid jokingly called the canoe Ship of Fools • The Chief’s talking stick was carved by Don Yeomans, who later carved the Totem Pole Celebrating Flight in 2007, which is now in the Graham Clark Atrium in the Link building at YVR The legacy of Bill Reid (1920-1998) lives on at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, which is located in Downtown Vancouver.

Air Canada partners to introduce sustainable aviation biofuel Air Canada will participate in Canada’s Biojet Supply Chain Initiative (CBSCI), a three-year collaborative project with 14 stakeholder organizations to introduce 400,000 litres of biojet, a sustainable aviation biofuel, into a shared fuel system at a yet-to-be-determined Canadian airport.

Previous Air Canada biofuel flights used biojet that was segregated and loaded separately into an aircraft via tanker truck.

efficient operational framework that will introduce biojet into a multi-user, co-mingled airport fuel supply system.

The CBSCI project is a first in Canada and is aimed at creating a sustainable Canadian supply chain of biojet using renewable feedstocks.

Canada has abundant agricultural and forestry biomass resources, with globally recognized sustainable production and harvesting practices. The biojet used in this project will be sourced from commercially

available, certifiably sustainable Canadian oleochemical feedstocks using the Hydroprocessed Esters and a Fatty Acids (HEFA) conversion process.

The biojet will be blended with petroleum jet fuel to meet all technical quality specifications before being introduced into a shared fuel tank at a Canadian airport. The CBSCI project will also identify and help solve supply logistic barriers that arise when aviation biofuels are introduced at major Canadian airports.

Jasper National Park is the largest of Canada’s Rocky Mountain Parks with vast alpine meadows, glaciers and windswept ridges covering 11,228 square kilometers in all.

British Airways begins A380 Vancouver service May 2016 Airline Routes

The A380 cockpit’s main instrument panel has eight identical large interactive displays, with cursor control provided through a track-ball. These displays provide a much larger screen area with clearer presentations, augmented by a head-up display that increases pilot situational awareness—particularly during the approach and landing phases.

On Sunday May 1, 2016, Vancouver will be the first Canadian destination to be served

by British Airways’ Airbus 380800 superjumbo jet.

The A380 will replace British Airways’ Boeing 747-400, which currently serves the London Heathrow to YVR route.

The world’s largest commercial passenger aircraft, British Airways’ A380 can accommodate up to 469 customers in four cabins across two full decks. The First cabin features 14 luxurious suites with 30 per cent more personal space than the previous generation.

Despite having almost 50 per

Air Canada to offer WiFi aboard its international flights Starting this fall, Air Canada will offer satellite connectivity on its international flights, which will allow its customers to email, surf the internet and stream entertainment at broadband speeds while flying anywhere in the world.

The airline will begin install-

ing Gogo 2Ku satellite technology on its wide-body fleet, starting with its Boeing 777 aircraft.

At present, Air Canada is the only Canadian carrier to offer customers in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity across its entire fleet of narrow-body aircraft in North America.

Survey reveals North Americans are the heaviest fliers A Global Passenger Insights Survey conducted by The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) and released earlier this year is the first of its kind to quantify something that many have long suspected: North Americans are the heaviest fliers, with nearly

one-quarter of all fliers weighing more than 90 kilograms living in the region.

In contrast, Asia hosts 71 per cent of the world’s passengers under 69 kilograms.

Based on data from more than 3,400 travellers from 18 countries, the

APEX 2015 Global Passenger Insights Survey reveals crucial industry information on cabin comfort, in-flight connectivity and entertainment, as well as exactly what’s keeping passengers loyal—or what might be driving them away.

Hong Kong and Taiwan launch tourism partnership The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) have teamed to form a first-ever collaboration to promote more North American arrivals to the two destinations.

The joint initiative is one that will promote multi-destination travel in Asia to North American travellers, generating additional business for both destinations while providing

Canadian and American leisure travellers with some new travel options.

According to HKTB executive director Anthony Lau, there are currently more than 50 flights a week connecting Canada to Taiwan and Hong Kong and that number is expected to increase by 11 per cent in 2016.

Hong Kong and Taiwan are only about 80

minutes apart by air and are linked by more than 60 flights a day. Both destinations offer unique appeal in terms of the experiences provided to visitors.

Travellers from British Columbia have a combined total of 33 flights per week departing from YVR to the two destinations—21 to Hong Kong and 12 to Taipei, Taiwan.

Korea Tourism offers tourists free smartphone rentals The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has teamed with Samsung and communications giant SK Telecom to offer a free smartphone rental service for international visitors to South Korea.

