The future is taking flight at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Vancouver Airport Authority wants the public to engage in the process of shaping what the airport will look like in 20 years.

YVR 2037 is a multi-year planning and consultation process that is an integral part of creating the new Master Plan—a road map that will help guide the airport authority to YVR’s future destination.

The Master Plan will be used to create a 20-year strategy (to 2037) that will ensure the best use of YVR’s fundamental resource—land.

Phase 2 of the YVR 2037 Master Plan consultation process, which is designed to receive as much feedback as

possible from the community, was launched recently.

Vancouver Airport Authority has also partnered with futurist Nikolas Badminton, who has created ‘design fiction’ stories that imagine what the terminal will

Air Canada to begin Nagoya and

Taipei non-stop service in 2017

Air Canada will operate 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on its new Taipei, Taiwan, route, which begins June 8, 2017.

Starting in the summer of 2017, Air Canada will serve two new international destinations from Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Air Canada will operate year-round service between Vancouver and Taipei, Taiwan and seasonal service between Vancouver and Nagoya, Japan, marking the only non-stop service to this Japanese destination from YVR. “We are delighted Air Canada is launching two new services from YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “We truly value Air Canada’s continued commitment to growing YVR as its premier trans-Pacific hub. Taipei and Nagoya are exciting

destinations and the new service will be welcomed wholeheartedly by British Columbians.”

Air Canada will launch thrice-weekly service between YVR and Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) in Nagoya on June 1, 2017. This will increase to four times weekly in August and September.

An Air Canada rouge 767-300 ER aircraft, featuring Premium rouge and Economy cabins will be used on the Nagoya route.

The year-round daily service between YVR and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) will begin June 8, 2017, subject to government approvals.

Air Canada will operate

787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the Taipei route, featuring 30 International Business Class lie-flat pod suites, 21 Premium Economy and 247 Economy Class seats with upgraded in-flight entertainment.

Both new services are timed to optimize connectivity at Air Canada’s YVR hub and onward to major destinations within Canada and North America.

“Air Canada is pleased to offer customers two new nonstop routes to Asia, representing a further expansion of our substantial international and North American network from our YVR hub,” said Benjamin Smith, president, passenger airlines at Air Canada.

Public transportation at YVR The Canada Line is Vancouver’s rapid transit rail connecting YVR to downtown Vancouver in less than 30 minutes and to downtown Richmond in 18 minutes. Trains can be accessed from both the International and Domestic terminals.

Canada Line’s YVR Airport station is centrally located between the International and Domestic terminals. After exiting the train, turn left for domestic flights or right for U.S. and international flights.

The Canada Line is acces-

sible by elevator from Arrivals and Departures levels. Green Coat volunteers are located throughout the terminals and are easily accessible for help finding the Canada Line.

Arriving from outside Canada?

Once through the customs and immigration arrivals process, walk toward the exit to the International Arrivals Greeting Area.

Exit the building, following signs marked Canada Line.

Before the parkade entrance, an escalator and elevator ascend to the

Canada Line platform.

All transit users travelling on the Canada Line leaving YVR are subject to a $5 Canada Line YVR AddFare, in addition to the regular zone fare.

AddFare is automatically added when a user purchases a fare card.

The Canada Line YVR AddFare is levied and collected by TransLink.

The Airport Authority receives no portion of the money collected from the Canada Line YVR AddFare.

Air Canada launched five new services in the first half of 2016, including international routes to Brisbane, Australia and Dublin, Ireland, as well as new transborder routes

to San Jose and San Diego, California, and Chicago, Illinois.

The airline is also set to celebrate the inaugural flight to Delhi on October 20, 2016, the only non-stop service to India from Vancouver.

New services such as this are made possible as a result of YVR’s new five-year rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program provides a highly competitive rate structure and includes rates lower than any other major airport in Canada and competing U.S. airports.

In celebration of Bike to Work week, YVR will host a celebration commuter station at Larry Berg Flight Path Park for cyclists on October 24, 2016.

This event will feature a service station for bikes, snacks and an appearance from the YVR flight crew, who will have fun games and prizes for attendees.

YVR is a supporter of Bike to Work Week and is committed to providing sustainable modes

of transportation and reducing its carbon footprint, the goal being to be a leader in sustainability.

