Last month, Air Transat and YVR celebrated the start of new seasonal service between Vancouver and Rome’s Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino) International Airport (FCO). The service, which began on June 17, will depart YVR weekly until October 7, 2016, and is the first non-stop flight from Vancouver to Italy. “Thanks to Air Transat, YVR has a direct link to one of the world’s most renowned and ancient connecting hubs— Rome,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “This service opens up exciting new opportunities to explore an amazing country, known for its rich culture and stunning attractions.”

Air Transat will use an Airbus A330-200 with a capacity of 345 seats, including 12 in Club Class (Business Class). This service will contribute almost $1-million to B.C.’s Gross Domestic Product and will add 60 jobs to the local economy. “The addition of this

direct flight between Vancouver and Rome, a very popular destination with vacationers, is an important step in enhancing our transatlantic flight program for travellers from Western Canada,” said Annick Guérard, president and general manager of Transat Tours Canada.

“By offering 12 European destinations from Vancouver this summer—six of which are available via direct flight— Transat strengthens its position as a holiday travel specialist and meets, more than ever, the needs of travellers in search of new discoveries,” said Guérard. Montreal-based Air Transat

is a key contributor to YVR’s growth, ranking tenth for the number of passengers it brought through YVR in 2015. A leading holiday carrier, Air Transat Transat was named Best North American Leisure Airline in 2015 at the prestigious Skytrax World Airline Awards.

Together these

airlines offer service to eight destinations, on nearly 70 weekly flights, and more than 564,000 annual seats. “Once the cumbersome regulations are lifted, we anticipate visitor numbers from Mexico will increase,” said Richmond. “Whenever we ease entry requirements, add new flights or welcome larger aircraft, the entire province and, ultimately, the country benefits from higher tourism

Frank Ingenito, in-house barber and beloved airport personality retires after a 46-year career at YVR.

The oldest parts of YVR’s Domestic Terminal date back to 1968. Since its opening, the terminal has been graced by domestic and foreign dignitaries, worldfamous celebrities, travellers and YVR staff who have walked and worked in the ever-expanding building. While walls cannot talk, there is one person who has been at YVR long enough to tell many of the airport’s stories—in-house barber Franco Ingenito. An Italian immigrant, Ingenito first sharpened his razor in 1969 and has been cutting hair at the airport for 46 years. During that time, he has seen and styled countless hair fashions, ranging from crewcuts, fauxhawks and man buns to buzz cuts, bob cuts

and balayage. Customers have included hockey great Jean Beliveau; former Minister of Foreign Affairs David Emerson and, of course, countless airport employees and travellers. Regular customer Richard Bannister, a regional manager with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), has been a customer since 1999, appreciating Ingenito’s longstanding practices, stability and continuity, which “represents the right way of doing things.” There was a steady stream of people through the salon on Ingenito’s last day of service. While he usually saw up to 25 customers each day, on his last day the hearty handshakes and

best wishes were an added tribute to his years of service at YVR. “He’s a very nice person and a very strong worker,” said Ingenito’s colleague, Belam. “People admire him. He’s more than a barber—there’s a relationship there. I’ll miss his company and his energy.” Over the course of his career at YVR, Ingenito saw millions of passengers go through the terminals, worked on a variety of hair styles and served as a great ambassador for YVR, for Vancouver and for Canada. If the walls could talk, they would join Ingenito’s many customers, YVR employees and travellers in saying “Thank you, Franco!”

Summer Take-Off Fridays return to YVR Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is bringing back its popular YVR Take-Off Fridays event series for a seventh year. The eight-week summer program will see the Domestic and International terminals, Departures Level 3, come alive with music, entertainment and family-friendly activities. The program will run each Friday from July 8 to August 26, 2016, from 9am to 3pm. Each week, YVR Take–Off Fridays will feature local DJs, live musicians, balloon artists, mascots, face painting, caricatures, food carts, airport tours, and more. Attendees can try delicious

food samples and take advantage of great deals from airport shops and restaurants. New this year, the Vancouver Airport Dental Centre will also offer free dental check-ups and cleanings to children. Select Fridays will have activities from The Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, The Vancouver Canadians, The

Canucks Autism Network and the Coca Cola Hug Me Machine. Take-Off Fridays events are free and a reduced parking rate of $5 is available for up to five hours. Parking vouchers are available at the Customer Information Counter, International Terminal, Level 3. To view the full weekly schedule, visit yvr.ca.