Visitors arriving at South Korea’s Incheon International Airport can sign up for the Enjoy Mobile Korea service via the KTO website.

Each week, 250 winners will be selected at random to receive a free Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rental, including free voice calls, text messages and 1GB of data per day for up to five days.

In addition, KTO’s VisitKorea travel and tourism mobile app is also installed to make travelling in Korea more convenient for tourists. Users can access information such as themed travel, local maps, discount coupons and more.

The Enjoy Mobile Korea service will run until December 2016 and is expected to benefit approximately 12,000 tourists.

HondaJet debuts at Aero Expo, receives Mexican certification

The HondaJet is capable of flying at a maximum cruise altitude of 13,000 metres.

Honda’s first commercial aircraft, the HondaJet, made its debut at last month’s 2016 Aero Expo, Mexico’s most prominent business aviation event.

The HondaJet incorporates technological innovations in aviation design, including an Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration designed to improve performance and fuel efficiency by reducing aerodynamic drag.

The OTWEM design also reduces cabin sound, minimizes ground-detected noise, and allows for the roomiest cabin in its class, the largest baggage capacity and a fully serviceable private aft lavatory.

The HondaJet is also equipped with a Hondacustomized Garmin G3000 glass flight deck, which provides its pilots with a user-friendly visual scan of flight information in a concise format that contributes to improved situational awareness

and safety.

Manufactured at Honda Aircraft’s world headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, the HondaJet received U.S. Federal Aviation Administration type certification in December 2015.

The aircraft has also received type certification from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Mexico, the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil.

IATA names new director general The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has named Alexandre de Juniac, chairman and CEO of Air France-KLM, to succeed retiring director general and CEO, Tony Tyler.

With confirmation by the IATA Annual General Meeting to be held in early June, 2016, in Dublin, Ireland, de Juniac will take up duties as the head of the association after a short handover period.

De Juniac joins IATA from Air France-KLM where he has served as chairman and CEO since 2013. Prior to that, he was the chairman and CEO of Air France (2011-2013).

Boeing forecasts Latin American commercial fleet to triple by 2035

Boeing projects Latin American airlines will need 3,050 new airplanes valued at $350-billion in the next two decades, tripling the region’s current fleet size.

To meet increased passenger traffic, the region will require more than 2,500 new single-aisle airplanes over the next 20 years, reflecting the continued growth of

low-cost carriers and further expansion of networks in the region.

Widebody demand is forecasted at 340 new airplanes as regional carriers continue to compete more strongly on long-haul routes.

Latin America and the Caribbean now feature a younger fleet than the world aver-

age. Average airplane age in the region’s fleet continues to drop, going from more than 15 years in 2005 to less than 10 years today.

The region has been in a steady replacement cycle since the mid-2000s and Boeing is forecasting that trend will continue as nearly 60 per cent of the current fleet is replaced over the next two decades.

Port Metro Vancouver’s 2016 cruise season officially kicked off earlier this month with the arrival of the Star Princess cruise ship at Canada Place.

Vancouver expects to welcome approximately 830,000 passengers on 228 calls, this year, reflecting a forecasted three per cent increase in passenger volume over 2015.

“2016 marks the 30th anniversary of Canada Place,” said Robin Silvester, president and chief executive officer at Port Metro Vancouver. “Our awardwinning cruise facilities at Canada Place welcome thousands of visitors to beautiful Vancouver every year.”

The results of a joint passenger survey by Port Metro Vancouver, Tourism Vancouver, Destination B.C., and YVR in 2015 indicated an increased percentage of international cruise passengers coming to Vancouver,

boosting economic impact in the region.

Port Metro highlights in 2016 The return to Vancouver of the Disney Wonder cruise ship, as well as all Port Metro Vancouver’s homeported vessels from Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International.

Crystal Cruises returns to homeport in Vancouver, the first time since 2005, bringing more than 13,000 passengers and eight sailings on its Serenity.

Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam will make her inaugural call to Vancouver on April 30. The Nieuw Amsterdam will call Vancouver her homeport, offering 24 roundtrip sailings and bringing more than 100,000 passengers.

French cruise ship opera-

tor Compagnie Du Ponant’s 264-passenger ship Le Soleal will make her inaugural call on June 18.

Environmental stewardship is a priority for Port Metro Vancouver. In collaboration with the cruise industry and BC Hydro, the port authority continues to work toward increasing the use of shore power by cruise ships calling Vancouver.

