The inaugural flight of Xiamen Airlines to North America was celebrated on July 25, 2016, when the airline touched down at YVR. Xiamen Airlines new year-round, nonstop, Boeing 787 service will operate three times weekly between YVR and Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN). “We’re delighted to welcome Xiamen Airlines as our fifth airline from Mainland China,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “It’s no surprise that this very successful airline chose YVR as its first North American destination—our city has close ties with Fujian prov-

ince, while our northwest location and world-class facility makes YVR the best gateway to North America for any Asian airline.” The new Chinese service originates from Xiamen Airlines’ namesake city, which
has a population of more than 3.8-million people. Located in southeastern China, the city of Xiamen boasts a warm climate, tropical scenery and tree-lined beaches. It has long been a popular stop for Chinese tourists, but the
city is now welcoming more and more foreign travellers. Xiamen is a sophisticated destination, with hip boutiques and cafés set alongside traditional temples and attractions. In April 2008, the City of Richmond signed a Friendly
Cooperation Agreement with Xiamen, and in 2012, Xiamen became its official sister city. The Sister City Program fosters mutual understanding and meaningful connections with other cities and cultures. See XIAMEN AIRLINES page 3

This includes: Latin America: 20 per cent growth YVR continued to deliver on its vision of connecting Asia to the Americas, with the strongest year-over-year
growth (20 per cent) in Latin America. In addition to Air Canada’s service to Mexico City, Aeromexico’s new nonstop service to Mexico City, which started in December 2015, has been a key component of this growth. Asia Pacific: 12.9 per cent growth New services that contributed to this sector’s strong growth include Air Canada rouge non-stop to Osaka, and China Eastern direct to Kunming. Top 20 Under 40 recognizes a new generation of aviation personnel
Each year, Wings magazine celebrates 20 aviation professionals under 40 (years) for their leadership skills, commitment and resourcefulness. This year, Candace McKibbon, terminal duty officer for Vancouver Airport Authority, BC Aviation Council (BCAC) executive director, and a graduate of the BCIT Airport Operations program, was named one of the Top 20 Under 40. Prior to joining the BCAC, McKibbon recognized a need for
youth entering the aviation industry to feel a greater connection with the more seasoned members of the aviation community. Once she joined the BCAC, she became involved with its Youth Engagement Committee. Her commitment to inspiring a love of aviation in others was demonstrated most recently through a new blog called Blue Skies Ahead, which is posted on the BCAC’s website. Blue Skies Ahead is aimed at stimulating an interest in the
career opportunities available in the aviation industry through real-life examples. The first two articles in the blog feature recent Airport Operations graduates Kal Manna and Nicole Gaudet. In another example of leadership and commitment, McKibbon volunteers with the Aviation Leadership Foundation, the overall purpose of which is to connect leaders, build community and inspire possibility. As a member of the organization’s Mentorship program, McKibbon
assists mentorship triads to support each other and foster personal and career growth. As a student, McKibbon always did that little bit extra— whether it was taking on leadership roles as class representative or becoming president of Maximum Altitude (a student organization dedicated to sharing a passion for aviation)—while maintaining excellent grades. As a result, she earned several scholarships and awards recognizing her achievements.
All of these qualities and accomplishments demonstrate McKibbon’s positive impact on the aviation industry and the 2016 Wings magazine recognition of being named a Top 20 Under 40. One colleague said, “Candace brings her whole heart to every role she takes on. She takes advantage of every opportunity and is involved in a wide range of volunteer activities, while still maintaining focus on the basics. She’s also a great time-manager!”
YVR terminal duty officer, Candace McKibbon, named a Top 20 Under 40 in annual “Wings” magazine celebration of aviation professionals.

Xiamen Airlines will offer three-times weekly, non-stop flights between Xiamen and Vancouver.
In addition to offering airline service to Canadians and Americans whose destination is Xiamen, the new Xiamen -Vancouver route will be bolstered by a 72-hour visa-free stopover program. Xiamen Airlines has been in operation for 32 years and has been named the Best Airline in Mainland China for the past three years. The airline recently received the highest honour for service, winning the 2016 China Quality Award. According to Xiamen Airlines’ chairman and CEO Che Shanglun, the VancouverXiamen route is the first one that enabled the airline to extend its network towards North America.
The airline operates an allBoeing fleet of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. The new YVR route, added as part of a rapid intercontinental expansion, is operated using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 4 First class, 18 Business class and 215 Economy class seats. Flight MF806 will depart Vancouver at 1:40am and arrive in Xiamen at 5:30am local time, the following day. The westbound flight, MF805, departs Xiamen at 9:30pm before crossing the International Date Line to arrive in Vancouver at 6:40pm. The new service will add 158 jobs to the B.C. economy and $9-million in Gross Domestic
Product for the province. In addition to strengthening business and trade ties, Canada stands to see more Chinese tourists taking advantage of the new, non-stop service. Vancouver Airport Authority secured the new route under its new five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR, which began on January 1, 2016. This program offers airlines the lowest landing and terminal fees of any competing airport in Canada and the U.S., while incenting and rewarding airline growth. Xiamen Airlines is the first new airline attracted to YVR under the ConnectYVR program.