Visa changes continued from page 1 spending, increased tax revenue and the creation of new jobs.” YVR’s newest Mexican service was launched in May 2015, when Aeromexico began daily, non-stop flights to and from the nation’s capital—complementing Air Canada’s existing service on this route. Vancouver Airport Authority estimated the new Aeromexico service would add 160 jobs to the B.C. economy and nearly $10-million in Gross Domestic Product. In addition to welcoming more passengers to Vancouver, YVR also stands to increase its share of travellers connecting through the airport between Latin America and Asia.

The shortest routes between Mexico and Asia pass over the Canadian and U.S. Pacific coastline and YVR competes with other west coast airports and North American hubs to lure airlines and travellers connecting between Mexico and Asia. Since Mexican nationals will now be able to transit through YVR without a visa, this makes YVR one of the most convenient airports in North America for passengers travelling from Mexico to megacities such as Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing. Prospective visitors to Canada are encouraged to consult their embassy or high commission to gain the latest information on entry requirements.

Qantas passengers encouraged to cheer on Aussie Olympians in their sleep Australia’s national carrier and longstanding official airline of the Australian Olympic Team is getting behind Aussie athletes with a limited edition Australian Olympic-themed version of its iconic Business Class pyjamas. In the lead up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which will be held from August 5-21, Qantas will switch out the grey cotton long sleeve pyjamas for a patriotic green and gold set featuring a gold kangaroo on the shirt front and hashtag #RoadToRio on the back. From July 22 until September 18, 2016, all passengers travelling in Business Class across key international routes including Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Dallas, Tokyo, Dubai, Johannesburg and Santiago, will be offered the opportunity to be part of the unofficial PJ Cheer squad for the Australian Olympians and Paralympians. Qantas Group head of brand, marketing and corporate affairs, Olivia Wirth, said the Olympic PJ range is a special way for the airline and its passengers to support Australia’s athletes as their years of hard work come to fruition on the world stage. “Our light grey Qantas PJs are almost as iconic as the flying kangaroo on the front of them, so we thought it would

Summer has landed at YVR and along with it myriad new services, destinations and aircraft that can better connect B.C. to the world. New routes recently launched by WestJet, one of YVR’s airline partners, makes it easier for travellers from B.C. to visit a few more cities in Eastern Canada. If you’re looking to visit friends and family or experience a little bit more of this incredible country, fly out of YVR to one of these three new cool Canadian cities this summer. Halifax, Nova Scotia WestJet recently began new, seasonal non-stop service between YVR and Halifax Stanfield International Airport. This is the only non-stop service between Halifax and Vancouver and also becomes the longest domestic route available from YVR—approximately 4,500 kilometres. WestJet already offers 65 daily flights on 29 routes flying out of YVR, but this new flight to Halifax offers passengers the only direct connection to the Maritimes, a wonderful summer destination for families and adventurers alike. Haligonians can also now travel direct to Vancouver and experience everything this won-

derful city has to offer. Flights will operate on WestJet’s Boeing 737 aircraft featuring the recently enhanced Plus product and WestJet Connect. Flights between Vancouver and Halifax began June 29 and will operate until September 3, 2016, and have been timed conveniently with WestJet’s extensive domestic network. The four times weekly flights depart YVR at 9pm, arriving in Halifax at 6:34am, the following day. Flights depart from Halifax at 7:25am, arriving in Vancouver at 9:46 a.m. London, Ontario WestJet now offers service from YVR to London, England and London, Ontario. The summer seasonal Vancouver to London, Ontario service began on June 29, 2016 and will run until September 5, 2016. Boeing 737-700 aircraft, with a capacity of 137 seats, are being used on the fivehour route, which operates on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. The four times weekly flights depart YVR at 10:15am and arrive at London International Airport (YXU) at 4:27pm. Flights depart YXU at

5:30pm and arrive at YVR at 7:18pm. Not familiar with this Ontario city? Here are a few fun facts: • Nicknamed the “The Forest City” • Canada’s 11th largest municipality • More than 150-million people live within a days’ drive of London, Ontario. Hamilton, Ontario WestJet has also added summer seasonal service from YVR to Hamilton, Ontario. The route to Hamilton will be operated trice weekly. Flights leave YVR at 10:15am and arrive at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) at 5:35pm. Flights depart YHM at 6:40pm and arrive at VR at 8:38pm. Known as “Ambitious City,” “The Hammer” and “Steeltown,” Hamilton is home to Canada’s first Tim Hortons, more than 100 waterfalls and Canada’s largest botanical gardens. Hamilton has lots to offer tourists and locals alike and with this new service, travellers can now fly non-stop between the two destinations. YVR welcomed yet another new aircraft to the runways on June 22, 2016, when Korean Air brought its Boeing 747-8i to Vancouver for the very first time. Korean Air became the world’s first carrier to operate the cargo and passenger variant of the 747-8 when it introduced the 747-8i to its fleet in August of 2015 and became only the second