Shore power reduces marine diesel air emissions by allowing ships to shut down its engines and connect to BC Hydro’s electrical grid while at dock. Since inception in 2009, the shore power installations at Canada Place have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 14,000,000 tonnes.

The Vancouver cruise industry stimulates more than $2-million in economic activity for each ship that calls at Canada Place.

Website travel planning and booking site TripAdvisor has produced a Best Time to Book report based on its hotel booking data research.

According to TripAdvisor’s Best Time to Book report, summer hotel rates change gradually over time, without dramatic increases or decreases in price for most destinations.

For example, the least expensive time to book U.S. hotels is within two months of a summer trip, with a relatively modest potential savings of seven per cent over the most expensive time period.

By comparison, for European hotels the best time to book for summer is between three to five months out, when travellers can save 22 per cent compared to the most expensive booking period.

TripAdvisor analyzed hotel booking and interest in nine popular regions around the world for the summer months of June, July and August. The best time to book was defined

as periods when hotel prices were less than the average cost for the destination.

Following is the breakdown of potential savings for nine world regions when comparing the least expensive to most expensive times to book hotels for summer travel.

U.S.: Pricing remains fairly steady throughout the year, but those booking within two months of their summer trip can save seven per cent.

Europe: Twenty-three per cent savings if booked three to five months out, versus the peak booking period for the region.

Asia: Booking within three months of a summer trip can save travellers an average of 23 per cent versus peak pricing. Asia prices rise slightly three to five weeks out, before seeing the lowest prices within the final two weeks before the travel date.

Caribbean: Booking within four months is the sweet spot for Caribbean hotels, with seven per cent savings

compared to the peak pricing periods.

Central America: Booking a hotel within three months of a summer trip is the most costeffective approach for Central America, when travellers can save seven per cent compared to peak price weeks.

South America: Twenty per cent savings by booking within four months of the trip. For those willing to wait, an additional two to four per cent saving can be obtained within the final few weeks before the summer travel date.

Middle East: Booking inside four months is the optimal booking period when travellers can save 24 per cent.

African: Twenty-one per cent when booking within five months of the trip.

South Pacific: Nineteen per cent saving per night, or more, by booking within five months of the travel date.

Airline Routes New WestJet VancouverHalifax service

Starting June 29, 2016 until September 3, 2016, WestJet will offer new summer service from Vancouver to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The airline will operate four-weekly flights, using Boeing 737-700 aircraft on the route.

Alaska Airlines to merge with Virgin America Alaska Airlines will acquire Virgin America in a deal worth $4-billion. The merger will provide Alaska Airlines with an expanded West Coast presence, a larger customer base and an enhanced platform for growth.

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines has progressively expanded its network beyond the West Coast, including Hawaii. The airline has a fleet of more than 80 Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft and, together with sister-airline Horizon, offer flights to more than 90 destinations in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

San Francisco-based Virgin America has a fleet of 60 Airbus A320 family aircraft and serves 23 airports in the United States and Mexico.

The transaction brings together two airlines that consistently earn customer admiration and the highest industry accolades—Alaska Airlines has been ranked #1 among the nine largest carriers in the United States

by The Wall Street Journal for overall operational performance for three years in a row, while Virgin America has placed #2 in the same study for the past two years.

The combined organization will be based in Seattle under

the leadership of Alaska Airlines’ president and chief executive officer Brad Tilden and his senior leadership team, who collectively have nearly 15 decades of combined airline industry experience. Until receiving regulatory approval to close, Tilden will colead a transition team with Virgin America CEO David Cush to develop a specific integration plan. Spectacular tall ships, a Canada Day street festival and a new Harvest Festival will be among the year-long celebrations planned by the City of Richmond to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

“Canada’s 150th anniversary is a unique opportunity to celebrate our national pride and build some lasting community legacies, while having plenty of fun all year long,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We’re planning a series of great events our whole community can enjoy and we’re inviting guests from across the region and around the world to join us.”

Based on extensive public consultation and clearly defined set of criteria, events are being planned in all four seasons to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial.

Richmond’s Canada 150 celebrations will build on the City’s existing calendar of major events, while adding some oncein-a-lifetime celebrations and the launch of some new annual events.

Popular annual events such as the Children’s Arts Festival, Ships to Shore Steveston, Richmond Maritime Festival and Richmond World Festival will return and be enhanced and/or expanded for 2017.

In 2017, Ships to Shore will see visits to Steveston by a variety of Canadian and international tall ships along with other unique vessels in both May and July.

A highlight will be a visit in May by Japan’s spectacular Kaiwo Maru, one of

the largest tall ships in the world.