YVR has partnered with YYoga to test a designated free-of-charge yoga space for travellers.
A pilot program to test a yoga space for travellers has been launched at YVR. The program, YYoga@YVR, offers departing passengers a designated space free of charge to engage in a self-guided yoga practice prior to boarding. YYoga@YVR is offered as part of YVR Take-Off Fridays, YVR’s popular summer event series that offers music, entertainment and family-friendly activities in the terminal. The yoga program will be offered each Friday from 10am to 2pm until August 26 and will be open to any passenger departing to a Canadian destination. It is located after security in Domestic Terminal C-Pier, across from Gate 46. “We know that passengers
are looking for a variety of wellness options when they travel,” said Kim Halowski, manager, sales & services, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Adding a tranquil yoga space to this year’s YVR Take-Off Fridays programming allows us to offer experiences that appeal to different travellers and continue to enhance the passenger experience at YVR.” The yoga pilot program is offered through a partnership between YVR and YYoga, Canada’s leading yoga and wellness company. Passengers can use the space to practice their own yoga flow, meditation or simple stretching. A YYoga instructor will be on hand to welcome passengers, answer questions and suggest
poses and stretches that are particularly beneficial during travel. Pre-registration is not required and mats are provided by YYoga. “Yoga can offer tremendous benefits to travellers,” said Berk Kansu, marketing manager for YYoga. “It can help passengers feel relaxed and centered and help them move to their next destination in a refreshed, calm way. We’re excited to be able to partner with YVR to make this space available for passengers this summer.” The YVR Take-Off Fridays event series is back for a seventh year. This year’s program, which began on July 8, will run until August 26 between 9am and 3pm. To see the full weekly schedule, visit yvr.ca.
Traffic Volume continued from page 1
Capacity increases on existing services also boosted passenger growth; this includes Eva Air’s increased frequency on its service to Taipei, from four to five times weekly, and Korean Air’s increase to daily service on its Seoul route. YVR anticipates that Air Canada’s new non-stop daily service to Brisbane, which launched on June 1, 2016, will greatly contribute to growth in this region. In addition, YVR forecasts further growth as a result of Air Canada’s new non-stop service to Delhi, which starts on October 20, 2016. Europe: 12.9 per cent growth New services that contributed to this growth include WestJet’s first wide-body international service to Gatwick, Air Transat’s seasonal service to Rome (a first for YVR), Air Canada rouge’s service to Dublin (another first for YVR), Air Canada’s seasonal Double Daily service to Heathrow, and British Airways’ new Airbus A380 service on its YVR to London route. Transborder Traffic (U.S.): 3.8 per cent growth Air Canada’s new non-stop services to San Jose, San Diego and Chicago helped drive this increase, as did WestJet’s new
seasonal service to Orlando and San Diego. On June 17, 2016, Air Canada launched daily 787-8 Dreamliner service on its Vancouver – Newark route. The route’s increased capacity and the Dreamliner’s exceptional customer experience is expected to impact growth positively in this key market. Domestic Traffic: 7.6 per cent growth The domestic sector’s increased growth over 2015 was driven by the continued support of Air Canada’s network and new services such as WestJet nonstop flights from YVR to Halifax, London and Hamilton, Ontario. “I would like to thank our
airline partners at YVR, who
have contributed to a fantastic period of growth for our air-
port and our region,” said Craig Richmond. “We are set to sur-
pass 21-million passengers this
year and we have an ambitious goal of 25-million passengers by
2020. We will achieve this by working together to support new
and existing services, connecting British Columbia proudly to the
world.” YVR will release its Q3 passenger figures in fall 2016.