carrier (in addition to Lufthansa) to operate both the A380 (introduced at YVR in May with British Airways) and the 747-8i. The new aircraft boasts an improved fuel economy and will help the carrier add to its already impressive fleet of world-class aircraft. Korean already flies its 7478F to YVR as part of Korean

Air Cargo operations at YVR. The airline alternates between the 747-400F and this 747-800F for its Vancouver cargo runs, which combine to make up one of the top cargo operations at YVR. Stay tuned to YVR’s twitter account @yvrairport for fun contests that will offer giveaways for pictures and postings to social media.

Boeing plans to soar at London’s 2016 Farnborough Airshow In the sky and on the ground, Boeing’s presence at the upcoming Farnborough Airshow near London, England, will be unmatched, according to company officials. Flying displays during the weeklong show, beginning July 11, will include the 737 MAX, making its international airshow debut, and an ANA 787-9, the first Dreamliner in a Japanese airline livery to take part in the air show. A new CargoLogicAir 747-8 Freighter will join those airplanes on static display. The multi-mission P-8A, a military derivative of the NextGeneration 737-800 and an F/A18F Super Hornet fighter will also perform flying displays.

Highlighting the company’s 100-year anniversary, the Boeing Centennial Experience, a pavilion filled with interactive exhibits, will showcase its past, present and future technologies to inspire new generations to explore engineering and aerospace. With tens of thousands of visitors expected, the show is an opportunity for Boeing to highlight its leadership in aerospace innovation aimed at driving customer success, company officials said. Boeing’s packed agenda includes meetings with customers, suppliers, and community and government representatives, as well as media briefings and order announcements.

Canada expands Air Transport Agreement with Mexico

Canada’s aerospace manufacturing industry set for lift-off in 2017 According to The Conference Board of Canada’s latest aerospace Outlook, Canada’s aerospace manufacturing industry’s order book is growing and production is set to increase, starting in 2017. Aging aircraft fleets, rising fuel prices over the coming years, growing concerns about climate change, and increasing air travel are encouraging airlines to replace their less fuel-efficient aircraft. “Despite the current global economic slowdown, new orders of commercial aircraft continue to outpace shipments, resulting in a growing backlog,” said Carlos Murillo, economist, The Conference Board of Canada. “At current delivery rates, the global commercial aircraft backlog would take close to eight years to be cleared. This is good news for Canadian aerospace

The Chapultepec Castle, located in the middle of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City at a height of 2,325 metres above sea level is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico.

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, has announced an expanded Canada-Mexico Air Transport Agreement that provides additional benefits for Canadian travellers and the air industry. The expanded agreement builds on the existing Canada-Mexico Air Transport Agreement, negotiated in 2011. Canada and Mexico already enjoy a liberal air transport relationship, allowing any number of airlines from both countries to offer services between Canadian and Mexican cities. “Mexico is one of our most important bilateral aviation partners with over 3.5-million passengers travelling on direct flights between Canada and Mexico in

2015,” said the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport. “We are pleased to expand this relationship with additional flexibility for airlines to serve this growing market.” The expanded agreement removes administrative requirements that were needed by Canadian and Mexican airlines to introduce new prices. These airlines will also be able to serve third countries when operating between Canada and Mexico. For example, subject to the approval of Canada and Mexico, a Canadian airline would be allowed to fly from Canada to Mexico via the United States and carry passengers from the U.S. to Mexico. “Canada’s commercial

relationship with Mexico is strong and growing,” said the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade. “By making the movement of goods and people faster and easier, this expanded agreement will continue to facilitate trade and investment between our countries and help Canadian companies grow and succeed.” The new agreement was reached under Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which encourages long-term, sustainable competition and the development of international air services. Under this policy, the Government of Canada has concluded new or expanded air transport agreements covering more than 90 countries.