YVR has participated in Bike to Work Week since 2009, partnering with HUB Cycling to encourage Sea Island commuters to choose biking as their preferred mode of transportation.

HUB is a charitable organization that addresses cycling issues in Metro Vancouver.

YVR supports sustainable ini-

tiatives and its Green Commuter Program incentivizes green modes of transportation, such as cycling, for airport employees.

dYVRsity month highlights inclusive travel experience

YVR awarded Carbon Accreditation at Airports Council International Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has been recognized for its efforts in becoming a sustainable airport after being awarded Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation by Airports Council International in Montreal.

“Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at YVR and this recognition from the Airports Council and Airport Carbon Accreditation is a tremendous reflection of our commitment to being world leaders in sustainability at YVR,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“We launched our Environmental Management Plan last year and this accreditation is proof that our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and be a sustainable airport are working and we are well on our way towards reaching our 2020 goals.”

YVR launched a new Environmental Management Plan in 2015 that outlined its commitment to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020. The Level 2 accreditation recognizes the efforts made in measuring its carbon footprint

and making significant steps towards reducing emissions each year.

“As an ambitious industry, airports like YVR are doing their part to be good partners by promoting sustainability and environmentally responsible practices,” said ACI-NA president and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “By achieving the ambitious goals of Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 2, Vancouver Airport Authority is setting our industry on a path toward continued success in innovation and sustainability.”

The Airport Carbon Accreditation was launched at the 2009 annual assembly of ACI EUROPE, allowing the assessment and recognition of participating airports’ efforts to manage and reduce its CO2 emissions.

Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent, voluntary program administered by WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, an international consultancy appointed

by ACI EUROPE to enforce the accreditation criteria for airports on an annual basis. The administration of the program is overseen by an independent Advisory

Air Canada resuming Vancouver-Dallas service

Starting February 5, 2017, Air Canada will resume its Vancouver – Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas operation, after more than 15 years of cancellation.

The Star Alliance member plans to operate this route on a daily basis, using Bombardier CRJ705 aircraft.

Air Canada’s published seasonal schedules from Vancouver have increased year-on-year since 2014, with capacity up 17.1 per cent this summer and forecasted to rise 8.8 per cent during 2016/2017 winter schedule.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent, YVR is also working to divert 50 per cent of waste from landfill and reduce potable water consumption by 30 per cent.

Airline Route Updates United expands India codeshare with Air Canada

This month, United Airlines will expand codeshare service to India with Air Canada, as the latter begins Vancouver – Delhi seasonal service.

Air Canada’s seasonal operation, which will depart from YVR from October 20, 2016 to April 6, 2017, will be carrying the UA code.

AC072/UA8095 departs YVR at 9:40pm, arriving Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) at 1:20am, 2 days later.

AC073/UA8153 departs DEL at 6:30am, arriving at YVR at 6:55am.

The Vancouver Airport Authority’s goal is to create the most inclusive travel experience possible—which is why celebrating Diversity Month in October is so important at YVR. Some huge strides have been made recently to make sure everything is being done to make sure everyone is comfortable flying in or out of Vancouver International Airport—no matter who you are.

Washroom signage has been changed terminal-wide to be more inclusive of transgender individuals. The Airport Authority encourages people to use the washroom of the gender with which they identify at YVR. For anyone wanting a bit more privacy, they can utilize private, single-stall washrooms that have had signage adjusted to reflect its usage.

Vancouver Airport Authority employees are now offered Queer Competency training to further support efforts towards building a safe and inclusive environment for employees and passengers alike.

These initiatives along with a strong presence at Vancouver Pride are reflective of the Vancouver Airport Authority’s stance of acceptance and equality for the LGBTQ community.

Culture Days festivities, in partnership with Lattimer Gallery, were recently held at YVR to showcase Haida art and performances from traditional dancers.

Located on traditional Musqueam territory, YVR is always looking for ways to showcase Aboriginal culture to reflect territorial roots. Scholarships are offered through the YVR Art Foundation to First Nations artists and recognize the importance

of Aboriginal culture through YVR’s employee-giving program, community pillars and the proud display of First Nations artwork throughout the terminal.

