Shaping the future of YVR PG
Starting Dec. 30, 2016, Beijing Capital Airlines (BCA) will begin service between Vancouver and Hangzhou, via Qingdao, China. The new, thrice-weekly service marks the first time Beijing Capital Airlines will fly to any destination in North America. “We are thrilled Beijing Capital Airlines has chosen YVR as its first entry point into North America,” said

Government:
Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Beijing Capital Airlines is the sixth airline to serve YVR from mainland China—two more than any other airport in North America or Europe. It is a true testament to YVR’s position as a connecting hub to the AsiaPacific region, and to YVR’s competitiveness in attracting new carriers.” The new route between
YVR and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) via Qingdao Liuting International Airport (TAO) will be flown on an Airbus 330, with seating for 222 passengers, including 36 in business class and 186 in economy. This flight will depart HGH at 2:15pm, followed by a 6:05am departure from TAO, arriving at YVR at 1:15pm each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Cathay adds frequency and new aircraft to YVR-Hong Kong route
Departures from YVR will take place at 4:30pm, arriving at TAO at 7:40pm and then 11:25pm at HGH, both the following day. China and Canada have a long history of cultural and economic links. Hangzhou, located in the central eastern coast of China, is the capital city of Zhejiang province. Hangzhou is a city of more than nine-million people
and is among the seven most ancient cities in China. When the great Italian explorer Marco Polo visited in the 13th century, he declared Hangzhou the “most beautiful and elegant city in the world.” Qingdao, located in northeast China, also has a population of more than nine million people. These added flights will bring Cathay Pacific’s frequency on this route to 17 non-stop flights a week, more than any other airline. “We are absolutely delighted that Cathay Pacific continues to excel in our market,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Cathay Pacific’s increased frequency will add an additional 87,360 seats annually into Vancouver. Each year thousands of volunteers from coast to coast join forces to clean 2,000-plus shorelines across Canada. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is recognized as one of the largest direct action conservation programs, as well as the most significant contributor to the International Coastal Cleanup in Canada. This year’s shoreline cleanup on Sea Island will take place on September 18 and volunteers
are encouraged to join YVR, the Vancouver Aquarium, the Sea Island community and hundreds of volunteers to clean up shoreline waste and debris. Since 2012, more than 2,000 kilograms of waste has been cleared from Sea Island’s Iona Beach as a result of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup program. To take part in this Sea Island conservation effort, email Community_relations@yvr.ca to reserve your spot.
Airport Authority maintains AA credit rating Last month, ratings agency Standard & Poor’s affirmed its AA long-term issuer credit and senior unsecured debt rating for Vancouver Airport Authority. This marked the 11th consecutive year the Airport Authority has maintained its AA rating from Standard & Poor’s—making YVR one of the world’s most creditworthy airports. YVR has enjoyed strong financial performance over the last year, thanks to an innovative management team focussed on providing unique business solutions and competitive fees for business partners. In 2016, YVR launched
ConnectYVR, a fair and equitable program that offers a rate structure for airlines designed to incent growth and efficiency. The new program dropped average rates by 15 per cent, making YVR’s rates some of the lowest in Canada. Programs such as ConnectYVR are possible because of the airport’s focus on developing alternative, nonaeronautical sources of revenue, which accounted for 45 per cent of the Airport Authority’s revenue in 2015. This includes sales of YVR’s award-winning Borderxpress border clearance kiosks, the world’s leading border