Historic round-the-world flight completed without a drop of fuel
Solar Impulse 2—an around-the-world solar flight that covered 43,041 kilometres. It took 70 hours for the aircraft to cross the Atlantic and 118 hours across the Pacific.
Taking turns at the controls of Solar Impulse 2 (Si2)—their zero-emission electric and solar airplane, capable of flying day and night without fuel—Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg succeeded in their dream of achieving the first-ever roundthe-world solar flight. By landing back in Abu Dhabi after a total of 23 days of flight and 43,041 kilometres travelled in a 17-leg journey, Si2 proved that clean technologies can achieve the impossible. Solar Impulse achieved 500 flight hours and glided across four continents, three seas and two oceans. Stops along the way included Egypt, India, Myanmar, China, Japan, the U.S. and southern Europe. Wider than a Boeing 747, the
Solar Impulse 2 has a 72-metre wingspan and carries more than 17,248 solar cells that charge four uber-efficient batteries. During daylight, the solar panels charge the plane’s batteries, which make up a quarter of the craft’s 2,300-kilogram weight. The pilot climbs to 8,839 metres during the day and glides down to 1,524 metres during the night, to conserve power. The plane’s top speed is around 144 kilometres per hour and it travelled at an average of 61 kilometres per hour across the Pacific. Beyond this historic milestone, the two Swiss pioneers will continue to urge the global implementation of energy-efficient solutions through the creation of the International Committee for
Clean Technologies and leverage the expertise and technology gained over the years in Solar Impulse by launching new innovative projects, such as the development of solar-powered drones. “This is not only a first in the history of aviation; it’s before all a first in the history of energy,” said chairman and pilot Bertrand Piccard, addressing the crowd on exiting the cockpit of Si2. “I’m sure that within 10 years we’ll see electric airplanes transporting 50 passengers on short to mediumhaul flights. But it’s not enough. The same clean technologies used on Solar Impulse could be implemented on the ground in our daily life to divide by two the CO2 emissions in a profitable way. Solar Impulse is only the beginning, now take it further!”

Website allows passengers to make A380 booking choice
British Airways A380—YVR has been A380-ready since 2006, when the aircraft touched down in Vancouver as part of a global test-flight schedule.
Airbus has launched a website for travellers who want to experience flight on its A380 double-deck aircraft. The iflyA380.com website is the only place where all 13 A380 operators present the on-board services they offer and the destinations they serve. Inspirational information about each city also helps travellers choose their next vacation. Once at the website, users select departure date, destination airports/cities, class of travel, date and the number of travellers and
hit ‘search’. They can then click on the desired flight and be taken seamlessly to the website of the selected airline, allowing users to book securely at no extra cost. “As a global leading aviation company, we are exploring new digital avenues and IflyA380. com illustrates this transformation journey,” said Marc Fontaine, Airbus digital transformation officer. “Booking systems today do not allow the passengers to easily choose their preferred aircraft and we decided to fill that gap by easing the access to the iconic A380 aircraft, for everybody. For the first time, a booking service puts the aircraft type as the criteria for flight selection. This seamless experience is a win for Airbus A380, it’s a win for the airlines’ operators and it’s a win for the passengers.” On May 1, 2016, YVR welcomed its first A380 service with British Airways’ inaugural A380 flight from London Heathrow.
British Airways chose Vancouver as its first Canadian destination to be served by the A380, flying daily summer service between YVR and London Heathrow airport. The A380 is the world’s largest, most spacious airliner. Seating 544 passengers in standard layout, the aircraft has two full decks, allowing it to offer wider seats, broader aisles, and more floor space. More than 130-million passengers have already enjoyed the experience of flying on board an A380. At present, 230 airports can accommodate the A380 around the world and every three minutes an A380 either takes off or lands. For more information on all airlines that fly the A380, visit IflyA380. For information on British Airways A380 flights from Vancouver, visit britishairways. com.

Each year, the Boundary Bay Airshow draws thousands of aviation enthusiasts who are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs to this free family event.
The Boundary Bay Airshow continues to be one of the few remaining airshows that offer free admission for spectators and is one that is designed to appeal to all ages. Hosted by the Corporation of Delta and Alpha Aviation, this family-friendly event includes children’s activities, live entertainment, a large selection of food options and, of course, the non-stop excitement of a variety of aircraft taking to the skies. Returning once again to Boundary Bay Airport last month, the annual event paid tribute to the East Ladner airport, which opened in 1941 as a Second World War training base for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Featured aircraft included a 1944 Lockheed P-38L Lightning, a Harvard Mk4 and Mk IIb and a Nakajima Ki-43 Oscar Hayabusa Japanese WWII bomber—only 5,919 of the latter were manufactured and few still exist.
Lockheed P-38 Lighting twin engine, twin boom aircraft flies with a Japanese Nakajima Ki-43 (Oscar). The big four engine Boeing 17G Flying Fortress bomber drew a crowd of spectators.