YVR reached new altitudes for accessibility in the past year, introducing resources to help families and individuals living with autism to help reduce stress and build confidence for future air travel.

YVR also partnered with Air Transat, CATSA and the Canucks Autism Network to host experiential airport tours in order that people could get used to the travel experience. This was in addition to the experiential tour that was held with Spinal Cord Injury BC to help travellers in wheelchairs become more comfortable at YVR. A pet relief area, the first of its kind in Canada, was also recently unveiled to better accommodate people travelling with service animals.

These are in addition to regular employee training to better assist people with disabilities and a new direction for the airport’s co-op program, which encourages applicants to self-identify and hiring takes place from a diverse group of students, including those living with disabilities.

If you have any suggestions on how YVR can be more accessible, you are encouraged to share them in order that they can be implemented in the future.

Beijing Capital Airlines’ new service to YVR will bring 123 jobs and add $6.2-million in GDP to British Columbia.

Starting Dec. 30, 2016, Beijing Capital Airlines (BCA) will begin service between Vancouver and Hangzhou, via Qingdao, China.

The new, thrice-weekly service marks the first time Beijing Capital Airlines will fly to any destination in North America.

“We are thrilled Beijing Capital Airlines has chosen YVR as its first entry point into North America,” said

The new route between

YVR and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) via Qingdao Liuting International Airport (TAO) will be flown on an Airbus 330, with seating for 222 passengers, including 36 in business class and 186 in economy.

This flight will depart HGH at 2:15pm, followed by a 6:05am departure from TAO, arriving at YVR at 1:15pm each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Cathay adds frequency and new aircraft to YVR-Hong Kong route

Departures from YVR will take place at 4:30pm, arriving at TAO at 7:40pm and then 11:25pm at HGH, both the following day.

China and Canada have a long history of cultural and economic links.

Hangzhou, located in the central eastern coast of China, is the capital city of Zhejiang province. Hangzhou is a city of more than nine-million people

and is among the seven most ancient cities in China. When the great Italian explorer Marco Polo visited in the 13th century, he declared Hangzhou the “most beautiful and elegant city in the world.”

Qingdao, located in northeast China, also has a population of more than nine million people.

Vancouver Airport Authority welcomed the recent Sichuan Airlines service change announcement for its flights out of YVR. Sichuan Airlines currently serves YVR three times weekly, operating between Chengdu and Vancouver, via Shenyang, China.

Beginning November 1, 2016, Sichuan Airlines will open up a new nonstop destination from YVR to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO).

The new service to Chengdu via Zhengzhou replaces the airline’s existing flight to Chengdu via Shenyang on Tuesdays and Fridays.

flights remain unchanged and will continue to be flown through Shenyang.

Employees across the airline’s network purchased the limited edition neckwear, with 100 per cent of the $45,000 dollars raised going to CBCF for breast cancer research, education, and support and information programs.

“Women represent more than half our workforce, making breast cancer a cause worth sup-

porting,” said Richard Bartrem, WestJet vice-president marketing communications. “The WestJet brand stands for caring and as the official airline partner of CBCF, we are tickled pink to adorn ourselves with the special neckwear this [month].”

WestJet has entered into a code-share agreement that allows Hainan Airlines to place its HU code on WestJet-operated flights.

The two carriers are building on an existing interline agreement that has been in place since 2013.

Hainan will be marketing HU code-shared flights to and from Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.

Hainan Airlines is the largest privately owned air-transport company in China and the country’s fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size. All code-share sales will be offered through Hainan Airlines’ global distribution network.

“The Chinese travel market is vast and growing; our newest code-share with Hainan Airlines will allow even more guests to

easily connect to the WestJet network,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet executive vice-president, commercial. “This code-share agreement provides choice, streamlined service and connectivity to guests here at home and abroad. Vancouver Airport Authority welcomed the recent Sichuan Airlines service change announcement for its flights out of YVR. Sichuan Airlines currently serves YVR three times weekly, operating between Chengdu and Vancouver, via Shenyang, China.

Beginning November 1, 2016, Sichuan Airlines will open up a new nonstop destination from YVR to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO).

The new service to Chengdu via Zhengzhou replaces the airline’s existing flight to Chengdu via Shenyang on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Global travel deals publisher Travelzoo has conducted a survey of more than 6,000 of its North American, European and Asian members to determine how consumers in different markets research and book holidays.