In December 2015, the Airport Authority announced the closure of a private placement of $200-million in Series F debentures due November 2045. The Airport Authority took advantage of historically low interest rates of 3.857 per cent, the lowest issued rate by a Canadian airport with a 30-year term. The Airport Authority also saw a 4.3 per cent increase in overall revenue in 2015 and continues to maintain one of the lowest Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) cost in Canada for a major airport.
Beijing Capital Airlines continued from page 1
Qingdao’s economy is centered on heavy industry, software, automotive, electronics and banking. The new BCA service link will bolster tourism and trade between the three cities. Beijing Capital Airlines is YVR’s second new airline and twelfth new route launched in 2016. The new service brings 123 jobs and $6.2-million in GDP to the province of British Columbia. Beijing Capital Airlines, a leisure airline, commenced operations in 2010 and is headquartered in the Chinese capital. It currently operates flights out of Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Xi’an and Hangzhou as its core bases. “BCA obtained the IOSA [IATA Operational Safety Audit] accreditation this May and officially became an IATA member,” said Mr. Xu Jun, CEO of Beijing Capital Airlines. “This proves that our continuous efforts in raising our operation safety standard have been recognized
by international aviation organizations. We are thrilled to extend our network to North America via Vancouver.” BCA is a member of HNA Group, a conglomerate encompassing core divisions of aviation, holding, tourism, capital, logistics and EcoTech. Based in China’s Hainan province, the group reaps revenues of more than US$38billion and has nearly 180,000 employees worldwide. It is one of the top four companies in China’s aviation industry and ranks 99th in China’s Top 500 Enterprises. In July 2015, the group landed on the Global 500 list for the first time. Part of YVR’s rapid growth is accredited to its five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR, which began on January 1, 2016. This program lowered airline landing and terminal fees by 15 per cent, which are the lowest of any competing airport in Canada and the U.S.

Mexico’s flagship carrier Aeroméxico has unveiled the special livery of its first Dreamliner 787-9. The aircraft will be named Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent) after one of the principal deities of pre-Hispanic Mexico. This is the first time in aviation history a design of this type has been painted on an aircraft’s livery, offering a unique fusion of tradition and modernity. Aeroméxico’s Quetzalcoatl plane left the Boeing Aircraft Paint Hangar after a nine-day process—six days longer than expected—as the engineers found that they needed extra time to add all of the original hues and
colours featured in the design. In November 2014, Aeroméxico announced a Design is in the Air contest, inviting participants to submit a creative image to be painted on an aircraft’s fuselage. More than 1,000 participants presented their designs during the fourweek contest period, 400 of which were chosen for meeting the requirements established in the rules. The winning design was created by graphic designer José Manuel Escudero of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Aeroméxico is the second carrier in Latin America to operate the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and plans to continue invest-
ing until its fleet has 10 787-9 aircraft. If an airline places an order for a 787 today, it could take between 10 to 15 years for it to be delivered. As a founding member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, Aeroméxico offers customers more than 1,000 destinations in 179 countries served by the 20 SkyTeam airline partners The airline also offers travel options through its code share partners WestJet, Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, Avianca and Copa Airlines, with extensive connectivity in Canada, United States, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.

The Eagle Knight is the distinctive logo displayed on the tail of Aeroméxico’s aircraft. The Eagle Knights were elite Aztec warriors. For major public events, as well as for ritual sacrifices, the Aztecs organized spectacular ceremonies that included
military parades featuring the dance of the Eagle Knights, who leapt as if they were birds ready to take flight. These young men dressed in coats of feathers carried spears and shields and covered their faces with masks made in the shape of an eagle’s head.