There were also many famous aviators at the show including Bud Granley, Ross Granley, Jon Melby and David and Drew Watson. Flying the Harvard Mark IV was veteran airshow pilot and performer John Mrazek who
performed an aerial ballet that includes noise, smoke and a large degree of aerial skill. Mrazek was joined by his son, Richard, who flew an Aero L29 Delfin military jet trainer and a Yak 18T aerobic utility aircraft at the show.

Alaska Airlines to retrofit existing 737 fleet with Boeing Space Bins
The Space Bins can store up to six bags each—two more than the current overhead storage option for 737s. Photo: Future Travel Experience.
Airline to modify 34 inservice airplanes to significantly increase overhead storage Seattle-based Alaska Airlines airline will begin modification of its in-service Boeing Sky Interior 737 airplanes with more spacious Space Bins. In total, the airline plans to modify 34 airplanes—primarily 737-900ERs (Extended Range)— with the new overhead bins. Boeing’s Space Bins are available for retrofit on in-service NextGeneration 737s and as an optional feature on in-production NextGeneration 737s and 737 MAXs.

Alaska Airlines was the launch customer for Boeing’s retrofit Space Bin program, which increases the room for carry-on baggage by up to 50 per cent, depending on the airline’s configuration. Space Bins stow six bags, two more than the current pivot bins installed on NextGeneration 737s with the Boeing Sky Interior. This is based on a standard size carry-on bag measuring 23 x 36 x 56 centimetres. When opened, the bottom edge of a Space Bin hangs about
five centimetres lower, which allows travellers to lift their carry-on bags more easily. In addition to providing more storage room, the Space Bin also allows greater visibility into its back area. Alaska Airlines celebrated its first 737 featuring Space Bins in October 2015 and will have nearly 30 Space Bin-outfitted airplanes in service by the end of 2016. The “Spirit of Innovation” Goodyear Blimp possesses two Pusher engines, each of which delivers 210 horsepower that allow a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour.
As part of a North American summer tour, the Goodyear Blimp returned to Canadian airspace last month, successfully touching down at the Abbotsford Airport after a few weather delays. The visit to B.C.’s Lower Mainland by the Spirit of

time experience of flying aboard the world famous airship. “Goodyear is proud of our history and heritage in Canada and we [were] excited to bring
the Goodyear Blimp back to Vancouver to visit with existing fans and to make some new ones,” said Caroline Pajot, Goodyear Canada president. “Seeing our iconic airship on TV is one thing, but being able to connect with it in person is a whole other experience, one that people will remember fondly for years.” The first Goodyear Blimp was launched in 1925 and since then Goodyear has generally owned and operated dozens of non-rigid airships (blimps) of various types in its global public relations fleet. In 2011, Goodyear announced that it would replace its fleet of blimps with semi-rigid Zeppelin NT airships. Introduced in 2014, the Zeppelin is larger, faster and more maneuverable than the venerable GZ-20A blimp it will replace. Once the Spirit of Innovation blimp retires in 2017, Goodyear’s new semi-rigid airships will, technically, not be blimps at all.

