On June 1, 2016, Air Canada and YVR celebrated the inaugural flight between Vancouver and Brisbane, Australia. The new service runs three times weekly at launch, increasing to daily service in mid-June. This marks the first nonstop flight from anywhere in Canada to Brisbane. “We’re connecting B.C. proudly to the world, one new destination at a time,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “No airport in Canada has ever had service to Brisbane; but this service has come about because
of our strength as both a destination and a connecting hub and because of our industrybeating airline rates and charges program. “In this process we’ve built strong relationships with Canadian and Australian tourism partners and with Brisbane Airport, who we’ll continue to work with to make this new route successful,” said Craig Richmond. The new service will add 264 jobs to the B.C. economy, $10.4-million in wages and $18-million in Gross Domestic Product for the province. In addition, the service opens up new partnerships
between businesses, universities, export customers, suppliers and investors. Brisbane is home

Air Canada Rouge has launched service between YVR and San Diego International Airport (SAN). The nonstop flights will depart YVR daily for the busy summer months and is currently the only service to this market. “Air Canada Rouge’s new route provides travellers with the much-needed connection between the two vibrant cities,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This new route demonstrates Air Canada’s continued commitment to growing its western
hub at YVR.” Air Canada Rouge will operate the service using an Airbus A319 with seat capacity for 136 passengers. This seasonal service will benefit the local economy by creating 49 new jobs in the transportation and tourism sectors, $2.1-million in wages and approximately $3.8-million in Gross Domestic Product for the province. “Air Canada Rouge is excited to bring our hallmark customer service excellence to daily flights between Vancouver and San Diego,” said Craig Landry, president, Air Canada Leisure Group.
“We offer the largest network of convenient connections in Vancouver to San Diego along with a host of benefits that come with being part of the Air Canada family, including Aeroplan accumulation and redemption, and for eligible customers, priority check-in, Maple Leaf Lounge access, priority boarding and more.” San Diego is the eighth largest city in the U.S. and is known for its beaches, parks and warm climate. The city has a robust tourism industry and enjoys 34.3-million visitors a year. See SAN DIEGO page 3
Eligible WestJet passengers departing from U.S. airports are now able to receive the TSA PreCheck designation using web, mobile and kiosk check-in. Until now, only eligible passengers who received their boarding passes at WestJet counters could take advantage of the program, which offers a less intrusive search when departing from U.S. airports. Travellers eligible for TSA PreCheck include: • Canadian citizens who are members of NEXUS • U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who are members of NEXUS, SENTRI, Global Entry, or TSA PreCheck “This next step is very important for our guests, particularly those who make use of one of our many self-serve options,” said Ed Baklor, WestJet senior vice-president, guest experience. “The ability to check in, add your known traveller number and have your TSA PreCheck designation embedded in the barcode of your electronic boarding pass will make the security experience much more efficient, especially for business travellers and other frequent flyers.”
To be eligible, guests must be registered with TSA PreCheck (tsa.gov), one of four U.S. Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveller programs. When using one of the program’s dedicated security lanes, TSA PreCheck members can leave their shoes, belt, or light jacket on while passing through the scanner. Laptops and liquids can remain in carry-on baggage. For eligible passengers departing from Canada, WestJet is now also able to issue electronic boarding passes from any Canadian airport, with the exception of Calgary, to any U.S. or international destination served by WestJet. WestJet passengers flying from Calgary to U.S. or international destinations will receive electronic boarding passes when the airport’s new international terminal opens October 31, 2016. Passengers flying from any U.S. destination served by WestJet, as well as select international destinations served by the airline, are now also able to receive electronic boarding passes.