Public encouraged to help shape the future of YVR YVR has launched Phase 2 of YVR 2037, a Master Plan consultation process that offers the community an opportunity to provide input on future land use decision-making and facility development at the airport. The YVR 2037 Master Plan serves as the blueprint to building a world-class sustainable airport that reflects the needs of British Columbians. “Effective long-term planning has continued to be one of YVR’s strengths and is essential to our future and to the development of B.C.’s economy and our surrounding communities,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “During Phase 1 of our community engagement, we had great conversations with British Columbians and our business partners; all of which informed our plans for Phase 2
of consultation. Today, we need your input and thoughts on the exciting future of YVR—your creative ideas could show up in the next few years as part of our upcoming terminal expansion.” As Canada’s second busiest airport, YVR welcomed a record 20.3-million passengers in 2015, employed more than 23,000 people, generated $5.3-billion in total Gross Domestic Product and drove $11.7-billion to the Canadian economy. The community is invited to share input online or in person at YVR’s public meetings. Feedback on all aspects of YVR’s future plans is welcome; specific areas of Phase 2 consultation focus include terminals, airside and airspace, ground access, environment, land use and amenities. YVR partnered with futurist Nikolas Badminton to introduce elements of fantastical reality to YVR 2037, drawing on a shared fascination and excitement for the future. Badminton developed five ‘design fiction’ stories about the possibilities of transportation, air travel and technology at YVR in 2037 based on technological advances being made today. Scenarios include in-airport vertical farms that deliver fresh vegetables daily, holographic customer service representatives, automatic car ports, augmented reality contact lenses that reveal airport maps and on-the-fly instructions, biometrics and even access to space travel.
“From robots to augmented reality, YVR’s future has the potential to be bright and exciting: a multifaceted sensory experience, a business hub, a hive of activity and interaction, and a unique, second-to-none retail experience,” said Badminton. “I want to help British Columbians rethink the future and push the boundaries of what’s possible during the YVR 2037 process.” YVR will host two public workshops (pre-registration required) and one open house (pre-registration required). Registration is available online at YVR2037.ca, by email yvr2037@yvr.ca or by calling 604.637.6459. Boeing continues testing of Blended Wing Body concept
Boeing and NASA researchers are testing a Blended Wing Body (BWB) model at a subsonic wind tunnel at the NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia. Boeing is readying the BWB for the next step in maturing the concept—a manned demonstrator. Photo: David C. Bowman, NASA Langley.
Boeing is back in the wind tunnel testing one of its most innovative and potentially gamechanging advanced concepts: the Blended Wing Body. Testing is underway through the end of September at the NASA Langley Research Center Subsonic Tunnel in Virginia. Time permitting, testing will be conducted to measure the effectiveness of various control surfaces. The BWB concept is unique in that it forgoes the conventional
tube and wing shape of today’s airplanes, in favour of a triangular tailless aircraft that effectively merges the vehicle’s wing and body. It may not be just a concept for too much longer, according to company leaders. Boeing sees potential for a BWB-type aircraft to be developed in the next 10 years as a subsonic transport, possibly beginning with military transport variants for airlift and aerial refuelling.

Vancouver Chinook Classic Catch and Release Derby celebrates fifth outstanding year With sunny skies above and challenging waters below, this year’s Vancouver Chinook Classic saw another successful weekend at Pier 73 Marina & Yacht Club at the Pacific Gateway Hotel. Competition in the event, which was held on August 20-21—its fifth consecutive year—was fierce, with 45 boats carrying a total of 133 registered fishermen. The Vancouver Chinook Classic is a premier two-day catch-and-release salmon fishing event that supports local charities and salmon stewards. The tournament raises awareness and funds for the Pacific Salmon Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wild Pacific salmon and their natural habitats. Over the weekend, fishermen and guides enjoyed moorage at Pier 73 Marina & Yacht Club on the Fraser River and many experienced the amenities at the Pacific Gateway Hotel at Vancouver Airport. The weekend event included a dinner on Saturday night at Pier 73 Restaurant, alongside live and silent auctions, raffle and 50/50 draws and live entertainment from Melanie Dekker and Vicky Sjohall. On Sunday, fishermen returned to a BBQ and an awards ceremony that included the largest cash prize of any fishing derby in Vancouver. The first-place award cheque of $15,000 was awarded to William Ng on the boat Rox-ley for his 19.84-pound salmon. Coming in hot on Ng’s heels was Bryton Harris on the 4 The Boys boat, hooking a 19.64pound fish that earned him the second-place prize of $7,000. Last, but by no means least, was Andrew Elsey on boat Team 38. Elsey gave the leaders a run for their money with a close third-place fish weighing in at 19.56 pounds and securing him the final prize of $3,000. “The derby is quickly becoming one of our favourite traditions