contracting by close to 20 per cent in 2015. However, as firms continue to struggle to attract skilled workers to the industry, the average wage should increase at an annual pace of 2.5 per cent between 2016 and 2020— above the pace of inflation in the Canadian economy. Canada’s aerospace manufacturing industry’s pre-tax profits are expected to drop slightly to $1.5-billion this year. However, industry profits should see strong annual increases of more than 9 per cent from 2017 through 2020, due primarily to rising aircraft deliveries. Provided the industry can contain its material and labour cost pressures that come with increased production, it should experience a period of financial stability over the coming years, with profit margins expected to reach above 7 per cent by 2020.

manufacturing companies, as Canadian firms continue to make inroads in this market segment and a large backlog supports future production.” The Canadian industry’s order book for commercial aircraft was recently buoyed by a string of new orders for Bombardier CSeries from Air Canada, Air Baltic, and Delta Airlines. One factor clouding the outlook for the aerospace industry is the private business jet market, which remains subdued due to weaker global economic prospects. Nevertheless, the longterm forecast points to a projected growth of around 19,000 jets by 2020, compared with about 16,000 in 2015. The aerospace industry’s workforce is also expected to grow by an average of 4 per cent per year through 2020—after

Royal Canadian Mint unveils 2016 Lucky Loonie coin Canada’s latest commemorative circulation coin, the 2016 Lucky Loonie, pays tribute to all Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing in the Rio 2016 Summer Games. In what is now a legendary tale, a Loonie was buried at centre ice prior to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City to bring good luck to Canada’s gold medal-winning men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. The Royal Canadian Mint has since produced a Lucky Loonie circulation coin for each subsequent Games. The reverse side of the circulation coin shows the image of a common loon on the water, poised for take-off with its arched body and outstretched wings. Planned 100th flight to commemorate anniversary of Vimy Ridge battle On April 9, 2017, the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a group of 10 pilots plan to fly a formation of up to 7 replica World War 1 fighter aircraft over France’s Vimy Ridge Memorial in honour of Canadians who fought at this historic battle. This formation flypast at Vimy will be the culmination of years of planning. The Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place from April 9-12, 1917, was the first occasion when all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle together. Their success in capturing the ridge has been a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice. When the Vimy Flight takes place in 2017, for a brief moment in time thousands of international dignitaries and spectators will be transported back 100 years to that momentous day in Canadian history. The Vimy Flight will consist of retired Air Force and Royal Canadian Navy pilots, who are sharing the cost of flying four replica Nieuport 11 single-seater aircraft. Two Sopwith Pup aircraft, constructed by volunteers at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley, B.C., will join the Nieuports in the Vimy Flight.

The Nieuport 11, nicknamed the Bébé, was a French WWI singleseater fighter aircraft. The aircraft saw service with several of France’s allies during the war.

The Sopwith Pup was a British single-seater biplane fighter aircraft. Its primary users were the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Air Force and Royal Naval Air Service.

Construction of the Sopwiths was made possible by a generous grant from Heritage Canada. One of the Sopwiths will be flown by a serving Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) pilot. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has agreed to transport the aircraft to Vimy and back, but funds are still needed to support the group’s costs while in France. After the Vimy Flight in France, and provided there is

sufficient funding, the plan is to fly all seven aircraft across Canada during summer 2017, stopping at as many towns and cities as possible. This will include flying over Parliament Hill in Ottawa on July 1st to mark the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. Vimy Flight wishes to honour Canadian veterans, past and present. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and American Airlines, through a joint initiative, will install new screening technology, including automated security screening lanes and computed tomography (CT) scanners, at select American Airlines hubs nationwide this fall. The automated screening lanes incorporate technology and screening station modifications that enhance security effectiveness while decreasing the time travellers spend in security screening by approximately 30 per cent. TSA and American Airlines anticipate deployment of these lanes to Chicago (O’Hare), Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles and Miami. American Airlines and TSA also plan to deploy CT technology at a Phoenix TSA screening checkpoint — as a pilot program set to begin by the end of 2016. The advanced equipment in the automated lanes offers

a number of unique features designed to improve the screening of travellers by automating many of the functions currently conducted manually. These innovations include: • Automated belts that draw bags into the X-ray machines, returning the bins back to queue after completion of the screening. • Bags with a potential threat can be directed to a separate area to allow bins behind it to continue through the system uninterrupted. • Property bins that are 25 per cent larger than the bins in regular screening lanes. • Unique Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags that are attached to each bin to allow for additional accountability of items as they transit throughout the system. • Cameras that capture photos of the outside of the bag, which is linked to the X-ray image of the bag’s contents.