New events for 2017 will include: • Canada Day Street Festival in Steveston Village • Wooden Boat Festival • Pioneer Luncheon, honouring longterm Richmond residents • Music in the Plaza, a series of outdoor concerts on the City Hall and Richmond Cultural Centre plazas • Harvest Festival, celebrating Richmond’s agricultural heritage A number of major civic infrastructure and public art projects are expected to be opened or unveiled in 2017, providing commemorative legacies of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

An additional report will be brought forward to consider a Community Celebration Funding Program, which would provide assistance to community groups in organizing their own Canada 150 events and activities.

Total new funding required for the Canada 150 program is $1.2-million. An additional $1.525-million was previously approved by Council to fund the recurring annual events and programs that will be part of Canada 150.

The Canada 150 plan was approved by Richmond City Council at its March 14, 2016, meeting.

Sudden unintended acceleration is the unintended, unexpected, uncontrolled acceleration of a vehicle, often accompanied by an apparent loss of braking effectiveness.

Such problems may be caused by driver error, mechanical or electrical problems, or some combination of these factors While Toyota has been highlighted for sudden acceleration or sticky accelerator problems on its vehicles, the situation needs to be put into perspective. There have been approximately 2,600 occurrences of sudden acceleration with Toyota vehicles and 43 confirmed deaths—almost 9-million vehicles were sold worldwide in the fiscal year ending March 2015.

The issue, however, is not

unique to Toyota. The NHTSA has fielded 3,526 sudden acceleration complaints from Ford vehicles in the past, as well as Chrysler and Audi vehicles.

Through the years, I have serviced several vehicles that have had sticking accelerator pedals— some due to a sticking throttle cable, others caused simply as a result of the vehicle’s floor mat.

If the problem originates with the throttle cable, this will require a visit to a repair shop.

The floor mat acceleration problem, however, can be prevented by the car’s owner. Ensure that only one mat is positioned on the floor of the driver’s side and that it in no way interferes with the movement of the gas, brake and clutch pedals—if so equipped.

Toyota’s problem is different

from a badly placed floor mat and may well be an electronic issue.

While it is uncommon for a vehicle to suddenly accelerate while being driven, drivers should be prepared and knowledgeable on what to do in the event that this occurs.

Step 1: Press the brake pedal, hard Firstly, press as hard as possible on the brake pedal. Do not pump the pedal, but simply keep steady, hard pressure. Use all the strength your leg can muster. The brakes will require significantly more force than normal because when the engine throttle is wide open, there’s no engine vacuum to power the brake booster. The car won’t slow as quickly as normal, either, but it will reduce speed. In every car, the brakes are

more powerful than the engine, so eventually the brakes will win.

Step 2: Get into neutral The next step is to shift the transmission into neutral. If the throttle is stuck wide open, the engine will rev alarmingly high.

Do not worry about hurting the motor, there’s an electronic rev limiter that will automatically

keep the engine spinning high enough to kill it. With the engine power now disengaged from the drive wheels, the brakes will have a much easier job.

Step 3: Turn off the engine Shut off the engine. Since some modern cars have pushbutton starters, you may have to hold the button for three seconds

to cut the engine. And you should be aware that the brake-pedal pressure may increase when the motor stops running. As safely as possible, pull the car off the road and call a tow truck. There’s no sense driving the car again until the mechanical problem is found and fixed.

Performing well in any panic situation comes down to being prepared. So find an empty parking lot and practice these techniques.

To simulate a stuck throttle, keep it pinned with your right foot and use your left foot to work the brakes.

Be prepared, and think through your actions beforehand so that in the event of a sudden acceleration, you will be ready to stop.

TRAVEL ADVISORY Top 5 facts you should know about Zika virus before you travel Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Cover up and use insect repellent. Use bed nets; use them also to cover playpens, cribs or strollers, and stay in well enclosed air-conditioned rooms.

The mosquitoes that transmit Zika virus are different from those we encounter in Canada. The Zika virus is transmitted by a mosquito that can bite in daylight and evening hours.

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for Zika virus. The best way to protect against Zika is to prevent mosquito bites.

Zika virus can cause fever, rash, joint and muscle pain, lack of energy, weakness, headaches and red eyes.

If you develop symptoms during or after travel, see a health care provider and tell them where you’ve been travelling or living.

Pregnant women and those considering becoming pregnant should discuss their travel plans with their health care provider to assess their risk and consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus is circulating and countries in tropical and subtropical regions where the virus has the potential to circulate.