Delta and Korean Air expand joint codeshare agreement.
Delta Airlines and Korean Air will expand its codeshare partnership to provide customers with greater access to destinations throughout Asia and the Americas. Korean will place its code on Delta’s Atlanta to Seoul service along with flights to 115 U.S. and Canada destinations. The airline will also add its code to Delta’s Sao Paulo, Brazil flights from both Atlanta and New York City. Korean Air offers almost 100 weekly flights to 13 gateways in North America including Vancouver, Toronto, New York-JFK, Los
Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Honolulu, Washington-Dulles, Houston-Intercontinental, Chicago-O’Hare, Seattle and Las Vegas. In turn, Delta will expand its codeshare footprint to 32 Korean Air destinations beyond Seoul including new code to Taipei, Osaka, Singapore, Nagoya and Okinawa. Combined, Delta and Korean will offer round-trip connectivity to 142 destinations in the Americas and 33 destinations across Asia. Delta and Korean plan to launch the new codeshare in Q4 2016, subject to government approvals.
Canada’s new entry requirement
A new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), is now in effect for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to or transiting through Canada by air. Canada Border Security will show leniency to travellers who are unaware of the changes until September 29, 2016. Starting September 30, 2016, all air travellers, including Canadian citizens, will need to have appropriate documents to travel to Canada before they can board their flight. A valid Canadian passport is the only reliable and universally accepted travel document that provides proof of citizenship and the right to enter Canada without being subjected to immigration screening. Travellers should also make sure that the passport’s expiry date is well beyond the planned return date. Dual Canadian citizens If you are a Canadian citizen and a citizen of a visa-exempt country (dual Canadian citizen) who currently uses your non-Canadian passport to fly to Canada, you cannot apply for an eTA. This is because eTA was set up to screen foreigners for admissibility to enter Canada on a temporary basis. Exception for American-Canadians: American citizens, includ-
ing American-Canadian citizens, must carry proper identification and meet the basic requirements to enter Canada. You do not need a Canadian passport, a Canadian visa or an eTA to fly to Canada if you are travelling with a valid U.S. passport. Travel documents Travel documents that prove citizenship are: a valid Canadian passport; a Canadian temporary passport; or a Canadian emergency travel document. Temporary passports and emergency travel documents are only issued under strict conditions and on a case-by-case basis. If you don’t have a valid travel document that proves Canadian citizenship at check-in, you may not be able to board your flight. If this occurs, you will need to contact the nearest Government of Canada office abroad to get the appropriate travel document. Renew or apply for a Canadian passport as soon as possible before September 30, 2016. Find out how long it takes to get a passport and plan your travel accordingly. It also takes time if you need to get documents such as a proof of Canadian citizenship and or supporting identification documents. The 2011 Census reports that 2.9 per cent of Canadians hold dual citizenships, with the U.K., U.S., France and Poland being the most frequently reported.

The lifespan of an airliner is not truly measured in time. Instead, it is counted based on pressurization cycles. Each time an aircraft is pressurized during a flight its fuselage is subjected to stress. The “lifespan” of an aircraft is reached when there are certain metal fatigues and cracks, which may pose danger. The “service life of 20 years” is generally expressed by approximate figures of 51,000 flight hours and 75,000 pressurization cycles for most aircraft. If an aircraft is used on long haul routes it experiences relatively few pressurization cycles in its “life” and can remain airworthy far beyond 20 years.

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) is applauding the recent announcement by the Government of Canada and the People’s Republic of China to increase tourism between the two countries. TIAC has been a strong voice advocating for Canada to increase the number of Visa Application Centres (VACs) in the lucrative Chinese market. VACs are instrumental in expediting the visa process by ensuring that applications are complete and accurate. To date, VACs were limited to major cities in China, which made it more difficult for potential travellers in other cities to apply for visas. The announcement to open
an additional seven new centres in key growth markets is considered good news for continued growth in the Canadian tourism industry. “We have seen sustained growth out of China since 2010 and the country is set to become our second greatest source of international visitors to Canada,” said TIAC president and CEO Charlotte Bell. “[The] announcement to increase VACs and the designation of 2018 as the year of Canada-China Tourism will see this trend continue.” With a rapidly growing middle class and a hunger for travel, VACs in more areas of China will make it easier for potential Chinese travellers to make Canada their destination
of choice. Entering these new markets will mean more visitors, more spending and further growth in Chinese visitors. Chinese visitation to Canada is up 23 per cent in the first six months of 2016 and there has been an astounding 45 per cent jump in June 2016 numbers over 2015. This fall, TIAC will lead a trade mission to China that will include 12 Canadian tourism businesses. The overarching goal will be to better understand the Chinese market and seek opportunities to showcase Canada’s tourism product. Canada’s tourism industry is a $90-billion sector, with 1.6-million Canadian jobs dependent on economic activity generated by travel and tourism.