While travel apps have been adopted by a vast majority of Chinese respondents—with more than 85 per cent of Chinese Travelzoo members saying the use of travel apps is the easiest way to book a holiday and more than 70 per cent saying they plan to book flights, cruises, package holidays and hotels via apps— among European respondents there is resistance to book travel on mobile.

The Canadian Government has extended the leniency period for the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) requirement until November 9, 2016, in order that travellers and airlines will have more time to prepare for changes when flying to or transiting through Canada.

Starting November 10, 2016, Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, will need a valid Canadian passport to board their flight to Canada otherwise they will experience delays.

All visa-exempt travellers (except United States citizens) will need an eTA to board their flight.

In March 2016, Canada introduced the eTA requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada temporarily by air. The eTA requirement

was a key commitment under the Canada-U.S. Beyond the Border Action Plan to develop a common approach to pre-screening air travellers entering either country.

A six-month leniency period was put in place so that travellers who are unfamiliar with eTA could still board their flight to Canada. This leniency period, which was set to end on September 29, 2016, has now been extended until November 9, 2016.

“In consultation with airline partners, we’re taking further steps to minimize any travel disruptions,” said John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. “We are extending the leniency period and doing another major information blitz in Canada and abroad to encourage affected travellers,

including dual Canadian citizens, to plan ahead and get the necessary travel documents before they book a flight to Canada.”

Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, cannot apply for an eTA and will need a valid Canadian passport to board their flight, starting November 10, 2016.

Although eTA is a new requirement for travellers, applying for one is a simple online process that costs CAN$7. Most eTA applications are approved within minutes of applying.

It is recommended that travellers apply for an eTA before booking a flight to Canada.

As it can take time to get a Canadian passport, travellers should apply for one as soon as they can and plan travel accordingly.

Central Mountain Air discontinues non-stop Terrace-Vancouver flights Effective October 1, 2016, Central Mountain Air discontinued its nonstop service between Terrace (YXT) and Vancouver (YVR) using Hawkair aircraft.

The move was deemed necessary by the airline because of declining passenger counts on a very competitive route with ample capacity.

Central Mountain Airlines absorbed Hawkair’s planes and crews within its own schedule earlier this year.

WestJet takes Big Brothers Big Sisters under its wings Last month, youth from Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies from across Canada had the unique opportunity to connect and work side-by-side with WestJetters at 28 airports in the airline’s network, including Vancouver International Airport and the airline’s Calgary headquarters, to learn the ins and outs of the aviation industry.

From flight crew to aircraft mechanic, baggage handler to customer care agent, and accountant to marketer, BBBS youth were able to go behind the scenes and job shadow WestJetters.

Broadening their horizons, these youth had the opportunity to explore a variety of careers in aviation that they may not have previously considered. They also got an exclusive look into what it takes to run an airline.

September was Big Brothers Big Sisters month when BBBS celebrates the power and impact of mentoring. Throughout the

month, BBBS raised awareness about its programming and the important role mentoring plays in the lives of youth, as well as the lifelong impact BBBS mentoring programs have on youth as they grow into adults, community leaders and engaged citizens.

Viking completes acquisition of Amphibious Aircraft Program

The world-renowned CL-215 firefighter needs only 12 seconds to scoop its 6,137-litre load while skimming at high speed over water.

Viking Air Limited, headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia, has completed the acquisition of the Amphibious Aircraft program from Bombardier Aerospace, including transfer of the Type Certificates for the CL-215, CL-215T, CL-415 aircraft and all variants to Viking.

Viking has more than 40 years experience supporting a wide-range of utility aircraft and will extend this industry knowledge to supporting these aircraft.

Upon completion of the Type Certificate transfer, Viking will be designated as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for the amphibious aircraft fleet, including full manufacturing design rights for all variants.

The CL-415 is the aviation industry’s benchmark amphibious water-bombing aircraft and the backbone of aerial attack firefighting missions around the

globe. The aircraft is a key strategic asset for government and community firefighting efforts both nationally and internationally, and its multi-mission capability also allows it to perform in a variety of roles including maritime patrol and search and rescue.