Four Qantas passengers have had their own personal holiday snaps turned into luxury limited edition silk scarves as part of a collaboration between Qantas and Australian designers Bird & Knoll, whose scarves are favoured by a host of celebrities. It’s the second year in a row that Qantas and Bird & Knoll have worked together to combine fashion and travel. The 2016 “Destinations” scarf series captures the essence of four Qantas destinations photographed by travellers who submitted an image they had taken of their favourite destination as part of a Qantas Instagram competition. A panel of judges
selected the winning entries. The images depicted four very different destination scenes including Tamworth (NSW), Venice Beach (Los Angeles), a wild giraffe in the mist (South Africa) and Bondi’s iconic Iceberg ocean baths (Sydney). The images have been translated on to the 90cm x 90cm silk designer scarves. Brazil claims countryman Santos-Dumont to be the ‘father of aviation’
A replica of “14-bis”, Alberto Santos-Dumont’s biplane was built in 2006 to celebrate the centennial of his flight. Photo: Fabio Pozzebon.
Orville and Wilbur Wright are generally credited with inventing, building and flying the world’s first successful airplane. However, Brazil has claimed its countryman Alberto SantosDumont, not the Wright brothers, innovated flight. So, just whom is Alberto Santos-Dumont? He was born in 1873 in Palmira, Minas Gerais in the southeast of Brazil, the heir of a wealthy family of coffee producers. Santos-Dumont was fascinated by machinery, and while still a young child he learned to drive the steam tractors and locomotive used on his family’s plantation. He was also a fan of Jules Verne and had read many of his books before his 10th birthday. He wrote in his autobiography that the dream of flying came to him while contemplating the magnificent skies of Brazil in the long, sunny afternoons at the plantation. After a fall from a horse gave his father partial paralysis, the family moved to Paris. There, Santos-Dumont became interested in flying, specifically balloons and dirigibles. He made his first flight in a balloon shortly after arriving in Paris and soon wanted to create his own. He reached the peak of his balloon career when he flew from Parc Saint Cloud to the Eiffel tower in Paris, which earned him the Deutsch de la Meurthe aviation prize. Following his pioneering work in airships, he constructed a heavier-than-air aircraft, the 14-bis. On October 23, 1906, Santos-Dumont flew five metres off the ground for a distance of 60 metres in Paris. He later set the first record by The World Air Sports Federation on November 12, 1906, with a flight distance of 220 metres for 22.5 seconds. Santos-Dumont went on to design monoplanes for personal transport. His Demoiselles aircraft was mass-produced—50 were built—and could travel at 120 kilometres per hour. He retired from flying in March 1910 and made his last flight on December 4 of that year. The flight ended in an accident, but Santos-Dumont managed to escape without serious injury. He moved back to his native Brazil
in 1914 after the outbreak of World War I. Santos-Dumont died on July 23, 1932, in Guarujá, São Paulo. Today, he is regarded as the “father of aviation” in Brazil and the domestic airport in Rio de Janeiro, Santos Dumont Airport, is named in his honour. His hometown, Palmira, was later renamed as Santos Dumont in his honour as well. The official Brazilian Presidential Aircraft is also named after him.

KLM plans World Business Class cabin update on A330 fleet
KLM’s A330 fleet will be retrofitted with the lie-flat World Business Class product by early 2018. Photo: Future Travel Experience. Built in 1738, Longshan Temple is one of the oldest temples in Taipei. Photo: Bernard Gagnon.
China Airlines has increased its free baggage allowances by 10 kilograms for all flights flown by its aircraft on Asian, Australia/New Zealand and European routes. The move makes China Airlines the first Taiwan carrier to offer this privilege. The new baggage allowance is now 30 kilograms per person in Economy Class, 35 kilograms per person in Premium Economy Class, and 40 kilograms per person in Business Class.
For travellers whose check-in process involves other airlines stations, or those holding tickets from other airlines, the terms of their original ticket applies. The extra baggage allowances enjoyed by members of China Airlines’ Dynasty flyer program remain unchanged. China Airlines offers service from YVR to Taipei, Taiwan. For details on flights, visit chinaairlines.com.
KLM plans to modernize the World Business Class cabin interiors on all of its Airbus A330s. Passengers will be able to experience the new-look cabin on A330-operated services from early 2018. The World Business Class cabin can already be found on KLM’s Boeing 787s, as well as retrofitted Boeing 777-200 and 747-400 aircraft. All of the carrier’s Boeing 777-300s will also have the new premium cabin by June 2017. Among the highlights are
fully flat seats, 16-inch in-flight entertainment (IFE) monitors with content in 12 languages and ample storage space for personal items. The addition of the new World Business Class cabin to the A330 fleet is part of KLM’s ongoing investment in enhancing passenger comfort, which has also seen the introduction of a new economy class product, investment in in-flight connectivity and upgrades to the airline’s IFE system.

A wide variety of Airbus innovation, including the new “Airspace by Airbus” cabin brand, were spotlighted by Airbus at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow
The Farnborough Airshow is an important event in the international aerospace and defence industry calendar, allowing potential customers and investors an opportunity to view and place orders for a variety of civilian and military aircraft. The show is a week-long event that is held in mid-July in evennumbered years at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, England. The first four days—Monday to Thursday—are dedicated exclusively to trade, with the final three days open to the public. Farnborough has a reputation for attracting the most innovative ideas from the aerospace industry, so it was appropriate that at this year’s show Airbus’ new cabin concept “Airspace by
Airbus” was showcased. A representative Airspace cabin interior section, which according to Airbus is designed to create a unique passenger experience that is more relaxing, inspiring, beautiful and functional, was on display in the Airbus Group pavilion. The Airspace cabin is inspired by the A350 XWB and shaped by the passenger feedback Airbus has already received from people flying on its newgeneration widebody aircraft. Along with the A350 XWB, the A330neo will include this new cabin in Airbus aircraft. Signature design elements recognizable throughout all Airspace cabins include wider seats; larger overhead storage