Lonely Planet’s ultimate money-saving travel guide
KLM Cargo personnel carefully load the skeletal bones of the Tyrannosaurus Rex prior to transport.
Last month, KLM Cargo transported its most unusual shipment to date—the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The priceless cargo was transported from the United States to the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in Leiden, Holland. The Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the best-known dinosaur species in the world, because it appeals to the imagination, having been one of the biggest predators on the face of the planet. This T.rex, nicknamed Trix, weighs around 6,000 kilograms and is approximately 13 metres
long. Trix roamed North America around 66 million years ago. Trix’s bones were carefully excavated in 2013 in Montana, under the auspices of the Dutch palaeontologist Dr Anne Schulp. Trix will be displayed at the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in Leiden. The skeleton landed at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol before being carried to Leiden by truck. “It is an honour for KLM Cargo to be allowed to transport this queen of the dinosaurs,” said Marcel de Nooijer, execu-
tive vice president KLM Cargo. “Our expert staff has brought Trix over with the utmost care. This specialism distinguishes KLM Cargo from other cargo carriers.” KLM Cargo is the airfreight division of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, transporting regular cargo as well as special and unusual shipments, ranging from exclusive paintings and sports cars to race horses and rhinos and now even a T.rex. In 2015, Air France KLM Cargo transported 1.2-million tonnes of freight.

Auto Repair and Maintenance By Bernie Pawlik
Maintaining a diesel engine for optimum performance The diesel engine (also known as a compression-ignition) is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel that has been injected into the combustion chamber is caused by high temperature, which gas achieves when greatly compressed. This contrasts with sparkignition engines, such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine), which use a spark plug to ignite an airfuel mixture. Diesel engines are considered to be highly reliable with minimal service required. However, several items in a diesel engine are critical and need service performed at regular intervals. Since diesel engines are expensive to repair, proper care and maintenance saves money, as well as maximizing power and performance. Engine oil & filter replacements vary from 5,000 to 25,000 kilometres, depending on the engine type and manufacturer’s recommendations. Fuel filter replacements are best done annually or at the manufacturer’s recommended interval. Diesel fuel systems are absolutely intolerant of water or other contaminants, so keeping filters clean is vital. Cooling system performance is absolutely essential to long engine life. Because diesel engines have very high combustion temperatures any overheating can immediately cause

expensive engine damage. Regular cooling system flushes along with monitoring the cooling system for leaks is vital. Monitoring the coolant level should be done at every scheduled maintenance service and if levels are found to be low, a pressure test and diagnosis should be conducted to find its cause. Maintaining proper coolant PH is critical to avoid scale formation inside a diesel engine since this can create localized hot spots and engine overheating. Coolant flushes should be performed every two to five years, depending on the type of coolant used and manufacturers’ recommendations. Glow plugs assist a diesel engine to start when cold and also cycle on and off during warm-up to reduce sooty exhaust. While there is generally no recommended replacement interval, they do wear out and if your engine is hard to start when cold, the glow plugs may require replacement. Air filter replacement is done on an as-needed basis,
although most manufacturers have a replacement interval. Depending on driving conditions, such as dusty roads, this interval can change. Visually inspecting the filter every year is recommended in order to determine its condition. Traditionally, diesel engines have been seen as noisy, smelly and underpowered, of little use other than in trucks, taxis and vans. However, as diesel engines and their injection system controls have become more refined, more manufacturers now offer diesel passenger cars in their vehicle line-up.