Viking will also assume responsibility for in-service product support for the fleet of 170 water bombers currently in operation in 11 countries worldwide.

“The completion of this acquisition is a significant milestone, and now allows us to fully engage with the operator group to understand their requirements,” said David Curtis, president and chief executive officer of Viking and chairman of Longview Aviation Capital. “Aerial firefighting capability is becoming increasingly important and, with our leadership in supporting utility aircraft, we look forward to

working with operators to ensure these vital aircraft remain ready to perform to their full potential protecting communities and critical infrastructure.”

Originally launched in 1969, the CL-215 water bomber forms a key part of Canada’s rich aerospace heritage and led the way for further development of the design.

The CL-415 variant was introduced in 1994, and has since built a reputation as the best aerial firefighting aircraft in the world, earning the nickname “SuperScooper” due to its ability to scoop a 6,137-litre load in 12 seconds while skimming at high speed over the water.

Viking is also the Original Type Certificate holder for all out-of-production de Havilland aircraft—DHC-1 through to DHC-7—and provides exclusive spare parts manufacturing for the legacy de Havilland fleet.

Airline Crew Uniforms

Spotlight on China Airlines Taiwanese-carrier China Airlines introduced the current uniforms for its airline crew in 2015. The new look was developed by Hong Kong’s William Chang, whose work in Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster saw him nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 2015.

The uniform features colour blocks in sharp contrast colours, with three different colour combinations for both men and women in each crew role.

The standard female uniform is based on the 1950s-style cheongsam, a body-hugging onepiece Chinese dress.

For the colour palette, Chang selected a base of grey complimented by a generous use of red.

The uniforms of female cabin managers and chief pursers sport a different colour scheme, with the former dressed in black and white and the latter in blue and gold.

The male uniform design adheres to a more formal style.

One noticeable feature is a panel of colour along the bottom of the blazer. The standard male blazer is grey with a flash of sapphire blue at the bottom, while the cabin manager’s jacket is primarily dark blue with a gold shade at the bottom.

Footwear is divided into high heels for travel and flat soles for work. The design includes blue decorative lines and sapphire-coloured shoes that hint at the corporate colours of China Airlines.

Minister Garneau encourages cooperation to advance ambitious standards at 39th ICAO Assembly The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, addressed more than 1,500 delegates from Member States and representatives from international organizations at the 39th Session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly, which ran from September 27 to October 7, 2016.

At this triennial event, hosted at ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Minister Garneau stressed the importance of working closely with international partners to promote the safety, security and environmentally sustainable growth of global aviation. As ICAO’s host country since 1947, the Minister also reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to the agency.

ICAO is a United Nations (UN) specialized agency that works with its 191 Member States to set and audit safety, security, emissions, navigation and facilitation standards to shape and improve international air operations.

“The Government of Canada recognizes that through global cooperation and efforts to ensure the seamless transport of passengers

The A350 is the first Airbus aircraft with both fuselage and wing structures made primarily of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer.

China Airlines (CAL) has taken delivery of its first A350900, becoming the ninth airline to operate the world’s newest twin engine widebody airliner.

CAL’s A350-900 is configured with a premium three-class layout with a total of 306 seats, comprising 32 in Premium Business class, convertible to fully lie-flat beds, 31 in Premium Economy and 243 in the main cabin.

Altogether CAL has ordered 14 of these aircraft. After an initial period flying on regional services between Taipei and Hong-Kong, the aircraft will be deployed on long haul flights.

Richmond News Award-winning novelist to be Richmond’s next Writer-in-Residence

Acclaimed novelist, screenwriter and director, Karen X. Tulchinsky, is the City of Richmond’s fifth annual Writer-in-Residence.

Tulchinsky is an award-winning novelist, screenwriter and director. She is passionate about teaching new and emerging writers the creative process and the craft of writing. She was awarded the One Book, One Vancouver Prize for The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky, which was also named One of the Top Ten Books About Toronto by the Toronto Daily Star. Tulchinsky has also received honours for her short story, In Her Nature, her short film, Ms. Thing and her novel Love Ruins Everything.

During October and November 2016, Tulchinsky will set up shop in Richmond and provide expert advice to emerging and aspiring writers through one-on-one consultations and free hands-on public workshops.