Other features are a unique and customizable welcome area at the main passenger boarding door, the latest in LED technology for ambient lighting, as well as clean shapes and surfaces throughout the interior. Airspace was launched earlier this year and Airbus’ commercial activity at the Farnborough Airshow showed the concept already is taking off with operators. Airbus announced at the conclusion of the week that its new business at the Farnborough Airshow totalled 279 new and upsized aircraft worth $35-billion.

Star Alliance takes Best Alliance title at Skytrax World Airline Awards The Star Alliance global airline group has claimed the Best Airline Alliance title at the Skytrax World Airline Awards. The airline group also received the Best Airline Alliance Lounge Award for its Los Angeles Lounge for the second year in a row. The Star Alliance group consists of 28 airlines, including seven that offer service from YVR—Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Eva Air, Lufthansa and United Airlines. “I am accepting this award on behalf of more than 430,000 employees who deliver our customer promise to more than 640-million passengers each year,” said Mark Schwab, CEO Star Alliance, on receiving the award. “Regaining this accolade shows that investing into technology, which facilitates the delivery of our Alliance customer benefits, is paying off and that travellers are noticing a difference. Following the recent decision of our Chief Executive Board, we will invest further in modern systems and so continuously improve the Alliance travel experience.” Star Alliance was the first airline alliance to receive the Best Alliance Award from Skytrax when the category was first intro-
duced in 2005 and has since held the award seven times. The World Airline Awards are managed by international air transport rating organization, Skytrax Research of London, UK. The global coverage of the survey distinguishes these awards as the most respected quality recognition for today’s world airline industry. The awards are based on the results of the World Airline Survey, which has operated since 1999. The customer survey ran from August 2015 until May 2016, with a total of 19.2-million eligible customer surveys being completed. People of more than 104 different nationalities participated in the survey, which covered more than 280 airlines—from the largest international airlines to smaller domestic carriers. The surveys measure quality standards across 41 key performance indicators of front-line product and service. Customer satisfaction levels for the passenger experience are rated across airport and onboard environments—check-in to boarding, arrivals and transfer, lounges, seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food and beverages, in-flight entertainment (IFE), staff service and associated air travel features.

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik
Beware of vehicles with DIY auto repair Buying a used car? Beware of a vehicle that has been maintained by a do-it-yourselfer. My auto shop recently diagnosed an interesting AirCare failure on a 1993 BMW 320i on which some of the repairs had been completed by a do-it-yourselfer. This particular vehicle failed AirCare because of its production of very high carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. During diagnosis and road testing, the computer recorded the engine’s coolant temperature at 30 degrees Celsius with the engine hot, when it should have been at least 80 to 100 degrees. Since Coolant Temperature Enrichment is based on the engine’s coolant temperature, this low temperature reading meant the fuel mixture was continually being enriched, which very likely caused the elevated emissions that led the vehicle to fail AirCare. Testing the coolant temperature sensor and wiring was the next step in clarifying the problem. What I found here was amazing: the coolant temperature sensor was not connected. After an exhaustive search for the wiring connector, I finally found it buried under the intake manifold and connected to another coolant temperature sensor, one that was exposed.

$ This book may have been too advanced for the do-it-yourselfer who repaired the coolant temperature sensor on a BMW 320i.
This exposed sensor was actually reading the air temperature in the engine compartment. Once the sensor was correctly reconnected, the vehicle was able to pass AirCare with excellent readings. Why someone would go to such lengths to perform this unorthodox form of maintenance is mind-boggling. Clearly this person had no understanding of what was required to keep a car running properly. The repair not only created excessive pollution, it also wasted gas. This example demonstrates why it is important to always ask
who has maintained any secondhand vehicle that you plan to buy. If the answer is “I did” or “my friend is a mechanic,” beware, or you just might end up with an experience similar to this one. Solution for August 2016 Crossword.

LAST MONTH’S WINNER: Beatrice Gandu Answer: Sopwith Pup
The Sopwith Pup was a British single-seater biplane fighter aircraft built by the Sopwith Aviation Company. It entered service with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service in the autumn of 1916. The “Pup” nickname arose because pilots considered it to be the ‘pup’ of the larger two-seat Sopwith 1½ Strutter.