CT technology, currently only used at U.S. airports to screen checked bags, is expected to significantly improve the throughput when added to the screening process in Phoenix. 3D CT technology could make it possible to allow passengers to leave liquids, gels and aerosols, as well as laptops, in their carry-

Privacy concerns force cancellation of ‘Border Security’ reality show

A ruling by the federal privacy commissioner has resulted in the cancellation of the reality TV series Border Security: Canada’s Front Line. Privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien informed the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, which spearheaded a complaint on behalf of a migrant worker, that the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) breached the Privacy Act by allowing the production company to film the agency’s examination of the worker before he was advised of the purpose of the filming. As a result of the complaint and his findings, Therrien’s office recommended that CBSA end its participation in the television program, which the agency has agreed to do. Border Security began airing on the National Geographic Channel in 2012, chronicling encounters between border services officers and the public. The unscripted reality-type series was seen by millions of Canadians and has aired in dozens of other countries.

Universal’s Volcano Bay is a radically innovative water theme park opening in 2017 at Universal Orlando Resort. (PRNewsFoto/Universal Orlando Resort)

For more than 25 years, Universal Orlando Resort has been creating epic vacations for the entire family—incredible experiences that place guests in the heart of powerful stories and adventures. Universal plans to continue its tradition of innovative vacation sites with its new Volcano Bay water-theme park set to open next year at Universal Orlando Resort. Universal Orlando’s third theme park is designed to provide an entirely new kind of water theme-park experience, including redefining the queue experience so guests can focus entirely on having fun and spending time together. Eighteen unique attractions ranging from daring to serene will be offered. These attractions will be divided across four primary park areas and will include a multi-directional wave pool with sandy beaches, a peaceful winding river, twisting multirider raft rides, speeding body slides that drop from the top of the volcano into the waters below and a state-of-the-art marquee attraction that will be revealed at a later date. The same team behind

ground-breaking theme park experiences like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, The Amazing Adventures of SpiderMan and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem have brought Volcano Bay to life. The team researched water parks and tropical resorts around the world to help redefine the water park experience and shape their vision for Volcano Bay. Each area of the park will offer its own easy-to-access, resort-like amenities, such as concierge locations and lockers. There will also be themed restaurants and bars located throughout the park, offering signature food and beverage options and impressive volcano views. Volcano Bay will be located within Universal Orlando, adjacent to Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort. The water theme park is just a short walk or ride away from Universal Orlando’s two additional theme parks— Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure, on-site hotels and Universal CityWalk. Universal Orlando will soon introduce a brand-new, 3-Park Explorer ticket for guests where they can plan to experience the

highly anticipated Volcano Bay for travel dates beginning June 1, 2017. Tickets will soon be available through international web sites and travel professionals, and additional ticket options will be announced later. Robotic glove technology developed out of a partnership between General Motors and NASA for use on the International Space Station is finding new life on Earth in health care, manufacturing and other industrial applications though a licensing agreement between GM and Bioservo Technologies AB, a Swedish medical technology company. Working with GM, Bioservo will combine technology from its SEM Glove (Soft Extra Muscle) technology with the RoboGlove, a force-multiplying battery-powered wearable developed by GM and NASA during a nine-year collaboration that included the launch of the humanoid robot called Robonaut 2 (R2) into space in 2011. The RoboGlove uses leadingedge sensors, actuators and tendons that are comparable to the nerves, muscles and tendons in a human hand. One design requirement for R2 was to operate tools designed for humans, and developers achieved unprecedented

hand d e x t e r i t y. That technology was applied to the RoboGlove. Bioservo will initially develop a new grasp assist device for industrial use that could increase human operator efficiency while reducing fatigue in hand muscles. Research shows fatigue can occur within a few minutes of continuously gripping a tool. “Combining the best of three worlds—space technology from NASA, engineering from GM and medtech from Bioservo—in a new industrial glove could lead to industrial scale use of the technology,” said Tomas Ward, CEO of Bioservo Technologies. Ward described the technology combination as a major step toward introducing soft exoskeleton technology globally. GM intends to be the first U.S. manufacturing customer for the refined robotic glove and will test it in some of its plants. Bioservo will make and sell the new glove for a variety of

uses including medical rehabilitation and any place additional gripping strength is needed. “The successor to RoboGlove can reduce the amount of force that a worker needs to exert when operating a tool for an extended time or with repetitive motions,” said Kurt Wiese, vice president of GM Global Manufacturing Engineering. GM briefly tested RoboGlove in a preproduction plant before looking for a partner to help refine it to fit different size hands and address other issues. Solution for July 2016 Crossword.