Registration for the free writing programs opened on October 1. The writing programs include Memories into Stories, The Cure for Writer’s Block, The Art of Reading in Public, Writing a Short Monologue and Queer Stories: LGBTQ Creative Writing Workshop.

‘Wipe it, Green Bin it’ pilot campaign launched Grease—it’s the slippery mainstay of every kitchen and the bane of every sewer system. Metro Vancouver is teaming up with the City of Richmond to educate residents and businesses about how to properly dispose of their kitchen oils and grease.

The City of Richmond has some of the region’s most persistent issues with grease build up.

In the kitchen, cooking oil, shortening, butter, lard or meat drippings are meant to stop things from sticking together. But when grease goes down the drain, it binds with wipes and other detritus, quickly hardening into congealed, gluey fatbergs that ruin plumbing and sewers.

An easy way to wipe up grease, oils and fats is with a paper towel and then place it in a green bin. Nearly all homes and food service businesses in Metro Vancouver now have organics recycling programs that accept oil and grease. Large volumes of oil from deep fryers must be collected and taken to specialized recycling depots.

“Many people are unaware that putting grease down the drain can cause big problems, not only for their own plumbing systems but also for our municipal sewers,” said Darrell Mussatto, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Utilities Committee.

“Incorrect disposal clogs sewers, causes overflows into the environment and costs us two-million dollars annually in repairs.”

The “Wipe it, Green Bin it” grease education pilot campaign will run for eight weeks throughout the City of Richmond prior to a regional launch in 2017. The campaign also features face-to-face outreach at

local grocery stores, pot scraper giveaways and public tours of the Lulu Island Waste Water Treatment Plant. The campaign will also have a presence in ads on transit, local newspapers and online.

“We’re also working alongside the commercial sector in an effort to encourage restaurants to adopt better grease disposal practices,” said Mussatto. “Commercial kitchens are improving their grease collection, but there is always room for improvement.”

The City of Richmond will measure grease build-up in four areas of Richmond to monitor the results.

Commercial kitchens are regulated through a Grease Interceptor Bylaw. Metro Vancouver staff is available to provide assistance in understanding the bylaw and grease interceptor requirements as they relate to specific facilities.

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is designed to monitor inflation pressure that governs the performance of a pneumatic tire on various types of vehicles. Proper tire pressure, as specified by the vehicle manufacturer, ensures the vehicle’s safety and performance in such areas as braking distance and lateral stability.

Extreme under-inflation of tires can lead to thermal and mechanical overload and subsequent, or even sudden, destruction of the tire. Under-inflation also adversely affects fuel efficiency and tire wear.

A TPMS is provided as original equipment on a vehicle, or may be installed as an aftermarket solution.

Tires leak air naturally and during a year’s wear even a new, properly mounted tire can lose from 20 to 60 kPa (3 to 9 psi), roughly 10 per cent or more of its serviced proper pressure.

Punctures: Approximately 80 per cent of punctures are caused by inadequate tire pressure.

Increased fuel consumption: For every 10 per cent of under-inflation on each tire, a one per cent reduction in fuel economy will occur. The average person who drives more than 20,000 kilometres per year on under-inflated tires uses approximately 547 extra litres of fuel.

Shortened lifespan: Tire disintegration, heat build-up, separation and sidewall/casing breakdowns are mostly caused by under-inflated tires. Running a tire even briefly with low pressure breaks down the casing and stops the option to retread the tire.

Increased maintenance: Under-inflated tires cause expensive downtime, maintenance and

premature tire replacement.

Decreased safety: Underinflated tires lead to tread separation and tire failure, resulting in an estimated 250,000 accidents every year on Canadian roads. On the other hand, properly inflated tires provide greater stability, handling and braking efficiencies and more safety for the driver, the vehicle, the loads and others on the road.

Environmental impact: Under-inflated tires, as estimated by the U.S. Department of Transportation, release more than 57.5 billion pounds of unnecessary carbon-monoxide pollutants into the atmosphere each year in the United States, alone.

If your vehicle is equipped with a TPMS it is important to remember that you’ll need to equip both sets of seasonal tires and rims with TPMS hardware.

If your vehicle does not have a TPMS, consult your vehicle mechanic on having one properly installed.
